how did you get started making music, tools-wise?

I've talked about this a bit before and I don't necessarily recommend doing this, so skip the following two paragraphs and go right to the one under the break if you actually want the method I recommend

I lied to a girl I liked from my school and told her that, because I could play guitar I could also play piano, so I could teach her to play piano. both of these statements were lies.

I had to panic and learn both guitar and piano one week ahead of the lessons I was giving her as an excuse to hang out. so I self-taught in a haze of panic and "maybe she'll like me" (she did not) (but she kind of did) (but she was bicurious) (but she was wishy-washy on if she wanted to get together and her parents didn't like me) (and her parents were homophobic) (I think she might have texted me at one point years down the line to tell me she had a girlfriend but it was after I deleted our text history and I'm chronically unable to remember to put people's names into my contacts so who knows)

but that's all an aside. that's a bad method.

anyway if you want to start making music in earnest, doing what I did when I got serious about making songs instead of trying to impress girls whose parents wanted to destroy me with their minds here's a better answer

go acquire FL Studio. it's apparently really easy to do this because people have been acquiring it for years, or so I've heard. FL is good for learning because you've got 20 years worth of free tutorials available to you on youtube to dig through and plenty of stock vsts to play with out of the box

FL Studio is, realistically, the only tool you actually need to start making music. you could get away with less, but it's what I used, and as long as you don't pick up Specific Bad Habits, your experience with it will transfer to other DAWs if you decide to switch it later

that's all, really

if you go this route, the golden rule I'm going to impart on you right now is that you need to have a limiter on your songs. the default FL studio song templates have one, so you should keep it until you know enough to know why you might adjust something like that

it doesn't matter if it sounds fine in the editor without a limiter. everyone thinks it's not a big deal at the time, but as you get more experienced, there's literally nothing short of getting in legal trouble that you'll regret more than realising that your old work is almost entirely unsalvageable because you didn't put a limiter on it and now half of the audio is just lost data to clipping

I'm gonna put a few more recommendations for things I've used, just so you can consider them if you need something else to chew on. everything past this point is entirely optional and you'll do just fine with FL Studio alone. in fact, probably don't worry about everything below the line

DIGITAL AUDIO WORKSTATIONS THAT AREN'T FL

for tracker-based editing and chiptunes, use Renoise. you'll either love or hate trackers, and while they have a steeper learning curve than piano roll DAWs, they might come more naturally to you. I personally think that Renoise is a lot of fun to use. it kinda has an "addictive" quality to it, as funny as that is to say

for quickly sketching songs, use [F]Jummbox. it's an html workstation (multiplatform!) that writes your sketches to a url, meaning it's pretty easy to collaborate on musical sketches. Jummbox is good for making chiptune style instrumentals, but what makes it especially accessible is the fact that it works on a piano roll system, which will be familiar to you if you're working in FL

for writing sheet music, I recommend starting with [F]Musescore. I'll warn you right now that there aren't really any good notation editors and you're making lesser-of-evils decisions when you pick any of them, but it's probably the best compromise out there right now. it's the one I use when I need to hand something to a physical musician. you can also export pieces as midi, although there's better ways to do that lol

VSTs

if you can acquire Pianoteq, do that. if you feel uncomfortable with acquiring it, [F]Keyzone Classic is free and can sound pretty nice with a bit of work, but you really have to learn to work with it

if your workstation can handle it performance-wise, go pick up [F]Vital - Spectral Warping Wavetable Synth. there's tons of free presets for this out there and it sounds good. cool synth. Serum: Advanced Wavetable Synthesizer is also good and has plenty of presets, but it's on the pricy side, so consider how comfortable you are with [finding a friend to buy it for you]

[F]Decent Sampler doesn't do much out of the box, because it's just a tool for playing sample banks, but if you go to [F]Pianobook, you can find tons of weird and fun sample packs of just about everything you can imagine. sounds derived from folk instruments, industrial equipment, lego sets, stylophones, choirs, whatever. incredibly useful.

Valhalla VintageVerb. this is the reverb plugin. you want this one. [F]Valhalla Super Massive is also good but it's more focused on alien-sounding reverb effects and enormous spaces, so it's kind of got a niche use case and you should be a little careful with it

if you've heard a lo-fi hip hop song on youtube, it probably used [F]iZotope Vinyl. this one can save you a lot of time if you're going for that sound because it comes with all the little vinyl flourishes outside of compression (like dust crackling) that you'd otherwise have to add yourself

[F]Genny VST is advertised as giving a genesis/megadrive sound, but what actually makes it shine is that it's an actual synth emulating the YM2612 and SN76489 sound chips. this means you can create your own sounds that work within those specs, which is a lot of fun! definitely beats just using samples, if you ask me

HARSH VSTS THAT I PERSONALLY LIKE BUT WHICH ALSO MIGHT !!HURT!! YOU. SO BE VERY CAREFUL USING THESE.

[F]Tritik Krush is a bitcrushing plugin. it does a good job of bitcrushing and downsampling. I use it a lot in my songs, but you've really gotta know how to keep this one under control, because it's fully capable of making painful sounds on accident and can completely devour your mix

[F]FSA Latcher is a gorgeous noisebox. it screams in horrible ways and makes dying machine noises in various colours. this is the musical equivalent of working with radioactive material, so be extremely careful using this in anything you don't want to hurt the listener's ears

girlfriend just told me I have to recommend [F]Noise Engineering Ruina to you if I'm making a category with this heading. I don't personally use it, but she likes it (she's better at music than I am) and it's free, so you should go pick it up. "it annihilates sounds very deliciously" (maybe I should use it)

im struggling with drawing dj PLEASE make a titorial PLEASE

Luckily for you, I already have!

