I started reading the Mabinogion, since until now I’ve only really been familiar with it through retellings, and that one uni seminar on Culhwch and Olwen.

I really hope someone has done some sort of literary study on the amount of pig symbolism in these stories. They’re absolutely everywhere. Pigs gifted to humans by the Lord of Annwn, white Otherworldly boars that lead hunters to mysterious towers in the forest, winning the fair maiden’s hand by hunting the giant transmogrified boar, heroes born in pig-pens*... it goes on and on. We know pigs and boars were definitely a big thing for the Celts - they’re everywhere in the archaeology, and in the Irish myths too - so this is one of those aspects where you really do feel like you’re seeing a piece of pure unfiltered pre-Christian symbolism shining through.

*I think I see the inspiration for Taran Assistant Pig-Keeper just peeking over Culhwch’s shoulder! There are definitely several places so far where I’ve gone, “Ooohh, so that’s where Lloyd Alexander got that!” None more so than the story of Branwen, which features the cauldron that can bring dead warriors back to life, and which is destroyed when the dickish guy redeems himself by throwing himself alive into it, causing it to shatter. At that point I was like *Leonardo DiCaprio pointing meme* XD

Also interesting is the Otherworldly hunter Arawn, who appears to Pwyll complete with hunting-horn and his pack of mystical hounds. Presumably an old pre-Christian god of the wild, like Cernunnos - or, from a Tolkien fan perspective, Oromë, Vala of the hunt. And lo! Tolkien Gateway informs me that the Sindarin form of Oromë’s name is Araw. :D

And speaking of Sindarin, I have the strongest suspicion that Tolkien’s word annûn for “west/sunset” (see Henneth Annûn, etc.) must come from Annwn, the Otherworld, given the link between the west and the Otherworldly realms in Celtic mythology.

I’m finding it so fascinating, on so many levels!

104: THE NEXUS EVENT

Non-spoiler-free recap and review of the fourth episode of LOKI, which airs every Wednesday on Disney+.

RECAP

As Loki and Sylvie watch the world around them slowly but surely fall into complete destruction and collapse, the TVA is scrambling to locate the two and recapture them. Ravonna Renslayer especially is desperate to have the two variants located, being put under pressure by the Time Keepers. It is also revealed that is was Renslayer herself who was the one to pluck Sylvie from the time line and declare her a variant -- when Sylvie was merely a child, still on Asgard. It is also from Renslayer that Sylvie subsequently escapes and, as she reveals to Loki, has been on the run and in hiding ever since, growing up in apocalypses which were the only place her mere presence did not cause any nexus events.

Sharing a heartfelt moment as Sylvie recounts her life, she and Loki create enough chaos to spark a nexus event even within an ongoing apocalypse, allowing the TVA to locate and recapture them. Once captured, they are separated, with Renslayer forbidding anyone to interrogate Sylvie, while Mobius has Loki thrown in a time-loop -- where he is repeatedly threatened and beaten by LADY SIF (JAIMIE ALEXANDER) in a memory from Loki's earlier life on Asgard, where he as a joke cut off Sif's hair. After finally admitting that he played jokes out of loneliness and a desperate need for attention, Mobius retrieves Loki from the time-loop and takes him back to one of the TVA's interrogation rooms.

Loki tries to make Mobius understand that everything about the TVA is a lie -- as Sylvie has told him -- but Mobius does not trust him. He baits him into revealing what caused the nexus event on Lamentis-1 by telling him Sylvie has been disintegrated, and gets Loki to admit that he cares for her. Accusing him of such narcissism that he fell in love with himself, Mobius closes the case and has Loki returned to the time-loop.

Despite his distrust in Loki, Mobius questions Renslayer about what had happened to C-20 and her intentions behind not letting him talk to Sylvie, and eventually steals her TemPad to investigate the matter further. He learns that C-20 confirmed what Loki had tried to tell him: everyone at the TVA is a Variant, plucked from the timeline and brainwashed to serve the Time Keepers. Returning to Loki's time-loop he admits that Loki was right and wants to help him, but they are quickly found out by Renslayer, and she disintegrates Mobius.

