Pairing: Abby Anderson x reader
Genre: fluff
Words: 1400
Note: So this is my 30th fic and it's also the first day of spring so I wanted to put out this little thing that's been living in my head rent free lately. It is far from the fandoms I normally write for but here we are. I'm warning you the events of the game are kinda swithed around to fit the story. I hope you'll like it anyway.
Tumblr media
Life hasn’t been easy on you. From the moment your mother sent you to a Firefly base when you were still just a child, you had to fight and fend for yourself. Earning everything you had, contributing to be fed, helping to have a place to sleep, growing up has been tough. And still you could thank heavens you were placed with the Fireflies who protected you and took care of you in the apocalypse. You imagined the worst thing that could happen to someone was to be left alone. You had friends amongst the other children, adults who brought you up, and Abby.
Abby was never too close nor too far from you, having closer friends but always keeping an eye out for you. You were inseparable back in the Salt Lake City, and even when your group disbanded, you followed her anywhere she wanted to go, your next refuge being the WLFs. You never questioned her, never doubted her decisions. Not until she killed Joel Miller. You understood, Abby’s dad being the closest thing you had to your own, but even after she leveled the score, the hunger for revenge didn’t settle. The more ruthless she became the more you drifted apart.
All the tension or fondness was lost in the days and weeks she spent away hunting down members of Ellie’s group. If you were once friends, now you were hardly two people who used to know each other. Yet you never lost your hope in her, believing she’ll come to her senses and actually live her life focused on herself and not the blood of others. The rumors of Fireflies regrouping gave you hope. You’d finally find a home again together.
“Abby please, fuck this WLF shit and let’s just go back.” You reasoned with her, when you met by luck after another few months not hearing from each other.
“I still have shit to do here.” She argued unwavering in her stance.
“Like what? We both know Isaac’s plan is trash.” You furrowed your brows at her.
“Just because you’re not at the top of the game doesn’t mean everyone else is dumber than you Y/n.” She scoffed at you.
“Excuse me, I don’t give a shit what ranking he gave to anyone!” You folded you hands over your chest.
“Yeah yeah, just because you’re low. Don’t pretend you wouldn’t like being a commander.” She taunts you.
“Now you’re just being mean. You know I don’t give a fuck about that.” You weren’t going to let her off that easily this time.
“You’re just jealous. Go run back to the Fireflies where you’re cared for like the lost puppy you are and leave the real job to the big girls.” She levels you with a look of cruelty and disdain.
“Fine. But don’t run back to me when you get lost again.” Shaking your head you leave to pack your backpack so you can have a head start for when the WLF finds out you’re a traitor.
You didn’t give a shit anymore for any one of them, you didn’t want to join any petty fights for territory of supplies. You wanted to live as close to a normal person as anyone could and maybe, just maybe try and help save the world somehow, or make it just a little bit better. You couldn’t do that at the WLF, but with the Fireflies you could at least try. They weren’t saints, but in comparison to the WLF and Seraphites they were your safest option. Maybe it was finally time to let Abby go her way after the countless times you tried to save her from the fate she was choosing for herself.
As you’re packing to leave, you hear Abby in an argument with Mel. You didn’t want to eavesdrop, but you simply couldn’t help yourself. “You’re a piece of shit, Abby.” Is all you can make out before Mel slams the door and you leave in fear of being discovered watching their moment. You didn’t agree, but you couldn’t argue against it either. The more time passed on the more questionable choices Abby was making. The last thing you wanted to do was abandon Abby, yet that’s what she was continuously forcing you to do. Maybe you needed to listen to your own advice and start focusing on your own life instead of others.
While she runs off to do god knows what with god knows who, you travel to the Catalina Island alone. It was a loose thread, but it was still a better shot than nothing. Plus it wasn’t like you could turn back and crawl back to the WLF begging for their forgiveness, if there even was any WLF anymore. And to your luck, the Fireflies excitedly accept you back, happy to regain one of Anderson’s medical students you used to be back in Salt Lake City before your mission to save the population and find a cure went to trash. For months you watched out for any rumors of tracks of Abby but all the leads run cold. The group couldn’t contact her even when she made a contact with them some time after you joined, promising to arrive in a few days. But few days turned into months and Abby Anderson was considered lost and dead, even though no one talked about it or mentioned it.
Until you found her. She and one of the new boys she met, Lev, in a boat arrived at the island in a pitiful state of barely living. Being part of the medical team now, you treated their injuries and took care of nursing them back to health. While you left Lev to be watched over by the team, you couldn’t stand leaving Abby in such cold and unwelcoming place unknown to her. So you took her to rest in your own apartment not too far away, laying her down on your washed out pillows but in warm sheets and clean duvets none the less.
“Y/n.” She states with a horse voice she clearly hasn’t used for some time.
“Shh, it’s okay. I’ve got you now.” You assure her cleaning her bleeding wounds.
As she falls back into her delirious dreams you treat her injuries dressing them up in a clean white gauze, finding many new cuts and bruises, some of which you could hardly imagine what caused them. Even her face was littered with wounds deep enough to leave a nasty scar. She lost a noticeable amount of muscle and her once toned arms seemed weaker now cover in blood. Her dirty blonde hair you often braided for her were messily cut off too short and covered in layers of dirt and soil.
“Hey, you need to drink something.” You carefully wake her up to get her started back on some fluids as soon as possible.
“Hmh...” She clearly wanted to say something but she hardly had the energy to even stay conscious.
“Don’t, it’s gonna be okay. Everything’s going to be okay.” You pacify her after you half force some water into her.
“Don’t leave!” She catches your arm weakly with the most scared and vulnerable look you’ve ever seen on her.
“I won’t.” you assure her as you lay down in bed next to her, careful not to touch any of her wounds to not cause her any more discomfort or pain.
“Just hold me.” Abby pleads with you, but she didn’t have to ask you twice.
“I’ve got you. You’ll be okay.” You comfort her as you stroke her short hair and hold her shivering shoulders. “Everything is going to be fine.”
“I’m sorry.” Abby whines halfway unconscious again.
“Don’t be. You’re home. You are cared for.” You whisper to her as you rock her weakened body back to sleep.
You give her a little kiss into the crown of her hair. She was still the most beautiful and precious thing to you, no matter her crimes and punishments. It will grow back eventually. Her injuries will heal, and all of this will become just a faded memory over time. You’ll help her fight off any scarecrows and demons of her past, in her dreams and in the reality. She was finally back, and you won’t ever let her leave again. You both already lost too much in your hunt for revenge and justice. You finally found your home.