At least, for his face... but!! I'm going to do it again, because i have this sticker right on my keyboard of his face traced out (though it's missing his chin, chin stripe, and headphone...thingies????) so I've had a lot more time to be staring at his beautiful face more. That and I'm going to be making a tutorial for the rest of his body!

So yes, 2 rectangles, both placed in the middle axis of the big one and one of them being perpendicular. But, I think the sizes and placements should be changed a little - So! the middle rectangle should be on the bottom because I realized that in the old one, DJ would've had very small eyes with the old frame, which is NO BUENO!! He has colossal orbits, huge peepers, much like the jumping spiders that everyone just kind of collectively (and understandably) assumed he would be.

Additionally, I decided to make the blue, vertical rectangle in this almost like a square. I literally drew this already, stared at sticker, felt it didn't look right, so i stretched the fucker out and this is more... close I think. DJ's face is exceptionally wide which i feel is a learning curve since when we're making human faces, they are very Long instead. So more like square and then a rectangle at the bottom like it's being tucked in.

So, with the around the same width of the edges of the pink rectangle that protude out from the blue rectangle, make the chin as an extension of the blue rectangle at the bottom (in orange). And, very important, because the cheeks will be the base for a lot of the upcoming facial stuff, add the cheeks! make sure they kind of come off from the rectangular frame a little bit because they do that

SO! Guideline essentials for what I'm about to make next. From the middle of the cheek make a line down to the bottom (pink) - this marks where you will have the corners of his mouth end. There is the bottom of the cheek that you'll make a horizontal line for (magenta), and then there is the horizontal top of the bottom rectangle (orange). The orange-magenta lines mark the area where the bottom of his nose resides, and the magenta line is where the top lip and bottom of nose end.

I'm getting wayy too into guide-shit but. Nose! big circle 2 and little circles at the sides and his Mouth, this curvy little rectangle that just fits right up in the guidelines.

EYES. ORBS. HUGE

A quarter of them is kind of flush with the nose but they're BIG and very Circular

Smooth everything out? A problem that I have with making DJ is that he has some space with the eyebrows and the forehead but i just forget to draw it in favor making the eyebrows bigger

From the cheeks to the head and the face to the chin, it kinda curves in like that - and the edges of the teeth follow the edges of the blue rectangle from earlier.

I made the eyes a little bigger here oops

Add lips, and make the bottom row of teeth 2 teeth shorter than the top row. And on teeth, DJ has a very gummy smile, and his gums take up half of his teeth when his teeth are closed! (not so much when they're open)

Add the sharp/flat piano keys on the bottom of his teeth, and that's DJ's face!

Now onto the rest of his body!

Very big thing i will say to you. DJMM's body is stupid. It's wack as fuck. These proportions are outrageous. The neck is stupid thin and has such a stupid placement. The head is enourmous. What the fuck is going on here.

Okay so side view (holes in the sides are where the arms attach), and an above and below view.

the ??? i literally. i don't know what they are. they're these golden grommets on his back or something i have no idea what purpose they serve

Also, the hole, there's a big long hole that runs beside his bottom speakers.

His body is kind of polygonal? It's Egg shaped, but it might help you to know there is some edge to it. All of the circles are where the Joints attach to his body.

Speaking of joints, THOSE are the most wack thing about DJ by far.

His joints are built like this, where his arms have these little sockets at the joint? They're trying to make a ball and socket joint but because of the socket, they're severely limiting how much the arm can bend - the picture that I sent of him above this is the MOST his arms can bend without clipping into itself because of it and it. mm. It makes me mad esp because there's better ways of doing it

If you want to be super canon compliant you can add those but you can also do the Music Man method: just straight up being a ball and 2 sticks with no further details and it works just fine because no one will notice

The arms clipping into itself is always a little inevitable but man i can only wonder. was there truly no better way of doing it

The neck has these same joints as well, and with all of those together - you have a DJ! (add headphones and top hat as well. lol)

(now excuse me as i post the almost daily music man, which completely goes against 99% of this post.... mainly bc i only honed this down Right Now)

18. "I'm embarrassed." "Don't be." and 21. "Let me love you."

The sound of piano music is not an uncommon occurrence in the home of Charles Leclerc. What is an uncommon occurence, however, is the sound of piano music in the home of Charles Leclerc when Charles Leclerc himself is only just walking through the front door.

Logically, Charles knows there is only one person who could possibly have let themselves into his apartment on a Wednesday night in the middle of the season. But, the prospect of that person being responsible for the piano music is so unbelievable that Charles is starting to wonder if there might actually be a stranger in his home.

The soft, simple melody comes to a sudden stop as the person playing clearly pushes the wrong key, followed by a muttered curse.

In Dutch.

Yeah, definitely not a stranger, Charles thinks to himself as he makes his way through the apartment.

He stops a couple of feet behind Max, reveling in the sight of him sitting at Charles' piano, with his phone propped up where Charles' usually keeps his sheet music, having paused some sort of piano tutorial video. His fingers are resting on the keys.

The fact that he somehow manages to make the position of his fingers look angry is impressive.

"Hey," Charles eventually says, announcing his presence.

Max nearly falls off the bench in his urgency to turn around to stare at Charles in horror.

Charles has to bite back the chuckle threatening to escape.

"I thought you wouldn't be back for another hour," Max tells him, tone slightly accusing. As if this isn't Charles' home.

"The meeting finished early," Charles explains, stepping closer to Max and the piano. "What are you doing?"

The Dutchman's cheeks are a bright shade of red, and Charles can't help how he wants to feel that blush against his lips.

"Nothing," Max huffs, turning back to the piano and locking his phone screen, making it go black.

The Monégasque cocks an eyebrow, unconvinced.

