Milestone Monday

On this date, October 24 in 1260, Chartres Cathedral, which had begun reconstruction after a fire in 1194, was consecrated in the presence of King Louis IX of France. Designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1979, this much-visited cathedral is well-preserved and restored, with the majority of the original stained glass windows still intact, and with only minor changes in the architecture since the early 13th century. Its west entrance is dominated by two spires, one built in 1160 that survived the fire, the other that includes an early 16th-century Flamboyant Gothic addition. Its three great façades are adorned with hundreds of sculpted figures illustrating key theological themes and narratives.

To commemorate its consecration 762 years ago, we are showing photographs of Chartres Cathedral by American artist Samuel Chamberlain (1895-1975), reproduced as photogravures for the 1957 Limited Editions Club production of Henry Adams’s tourist-journal style narrative Mont Saint-Michel and Chartres, printed at the Press of A. Colish in an edition of 1500 copies signed by the artist.

Monday

Maribel wanted to reject Litzy, she really wanted to. She never asked to have another sibling. As if it wasn't enough to suddenly have to share the room with another girl her age. But Litzy was just so cute! She couldn't help but like that little bundle...

Josue was so annoyed that he was - together with Mr. King, but you couldn't really count him - the only boy in the house. But the house itself was pretty cool, with the pool and everything!

Raneka couldn't wait to get out of the house. So to spend less time out of it, she got herself an after-school-job.

David loved his little Litzy. He could have like three more of her running around the house. But Gabriela said no more kids. Even Litzy had been unplanned. But David was so grateful to have her. It was like having little Raneka all over again...

Around Midday Mr. Splitter and Mrs. DeShong came to visit. David didn't know why they came over, but he was always happy to have a full house. He only felt a little attacked when Maribel and Josue started talking about the newest additions of the family and lets say, they didn't choose the nicest words for his part of the patch work family.

Genesis: Mari, I know you're not feeling so great about this situation, but please, give David and Raneka a chance. They're not that bad. Maribel: I know Tia. It's just... Papa had only been dead for such a short time when Mama came home with this guy... And the pregnancy and moving and Raneka - urg - she's just driving me nuts! Genesis: What's wrong with her? Maribel: She... she knows a secret about me... and I'm afraid she'll tell Mama. Genesis: What can be so bad, Amor? Why don't you tell it your Mama yourself? Maribel: That's not so easy Tia! I - I'm really afraid... Can - can I tell you? You won't tell anybody, will you? Genesis: Of course I won't! Maribel: Tia - I - I'm in love with a girl.

Genesis had almost started laughing at her nieces confession. She knew that Maribel's father had been really traditional and would have rejected a relationship like that, but Gabriela was a doctor, she knew that nobody could choose who to love and she wouldn't react badly on hearing about Maribel's first crush (what more could it be at that age?). Genesis herself tried to get some adventure in her life too, but Dr. Splitter didn't seem interested... Too bad, being with a Mad Scientist would no doubt be exciting.

Top Favorite Car Racing Movies

Due to the upcoming release of "GRAN TURISMO", I had decided to list my current favorite movies about car racing:

TOP FAVORITE CAR RACING MOVIES

"Speed Racer" (2008) - The Wachowskis wrote and directed this exciting and very original adaptation of Tatsuo Yoshida's late 1960s Manga animated series about a young American race car driver. Emile Hirsch, Christina Ricci and Matthew Fox starred.

2. "The Love Bug" (1968) - Robert Stevenson directed this funny and first-rate adaptation of "Car, Boy, Girl", Gordon Buford's novel about a sentient Volkswagen Beetle named Herbie and his relationship with his driver, Jim Douglas. Dean Jones, Michele Lee, Buddy Hackett and David Tomlinson starred.

3. "Those Daring Young Men in Their Jaunty Jalopies aka Monte Carlo or Bust" (1969) - Ken Annakin directed and co-wrote this all-star comedy about the European car rally , the Monte Carlo Rally. Tony Curtis, Susan Hampshire and Terry-Thomas starred.

4. "Rush" (2013) - Chris Hemsworth and Daniel Brühl starred in this biopic about the rivalry between two drivers, the Briton James Hunt and the Austrian Niki Lauda, during the 1976 Formula One motor-racing season. Ron Howard directed.

5. "Ford v Ferrari" (2019) - James Mangold directed this biopic about automobile designer Carroll Shelby and racer Ken Miles, who were hired by the Ford Motor Company to lead a team to build a race car that would defeat the perennially dominant Italian racing team Scuderia Ferrari at the 1966 24 Hours of Le Mans race in France. Matt Damon and Christian Bale.

6. "Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby" (2006) - Adam McKay wrote and directed this sports comedy about an immature yet successful NASCAR driver. Will Farrell starred.

7. "The Great Race" (1965) - Blake Edwards directed and co-wrote this comedic and fictionalized account of the 1908 New York to Paris Race. Tony Curtis, Jack Lemmon and Natalie Wood starred.

8. "Grand Prix" (1966) - John Frankenheimer directed this story about the fate of four Formula One drivers through a fictionalized version of the 1966 Formula One season. James Garner, Eva Marie Saint and Yves Montand starred.

9. "Viva Las Vegas" (1964) - Elvis Presley and Ann-Margaret starred in this musical comedy about a romance between a race car driver competing in Las Vegas' first annual Grand Prix race and a hotel swimming instructor. George Sidney directed.

10. "Cars" (2006) - John Lasseter directed and co-wrote this Disney animated film about a hotshot rookie race car named Lightning McQueen who gets stranded in Radiator Springs, a rundown town that is past its glory days. Owen Wilson starred.