Meanwhile, Hunter B-15, despite Renslayer's orders, went to see Sylvie and took her back to the apocalypse they had found her in. Questioning her about her powers, B-15 reveals that she, too, had been having memories of another life since Sylvie had controlled her. Sylvie shows her the memories again, effectively gaining B-15 as an ally.

Following the disintegration of Mobius, Renslayer takes Loki and Sylvie to see the Time Keepers who wish to witness their destruction. However, once in their chambers, Loki and Sylvie are freed from their constraints by B-15 and a fight between them and the TVA ensue. Gaining the advantage, Loki and Sylvie eventually find themselves free of any enemies, and Sylvie attacks one of the Time Keepers with her sword. The Time Keeper is beheaded and, as the head falls to their feet, Loki and Sylvie realise that these three beings are merely robotic avatars and not the real Time Keepers.

Without any way to destroy the Time Keepers and the TVA, Sylvie is lost. Loki, reminiscent of their moment on Lamentis-1 and Mobius' accusation of romantic feelings between the two, tries to communicate to Sylvie whatever it is he is feeling, but before he can make her understand, he is disintegrated by Renslayer who turns out to be alive, still.

The mid-credit scene reveals that Loki did, in fact, not die, but finds himself in another realm where he is greeted by various other incarnations of himself. Prominently among them: CLASSIC LOKI (RICHARD E. GRANT), KID LOKI (JACK VEAL), and BOASTFUL LOKI (DEOBIA OPAREI).

FAVOURITE MOMENTS

Loki is back in Mobius' presence and we are immediately back to bantering like an old married couple and I very much appreciated that. These two have such a lovely dynamic, I adore it. Never thought I would say that, but I really do. I love Owen Wilson in this role very much and he and Tom have such great chemistry.

I also really liked Hunter B-15 taking Sylvie back to the apocalypse they had found her in, and asks her about C-20 and the memories the both of them have lived while Sylvie controlled them. Her chocked back sob and then the "I looked happy" was just so nicely done. I was very happy to see that B-15 was immediately ready to team up with Sylvie and drop the TVA at a moment's notice.

The same goes for Mobius. I loved that, despite Loki's betrayal and the fact that he was so set in not wanting to trust him again, Mobius still couldn't shake the feeling that Loki's comment was more than just a quip and went to investigate. He is not just a mindless follower of orders and I love that very much about him.

FAVOURITE CHARACTER(S)

My main man Loki, always and forever. I adore this version of Loki so much. He is so much fun! I love that we get this actually, truly mischievous Loki, this chaotic mess. He isn't brooding and full of evil plans. No! He wants shenanigans and fun. I love it. And I love that we get to see more of his vulnerable side too.

But also, Mobius! My man! He's back!!! If this man doesn't get to ride a jet ski at least once I will be very upset. I will also be very upset if he is actually gone now. (Cannot believe I am saying this about an Owen Wilson character. This is new. Good on you, Owen, good on you.)

QUESTIONS, CURIOSITIES

Less a question and more a demand: if the mid-credit scene means Loki exists somewhere after being disintegrated, Mobius better be alive somewhere. I want that lad back, whole and in one piece. You hear me, Marvel? Otherwise you might have yourself another CoulsonLives on your hand, you just watch.

I've already seen a bunch of reactions to the whole Loki/Sylvie thing and most either go with happily shipping along, or being very against this concept out of some sort of incestuous concerns. And I feel like, am I the only one who watched that scene as neither romantic nor incestuous as such, but more as Loki being very confused?

Apart from Frigga, and possibly, to some degree and especially earlier in life, the brotherly love of Thor, I don't think Loki has ever felt love. And for the first time there is someone who not just understands him completely, but also accepts him exactly as he is. Especially following their conversation about love in 103, I think what was between Sylvie and Loki on Lamentis-1 that caused the nexus event, and makes Mobius accuse Loki of being in love with her, is not a romantic sense of love, but in a way a certain self-acceptance?

