Cryptid Creeks is a tabletop roleplaying game using the popular Powered by the Apocalypse engine and is 'Carved from Brindlewood', a term for content based on Jason Cordova’s award-winning Brindlewood Bay. In this supernatural mystery, you'll play river scouts, a crew of young adults setting out to stop a rapidly spreading curse with the help of ancient cryptids of your own invention.
Creeks has many inspirations including Gravity Falls, Hilda, The Goonies, Lumberjanes and Night in the Woods, representing a genre we feel is surprisingly lacking in RPGs. Through this game, we hope to see themes such as friendship, discovery and community explored by gaming groups and summer campers of all ages and backgrounds.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Cryptid Creeks will feature 150+ pages filled with the beautiful full-colour art you have come to expect from Hatchlings Games. Content will include robust safety tools, character creation, intuitive dice mechanics, a guide to running the game as Navigator, a collection of sample curses, and an appendix of rolling tables and handouts.
The standard edition hardcover can be carried easily and will feature smyth-sewn bindings, a matte laminated cover for durability and recycled paper throughout. The special edition will feature an alternate cover with foil-stamping to make it shimmer, a ribbon bookmark in a spooky shade and an additional chapter with designer notes and concept art.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The game begins with the town you call home becoming cursed. This malediction has occurred many times throughout history, most recently in the Autumn of 1962. The nature of the curse is completely down to you, however it always springs from an object sold by the Peddler, an enigmatic demon with hidden motivations. The curse is of particular concern to the Watcher, a benevolent cryptid who has existed in harmony with the townsfolk for centuries. Your crew of scouts must stop the curse before it overwhelms the community and spreads to the neighbouring city.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Your scouts must investigate for Clues to the accursed object while trying to prevent the darkness from spreading! These dual tasks will form the basis of your roleplaying sessions (episodes). The game is best played over several episodes (series), but we have provided rules for one-shot play (pilots).
Tumblr media
Once the Watcher visits your clubhouse to inform you of the curse, you'll begin to discover Eeries around your hometown. These minor cryptids act as the eyes and ears of the Watcher and will observe your crew as they travel Clawfoot Creek attempting to find the object. The Eeries are a neutral - sometimes chaotic - presence in the game, but will intervene under special circumstances.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
As episodes play out, the curse will spread and grow in strength, its potency measured on a Curse Clock ticking slowly through four phases towards calamity. Your actions during episodes will earn you Clues, and when you believe you've collected enough, you can attempt to destroy the cursed object forever!
Tumblr media
Before episodes conclude, you'll be shown a list of milestones that, if met, will reward the crew with Cryptid Keys. These mythical items can be spent to upgrade your clubhouse and boat, factors essential to your progress in the game.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In Creeks, you'll create scouts using playbooks. These templates are provided to ensure character diversity and are ideal for those new to RPGs. Playbooks are named after boating roles, with Skipper, Shipwright, Lookout, Stowaway, Journaller, Negotiator, Medic and Conduit to choose from. The final game will include rules for you to create your own playbooks and select from a pool of special moves we've called Badges.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In most Powered by the Apocalypse RPGs, moves are used to determine your actions. In Creeks we have basic moves, which can be used at will, such as The Crew Move (used to clear misfortunes) and The Eerie Move (used to gain support from cryptids). Each playbook also has Badges, which can influence a wide range of mechanics.
Tumblr media
The game uses two six-sided dice (2d6) where every roll progresses your story regardless of the outcome. Only players roll dice during sessions, so it never feels like a competition with the Navigator. Instead, they'll be your biggest fan, willing you to succeed as they represent the characters you'll meet and the challenges you'll face.
If your rolls fail (6 or below), the Navigator has an opportunity to react. They might drop misfortunes on your scouts to slow your actions, split the party so you can't rely on one another, or even progress the Curse Clock!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
To stop the curse, you'll travel Clawfoot Creek visiting landmarks and inspiring locals to fight alongside you. To achieve this, you'll need a boat. Name your trusty vessel, then upgrade it to reach new locations on the map or welcome Eeries aboard, like the treasure-hunting Goldtooth. We're encouraging Navigators to incorporate creeks, coves and beaches into their adventures to ensure players use their boat often.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Having worked for a Deaf charity for twelve years and raising a disabled child, making Cryptid Creeks accessible to everyone is really important to us. To honour this commitment, we have hired Chris Hopper, one of the most experienced consultants in the industry with credits including Tal'Dorei Reborn from Critical Role and most recently Tales of the Valiant from Kobold Press.
The digital PDFs will accommodate screen-readers and feature alt text and chapter hyperlinks as well as plain text versions. Both hardcovers will have colour-coded page edges for intuitive navigation. Our website will also host form-fillable handouts for both players and Navigators.

