sketchpage headverse update, World War II era:
so originally, I was just gonna do Wraith, but ended adding Neil Sinclair/Subject Zero from Project: Superman and a metahuman each for the Axis Powers.
Wraith: arriving on Earth in response to a mathematical SOS Formula, Wraith quickly found himself at odds with Wonder Woman and the Justice Society over differing ideas on justice and how to best protect humanity, mostly from itself. This culminated in a bloody, drag out brawl between Wraith and Diana in Japanese Airspace, as she did everything in her power to prevent the alien “hero” from slaughtering hundreds of thousands of innocent Japanese civilians. While she was distracted, the US military would drop the first atomic bomb on Hiroshima, largely proving Wraith’s point. Once the second bomb dropped on Nagasaki, Diana gave up on Man’s World yet again, and vanished. Wraith returned to his base—The Machine—and waited for her to return.
So obviously a couple big changes here, mostly that Wraith was a. known to the public in 1945 and b. a Wonder Woman villain circa the Golden Age instead of a Superman villain/ally (?) in the modern day. I don’t think I ever actually finished Unchained because every time I try to read it my eyes kinda glaze over. Wraith does emerge in the modern day, now in connection with Neil Sinclair (now William Rudolph’s other grandkid), who instead of getting modified with Kryptonian DNA, gets metagene therapy from Wraith. They develop a sort of parent-child bond, as Wraith does what he can to train Neil and curb their more vicious instincts heightened by their new powers.
of the Axis characters, Legionary is an Italian hero who’s actually at odds with Mussolini’s government and trying to protect civilians from both the Italian and American militaries. He’s Alphonso Giovanni, the Batmen of All Nations member, though in this version he was always a heavy guy bc idk I think more fat superheroes would be cool and I think the shorthand of “Legionary got heavy and lazy/complacent and that gets him murdered” is…not great. He does still eventually get Merc’d by a Black Glove operative, but that’s more to do with his advanced age and he puts up a good fight before he goes.
Ubermensch—known in America and Britain as Captain Nazi—is Albrecht Krieger, a ten year old Hitler Youth who was selected by High Command’s occult division to receive the “blessing” of a shard from the Rock of Eternity, provided by Vandal Savage. Albrecht is a fervent Nazi, well aware of the Final Solution, and generally just a fucking monster. He actually gets progressively worse as the war comes to end and after, thrown through the Bleed in pursuit of Shazam, coming into contact with his new masters, the Eternal Reich of Earth-X.
The last character here…is complicated. While Asami Koizumi is the modern Samurai, there was a Golden Age Samurai: the Demon Lord Oda Nobunaga. Revived in the early days of the war, Oda currently actually travel too far beyond the Japanese Archipelago without risking a return to his deceased state. Being largely uninvolved with the war effort was frustrating for the revived daimyo, who instead focused his efforts on exploring mysticism and Buddhist tenets in an effort to increase his power and gain the capacity to explore the wider world. He came into conflict with Wraith as well, their so-called “War of Demons” being among the most destructive meta human battles in the Pacific Theater. It was Diana’s selfless attempt to join their final fight that allowed Oda to realize the truth of himself: Oda Nobunaga had been dead for centuries, he was merely a revenant with that man’s face. Wind Dragon, the man who had abandoned his past, sealed his himself away. A young history student, Toshio Eto, would discover the Wind Dragon years later and use its power to become the Silver Age Samurai, before his student, a meta human named Asami Koizumi, would succeed him in turn.

