could you talk more about the daynes post robert's rebellion?
SURE
first of, this is mostly my hcs, speculations and a mix of things i must have read back when there was the height of asoiaf meta in 2013 because there is almost nothing about the daynes post robert's rebellion. so bear with me.
just to set the scene, the members of house dayne left after the mess of the rebellion were the unnamed older brother of ashara and arthur, the lord and father of edric; allyria the youngest sister that i headcanon to be much younger than her older siblings seeing as she is betrothed to beric dondarrion who is was in his twenties per agot so i don't think the marriage would've occurred if allyria was in her middle thirties or forties if she was closer to ashara and arthur; edric, twelve years old, beric's loyal squire; and gerold aka darkstar head of high hermitage, also in his twenties? around arianne's age.

under the cut because i'm crazy
i don't know if the books are ever going to make clear what happened at the toj-starfall zone but we can be sure only that ned went from one to the other with lyanna's bones and supposedly baby jon to return dawn to the daynes. ashara had a baby of father unknown and shortly after ned was there she took her own life, body never found. i go back and forward in thinking if ashara's brother lord dayne was there with her when ned went or if he was one of the dornish commanders defending the targs. in any case, his presence was completely zero during this time so i think he was too injured for a time or too sickly in general to do something to reestablish the dayne name in dorne after arthur being an important part in elia's disgrace and indirectly, her murder.
because yeah after arthur and ashara's death and going by the books there is zero mention of them, even in the chapters set in dorne or others about dornish characters make no mention of them. and it's strange considering that when you read awoiaf and f&b, the daynes are The knights of dorne. queen nymeria marries a dayne, sends a starfall king to the wall, meria martell commands a dayne to burn oldtown, arguably one of the most powerful cities of the time, out of all the sons of daeron ii and myriah martell, maekar marries a dayne, the only dornish lady. it could be nothing OR something but i think it does mean something. we see there's no daynes in oberyn's party in kl or speculation in general about the new sword of the morning beyond remembering dear old arthur. they've fallen completely into obscurity. the house was reduced to a young girl and its child lord.
edric's dad dies before agot (he doesn't seem to afflicted by his death when he meets arya if he were less than a year dead, inheriting the lordship at such a young age would've been dramatic to him), i would say just after becoming a page to beric dondarrion at 7 yo and i headcanon the marriage between beric and allyria was brokered at this time too. this was part of a fic i was writing like 500 years ago but i think lord dayne must have known he would not live too long, not to see edric grow so he must have looked for someone to prepare and take care of allyria and edric after he died. betrothing allyria to a marcher lord is......strange. if a dornish person would have to be married to someone it would go like this 1) not from the reach 2) not from the marches in that order, there is too much bad blood. the daynes have a longstanding tradition of killing oakhearts so marrying allyria to the heir of blackhaven and giving him his only heir, lord dayne entrusted a complete stranger with the future of his house.
beric would've been in charge of teaching young edric just about everything. he would be living in the stormlands for almost half his live, learning from a his maester and how to govern a stormlands' castle. meanwhile, allyria in a few years probably around agot time would be ready to marry beric when she reached her majority. she would've been the defacto ruler of starfall in edric's name when lord dayne dies, i think the idea was to swap when edric gained his spurs: he would return to starfall after a successful run as a tourney knight, probably gaining some recognition from whatever beric was tasked with at the capital (rip king) and then accompany allyria to be married to his knight master. andddd fin.
the thing is. allyria being so young during the rebellion, lord dayne absence for whatever reason and then dying, let the younger members with no connections in the wider dorne political context. it is said young children go to the water gardens and it's fun yeah but it's def a starting point for politics for many lords. it's close to the martells and it's an opportunity to make friends with future rulers, /everyone/ is going. the daynes didn't have this. allyria was probably very young when the rebellion happened (i think no older than 5) and for obvious reasons she was not sent to the water gardens; as for ned, i think lord dayne could not secure an invitation, this or he died too early to even try. if allyria had gone, she would've been for sure one of arianne's companions, she has both the breeding and the standing, but NOT and it's crucial, the reputation. see what arianne has to say in affc about gerold's standing:
"He is highborn enough to make a worthy consort, she thought. Father would question my good sense, but our children would be as beautiful as dragonlords."
it's must be passé to associate with the daynes at this point. think of the conningtons losing all standing when joncon lost the battle and was exiled.
in any case, allyria, more than edric, grew in obscurity. as of the books she's betrothed to a marcher lord nobody knows if he's alive or dead, has a missing nephew and it's in charge of one of the most ancient first men houses of westeros. sad! at least ned is having more fun. which leads me to darkstar. i see his thirst to prove himself, his notoriety as a cruel knight as another way to separate himself from what the main branch has fallen into. he is in his twenties so he was probably affected by the same dark cloud as the others.
"If I led a quarter of a million men to death, would they call me Gerold the Great? I shall remain Darkstar, I think. At least it is mine own."
he wants to have what arthur had, but not be the sword of the morning, he wants something that it's his own, as he says. he may want the sword and the fame like arthur, but not to be associated with another's bad luck so to speak. it's very telling that he's called one of "the most dangerous man in dorne" and what is the sword of the morning if not this? he's a dark mirror of the daynes pre rebellion, just like allyria would've been a renown beauty just like ashara is she wasn't cloistered. something something gerold and allyria as mirrors of what could've happened to ashara and arthur if they hadn't the protection of the monarchy.
i once read gerold is meant to have young ned's plot after germ scrapped the five year time skip and i think this is half true. i do think there is something to be done about dawn the sword and i think gerold is going to steal it and do something with it, something ned can't do because he's /still/ in the riverlands. i don't know what but i think it ties nicely with the theme of deconstructing the noble knight archetype. arthur is only great because he knew how to kill.
writing this i had a breakdown about the parallels between arthur and gerold
Tumblr media
to finish this rambling i want to say my hopes for house dayne in what is left of asoiaf is 1) ned alive 2) gerold steals dawn 3) and like. something. honestly i will take anything at this point about allyria. DOES SHE EVEN KNOW? my poor girl and 4) if germ wants to clear the toj situation then it's fine.
thanks for asking and to anyone reaching this point lol. this is mostly general but if you want to talk about anything specific just message me! k thx muah!