this post was initially gonna be like a lazy rant about how the Klaww Gang's team dynamics suck ass but the more i wrote the more i realised there's so much to discuss. so today let's discuss how the Klaww Gang's team dynamics suck ass but not on like surface-level y'know?
Tumblr media
i'm not even sure if the Klaww Gang qualifies as an actual gang because they barely even acknowledge each other? their interactions are very scarce. off the top of my head we get Rajan's party which they all attend apart from Dimitri (Dimitri attending Rajan's party would be so bizarre btw) and Jean Bison's phone call with Arpeggio. these are things friends do so maybe they should be the Klaww Friends ? i mean they have the sinister-looking conference room but we never see them hold a meeting there. moreover, they all act out of pure self-interest. they each got a Clockwerk part and just went on to do their own thing like counterfeit, drug production, etc. i mean what's even the point of forming a gang if their goal was to just split Clockwerk parts and then disband? did they have any other operations in the works? Arpeggio was planning on double-crossing the rest of the members anyway and he needed them to actually have the parts for his plan to come to fruition but still seems a bit pointless.
interesting question: how exactly did the Cairo Museum heist go down? was it like a group activity or pulled off by a single member? or did Arpeggio have Neyla break in and take them? because i can't imagine the Klaww Gang members coming together like an Ocean's movie to steal a bunch of robot owl parts? in fact, i can't imagine any of them stealing in the traditional like robber kinda way. with the exception of Bison and maybe Arpeggio, they're all shown to have some sort of prestige in their own part of the world: Dimitri was an established artist and nightclub owner and as shown in the comics hanged out with elitist socialites; the Contessa was a high-ranking Interpol officer; Rajan threw a lavish ball with hundreds of guests. like i wouldn't be surprised if the Klaww Gang members had institutional power. maybe they just bribed the museum to give them the parts?
and then there's the fact that they were a complete failure. i can't help but compare them to the Fiendish Five, who, let's admit it, won. they "won" in the sense that they achieved their goal. it's not like anyone stopped them. sure, Sly whooped their ass years later but they still killed ConnEr and split the Thievius Raccoonus. they went on with their lives until Sly grew up. like the first game is very much a revenge story. the Klaww Gang? not so much. the game takes place right after the Cairo Museum heist so all their scheming and plans could only take place for like maybe a couple of months max. and let's not forget they were also tricked by Neyla. flops.
Tumblr media
i'm not sure why but i also think the Fiendish Five can evade the criticisms highlighted above even though they were also a bunch of strangers? Clockwerk was a much more menacing boss than Arpeggio (if Arpeggio can even be considered a boss. more like a final member), like i don't think anyone from the Fiendish Five would dare question his plan or motivations. but also, i think there was an underlining sense of camaraderie when each of them warned us about the next one post-bossfight, like at least some respect. i can't say the same for the Klaww Gang, like i can't even imagine the Contessa, Jean Bison and Dimitri interacting with each other (and now i suddenly can't think of anything i need more in my life). Clockwerk feels like the Fiendish Five's employer and he brought them together to pull off something kinda sacred like continuing the cycle of raccoon murders. basically they got together and did a thing and that was it like they just casually went on with their lives after that. Clockwerk was immortal, for all we know and as i have previously theorised there could have been previous iterations of the Fiendish Five throughout history. just baddies recruited by Clockwerk to help him take down the Coopers.
so yea. the Klaww Gang very much sucked ass but !!! i think it was for the better. even if i compared them to the Fiendish Five, i feel like SP wanted to set the expectations by making it seem like we were going to receive something similar just to then have things go down very differently. the Klaww Gang is different because its members (were under the illusion that they) were autonomous. they weren't let in on the big picture (What is this with clocks, bro? Have you no vision?) and they all thought they were the gang's top dog. this made for something very different, especially when you throw Neyla and outlawed Carmelita into the mix. but their team dynamics still sucked ass.

It's upon the two youngest to clean up after dinner. Saiwa and Jeb already went over to their room and Vlad and Kiyoshi are about to go upstairs too. Ji Ho: "Vlad. The Bond. Can we?"
Tumblr media
Omg they are still not able to talk to each other in whole sentences! But Vlad knows what Ji Ho needs. He felt it too. The bond wants them to touch... It's still so awkward.
Tumblr media
Vlad is hesistant. He wanted this to end and spare Ji Ho from the demands of their Bond. But that's not possible anymore. They need to stay together to avoid further disaster and they already said 'yes' to the bond and each other.
Tumblr media
Since Ji Ho now knows they have a home in the Otherworld and are safe there, he is contended with his life with Vlad and the Bond. He will learn how to love Vlad and they will live the best life they can have. And he loves to be touched by Vlad and trusts him. That's a beginning, right? (Usually Ji Ho hates it to be touched due to his traumatic childhood.)
Tumblr media
Vlad sighs. They will overcome this too. Ji Ho doesn't love him so Vlad won't go any further than embracing Ji Ho to please their Bond. And only touch him when Ji Ho voluntarly comes to him. And only long enough to make the bond happy (for a while)... (Yes, Vlad, you're a man of honor, we get that.) But it's so hard for Vlad because he loves Ji Ho more than his own life. And it feels so good.
Tumblr media
Jack: "I'm so happy so see you two finally getting closer. We will continue our how-to-love-Vlad lessons and I will show you that Vlad is the best for you, hm? You were able to love Luci and this will help you to love Vlad, right?" Jack is determined ^^' Vlad is his best friend and Ji Ho is like a brother to him. He wants them to be happy.
Tumblr media
Jack hadn't been at the Temple for a while to get his pain treated by Arturo so Ji Ho is helping him to get back into meditation.
Tumblr media
And after meditation, Ji Ho and Jack were talking for a while. Jack told Ji Ho what he learned at the Temple. That he hadn't been able to feel 'this fated mates thing' with his Alpha because he'd been protecting himself from the pain that his Alpha would have caused him if he gave in and therefore couldn't fully commit to him."
Tumblr media
Jack: "I'll take you to the Temple too when we're back home. I'm sure Arturo can help you. Maybe you are protecting yourself from loving Vlad too?" Ji Ho: "What do you mean?" Jack: "I'm quite sure you already do love Vlad. You fell in love with Luci before you knew it was him, right? And Luci is Vlad - and the Bond." Ji Ho: "Maybe you are right... I can't wait to meet Arturo!"
Tumblr media
It's already late and Ji Ho eventually went upstairs. And Jack figured that it's less painful when he shifts into wolf. And the warmth of the fire is doing him good too. The (Were)wolf and the seven six Little Goats :3
Tumblr media
Meanwhile Vlad cared for Kiyoshi. And he thought about what Saiwa said. That Ji Ho cared for him/Luci when his soul was in hell. Yes, Ji Ho and him already saw anything from each other but that was after that!
Tumblr media
Kiyoshi is still not responding/acting like a tree. Vlad: "Kiyoshi. Come back. We need to help Jack."
Tumblr media
… I'll be there for you (When the rain starts to pour) I'll be there for you (Like I've been there before) I'll be there for you ('Cause you're there for me too)

