I love the Copia Caligula theory but yall are sleeping on the fact that there's so many parallels between him and Nero. They both got mothers that stop at "nothing" to ensure they're at the top, even going so far as to kill their half brothers

thanks for answering my question! Whenever you have more time for requests for Domina can you do the outfits of the kids generation like Marcella, Antonina, Antonia, Vipsania and Julia and maybe some of the guys too? Thank you!! :)
Sure. I still have an outstanding request from season 01 about Marcella and Antonia anyway, so I will combine these. I already did Julia's from the first season btw.

“Boys, workin' on empty
Is that the kinda way to face the burning heat?
I just think about my baby
I'm so full of love I could barely eat
There's nothing sweeter than my baby
I'd never want once from the cherry tree
'Cause my baby's sweet as can be
She give me toothaches just from kissin' me.”
- Work Song // Hozier
Caecilia Snow can hardly stomach what she is about to witness. Her oldest sister, Iovita, stands stoned faced behind her. One of her svelte hands clasped around her left shoulder. A mask, she’s sure. Vita always did have troubles with expressing her emotions. The middle sister, Agrippina, is a complicated mix of both. Her hand is warmer on Caecilia’s right shoulder, but the blisters make it uncomfortable. Cato, the steadfast and tough oldest son, does not look at all. One can only wonder how he felt about that tribute from two, poor souls. Little Ignacius (she will always see him as such even though he's grown a head taller than her) brow is furrowed so terribly, she fears it might get stuck.
And strange Silvanus, the second son, he isn’t even on the balcony with his beloved siblings. Perhaps he is lost in his thoughts again. He wonders now if when his father smells the wood of the gallows, he thinks of a forest out in twelve that he haunted decades ago. The handkercheif he uses to hastily wipe his tears before he can gather the courage to join his family possess drops of blood every time he pulls it away. From his nose or drug up from his lungs, who can say? The wall outside the library his father had made especially for their mother on their wedding anniversary takes several blows from his aching clenched fist. So much blood, like father like son. Silvanus feels comforted by the persistent thought.
Ignacius eyes his brother with open concern as he saunters into view beside him. He barely manages to hide his wobble and his rush to stuff a stained cloth into his pocket does nothing to ease Ignacius’s worries. Silvanus has been one of the more sensitive ones in their parade, though that has never meant that he has not fought for his family. It is because of that that when Silvanus relents to the beseeching stare of his younger brother, Ignacius nods with utmost determination. The second son softens minutely and eventually returns it.
“Snow lands on top.” Six voices whisper in chorus.
Somewhere in an alabaster mausoleum, resides an ornate urn containing what would have been a seventh voice.
Tumblr media
At the end of it all, President Coriolanus Snow smiles and he laughs with his entire chest like you’ve told him your funniest joke. Blood pours from his mouth like hot wax. His forked tongue doggy paddles in the little sea of crimson. A weathered hand with hard to spot cracks in the skin and light purple spots clasps itself firmly around the rose pinned to his suit. The wind seems to circle around Coriolanus Snow and he heaves a hearty chuckle when it ruffles through his hair. You’re with him even now as the foundations of your dynasty crumble and scatter over a stormy cliffside. A most welcomed and yearned for torment. His dearest specter.
Finally.
It seems even a Mockingjay’s tiny brain can manage.
It brings to mind the memory of another unfortunate like her. An Angel of Death from 11, tall and hunkered over. A flag being ripped from its rightful place and being pulled over rotting corpses. They were laid so closely together, they might as well have been a pack of sardines. There was ample meaning in his rustic burial, and there were snakes that suffocated it in their multicolored den. A precious rainbow after a great flood.
He’s not the only boy she reminds him of, but he’s unable to recall the second one’s name. A ghost that hovers on the edge of his mind.
Nevermind how useless her brief moment of assumed triumph will be. The games may be locked in a box in the minds of Panem and shoved away so they can be blissfully ignorant, but there will always be those in favor of them. What they represent will remain just as their purpose will prove itself once again when the people are governed by the rabid cannibals that ate them. Dogs can’t be trusted to be left to their own devices and off their leashes. Such deranged creatures were far better suited for being submerged in the violence of their own making.