I'm sure Loki has some kinds of feelings but he doesn't know what they are or how to categorise them. And he is very confused about liking Sylvie and caring that she is alright. But I don't think he would have understood it as romantic love without Mobius' accusation of it. I don't think it's narcissism either. What I saw, was a glimmer of Loki realising that he can love himself, he can accept himself. If Sylvie, who is him, understands and accepts him, then so can he. But yeah, I'm curious to see where they're gonna go with this, certainly.

OVERALL IMPRESSION

Generally, this episode was absolutely amazing. Every week I keep finding myself becoming the shocked Pikachu meme while watching the episode, but this week especially. I can't wait to see what next week brings, and I hope very much that we find out Mobius is, in fact, still alive somewhere.

F / THE LONGEST YOU’VE BEEN IN A FANDOM hhhhhh. this question has multiple potential answers. usually i stay active in a fandom anywhere from a few months to a few years. i'm going to invoke the gift of prophecy i apparently used to predict the destiel confession and say x-men, because it will take me about a decade to write my 90 cherik ideas. but, if the future doesn't count:

"longest" as in the most amount of time has passed between getting into it and now, and i've never renounced it: every now and then i still miss my very first fandom, which was digimon frontier!

"longest" as in the most amount of time spent, total, being active in a fandom: probably supernatural? my stints in spn fandom tend to be brief but very intense, and i've had three of those periods in the last decade, so altogether that probably adds up to a few years, though not consecutively. 😂 i've been mainly a lurker, mainly a meta-writer, and mainly a fic writer at various times, then i disappear for a few months and lose track of canon and friends, swallowed up by schoolwork, but i always come back (appropriately). if i'm not careful i might start making graphics in the wake of the supernatural renaissance.

"longest" as in the longest time i was actively creating content for a fandom, even if i was writing other things simultaneously: probably james bond, writing from october 2018 to march 2020! near the end there i was slipping into x-men fandom, and i feel like in 2019 i had brief flirtations with a few other fandoms, but for over a year the 00q slack chat was my fandom home. 💛 if you're interested in james bond fandom, @mi6-cafe is one of the most centralized, friendly, and well-organized environments i've ever been in.

OC as a child meme

I’ve had this one in my drafts for a while after I stole it from a much more interesting blog who didn’t tag me and since I have a paper due tomorrow that I haven’t worked on at all it seemed like the perfect time to share it

Who named them/Significance of their name: Sasha has no real meaning on its own. I know in russian it’s the short form of Alexander, but I wasn’t thinking of that when I named Sasha. His mom just picked the name because it sounded nice and rolled easy off the tongue, she wanted something original for her only son.

Home they grew up in: He grew up in the Lavellan clan, always moving around. The clan was both his family and his home.  

Relationship with parents: Pretty close. His parents had pretty mellow, gentle personalities, and loved him above all and he loved them just as much. They were a very tight knit little family-his mother Zulema was a healer, but when she fell ill she couldn’t live for long and died when Sasha was around 12. Sasha’s dad, Hassan, didn’t take his wife’s passing too well and started withering away slowly and finally died himself quietly when Sasha was 15. Sasha still misses both of them and thinks of them constantly.

Three Words to describe them as a child: Mischievous, sly, hyperactive

Childhood friend(s): He and the other kids of the clan grew together and were more family than friends, but if he had to call someone his best friend it’d be Sol, the First of the clan, who was a year older than him and got into as much trouble as he did. She was very lonely because of her status, and like Sasha she was unable to stay still for a whole minute and both of them got into trouble a lot, bothering the halla, accidentally setting things on fire and generally making sure to annoy the hell out of the Keeper. 

Favorite Toy: Sasha’s dad Hassan was a carpenter and often made small trinkets and toys to sell when the clan camped near a human city, so Sasha had the fortune of seeing many cool toys. His favourite as a kid was a small articulated wooden halla his dad carved for his 6th birthday. Sol sent it to him when he got married to Cullen and he keeps it as a treasure in Skyhold.

