This is the confidence Lyon missed while Ada was out for nearly two seasons with a series of injuries. These are the words of a player who has yet to lose in the UWCL while playing. “We shouldn’t be down 2-1, but we are going into this match with a positive attitude, knowing we can score two goals and win.” They are currently down 2-1 after going ahead in the first leg and will be without star defender Ellie Carpenter who was sent off with a red card in the first round. In the meantime, Ada is prepared for Lyon’s second leg of their UWCL matchup against Juventus. “My teammates that have played for OL Reign have spoken very highly of the team and the city and I would like to visit one day.” Hegerberg does follow the team when she can and is rooting for them to finish this year’s campaign with a better result than a semi-final loss. I inquired about Ada’s feelings on the city of Seattle, which is home to Lyon’s sister club, and Ada chuckled before telling me she’s never been. We end the interview with me asking a personal question as an OL Reign fan. “I believe in the importance of showing footballers and other women athletes in all lights as we grow the game,” she says, “it’s why I’m excited to work with DAZN.” The short ends with the tagline “see it, be it” which was a point of emphasis for Hegerberg. She discusses athletes like Norwegian boxer Cecilia Brækhus and the Williams sisters, who she credits with modeling the behavior of what it means to have familial support as a woman in sports. Hegerberg herself has a new short coming out titled “Icons with Ada Hegerberg” where she discusses the women she admired in her youth and why they mattered to her. Those pieces allow us to connect with them through more than just their play on the pitch and our need to watch their sublime talent. One of the perks of the partnership with the UWCL, DAZN, and players like Hegerberg, who’s already an ambassador of the game, are the pieces on players in this tournament. The numbers bear that out, with over 14 million views in over 210 markets for the group stages alone through the DAZN YouTube channel. “It is important for the players that DAZN is able to get more eyeballs on the screen, to know that people are watching makes the players feel good,” Hegerberg tells me in response to the importance of DAZN showing all UWCL matches from the group stages onward. My time with Ada will be brief, but I want to speak to her about her partnership with DAZN and why it is so important to her. This is, of course, the persona Hegerberg carries with her onto the pitch as one of the unquestioned leaders of a Lyon team that is not unused to making it this far in the UEFA Women’s Champions League. She appears in a brown shirt, the picture of calm in her sun soaked room despite having done what I imagine are several interviews back-to-back.

Also, I remember seeing a while back that you keep a running list of great words to use in the future (ouroboros is also a fave) and had to let you know that in a personal list of ‘evocative words’ I keep, Lionheart has got to be responsible for like 80% of the current entries (Pelagic depths, noblesse oblige, vox populi, carnally, plebian, filial piety, and birthright come to mind)

I love that list of words with my whole heart. It's great. "pelagic" and "plebeian" are my favorites. Most recent addition was "truculent," and I'm still trying to work in a place for "musth."

Break glass in case of emergency reading: Hmm. A number of fandom classics, actually, mostly because they are, in fact, fandom classics. I've held off on reading Green Light and Measure of a Man because of the acclaim and a reasonable confidence that I'll like them quite a bit. This Oxford AU/postwar story is currently one I'm eyeing to read next, because it's so right up my alley, but I'm not reading longfic so aggressively because I'm also giving myself time to focus on writing at the moment. I'm also behind on the last few chapters of Let The Dark In. In general, though, I'm greedy and also bad at choosing not to read things when I'm interested in them. As for real books: Ada or Ardor, by Vladimir Nabokov; Gabriel Garcia Marquez's new novel; Romain Gray, The Kites; and Maurice.

QUESTIONS FOR MUNS

another good question . . . in terms of themes, no matter what in all my muses and writing — I want everyone to see them as people ; to be able to imagine my muse going about everyday life based off my writing. I value humanity in a way I cannot describe with words / although I so badly wish to . . . so I very much hope my mutuals can construct someone like Vox in their head and think of him as a real person.

motifs . . . one of the major motifs all my blogs have is trauma ; not by my own choice, but because it comes with the character. now, depending on the blog, the trauma manifests in different types. ada wong and the plague / adiris are two of my muses who cope with the aftermath of childhood trauma / gender trauma because of their upbringing as women. s.onic deals with chronic and complex trauma due to expectations pushed upon him as a child. v.ox deals with trauma that stems from so many causes I can’t even list them all. I guess the point is . . . I hope everyone can see the cause and effect my motifs have.

And it has infected me with this horrible lurking suspicion that I am wrong about what my own preferences are as a person.

