On July 4 1862 Charles Lutwidge Dodgson (pen name Lewis Carroll) took the three Liddell sisters, Lorina, Alice and Edith, on a boat ride along the River Thames. On the bank at Godstow he told the story of Alice’s Adventures Underground (later renamed Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland) for the first time.

161 years later this book, and its sequel Through The Looking Glass, and What Alice Found There, have had an indelible mark on our culture. A classic of children’s literature, it has never gone out of print. It has been translated into 174 languages, adapted into dozens of films (the first of which was made in 1903) and inspired countless works of art. Its nonsensical whimsy and celebration of childhood is beloved by children and adults everywhere.

Out of any story I’ve read, Alice has had the most profound impact on me. I am forever grateful to the man who told it and then wrote it down, the man who captured its magic with his illustrations, and - above all- the little girl who inspired it.

“Thus grew the tale of Wonderland: thus slowly, one by one, its quaint events were hammered out and now the tale is done, and home we steer, a merry crew, beneath the setting sun. Alice! A childish story take, and, with a gentle hand, lay it where Childhood’s dreams are twined in Memory’s mystic band. Like pilgrim’s wither’d wreath of flowers pluck’d in far off land.” - All in the Golden Afternoon, Lewis Carroll

I"m a a fan of Wonderland too and I'm wondering if you have a top 3 or so of film adaptation. The 1933 one is a creepy but enjoyable. The 1999 one is so....unnerving but I can't look away? And Alice 1988 is just...it's like a student film project.
Gasp!! It’s so hard to pick a top three.. in fact I’ve been trying to put together a playlist of all the Alice in Wonderland adaptations I can find on YouTube for free hehe..
My top pick has to be Disney’s Alice in Wonderland, it’s been a favorite since childhood. I love old Disney but Alice always felt like a special treat, it makes me feel like Christmas Day.
Next I’d have to say 1903, there is pure magic in that film…. a very beautiful feeling. So much time has passed and humans still bond over the same fairytales..
It’s so hard to pick a third .. perhaps 1933. I absolutely adore the visuals, the set n costumes n music are all just perfectly strange and Charlotte Henry plays such a lovely Alice. I would love to own it on dvd !
I love seeing how all the different adaptations interpret the characters and create their own beautiful wonderlands.. I’m a bigger fan of the older ones because I’m enchanted by the practical effects :] + I reallllyyyy loved the use of taxidermy in Alice 1988, I thought that it was a very unique portrayal of the story

Wanderland [Welcome Home A. U.]: "Girl and Boy"
========== ========== ========== ========== ==========
---------- ---------- ---------- ---------- ---------- ---------- ----------
========== ========== ========== ========== ==========
"Welp, I made an A. U. called 'Wanderland' and the reason why it has the letter 'A'….It's because children doesn't know how to spell Wonderland right. Anyway, This A.U. was inspired by Among The Sleep, Coraline, Alice In Wonderland, Alice In Nightmareland: Alice's Madness, Dark Deception, Little Nightmares, Sky: Children Of The Light….Bramble The Mountain and Undertale. The children would experience what it was like if they head outside, They would think it's a bright and colorful place where they could be happy etc….Clancy sees it differently which is something or someone he couldn’t ignore. The only reason why the children hadn't headed outside, It's because they're some adults and teenagers who disguise themselves as monsters….Which is pretty scary if you guys ask me. The children who died in 1903 to 1989 were inspired by Ed Edd N Eddy's Purgatory Theory and the children who became puppets were also inspired by Five Nights At Freddy's, Clancy on the other hand is not a teenager or a real person….He's just an imaginary friend that Girl and Boy think if they met a teenager. They did, But the truth is that he’s a guardian angel who seeks and protects the children….Sadly there are no children in sight. Luckily he's able to protect them because he is the light of their lives, Although it's not enough to protect them….Because the outside world is full of dark and scary places that can destroy the light easily. Clancy's not forcing them to stay, He doesn't want to allow them to enter the real outside….He's only doing this because they have the weakest will and they can't escape it or fight it. Another word by saying, They are going to be eaten alive and no one's there to save them until there’s another light that shines on them….Which is the place called Welcome Home and it's the only place that’s bright and beautiful. But once it gets dark, There are some strange things that the puppets are scared of or even show to these poor children what they look like….If they will also get affected in a different way. There’s the creator of this show who's crueler than the rest of the monsters, He's the puppet master and a true monster….Wally and everybody else are the children who died and they are suffering due to the creator who made them. The only way to free these poor children is to follow their light, Which is how they died and find the memories of who they used to be….But the crueler creator can’t allow the children to find out why. The dead children, Now called 'The Rainbow Souls'….Can't leave the other side of the puppet world. They are stuck souls, Force to stay here because the light is the only place where children can stay and be true to themselves….Most likely however. Those children who died just wanted everyone to be safe, The souls of the dead children think that their parents left the new victims to die to suffer the same fate as them….But either way they are stuck in their puppet forms. Another thing about them, If one of them breaks characters….The creator will exactly hurt them and not let Girl or Boy know the truth about them. Puppets will see dead children who what they used to be will be staring at them, They'll scream to tell them to leave the neighborhood alone….But they will never let them go and not after what they did to themselves. The main characters….Which are Wally, Sally, Julie, Frank, Eddie, Barnaby, Howdy and Poppy are the rainbow souls who died in 1903 - 1989. Home represents the creator of Welcome Home, Where he did died alone in his house….Other puppets are just puppets as background characters. As for the monsters, They're are the tallest and biggest creature than humans and puppets….They're here come after the children whoever see the light or not because they live in the world that's black or white with no colors surrounding them. Oh and the only reason why Girl and Boy are not allow to open their eyes, It's because if they see something 'terrible'….They'll be traumatize and never forget what they saw. So, What do you guys think…?"

