Hi I saw your post about the phrase "se ei ole mistään kotoisin" and the book you linked looks interesting I just might get it 👀 I have an Amazon gift card that I want to spend on something fun and I was wondering if you have any Finnish book recommendations!! Either with translation or in simpler Finnish works too :D
Omg!
Ngl you were in my mind when I was writing that book recommendation :3 I hope you will enjoy it if you end up getting it! But keep in mind that because it is humorous it is not a deeb dive but rather scracthing the surface.
I will have to do a confession here that I don't read too much of finnish literature (something that I need to fix)
A general tip: try adding "selkokirja" (or selkosuomi/selkokielinen) to your search. Selkokirjat are books writen, or re-writen into simpler finnish than the original. (yle's website has a section "selkouutiset" where you find news in selkosuomi
Sorry, I wrote you a really long list, but maybe more is better so you can pick and choose.
-The moomin books by Tove Janson! Pick any one, Comet in Moominland and Midsommer Madness are my faves. They were originally written in swedish because Tove was swedish-speaking finn, so finnish editions are translations. There's also comics.
-Not Before Sundown by Johanna Sinisalo. English translation (and many other) is available of this one. This book is about a gay man called Enkeli (angel) who takes a baby troll into his house and tries to take care of it. But troll is part of a wild nature and the night. From tiny snippets we follow how this turns out. Finlandia Prize winner.
-The Unkown Soldier by Väinö Linna. This is THE Book in Finland. A finnish classic and the nation's "collective memory" of the Continuation war against Russia. Many movies made out of this one. According to wikipedia there is a new english translation from 2015, which is better than the previous but some of the localization has been critizied.
-The Purge by Sofi Oksanen. A very dark and depressing book set in the soviet occupation of Estonia. Haven't read this one yet but it is widely popular. Check wikipedia for more info.
-Ja hän huutaa: Splatterpunk-Antologia (Aaave Taajuus, 2014) I took you like violence and blood, well here's a collection of splatterunk short stories writen by different finnish horror authors. Havent read all of them yet, but the ones I have read have been... good in a way of "I wanted to be disgusted and I got what I wanted". Let me tell you, these shortstories are propably the most gruesome shit writen in finnish horror scene. All warnigns ably. You honestly just need to read the backcover. It's only available in finnish but I don't think the language will be too complex.
-Pyöveli by Anneli Kanto. Only available in finnish but it's a humortictic, grotesk story set in medieval Finland following the son of an executioner, a newly (un)happily married judge in Vaasa and a peasant determined to get a new, succesfull life.
- Magdalena Hai writes speculative finnish fiction
Some recomendations by my friends: -Ilkka Remes is a thriler writer but I couldn't find any of his works translated
-Childrens books: Risto Räppääjä -books (K makes references to him in few songs!) and Heinähattu ja Vilttitossu.
-Kepler62 by Timo Parvela (Scifi)
-Varjot by Timo Parvela (fantasy)
-Hirviöasiakaspalvelu, kuinka voin auttaa by Anni Nupponen (monster customer service), the publisher is Osuuskumma
-Leena Krohn writes horror/fantasy
Also some classic finnish books are:
-The seven brothers by Aleksis Kivi, the first novel writen completely in finnish. I read this one, at first it was fun but near the ending draged on way too long, sori Aleksi. You will see this one being referenced all the time.
-The Egyptian (Sinuhe egyptiläinen) by Mika Waltari.
-Minna Canth's plays like Työmiehen Vaimo or Annaliisa. They deal with women's position in the victorian era.

Dress your Livestock game:
Since you have so many livestock to take care of, I am going to give you some outfits and you are to choose for whom they would fit best:
(1) a little black dress (revealing)
(2) a gothic dress (of your choice)
(3) formal channel suit (pinkish or blueish; specify)
(4) Anne Boleyn dress
(5) male suit (like you have for a female livestock)
(6) Lolita dress
(7) formal kimono
One outfit, one livestock.
Because I am very curious!!!
“So many livestock to take care of…? What on earth are you talking about? Oi, don’t just leave all these resplendent garments on my doorstep. I have no use for—“
Tumblr media
Before he could finish speaking, Ruki found himself alone with one scanty yet silky smooth little black dress, two midnight onyx gothic dresses, three tweed Chanel suits (two in pale pink, one in baby blue), four Anne Boleyn dresses that spilled onto the floor when removed from the packaging, five extravagant suits of a masculine style, six pastel-colored lolita dresses, and seven unisex formal kimonos, all adorned with ornate patterns and shapes.
