Headcanon - King Somnus with Princess Aliqua

Probably out scouting the woods and surroundings for perfect hunting spots, where Somnus can teach his daughter how to hunt when time allows him. Of course riding on Somnus’ white Chocobo. Included the scars the use of the Ring leaves on Somnus’ body creeping up to his face.

Somnus usually did not cry – it was useless. The last times there had been tears in his eyes had been at the birth of Aliqua. And those had been from happiness. Now... now they were of defeat and fear.

He had just left the children’s rooms, trying to reassure them and answer their questions as well as he had been able to. But still avoiding answers to some. They sensed that something was wrong. Very wrong. And they were afraid and wary now.

They were innocent in this and Somnus felt like it was his fault they were in danger.

If anything happened to any of them, he could not go on.

That was his line. The border he could not ever cross.

Rubbing a hand over his face quickly when he heard steps, Somnus turned away and tried to hide the fact he had been crying. But Ardyn still knew him too well – and almost forced him to turn towards him.

But there was no ridicule or mockery in those golden eyes. There only was… empathy? And suddenly Somnus felt Ardyn’s hand on his face, wiping away at the damp trail of tears. It was almost a freeing feeling and Somnus closed his eyes shut, teeth clenched.

“I failed them… I failed all three of them. And I failed Aurora and Aera. I promised them they would always be safe, as long as I live… I failed them just like I failed you...”

“Hush now,” Ardyn whispered, brushing away a few more of those tears with the back of his fingers. It was a surreal feeling, seeing Somnus actually be brought to tears. How often Ardyn had thought on this scenario, imagining the satisfaction that would come along with it, his brother actually realizing the weight of his mistakes... 

There was none of that, though. 

Instead, there was only concern in it’s place, and a flicker of sadness at having to actually witness his younger sibling be resorted to such a state. 

“Your promise is not broken, for you have done all within your means. You cannot be held responsible for the selfishness of the gods.” Could anyone, truly? Ardyn had spent centuries musing over such things, himself. 

With a soft exhale, he reached to wrap an arm around Somnus, gently pulling him into an embrace. How long had it been since he had offered something so simple as a hug to him? So long that Ardyn couldn’t even remember it. 

“You cannot blame yourself, Somnus.” He laid his head against his brother’s and held him tightly, wanting to offer whatever reassurances that he could.

Headcanon: Somnus’ Children

Valerius Lucis Caelum & Aliqua Lucis Caelum 

Parents: Aurora & Somnus

Ages: in Somnus’ usual King-Verse they are by default 7 and 4 years old

Aurora was one of the first who joined in Somnus’ quest against the Daemons and became a Glaive of Light after Somnus became King. They fell in love and married, a year later Valerius was born. He became the designated heir and crown prince, loving to train with his Armiger, while Aliqua was born 3 years afterwards and showed great aptitude with magic.

Valerius has faint scars across his face from a beast’s attack when he was a toddler

both children are rather quiet when they are younger, following guests around silently and stalking them around the Citadel to see what they are up to

Aliqua becomes a talented huntress, much to Somnus’ pride, her chosen weapon later is a bow

Valerius prefers daggers and a spear

Somnus was 33 when Valerius was born and 36 at Aliqua’s birth

Somnus was incredibly protective of his children, especially after the incident that gave Valerius his scars

they only vaguely know about Ardyn, Somnus avoided questions about him

Somnus would have liked for his brother to meet his nephew and niece, but he of course considers Ardyn dead even before their births

Valerius inherited the throne from Somnus in his mid to late 20s, since Somnus died rather early from the effects the Ring and wielding the Lucii power had on his body