Panem today. Panem tomorrow. Panem forever.
The soft dulcet tones of silenced voices ring out, something he once knew about a man who murdered three. The white fog fades away and Coriolanus wakes with a muffled shout to find himself in a raggedy bunk in an all too familiar building. his hands tremble but they look no different. with a disbelieving laugh he realizes that nothing has changed yet, that he has been rewarded for decades of dedication and devotion to Panem. That his herculean task others once thought of as sisyphean had been irrevocably realized.
3 daughters, 3 sons. Countless grandchildren. A legacy that will no doubt be remembered no matter the connotations associated with it.
Coryo’s heart is thundering like it did back then on that fateful day, and it does not slow by the time he’s shoved his things into a sack and hidden in the back of a truck. He could sway from the dizziness of deja vu. The truck soon comes to a stop and he clamors out of it, jumping out and racing however many yards he has to until he can spot his heart doing a terrible job of hiding behind a pillar. Anyone with a working set of eyes could discern the scarlet edges of your skirt swishing from side to side. They would have an unchallenging time seeing you suppress the urge to pick at the skin around your nails.
For the first time in over a year, Coriolanus Snow is utterly consumed by the urge to burst into tears. His beautiful beautiful dryad. The blood red dress he had ran himself ragged to buy clung to you like a lover as you twirled around nervously looking for him. Never in his life had a decision been so easy, so with a grateful chuckle and an embarrassingly giddy grin he bounds over to you. The light splintered through the trees nearby, the way it raked through your eyes and made them sparkle brought him fantastic grief. To him, they have never once lost that illustrious shine.
“I thought you’d never show up, Coryo. I was startin’ to worry a bit.”
Your hand feels like a delicious brand when it slips into his, impossibly soft and his cock throbs in his pants at the countless memories it elicits. In an apparent recreation of Pygmalion gazing upon the stone turned flesh form of Galatea, his love spills from him like a reopened wound. his Aphrodite on earth, his goddess with a never-ending number of rose petals in her hair.
“Not even a bullet in my back could keep me from you, dove.”
A garter snake slithers by between the two of you and before you can notice, Coryo swiftly crushes its head under the heel of his boot. The forest is blessedly silent. His world is kept from cleaving in two by the invisible string you’ve looped around his neck.
The putrid smell of the woods around you forces you to attempt to hide yourself gagging behind your hand. His lips twitch but he suppresses the urge to smile in that smug but infuriatingly hot way he knows you secretly love.
You’d better make quick work of getting over the mountains, you’re pregnant after all.
a/n: I’m sick and on bed rest (the cold is kicking my immune system’s ass) so wip progress has stopped but I had this in the drafts. call me Suzanne Collins because I tried with the naming symbolism. Please reblog if you liked it and yell at me about him if you want <3

Who of the many women that surrounded Mark Antony could you see yourself being FRIENDS with? Not who you admire the most but who you'd enjoy drinks and dishing the dirt with the most
It's honestly kind of hilarious how the "Julio-Claudian" Dynasty is really a bunch of Antonians. Over half of the emperors and most of the influential women of the family are all Antonians

Roman Coin - Gold Aureus of Nero C. AD 64-65
Obverse: portrait of Nero, NEO CAESAR AUGUSTUS. Reverse: The Temple of Janus, the Roman god of beginnings and endings. Traditionally, the temple was open during times of war and closed when peace was restored. Nero celebrates this rare occurrence by depicting the temple with closed doors.
Nero Claudius Caesar Augustus Germanicus (15 December AD 37 – 9 June AD 68) was the fifth Roman emperor and final emperor of the Julio-Claudian dynasty, reigning from AD 54 until his death in AD 68.
Nero was born at Antium in AD 37, the son of Gnaeus Domitius Ahenobarbus and Agrippina the Younger, a great-granddaughter of the emperor Augustus. When Nero was two, his father died. His mother married the emperor Claudius, who adopted Nero as his heir. When Claudius died in AD 54, Nero became emperor with the support of the Praetorian Guard and Senate. In the early years of his reign, Nero was advised and guided by his mother Agrippina, his tutor Seneca the Younger, and his praetorian prefect Sextus Afranius Burrus, but soon sought to rule independently and rid himself of restraining influences. His power struggle with his mother was eventually resolved when he had her murdered. Roman sources implicate Nero in the deaths of both his wife Claudia Octavia – supposedly so he could marry Poppaea Sabina – and his step brother Britannicus.