i Am so down to hear the clans lore dump that lore on me 👀
Thank you so much for enabling me I really appreciate it <3
Lichenclan are actually the stragglers of a former clan called Creekclan. There were a few clans living in the general area (Lichenclan's neighbors are Bayclan, Dancingclan, Waspclan, Thrushclan, and Dryclan) (I might delete one of those because that's so much), but none of them really bothered to interfere with each other as much. So when Creekclan's leader, Firstar, started receiving false visions from a Dark Forest cat, no one outside of her own clan noticed.
Firstar was convinced that it was Starclan speaking to her, and so she hung on every word she was told. She exiled the clan's sole healer, Olivetuft, after learning that she was expecting kits. She was convinced that Starclan wanted her to disband the clan, or else terrible things would happen. In the middle of the night, she called a clan meeting and declared that Creekclan would be no more. Firstar's mate and deputy, Eveningstorm, left with her. The remnants of Creekclan had no leadership.
Former clanmates went their separate ways, losing their sense of comradery when prey became hard to find and herbs became a limited resource. Many cats left the territories altogether to become rogues or kittypets, while some sought asylum in their neighboring clans.
Pinefoot was one of the warriors who refused to let go of the clan. He had an immature insistence that they could band together and sort out leadership on their own, but his former clanmates didn't share the same ideals, and he was chased out of any small group he found. He ended up just outside the twolegplace, where he met with his former clanmate Lichenheart, who had settled into life as a kittypet and was expecting kits of her own. His pathetic nature convinced Lichenheart to help him out.
While living with Lichenheart's twolegs, Pinefoot began to have visions of starry-furred cats in the yard outside, leading him in the direction of the woods. After a moon of this, Pinefoot told Lichenheart that he believed Starclan was trying to tell him something. With her litter just around the corner, Lichenheart was reluctant to leave, but she trusted Pinefoot.
The starry-furred cats led Pinefoot and Lichenheart to a pine forest, specifically to a sunken clearing surrounded by a natural protection of brambles and stones. Pinefoot believed that Starclan had showed the two of them a new camp where Creekclan could be reborn. The new camp was put to the test when, a few nights later, Lichenheart had a single kit. She named him Rushkit, her formal commitment to starting this new clan with Pinefoot.
Pinefoot believed that, although Starclan had showed him the camp, Lichenheart should be leader. She was more responsible than him, and had trained an apprentice in Creekclan. Lichenheart planned to travel to the Moongrove and receive her nine lives when she'd recovered from giving birth, but her condition continued to worsen, turning into greencough.
Pinefoot searched the territory for any cat that had healing skills. He stumbled upon the den of Olivetuft and her newborn daughter, Berry. He pleaded with her to come treat Lichenheart, but by the time they made it back to camp, Olivetuft knew there was nothing more she could do except make Lichenheart's last few days painless. She was the first cat buried in Lichenclan's graveyard.
Olivetuft and Pinefoot traveled to the Moongrove together to speak with Starclan. They gave Pinefoot nine lives and his new name, Pinestar, and entrusted him with the infancy of this new clan. He was officially a leader of something new - Pinestar, Olivetuft, Rushkit, and Berrykit. He named the clan Lichenclan, in honor of his friend.
Eventually, the rest of the founders wandered into Pinestar's life and stayed in the clan. I could get into all of their histories, but then this post would be even longer than it is, haha. But after all that....well, the rest is history!

