- Homer, The Illiad
So now I meet my doom. Well let me die— but not without struggle, not without glory, no, in some great clash of arms that even men to come will hear of down the years!
**Words spoken by Hector to Achilles. Translation by Robert Fagles. Illustration for The Wooden Horse - The Legend of the Fall by Eberhard and Elfriede Binder.

Achilles [at a picture of a red hot knife cutting bread]: Imagine stabbing someone with this knife
Odysseus: It would immediately cauterize the wound, so the person wouldn’t bleed, so it’s not very useful.
Agamemnon: If you want information it is.
Diomedes: and there we see, in order, a Gryffindor, a Ravenclaw, and a Slytherin
Patroclus: Why would you stab a PERSON when you could have TOAST?
Diomedes: There’s the Hufflepuff.

There was silence then, and I did not care about the damp pallet or how sweaty I was. His eyes were unwavering, green flecked with gold. A surety rose in me, lodged in my throat. I will never leave him. It will be this, always, for as long as he will let me.

NO MORE SHIT ABOUT ACHILLES' LOSS WHEN HEKTOR KILLED PATROCLUS! Talk to me about the loss of Troilus when Achilles murdered him as he fled unarmed in desperate hope for safety! Talk to me about the loss of Polydorus, a child longing for the chance to play outside the walls when he slipped out to the battlefield where Achilles then spilled his guts for him to see before he died! The loss of innocents when the war over spilled its bounds is all its wretchedness! There is nothing special about Achilles' loss! It is significant, and it is tragic, and it is also the same suffering shared by countless others before and after him because of the slaughter of the war.
Homer was right! It IS about Achilles' rage, it is never the story of Achilles' loss! The only thing that makes his loss seem greater than any other is that he had the strength to make the consequences dire. Patroclus's loss is grievous, but is also one piece interwoven in the whole, expansive tragedy of the war, no more or less meaningful than any other piece, and cannot be separated out.

His eyes opened. "Name one hero who was happy." I considered. Heracles went mad and killed his family; Theseus lost his bride and father; Jason's children and new wife were murdered by his old; Bellerophon killed the Chimera but was crippled by the fall from Pegasus' back. "You can't." He was sitting up now, leaning forward. "I can't." "I know. They never let you be famous and happy." He lifted an eyebrow. "I'll tell you a secret." "Tell me." I loved it when he was like this. "I'm going to be the first." He took my palm and held it to his. "Swear it." "Why me?" "Because you're the reason. Swear it." "I swear it," I said, lost in the high color of his cheeks, the flames in his eyes. "I swear it," he echoed. We sat like that a moment, hands touching. He grinned. "I feel like I could eat the world raw."