The Importance of the Early Years of Cinema - Julia Merolle
Julia Merolle
A lot of people don’t realize how important the year 1896 is. 1896 impacts our lives to this day as we watch, consume and repeat something that we are all familiar with: movies. The first movie that was ever made was by the Lumière Brothers, titled “The Arrival of a train at La Ciotat Station”. This film is about 45 seconds long with no cuts, camera movements or anything of that sort. There is even a myth about this film that says that because people had never seen movies before, they believed that a real train was coming at them inside of the theater, jumping out of their seats and screaming. Watching this today, I don’t know if I believe that but it is still something that is funny to think about. Now, while the Lumières are the ones who created the first film, there are a few other names who created the most proactive films that brought us to where we are today in the film industry. George Méliès, creator of “A Trip to the Moon” (1902), Edwin S. Porter, creator of “The Great Train Robbery” (1903), Cecil Hepworth, director of “Alice in Wonderland” (1903), and other names such as Thomas Edison and Thorold Dickinson.
Early cinema is something that is very important when discussing film in general, since it is the start of the film industry and cinema as a whole. One peer quotes Huhtamo and describes their analysis of a quote which states, “According to Huhtamo, ‘As gateways to displaying and exchanging information, screens are situated in the liminal zone between the material and the immaterial, the real and the virtual’ (34). In other words, screen technologies allow the viewer to transport to another place and be entertained and informed by the experience. Similar to current technologies, this phenomena can be observed with peepshow machines which let the viewer see the image once they put their eye against a small hole in a wooden box. In this way, peepshow machines capitalize on one’s curiosity to see what is in the box and be entranced by the image. Overall, early forms of entertainment such as peep shows relate to television in that both technologies are able to transport audiences and capture viewers’ interest.” This quote shows that viewers are literally transported into the experience that they are watching. This connects to the Lumiere Brother’s film, “The Arrival of a train at La Ciotat Station” once again because of the myth that the audience was jumping out of their seats in fear of the train, especially since they had never experienced anything like this before.

Another peer quote states, “One of the more interesting developments around the Magic Lantern was the swiftness of its adoption around the country, [...] Though this was prior to the advent of early cinema, the magical feeling of watching a projected display in a theater setting, either a church, school or town hall, was still captured by this early technological breakthrough. As Robert Marcus puts it, “This was cinema before the innovation of the movies. Large audiences enjoyed travelogues, religious presentations, scientific lectures, works of art, history and other topics of wide public interest” (58). The Magic Lanterns tapped into a very powerful aspect of the human psyche, which encompasses a desire for communal visual experiences. The cinema perfected this market a half-century later, but it is arguable that film would not have been developed in the same way without the early innovative work of the Magic Lantern.” This quote is important because it shows how widespread not only cinema was when it first came out, but how it affected other industries such as religions, schools, towns, etc. It also showed the valuableness of watching something together with other people together.

Lastly, this film clip is from “The Wizard of Oz” (1939) which is considered to be one of the most contemporary classic films ever made. The scene that is shown is when Dorothy, Toto, The Tin Man, Scarecrow, and The Cowardly Lion go to meet the wizard, and there is a projection that is used to show a falsified version of the wizard, unknowingly to them. This shows that even for 1939, the effects were ahead of its time and within the three decades from the first Lumière Brothers film, that people were not jumping out of their seats in fear anymore, because they were actually aware that it was film, not real life.