"Doesn't look like nothing," he points out, and Max has the audacity to glare at him.

"Any chance you're willing to drop it and pretend this never happened?" Max counters, and the hopefulness in his voice is so endearing that Charles almost feels bad for crushing it.

Almost.

"Not in this lifetime."

Max sighs and runs a hand through his hair, looking away from Charles.

"I —," Max starts, but he doesn't seem to know how to continue that sentence.

He pauses, closes his mouth, and thinks. Tries again.

"I've been trying to learn how to play piano because > know how much it means to you. And I wanted it to be something we could share, but as it turns out, I'm even worse at anything even remotely related to music than I originally thought."

Max says it so quickly that Charles almost doesn't hear all of it. Except he does.

And his heart fucking soars in his chest, because that's just the sweetest fucking thing anyone's ever done for him.

"It's embarrassing. I'm embarrassed," Max continues.

"Don't be," Charles responds instantly, and he's in front of Max before his next words come out. "Hey, don't you dare be embarrassed about this."

Max isn't looking at him, instead fixating on a spot on the floor by Charles' feet. Charles lifts a hand, pushing a finger under Max's chin and tilting his head up. Those cheeks are still bright red and his eyes look almost haunted.

"Max, that is the single most thoughtful thing anyone has ever done for me. And I love it," Charles tells him seriously, neither his tone nor his eyes leaving Max any room to doubt his words.

Something in Max's expression softens at that, and he looks a little relieved, but he still tries to avert his gaze.

It's adorable, sure, but Charles isn't having it. He wants to look into those stunning blue eyes, thank you very much.

"Stop looking away," he insists, using his hold on Max's chin to turn his head again.

The Dutchman tries to resist, but Charles isn't budging, and Max eventually has no choice but to give in. Their eyes meet, and Charles is smiling so wide it feels like his face might actually split in half.

"Come on," he goes on, releasing Max's chin in favor of bending down to grab one of his hands and tugging.

Max rises to his feet without complaint.

"Where are we going?" He asks as Charles begins to lead him down the hallway, towards the bedroom.

"Just shut up and let me love you."

It's a simple request — one Max would be a damned fool to deny.

And Max Verstappen may be a lot of things, but a damned fool sure as hell isn't one of them.

i think the thing that really sticks with me about the beatles -- and to that end probably a lot of the musical geniuses from their era and before that -- was that they had little to no sophisticated training. they just picked up instruments and tried to copy what they liked, or learned from family and other amateurs. no fancy music theory degree, no complex lessons with trained professional teachers, not even able to google for tabs and youtube tutorials.

i think it really gets forgotten in general that a lot of the musical geniuses of the early 20th century started from almost absolutely nothing in terms of musical skill, resources and knowledge. jimi hendrix started playing when he found a ukulele with one string in the trash while removing it from someone's house. he started playing with that one string, following songs by ear. that was in 1957, and by the time he died a little over 12 years later he was one of the most prolific and skilled guitarists of the 20th century. ray charles learned piano from the guy who ran a local diner where he and his mother had to live for a time due to financial troubles. the fanciest most of these musicians get is that they HAPPENED to be lucky enough to have a piano in the house or a parent who knew how to play or afford lessons. they did so much with so little.

this Week it’s Time for my In-store Release Event！！〜My Album has Finally Released〜

To celebrate the release of my album, I got to write a lyric essay for Uta Net. This was my first attempt at writing such an essay, I took on the challenge by reading many essays in advance😲!! II honestly had no idea what to do, I kept worrying until the very end😂 The recital was a lot of fun 😳Actually, I came across something very interesting called a “sound shield” at Yuji Toriyama-san’s studio where I did most of my vocal recording for the album. I was so intrigued by the item that I bought a mini size. These sound shields or microphone isolation shields are crucial because they provide a better environment for the microphone to produce good sound quality. They pick up reverberations that occur when voices or musical instruments echo in a room. Typically, I use a handheld mic when I practice but I record all my demo songs with a mic on a mic stand at home so I knew that investing in a shield like that would increase the quality of my recordings considerably! I took the plunge and bought one. When I recorded my reading of the essay using this filter, the audio was recorded very well 😳I think it sounded great because it delicately picked up my breathing! It felt like I was almost in a professional radio recording environment 😳However, it's quite a hassle to set up the filter on the mic stand so I've removed the filter at home but here’s a picture of Toriyama-san's studio! *laughs* (of course I have his permission to post this😉) It's a great way to easily improve the quality of your recording environment!

Only 2 days left until the Shibuya in-store event 🥳🎉 These days I am finally starting to realise that my album has actually released. From last year to this year, I was busy creating the album, facing each and every song carefully. I’d like to look back on some of the fun photos which were taken during the album recording 🤭 Here we have a group photo of Konno Strings during the recording of "Asu wo Yume Mite Utau"🎻 Seeing Takebe-san in the booth giving instructions to the string players almost felt like we were on the set of a TV program. On the one hand it felt quite hectic but on the other hand, there was an overwhelming sense of reassurance that the production was in capable hands 😳✨It was a really amazing recording😍 (Source)

“Sono Saki e” Oricon Ranking

As mentioned in another blog post, “Sono Saki e” made it to #14 on its first day in the Daily Oricon Charts. That’s honestly a lower entry-position than expected but not too shabby (in comparison, Keiko managed to reach #8 on the first day).

However, Wakana is still in the Top 30 for the Weekly Oricon Charts which is actually pretty neat. Not as high as her 1st (#19) or 2nd (#22) original studio album but much better than her cover album (#42) => Oricon

Who is C418?

