Former Sheriff Reveals What's Behind Los Angeles' Homelessness | Alex Villanueva
“We achieved incredible amount of progress in four years. But the progress is threatening to a corrupt administration. That's why I'm now sitting here as a former Sheriff, not the current."
Siyamak sits down with former Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva who managed to clean up Venice Beach. Today he will give us his insight or perspective on the difficulties with cleaning up homelessness and why he's not giving up.
Increasingly, we have to worry about elected sheriffs in some of the more rural counties of California who are veering into far-right extremism and who have the power to implement their worldview with little pushback.
Some of these are so-called constitutional sheriffs who adhere to the misguided idea that they have king-like powers in their counties. They believe that the U.S. Constitution, which never mentions sheriffs, gives them the right not just to enforce law, but to decide what the law is — with the ability to override federal authorities.
Though that sounds absurd, constitutional sheriffs have formed their own national organization (founded by a sheriff who was also a member of the Oath Keepers). The organization does not publish its membership list, but it has become a darling of far-right groups that see these sheriffs as a pathway to implementing a Christian, white-nationalist agenda.

Any queer books like or similar to the Percy Jackson/Camp half-blood books?
Try Cameron Battle and the Hidden Kingdoms by Jamar J. Perry, Zachary Ying and the Dragon Emperor by Xiran Jay Zhao, and Battle Dragons by Alex London, and keep the upcoming Juniper Harvey and the Vanishing Kingdom by Nina Varela and Lulu Sinagtala and the Tagalog Gods by Gail D. Villanueva on your radar!
ETA: I'm assuming you know The Trials of Apollo is queer, but if not, definitely start with those!
if you don’t mind my being nosy, can i ask who would be in your runner up category for your favorite female characters series? like characters you really like or maybe even love but are edged out by someone else for favorite status.
i tried to include as many females as possible but i guess the ones i like a lot but didn't include would be:
Tiempo aquí y Particular me conmovieron mucho.

I guess depending on how sometimes cruel police can be in America i somehow undesired the anger towards them (still not fair to shut in all of them for the cruelt of a bad bunch) (I remember and am aware of the George floyde injustice)
but I’m seriously curious do you believe police don’t die protecting people? Because that’s incredible naivety especially for someone who’s a grown adult.
youre an idiot if you think the cops are anything but a modern gang that formed out of slave catchers (that telltale star shape you spit shine so well!) that do nothing. even when u need help theyll just bully u then take a report and not help u. if ur a person of color theres a high chance u also get arrested or shot
about 15 or so years ago a supreme court decision ruled that cops acc DONT have to protect OR serve u after they were sued for ✨️doing nothing✨️ in an emergency (sound familiar, uvale?)
they have QUOTAS for traffic stops and arrests. yanno, even if not that many ppl are committing crimes.
they kill with impunity and then rarely get a slap on the wrist for it. all cops ARE bastards bc its a racist system that protects its most violent <3 alex villanueva is on the other line
Hello! First of all I wanted to say thank you so much for all your help. I’ve been following for years and I can’t thank y’all enough for all the help and advice. Would I please be able to get some FC help for a Ryan Guzman replacement? Love Eddie Diaz (911), don’t like Ryan at all. I’m interested in writing that character but don’t want to use Ryan as the fc, thank you!!!!

More than 90% of the nation’s sheriffs are white men, a statistic reflected in California, and the constitutionally minded ones seem to share an unwavering commitment to cowboy hats and cowboy attitudes, just like Villanueva.
Of course, “patriots” love them, macho shtick and all. During the pandemic, many sheriffs who have espoused constitutional leanings, including Riverside County’s Chad Bianco and more than a handful in Northern California counties including Del Norte, Shasta and Siskiyou, refused to enforce COVID-19 mask mandates, much less public health advice for their deputies to get vaccinated.
Others have voiced support for the Jan. 6 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol, indulged in baseless claims of election fraud, voiced strong anti-immigrant views and created a “resolution” opposing any kind of registration for guns.
Why Sheriff Alex Villanueva acts above the law in L.A. County
Fellow LA friends, friendly reminder that Alex Villanueva is running for re election as county sheriff on Tuesday.
Friendly reminder that this is the same person who as sheriff
-Got angry that the independent watchdog agency specifically assigned to ensure The Sheriff's Department Isn't Doing Any Shady Shit would dare to try and access sheriff's department personnel files to confirm this
-And then proceeded to retaliate against them for it by launching a criminal investigation into their agency because How Dare You Try To Question What I Do Or Potentially Stop Me. That Sounds Suspicious. Trying To Hamper Law Enforcement? Sounds Like Something A Criminal Would Want To Do.
-Momentarily overlooking the fact that this does indeed sound very much like the actions of a man Doing Some Shady Shit, that is a TERRIFYING fucking precedent to set. Anyone who tells the sheriff 'You can't do whatever you want' gets the sheriff's department set on them?
-This is also the same dude who, upon being elected back in 2018
-Fired the department's constitutional policing advisors (the people in charge of evaluating disciplinary cases, the ones who say 'No, based on your conduct you cannot be trusted in law enforcement, gtfo')
-Promptly began attempting to re-instate his close personal friend and campaign worker, Caren Carl Mandoyan, as a deputy.
-(Why was this friend originally discharged, you may ask?)
-(Allegations of domestic abuse, stalking, and spying on his ex-girlfriend.)
-(Y'know.)
-(The sort of thing the constitutional policing advisors- that Villanueva fired- would've said disqualified him from being reinstated to law enforcement.)
-Was given an order from the county telling him 'No, you may not reinstate your friends just because you feel like it, what's the matter with you?? Tell Mandoyan to turn in his badge and gun.'
-Decided he didn't feel like paying attention to orders he didn't like, and completely ignored it.
-Leading the County Controller to come down to the office himself and personally hand over the order, so the Villanueva couldn't pretend he'd never received it anymore
-Proceeded to throw a shitfit, and began a legal battle that lasted until September of 2020 and only ended when a judge ruled that based on the evidence, Mandoyan had indeed done what he was accused of doing, and had absolutely no business being allowed back into the sheriff's department.
-Blocked efforts to examine his handling of the leaked photos of the Kobe Bryant crash
-Failed on multiple occasions to comply with a subpoena compelling evidence in the Bryant investigation
-Has done absolutely nothing about the existence of deputy gangs in the sheriff's department besides denying they exist