Writing 3rd Party Content For TTRPGs
I've written, uh, a few tabletop rpgs from the ground up, building the entire system to fit the game's themes and subject matter, but that always feels like heavy lifting.
So when I want to relax but I still want to write something, I write 3rd party content.
Every game system treats 3rd party content a little differently, and some of the AAs have restrictions on whether you can sell the content you write, but the biggest publisher (D&D), a lot of the single As, and most of the indie is not just cool with but encourages it.
Some publishers put restrictions on what you can do with your 3rd party material. Paizo's Pathfinder 2nd ed license requires you to send a copy of your work to them. Mork Borg's license requires you to add a text block clarifying that your game isn't an official Mork Borg product and it also disallows racist or homophobic content. Mausritter requires you to add a text blurb and disallows translations.
These restrictions are more common in the single As. As you get into the indies, you're more likely to see a Creative Commons Attribution license (CC BY, which lets you go wild as long as you credit the original author), or just the phrase "Licensing - Go nuts."
The advantage of writing for someone else's system is that it gives my brain a break. I don't have to first create the universe. It's already created and I can fill out a little part of it.
Some of my favorite systems to write for have been Mork Borg (https://morkborg.com/), FIST (https://claymorerpgs.itch.io/fist), and No Nut November: Squirrels Of The Post Apocalypse (https://mitchelldaily.itch.io/nut). However, the best system to write for is whichever one *you're* most psyched about.
As an example of all this, I've added a link to Fisk Borg below. Fisk Borg is 62 pages of me stuffing fishing into the gloomy, pre-apocalyptic fantasy world of Mork Borg. I think it took me three days to draft, and a couple weeks to playtest and edit.
Of course, I am not an expert in 3rd party publishing, and there's lots of systems I'm not familiar with, but if anyone has any questions or is looking for resources, I'm happy to give advice to the best of my ability.

Will of the Dice- Strangers in a Stranger Land Audio RPG You find yourself in the world of Rune ath Kesha, a world of magic and mystery, a world where Gods and Monsters roam amongst mortals attempting to force their will on the writing of history. On its surface five continents are populated by diverse races and cultures, some just wanting to live peaceful lives, others seeking riches and adventure while the power hungry vie for domination and control. The year is 1374 the second counting, a mere five years since the devastation of Taladagarios, the apocalyptic event that removed a whole kingdom from existence and threw what few survivors to the mercy of the Fates. Some of those that lived have taken up lives in the major cities and cantons of Rune ath Kesha. Nestling into the bosom of populated masses attempting to forget when the Dark Citadel robbed them of kith and kin. During this time of devastation a voice in the wilderness came crying offering shelter to those who had no hope and no will. A young Loxadon named Sha’riiz, carrying the blessing of the Primordial and the weight of their mothers seat on Istrazilan ruling council offered land to the remaining of Taladagarios. Taurios Frostmane would swallow pride and accept this hospitality. The Council of Elders would relocate the natives of the northern settlement of Cliffhollow and give the land to the displaced allowing them to establish New Taladagarios. The minotaur kingdom fractured before the annihilation, returning to its solidarity as the challenges that lay before them made it clear that together was the only hope of keeping the noble people alive. With the solidarity came prosperity as New Taladagarios working with Istrazilan forged forward into the future. Things were bright and both lands walked hand in hand towards a bright and glorious tomorrow. Yet it is common knowledge that in Rune ath Kesha peace rarely lasts and so it would be in this scenario. On the third year, the day of new beginnings that would be renamed to the day of Primordial Ire the dread storms that once surrounded the western island returned. Shipping to and from New Taladagarios and Istrazilan became impossible as no ship could survive the hellish winds, driving rain and destructive lighting. Peace as it had so many times in Rune ath Kesha fell to the grip of superstition and accusation. The Kingdom of New Taladagarios the target of blame for the storms returning, the disgruntled elders using this as a means to unsheathe viperous tongues and condemn those who had welcomed these obvious accursed people into their land. Civil unrest rose, political intrigue birthed, times were bleak and growing ever more so by the hour. Worst of all was the collapse of infrastructure. Istrazilan not suited for the heavy agricultural burden that would be placed upon it began to die. This once proud place of community and brotherhood fell into a disheveled heap of chaos. Chaos that would lead to war. There are no true victors in war and this conflict would take a deeper toll on both Istrazilan and New Taladagarios. Forcing a treaty and reconciliation between the nations and forcing the brightest minds of both to attempt to find a way to save themselves as outside help would never come. This is when the initiative known as Stormchase was born. Each kingdom hiring work crews to begin excavating the ruins of the Primordial Temples, looking for the means to end the storms and save the land and its people. Work crews were assembled, treated like kings and dispatched to the four sites to find a way to save the land. Currently their labors have been fruitless but perhaps soon that will change. Perhaps soon the storms will end and hope can rise among the darkness. Until then all remain Strangers in a Stranger Land. https://audiofiction.co.uk/show.php?id=20231012-09 RSS: https://feeds.castos.com/mj0oz