Childhood Trauma?: The first time he and Sol had a run in with humans, when he was 10 and she was 11 years old. They were accompanying one of the clan’s hunters to sell some pelts in the city, and a human man started insulting the hunter and they almost started a fight-fortunately, another of the clan’s hunters saw the scene and managed to defuse the situation and keep the children safe. After that, Sasha realized how dangerous humans were-and how easily they believed crap if you knew how to use words. 

Hobbies: Sasha’s mom Zulema wasn’t a mage but nobody knew plants and remedies better than she did, so she was the clan’s healer and her potions sold like hot bread even in human cities. When Sasha wasn’t busy throwing pinecones at aravels or giving wine to the halla to see what happened, he spent a lot of time with his mom. Being able to use his hands in simple activities like separating roots and leaves from plants and chopping up ingredients while actually learning something was a great way to keep him busy and out of trouble, that’s why he still takes great pleasure in making the potions he consumes himself.

Childhood fear(s): Elfroot, as funny as you might find it. Sasha has a very grave elfroot allergy and he discovered it when he was 6 years old. His mother almost gave him a potion with elfroot in it to alleviate his cough-he almost died as a result, but the Keeper fortunately intervened fast enough to help his mother save his life. Since then he has kept a very prudent distance from the plant in question.

Quirks: Sasha is left handed, like his mom was, but taught himself to write and use his right hand imitating his right handed dad when he was around 12 years old. He is dyslexic though, so his friend Sol, who is also dyslexic, makes fun of him saying he can now write wrong with both hands.

Marvel’s Loki Episode 4: MCU Easter Eggs and References

“Marvel, you’ve done it again!”

OK, but seriously…this is the best episode of Loki yet, and one of the best examples of the MCU’s Disney+ TV strategy full stop. Plenty of drama and action, to be sure, but also packed with surprises, some of which are very much things that Marvel Comics and MCU fans will be excited about, and others a little more subtle.

Here’s all the good stuff we’ve found in Loki episode 4 so far. If you spot anything we missed, let us know in the comments!

Valkyrie

Young Sylvie (young Lady Loki? What’s the correct nomenclature here?) is playing with her toys, and is reenacting (or imagining) a legendary battle involving one of the Valkyrie.

The Origin of Sylvie

This episode makes it pretty clear that Sylvie is 100% a Loki, and had at least part of a childhood on Asgard.

There are some subtle touches with how we see her booked into the TVA. The pile of papers indicating “everything you’ve ever said” is much smaller than the one presented to Loki in episode one. The camera lingers on the scorched floor to indicate the real danger (and the one a child would feel) of that checkpoint disintegrating you, etc.

Considering the extremely traumatic and messed up way the TVA just stormed in and took Sylvie away, it pretty much explains her habit of never wanting to sit with her back to doors.

Not Natasha!

Hey, remember when the trailers for this show were hitting and everyone (including us) thought there was a shot of Loki talking to Black Widow’s soul on Vormir? Whoops! Turns out that was just Loki and Sylvie on Lamentis-1 after all!

Blade is Coming to the MCU

Mobius talks up all the different types of beings that they’ve dealt with, including “Kree, Titans, and vampires.” This is the first confirmation of vampires existing in the MCU, right? Blade reboot, here we come!

The Eternals Connection

When Mobius mentions “Titans” he isn’t talking about the team of DC heroes. Instead, the Marvel Titans are Eternals who primarily inhabit (wait for it) Titan, the homeworld of Thanos.

Kree

Any self-respecting MCU and Captain Marvel fan knows who the Kree are at this point, of course. But remember that we also saw a member of their rival species, a Skrull, being booked into the TVA in the first episode. The TVA’s jurisdiction is truly boundless.

Lady Sif

Loki is tortured by the (justifiably) abusive words and punches of Lady Sif, as played by Jaimie Alexander. Previously, Sif was quietly forgotten due to her notable lack of appearance in Thor: Ragnarok and the lack of any reference to her since then. In real life, it was because Alexander was busy with her TV show Blindspot. 

