Lets Talk About Battletech
Felt like gushing about the one sci-fi series that I have always nerded out over, so lets talk about big stompy robot and one of the last bastions of the real-robot mecha sub-genre in this cyberpunk world we now live in.
My introduction to Battletech was the Animated series that aired for one season in 1994. It was far from the best cartoon, mostly serving as a meme generator for the current fandom. Exo-Squad was on their second season by that time and had superior animation and story telling but there was something about Battletech that kept me and my friends talking about it. That something was the Battletech universes itself. As flawed as the cartoon was, it did a great job summing up the Inner Sphere in it’s 60 second intro. The show leaves out a lot but if it’s mission was a simple introduction, sampler to the much broader Battletech Universe, mission accomplished.
After the cartoon ended, my buddies found the Battletech novel series at the local book store, that lead us to find the Battletech 3rd edition table top game and in 1995, Activsion published MechWarrior 2: 31st Century Combat. After that, I was unapologetic Battletech nerd.
What was it that made me fall in love with the game? Allot of little things. The ‘Mechs that took center stage in Battletech had wight, they looked and felt like combat machines. Each Battlemech looks purpose built for war, walking weapon platforms that would crush foes under foot given the chance. The stories themselves are not award winning but most are relatable. Each conflict has petty beginning and costly consequences. Few things are black and white, war itself was the enemy but was also celebrated. Each character had their own self serving motivations rather than some altruistic idea, be it seeking honor and glory or avenging their home planet lost to conflict. It wasn’t ultra-bleak like 40K but it was acknowledging there is little black and white in war, just allot of gray. You are piloting a towering killing machine and winning sometimes means just getting back alive after you run out of ammo, your armor has been shredded and the other mechs are hunting you down.
As with any community built around a war game, you do run into occasional jerks you need to block but I found most of my interaction with fellow Battletech fans to be good ones. Some of my most cherish from my childhood was playing the table top with my school yard friends or talking about that stupid cartoon. Made new friends simple sharing Battletech fan art and still enjoy talking about Battlemechs with my current social group when I can.
Coming full circle; If that stupid, stupid cartoon can teach us anything, don’t be petty. It’s far easier to make enemies than allies and in this world of gray, do the right thing when you can… that and Nicolai Malthus was an ass... sorry Jade Falcon fans but you know why he’s the meme.

Activsion: May we present the inglorious Cockney murderbastard of death and his skull for a face designed for maximum terror?

Activsions fuck up with the MW3 campaign is really just an indictment of their entire business model, you can absolutely tell all the effort is going into their monetisation and the multiplayer because the entire campaign is just warzone with a half assed story slapped on.

I really hope that Microsoft get Activsion not because i want them to succeed but but because this might make Sony stop making so many exclusives.

People already claiming the new island looks "too cartoony". They are in FRAKKING WONDERLAND!! What were they expecting? Activsion levels of realism?
Wow, RWDE is deliberately killing their sense of joy and wonder so they can complain about a cartoon being cartoon-y. Truly they are the pinnacle of wisdom and discernment.

I don't know how much into gaming you are but what are your thoughts on Microsoft buying out Activsion Blizzard? I think its both horrible and hilarious, horrible because its wrong that these major companies are allowed to create monopolies by buying out major game studios like these and hilarious because in spite of these purchases, Microsoft is still falling behind Sony and Nintendo. Its like they think that buying studios is the key to success not making good games.
Didn't Blizzard had some awful allegations a while ago? Maybe that is why they're doing it, new boss, new start...or something like that.

What Could Microsoft's Acquisition Of Activision-Blizzard Look Like?
Pexels - CC0 License
Much has been said about Microsoft’s recent spree of video game publisher acquisitions. In 2020 it acquired Zenimax Media which owned Arkane Studios, Bethesda Softworks, id Software, MachineGames, and more. Previous to this they had been picking up different video game development companies, like Obsidian Entertainment in 2018.
Now, in 2023, they have been provisionally approved by the UK’s CMA financial regulator to acquire Activision-Blizzard, a household name in the gaming space for developing franchises like Diablo, World of Warcraft, Starcraft, and on the Activision side, most notably Call of Duty.
Now that the deal looks likely to go through having already been accepted by the USA and EU, gamers are asking one essential question - what could Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision-Blizzard look like for them? Microsoft’s Xbox division has made very interesting moves as of late, such as by rolling out Game Pass, a relatively popular subscription service providing rotating access to a list of video games on both console and PC.
Let’s theorize a few examples of the changes gamers could see as this deal is concluded and Microsoft’s strategy unveils itself:
Game Pass & Exclusivity
Part of the reason that the UK regulatory authority was reticent to accept MIcrosoft’s acquisition plans was because the ability to limit and wall off popular franchises into a closed console ecosystem was more likely than ever. We can no doubt expect some of that, with carefully curated exclusivity deals that may give limited access to franchise like Call of Duty on different consoles. As anyone who keeps up with the live service economy and gaming currencies knows this can shape the development of franchises, potentially causing them to play very differently as time passes on.
Streamlining Of Essential Franchises
Microsoft now has a great number of franchises to manage, and not all of them have been performing as hoped. For example, the Halo series has since become much less popular and exciting to fans thanks to the mismanagement of Infinite, a title beset by many delays and controversial design decisions. We can also expect Microsoft to take a closer look at the underperforming player counts of newly acquired IP’s like Overwatch. In order to properly decide on the future of each franchise, we can expect some to be cut, old fan favorites to be rejuvenated, and the best of current design teams to work on brand-new initiatives.
The Merging Of Several Studios
As Microsoft diligently considers which franchises to renew and which to leave in the past, we can expect certain studios to merge together. This might involve bringing the best staff of individual teams together, such as Obsidian with Bethesda. Some outperforming studios have had trouble in recent years with their direction, as per Arkane and its disastrous Redfall release. As Blizzard becomes the hot new property within Microsoft’s purview, we can expect it to be supported and even merged with other outfits. Thankfully, Microsoft seems to be interested in giving each studio a fair attempt at releases before making drastic decisions, so not all merges are guaranteed for now.
The jury is out on how Microsoft’s acquisition of Activsion-Blizzard will progress, but one thing is for sure, any approach is sure to cause seismic changes in the gaming space.