Hi Jen!
Im 20y and a lesbian that loves lesbian history and im just wondering about that Era that you lived as a lesbian: the 80's and e the 70's.
There was so many lesbian magazines, zines, activism....i spend hours of my days reading online the Lavender Menace magazine and Sinister Wisdom, its just so amazing to me that lesbians created a fundation of their our culture, language and lifestyle at the time. So my question is, how was it back then compared to today since we dont have the same kind of community, we have barely 5 lesbian bars in the whole US and our activism is fragmented almost non existent? Especially since lesbophobia or oppresion on homossexuals did not end and we still face it.
Thanks, and I love your blog.
I was lucky enough to come out in a place, Iowa City, where lesbians were well organized and active. Iowa City was the home of a Women's Press printing group that formed under the idea that "We coudn't get it printed so we learned how to print". That press was disbanded in 1985 but it's legacy lived on. My lesbian community was broad and diverse and welcoming. They had a history of working together even if they weren't old enough or active in the political side of things in the early 80's. The foundation of lesbians (women) working together was built and we stood on that solid ground.
I was never a big reader of lesbian history. I preferred to experience it in life, to hear the stories from the other lesbians in my community or at festival or wherever I could corner some woman to tell her about her life. But sometimes now I read over the older pamphlets and news letters and every time it renews my passion to pass on lesbian culuture and positivity to others. I see the importance of keeping papers and not relying on computer documents and only oral, unrecorded stories.
What used to be the University of Iowa Lesbian archives is now housed under the LGBTQIA archives but you can still seach “lesbian” and they curators/volunteers (at least one of which is a butch lesbians ;) )are happy to email you images to read. You can look for entire collections and almost all are digitized or in the process. Through that archive you aill find new places to search. They have   tiktok as well.
https://lgbtqiowa.org/history-by-letter/history-by-letter-1-iowa-city-womens-press/
Most universities have some sort of lesbian archive in their special collections. They are a great place to start for local lesbian history. And they are more than happy to share. Some even offer free lectures if you want to organize the space (public library) and do some advertising.
www.LConline.org is Lesbian Connection. You can subscribe for about 35.00 or free to lesbians is you can’t afford to pay. They often sell back issues.
Now that you have some new sources. Heres how it was for me when I came out in 1993, just out of college to years and living in Iowa City which was often called the Gayest town in Iowa. A sort of gay and lesbian bubble in a state not known for diversity.
We have a gay club, in every major city. Des Moines with several, Iowa City, Cedar Rapids, the Qaud Cities and Waterloo/Cedar Falls. We have an unofficial lesbian club ( a bar owned by lesbians, close enough) in Iowa City. We were all in our early to late 20′s and so going out and dancing/drinking was sort of a go to for us. We had lesbian pool, dart. softball, volleyball (my favorite) and kickball leagues. Only lesbians. There were gay men leagues as well and we sometimes played each other for fun. There were also mixed groups for those who wanted to play on multiple nights or wanted that space. We had a BLAST!  After (and often during games) we shared beer and laughter, meals and snacks.
The bars that hosted us were mostly straight and we brought income and activitiy so we had no push back and were often invited to new ones. The volleyball and softball fields gave us equpment to use and sometimes a business, like a bar or restaurant would give us t shirts. If we wore those shirts around we sometimes got discounts. What a grand time we had!
As we got older going out or playing sports and practicing 2 or 3 nights a week became more difficult. Jobs, kids, home ownership and priorities shifted. Instead my friend group had monthly potlucks or meeting at a restaurant. The lesbian bar burned down and was not rebuilt so we took to camp fires at each others homes or meals at diners on Saturday morning.
Women’s Festivals became an important part of my life and that of my lesbian friends. I started going in 1994 when introduced by my first girlfriend and friend group. In the later years, when we were not as active locally due to life being busy, we would spend time planning and prepping for that 7 to 10 day camping in a state 7 hours away. We would gather with a purpose and eat and drink and talk about memories and what fun we will have on vacation.  Those 7 days camping at a women’s festival gave us the down time to hang out and renew our friendships. Time to talk and laugh and dance and catch up without the world in the way. Without that women’s festival being the steady, predictable place for us to meet I am not sure our friend group would still be strong like it is.
Now we meet to talk about the “old days” over food or campfires. We zoomed over covid realizing how much we missed each other and how life had gotten in the way. Since then we try harder to make time. We are getting back to festivals and bring new, young lesbians on board to experience what was life changing to us. To ME.  We work together (my boss and her wife and my first ex are all friends from my coming out days). We MAKE time to eat out or camp or just sit in lawn chairs in back yards.
This is my lesbian experience. And I wish all lesbians could land in the lap of such a strong group of women like I did. NOT that there was not drama LOL. Of course there were exes and breakups and disagreements but when someone needed time she knew she could take it and we would keep inviting. No one was shamed for “never coming” because we all knew not joining in now did not mean she would not want to come back in the future.
When the world gets too much and i look in my DM’s or on line and see younger or newly out older lesbians suffering from distress caused by isolation or the current political envirnonment or lack of lesbian role models I go to my friends and talk and listen and get hugs. They ultimately give me hope and I take that out into the world.
We are finding each other and the key is to translate on line community to in person community. headcanons expanding on the verse of my jingren psycho-pass AU oneshot, "for whom will you bare your fangs?" on AO3.
-jing yuan is criminally asymptomatic. sibyl system wants to include him in its network, but he's been able to dodge all threats and offers his way somehow. up until the system found out about his abnormality, he was able to camouflage and manipulate his own psycho-pass to match others' in order to not stand out. to sibyl, he is regarded as "one who borrows the mind of others and has no face of his own."
-blade was deemed a latent criminal from early on, so he spent most of his life confined. he was young enough to recall good times with his parents, but also old enough to realize that he was losing his future for things he hasn't done yet. when his family cut ties with him, he decided to discard his name as well.
-blade is aware of jing yuan keeping secrets from him, but he doesn't know what they're about. he's trusting that jing yuan has a good reason for it but uhh
their division:
-jing yuan and blade's unit currently comprises of fu xuan, their analyst, and ma yanqing (senior), another enforcer.
-their call signs are shepherd (inspector; jing yuan) and hound (enforcers; blade and ma yanqing)
-jing yuan and blade first met during a joint operation between both divisions. their different methods and approaches to the situation put them at odds with each other until they had to be physically pulled apart. not too long after, jing yuan recruited blade into his unit.
-fu xuan regularly has to deal with covering up for both of them. since she's their resident researcher, analyst, and medical expert all rolled into one, she's often the most exhausted of their group.
-ma yanqing (senior) is the oldest member in more ways than one. he is the only original member remaining; he was there to see jing yuan as a fresh new inspector and fu xuan being assigned as their analyst. he is struggling to dissuade his nephew, yanqing (junior) from pursuing a future job at the crime investigation department of the public safety bureau.
blade's old unit:
-this disbanded group was blade's first experience getting along with others, so the memories of them are something he holds fondly. the members were his friends, mentors, and coworkers, and even if this profession is all he's ever known, he still thinks highly of them.
-blade's old unit comprised of one inspector, dan feng, and two other enforcers, jingliu and baiheng. they are each officially marked as MIA. blade is still searching for their whereabouts, but it has proven fruitless. jing yuan knows what happened, but hasn't told him.
-jingliu was originally an inspector that got too close to the truth of the sibyl system and was demoted for her silence in exchange for her life. she has always regretted only taking the demotion for what happened to the rest of her former division members.
-dan feng became an person of interest for sibyl (just like jing yuan eventually did), and baiheng sacrifices herself to protect him from sibyl. after she gave her life to save his, he attempted to completely destroy himself to prevent sibyl from collecting any sort of data based on him, but both lives ended in vain. sibyl then created a synthetic being using what data is left of his brain, dan heng, to take his place.
-jingliu was not present due to an injury she received from a previous case. after learning about what happened to dan feng and baiheng, she escaped the country and becomes a renegade. she begrudgingly became jing yuan's outside source of information against sibyl. she hates blade for not knowing what happened to their old unit, but he doesn't know a damn thing what is he supposed to do
-if blade learns about any of this he will 100% go fucking nuts and he will be twice as berserk when he learns that jing yuan kept him in the dark on purpose, even if it was for his own good. like if that ever happens, jing yuan better have a good plan on how not to die
the jingren section:
-they're often found in the training room together. blade occasionally ends up breaking some equipment, and jing yuan always offers to pay for replacements.
-blade only has one tie for his suit and it was given to him by jing yuan. the only times he actually wears it are when he needs to cover marks the other man left on him.
-jing yuan didn't start smoking until he met blade and only smokes in blade's dorm.
-their choice in reads and philosophies repeal each other, but jing yuan has started picking up on reading blade's books whenever he visits him. blade reads as much paperback as possible.
-blade feels a lot of complex feelings for jing yuan, but he's most frustrated with him for showing him things that he's missed out on in a lot of his life for being branded a latent criminal as a child. "I would have been fine just being called a hunting dog. now that I know about all these things that I missed out on, I am growing greedy for a life I don't know of. and I resent him for that."
-their relationship doesn't have a strong feeling of romance. it's more built on the feeling of belonging, interest, and comfort, the feeling of like-mindedness despite being opposites. sometimes they use their rivaling ideologies to compete and encourage each other. they're partners that know each other well enough to understand what to do without needing to say anything, and blade will often act on his own during cases knowing what jing yuan is planning. those unspoken and unpredictable patterns have earned him the nickname of "jing yuan's wild dog"
-blade's frustrations with jing yuan often come out during sex and it's no surprise that his numbers and color go nuts. he is so damn aggressive that jing yuan doesn't really have to do anything for a while before he gets to make a move himself. jing yuan likes to satisfy blade like that, let him rage out and take his fill before giving it to him as much as he wants.