Tumblr media
“Good grief… I don’t have the time, space, nor patience for this. Though I already have ideas of who to assign each outfit to. Yes, these shall suit them quite nicely… If they are so willing to don such unusual attire, that is. I suppose a master must reward his livestock every now and then.”
Tumblr media
First, the Vampire examined the little black dress, stunningly beautiful despite not leaving much to the imagination.
“Ah, this dress doesn’t reveal the stomach at least. In that case, it’s perfect for Irina ( @iricathel ). While it’s not modest in the chest area, it would suit her hourglass figure to a T.”
Tumblr media
Second came the two gothic dresses, the color of umbral shadow much like the previous garment.
“Hm… I always see him crossdressing. In fact, this seems to be right up Lukas’ ( @princesscrownprince ) alley. It wouldn’t be his first choice, sure, but something tells me he won’t ever quiet down over receiving an unsolicited gift from me. Well, no matter. I’ll gladly give this to him.”
A redheaded Ghoul who often wore Victorian style clothing came to mind with the other gothic dress.
“It’s rare for me to gift anything to Scarlett ( @kindan-no-kanojo ), but I get the feeling she would not only appreciate this dress, but also look marvelous in it as well. The lack of hue contrasts immaculately with her vivid red hair.”
Tumblr media
Third came the formal Chanel suits. A stubborn yet resolute girl bearing the mark of a crown and his benefactor’s initial came to mind for the blue one in particular.
“How appropriate for a student council president. I ought to give this to Caria ( @cursed--requiem ). Surely she can’t refuse such sophisticated garb.”
After remembering a ball with the half-Vibora half-Founder, it became clear to Ruki who should don one of the pink suits.
“Ah, Aleksi ( @besnella )… This pink suit would complement her auburn locks perfectly. She seems like a very determined woman despite our short time acquainting ourselves with one another, but I’d certainly like to see her wear this.”
One pink suit remained. A diligent Vampire who refused to prey on innocence surfaced in his thoughts.
“Somehow this outfit looks like it belongs in Maria’s ( @veiledsagacity ) wardrobe. It undoubtedly gives off an educated and reserved vibe. Come to think of it, I haven’t asked her for her date of birth, yet she gifted me presents for my own birthday. I hope she will appreciate the gesture in return.”
Tumblr media
Next, Ruki took out the Anne Boleyn dresses, pondering to himself who should accept such intricately designed clothing reminiscent of eras past. A lavender-haired Witch immediately came to mind.
“Josephine ( @thatonefrenchwitch ) would look utterly remarkable in this dress. I can already picture her long hair cascading over such lustrous fabric. Heh, she’d truly look like a Witch wearing this. I truly can’t wait to see it.”
Then a certain blonde came to mind, one with a penchant for fashion.
“Ah, it may not be her style per se, but Serena ( @serenaleblanc ) would look absolutely breathtaking if she were to don this dress. Perhaps she can even appraise the worth of such mysterious clothing as well, given her talents.”
Visions of a cheeky bandaged girl wearing one of the Anne Boleyn dresses swirled in his imagination.
“Indeed, Shoma ( @komori--shoma ) might not be opposed to wearing this. I’m certain she’d appear bewitching, wearing such vibrant colors against her alabaster hair and complexion.”
Last but not least, Ruki considered his benefactor’s very own daughter.
“There is no dress out of this selection more appropriate for the daughter of Karlheinz-sama. Yes, Yuuko ( @sakamaki--yuuko ) wouldn’t oppose to wearing this, especially when she’d look like a princess straight from a fable.”
Tumblr media
Drastically different from the other selections, the Vampire then averted his gaze to the five suits. He set aside three for his brothers, leaving two left for a generous gift. The taciturn yet intellectual classmate and companion from the academy could use formal attire, or so Ruki surmised.
“Come to think of it, I’ve never seen Virek ( @crimson-mayhem ) wear anything quite as dignified as this. I do look forward to his reaction when I give this suit to him… Perhaps he’ll utter a word or two and nothing more, but what matters is that he wears it in the end.”
Then his much adored bounty hunter came to mind. Indeed, Ruki looked forward to seeing the half-Founder wear extravagant attire as if they were attending a grand event under cover together.
“Ah, Mystic ( @mino-diabolik )… You would look even more ravishing than you already do in this suit. It’s not often that I give him any sort of tangible gift, but I do hope he appreciates it nonetheless.”