OK so I live on this accursed Isle and this is the first time I am learning of these four swords that sound like something out a RPG or something.
Let me just fill the Americans or whatever to what this is like for me finding this out. Imagine you find out that part of the Inaugaration of a New President involves the Head of the Army, Air force, Condoleezza Rice and Kevin McCarthy carrying four swords called the Swords of Freedom, Liberty, Happiness and Power and they all need to be there or else the ceremony cannot take place and you have never heard of these fucking swords before and it all sounds really occulty.

I'm just here because I love explaining fnaf lore. I'll explain it in q really weird way, by explaining how it's changed game by game. So, fnaf 1 gives us the basic premise. Someone killed 5 kids and now we have haunted robots. Fnaf 2 expands and introduces the puppet. In a previous location someone murdered a kid who went on to pusses the puppet and then the puppet gave gifts to the kids who died after it. Also introduces a guy in purple who killed the kids. Also FNAF 2 is a sequel.
FNAF 3 is when it starts to get fun. Now you have the dead purple guy be killed by a bunch of ghosts while he's in a suit that he later on goes to posses. Purple guy always comes back, it's in the ganes trailer, he always comes back. The FNAF 3 location (a haunted horror house) burns down and frees the souls of the children tormented by this accursed franchise. But watch out, purple man survives and he's still around in his yellow bunny suit that has his actual rotting corpse inside.
Now we have FNAF 4, has been retconned. It originally said that the entirety of the first three games was AlL jUsT a DrEaM oooOoo. That's why the ones you play against this time are called nightmares and they're in a child's bedroom. But nah, throw this away because no one liked that and Scott, the coward, said now there's lore (and in come the Afton's).
I'll mention the books (the first 4, at least which are full length novels) now, which are best treated like fanfiction of the Lore. They hold hints but aren't the truth. They introduce two important characters Henry Emily and William Afton. William Afton is the killer, and Henry is the founder of Freddie's. Henry is an engineer and the father of Charlotte Emily the main character of the books.
The first book follows Charlotte and some friends breaking into the old Freddie's location when they run into the serial killer and killer anamatronics. Here William is alive but has the scars from what killed him in the games.
Now we move on from those characters to FNAF world, the FNAF rpg. Not a joke, we have an rpg and it's pretty fun actually. FNAF world just thematically reinforces a lot of things but doesn't provide much. It introduces the idea of going too deep and meeting some fisherman at the end of everything called old man consequences. Also you set up some stuff that happens in FNAF 3 but no one knows what it actually means. It's heavily tied to fnaf4 somehow but again, it's all vague.
Okay, now onwards to fnaf: sister location. SL starts with some asking one Mr. Afton why his clown robots are designed to kidnap and murder children. Because afton, who's now canon to the games made a bunch of clown anamatronics that kidnap children. His first victim? His daughter. Oops! He killed his own dau6hy accident. Now she's haunting the killer robot and has daddy issues. After beating the game the player character has his insider scooped out by every single robot in the facility and they wear him like a meat suit to crawl out if the facility. But the meat suit rots and they abandon it. Surprise! Now instead of having someone haunting an anamatronic now we have someone simply haunting his own corpse. The player character is out there just as a walking rotting neat suit. Double surprise, you're Afton's sons and also probably the player in every previous game except FNAF 4 since that's your little brother (who you accidentally got killed using an anamatronic).
So, to recao while I'm here. This is now the story of the Afton's, one of the two families that run Fazbear entertainment. The eldest son accidentally kills the youngest son, bullying turned fatal. The father goes mad, and makes children killing robots (and experimenting with ghosts, it's implied but still not stated) that accidentally kill his daughter. He butties the robots in an underground facility and starts murdering the children himself. He stuff the corpses into anamatronics. The ghosts come back and kill him using a faulty suit (the suit also doubles as an anamatronic, it changed from suit mode to anamatronic mode with him wearing it.). The protagonist goes down to the facility looking for his dead sister, who along with her robot friends kills him and wears him as a suit. Now we have three dead Afton's possessing one thing or another roaming about. (Four, the youngest is still around but he's just a ghost, no possession. The protagonist gets a job as a night guard at different Fazbear locations but gets fired for tampering with the anamatronics (probably trying to free the souls, which he does in FNAF 3) and for smelling like the dead body he is. Eventually, someone finds Willam Afton's corpse inside the suit, and just places him in a walk through horror attraction (dead body and all? Huh?). Father and son meet, and son burns down the horror attraction freeing the children's soul but not killing his father.
Okay, that was a lot so process that because now we need to introduce the Emilie's into this story, and they mostly show up in the books so this will be weird. In the books, Henry Emily has a son and a daughter that die young. I cannot remember how, it doesn't matter. He builds 4 robots of the daughter, baby, kid, teen adult. Or kid, preteen, teen, adult. He puts his heart, soul, agony, misery and grief into making these and they develop sentience. The way it's meant to work is that he would boot and turn them off carrying the daughter from one robot body to the next. The books follows body number three, the second to last in maturity. Around 18 years old I think. She doesn't know she's a robot. Body number 4 is stolen by afton and used for his own dead daughter. None of this matter yet, or will but it sets some ideas up.
In comes FNAF 6, pizzeria sim. (5 was Sis Loc) where you play as the same guy only this time you're opening your own pizzeria instead of merely working nights guard at others'. The franchise owner tells you to collect the robots that show up in the back alleyway. Amongst these are, your sister, your father, the amalgam of machines that wore you like a suit (minus your sister, she had beef with the amalgam and left it. Good for her!), the puppet (the puppet is inside another anamatronic). At the end of the week, the franchise owner sets the whole place on fire and you all die happily together. It's implied you were in on this, or at least stated that you want it this way. We also learn a lot of lore. That franchise owner? Henry Emily. His daughter? The puppet. So the puppet is one Charlotte Emily, nice. We don't know wether Henry died in the fire. And so ends the sane part of FNAF and we enter
AR VR generation. This zone is a lot and a bunch of books release confirming or denying thing so here's the run down. Pain itself can haunt things beret of soul. Maybe any strong emotion can! So pain filled boards are scanned from the wreckage of the FNAF locations in order to use in a VR game except woops, the game is now haunted and possessed some chick named Vanessa who looks exactly like Afton's daughter. Yippee. She gets a job as the head security guard at a Freddie's themed mega mall called the pizzaplex. And here is where we reach the modern mysteries. I'll send them later since this is getting long but that's basically the lore for the first 6 games and some of the books. It's downhill from here. (If I don't send the new lore in a day bother me for it)
holy shit i already knew the lore was big, but i but this is BIG big
amd tysmm <3 i'll dm u for ur prize!!!! :3