The Lies we Tell Ourselves
Reading this week’s chapter of Akane Banashi got me in the mood to talk about some aspects of Japanese culture that may be lesser known by the fandom outside of Japan, and how Wano, along with other arcs, incorporates some of them.
Tumblr media
These panels are what motivated me to make this post. Traditionally, Oiran were entertainers first and foremost, learning many skills ranging from playing music, conversational skills, both things Komurasaki has been shown to be skilled at, as well as calligraphy, flower arranging, and more. She also held the highest rank a courtesan can have, being Tayu. Holding that rank meant that she would be not have taken on any sex work whatsoever. So I don’t want to see anyone saying Toki “forced Hiyori into a life of slavery.” She did nothing but make the best of a bad situation to ensure that Hiyori would be protected and in good care, trusting best kappa Kawamatsu to raise her daughter.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And what a fine job Kawamatsu did in the years the two were in hiding together. Hiyori’s words here make it unquestionably clear that it was her decision to make the gamble and flee from Kawamatsu, putting his well being above her own. She didn’t know Denjiro would be in a position to take her in afterward, or even that she would meet another ally she could trust.
Tumblr media
And again, it is Hiyori herself who made the decision here, deciding to trust his words and dedicate herself to completing the difficult training that becoming an Oiran would require. Denjiro merely asked her to be brave. Sounds a lot like Toki/Kin’emon asking the same of Momo, just before sending him and the Akazaya members to the future in chapter 1047. Do I think it’s a particularly healthy mindset when it comes to self preservation? Hell no, but it got them through and is what many of Wano’s prominent faces know. Now I’m thinking about God Usopp’s and Izo’s words to Kiku again, there is value in living beyond the battle, even after dealing with the shame of defeat and of losing your leader.
If Usopp had thrown in the towel at the first chance he got, he would have croaked before ever entering the Grand Line. And now I’m thinking about the former Usopp Pirates protecting Kaya, who was pretty unconcerned with her own well being for a bit there, lying to herself because she didn’t want to accept what was right in front of her. Sounds a lot like the Akazaya’s struggle, and especially Kiku’s, during the raid.
Then there is past Usopp, asking his mother to not say such fatalistic things, even if she has to lie. The arc ends with the captain of the Usopp Pirates disbanding the group and wanting to keep everything a secret from the villagers. The idea is later reflected in both Zoro’s “nothing happened” moment during Thriller Bark, and in Luffy asking Momo to keep his role in defeating Kaido between those who took part in the battle.
How different are Zoro’s “nothing happened,” or Luffy asking not to tell Momo he is the one who defeated Kaido, from what an Oiran does? Or from the stories Usopp told to Kaya for that matter? Each serves the same function at the end of the day, a selfless performance put on for the sake of others.
I wouldn’t call Syrup Village one of my favorite arcs, though it certainly gets bashed on by parts of the fandom more than it deserves. There’s some great stuff in there!

I have a friend that has never played the games (They're very close to my heart, I forgive them this sin 😂) but they are really interested in watching Absolution. Do you have a basic run-down or know of a pre-existing post that would have the most important bullet points of the games to get the most out of the series? Appreciate your immense wealth of knowledge!! My wife and I intended on watching just the first 2 episodes and at the end all 6 were like.... that's it?! We need more 😭
hello! tysm and I know what you mean, more pls!! (๑*ᗜ*) that's a good question. the Dragon Age wiki has plot details/summaries of each of the games (DA:O, also DA:O, DAII, also DAII, DA:I, also DA:I). lots of YouTubers have done Lets Plays of the games over time. Ghil Dirthalen has a series of YouTube videos on Thedas lore here. in the one called "Nations of Thedas", the segment on Tevinter starts at timestamp 9 mins 30, and "A Brief-Complete History of Thedas" covers the history of the world. IGN did a "Dragon Age in 5 Minutes" video that covered the story so far/general broadstrokes lore up until before DA:I, Kotaku wrote a beginner's guide to all things Dragon Age article designed to help new players to DA:I who hadn't played DA2 and DA:O which could be useful, and The Kingdom has a series of 3 videos explaining the history of Tevinter (one, two, three). and to help get the most out of the series it might be helpful if they browsed the wiki pages on Tevinter, mages, blood magic and spirits/demons/possession.
I think the most important bullet points would be that:
the world is called Thedas and in it, being a mage often comes with a cost due to risk of demonic possession or perceived risk of this. because of this in most of the countries in the world mages are made to live in a system which is part of the main in-world religious organization, the Chantry, called the Circle, which keeps an eye on them and is policed by an order of knights called the Templars. however in one country, Tevinter, the country's government is made up of noble mages called Magisters, and it's effectively a magocracy. lots of bad things, dark magics and corrupt stuff goes on in Tevinter so it doesn't have a good reputation among the other nations
the Chantry religion is centered around a god called the Maker and his prophet, a human woman called Andraste
Tevinter has its own version of the Chantry, its own Chantry leader and its own Templars
Tevinter is a socially stratified society which has slavery
there are 4 races in the world, humans, elves, dwarves and Qunari (a tall horned people). elves are oppressed by humans who are the dominant race. in Tevinter elves are often enslaved. members of the other 3 races are also sometimes enslaved in Tevinter.
blood magic is a form of magic powered by blood (usually through sacrifice), it's very powerful but most people fear it and consider it to be evil. it's usually forbidden. it carries increased risk of possession. there's lots of blood magic stuff going on in Tevinter
a few years before the show begins, a corrupted ancient Tevinter magister from long ago basically came back to life and tore open part of the veil/barrier between the waking world and the magic dream world where spirits and demons live because he was A Bad Guy. this was called the Breach and demons from the other world poured through. a group of heroes got together and set up an organization with Chantry backing called The Inquisition. it was led by the Player Character from the most recent video game in the series. they could close mini-holes in the veil because of a magic mark on their hand. their title was the Inquisitor and some people thought they were chosen by Andraste so they called them The Herald of Andraste. many people joined the Inquisition to help. after closing the holes and saving the world, the Inquisition did some other stuff and then eventually disbanded.
I feel like those are the main things someone would need to know? (I tried to pare it down and put it into like, non-DA fan general fantasy terms)
I hope something here is helpful and that your friend enjoys the show ^^

STATISTICS.
Occupation: student ; petshop worker ; petshop owner ; toman captain (verse dep.)
Age: 13 ; 15 ; 25
Pronouns: he/him.
Sexuality: ???
ABOUT.
Past
Matsuno Chifuyu spent his time in middle school incredibly depressed after his father passed away. Nothing mattered and no one else in the world deserved his respect. He spent his days going through the motions at school, causing problems for teachers, and challenging other students who claimed to be awesome or strong. Chifuyu found himself getting into many fights. That was, until he met Baji Keisuke. Chifuyu met Keisuke as another person Chifuyu intended to challenge. However, he learned quickly Keisuke is someone he actually kind of liked. At first, he thought of Keisuke as a silly nerd despite his terrible case of illiteracy. That all changed when Keisuke rescued Chifuyu from a fight and revealed that he was the First Divison Captain of the Tokyo Manji gang.
Toman
The Tokyo Manji gang, also known as Toman, was a small biker gang featuring several middle schoolers who didn't have much better uses of their time. The group was founded on the premise of friends who would be willing to fight and die for each other. Initially, Chifuyu didn't care much for the gang and didn't hold the members in much esteem. The only reason he joined Toman was to get closer to Keisuke, his newly found idol, and become a better fighter. Chifuyu swore he would become Keisuke's Vice Captain to always be there to protect him.
Chifuyu is many things and determined is certainly one of them. Within a year, Chifuyu quickly rose to Keisuke's side and became his vice captain. They shared many memories. Some happy, some hurtful. All cherished. However, memories would soon be all they had after Keisuke's death on the battle referred to as, "Bloody Halloween." Chifuyu would be devastated and tasked with deciding the next First Division Captain. He chose Hanagaki Takemichi for Takemichi's moral code and support when helping Keisuke.
Toman's Future
Chifuyu and Takemichi became thick as thieves, and eventually Takemichi would share his secret with Chifuyu: Takemichi is a time traveller who has made it his mission to save the lives of those who die in the timeline from where he comes. Chifuyu agrees to help him and support him in their future endeavors.
Chifuyu's Future
Once Toman disbands, the members of the Toman gang are left to find their own separate paths. Chifuyu's mission in life is to carry on Keisuke's dreams. While Chifuyu's childhood dream was to become a pilot, he decides to work in a petshop part-time as he loves cats and Keisuke wanted to become a vet.
Bad Toman Timeline
In the Bad Toman timeline, Chifuyu remains a member of the Toman gang. He is one of Toman's executives and harbors a deeply-rooted grudge against Kisaki (the man who staged Keisuke's death). Chifuyu and Hanemiya Kazutora grow closer and work together to take down Kisaki, but it costs them greatly. It costs them Chifuyu's life.
Bonten Timeline
During the Bonten timeline, Chifuyu works as a petshop owner where he has hired Hanemiya Kazutora. Chifuyu seeks to provide Kazutora a purpose as a way to amend their relationship and turn a new leaf for both of them. While it's a rocky path, Chifuyu wants to be the stable beam of support Kazutora needs in his life to recover from prison.