Some number of years ago, after I’d stepped down as editor of Vox, which I used to run, my partner and I, we left D.C. where we lived at the time and we went and we spent almost three months in a little cottage, basically, near the beach on California’s Central Coast. And the very explicit idea of that was to let life be small for a while, to just shrink everything down. And I thought I would go a little crazy with boredom in a really healthy revitalizing way. And the genuine shock of that period of my life was that I’ve almost never felt bigger as a person. I did nothing. I mean, I worked. But I didn’t see people really. I didn’t go that many places. And it has infected me with this horrible lurking suspicion that I am wrong about what my own preferences are as a person. My sense of being an urban person is incorrect. Now, look, I had fewer responsibilities at that moment. And I didn’t have kids. And there are all kinds of changes in my life. But that sense that we’re socialized — or many of us — to think that fullness comes from a kind of hubbub and to maybe miss what gets drowned out by that, maybe the wholeness you’re talking about, has really, really lingered with me. And a lot of your poems really reawaken that ongoing worry I have about the decisions I’ve made in my own life — and continue to make.

once upon a..dream

the way Ada Leonard A.k.a Leona de Rolo met her lover, a ranger who had gotten trapped in the fey wild. His name is Kuruk, and the two met in their dreams before meeting each other in person.

He's a human beastmaster/ranger...who had gone into the forest to search for a unique animal companion and fell through a door to the fairy court. It was wild. Everything was intense in this plane. His emotions, his gift to hear the sounds of the wild and creatures around him. He lovee the feeling he got from this realm, forgetting even his troubled life behind him. Kuruk wandered this realm, wanting to take in the wildlife and inhabitants. One night when he fell asleep he dreamt of a woman with short, and wild curly hair. Crystal blue eyes and glasses. She looked surprised to see him, and tried walking towards him but the dream ended. His heart yearned...

He found himself entering Shinaelestra, the ranger city and it was the best thing that happened to him. Because there, he dreamt of her again only this time he could hear her voice, and see her slightly pointed ears. This became a routine for them both, and everytime he dreamed the two of them would talk. They chatted for what seemed like hours, and now he wanted to see her in person. While there Kuruk had befriended a few fey and citizens of the city. These people became his new family...he learned much, and now he doubted he would ever leave.

As time passed a new inhabitant came. A woman, with a gun strapped to her hip and gun powder smudged across her nose and glasses covering blue eyes. Their gazes met and the dreams from before all came back. His heart skipped a beat. But he couldn't be sure...was this his lioness?

Kuruk spent his time prowling the howling forest, and doing missions for the fey court of the week. Ada tagged along, wanting to find a crossroads back to the Plane. They spoke for long hours, and bickered about little things. He noticed little things, like when she was nervous she would rub her nose, or tug her short curls.

Ada, on her end saw his passion for animals, and his wild and care free personality. She had never liked the bow when her mother taught her, she could never grasp it, but when he taught her...well he was a good teacher. She found herself falling for him, and remembering kisses from their dreams of each other. With emotions heightened in this realm it was fairly easy for them both to...enter a passionate embrace after one particularly successful mission. And many more after that time.

They were also kinda stupid and forgot to use protection in the moment, and so Ada found herself pregnant. She was both ecstatic and also terrified. How could she do her personal quest now? Could she leave to find her brother? Her twin? Also she should probably tell her babies father her real name...

During the months she revealed everything about herself to him. Telling her her real name, Leona Pike de Rolo and she originally came to this realm on accident. She'd been looking for any fey or Archfey here who could give her information on her twin brother Wolfe, and she had to find him. To apologize to him and bring him home. Kuruk had no idea how to process all that, but the name de Rolo sounded awfully familiar. He remembered a famous family in Sunstone but he had never seen them before, and fell into the wild before he could ever make it to that city.

Seeing how this was important to her, and he loved her enough to agree to help her go and find her brother. She didn't ask to make him come along, but Leona wanted him to so much...

After she had the baby, a little boy they named Sim'cha, the two acted like a family and honestly it was nice. Though when Simmy was old enough, a year old, the trio set off looking for the crossroads to the Plane. They traveled to the Sablecast grounds, finding a portal to the Material Plane. As Leona was about to leave, she hesitated, holding her son close a moment...Kuruk decided that she was worth leaving this realm and the family stepped through the portal.

Unfortunately time had passed in the Material Plane...much for then she expected. She entered the feywild at age nineteen, and was physically twenty now...but apparently four years had passed in the Material Plane. And on top of that the portal separated Kuruk, Sim and Leona from each other. And she found that her memories of the other plane was hazy. Barely able to remember Kuruk, and her babies faces. All she could remember was his voice...and her babies laugh.

Kuruk had held on to their son, and they got transported to the place he had entered the Feywild. He still remembers his lover, and his helps him do that. But he noticed that his own body had...aged...now he was in his late forties. How long had he been there?