Tumblr media
Nearing the bottom of the abundance of clothes, Ruki directed his attention towards the delicately adorned lolita dresses. The girl who supposedly respected his benefactor just as much, if not more than he did very clearly had a penchant for this type of garb. A smile rose on his lips after realizing the heaven-made match.
“Nunnally ( @lured-into-wonderland ) is wearing this—no ifs, ands, or buts about it. It’s an order she cannot refuse, not that I believe she would anyway. It would appear wondrous on her.”
The elven maid surfaced in his thoughts as well. A promising reward for one so steadfast.
“This would compliment Estella’s ( @yourlocaltea ) silver hair with the utmost pulchritude. It may be a bit childish for her but regardless I believe she should wear other clothes aside from her servant attire.”
Next, an ostensibly cheerful sacrifice came to mind.
“Honestly, it’s difficult for me to imagine Sunny ( @sunny-flower-spot ) wearing such an elaborate dress, but it’s equally as bright and light-hearted as her. I’m sure it’s in her nature to try new things every now and then.”
And how could he forget the obnoxious pink-haired shapeshifter?
“Ah, Metsu ( @metsu-san )… This lolita dress looks a bit fancy for her liking, and knowing her she might ruin it somehow, but it’s better to give her this than any of the other options.”
Furthermore, the aspiring dance instructor also looked like a suitable fit for the lolita attire.
“Fiona ( @misslittlefounder ) should wear this. The many ruffles and bows are a tad feminine but nonetheless I can see her donning the dress with aplomb.”
Unlike the previous girls, a woman with a more dark and defiant aesthetic to her arose in his vision.
“How ironic would it be to give such a pastel dress to Kira ( @yourlocaltea ), of all people? I’d be humored to see that.”
Tumblr media
Finally, only the fancy kimonos required recipients at this point. The Vampire rummaged through the deluxe clothing and textiles, vacillating between options on the fortune person who would wear the spectacular garb, impressive enough to strike inspiration in all who laid eyes upon it. Specifically a deft and beloved painter.
“I’m certainly no artist, but not even the most skilled in the world could capture Ellen’s ( @ana-darkcloud ) beauty if they were to wear this kimono. I should give it to them posthaste.”
Idols would often model these traditional outfits in spirit of the festivals that took place in Japan, however, knowing that Kuron took on both the role of idol and teacher, Ruki surmised a summer festival would be just what he needed to reserve a day of respite to himself.
“This kimono would suit Kuron ( @mukami-kuron-mrsadisticcat ) splendidly indeed. I know he most likely already has his own, but I’m hoping he will at least accept this as a token of my gratitude.”
Speaking of which, students would frequent such events as well. Including a particular girl from the academy, or so the Vampire thought.
“Angelica ( @dialovers-angelica ) might not have a proper kimono for this summer after all. Last time I checked, her family isn’t exactly affluent and the garments tend to be expensive. Therefore, she ought to be impressed with this formal wear. I wonder if she has ever worn one so elegant.”
While Ruki still didn’t know Nami Arisu all that well yet, he hoped to close the distance between them and use an opportune moment where they could both go outdoors in their kimono to better acquaint themselves with one another.
“Hm… That girl from the academy would look charming in a formal kimono. She seemed interested in my cooking and the books I’ve read, so perhaps Nami ( @sunturbogel ) might appreciate this gift from me as well.”
Although she was far from mortal, Ruki considered giving a kimono to his coveted acquaintance who also attended the academy. Cyra Abbas, a woman who, unbeknownst to the Vampire, lived on this earth far longer than he could’ve imagined.
“I realize that Cyra ( @cyra-abbas ) usually sticks to her white and gold aesthetic, but I do think that a formal kimono such as this would bring out her beauty so effortlessly. Perhaps her and I can explore the festivities in Japan and indulge in all the local cuisine.”
Daughter of Beatrix and Karlheinz, he determined Ayame Sakamaki would radiate an unforeseen glory donning such a cultural symbol.
“Ayame ( @sakamakiayame ) most likely hasn’t experienced too many opportunities to wear this exquisite garb. It’s time we change that.”
Once again, last but not least, his dear fallen seraph sprung to mind. Perhaps incisions could be made in the fabric to accommodate for their wings, but Ruki longed to see his beloved Azazel don an extravagant look, perhaps one that might temporarily distract them from the recent inner turmoil of a shattering halo and contemplations of the afterlife.