As for the in-story reason, according to Kevin Feige, the official explanation is that after her appearances on Agents of SHIELD, Sif was banished from Asgard by Loki (disguised as Odin) in fear that she could expose his ruse to the rest of the realm. She was one of Thanos’ victims during the big snap, but was brought back five years later.

Interestingly, this encounter with Sif seems to be referencing a story from Norse mythology, although in a slightly skewed fashion. Here, Sif is annoyed with Loki for cutting her hair without her permission. But in Norse mythology (and at least one Marvel Comics story), Loki was the reason that Sif’s hair was black and not blonde, having magically changed it while she slept as a joke.

The Time-Keepers are Fake!

In the first Avengers movie, Nick Fury compared Loki to the Wicked Witch of the West from Wizard of Oz, giving us the famous, “I understood that reference!” Captain America meme. This episode keeps the Loki/Wizard of Oz connection going with the way the Timekeepers are merely a fake identity meant to scare and grandstand. I guess we’ll have to wait to see who’s really behind the curtain, though.

Considering the way they’re laid out and dressed, the Timekeepers are most definitely supposed to be reminiscent of the Three Most Important People in the World, the futuristic utopian rulers who set things in motion in Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure to keep the correct timeline intact.

Sylvie is held in Time Theater 47. The number 47 has a strangely deep connection to science fiction. The number occurs frequently in Star Trek: The Next Generation. This is because writer Joe Menosky attended Pomona College, where 47 is something of a meme, due to two students in the ‘60s researching whether the number appears more frequently than others. The nameless protagonist of the Hitman videogame series is also named Agent 47.

The Variant Lokis and the Post-Credits Scene

Loki wakes up and we get an homage to that famed shot in Avengers when Loki finds himself on the ground, surrounded by hostile heroes. Except this time they are Lokis. And…is that a crumbling Avengers tower we see in the background.

Of all the variant Lokis, the most significant of these is…

Kid Loki

Kid Loki made his first appearance in Thor #617 in 2010. Feeling he had hit a dead end as the God of Mischief and was too distrusted for his schemes to matter, Loki set up his own death in the event Siege, where he was killed by the Void. He was reborn as his child self, from back when he was beloved and still relatively innocent. While mischievous, Kid Loki tried to break the chains of what his previous self had become and used his powers to help Asgard and his brother. By the time he proved himself heroic, the soul of the previous Loki was able to overtake his body and ride on his reputation.

The conclusion of that story suggested that the status quo wouldn’t allow for a heroic Loki for too long, but instead of going full-on evil again, the new form of Loki instead fell into bouts of guilt over his actions. This led to Kid Loki joining the Young Avengers and eventually aging himself up to a young adult.

So hey, Disney+ shows are three-for-three on introducing Young Avengers characters!

Alligator Loki

The alligator Loki doesn’t exactly come from the comics, but it does seem to be a nod to the incident where Loki transformed Thor into a frog during the Walt Simonson run of the Thor comics. While the adventure was short lived, Frog Thor was such a beloved concept that it’s been revisited various times, including making it a separate character (real name Simon Walterson, because of course).

Classic Loki

Richard E. Grant makes an absolutely perfect comics-accurate Loki. Not only is the costume a perfect version of the way the character was portrayed in the pages of Marvel Comics for decades, where Loki was far more evil than MCU fans might be used to and…also kind of looked like Richard E. Grant now that we think about it.

Also, folks who have been rightly noting the Doctor Who parallels on this show will also note Grant has played the Doctor in a couple of forms in his time, as well.

“Boastful Loki”

We don’t know who that cool looking armored Loki wielding what looks like Mjolnir is exactly, but he’s credited as “Boastful Loki.” He sounds fun.

Miscellaneous Time Variants

Even though they’ve been around since the first episode, the “So… you’re a variant,” posters on the desk in the end credits certainly hits differently, doesn’t it?

