Response to Celebrity Inc.
I took a particular interest in Chapter 2 of Celebrity Inc. as I am, somewhat shamefully, a large fan of many reality television shows and stars. I think it is a really interesting topic how they discuss that reality stars went from being the “bastard cousins of big Hollywood business, the lowest rung on the fame ladder” to suddenly having agents fight to get them as clients and large brands willing to partner with them. The reason I found this interesting is because despite the popularity and financial success of reality stars and their shows they still do not have much (or any) respect from the rest of Hollywood. Even in my first sentence when I stated I am a huge fan of these shows and people I still admitted that with shame. Hollywoods willingness to work with these shows and stars has undoubtedly increased but the respect has not. Especially as we see the “trashier” reality shows take prominence, such as MTV’s shift from The Hills to Jersey Shore. It feels as if the public/audience has forced Hollywood into working with them because they can not deny the amount of attention these people get, and this attention can be easily converted into revenue. This communicates to me that in Hollywood, or perhaps now the world of social media in general, any type of attention can be beneficial. People don’t have to love you, they can even hate you, you just need them to watch and comment.
Overall, another takeaway I had from Celebrity Inc. was that there is always something new and shinier on the way. I think this is a lesson that applies to many industries, and I always knew it applied to Hollywood in many ways. But, this reading reinforced the importance of constantly working to evolve your brand otherwise the next person is destined to quickly come in with a bigger and better version of your idea. Whether it's Mike “The Situation” far surpassing Spencer Pratt in income per episode or Ad.ly improving upon the model of Ashton Kutcher’s company Katalyst, someone is always right behind you with a new flashier idea. Therefore, if you stop trying to progress and stay relevant, you will almost undoubtedly fall off.

Ah, the power of digital marketing. Of course, I hope there's some counsel to the celebrity tweeters to put a little pizazz in their message and not just an obvious plug.

Co-founder Derek Rey said while traditional celebrity endorsements can cost upwards of $1 million, Ad.ly can connect a business with a celebrity for under $3,000. There’s been a great deal of interest in our first endorsement campaign with Charlie Sheen, so we wanted to let you know how it is performing.
The 1st endorsement tweet – sent on behalf of Internships.com – went out at 1:03 p.m. March 7, 2011.
As Internships.com announced today via the 2nd endorsement tweet, the results are as follows. The initial tweet generated:
– 95,333 clicks in the 1st hour
– 412,000 clicks in 48 hours (see the Bit.ly data by cutting and pasting into a browser: http://bit.ly/hykQQF+ )
– A worldwide trending topic #TigerBloodIntern
– Internships.com received 74,040 applications
– Applications came in from 181 countries
On Monday morning, Internships.com was a start-up with a good product.  By Tuesday morning, it was a brand with a promising future.
Success on this scale is rare to achieve outside of a multi-million dollar Super Bowl ad. But with 1,000 celebrities available to endorse brands in social media, Super Bowl moments have become much more accessible and measureable.
And frankly, after 24,000 endorsements over the past 12 months, these results are not surprising. Celebrities are the driving force in social media.  Celebrities are the new prime time.