“This array of rich patterns and honored craftsmanship looks like the type of attire Azazel ( @ana-darkcloud ) might adore. I’d love to see my dear angel wear it.”
After deciding who would obtain which clothing, the Vampire sighed in exhaustion, preparing the garments for their proper imparting.  Just observing all the various textiles in their lavish details down to every delicate thread encouraged Ruki to wear a sumptuous ensemble of his own. A suit as dark as his own cinereous black strands and a tie ivory as his fangs.
“With this, everything is ready.”
Tumblr media
🧩 DISCLAIMER: THE AU’S ARE STILL SEPARATE. I JUST COULDN’T THINK OF A BETTER WAY TO DISCUSS ALL OF THEM IN ONE GO WITH EVERYTHING STILL MAKING SENSE 😭 but I promise there is no infidelity happening here. This isn’t a harem Rooks scenario. Anyway, I apologize for any unwanted tags but I also wanted to find a loophole that would allow me to include more than just seven OCs. Feel free to reply if you want but omg I might end up typing starters for each person mentioned with the outfit they are receiving… Who knows. We’ll see if my motivation permits me to do so, ahaha. In any event, I thought this was such a cute idea. I’d love more asks like this in the future honestly. 🏃‍♀️ 🧩

What are in your opinion the top 3 finnish esc performances?
Also who fo you think are the most attractive / hottest finnish contestants ever? I need this for science👀 (if you are comfortable answering)
What a lovely ask! 🖤 I picked three performances based on styling (clothes, hair, make-up, jewellery), choreography, staging and lightning choices, camera angles, vocal performance and charisma of the singers and back-up singers & musicians, and how well all of of those support the melody, lyrics and structure of the song. I suck at making definitive rankings so these are in chronological order 😄
1977: Monika Aspelund - Lapponia
youtube
Lapponia tells the story of a beautiful witch maiden in Lapland and the man who falls in love with her, and Monika really acts out the lyrics to the camera with her expressions. The blue and white (Finnish flag colours my beloved) styling with Lapponia brand jewellery is very simple yet stylish in a Nordic way and fits the song well. Vocal performance of both Monika and the back-up singers is near perfect considering she was suffering from angina at the time and still managed to hit the high note. Choregraphy again is simple but works and compliments the epic chorus, and the end frame is possibly the greatest of Finland's Eurovision history. There's a reason why this is still my favorite entry of all time.
1990: Anneli Saaristo - La Dolce Vita
youtube
Once again: simple yet effective. The song is a great combination of melancholic Finnish mindset with Spanish and Italian influences. The main melody flows effortlessly and her low, dark and full voice is perfect for that. Throwing in the acoustic guitar and some flamenco claps for Mediterranean flavor when she is singing about beautiful sweet life in the chorus. Staging is beautifully balanced with the guitar players on both sides of Anneli and she really pops with the red outfit and makeup, bringing out the passion of the song. And listen to the horns and violin sections of the live orchestra! The ending pose is the cherry on top. One of the most succesfull Finnish entries ever and deservedly so.
2021: Blind Channel - Dark Side
youtube
Dispite some slight mishaps in the vocal performance, as a whole I love this performance to bits. The background screens with them hanging upside down in white clothes so the stage is not too dark. The combination of red and black. The contrast between Joel and Niko that was purposefully built by giving Niko the rapper look with darker hair and Joel the rocker look with blonder hair. The pyros right from the start and throughout the song. The choreography that looks natural and effortless despite being rehearsed hundreds of hours. The text JOIN in Joonas's guitar, when I first saw him lifting it in their second rehearsal clip I got chills. How they make Niko's and Joel's height difference work by putting Joel behind Niko to whisper like a demon. How dynamic and full of energy the entire performance is and how they are giving their ALL. Joonas & Olli walking to mid stage to join the HU HU HU choreography with Niko & Joel. Aleksi's hairflip. Joonas's hairstyle and clothes and the guitar spin. Him lifting the guitar for the slow part and how Olli looks at the camera. Kneeling Joel. JOIN on Niko's palm. How the energy builds up for the final chorus and them all making the huge jump together, perfectly timed with the pyros. The "headshot" move. Joonas & Olli just spinning and running from opposite directions across the stage during HU HU HU HU, twice. The final scream & pyro combination. 😭😭😭🖤🖤🖤 MY BOYS DID THAT
I'm glad you didn't ask for top-3 hottest contestants, because that would be impossible 😄 Some of those whose looks I've appreciated are Blind Channel (2021), The Rasmus (2022), Käärijä (2023), Sebastian Rejman (2019) and Jarkko Ahola (Teräsbetoni 2008). Boys of Softengine (2014) were adorable, as well as Paradise Oskar (2011) 🥰

No one asked for this but I was just randomly reminded of BBC's most recent adaption of The Musketeers (2014-2016) and the single most brilliant line in anything ever ("I'll punch you so hard you'll beg me to kick you") and it got me thinking, how come no one has suggested The Musketeers BC AU? You had one job, guys... 😤
So let's start with the easy one: Tommi as Porthos, local strongman, looks like could kill you, is actually a cinnamon roll
Equally obvious is Joel as Athos, permanent sour face, hates everything and everyone, or at least he wants everyone to think so. The wine bottle on a Friday night is enough of a lover for him, thank you very much
And speaking of lovers, I present you Joonas as Aramis, the romantic who just can't keep it in his pants. How many times has the country almost had to start a war, just because Joonas had given in to love and lust 🙄 (according to Joel, he's fucked half of France)
Olli as young and charming D'Artagnan (Aleksi could also work, but he's needed elsewhere lol)
Niko as Queen Anne 💅 #bowdownbitches
(Sorry but Louis XIII is not around in this AU. He died of turberculosis (true story!). Yes yes, very sad. Anyway!)
