Omg, you guys. So, one of my gardening clients had these funny little alliums pop up year before last, and I wasn't familiar and she liked them, so we left them. Small, kinda funky looking little dude, looks like chives except it has a bunch of bulbils instead of flowers.
I was just reading about foraging alliums, and what should I see? Our little friend! It's Allium vineale! And it's considered an invasive species on this continent. Not a major problem here, not even listed with the state noxious weed control board, but still!
I'm going to let her know and I'm also going to contact the weed control board and see if they're interested in knowing. I suspect not as we have much bigger problems, but what a surprise!

Been getting in to alliums lately and. How the fuck do you tell these apart. Like I can tell garlic from chives, but how do you tell allium vineale from bunching onions and those from onions?? What??

Hot And Dry Wildflower Walk, 6-4-23
Leucanthemum vulgare (Oxeye Daisy) on 6-4-23, #943-60. Hello, everyone! I hope this post finds you well. I decided to go for a wildflower walk on Sunday afternoon even though it was bright and sunny and the temperature was already almost 90° F. There was a nice breeze, so it wasn’t so bad. We haven’t had much rain and it seems many of the wildflowers I usually see are non-existent. Only the…

The magnolias will bloom... (bring the first non-leaf flavor of spring, unless you dig roots in which case I guess allium vineale runs through winter & spring)

Well, having consulted with my pillow and the internet, I have more.
Allium vineale is still very common across the whole of the South and South Midlands of England. So, it would have been easily found within reach of anywhere in Alfred's realm.
A study has been done on Alabama crow garlic that must have been introduced from the Old World. The oil has 5.2-6.5% of the non-sulphur compound p-vinylguaiacol. 99.3 % of garlic oils are sulphur compounds, 91.6% of A.v. oils. They have many similar sulphur compounds but different compounds in each are at the higher percentages.
p-Vinylguaiacol (related structurally to vanillin) contributes to the aroma of buckwheat and some wheat beers and has been described as "spicy powdery clove phenolic woody smoky balsamic amber". Phenols can be antibacterial, though I can't find any mention for this one yet. There are a lot of brewing research papers. Thymol and carvacrol are potent antibacterial and antivirals that are even active against norovirus. The vinyl part of the molecule is quite reactive, so it might be changed after days in the medicinal mixture.
Prabodh Satyal et al "The Chemical Compositions of the Volatile Oils of Garlic (Allium sativum) and Wild Garlic (Allium vineale)" foods (2017) 6:63 The journal is called "foods" and I am not sure how to do italics or bold with this.
DUDE that's so amazing! Your internet skills are amazing. Honestly I have nothing to add to this, but thank you so much for sharing what you found!

Nature Memo #1
I decided to go on a little adventure over the weekend since I had three days off (I generally work on the weekends and am almost always on-call for crisis situations). I picked up a new journal so that I could collect plant samples and press them. I've been intending to do this for way too long (2011) but have not gotten around to doing it until now.
I find nature to be mesmerizing and way too often taken for granted. Parks are great, and those with unpaved nature trails are even better. But even then, they are taken for granted.
In any event, below are the list of observations that I made. This is incomplete because I did not include the trees and shrubs that were observed. Of the 29 listed items below, 10 were ones that I had not previously recorded, so I'm pretty excited about that. The total number of living species (plants, insects, birds, reptiles, fungi, arachnids, mammals, fish, mollusks, amphibians, and other species) that I have recorded (as in, photographed, dated, and confirmed the species of) is now 276.
Plants observed (all pressed!)
Oxalis triangularis, False Shamrock
Narcissus poeticus, Poet’s Narcissus
Achillea millefolium, Common Yarrow
Muscari neglectum, Grape Hyacinth
Galium aparine, Catchweed Bedstraw
Stellaria media, Common Chickweed
Oxalis violacea, Violet Woodsorrel
Vinca minor, Lesser Periwinkle
Bowlesia incana, Hoary Bowlesia
Narcissus tazetta, Bunch-flowered Daffodil
Veronica persica, Bird’s-eye Speedwell
Valerianella locusta, Common Cornsalad
Allium vineale, Wild Garlic
Cardamine hirsuta, Hairy Bittercress
Ranunculus hispidus, Bristly Buttercup
Ornithogalum umbellatum, Common Star-of-Bethlehem
Houstonia pusilla, Tiny Bluet
Viola bicolor, American Field Pansy
Claytonia virginica, Virginia Spring Beauty
Insects observed
Camponotus pennsylvanicus, Black Carpenter Ant
Papilio rutulus, Western Tiger Swallowtail (Butterfly)
Coleomegilla maculata, Spotted Pink Ladybeetle
Polistes Carolina, Red Wasp
Eurema lisa, Little Yellow (Butterfly)
Celastrina ladon, Spring Azure (Butterfly)
Amphibians observed
Pseudacris crucifer, Spring Pepper (Frog)
Fungi observed
Trametes versicolor, Turkey-tail
Cladonia evansii, Evan’s Deer Moss
Arachnids observed
Oxyopes salticus, Striped Lynx Spider
Next step is to let the pressed plans dry, followed by labeling, dating, notes on GPS coordinates for each sample, as well as information on whether it it is edible, seasonal growth, and if I am feeling particularly brave I will attempt to draw them.
All of these samples were taken in Arkansas between Siloam Springs, Pea Ridge National Battlefield, and Bella Vista.

Onion / Garlic Grass
Wild onion and its magical (and mundane) uses.
Tumblr media
It's spring here in north america. All around you'll see curly shoots of "grass" popping up out of the ground. Upon closer inspection, they may look similar to chives. They technically are. This plant is an allium vineale, which is apart of the same family as garlic, onions, and chives. Allium vineale does have a toxic lookalike- but no fear. They're uncommon, and easy to tell apart. Real allium vineale will smell of garlic or onion. These curly little plants are edible, and very useful in magic.
Properties of onion and garlic which are applicable to this plant:
All three are heavily associated with protection, healing/health, and prosperity. Uniquely, green onion corresponds to money and strength, garlic banishment and curse-breaking, onion with love and lust.
Personal and unique correspondence:
As these plants are the first to spring up (the bulb carries sunlight providing energy as winter fades), they are associated with the sun and springtime. Because of this, I correlate them to new beginnings and fresh starts.
Uses:
You can use them as you would any of its family members in cooking. If your herb garden has yet to take off as we struggle out of winter, pulling some from an area (that hasn't been treated with pesticides) can provide a nice splash of colour and flavor to your food.
Magically, you can use it to substitute both onions and garlic.
For specifics, I like to braid together the strands and hang it by doorways as a means of protection.
Tumblr media
Here is an example I made just today.
They will wilt naturally, but you can dry them in the oven as you would any other herb. I find using these braids as protection very effective. If you don't mind smelling of onion, you could absolutely wear a braid as a bracelet.
If allium vineale grows near you, take a gander, and consider using it in your practice.
Have a wonderful day, evening, and night everyone.