During Nero's reign, the general Corbulo fought the Roman–Parthian War of 58–63, and made peace with the hostile Parthian Empire. The Roman general Suetonius Paulinus quashed a major revolt in Britain led by queen Boudica. The Bosporan Kingdom was briefly annexed to the empire, and the First Jewish–Roman War began. When the Roman senator Vindex rebelled, with support from the eventual Roman emperor Galba, Nero was declared a public enemy and condemned to death in absentia. He fled Rome, and on 9 June AD 68 committed suicide. His death sparked a brief period of civil war known as the Year of the Four Emperors.

Opinion on Domina season 2?
Wow thank you SO much for the ask.
I watched Domina season 2 during August so forgive me if my memory isn't perfect. Spoilers!
I feel like this season is much more funny but also much more heartbreaking than the first season. However, I feel like the first season was much more tense than this season. So basically when I was watching the first season I was constantly gritting my teeth and pulling at my hair and when I was watching the second season I was constantly alternating between laughing and crying. Which isn't a bad thing, but I think the majority of the tension in this season was me wondering how they would break my heart again, not from the plot.
Well I guess I should just jump right in.
Some Random Thoughts I Had:
In this season, two of the three characters I was watching this show for died. Luckily the third character isn't due to die for another fifty years or so! I don't have to worry about him dying. I only have to worry about him as a person.
Wouldn't it be crazy rad if Domina just kept continuing, past Livia's life, into the later Julio-Claudian dynasty? And we get to see Agrippina and Nero and Britannicus and Claudius? Ah, that would just be amazing! But it would kind of go against Domina, which is supposed to be a show about Livia's life. At least Livia still has a lot of life to live! I don't know if there's a third season coming. I hope so.
Tiberius got a new actor! But Drusus didn't. Livia actually mentioned this and it was so funny but so weird. She was like "Oh, Tiberius, you changed a lot! But Drusus hardly changed at all!" which feels so uncomfortable to me because Tiberius got a new actor but Drusus didn't and all the viewers know that but we're supposed to pretend like we don't to suspend our disbelief but when the characters themselves mention it ahhh!
On that note, Drusus, his age, and how that's all depicted in Domina is a super weird topic that I just don't have the time to talk about here.
I love Tiberius' new actor so so so much and he feels like Tiberius, but I also miss the old actor! Ah, that's what rewatching the first season is for!
Antigone is gone. It's implied she died in between the first season and the second but we don't get much information about that so it feels like she just vanished into thin air. I miss her ;(
There is so much Tiberius Pillow symbology in this season. They are rubbing it in your face.
Okay now that I'm done with that brain dump, let's review it with more structured topics!
Acting:
Amazing as always. I actually think the acting here was better than in the last season. Honestly the way these people play with their facial expressions like that... oh my gosh it's so good. Domina has phenomenal acting.
However, there are two little moments when I cringed, but they are 100% not the actors' faults. One of them I already mentioned, when Livia mentioned that Tiberius changed a lot and Drusus didn't. That was really funny but just so weird.
And then when a character mentioned that wearing trousers was weird and not fashionable. It's just that all the actors are so British, a line like that is impossible to pull off and sound right. They're all just too British!
But honestly the acting was so so good in this season!
Overall Beauty:
Domina is continuing to be absolutely beautiful. Every screenshot is a work of art. Domina is easily one of the prettiest shows out there.
Plot:
I think it was good. There were some parts that just felt very very random but overall I think the plot was very entertaining and heartbreaking and not historically inaccurate in the way that I'd dislike it, but historically inaccurate in the way good historical fiction is.
Humor:
Amazing as always. This show is so funny. Quickly alternating between two different things is quite a common theme in this season, so they use a lot of heartbreak but also a lot of humor.