And finally, Aleksi as Milady de Winter, the on/off lover of Athos!Joel
(Poor Santeri can make an appearance as long-suffering Captain Treville)
Plotlines include:
1) Athos!Joel drowning his sorrows at the pub until a familiar shape appears at the door frame and lures him to the chambers upstairs. Joel hates himself the next morning, for Milady!Aleksi is gone and fooled him again, but maybe Aleksi is just as miserable as Joel is?
2) Intense flirting between Aramis!Joonas and Anne!Niko who, completely by coincidence, keep running into each other in the strangest of circumstances. Joonas doesn't think it's safe for Niko to be wandering outside the palace in disguise without a guard to visit the poor, but Niko is not the kind of queen to whom you can tell what to do. And that's only one of the reasons why Joonas adores him so 💘
(Later they'll be caught by who else but Joel who absolutely loses his mind for Joonas sleeping with the actual fucking queen of France, of all people 😐)
3) Porthos!Tommi teaches D'Artagnan!Olli how to more effortlessly handle his weapons. No, there's no need for Tommi to be standing that close to Olli, but he loves the way Olli blushes when he does. Also featured: playful wrestling matches, because the boy's gotta learn how to defend himself!
They all may drive each other crazy on a daily basis, but in the end it's always all for one and one for all 🖤

[Building] Channel
I said it was coming! A comprehensive guide to Blind Channel members as not just architectural styles, but specific buildings. I hope someone thinks this is a fraction as interesting as I do LOL. Image heavy and thus once more below a cut. I am particularly drawn to the late modern architectural period and all its subgenres so you will note that in my choices. Also most of my interest in and knowledge of architecture I credit to @mcmansionhell so thanks for being a resource to the people! Check the blog out if you're into architectural theory with a side of sass :P
Niko: Mahler 4 Office Tower designed by Rafael Viñoly Architects
Tumblr media
Amsterdam, Netherlands. Constructed from 2001 to 2005.
I'm not nuts about contemporary architecture, but I think this building rips and slaps and knocks it out of the park. Plus, I think it really fits Niko as an artist, especially. He strikes me as someone who is no-nonsense and goal focused, but extremely creative and cutting edge in powerful yet precise ways.
Joonas: 35 Liberty renovated by Todd Davis Architecture (original architect unknown)
Tumblr media
San Francisco, USA. Originally constructed in 1885, renovated in 2011.
Just like Joonas this house is bold as fuck without being too overstated. The black paint over delicate Queen Anne detailing on its facade blows me out of the water and its contemporary interior details are tastefully applied. From my perspective it mirrors Joonas’ distinctive edgy-cute sense of style to a T.
Tommi: Government Service Center designed by Paul Rudolph
Tumblr media
Boston, USA. Constructed from 1966 to 1971.
This complex—technically comprised of two buildings but I couldn't narrow it down—is in my opinion a work of Brutalist genius. It's kind of unassuming if a bit imposing on the macro scale, but its smooth details are stunningly beautiful as you can see from the close ups and interior shots. Is this not Tommi? Tommi’s a quiet and formidable man on the surface but he’s also incredibly smart, astoundingly skilled and polished in his work.