The Moonlighting energy that we were getting last week with Sylvie and Loki seems to have been transferred this week to Loki and Mobius. Not that we’re complaining.

When Loki wakes up during the post-credits scene, he wonders whether he has arrived in hell. But of course, the closed captioning reveals that Loki is speaking of Hel, the Norse underworld overseen by the goddess Hel.

Hamilton Hogwarts Au

Okay take 2 so like I’ve never seen or even read anything revolving around the Wizarding world in America because honestly it’s cool but it never really caught my eye anyways so all this will be taking place in Hogwarts

•Shouldn’t they go to the American Wizarding School? You ask

•How would them being in Hogwarts make sense? You ask

•FOREIGN EXCHANGE STUDENT PROGRAM BROS

•I’m pretty sure there would be some kind of program especially if they want to get more involved with foreign Wizarding cultures and governments. Because honestly there has to be some sort of foreign policy in Wizarding government

•Alex, Aaron, Schuyler Sisters, Herc, John, James, and Thomas are all American exchange students from ilvermorny

•Lafayette is French exchange student from Beauxbatons

• Alex, Angelica, and John were all placed in Gryffindor

•Eliza and Aaron were placed in Ravenclaw

•James and Thomas were placed in Slytherin

• I was debating in placing Alexander in slytherin since his character seems to revolve around doing everything he can to make sure he himself makes it ahead and has a legacy but then I remembered that he as a person is very prideful and impulsive which ultimately is his fatal flaw. He makes a legacy and he makes it ahead it causes him his marriage, his firstborn, and his good name. Which I thought was very gryffindor of him.

•Peggy, Herc, and Lafayette were placed in Hufflepuff

•The Schuyler Sister’s come from a well known Wizard family that came from Europe to America during the revolutionary war

•John is a half blood while Herc is a muggleborn

•John is really into social justice for the Wizarding world and when he meets Herc he’s really interested to learn about the no-maj social justice

•Lafayette is a pure-blood family that are known to be “muggle lovers” which is why his name sake is well known in muggle history

•Alexander and Thomas still hate each other but they’re both friends with everyone else

•Alexander and Aaron come from the same (wizard) foster home

•Alex is a half-blood with a pure-blood name Hamilton which a very old wizard family (but it’s more like a lower class wizard family like the Weasleys) so he was immediately placed in a foster home where the care taker was a wizard

•Alexander’s mother was Puerto Rican

•Him and John have conversations in Spanish sometimes

•Burr is a muggleborn, his parents died when he was 9 and his accidental magic started up soon after (he turned a kid’s, who was bullying him, into a spider. The kid bit into said spider.)

•the American magical government quickly moved him into a different foster home

•Him and Alex quickly became frienemies and they got their letters to ilvermorny

•when they get to Hogwarts they learn the different slang that their European counterparts have

•"WTF Muggle sounds way cooler than no-maj!!!!!“

•Alexander is now determined to replace no-maj with muggle

•Burr gets picked on for being a muggleborn a lot by closed minded pure-bloods and Alexander saw this one time and he was ABOUT TO CUT A BITCH when Eliza came in out of no where and gave them a piece of her mind with really great points and historical figures that so happened to be “mud bloods”

•Alexander fell in love with her there and then

• Alexander: “I’m going to marry her one day.”

•Hamsquad + Burr: “You have to talk to her first.” “Angelica will rip off your dick before you have the chance.” “I wish you the best of luck, mom ami.” “5 sickles that he embarrasses himself on the first date.”

•They all make a bet that he either bombs the date really bad or he does cha cha real smooth

•Lafayette wins by betting that “Alex makes a fool of himself but ultimately wins Eliza’s heart.”

•He knew he was going to win because he’s the only one out of the betting table to know that Eliza has had a huge crush on him since the first time she laid eyes on him

•because him and Peggy have gossip nights ever once in a while to talk shit about other people

•the Hamsquad start up the first muggle world club where kids can learn about muggles and their way of living to help stop prejudice against them

•Herc teaches kids how to sew by hand since so many of them use magic to help them with that