Characters:
My favourite character always is and always was Tiberius, even though I don't really think he was created as a character for people to like. Tiberius... he's very very complicated in this show and I don't think I have the brain power to talk about it. But I've liked him ever since we first met him as a teenager in the first season because he's autistic-coded and I was like "Omg he's just like me fr." And then of course I had to like him for the rest of the show. But just because I like him as a character does not mean I like him as a person or condone anything he does.
Dang I wanted to say something more solid in this section but I just can't think of anything.
Anyway, when it comes to the characters as a whole, I think that generally they were all done very well. Vipsania was kind of done dirty, but other than that, I'd say everyone has a strong personality and I never found an issue with the characterization.
Things I Liked:
Honestly, everything I mentioned up there. Acting, humor, prettiness, sadness. I like 99% of this show.
That part when Augustus was getting kinky with Gemina while Agrippa was telling the senate about being more loyal and moral and that sort of stuff. Ohhh that was so clever.
When Tiberius was remembering the dream he had about his father and repeating all the words his father said and it was like Tiberius was becoming him. Ahhhhhh.
This hilarious part after Tiberius and Julia's wedding:
Antonina: Drusus. Did you give Vistilius permission to fornicate in our bedroom?
Drusus: Yes!
Antonina: 🤨
Drusus: No?
Antonina: 😬
Drusus: Possibly. Who can remember?
Antonina: 😟
Oh my god the way Drusus was just cycling through every response!
Antonina and Drusus stole the show they were amazing.
Things I Did Not Like:
They're trying to show Tiberius' mental health issues but I am not 100% agreeing with how they do it. But I don't really know how it could be better. And I'm just not very knowledgeable in this subject so maybe their depiction is actually really good. I don't know. It's just that I think it could be better in some way.
I wanted more Vipsania. And they were so mean in their portrayal of her.
When Agrippa died 😭😭😭😭😭 and Octavian was all sad about it 😭😭😭😭😭 but then Octavian and Livia were suddenly having sex and Livia was saying "Oh, it's okay, you don't need him anymore." 😟😟😟😟😟😟😟 Oh my god, what? I was literally crying but then that scene made my tears go back up to where they came from.
During Tiberius and Julia's wedding, what was simultaneously happening to Livia just felt so random and disconnected to everything else that was happening. Which is a shame because Tiberius and Julia's wedding was honestly my favourite part of the whole show. I remember that it kept jumping back and forth between the wedding and Livia. Watching it kind of felt like "Omg omg I feel so bad for Tiberius and Julia—who are those people in the masks chasing Livia?? Oh dang Drusus you're going to gamble everything away—why is Livia jumping off a cliff??" I know that part with Livia probably had a purpose in the show, but I actually forgot what it was.
In Conclusion:
The second season of Domina was funny, heartbreaking, pretty, and I loved it. It made some decisions I did not like, but it also made a whole lot of decisions I loved. Overall, I absolutely love this show. This is actually my favourite TV show of all time.
But the big question is, which season is better?
I don't know! They both have their strengths and weaknesses.
The first season has Antigone and Marcellus and just a lot of the "children" of the imperial family when they were teenagers, you know, Julia, Tiberius, Drusus, Marcellus, Iullus. And I like that a lot. In the second season, they're older, which is perfectly fine but I like teenager drama, you know?
The first season had two awkward episodes in the beginning where they had to pretty much explain all the context and characters, but they honestly weren't bad episodes. They were just really different compared to most of the show. However, because a lot of actors got changed in between the second episode and the third, it was quite confusing for a while. The very second I'm finally able to recognize most of the characters, bam, they all look different. Which is bad because I'm quite face blind!
Anyway, the first season really had me on the edge of my seat, especially for the last four episodes. But I think I felt even more suspense watching the second season wondering how they were going to break my heart again.
I think the second season was funnier but humor does not necessarily make or break a show, unless it's a comedy. And just because the second season was funnier doesn't mean the first season doesn't have its own fair share of hilarious moments, and it does!
Both seasons are very very beautiful and have great acting. The choice of actors is honestly phenomenal for both seasons.
Honestly, I don't know which season is better! In my opinion, Domina managed to do the rare thing in which the second season manages to live up to the first. But not everyone might agree with me. If you have anything to add, please do!