(Unfortunately, the future of the Government Service Center is murky as the state of Massachusetts has been eyeing it for redevelopment; hopefully that doesn't mean a complete structural overhaul at the very least 😥💔)
Olli: M2 Building designed by Kengo Kuma
Tumblr media
Tokyo, Japan. Constructed in 1991.
THIS IS AS THEY SAY THE STUFF!! Think of how drab a building with this palette/material could be but the shapes of it are SO. BOLD! It genuinely fills me with delight to just look at this structure. So there’s an element of its greige-y facade that’s business and function and all that, yet the comically oversized ionic column capital that crowns it is a playful treat; like Olli, this building gets to work, does it beautifully, and still takes the time to get SILLY WITH IT :D
Aleksi: Fuller/White House designed by Antoine Predock
Tumblr media
Scottsdale, (Arizona) USA. Constructed in 1986.
This is possibly my favorite house of all time and from an architect whose entire portfolio I think is phenomenal. Subtle geometric elements on surfaces and cast along the interior by natural light are standout features (as is the friggin' PYRAMID), while much of its exterior is straightforward and functional to let the surrounding environment shine. Aleksi is the perfect allegory as an accomplished and unique artist in his own right whose role in BC just brings their work together even more perfectly :)
Joel: St. Patrick’s Cathedral designed by William Wardell
Tumblr media
Melbourne, Australia. Constructed from 1858 to 1939.
Folks, does it get any more high drama??? I almost assigned Joel the Gothic style in the last BC architecture post BUT I think he’s a little more modern than cut and dry Gothic, so a Victorian era design is the perfect compromise imo. I feel that the contrast and richness of this Gothic Revival structure fit our little ~Prince of the Darkness~ exceptionally. I can just picture him sulking moodily in the shadow of one of its columns 🖤

Could you please assign a novel to each BC member?
hello anon, this was hard but the joke’s on me for mainly reading detective (or depressed) novels :( so i went for classics that i love (and/or had to study in school) to avoid being too niche
aleksi -> anne of green gables - l. m. montgomery (i am still living in the gothagecore!aleksi fantasy, leave me alone)
joel -> the catcher in the rye - j. d. salinger (it's the teen angst yknow)
joonas -> good omens - n. gaiman (it's the whole angels and demons and ineffable husbands vibe)
niko -> pride and prejudice - j. austen (since “titanic” is not a novel, and “romeo and juliet” isn’t either, here you have the third piece of romantic literature/media i know of and despise the most)
olli -> the lord of the rings - j. r. r. tolkien (a bit too obvious oops)
tommi -> a bear called paddington - m. bond (shhh it was either this or winnie the pooh okay so shhh)

(Jacob Burckhardt)

The Big Book of Classic Fantasy, edited by Ann Vandermeer and Jeff VanderMeer, Vintage Books, 2019. Cover art by (Jean Ignace Isidore Gerard) Grandville, info: penguinrandomhouse.com.
Unearth the enchanting origins of fantasy fiction with a collection of tales as vast as the tallest tower and as mysterious as the dark depths of the forest. Fantasy stories have always been with us. They illuminate the odd and the uncanny, the wondrous and the fantastic: all the things we know are lurking just out of sight—on the other side of the looking-glass, beyond the music of the impossibly haunting violin, through the twisted trees of the ancient woods. Other worlds, talking animals, fairies, goblins, demons, tricksters, and mystics: these are the elements that populate a rich literary tradition that spans the globe. A work composed both of careful scholarship and fantastic fun, The Big Book of Classic Fantasy is essential reading for anyone who’s never forgotten the stories that first inspired feelings of astonishment and wonder.

If you are going to be in attendance at the festival, let us know what your looking forward to seeeing in the comments below, on Twitter, Instagram, Reddit, and in the Horror Fiends of Nightmare on Film Street Facebook group!
    Mandy
Director: Pananos Cosmatos Writter: Pananos Cosmatos, Aaron Stewart-Ahn Cast: Nicolas Cage, Andrea Riseborough, Linus Roache, Bill Duke, Ricard Brake
“The peaceful existence of Red Miller (Nicolas Cage) in the Shadow Mountains of 1983 is burned to the ground when a deranged religious sect fixates on Mandy (Andrea Riseborough), the love of his life and, as is soon made very evident, a significant grounding force in his universe. Things deteriorate into a tranced-out nightmare of insect venom, hard drugs and broken-minded delirium as Red journeys into hell in order to avenge the woman he once lived for. Blood will flow in rivers. Worlds will collapse unto themselves.”