George R R Martin has failed to establish any female warriors in/from Dorne (it should be noted that Nymeria of Ny Sar was a leader/general, not a soldier) apart from the Sand Snakes (whose Dad is actual royalty) so *IF* he wants to make Dorne this actual feminist safe haven with women warriors and stuff he’s got to a) explain why Brienne didn’t have dreams of going to Dorne where she’d be accepted and b) make Allyria Dayne the Sword of the Morning c) give Myriah Martell a female personal bodyguard, a la Jonquil Darke, who tags along from Dorne and at some point beats Daemon Blackfyre/Aegor River’s ass in this essay I will

I find myself becoming intrigued by characters from ASOIAF who are mentioned once or twice in the narrative but have longer lasting implications.
Elbert Arryn has fascinated me for a while. He was Jon Arryn's nephew and was heir to the Vale. Until he joined Brandon Stark on that ill fated trip to King's Landing and was executed. It interests me to wonder what would have changed if he lived.
Would he marry Lysa instead of Jon? If so, would they have a happier marriage with more children (I think Lysa's fertility issues were actually Jon's, considering he had three wives but only one sickly son.)?
Or would there have been no need for a marriage with Lysa, seeing as Jon's marriage to her was motivated by the need for an heir, which Elbert surviving mitigates?
But then who would Elbert marry? He is the heir to House Arryn; there aren't many potential options for him. Possibly Asha Greyjoy? Or Arianne Martell?
Quellon Greyjoy is a new fascination for me. He was the Lord of the Iron Isles and the father of Balon, Euron, Victarion and Aeron. He was a reformer, discouraging raiding and the taking of saltwives, bringing maesters to the isles and more. He led the Iron Fleet in battle during Robert's Rebellion, on Robert's side, which is when he died.
The main question with Quellon is how did this guy, who by all accounts was attempting to make the Iron Isles a decent place, father four sons so unlike that? Balon's a bitter asshole, Euron an eldritch horror, Victarion's just dumb and Aeron's a religious fanatic. How did that happen?
I also wonder if Quellon had any impact/influence on Theon and Asha. Going by the dates, Theon was 5 and Asha 10 when he died. Theon's relative decency compared to the rest of the Ironborn could just be that he was raised partially by Ned 'Honourable' Stark but Asha also seems relatively decent by Ironborn standards. Grandpa Quellon's influence perhaps?
The eldest Dayne sibling, the elder brother of Arthur, Ashara and Allyria (personally I like to call him Alford, to complete the name scheme the Dayne parents were clearly going for), intrigues me.
What does he know? Does he know anything about Ashara and her supposedly stillborn baby? Or about Arthur and his prophecy plans with Rhaegar?
Why did he nickname his son Ned, after Ned Stark killed his brother and was potentially involved in his sister's death via knocking her up with the aforementioned stillborn babe? I sure as hell wouldn't be giving my child the same nickname as the man who was involved in the deaths of two of my three siblings. So why did he?