── ✒️ About Sujin
Warnings: N/A
Sujin is the first born and only daughter of two parents. Her mother has a decent position working in a hotel, and her father has a typical office job. Thanks to this, Sujin grew up in a middle-class family and lived a very comfortable life.
As a child, she was always exceptionally brilliant, but she had no real ambitions growing up and did not enjoy school. She would often rebel against her parents by threatening not to apply to university and skipping cram school to hang out with friends. But besides this, Sujin had a fairly uninteresting (not traumatic) childhood, and her home life was relatively great compared to certain other members.
After passing her CSAT with flying colours, Su-Jin went to Yonsei University to study an undeclared degree. Being the extrovert she is, Su-Jin did not fail to make tons of friends and was thriving. The only thing holding her back was the actual university part. Su-Jin hated studying even more at this point, and with every passing day, it felt like there was more and more pressure from her parents to choose a career path.
On the way to one of her lectures, Sujin was abruptly stopped by a scouting manager who worked for MISSMUSE Entertainment. Despite refusing the offer and insisting that she couldn't sing or dance, she was still invited to audition at MME. She decided to go audition on a whim, but around one month later, she was invited to MME.
Originally, MME was casting trainees to add to GRLZ HIGH after the departure of two members, but Su-Jin was a new trainee, so she wasn't put in the running. She was, however, able to meet long-time trainee Aecha. Aecha was often training in a special group at completely different times because MME was planning to put her in GRLZ HIGH. Because of this, the two of them only saw each other in passing and were unable to get close. She also met Aina, who joined the company about a month after her. They both trained together and became close to the point where Sujin even began to learn Japanese despite her busy schedule.
MME never ended up adding new members to GRLZ HIGH, and they soon disbanded in Feb 2017. This resulted in many trainees either leaving or being referred out of the company. Only 5 trainees remained at MME, which included Ae-Cha, Aina, and Su-Jin. For Su-Jin, she decided to stay at SBE because, although she wasn't quite sure yet, she was growing to ‘enjoy’ trainee life and could actually start to see a career for herself in K-pop.
In 2018, MME announced that she was in the final lineup for an upcoming girl group. They did not explicitly tell Su-Jin to drop out, but the group was set to debut years before her graduation, so she made the executive decision to leave uni before starting her 3rd year. This caused a major fall out between her and her parents, who didn't even know she was a trainee until she dropped out. Her parents would then go on to cut all contact with her for around three months until her brothers managed to convince them otherwise.
In NOVELLA, Su-Jin's greatest insecurity has been her ‘lack of talent’. Compared to the other members who had developed their dance/vocal skills from early on in life, Su-Jin was very inexperienced and often felt that her own singing and dancing was letting the group down. Many antis of the group claim that she is ‘nothing but a pretty face’ and/or a ‘dozen’.

a family portrait of my mutants and masterminds character and her family, the Philips. more info under the cut about each member of the family
In the front is my character Delilah (Lady Marmalade). My slime girl, she defeated the primordial god of life and claimed their power and place as a god. But she’s content to live her life with her family. She is a former model who now is the CEO of her own cosmetics company. She is also the leader of the New Guard (or Guardians), the group that replaced/absorbed the Freedom League after it was disbanded after a huge scandal. She’s the adopted daughter of Langton Albright, and the child God(in a jesus sorta way). She also has her bio parent that she has a complicated relationship with, and and older brother (who’s in jail), and a younger brother.
On her right is her husband Lemar (Sonic)(canon M&M character). He has a side career as a musician, but is currently working as a gym teacher/simulation training instructor at Claremont Academy. We also found out his dad is Karkratos(head demon guy).
The baby my character is holding is her and Lemar’s youngest daughter Samantha. Samantha wasn’t born normally, but formed from the remains of the primordial god of magic after it was killed. It absorbed the DNA of the first person that touched it, which was Delilah. They gathered that the baby was still unstable, and needed to absorb the DNA of one more person to become stable. So Delilah had her absorb Lemar’s DNA (cuz she wasnt gonna have anyone else be the father of one of her children). Samantha is also unusually smart for a baby.
The other little girl is Lana, Delilah and Lemar’s oldest daughter. She’s the heir to the mantle of Master Mage, and inheritor of the violet phoenix. She keeps trying to do more than she is ready for and act like an adult, much to the dismay of her parent.
The boy on the far right is Miguel (Leapfrog)(modified canon M&M character). He’s the recently adopted son of the Philips. Apparently he has weird blood that people can use to gain his powers. Delilah and Lemar both love him a lot and think of him as their own son.
The boy on the left of Delilah is Franklin(named after the Black Avenger(canon M&M character)). He’s the eldest son of Delilah and Lemar. He’s working hard to live up to his namesake and his father’s legacy.
The boy in the middle is Jackson, he’s Franklin’s “twin”. As in, there was an event that caused some people from alternate versions of earth to end up on our earth. Jackson is actually an alternate version of Franklin. His life on his earth was bad, his parent entirely neglectful and absent, and extremely homophobic, Jackson is gay. So Delilah and him talked and he decided to stay on this earth, and changed his name to his middle name. They’ve been treating it like he’s Franklin’s twin to make things easier. He’s a troubled boy, but a sweetie that just needs some love.
And the elderly man in the back is Grandpa Jov. He is, to put it simply, God. In our mutants and masteminds worldstate a past player overthrew God and stole his throne. Casting him down to earth and stripping him of most of his power. He was living as a homeless person in Freedom City park until Delilah went to find him after meeting him in a dream/vision where you are met by your past relatives. Jov is the father of Delilah, in the same way he’s the father of Jesus. While they have biological, mortal parents, Jov played a personal role in bringing them into existence. He made Delilah as an improved version of the primordial god of life. Nowadays he’s living with the Philips at their mansion. (Delilah is thinking of how to get him his position as God back, especially since the current God, Alpha, is an asshole that cares more about waging war with hell than helping people)