Let me paint you a picture. It’s 2013, two years since Minecraft’s official release date. The game has taken the world by storm, beloved by kids and adults alike. Finally, you have succumbed to giving it a try, leading you to log onto a single-player game. You spawn into a green world, trees surrounding you and a mountain far in the distance. Slightly confused, you begin to walk around. Arriving at a tree, you start to punch it until a block pops out. You look in your inventory and see that the wood can now be crafted into other materials. You begin to realize this game is unlike any game you’ve ever played. Done away with the repetitive task lists, tutorials, and concrete gameplay, you know you have the entire creative freedom in your hands. About an hour has gone by, and you begin building a house to protect yourself from what’s to come in the night. Suddenly, a Piano chord sound strikes the ear, and the track “Minecraft” begins. Arguably, this enhances your experience in a way no other game has replicated previously, making any feeling of mundaneness vanish into relaxation. This, of course, is by design.

Let’s take it back to the beginning.  The man responsible for Minecraft’s soundtrack is a German composer by the name of Danial Rosenfield. By the screen name C418, which is a cryptic yet almost meaningless take on his brother’s creative name ‘C818’, he began his music journey from humble beginnings while working at an assembly line in Germany. He would utilize the skills taught by his brother to make music as a hobby, releasing random music to his blog almost every week. At first, he was comically bad at it, doing it for just the pure fun of it. With time, however, he began to focus in on a signature style that he liked, sparking a passion from within.  His instrumentals exuded simplicity, minimalism, and ambiance; the perfect combination for video game soundtracks.

By 2009, a Swedish man named Markus “Notch” Persson approached Rosenfield on an online indie development forum called TIG Source; This forum is where C418 would start to become more comfortable with English. Notch, building indie games for the pure enjoyment of it, had an idea for something new that he believed C418 could complement.  He asked C418 to produce the music for his latest game, Minecraft, and the rest is history. The unique part about this relationship between the two creators is that Notch allowed Rosenfield to have 100% rights to his music, as he was an indie developer who wasn’t too interested in owning the entirety of the game for monetary reasons.

Rosenfield's approach to creating the soundtrack was a direct contrast to the gameplay found in Minecraft. In its core concept of sprouted chaos ensuing unpredictable elements of the world, C418 decided to create a calming musicscape for the game. His tracks often portrayed the quality of ‘less is more,’ as a few notes were responsible for producing entire songs. He avoided too much structure and percussive beats, as they were too aligned with what was happening in the game. In 2011, when he released his first studio album, Minecraft: Volume Alpha, it was clear what direction his life would take him after that. He managed to accomplish a solid income from this work with the instant success of the game, which allowed him to rid of his mundane day job and start composing music full-time.

In 2013, he released a follow-up album to his first, Minecraft: Volume Beta. This album contained rejected tracks that would eventually become the sound of the “creative” gamemode, as well as new tracks for different biomes in the game (such as the in-game interpretation of hell, the Nether). He also included a few more dark pieces, introducing a sense of fear and diving into new emotional landscapes with his music. Furthermore, some tracks exceeded 10 minutes, including the track “Alpha,” which combined several previous elements of the first soundtrack into a celebrative piece of what the game represented. He experimented with some beats here and there, such as in the track “Aria Math,” a creative mode song that was later remixed by Protostar from Monstercat. This development on his sequel album represented the expansion on his original work, which parallels the game's development when it was released while progressively improving until the official release. 

Since then, C418 has produced soundtracks for several different games, some big and some small. He has maintained the rights to most of his music, which is an applaudable achievement that few can do at his level of popularity. He created three more tracks for Minecraft back in 2018, teasing the release of his final volume in the installment of Minecraft albums. However, Minecraft has since shifted in terms of ownership, with some implied complications with the larger company Microsoft now owning Minecraft. Nonetheless, Minecraft: Volume Alpha still remains a masterpiece to this day, used in many contexts other than the pixelated game. Whether it’s for sleep, study, or leisure, the album has served as a soundtrack that goes beyond the game and into real life. C418’s role in creating Minecraft served as a crucial one, as he enhanced the gaming experience by utilizing music as a medium; thus, C418 cemented the nostalgia for an entire generation of kids continuing the game’s popularity to this day.

We doing headcanons again cause I am procrastinating writing the next chapter for my fic so hhhhh i’m also tired so if there’s any mistakes woops:

- The piano that is heard in the Patch Castle theme is played by Prince Fluff, or, at least he can play that song. Same thing with Kirby’s Pad, I believe it is a kalimba, which is something Fluff can also play and taught Kirby how to

- Kirby loves to draw, and has since improved from their blobs of color. Everyone is very proud

- Sailor Waddle Dee and Bandana Waddle Dee have the strongest sibling rivalry, while Parasol is too tired to deal with them

- To summarize Sailor, she is all talk, all bark and no bite. She can def blackmail, but once Meta and/or Dedede are involved, she will turn a 180 and get all nervous. Meta for obvious reasons, but Dedede because she used to work for him alongside Parasol and Bandana, so she still highly respects him, even if she helped try to take him down and make Meta the new ruler

- All of DDD’s Dees that are a part of his “army” all start out with a parasol as their weapon and move up to something else, most commonly spears and swords, as well as the occasional bow.

- Bandana is basically DDDs child so he falls under this, as well as technically Parasol who was dragged into signing up, they are very lazy and just wanna nap so they’ve never gone past a parasol, but don’t underestimate them! Sailor also once had a parasol, but since joining the Meta-Knights, now has a wider array of weapons including but not limited to: spears, swords, harpoons and harpoon guns, lasers, canons, and more.

- Sailor also does most of the more mundane tasks around the Halberd, which is something she is not opposed to at all, mostly because the rest of the crew offer to help anyways so she rarely has to do much heavy lifting. They all like to go on 3 am grocery runs.