    Nightmare Cinema
Director: Alejandro Brugués, Joe Dante, Mick Garris, Ryuhei Kitamura, David Slade Writer: Sandra Becerril, Alejandro Brugués, Lawrence C. Connolly, Mick Garris, Richard Christian Matheson, David Slade Cast: Maurice Benard, Richard Chamberlain, Annabeth Gish, Elizabeth Reaser, Mickey Rourke
“At a forgotten, haunted bijou, a group of strangers have assembled to watch a series of macabre vignettes unspooled by the mysterious Projectionist (Mickey Rourke). Like the best anthology films (DEAD OF NIGHT, CREEPSHOW, TRICK ‘R TREAT), the stories’ tones range from truly deep, dark, psychological, demented horror to ones with a lighter, satirical spin. Witness a ghost story that will chill you to the bone; an exorcism story guaranteed to make your head spin; a B&W descent into clinical madness; a plastic surgery gone horrifyingly awry; and a cabin-in-the-woods slasher ditty with a unique twist you’ll never see coming.”
    Under the Silver Lake
Director: David Robert Mitchell Writer: David Robert Mitchell Cast: Andrew Garfield, Topher Grace, Riley Keough, Zosia Mamet
“Silver Lake, Los Angeles. The city of angels. The dream factory where it’s all too easy to lose contact grasp of Earth and see nothing but stars… Take for example Sam (Andrew Garfield), a prototypical slacker in his mid-thirties, without ambition… though he does have an unpredictable temperament, a penchant for voyeurism, and an unhealthy obsession with pop culture. When a mysterious neighbor (Riley Keough) appears in the sights of his binoculars, then disappears overnight without a trace, the first-class geek cannot help but investigate – possessed, somehow, by the eternal spirit of the countless detectives who stalked the hot asphalt of LA before him. But a Bogart he is not. Sam’s unorthodox methods very quickly leave him confounded; through the looking glass and into the heart of a strange city where dog killers, owl-women, aspiring actresses and gurus rub shoulders, among other high-society demiurges pulling the strings of an entire culture…”
    Terrified
Director: Demián Rugna Writer: Demián Rugna Cast: Ariel Chavarría, Maximiliano Ghione, Norberto Gonzalo, Elvira Onetto
“The lives of three neighbours in Argentina are turned upside down following a series of violent deaths in the area. For retiring inspector Funes, what was supposed to be an easy case suddenly takes a strange turn and he finds himself dealing with more than he can handle. Paranormal experts are brought in to assist in investigating what they believe to be haunted houses, where they will be tested by an evil the likes of which they have never encountered. As the night goes on and chaos is unleashed upon them, nothing, and no one, can be trusted.”
    Tales From The Hood 2
Directed: Darin Scott, Rusty Cundieff Writer: Darin Scott, Rusty Cundieff Cast: Keith David, Alexandria DeBerry, Bill Martin Williams, Bryan Batt, Lou Beatty Jr., Martin Bradford, Kendrick Cross
“Horror is back in the hood! The sequel to the groundbreaking original film TALES FROM THE HOOD reunites executive producer Spike Lee (Honorary Academy Award® winner) and writers/directors/producers Rusty Cundieff and Darin Scott for an all-new gripping, horrifying and oftentimes devilishly comical anthology. Keith David stars as a contemporary Mr. Simms to tell bloodcurdling stories about lust, greed, pride and politics through tales with demonic dolls, possessed psychics, vengeful vixens and historical ghosts. Mr. Simms’s haunting stories will make you laugh… while you scream.“
    The Witch In The Window
Director: Andy Mitton Writer: Andy Mitton Cast: Arija Bareikis, Alex Draper, Greg Naughton, Carol Stanzione, Charlie Tacker
“Divorced dad Simon (Alex Draper) brings his 12-year-old son, Finn (Charlie Tacker) out to Vermont to help him renovate an old house he recently purchased. Used to the speed of New York City, Finn has an impossible time slowing down to a smalltown pace, and he’s disappointed before even getting there. So is Simon (“I guess I was hoping I would catch you on the 12 side of 12, instead of the 13 side of 12”). Afflicted with a rare medical condition in which there’s a literal hole in his heart, Simon, ever resourceful, does what he can to make things good as he and his son attempt to repair what’s broken. Soon, a series of nonsensically terrifying happenings occur, nightmarish and incomprehensible. It becomes clear that they aren’t alone in the house. That there is more work to be done than either could be capable of grasping. That death is a partially living state. And that they are in a very special kind of danger.“
  The Dark
Director: Justin P. Lange Writer: Justin P. Lange Cast: Nadia Alexander, Karl Markovics, Toby Nichols
“Once upon a dark, dark time, there was a girl, lonely, undead and bloodthirsty. Behind her a dark, dark past – a curse. Hidden in the dark, dark woods, she tirelessly haunts her childhood home. Mina (Nadia Alexander) is a damaged soul, and tears to pieces anyone who dares enter her hunting ground. When she meets Alex (Toby Nichols), a disfigured and blind boy, brought to her by mysterious circumstances, her animalistic cannibal instincts seem to strangely fade away. As this uncanny friendship grows, little by little, both of these lost children learn how to reach out to the hints of light left within.”
