By the time he arrived in Coolgardie in 1894, the town had three dirt streets, a few shops and tents pitched for miles out into miserable country, a landscape of rubble stripped of timber.
Tumblr media
Afghan camel trains added some colour to the confusion. But there was nothing left for D'arcy there.
Some hundreds of leases are pegged around Coolgardie. Most of them appear to be to be taken up purely and solely for speculative purposes. If there are ten out of every hundred claims pegged payable when a battery starts then I will be agreeably surprised.

It’s been a long fucking day, and Eddie’s back is killing him. The boots he wears for work don’t quite cut it anymore. He’s been secretly thinking about buying inserts for them, but he can’t force himself to go and actually buy the damn things. As if admitting that he needs the support would result in the rest of his body giving up its battle against middle-age.
He ignores the way his shoulder clicks when he reaches into the back seat to grab the few bags of groceries and the gallon of milk that sits in the passenger’s side back seat. He offered to run out after work, knowing you’re likely just as exhausted and sore as he is. Probably more. You’ve already given up the fight with your body, having bought a pair of orthopedic sneakers 2 years ago for your shifts at the hospital.
Eddie sees the light in the living room is on. Even now, all of these years later, his heart misses a beat when he thinks about seeing you. It’s a relief to be in your presence, the time apart always leaves him feeling like a piece is missing. Like he’s forgetting something important. He only feels completely at ease when you’re within eyesight or ear shot. When there is indisputable evidence that you exist, and that you’re safe.
Eddie keeps his keys out just in case as he approaches the front door of your tiny home. He puts his hand on the knob and turns it. He’s not mad, he’s just disappointed. He sighs heavily, and pushes open the door. He’s ready to lay into you about forgetting to lock the front door, again.
He kicks off his boots, the relief he feels is immediate. That deep ache in his toes lessens a little with them on the soft carpet of the entryway. He peeks his head into the living room, a lecture already on his tongue when he lays his eyes on you. You’re curled up like a cat in his armchair. You’re wearing your readers with the silver granny chain around your neck. A needle is held between the fingers of one hand, and the other holds an embroidery hoop. You have a piece of embroidery floss caught up in the hair that’s peeking out from under your beanie - it’s bright blue. It doesn’t quite match the orange t-shirt and brown afghan you have thrown over your lap.
You fix your gaze on him over the rim of your glasses and indelicately work the floss off of your lips with your tongue before saying, “Oh! Thank you, Baby. I really didn’t want to have to go out looking like this. Can you believe how much that milk cost? It’s gone up at least 25% since this time last year. Oh, yeah, did you remember the super pads? I swear, I think I ejected my entire uterus last night.”
Eddie stands there, forgetting what he was so ready to say as he was walking through the door. He can’t help it. How could he remember anything when he’s in the presence of the most beautiful person in the world?

Mae baby could I trouble you for doctor!remus and a reader who’s just started bc and medicine for her insulin that makes her wholly unwell and him just comforting her, please?? I feel like absolute trash rn but my doctor assured me it’ll pass within the first week so 🤞🏼 she’s right but the nausea is killing me
Fawn!! Sweetheart you could never trouble me. I hope you start feeling better soon! Thanks for requesting <3
cw: nausea
doctor!Remus x fem!reader ♡ 404 words
You hear the front door open, and you have no shame about summoning Remus to you with a pitiful whine.
“Coming,” he says. You hear the sound of him taking his shoes off behind you, and then he’s lowering himself next to the couch, divot between his brows. “Hi, dovey.” He rubs your upper arm through the afghan you’ve curled up beneath. “Still not feeling well?”
“There has to be something wrong,” you plead. “This can’t be what it’s supposed to do.”
Remus’ mouth pinches compassionately. “I think it is,” he murmurs, soft as silk, “but I know the side effects are miserable. Is your tummy hurting?”
You hum in woeful affirmation. “I feel like I’m gonna be sick, too.”
The crease on your boyfriend’s forehead worsens. “Yeah?” He raises a long-fingered hand to your forehead, feeling with the backs of his knuckles. His amber eyes rove your face concernedly. “Hm. You haven’t taken the one for dinner yet, have you?”
You shake your head, and he nods approvingly.
“Good. What’d you have for lunch?”
You shrink into the cushions a bit. “Toast.”
Remus levels you with a stern look. “I wonder why you’re feeling nauseous,” he drawls. You let out a low whine, and he softens, setting his hand atop your head and scratching lightly at your scalp. “You know you need to eat more than that before taking these, sweet girl.”
“I know.” You turn your head to see him better, giving him full view of your forlorn countenance. Another wave of nausea takes you, and his expression twinges with sympathy when you shudder. “I just feel like if I have more I’ll be sick.”
“I know,” he coos, leaning forward to smear a kiss under your eye. “I know, dove, but you’ve gotta try. I’ll make us something good tonight, okay? Then when you have your next pill, you might feel a bit better.”
The might and a bit don’t make you very optimistic, but you nod anyway. Remus gives you a little smile, fingertips still scratching your scalp comfortingly.
“Is your head still bothering you as well?” he asks.
“No,” you say, and you don’t have to fake the hope in your voice. “That went away.”
“Good,” Remus hums. His gaze on yours is weighted with worry and sympathy, but all buried beneath a good helping of love. “We’ll get you feeling better yet, sweet girl. Just let me work.”