No one:
Not a single soul:
Certain people sadly in every fandom: I'm going to use a white faceclaim for my oc who is a sibling/child to this bipoc character and fancast white actors as canon bipoc. Nothing wrong with that 🥰🥰.
[I adore Bradley James but if I see him fancasted as Aegon Targaryen aka Elia's Aegon one more time I'ma lose it. Same with Tyene Sand, she's Oberyn's daughter for the love of God. She's not white. And I won't be in control of my actions if I see Kathryn Winnick as someone's faceclaim for their oc who is the daughter of Corlys and Rhaenys again].

what do you think of house dayne? i think part of their appeal is that they're so mysterious. we have arthur, ashara, allyria, their nephew edric and of course gerold. so few scenes we have with them and so many questions. btw, do you think ashara is the mother of jon or lyanna?
Oh my god? This is such a great question. I'm going to do my best to answer it, but I will be honest, I have not read the main books, only Fire and Blood.
So House Dayne always felt like almost an offshoot of House Martell to me, but more mystical and magical. I mean, their title is Lord/Lady of Starfall. Arthur's moniker was "Sword of the Morning", and their house sword was called "Dawn". You cannot get anymore mystical and magical then that.
Arthur is a funny character to me. From what I know about him, he was greatly loyal to Rhaegar, but apparently he was also very close to Elia and her children. I've seen many beautiful arts of Elia and Arthur, which made me think that there was something between them, but from what I could find, there wasn't? And he died at the Tower of Joy protecting Lyanna? (And possibly aided Rhaegar in stealing her away.) He was also greatly admired by Jaime Lannister and I have seen some fantastic arts and fics of where one of Jaime and Brienne's sons is named Arthur. He's like Robb in that sense, he's this person everyone aspires to be like, to admire and respect and look up too.
Ashara is a bit confusing to me. She had this relationship with Ned Stark, it seemed like she was the one that Ned wanted and she wanted him in return, but then Brandon died, and Ned married Brandon's betrothed, and so any hope of that going further went out the window. Was it Ned leaving her behind that made her jump? Was it the news of Ned murdering her brother? Is Ashara even dead at all? So many questions.
There isn't much of Allyria to go on except that she was to marry Beric Dondarrian. Is she still alive?
Are the Daynes related to the Targs and the Martells? Because their looks seem to be a mix of both of those families. Edric Dayne having blond hair and blue eyes that look almost purple. Edric is also the son of the unnamed Lord of Starfall. He seems to have a very pure and loyal heart, and his helping Beric during his times being revived is fascinating and truly a shame we never got to see brought to screen.
Gerold's nickname is Darkstar???? Goddammit, HBO, what were you thinking not adapting these characters? I sincerely hope one day we will see these forgotten characters be brought back to life in another show or film.
I'm sorry I couldn't give you more, anon. Thank you again for the question!

Arthur, Ashara, and Allyria Dayne
Since none of these three Daynes of Starfall make it onto the page, I decided to post them together. For minor characters, there's a fair bit of license to do as I wish with them. The only real sticking points are that they have purple eyes, and that Ashara has black hair. It's probably not interesting to anyone but me, but I got into the weeds on the hair color issue. I don't think there's anything canonically stating Arthur's hair color, though most fancasting I've seen has him darker. Allyria is betrothed to Beric Dondarrion, who tragically(/hilariously, in this context) does not remember her hair color after numerous resurrections. Ned, their nephew, has light blond hair, so the unnamed eldest Dayne sibling of this generation (perhaps an Alyn or Arlan or some such thing) likely has a lighter look and/or probably married someone with valyrian coloring. So I've decided that Ashara has the blackest, Arthur has dark brown, and Allyria has medium brown hair. Anyways, that's my ramble for today! Ought to be following this up with Ned and Darkstar after him.

