Fushi no Hana (An Immortal Flower), Yukiko Kai, 1979
The ‘Fabulous Year 24 Group’ and the shōjo manga revolution
The Year 24 Group’s name refers to the 24th year of the Showa era (1949), which approximates the birth dates of the young women pioneers. It wasn’t a title that its members gave themselves and nor were they a coherent group: according to the translator Matt Thorn, the term includes anyone who contributed to the shōjo manga revolution. But Moto Hagio, Keiko Takemiya and Yumiko Oshima are always acknowledged as among the movement’s most significant artists. Born in the aftermath of the Second World War, these women grew up against the backdrop of the global youth counterculture of the 1960s and sought to transform manga into a new form of self-expression for women.
Tumblr media
Cover for Nemuki magazine, Akiko Hatsu, 2001
The decorative illustrations and dreamy jojōga (lyrical pictures) that had been developing in girls’ magazines since the 1920s also influenced manga. The art nouveau- and art deco-inspired fashion drawings of Jun’ichi Nakahara, with their elongated limbs and huge, long-lashed, doll-like eyes, were popular with teenage girls (Nakahara was also an amateur doll-maker). According to Thorn, when Yoshiko Nishitani wrote some of the first boy-girl school romances in the mid-1960s, she drew her characters in this style, which quickly became the convention.
The manga historian Yukari Fujimoto writes that the exaggerated twinkling eye (which expresses emotion and encourages reader identification) was popularised by Macoto Takahashi in the early shōjo manga of the 1950s. Also inspired by Nakahara’s lyrical illustrations, he drew his characters with huge eyes and filled them with glittering stars. Others have attributed the exaggerated eye to Tezuka, who produced the first long shōjo manga, Princess Knight in 1953. Many Western writers assume that he was influenced by Disney, but Tezuka himself said that he was inspired by the eye make-up of the Takarazuka Revue performers, who were based in his hometown.

School Report #1
Tumblr media
Nobuyuki Atari speaking, and this will be the School Report File #1. This is the second day of our school life inside of the S.S. Sharomuzu Hell, as the bear who holds us hostages, Monokuma, named it. It's a spacious cruise ship, but for now, we only have access to a part of the ship; the rest is locked away with a big metal wall. Only Monokuma can open it, since he has the controls.
Tumblr media
The areas to which we have access are the dormitories, that are separated between girls and boys — each door has a picture of its owner, occupying four corridors, each separate part being connected to a simple tea room.
The boys's dormitories go to its own tea room, filled with... Boyish things. Filthy magazines and things that I will not bother to describe. The bedrooms surrounding this tea room belong to, from left to right: Daiki Komuro, Katashi Fujimoto, Shinichi Inoue, Hachirou Budou, Susumu Yukimura, my own room, Tomomi Haneda and Izamu Adachihara.
Tumblr media
I'm not allowed to see the girl's dormitories, so I don't know how their side of the coin is, but Moriko-san was kind enough to tell me how the distribution of rooms are. They are, from right to left, since it is on the opposite side of the cruise ship, surrounding their tea room: Akiko Hanamachi, Hiroko Maeda, Airi Chisaka, Yuuna Takenaka, Takako Nakako, Rei Oshiro, Michiko Gushiken and Moriko Mizushima.
Tumblr media
The dining hall, the kitchen, and the boat deck are available for us. In the boat deck there is a smocking room and a casino, with stairs for the first deck, in which the dormitories are, but any level beyond that is still locked. I didn't enter the boat deck myself, because of my fear of the sea, but the rest was checked personally. The boat deck was blocked halfway by another mechanic wall.
There is a reading and writing room on what I will call the deck A, near the dormitories, alongside another casino — there's also a courting room, several bathrooms, what appears to be servant rooms (all locked), but by the signs on them, we could deduce they weren't for guests; and, to end it, a big lounge.
Tumblr media
This is it for the School Report File #1. Nobuyuki Atari turning off.

Co-ownership of Action: Trajectories of Elements
The Japan Pavilion at the 17th International Architecture Exhibition, La Biennale di Venezia presents “Co-ownership of Action: Trajectories of Elements,” curated by Kadowaki Kozo. The project involves dismantling an old wooden house into its individual parts and elements, transporting them to Venice, and reconstructing the house in a new configuration with the addition of modern materials (such as scaffolding pipe, mesh, and blue tarps). The architects working on the project are collaborating with artisans and researchers to include improvisation and creative processes on site as part of the exhibition.
The issue of incessant mass consumption in contemporary society has been further intensified by movement, the ability to move large volumes of things quickly and inexpensively. Moving a postwar house that has outlived its usefulness in Japan to Venice and exhibiting it in a different context gives a completely new existence to the old materials that had once been part of a very ordinary house. By shifting the focus from movement for the purpose of consumption to movement for the purpose of reconstruction, the exhibition provides a significant stimulus for thinking about the issues associated with mass consumption, about the sustainability of architecture, and about how new architecture should be approached.