Book Blurb: Yellowjackets meets She Is a Haunting in this debut speculative thriller that follows a disgraced teen idol who comes face-to-face with the demons of her past in a glittering, cutthroat K-pop competition. After a shocking scandal that abruptly ended her teen popstar career, eighteen-year-old Sunny Lee spends her days longing for her former life and cyberstalking her ex-BFF and groupmate, Candie. The two were once inseparable, but that was then—before the tragedy and heartache they left in their wake. In the here and now, Sunny is surprised to discover that Candie is attending a new K-pop workshop in her hometown. Candie might be there chasing stardom, but Sunny can’t resist the chance to join her and finally confront their traumatic history. Because she still can’t figure out what happened that horrible night when Mina, the third in their tight-knit trio, jumped to her death. Or if the dark and otherworldly secrets she and Candie were keeping had something to do with it . . . But the workshop doesn’t bring the answers Sunny had hoped for, nor a happy reunion with Candie. Instead, Sunny finds herself haunted by ghostly visions while strange injuries start happening to her competitors—followed by even stranger mutilations to their bodies. In her race to survive, Sunny will have to expose just who is behind the carnage—and if Candie is out for blood once more—in Linda Cheng’s spellbinding sapphic thriller that will have readers screaming and swooning for more.
Review:
Suspiria meets K-pop contest in this story about a disgraced teen idol who has to fast the demons of her past while reuniting with the girls who haunt her in a deadly K-pop competition. Sunday “Sunny” Lee is an 18 year old teen who spends her day in hiding and cyberstalking her ex-best friend and groupmate, Candie. Sunny is still reeling from the death of her other group mate and best friend Mina, and the events that unfurled that lead to her career being destroyed and their group disbanding. When Sunny discovers that Candie is going to be attending a new K-pop workshop in her own hometown she knows she has to enter too and to see Candie again. it doesn’t help that Sunny still see’s Mina’s ghost everywhere and the events of the past haunt her every living second, making her see ghostly visions... and the fact that competitors are being strangely injured one after another. Something darker is happening in this competition and Sunny knows that somehow Candie is connected to it.... but just how deep it goes will unravel everything and both Sunny and Candie will have to face each other after all these years and the reason their friendship and possibly something more, had broken... and see if they can depend on one another to survive this cut throat competition. This was a surprisingly delightful horror read, I loved the blending of past and present as we get to see how Sunny and Candie’s history unfolds, and how it slowly adds more and more to the tension that is currently happening in the present. They have a complex relationship and what happens in the past that really impacts the mysterious injuries of the present competition was a fun reveal. I would definitely recommend this for horror fans who enjoy some hauntings, some folklore, and a bit of sapphic romance!
*Thanks Netgalley and Macmillan Children's Publishing Group, Roaring Brook Press for sending me an arc in exchange for an honest review*

Kiernan, affectionately known as ‘AKA’, was arguably South Africa's greatest hip-hop artist of all time.
The first born of Tony and Lynn Forbes, his formative years were spent in his grandmother’s care in Mitchell’s Plain, Cape Town, Western Cape. He began his schooling at Holy Cross Convent, and then moved onto Greenside Primary School when he relocated to the bustling city of Johannesburg in the mid 1990s to live with his mother. His high schooling was done at the prestigious St Johns’s College, a private all-boys school nestled in the affluent suburb of Houghton Estate, Johannesburg. The school boasts former alumni such as former UJ Vice Chancellor & Principal, Prof. Tshilidzi Marwala; author Dr. Sizwe Mpofu-Walsh; former soccer star Kaizer Motaung Jr; presenter ‘Maps’ Maponyane; anti-apartheid activist & African Resistance Movement member, the late Hugh Levin; and disgraced former apartheid-era spy, Craig Williamson, to name a few.
It was while he was at St John’s, that he would form the musical group ‘Entity’, alongside Mpofu-Walsh and Nhlanhla Makenna. Originally, the group consisted of 6 members but they became a trio shortly afterwards. Their chosen stage names were: AKA (Forbes); Vice Versa (Mpofu-Walsh); and Greyhound (Makenna). Each member gave an explanation for their stage names. Forbes said his is derived from him being a different person to all the different people in his life; for Mpofu-Walsh, it’s double layered: firstly, it’s a pun on verse writing in the hip-hop tradition and secondly, it’s due to his mom being white and his dad being black, enabling him to see life from both side of the (racial) spectrum. For Makenna, he claims it stems from having big ears and a small frame as a kid and being able to run very fast.
The group would go on to release their only studio album in 2005, titled ‘Royal School of Hip Hop’. It’s worth noting that the group members were in grade 11. The album was independently released on Creative Kingdom Records and was produced by former Skwatta Kamo member, Siya ‘Slikour’ Metane. The album was well received and had one single on heavy rotation on radio and Channel O titled, ‘Touch And Go’. They were nominated in the Best Hip Hop Album category at the now-defunct KORA Awards and managed to perform at the awards ceremony. Sadly, the group disbanded after their matric year in 2006. According to Mpofu-Walsh, a second album was recorded but was never released.
Following the end of Entity, Forbes would go study sound engineering. It was while pursing his studies that he met with Ntokozo ‘Buks’ Mazibuko and Kamohelo ‘Kamza’ Mbatha, and formed the production team ‘IV League’. The three of them would fundamentally change the course of South African Hip Hop music and produce many hits such as ‘Tswakstikem’ by Khuli Chana, ‘Tla K'o Bone’ by Reason, ‘Monate So’ by Shugasmakx, "Victory Lap" by AKA (and the whole of his debut album Altar Ego) and ‘Bhampa’ by Pro, among others. Following this successful run, Forbes would leave the team and join up with Vth (pronounced fifth) Season. It would be his partnership with the indie label that he would see his greatest run of success and garner numerous international awards and have the distinction of being the only rapper to have a record go platinum without any vernac on it.
He dabbled in a few business ventures, such as the ill-fated BEAM Group, under which he released his third album, the double platinum ‘Touch My Blood’. He then landed a rare sneaker deal with international brand, Reebok. The SneAKA collaboration was well received and a limited edition run was sold out in no time. He then bagged a liquor collaboration with New York-based Cruz Vodka. The deal allowed him to have his own signature flavours, boasting the ever-popular Watermelon edition and the Banana edition.
As much as he was known for his musical talents, he was also known for his romantic relationships. His first significant relationship was with famed DJ Zinhle Jiyane, which spawned his only child, daughter Kairo Owethu Forbes, born 8 July 2015. He then had a whirlwind romance with iconic media personality and wine maker, Bonang Matheba. The relationship’s demise was widely discussed in the media and public with allegations of muti being used hurled around. He then got into a relationship with the late Anele Tembe, whom he got engaged to in February 2021. Sadly, Tembe would lose her life in an apparent suicide by jumping from the tenth floor of the Pepperclub Hotel in Cape Town. Numerous videos of the pair’s arguments made the rounds on social media and allegations of abuse were labelled against Forbes. The police cleared him of any involvement in Tembe’s untimely passing. He began a relationship with rapper Nadia Nakai in 2022.
Forbes was scheduled to perform at Yugo, a popular nightclub in Durban when he was gunned down by two unknown assailants. He and his former manager, Tebello ‘Tibz’ Motsoane were struck six times and died on the scene. Forbes is survived by his parents, younger brother Steffan and his girlfriend, Nakai.
He was laid to rest in a private burial on 18 Feb 2023 and is buried at the Westpark Cemetery in Johannesburg.