- Javelin Knight likes buying candles, it will sit in the candle isle and smell candles until one of the other Meta-Knight come and say that they’re leaving. They really likes strong pineapple smells, like, pina colada candles are S tier to them

- Daroach likes messing with Dark Meta by throwing random stuff through the Dimensional Mirror and pretending it wasn’t him. This worked flawlessly until one of the Squeakers went through and got caught

- Francisca and Flamberge are biological sisters while Zan is not related to them at all. They still are very close anyways

------- I was in a Gartic Phone game a while ago and they brought up the idea of what the Dream Friends would post on YouTube, I feel like I’ve seen this on tumblr before so apologies if it feels like I’m copying:

- Morpho explains differences in flowers as well as what they mean, explaining flower language in general, but always ends the video with how they taste cause butterfly

- Dark Meta does asmr, but the type where it started off as a joke but now he takes requests for what to say and is strangely popular

- Fluff does knitting tutorials, both in and out of Patch Land so he has a normal series and a “how to make a living person” series

- Galacta is the lo-fi girl of Kirby, they have a livestream that is just footage of them in their crystal with lo-fi music over it. No one knows who actually manages the account it’s just there

- Sailor and Bandana do pranking videos on each other that has progressively gotten more and more intense to the point where it’s now very dangerous, but seeing as they’ve helped stop the end of time and space, it’s nothing more than a prank

- Of course, Dedede does mukbangs, expect he stands out by making it kinda a podcast too? He’ll invite a different person each episode and talk, again, strangely popular

- The rest of the 4 Meta-Knights all share a channel, all posting their own stuff, it’s very confusing

- Meta almost did asmr too, but he switched to sword fighting tutorials that turned into tips and tricks to use in battle and 360 poses with weapons for artist. Yes he has one of those spinning plate things to stand on so he can just hold the pose and get all the angles

- Shadow Kirby does late night variety streams, he’s very well known in the mirror dimension

- Elfilin does those videos that are like, kids roleplaying with LPS or stuffed animals

- Marx also does asmr but joke asmr where it’s a crappy mic and loud noises, as well as low quality gameplay with the same crappy mic with him being very toxic

- Magalor is a nerd so I feel like he plays obscure games and table top stuff, or at least videos explaining how to play, with guest helper Marx explaining how to be toxic in whatever the topic is

35's... certainly a number. One I'm pondering quite a bit as I lie here fighting with myself trying to get some sleep.

But there's some stuff I gotta get off my chest too.

I've been in some mucky, murky, ink-black headspace lately, and it's definitely been affecting the way I look at stuff. I'm so easily irritated by everything that I want to tell the whole world to piss off and choke on a lemon. That's... not like me.

But I'm coming to the conclusion that what irritates me most is, simply, me. More specifically, my perception of myself and how unfulfilled I feel. That I am not reaching my full potential. That in some ways, I don't even feel like I recognize myself.

But that's a battle coming to a head.

Over the last few months, I have been taking time to do small things to try and improve myself. I'm down over 20 pounds since the end of December. Considering I was almost 300 pounds at that point, this is a step in the right direction.

I've also been taking small steps to gain confidence enough to learn to play piano... care of the tutorials contained in Rock Band 3. Considering the weight I've shed has been from both drinking less soda and from drumming, all I would have to do is learn bass and I could easily be a one man music machine. I'm gonna be real though, I don't foresee learning bass anytime soon with the next part going on.

But the biggest step for me comes in fulfilling one of my lifelong dreams: to create a video game. I am participating in a game jam (basically a small contest of amateur creators) next month in which I am entering the demo of a currently unnamed strategy RPG I have been working on for several years. It's not groundbreaking or flashy, but it's undeniably me, and it's one of few things I am proud of that I've created over the years. Want to give a big shoutout to @vilkalizer @vonithipathachai and @gyppygirl2021 for inspiring me to not give up, and to keep that spark alive.

Trying to balance it all is a challenge... and half the fun. But I do wish it would let me sleep tonight...

Either way, 35... is quite a number, and let's leave it at that.

Thank you so much for the ask! I wrote down the few I think that would have a YouTube account (mainly since I couldn't think of anything for the others). I also included some backstory to the channels, I hope you enjoy!

Clay Calloway: The_Clay_Calloway_Official

-Practically a dead account. Almost all the videos are old music videos and are at least 15 years old, but he started posting a few videos with him and Ash rehearsing for the show or playing guitar together once the show gets going.

Eddie Noodleman: Games Junkie

-Extremely active account with weekly uploads of video game play throughs, reviews, and that sort of thing. It is linked to his Twitch account now and he actually makes a fair bit of money from it due to his pretty large popularity (and his having said account since college).

Buster Moon: Buster Moon Theatre Confidential

-Made the account after Sing 1 at Mizuki's urging and mostly posts information about the theatre and advertises it's upcoming shows. He has made a few videos about being a director and the theatre troupe itself as well.

Gunter Järvien: Gunter's Studio

-He has actually had the account since before he moved to the states and he mainly uploads dance videos or motivational stuff for dancers. Now that he's part of the troupe as well, he will post vlogs of rehearsal and that sort of thing as well.

Nooshy Peart: Dance_Loud

-Mostly dance tutorials, but has a few parkour like trick videos added to the mix. She has a fair bit of followers and actually gets paid from their work on the channel as well. They now also do collabs with Ryan and Gunter during the shows.

Ash Batalla: The_Ash_Official

-Actually started it right after her breakup and the first video was the process of making Set It Free that went viral. She now posts a lot of songwriting process videos, as well as some videos of her singing with Clay. Clay was actually the inspiration behind her name.