    Cold Skin
Director: Xavier Gens Writer: Jesus Olmo, Eron Sheean Cast: Aura Garrido, David Oakes, Ray Stevenson
“In the early years of the 20th century, a young man (David Oakes) takes over the responsibility of surveying the weather of a secluded island in the Antarctic. Hoping for isolation and time for self-reflection, he instead finds a crazed and weathered person named Gruner, played by genre favourite Ray Stevenson (DEXTER, THOR, DIVERGENT). Gruner quickly reveals that there is more to this island than meets the eye and that below the icy depths, a terrible scourge lurks. The extent of Gruner’s madness slowly becomes more and more pronounced as his bloodlust for the creatures becomes apparent. Struggling for survival, the surveyor must choose between a madman and a legion of creatures he does not fully understand.”
    Heavy Trip
Director: Juuso Laatio, Jukka Vidgren Writer: Juuso Laatio, Jari Olavi Rantala, Aleksi Puranen, Jukka Vidgren Cast: Johannes Holopainen, Minka Kuustonen, Ville Tiihonen
“Life has its downsides in a small, northern Finnish town. The local bros give long-haired, leather-clad Turo a tough time, and his job at the mental hospital is literally shitty. His crush on Miia at the flower shop is thwarted by the tacky lounge singer Jouni, and his band jams in the back of a reindeer slaughterhouse. In the plus column for Turo, well… there’s the band, even if these black-metal true-believers have never gigged in all their 12 years together (Turo’s concealed but crippling stage fright hasn’t helped). A miraculous crack at a major metal festival in Norway jumpstarts the quartet’s dreams, and Impaled Rektum set out on a metallic mission that will make them confront not only doubts, detours and difficulties, but also Vikings in longships (plus an elf), graverobbing, Swedish rocket launchers and wolverine-wrestling (dangerous… and awkward!).“
    Dans La Brume
Director: Daniel Roby Writer: Guillaume Lemans, Jimmy Bemon, Mathieu Delozier Cast: Romain Duris, Olga Kurylenko, Fantine Harduin, Michel Robin, Anne Gaylor
“Mathieu (Romain Duris, DE BATTRE MON COEUR S’EST ARRÊTÉ) and Anna (Olga Kurylenko, QUANTUM OF SOLACE) are the parents of a girl (Fantine Harduin, HAPPY END) who suffers from a genetic disorder forcing her to live in a hermetic box that filters the air. This already vulnerable existence becomes even more precarious on the day Paris is hit by an earthquake, and then filled with a mysterious toxic gas that seems to come from below ground. Only those hiding on the higher floors and rooftops of buildings survive, but they are left stranded, without any resources. Wanting to check that their daughter remains safe in her “bubble”, Mathieu and Anna will have to face the fog.”
The Man Who Killed Hitler And Then Bigfoot
Director: Robert Krzykowski Writer: Robert Krzykowski Cast: Sam Elliott, Caitlin FitzGerald, Ron Livingston, Aidan Turner
‘The year is 1987. Calvin Barr (a too-great-for-words Sam Elliott) is not a violent man. But he is more than capable of violence if sufficiently provoked. What many don’t realize about the thoughtful, elderly bloke regularly seen at the neighbourhood tavern is that he’s a legendary WW2 veteran who many years ago assassinated Adolf Hitler, an incredible secret that he’s frustratingly unable to share. One day, just as he’s coming to terms with rounding out his life, Calvin gets a visit from the FBI and the RCMP. They know what he’s done, and what he can be capable of. They have a mission for him. After discovering that it harbours a disease capable of eradicating humanity… they need him to take out Bigfoot.”