2022 Midyear Faves
Shaniqua
To say that 2022 has been tough on me is an understatement. It felt like a putting out a series of wildfires, each one springing to life immediately after the last one died, wreaking havoc on my health (physical and mental), self-esteem, relationships, and finances in turn. But in the middle of that mess, I managed to find some shining lights in the darkness to keep me, as we like to say, barely sane.
(Side note: I recently went through our archives on a whim, and can you believe BSR started in May 2014??? What a ride it has been.)
Music:
We've already revealed ourselves to be kpop fans, so there's no point hiding it now. Unfortunately, kpop was one of the major natural disasters in my life this year as my favorite group disbanded around my birthday. Maybe I'll finally post my kpop journey on here as a tribute to them, but in the meantime, here are the songs I've clung onto to fill the void.
fromis_9 - DM
I've managed to chop up this song into bits that basically narrate my life, from the opening soliloquy "Hey you, 지금 뭐해?", to the very cathartic "Doesn't matter~~~!" every chorus, to the release of energy in that whistle note towards the end. It's just an oddly comforting bop that I keep coming back to, and I'm happy to say that I fell in love with the girls' discography in the process. Stream Stay This Way!

(G)I-DLE - Tomboy
I've followed Soyeon since Produce 101 (the curse/blessing that got me into kpop) and have stanned (G)I-DLE since their debut. I gotta say - Tomboy is a masterpiece. The way they came back with a shot heard around the world after losing a member and a year of solo activities is the cheffiest kiss. (6)I-DLE forever.

Honorable Mentions: VIVIZ - Loveade; Le Sserafim - Fearless; Taeyeon - INVU; and of course, NU'EST - Again
Film:
Love and Leashes (2022)
Though I watched last year's Let Me Be Your Knight for my bias, my favorite discovery of 2021 was Lee Junyoung. His character Taein was so endearing and charming, but a bit too similar to his previous roles. When I heard he was going to star alongside SNSD's Seohyun in a movie about BDSM, I had no idea what to expect. What I got instead was a weirdly sweet and loving film about two people learning to trust each other as they navigate their own preferences and desires. So excited for what he's going to do next, with or without barking.

Honorable Mentions: Turning Red, Minari
TV:
Do we still call it TV if we don't watch it on a TV?
Strangers From Hell
I actually watched more kdramas this year than I usually do to fill the void that Nu'est left behind, so I got to watch some of the more popular ones as they aired. But what can I say, I'll always be a sucker for a good dark kdrama. This one features one of my faves, Im Siwan, as he slowly goes insane from living in a rundown goshiwon whose inhabitants may or may not be murderers.

Pretty Proofreader
One thing I love about jdramas is that they can make anything - from an underrated sport to an overlooked profession - sound rewarding and exciting, and this charming little story about a wannabe fashion editor who gets assigned to the proofreading department of her favorite magazine is no different. As a fellow optimist, I felt so represented by Etsuko. Satomi Ishihara's extra outfits paired with her uplifting smile got me through Covid.

Honorable Mentions: My Liberation Notes, A Business Proposal, Spy x Family, Alchemy of Souls (ongoing)
Colleen
I watched a lot of TV shows the first half of the year because ya girl was unemployed for a while. Here are my top 5 picks and some honorable mentions.
TV:
Our Beloved Summer
Tumblr media
I don't know why, but I got so obsessed with this show. Choi Woo Shik and Kim Da Mi had so much chemistry, and their characters just drew me in. The show is about two high school students--the top student (Yeon Su, played by Da Mi) and the bottom-ranking student (Ung, played by Woo Shik)--who are put together for a documentary. After getting to know each other while shooting the documentary, they fall in love and date for years. They eventually break up but are forced to reunite to do a sequel to the documentary, this time documenting their lives as adults. There was just something about the way the story was written, how well Woo Shik and Da Mi played the characters, and the summer vibe and visuals of the show. It just sucked me in. I rewatched scenes a million times and even did an ugly drawing inspired by a scene in the show. I look forward to seeing these two work together again.
My Liberation Notes
Tumblr media
I love a kdrama that follows a group of characters and really digs deep into each one. You would think that the romance in this would be highlighted more than the character arcs (because kdrama), but the show balanced the romance and the characters' growth really well. There were several moments in this show where I saw myself in the characters and it also made bold story choices. I knew this would be good because the show's writer, Park Hae Young, also wrote My Mister which I also really liked.
Film:
Moonlit Winter
Tumblr media
I found out about this film on IG, where I saw that Kim So Hye (of Produce 101 fame) starred in a film a few years back. I liked the aesthetics of this film, the slow pace, the quiet affection between the characters. It had the same vibe as Little Forest, and it also had that mother-daughter journey from miscommunication to friendship. The mother's story is heartbreaking and is not often told, and I liked how the film subtly subverted narrative tropes and let her story of yearning overflow.
Strawberry Shortcakes
Tumblr media
This one's a rewatch. I saw it years ago, and although I forgot about the title and most of the story, I found it interesting how I still remembered a few parts of it even years after. I decided to rewatch it this year to refresh my memory and see why the film stuck with me. Strawberry Shortcakes shows the inner lives of four Japanese women: a sex worker who sleeps in a coffin and has a singular obsession with a man she knows from high school; a stone-worshipping assistant whose innocence sticks out in a workplace that sells sex; a sleep-deprived, solitary artist struggling to succeed in a money-driven industry; and an office worker who's looking for love. It's rare to see a story that revolves around a group of women who live complex lives, and the film also makes notable choices in cinematography.

The Soulmate Equation
Romance novels are perfect for me right now: not too deep, but enough to make me feel things and escape life. This one is really cute and has an interesting premise: Jess, a single mom and statistics expert, gets matched with River Peña, the cold-hearted creator of a dating app called GeneticAlly, which matches people based on their DNA compatibility. If you're looking for a lighthearted romance read, check this out.