hello there! i just wanted to ask, why you accepted that one anons request of adding ceyx in as a ro? the fact hes your step brother is...very concerning, but im willing to hear your reasoning.
I've gotten a lot of hate for this decision before so I'm going to try to explain myself as best I can here. This post is going to be long even without revealing in-game spoilers, so bear with me.
I first want to clarify that it was actually several people that requested Cexy be a love interest; y'all just didn't see every post at the time. He's a very popular character - in fact I think he's the most popular of all the romance options at this point - and a major part of the plot revolves around him, so it makes sense to have him be an RO for people who want major angst. His route is filled with angst.
I've also clarified before that Ceyx and the MC share no familial DNA whatsoever. The only thing that makes them "relatives" is a political marriage between Ceyx's mother and MC's father, who (SPOILER!) actually can't stand each other. In fact, historically speaking, several famous couples have had much closer familial ties to each other, from Queen Victoria marrying her first cousin Prince Albert to King Tut who was wed to his half-sister Ankhesenamun. Even Henry VIII of England encouraged a match between his eldest daughter Mary and his illegitimate son Henry FitzRoy, though this never happened. And don't get me started on the Spanish Habsburg dynasty.
At the time this game takes place, the Emperor of Rome is Nero, who's mother Agrippina the Younger had married her uncle, the previous Emperor Claudius. Such matches would not have been unusual back then and while there would have been gossip, nobody would have been scandalized. This is a historic fantasy, after all, so I have a lot of wiggle room even while keeping everything as true to history as I can.
I'm also going to reiterate that there will be an option at the start of the game to disable the romance with Ceyx and keep things platonic so nobody will be triggered.

I’ve been thinking about two things in regards to Ms Agrippina Major and Tiberius and I’d like to go on a small tangent:
If Tiberius hated being emperor so much why didn’t he just abdicate to Nero? like it was clear basically until the end that Germanicus’ eldest was the intended successor not Sejanus; Nero was well liked and mannered, plus he was married to Tiberius’ granddaughter so it was very much in the family. the senate and the people would have preferred Nero and Tiberius could have retired happily to whatever end of the empire he wanted to have the peace he clearly longed for
Also just logically (though I understand why they both didn’t) it would have made a lot of political sense for Agrippina and Tiberius to have married after Drusus’ death. like it would have been a huge popularity boost for Tiberius and it would have given Agrippina a lot of piece of mind about her sons’ place in line of succession. she could have been empress like she and literally everyone wanted and Tiberius was basically away in Capri at that point so they could have tolerated each other at a distance. again I understand why they both would have refused but I truly believe some advisor suggested the marriage

Happy Worldbuilding Wednesday! I have two questions that are tangentially related:
Your story is Italian inspired, but do the inspirations vary, even slightly, depending on the territory?
Is there a reason rooted in worldbuilding for why some characters have Latin names (Julia, Cloelia) and others Italian names (Enrico, Niccolò)? Are there naming conventions for different places (kingdoms, cities, etc.) or based on status?
Hi! Happy WBW!
So, the main culture in the story (Circi) is based about half on the Ancient Romans, and half on Renaissance Italy (and I threw in some nods to the region where my family’s from—the capital city is Aquila)
The cultures surrounding it are based around some of Rome’s neighbors. Bellamagna is Persian with some Spartan influences, Vinoseta is the rich Ancient Greek cities, Candemero is Gaul/Roman Britain. (I want to add a Carthaginian based civilization at some point because Punic Wars my beloved).
And the names—character names are one of my favorite subjects, so there’s a long tangent incoming.
My first priority when naming major characters is that their name means something. So, I pay more attention to meaning than to origin. Cloelia is named for the woman in Roman legend, who escaped from being an Etruscan hostage.
The entire Corvi family is named for a different Italian historical figure—Niccolo (Machiavelli), Livia (Drusilla, the wife of Augustus), Julia (Augustus’ daughter, also Julia Domna, a prominent empress in the later empire), Cesare (Borgia), Rodrigo (Borgia), Agrippina (the mother of Nero), and Calpurnia (Caesar’s wife).