Porsha Crystal: Crystal Gaming and Glamour

-She has had the account for years, and mostly posts gaming videos as well as some fashion videos and vlogs. She was actually a subscriber of Eddie's and is decently popular. However, the channel name does change to Moon Gaming and Glamour after Sing 2.

Ryan Willis: Ryan's Vlogs

-He mostly posts dance videos and tutorials, but now with the show, he also posts vlogs of rehearsal and other bits of theatre life. He does also collab with Nooshy and Gunter a fair bit, and actually does a few videos with Johnny as well. The account is only a few years old.

Johnny Taylor: Johnny_Skating

-Started the channel in an act of rebellion when he was 16, but barely posted more than a few skating videos. After he joined the theatre however, he posted singing and piano videos as well. Barry was the first to find his account and was his first follower.

The Theatre Itself: The New Moon Theatre Official

-Run by Mizuki and mostly acts as advertising of the theatre. It also has a fair number of behind the scenes videos as well as interviews of the troupe members. It was started right after Sing 1.

The Show Itself: Out Of This World Official

-Run by the OOTW PR team, it has vlogs and interviews filmed by the actors, as well as sneak peaks of the show. The cast do interact with it a lot and do streams on this account as well. It was started before the Majestic run began for marketting.

had a dream heavily based off almost winning a lantern apostle victory & then going to jail after 5 hours despite having 16 cultists. i hate this stupid game why did I get hebe stanton from a piece of sh14 lore instead of an area that would've given me the rite intercalate. i had every ingredient. anyway what do i remember ...?

- being high up on the walls of a courtyard on a sunny day. it was a very large area enclosed and the walls might have been part of a larger castle.

- I was in a group of people. they were cards on the board and they were there with me out side of my elementary school. one guy had long & light purple hair ? by clicking on him he had some kind of special thing - rich heir maybe? weird family circumstance?

our event (?) here might've been cancelled, but i wanted to do mentor reading to the kids anyway, so we just walked in. it smellrd the same as it always did & made me feel really nostalgic. we were going to talk to the principal to make sure we were allowed to be in here, & asked the first teacher we saw where the principal was. out shopping, she said, and shrugged.

one of the others was reading something on the wall & it was supposed to be an area you draw & write about your friend. one of these hung up drawings and paragraphs had my name & a picture of ME !! i was so touched. I thought it might've been a kid from summer camp that I became friends with (i also recalled that the last time i worked at a summer camp was the year i started college, which was 7 years ago, so no child would be in elementary school postibg drawings remembering me unless they were a baby when i workd with thrm). anyway the others walked on but I wanted to take a picture but t ket ending up blurry. I asked purple hair guy to do it bc he was really tall but idk if It worked then either.

I ended up in the principal's office & was looking around at things I remembered. they'd replaced the ???? from my childhood memory with a pool table. but the double piano was still there. there was an older lady supervising me and said that I could touch the piano once and she wouldn't snitch (I remembered playing fur Elise on it as a kid) & I put down my handful of ??? on top of the piano. thry all immediately fell inside. the lady also immediately got worried that the owner would return and see us touching her stuff & hovered by the windows,.not helping me pick up my things.

- now much more flat based but way more fallen London themed as well. the cards of people were decreased. i could gain a power that would extend the period of time before a failed summon attacked and it was just a cropped panel of izutsumi. ordering purple hair guy to stqy out late on cult business introduced w new annoyance which was "strict family that I'd have to persuade".

i ended up finding tutorials on what to aim for on stackexchange for some godforsaken reason & they basically suggested I needed to perform ultimate summoning, hope the old winter woman wouldn't grab me and instead get one of my minions, & then "try to save him" aka mutilating his transformed and destroyed body until he looked like a cartoon green witch corpse. and with the corpse we ... ??? achieved. something.

unfortunately my brain reintroduced all the requirements of an apostle victory again so I was like damn now I have to prevent the green sun corpse from decaying into two raw prophets. and I ALSO need seven witnesses and the allure and the lantern ichor and frau schussel and

A Tall and Small Collection | S2.23 | Making a Musician

Ashlynn was absolutely jittering with excitement. How could she be so silly? It had been around for years! How come she only just heard about it? This was going to be the greatest thing ever, especially for Dorian.

Ashlynn hurried into her apartment and pried her shoes off of her feet and left them at the front door. By the sound of it, Dorian was playing music on the counter, singing at the top of his lugs.

Maybe it was Ashlynn’s fondness of the Borrower family, but in her opinion Dorian had true talent. Now that they were mending fences, Ashlynn felt like she could step up and help him reach his full potential. It was possibly a risk, and maybe she should’ve talked to Soren about it first, but she was too excited to care. At the very least, she needed to show this to Dorian.

“I’m home!” she called. “Dorian? You there?” Ashlynn threw her bag onto the couch, making sure it was safe to do so, and fished her phone from her purse, practically skipping to the kitchen when the device was in her hand. The teenage Borrower was standing on the kitchen counter, song just ending, and instinctually turned and looked up in the direction of Ashlynn’s voice.

“Hey,” he said with a smile. “Welcome back. Is… everything okay?”

“Yeah,” said Ashlynn eagerly. “More than great actually.”

“Big news? Should I grab Soren and Rey? Well, maybe just Rey. Soren still might be out. You look like you’re getting ready to burst,” said Dorian, seeing the light in Ashlynn’s eyes. She was obviously eager to share whatever it was.

“Well, yes and no. It’s mostly news for you. Well… less of news and more of a surprise. A surprise for you! Well…” Ashlynn sputtered and tripped over her words, making Dorian chuckle. “Here. I’ll just show you.” Ashlynn stepped up to the counter and swiped open her phone before clicking on an app she didn’t know existed – Garage Band.