Miscellaneous musing that won't become a textpost: the legacy of status ailments in JRPGs is probably going to be ultimately carried by a few edge cases where something that's designed around being difficult to rely on becomes reliable. This came to mind after seeing somebody describe the Pokemon status effects as being extremely strong by RPG standards, which I initially felt was a strange assessment - the majority of the status effects of Pokemon are actually quite weak, only sleep and freeze seem particularly notable, and both of these are largely held back by inaccessibility - freezing is mostly relegated to 10% chance status riders in a game where battles are rarely 10 turns long and sleep is mostly dependent on random chance. Spore is generally the only reliable method, which seems to be a typical case of a method balanced around being inaccessible becoming reliable. I'm reminded of how SMTV is sometimes described as being a SMT game that makes status ailments into a usable strategy, but I wonder if it's really a game where status ailments are a viable strategy or if it's just Accursed Poison giving you a completely reliable method of inflicting seal, which is seemingly balanced around being fickle at best.

3. favorite artist i started listening to this year— corook! “your mom” and “the dog” both made me cry when i first heard them, way to write about incredibly specific relationship experiences ive never heard music about before. honorable mention to will wood, whose work i was already familiar with but i got really properly into self-ish as an album this year. honestly though i didn’t listen to a ton of music this year? like less than half of what i listened to last year, easy.
14. favorite book i read this year— princess floralinda and the forty-flight tower. you already know i goddamn adore tasmuir’s writing, and cobweb is an absolutely stellar character i can’t believe there is no art of her on this webbed site.
19. so, so much tbh, but the first thing to come to mind is that i’m in a regularly meeting, ongoing rpg campaign for the first time since high school and i’m SO excited about it. all in all, 2023 was a year in which i made more friends than i’ve ever had in my life, and i really look forward to whatever opportunities i’ll have to get closer with them all next year— the campaign is just one example! also for january to be over i have an accursed track record with that month and i’m *really* hoping to break the streak next year so it had best hurry tf along.

For the last few months, I’ve been struggling with the question of whether I have an RPG setting in me the same way most of my peers do: a whole world in my brain that’s more than an homage or riff.