Curator’s statement Your actions are not yours alone. Any act, however trivial, sits atop an accumulation of countless acts that arose from your interactions with someone else. Therefore it can never be said that what you do belongs solely to you.
This exhibition consists of an extremely ordinary Japanese wooden house. A country at the forefront of the world in population decline, Japan is awash in houses that have outlived their usefulness and sit there awaiting demolition. The house we shipped to Venice is one of them.
However, the house did not arrive in Venice intact. Having been dismantled to fit into containers for shipping, its various elements found new uses, repurposed into objects and structures appropriate for the garden of the Japan Pavilion, with roof elements being converted into benches, and so on. To reassemble the fragmented house on site into diverse configurations, the architects have engaged the skills and ideas of local and Japanese artisans, giving new life to each of the elements.
Elements that were not used in the garden are on display inside the Pavilion itself, which serves as a warehouse for the project. After its initial construction, the house underwent numerous renovations and expansions over the years that altered it in complex ways. Arranging its elements by era thus provides a clear picture of how the house contains the strata of successive periods in the history of postwar Japanese housing. For example, the earliest elements were primarily handmade, but as time progressed these were replaced by mass-produced members, a visible manifestation of the dramatic changes that took place in Japan’s construction industry over the course of the life of the house.
Upon viewing this thick accumulation of strata with one’s own eyes, it should be evident that the project architects have done only the slightest overwriting of that history. The trajectory that the house has taken in its long journey through time and space to arrive at this place is proof of how our actions are ineluctably rooted in the past and linked to the future. Japan Pavilion at the 17th International Architecture Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia Co-ownership of Action: Trajectories of Elements
Updates
When the exhibition was delayed for a year as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic, curator Kozo Kadowaki and others launched a new curator-organized project associated with the Japan Pavilion exhibition.
The aim was to 1) make good use of materials and elements after the Biennale, and 2) provide new ways for people to participate in the exhibition. This was achieved through an upcycle project to create products using materials such as wood from the house being transported to Venice, making the products available to project supporters through a crowdfunding process that facilitated a new way of participating in the exhibition and the addition of new trajectories.
After the exhibition, the house will move on again. There are plans in motion for it to be used as part of a community facility for residents of an apartment complex in the suburbs of Oslo. Funds raised by crowdfunding will also play a significant part in this and other post-Biennale initiatives.
The crowdfunding process was launched on August 11, 2020, and closed on October 1, 2020 after raising 4,825,888 yen from 259 supporters. Find out more: https://ift.tt/3vXN1SU

So, What went wrong with Ao Oni THE ANIMATION?
MelSquid, doing something orderly for once?!
Nah I just need to detox myself of these thoughts I’ve had for months. Of course this is just my thoughts.
Spoilers under the cut.
Putting aside the cheap shot of just saying the animation sucks(it did don’t get me wrong but the 2D aspects of it was really nice, if I am to be honest) I wanna talk more about the plot and characters.
The characters(sans two) were really really good! They were voice acted well and even though they weren’t really fleshed out as much to my liking - you could tell they all had some sort of relationship to each other, their designs were rather boring at first glance but I can see why they were made in such a fashion(it was one of, if not the first of Studio DEEN’s full CGI movie; simple is best n all that), the OST was really nice(I’m always down for some Akiko Shikata) and yeah.
But that’s where it ends.
The two characters I don’t like(Tachibana and Mifuyu) the reason I don’t like them was because well, the movie would’ve been better without them, in my personal opinion - they just brought plot twists that didn’t make sense and left me with more questions then what I had going in. They left so many loose ends just by existing that it frustrated me.
Also on Mifuyu Hatano:
Everything she did was pointless. She didn’t have to kill the game creator - The Folklore club was nowhere close to finding her out or that Onis existed until she killed the creator. Then their investigation started; which fucked her over.
She didn’t have to kill the Folklore club either.
SHE HAS MEMORY ERASURE POWERS, EXHIBITED THROUGHOUT THE MOVIE.
So why didn’t she do that? instead of leading them on and killing them? why not just make them forget and move on? She legit did it for kicks - as she reveals in the end.
That’s...Not a good reason(In a movie anyway, if it were a series then it could’ve been played a bit better), story telling wise anyway; and the fact she didn’t receive any retribution for killing them either because again, ~Memory Erasure~
I just...I felt cheated out of a good ending you know?
Speaking of which, the Typical Ao Oni Formula(tm) always had someone escape(Hiroshi, Anna and Takuro) - it’s always been this way. So I guess that plays a part of why I felt so cheated and disappointed when all the students(and Fujimoto-sensei) were killed. Just for them to be forgotten.
That and Junko and Koji were killed for nothing other than Shock Value. That’s it. Just so Mifuyu could win. It was awful and I hated it.
Sho only survived to have like some ends tied and more and more questions made than killed off - he would’ve made a good like, mind slave imo(oh yeah Mifuyu could do that as well...So why did she kill them again?)
Overall, the plottwists were bad and frankly, unnecessary.
PS: That 2014 Ao Oni chatter though, and the fact both climaxes take place in a basement....