Ashlynn propped up her phone against the wall and let the program load. Dorian watched Ashlynn excitedly tap away at the screen and adjust it so that he could clearly see the device which was almost as tall as he was while laying on its side. He wasn’t sure wat had her so worked up, but he was curious enough to walk across the counter and find out. He hadn’t seen Ashlynn this excited about something in a while.

“Okay, I didn’t really know what I was doing, but I played around with it after one of my co-workers showed this to me on his phone,” said Ashlynn. Dorian, still confused, hoped some useful information would be on the screen. There were loads of boxes with names like “test” and “curtain call.” It wasn’t until Ashlynn clicked on “test” and hit the play button that he realized what it was.

It was a music app.

Ashlynn hit the play button at the top of the screen and the song started. It was pretty simple. There was a drum sequence that was pretty repetitive and a piano and guitar duo. He listened to the music and ran it through his song repertoire. He didn’t recognize it.

“What song is this?” he asked after it ended abruptly. “Is this what you’re so excited about?”

“You’ll be excited about it in a second,” said Ashlynn. “I wrote it.”

“What?” he asked. “You… play? How? You were at work.”

“No, not at all,” said Ashlynn. “This app lets you write music.”

Dorian’s confusion instantly melted into pure excitement.

“What? How?” he asked, now eagerly facing the device wondering how to work it.

“Super easy,” said Ashlynn. She proceeded to click a few buttons and gave Dorian a quick rundown tutorial of what she understood about the app. Things like how to change the speed – tempo – of the instruments as well as how to change the key the instruments played in. She even showed him how to add tracks for multiple instruments.

“And, get this,” said Ashlynn as she whisked herself out of the kitchen to go into the living area only to return a few seconds later with some kind of corded device that looked like headphones, but the end looked a little different.

Dorian frankly could care less about what the device was because he was shaking with excitement from the program app thing Ashlynn just showed him.

Finally – something he could use to write his own music. He’d written plenty of lyrics and songs, but never to actual music with instruments playing. His size finally wouldn’t keep him from living his dream!

Well…

Mostly…

“Okay! It’s all set,” said Ashlynn as she pushed the little knobby end of the headphone into the headphone jack.

“What’s set?” asked Dorian just as Ashlynn held the weird mesh end up to him, his self-pitying thoughts taking a back seat to this new setup.

“It’s a microphone,” said Ashlynn. “It’s a small mic that is more sensitive, so it’ll make the sound better quality than normal headphone microphones.”

Dorian’s jaw dropped.

“What? A real one?” he asked. The end was still relatively large like the end of a headphone which took both of his hands to hold up It was about the length of his arm and the end was a bit bulky. Still, it was incredible.

“Yeah, all real. We’ll need to get it set up on a stand or something, but you can sing into it and record your songs,” said Ashlynn, her smile radiating warmth and excitement.

At this, Dorian felt those thoughts come back into his head. His shoulders slumped – and Ashlynn noticed instantly.

“What’s wrong? Did I do something wrong?” asked Ashlynn.

“No… it’s… it’s perfect… It’s just.. no… no one will… hear it…” muttered Dorian, disappointment encasing his voice, speaking in between heaving sighs to keep himself composed. “Record, yes, but what good is it if no one can listen to it? Music is meant to be shared, and… like everything about us… it has to be kept a secret.”

Disheartened, Dorian looked at the screen and pressed a couple of buttons, letting the guitar play its set loop over and over.

Ashlynn bit her lip in obvious agreement. It was certainly a problem – especially if Dorian wanted to share his music. Being a Borrower with a very “human” interest was a challenge. He wanted to share his talent, and rightfully so, but it was risky for him to publish.

Or was it…

Ashlynn knew it would be a risk and tried thinking through the potentials and, thankfully, she had a few ideas. She just had to show Dorian her vision. It was a risk, but it felt like it was worth it.

“There might be a way, Dorian,” said Ashlynn. Dorian half scoffed and rolled his eyes.

“Yeah right. Unless you can make me grow or be human, it doesn’t matter. My music isn’t going to see the light of day without revealing our kind. It’s just a fact.”

She reached past Dorian and exited out of the app and then opened her camera.

“Dorian, look at the camera and tell me who is bigger,” said Ashlynn as she tilted the phone to have them both in frame. Dorian rubbed the side of his neck, looking dejected, and sighed.

“Is this a trick? Obviously you are,” said Dorian as he caught how he looked in the camera.

“No trick. Now,” Ashlynn said as she took a step back, leaving Dorian in the forefront of the camera while she was in the background. “Who is bigger now?” Dorian watched her instead of the camera, folding his arms defensively.

“Ashlynn, you just stepped backward. It doesn’t make me any less small,” said Dorian.

“You sure? Look at the camera again,” directed Ashlynn, eyes urging him on. Dorian was about to rill his eyes when he caught a glimpse of the point Ashlynn was trying to prove. With him standing closer to the camera, he and Ashlynn looked to be about the same height. The image was slightly blurry, but the picture didn’t lie.

“But… that…”

“It’s perspective. The camera doesn’t know the difference between our heights – and neither will anyone else unless you tell them. Look,” said Ashlynn as she stepped back up to the counter and leaned over, picking up her phone with one hand and habitually laying the other palm up just behind Dorian. As her thumb typed feverishly, Dorian took a few steps back and sat against Ashlynn’s upturned palm.

The Borrower teen’s mind was still reeling from what he just saw from the camera lens. He hadn’t thought about it like that before – that perspective could change his size.

“Here, Dorian, what do you see?” asked Ashlynn as she carefully lifted the hand Dorian was sitting in and brought it by her chest so Dorian could see the phone from her perspective. Dorian readjusted so he sat in the palm of her hand cross-legged rather than legs dangling off the leg and hooked his arm around her thumb.