"Wait a second." Richard holds up his right hand. "You're telling me that the embodiment of Germany is a Nazi superhero?" "They don't age. If no one kills them they can just keep going." He glances back at the shroud-draped outline of Albrecht Krieger. "When Adolf Hitler came to power, his associates in the Thule Society told him of this. He ordered them to find the embodiment of Germany. Probably, he was hoping they would be a Prussian militarist. We don't know exactly. Instead, he found a man named 'Lucky' Hans, working in a puppet theatre in München. He embodied the German spirit as it was in the seventeenth century, poorly organised, cheerful and happy go lucky." Richard grimaces. "I'll bet Hitler wasn't too pleased." "I doubt it very much. So, Wolf Krieger informed his leader of this, but promised to him that it could be fixed. Poor Hans was abducted, ritually murdered and… Albrecht Krieger was the result. Hitler had his Aryan superman. Worse, for we Germans, he had a constant connection to our souls." Raquel narrows her eyes. "You're not saying, that's the reason why the Holocaust-." Mister Wernholt holds up his hands. "No, no. Of course not. At that time, there were more than enough people sufficiently devoted to the cause to carry out that genocide without the need for magic intervention. It is only since the end of the Second World War that we have felt the baleful effects. There is a tendency in the Human mind to retroactively justify the things you have done, even when you know that they were wrong. It is a form of ego preservation. If you perform a misdeed you can only become a better person by recognising that and resolving to behave differently in future. Now, imagine if there was someone inside your soul, constantly telling you that you were right all along. That the Nazis were powerful and cool, and not the gang of hateful murderers they actually were." He shakes his head. "There is a reason why Auschwitz is left as it was and not turned into a memorial park. But we grew accustomed to that. We kept needing to do more! I mean, my God! We had brass plaques with the names of Holocaust victims placed across our major cities in nineteen ninety two! We had to mutilate our psyche as a nation just to keep Albrecht Krieger out of our heads!" "And… Now you don't?" "No. I mean, the Holocaust was a great evil, but… Speaking for myself as a man in his thirties? Someone whose parents were born in the fifties? It is a historical one. A black mark on our nation's history, but one which has no personal relevance to me. No more than most Americans feel the need to berate themselves over the Trail of Tears." Raquel crosses her arms across her chest. "Maybe they should." "If you look in any nation's history, there are any number of things to be ashamed of. Usually, they do not have to be confronted by them every time they turn on the History Channel." He shakes his head. "Constant shame is not a good way to live. If nothing else, because it distracts from the things you are doing wrong now." He comes to a stop, then steps away and motions to the bodies. "These will be cremated, mixed with silver and calcium oxide, exorcised and then scattered widely in secret locations. Let this finally be the end of it."
This excerpt is weird. Because clearly it’s not the true explanation; Germany did that in our world, where no magic exists. But it makes far more sense.

'Ascendant' Series in the works at Starz as 'Divergent' franchise moves to TV
Adam Cozad is attached to pen the script as Lionsgate looks to mine its library on the premium cable network. The Divergent franchise is inching closer to continuing on the small screen. Premium cable network Starz is developing a TV take Ascendant, what was to be the fourth movie in the Divergent franchise. Writer Adam Cozad (Tarzan) is attached to pen the script as producers Lionsgate look to its newly acquired full stake in Starz to mine the stalled feature franchise. Cozad will exec produce alongside Lee Toland Krieger (Age of Adaline) after they were both previously set to write and direct what would have been the fourth movie in the Divergent franchise. Ascendant is in its early stages of development. It's unclear if the project would reunite any of the stars of the features including Shailene Woodley, Theo James and Ansel Elgort. Lionsgate TV and Starz declined comment. After seeing diminishing box office returns, Lionsgate opted to first slash the budget on Ascendant before dropping the feature completely. Woodley, for her part, has been open to completing the story. The actress, who stars as Tris, initially rejected the idea of doing a TV movie to wrap the franchise. "I signed up to tell the whole story of Tris, and I would love to be able to do that," she said in September. "Nothing would make me happier." Multiple stars are expected to opt out of their deals if the movie evolved into a TV series. Ascendant was originally poised to debut June 9, 2017, but after the franchise's third installment, Allegiant grossed a mere $66 million domestically Lionsgate began to rethink its strategy for the fourth film based on Veronica Roth's book series. For Lionsgate TV, the Divergent series could be a win for the former independent studio that now has a cable network to supploy content. The TV arm recently fought to save ABC’s Nashville at Viacom-owned CMT. The studio’s TV credits include Netflix’s Orange Is the New Black and a Dear White People adaptation as well as E!’s The Royals. Given the Lionsgate deal, Starz is now expected to vertically integrate and focus its upcoming scripted originals on ownership. The cable network recently went straight to series on The Rook, a drama from Twilight author Stephenie Meyer as Starz CEO Chris Albrecht told reporters there would be more Lionsgate-produced fare to come.