Names that aren’t meant to evoke a specific person are usually designed to mean something—Enrico Accursio translates roughly to “cursed home-rule”, Giacomo Gallo is “sidekick to the proud one”
Naming conventions—In South Circi (the villain’s territory), the nobility all have a last name with the style di or d’. Because the head of each noble family has a little province of land, that on the surface they govern but really they’re just someone Basilio can blame when something goes wrong. So, Novellia de Rege’s family is from Rege, Saturnino d’Ovidio’s family is from Ovidio, and so on.

ACOB couples historical counterparts:
Viserys/Laena:
I think they would sort of be the same as Viserys and Alicent’s canon relationship. However there would be some notable differences. Laena grew up expecting to make an important match as the only daughter of the richest house in the realm. She also sees her majority as an opportunity to avenge her mother being passed up during the Great Council. So I think she’d assert her authority more as Queen Consort than Alicent ever did. Laena will also have close family members (her parents, brother, cousins, etc.) she can rely on besides just Ser Criston and would have an easier time navigating the court and dealing with nobles. Alicent, no matter what Viserys did, continued to personally care for him. I don’t really see her playing the role of nursemaid. Depending on how bad things get, Laena would probably become more bitter and resentful. However, for the sake of appearances, I think shed play up the role of the doting wife in public but behind closed doors her marriage is completely broken. It was doomed to fail. Laena probably expected Viserys to grow to care for her without realizing exactly how much he misses Aemma.
Aemond/Aemma as Francis/Mary:
After their betrothal was arranged, Mary had to go live with Francis’s family in France for purely political reasons. They were practically raised together and grew up together. Reportedly had an affection and happy relationship and developed a strong friendship. Their relationship was cut short by Francis’s death.
Aemma is incredibly young when she goes to live on the stepstones. From the headcanons you gave, I can really see her forming a good friendship with Aemond that’ll act as the basis of their future relationship. Since Aemma is only 15 when the dance starts and Aemond will definitely want to be involved, the dance will be what inevitably cuts their relationship short.
Daeron/Helaena as Franz & Sissi (but happier):
Franz & Sissi had a very whirlwind romance and he was practically obsessed with her. However, the court life of Austria was incredibly taxing/restricting on Sissi and contributed to her mental health issues (anxiety, eating disorders, etc.) and Franz had to focus on his royal responsibilities. Sissi was incredibly popular with the people, considered a great beauty, and had a great love for Hungary and often escaped there. The people at court in Austria thought she was odd but the people in Hungary adored her.
Daeron and Helaena are very much in love. However, they aren’t super high up in the line of the succession so I think the idea of them escaping to Oldtown and living there makes sense. It’s way less restricting than court and being involved in the warring factions. It gives them both the space and freedom to grow into themselves and just live their lives. I think they would both thrive there and be loved by the people of Oldtown. Also, I just think Helaena and Sissi have a lot of parallels while I imagine Daeron pretty much the same as in canon (charming, likable, brilliant strategist)
Lucerys/Saera as Germanicus and Agrippina the Elder:
Saera: Germanicus and Agrippina They were literally the “it couple” of Rome at the time. Despite being a politically arranged match, they genuinely came to care and love for one another. They both came from (the same) influential, wealthy, and politically important family. Germanicus was considered the future of Rome and was a brilliant general. Agrippina upheld the image of a loyal and fertile wife. They had lots of kids and she traveled by his side on all his campaigns. Luke is very much the future of House Velaryon after his father’s sudden death which works out well with his own personal ambitions to further his house. Mixing mine and the other head-canons that were posted earlier, I think their relationship would start out with Luke flirting with Saera to piss of Daemon, over the years he genuinely begins to like her but would never admit it, Daemon doesn’t care and uses the opportunity to arrange his daughter to become the lady of Driftmark, and Saera latches onto the idea because 1) Luke is wealthy, handsome, and kind and 2) it’ll give her the chance to get away from her dad. I can totally see Saera pouring her energy into supporting her husband’s ambitions and even going on Luke’s voyages/expeditions with him (shocking everyone). Luke genuinely loves her and (unlike his grandfather) stays completely faithful to her. They are the it couple of Westeros

What is your personal top ten/ranking of Ancient Roman movies/TV shows? So, the major Ancient Roman audiovisual products seem to be Gladiator, I Claudius, HBO Rome, the Taylor Cleopatra movie, Spartacus and perhaps the (Wonderful!) Domina? There is also the Matheson Nero movie, the O'Toole Augustus, The Caesars series that were relessed not long before Claudius and some Shakespeare Caesar adaptations (I also like the Chaning Tatum Eagle movie, wonderful gay cinema if u ask me, though Jamie beats Chaning in hotness).