The screen was filled with song after song, but something Dorian noticed after a minute of Ashlynn scrolling was that they all had different doodles set as a profile picture, not an actual photo, and silly or obscure usernames. Only a few had their own name on their profile.

“No one knows these users. They’re just content creators – anonymous musicians,” said Ashlynn. “And you could be one of them. Dorian, you can get your music out there and no one needs to know who you are. They’ll only know what you show.”

Dorian was absolutely speechless.

Mind blown and short circuiting. He hadn’t thought about it like this. He thought humans always found out about people who tried to keep things a secret. They were curious after all. He didn’t know how to even come close to describing how he felt.

His heart was fluttering in his chest nervously. His entire body felt electrified with excitement. His breath shook as he inhaled and exhaled, ears ringing slightly.

Ashlynn continued speaking.

“Dorian, we can do this for you. WE can get it all set up before you go back ho… Dorian? You okay?” Ashlynn looked down to her palm to see Dorian visibly shaking. Her heart sank. Was he having doubts? Did he not think he was good enough? Whatever the reason, she needed to make this right.

“Hey… hey, I’m… I’m sorry.” Ashlynn set down her phone and curled her fingers slightly around Dorian’s form as she reached up with her other hand and began stroking the teenage Borrower’s back lightly. “Dorian, I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to upset you or press. I just thought…”

Dorian spun around, still seated, and threw his arms around the thumb she was using to stroke his back, squeezing with all his might. For several seconds, Ashlynn let Dorian shake. Initially, her heart sank, worried she had gone to far. It wasn’t until he looked up into her blue-grey eyes that she could see that it wasn’t fear or him being upset.

He was excited. All she saw in his pale blue eyes of her miniature musician was pure, overwhelmed excitement.

“Thank you, Ashlynn. I… don’t even know what to say. I… thank you,” said Dorian. He drew his legs closer into a full body hug of her thumb. Ashlynn’s heart, absolutely gushing over the teen, could only breathe a sigh of relief and smile. Since their talk, things had gone beyond smooth between them, like they had never parted. Thick as thieves once again, they eventually retreated to the couch in the living room to decide usernames and passwords.

Ashlynn and Dorian both decided that as long as they kept Soren in the loop and he hand no major qualms with it, Dorian could start publishing his music instantly.

They constructed a few names Dorian liked that were a play off of his name, such as So-Do-Rian, but ultimately thinking that Dorian Walker, as in wall walker to honor him as a Borrower, would probably be best. It also sounded like a “human” name, which would keep suspicion to a minimum if the question ever arose.

While they talked, Dorian kept clearing his throat. Was it emotion? He didn’t think so. For the past few days, he couldn’t quite shake a little cough in the back of his throat.

The entire Borrower family had a cough the past few days actually… as had the entire Borrower colony.

And while Dorian and Ashlynn sat on the couch picking out names to hide Dorian’s “secret identity” online, Rey was rushing through the walls to the secure line in the kitchen – with a feverish and coughing Mayzie on his back.

Rey had seen this before…

And he was scared…

Mayzie was slumped over in her pack which was firmly secured on Rey’s back.

Soren hadn’t made it back yet.

Mayzie whimpered as Rey grabbed hold of the line and slid down as fast as possible.

Hopefully, Ashlynn would know what to do. She had to know.

Little did he know this was a sad sign of things to come…

1. Yureru Haru: Unfortunately quite shaky. Not my favourite performance of the song. I feel like she is always a bit nervous in the beginning of events like this. Shin’s piano arrangement is beautiful though XD MC: She is talking about her album. Seems like she is still in the recording stage and also writing lyrics. 2. Flag: Still a bit shaky but definitely better. At the end she got quite fierce, loved it. Really enjoying those piano versions a lot. Shin has done a great job arranging them. MC: Yuuka joins Wakana for the live section after all. But apparently she is singing by herself...Interesting. Meh...I hope we’ll get a collab too. I am not a fan of her as a solo artist. 3. Inside Your Heart: A FJ Yuuka song by Yuki Kajiura. Don’t think I’ve ever heard it before. Very YK-esque. Okay I guess but I just can’t bring myself to like her voice 4. Colours of the Wind (Pocahontas): Ohhh, I LOVE the song. And Yuuka’s version is actually really good. Her voice is too cutesy for a proper ooomph factor but it kinda works. *sobs* Wish Wakana had joined her for this. MC: Aww, Wakana was brought to tears by Yuuka’s performance. And yes, we are finally getting a collab. 5. Yasashisa ni Tsutsumareta nara (Ghibli): Not my preferred Ghibli choice but it certainly works for Yuuka’s voice. Wakana is trying to make her voice match Yuuka’s cutesy singing style. Doesn’t quite work in my opinion T_T But towards the end their harmonising got better.

Wakana sings “Happy Birthday” for Yuuka and staff members bring out a fancy cake. And a present by Wakana from beauty brand “Officine Universelle Buly”. Cute how Wakana tries to read the French birthday greeting. XD It’s a hand creme, a cute lid and a gorgeous comb with Yuuka’s name engraved on it. Wakana has a white one for herself. Apparently it was recommended by Aimer who has the same comb as well. They reflect about their early days together from 20 years ago. Some lovely anecdotes about fancy parasols and green pea soup. Wakana’s current favourite food is kimchi, nori and cheese. She also loves nuts and prosciutto. Now Wakana does some Zelda fangirling. She has recently been into the game. Wakana outs herself as heavy drinker XD. No, just kidding. She talks a lot about all her favourite liqueurs. They are thinking about having some fancy wine for their next event. Wakana wants a camera for vlogging. Or at least a gimbal. Yes please! I love Hikaru’s vlogs, I am sure Wakana would make interesting vlogs too.