Can you talk more about your house Dayne headcanons? Especially if it's anything about Allyria or Ashara.
hiii sure, though some of them i've already written about here.
okay... let's see. i like to think ashara was younger than elia by more than a few years, the younger of elia's ladies and the only one who could entertain her and make her laugh when elia was in the worse of her pains (some kind of chronic illness?). very lively and carefree, the complete opposite of arthur who was too intense and serious for normal people. i am 100% behind tumblr user mylestoyne's version of arthur and i would not change a thing. i'm obsessed (if you search my arthur tag i'm sure i've reblogged some posts about it). i see her as deeply empathetic and sensitive.
i like the contrast of arthur being too enmeshed in the targ conspiracies while ashara is living the highborn single lady life in the capital, too worried about elia's moods than about aerys or the other lords. though while she was afraid of (and for) arthur, i think she was fascinated by him and could not make herself turn away. let me explain, being the sword of the morning is the top of the top, instant celebrity status, mythic hero sense of destiny. and i think having your brother become and embody this type of role is A Lot. esp bc arthur must have been facing the horrors of whether he was Worthy of wielding dawn and because i don't think he ever let himself be human, not before gaining down and not ever after. growing up with legends of swords of the morning fucks you up, it's like aegon the conqueror suddenly appearing to the targs. like. it's the SWORD that funded your HOUSE, the magic FALLING STAR embodied in the brother ashara always thought was more than human (or less?!?!?!?!). and while she chafed against arthur's bonds, i don't think it
in any case, i think ashara was a very social person, feeding from her connections and when she was sent (in disgrace?) back to starfall after getting pregnant, cut off from her friends and court, to the castle where only her little sister resided was very hard. now her baby is dead, her /brother/ is dead, lord dayne is still in the war, elia dead.... well. i could see her not having anything else to cling to.
i headcanon allyria was either the daughter of a second marriage or a very accidental baby because of the difference in ages between her and her siblings. i like to think her mother was an allyrion of godsgrace that felt very homesick and named her daughter in reference to her former house. of course she was the baby and of course she was spoiled esp because her older siblings were not in starfall at all (edric's dad serving the martells in sunspear, and arthur & ashara in the capital). she's the one who knows the castle best of all because she's never left it, a point of pride and of resentment. and speaking of resentment, while she was happy to see ashara come back to have her baby in dorne, she 100% hated her after she threw herself from the palestone sword tower partly bc as a child she didn't understand why ashara would leave her.
allyria never got on with her oldest brother that well, a massive age difference and the disparity in grief (he remembered ashara and arthur and loved them while allyria never really knew them) didn't help to make them closer, not even when they were the only ones inhabiting starfall after the rebellion. i headcanon allyria as somewhat an odd child to the adults around her, by all technicalities an only child, priding herself in her independence but yearning for company. lord dayne seeing this and not wanting her to grow alone he brings gerold from high hermitage (gerold's mother was a dayne from starfall) and they form a friendship. very pure and very healthy except when gerold needs to gain his spurs and thinks of himself as the man of the castle bc lord dayne as his knight master is too sick to perform the usual lordly tasks like ridding the lands from outlaws or performing justice. this i think contributes to his sense of importance and wanting the sword etc (he leaves starfall bc he starts hating lord dayne's weakness and allyria's passivity in this issue, he also needs to make a name for himself away from this).
allyria loves babies and when ned is born it's like the sun is, too. ned can't leave her and ned will love her for who she is and will not be as bigheaded as gerold. ned adores her in return. in my other post i explained my reasoning behind her betrothal to beric dondarrion, adding to this lord dayne and beric's dad might have been war buddies during the greyjoy rebellion and seen in him and his son people he could trust his sister and heir in case of his death. i don't think allyria seriously loved beric, i don't even think they met more than once or twice, but i do think she was deeply affected by the news of his "death" more for ned than for her being unwed now. she's become too used to be alone.
some made up miscellanea:
i know house jordayne is named for robert jordan the fantasy author but i like to think it's a stark-karstark situation with the daynes.
house dayne of high hermitage was created after davos dayne married nymeria of ny sar as a favor to him and his siblings.
dyanna dayne was also myriah martell's youngest lady and she and maekar fell in love. there was not meant to be another targ-dornish marriage due to the tensions but neither daeron nor myriah could separate them.
i like "fallen and reborn" for their house words bc it's the name of one of the first official visual art i saw of them back in the day. it also goes nicely with the mythical origin of their house.

“I’m sorry, what?” Sansa asked, incredulously and Arya jaw lowered but for once in her life she wasn’t speaking.
“Our sister.” Bran said, in that dead voice he adopted.
“Bran, both your sisters are here.” Arya finally said.
Bran hesitated, most likely stopping himself from complaining about not being Bran Stark anymore to say before saying. “Two of three.”
“So father truly did dishonor mother…” Arya said, sadly and Sansa could not help but feel the same way.
She, as much as she felt guilty about it, was happy when she found out that Jon was not actually her brother. It meant that her father was truly faithful to her mother. But if what Bran says is true then her father…
“No.” He said, “She was conceived and born before your parents even met.”
“Are we going to meet her?” Sansa asked, and Bran nodded.
“She is already here.” Bran said, and both girls jumped in panic. “And on her way up.”
Sansa and Arya exchanged looks as there was a knock at the door and a young woman who must have been Allyria Dayne walked in. If she looked anything like what they say, like what Cersei would not stop bitching about, her mother looked like than Sansa could see how her father would have been tempted. She was gorgeous, and she shared their father's eyes.
“Ummm… Hello… Your Graces.” Allyria said, biting her bottom lip and Sansa heard Arya gasp from beside her.
“I think sister is fine.” Sansa said, flashing her a dazzling smile.