I have never watched the Eagle movie, can you believe? Horrible oversight from my part and one I should fix. But I did watch the other ones you mentioned, so I guess I can try a top 10, or rather, just 10 of my favorites, because hell how could I even rank works so different in terms of personal enjoyment, historical accuracy, overall quality etc? And how can I in good faith put Caligula (1979) along with oscar winner Gladiator? When Caligula is so much better than it...
Rome HBO was a turning point and it's very important to me, personally. I watched it for the first time in one of the worst years of my life and it just clicked, so it will always be special. And it's just great! Very well made, very distinctive in tone and look, with one of the best casts in anything ever. The writing sometimes stumbles, but when it's good it's one of the best.
Liz Taylor Cleopatra for reasons very similar to above. Just very important to me on a personal level. I also love big historical epics that are a thousand hours long and you can just lose yourself in them. The big settings, the gorgeous outfits, the drama. And the behind the scenes gossip from this one makes it better. Type of movie you watch and go "you can tell the leads were fucking" (best type).
Gladiator. Again, in terms of ridiculous, over the top, big historical epics that are a thousand hours long. It's gorgeous! And Commodus and Lucilla are two characters that are very dear to me, so I have to sneak it in here.
National Theatre 2018 production of Antony and Cleopatra with Ralph Fiennes and Sophie Okonedo. Because it's Sophie Okonedo as Shakespeare's Cleopatra.
Starz Spartacus. Maybe this one is begging for a rewatch? Because it's been some time. But I remember finding it entertaining and often poignant. Shows the horrors of slavery without being "gratuitous" (I do have a problem with the term but let's use it here). And the characters are just so good! Crixus and Naevia! Lucretia and Illithyia! I think it's the precursor to Black Sails in a lot of ways, if you have watched that.
I am going to mention Caligula 1979. It's good TO ME. If they don't release the new cut soon I'll kms.
Domina, of course. I have very fond memories of waiting for it and being super excited (never thought we would get a tv show about Livia!!) and it mostly lived up to the expectations. It's not perfect but it's funny and dramatic and it's just so nice to see all the Julio-Claudian kids... One thing I love about it is that while other tv shows very reasonably cut some historical figures to make things neater, Domina just has EVERYONE in it. And they all marry each other multiple times. So it's a lot of fun to point and go "look! it's livilla!".
I, Claudius... I have a love/hate relationship with it, I think the BBC 70s production value is cursed and the sexism is so wild it makes me laugh (and my tolerance is usually very high!) but the cast is just surreal (Derek Jacobi gives one of the best tv performances EVER in it) and like in Domina it's just nice to see everyone...
Julius Caesar 1953 because Jason Mason as Brutus and Deborah Kerr as Portia.
Will round this up with Imperium: Augustus and Imperium: Nero as a joint bullet point because I'm cheating :) if I'm honest the Nero one has the edge because I just love love love love their Agrippina and Nero, one of my favorite mother/son relationships in anything... But Peter O'Toole and Charlotte Rampling as Augustus and Livia? No I can't leave it out. And the Augustus/Julia relationship is almost as delicious as the Agrippina/Nero one. Also it's very gay! Augustus was very much in love with Agrippa in that one!
Honorable mentions to Cleopatra 1934, delicious pre-code stuff; the Timothy Dalton Antony and Cleopatra because Timothy Dalton is hot as Antony; IL PRIMO RE!!!!! If you haven't watched that, DO; Hannibal with Alexander Siddig which I didn't include because technically is a documentary; Royal Diaries - Cleopatra??? Because baby Cleopatra.....
