A Circa 1878 Wedding Gown
A Circa 1878 Wedding Gown
Today we present another interesting dress design from the Mid-Bustle/Natural Form Era with this circa 1878 wedding dress. Yes, you heard that right! This dress is part of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s collection and on their web site, the dress as identified as a “Wedding Ensemble.” Unfortunately, they don’t provide any information on how they arrived at that conclusion so this has to be…

Mid-Bustle Era/Natura Form - Asymmetrical Style
Mid-Bustle Era/Natura Form – Asymmetrical Style
We’re on a roll when it comes to Mid-Bustle/Natural Form style! Today we feature this day dress that was made by Maison Cécile Laisne sometime around 1879 in Paris. What’s interesting about this dress is the use of asymmetrical design elements: Maison Cécile Laisne, Day Dress, c. 1879; Metropolitan Museum of Art (C.I.45.38.2a, b) The skirt and bodice are made from a gold/champagne-colored silk…

Walking Around Bath
It’s a sunny day in Bath and we didn’t miss the opportunity to show off the Coca Cola dress! 😁 First to get ready… Yeah, checking the latest e-mails… 😁 The out we go! First stop was this nice, shady park area just by the Royal Crescent: This park was the perfect place to model the dress- all kinds of shade and natural lighting. And Voila! The Royal Crescent! It was a busy day with a lot of…

It’s the morning after the ball but that’s not stopping us! Off to the Pump Room for brunch and then walking it off in Bath! 😎😁 It was a wet, somewhat drizzly day so we opted to not going boating as we’d originally planned… A little wet but that quickly dried out later…It was a lot of fun. We’ll have more soon! Become a Patron!

Back In LA
After a smooth uneventful 11-hour flight, we’ve made it back to LA from London and it’s good to be back. The one thing that immediately hit us was just how sunny and warm California is- after a week and a half in the UK, the contrast was almost like night and day. While we were in the UK, it was mostly cloudy, cool, and often misting/drizzling. And that’s the Spring weather… 😁 Anyway, we’re glad…

Late 1880s Style - The Flower Pot Hat
Late 1880s Style – The Flower Pot Hat
During the late 19th Century, hats were considered to an essential fashion accessory for both women and men and as such, you were not considered to be completely dressed for leaving home unless you wore one. While hats had their origins as a practical means of protecting the head against the elements, it didn’t take long before hats also became to be considered as more of a fashion accessory…

Some Early 1880s Style
Some Early 1880s Style
Today we take a look at some extant examples of early 1880s styles from various collections with an emphasis on bodices- our newest fixation. 😉 First up is this circa 1881-83 day dress from the Metropolitan Museum of Art (MET Museum): Day Dress, c. 1881-1883; Metropolitan Museum of Art (C.I.43.44.4a, b) This dress rather closely follows the early 1880s silhouette with a short bodice combined with…

1880s Style - It Wasn't All Parisian Couturiers
1880s Style – It Wasn’t All Parisian Couturiers
When looking at historical fashions, it’s quite easy to be attracted to the more elaborate and flashy styles of Worth, Pingat, Felix, or Doucet. However, there was a lot more than that and one often finds interesting designs from lesser known (or completely unknown) designers and especially here in the United States. Also, while the Parisian couturiers were acknowledged as fashion leaders, their…

Aesthetic Dress & Tea Gowns- When Design & Function Come Together
Aesthetic Dress & Tea Gowns- When Design & Function Come Together
Aesthetic, or Artistic, dress was an outgrowth of the Aesthetic Movement and as such, was a fashion trend that arose out of reaction to the heavily structured and trim heavily trimmed fashions of the late Nineteenth Century. In contrast, the Aesthetic Dress movement focused on basing fashion on simplicity of design and quality materials. Aesthetic Dress drew many of its ideas from the…

1880s Fall Colors
It’s hard to believe that we’re moving towards the Fall, especially here in the American Southwest but it’s true and one can see it in the shifting of the sun. Although colors were not formally assigned to a season as it common today in the fashion world (this was before Pantone, after all 😉). Darker colors did tend to be associated with the colder months of the year. Below is one interesting…