so we're all just as mad (or more!) about Pakistan ordering deportation of 1 million Afghan refugees for no good reason as we are about Israel ordering evacuation of 1 million Gazans from an active war zone, right? we're all talking about how evil Pakistan is just as much? we're all taking this opportunity to talk about the founding of Pakistan and about how you can't just declare a country in the 1940's and kill all the Hindu people within your borders (and ignoring that India was also killing the Muslim people within their borders) (and also ignoring any other context re: founding and borders of India and Pakistan) and so therefore all Pakistani people are evil? and we're talking about how many people died in the partition and how many people were displaced and demanding that the grandchildren of those refugees be allowed to return and reclaim all their property? right??? we're all just as up-in-arms???? we're all going to protests and covering campuses in flags and flyers denouncing Pakistan? we're harassing random people with Pakistani family and demanding their opinions?
no?
well that's fucking fascinating. i would love to know why.

“Animation is just for kids!”
...Ok...Ok...Let’s take a look at some of that animation that’s “Just for kids,” shall we?
Adventure Time is a series that touches a lot on philosophical questions and theories, with one episode having one character ask “If just being born is the greatest act of creation then what are you supposed to do after that?”
Avatar: The Last Airbender dives deep into having characters question what is right and wrong when dealing with a horrible evil. Like, is it better to harm anybody, even the most innocent old man, just because their society is run by fascists? Should we torture those who tortured us? And should we really kill someone just because they are irredeemable? All hard questions, each with uneasy answers.
The Owl House has a powerful antagonist whose goal is to commit genocide on an entire race of innocent people due to being raced to believe that said people are evil, thus stating that the most dangerous people are the ones who are prejudiced and ignorant.
Centaurworld  has a scene where a man tries to drown an elk. No, I’m not kidding. That happened. It was on screen and everything.
Encanto teaches a lesson on generational trauma, the pressures of living up to expectations, and stating that the best gift is being alive and having those around you.
And do I even have to say ANYTHING about Pixar?! The Incredibles, Ratatouille, Up, Inside Out, Soul, and even Toy Story all have themes and morals that can speak to adults while also being simple enough for kids to understand.
But that’s just animation for kids. Let’s talk about animation for ADULTS, shall we?
South Park takes a comedic view of our society, poking fun in the many ways it’s broken.
The Breadwinner is a tense movie of a young, Afghan girl disguising herself as a boy so she can go out and make money so her family can survive.
Invincible has some of the most brutal scenes I’ve seen from a superhero series, including this moment with a train (you’ll know it when you see it) that was so horrific that, when it cut to black for a second, I saw the look of pure shock and terror of my face reflected onto my laptop.
And Bojack Horseman is the best adult-animated series I’ve ever seen because it tackles issues made for adults. Things like opium addiction, depression, the struggles of being asexual in a sex-driven world, and telling one truth that most adults need to hear. The truth that, in this life, you can’t live happily ever after. You’re alive, always have another problem to deal with, and then you’re dead. There’s no point, in this plane of existence, when you’re happy forever and ever. Because life’s a show, and when everybody’s happy, then there can’t be a show anymore.
Animation. Is not. For kids.
Animation is a medium that is often geared towards kids. And the reason why people keep saying it’s for kids is because they focus on the kids stuff and refuse to look at how mature some animated movies and shows can be.
