Ballad of the Ringbearers, Pt. 2
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In which I have reworked the Muckess from that She-Ra episode into a Ringbearer whose claim to fame was the first Sorcerer’s Quest, the first official Mage Emblem, and stopping the Trollan Civil Wars. On that last one, long story short, in this AU Gorpo killed the other Overlords, and after he was banished (in this version by He-Ro, the Elders, and the Oracle) and the Oracle was trapped on Preternia, factions rose up on Trolla and started fighting for power (among them a certain cult that’ll be mentioned below).
She’s the only Ringbearer to ever have been an Overlord, mainly because the citizens asked her to be. After her passing, her successors in both roles realized that the jobs should be kept separate.
As for her husband, Blim, he still exists but he’s a toymaker that just wants to spread joy. The two loved each other very much and had a set of twins.
Anyway, on to the next Ringbearer:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And then there’s the song mage of the Ringbearers, Ero-Dee!
Normally song mages don’t do Sorcerer’s Quests, but Ero-Dee did one for kicks and ended up with the Oracle Ring. Naturally, the Unnamed Order (first formed at the beginning of the Civil Wars, was well on its way to taking over until Foosabella came along, and then went on to cause trouble for her and her crew) decided he was a threat and started gunning for him.
Anyway, he was the first Ringbearer to actually kill a Destroying Angel (Foosabella had driven her off before, but hadn’t figured out a way to get rid of her for good). This is the origin story of the Horn of Evil and the Ringbearer-Destroying Angel rivalry, and he’d end up fighting a few more DAs before his passing.
He was also interested in enriching and protecting traditional Trollan culture, and passing things down to the next generation. Trollan artists of all kinds (art, music, dance, etc.) found him an inspiration.
Anyway, coloring these things was a pain and a half, but I have two more Ringbearers to cover, so this’ll be continued in the next post.

This idea I had related to how Orko’s basically “orphaned” from his franchise’s homeworld due to rights issues.
So it seems Orko’s basically stripped away from every single other Trollan, not just in-canon, but now also out-of-canon. Mattel seems to own his rights...but not the rights of every other character, placing them with the Filmation library’s rights instead, because of how they were created (so, guessing with DreamWorks?). So, I had this idea for a combo of a workaround, and also because it’s a series I’d really like to see:
Make a series just set on Trolla. Make it kind of like Ewoks or Droids, this kind of vein. I’d say make Montork, Dree Elle, and Snoob the “heaviest hitters” of main characters. A lower-stakes series, skewing slightly to a younger audience than current MotU, but not too childish. Probably not a concurrent plot series, but maybe with a tiny thread going through the episodes that doesn’t effect the major plots of episodes. Dr. Zoog would be the biggest antagonist, Prankster a recurring minor one, Yukkers just a “plot problem” that’s not inherently antagonistic. So a fun time for all. But here’s the trick I had:
Orko is never directly mentioned.
There will be talk of a great Trollan wizard that is stuck in another dimension. He’s Dree Elle’s boyfriend. He’s Montork’s nephew and best student. He’s the person Snoob tries to be better than. He’s Squonge’s best friend. He’s the worst threat to Dr. Zoog’s plan that’s ever been had. Make it so obvious that it’s Orko, but never show that it’s Orko, at least not directly.
And that’s my idea on how the Trollans can be given relevancy again.

I got way too many ideas for that Trollan "what if" series, I had to keep going. XD This round is "secondary protagonists", not as major as the ones in the first picture, but still pretty recurring, and on the side of the heroes. This is where I decided the "gender flipping" could come into play. Considering how Trollans are pretty male-heavy in canon, I felt like that flipping some characters, mainly minor/hardly used ones, would work well. I went with Squonge, to go with a more "major" one, and then full-on taking a background character and changing them up. Torden's meant as the nameless Trollan Guard from "Dree Elle's Return". Yukkers is Dree Elle's little brother. Far too young for both a title and a symbol, he's in the Trollan Magic Training School, basically the Trollan equivalent of elementary school. Thanks to their parents having such major and busy jobs, Dree Elle is almost always taking care of Yukkers for the weekend. While she loves her little brother, she's often at her wits end with him too. Because Yukkers is a prankster. Sure, he's good in school, and knows what he's doing with magic, but he would rather use these skills to pull pranks on others. Much to the ire of his tidy older sister, Yukkers loves all things gross and kind of creepy. From bringing creatures into the house to mud to Trash Pile Trollan trading cards, he is often the reason Dree Elle's house is never as clean as she'd appreciate it. Squonge the Innovative never felt like she fit in with other Trollans. Skilled at magic, sure, but her interests were always in machinery, considered a weird and kind of taboo subject in Trolla. Always shy, she still wanted to make friends, even though that was never an easy task for her. So, she made up fantastic stories. Of course, basically nothing happened in real life in these stories, and it often got her in trouble, but it gave her attention, though not often the best. Despite this, she somehow managed to become the best friend of The Lost Trollan. Despite different magic tracks, they were ridiculously close friends, and he turned out to be one of the biggest confidence boosts Squonge needed. Despite still being considered "the weird one" due to her love of technology, she's using her skills to try and bring The Lost Trollan back. While on friendly terms with Dree Elle, she's also a bit jealous of The Lost Trollan's girlfriend, but she'd never say this. Conversely, Dree Elle is also somewhat jealous of The Lost Trollan's best friend, another thing she's never said. Torden the Steadfast is a recent graduate of the Trollan Police Academy. The daughter of Warden Umpty, she was quickly put in a high position (not due to her father's nepotism, mind you), and now is the head guard of the Artifact Vault. Honestly, she's really nervous about this prospect. This is such a big job for her, and she's pretty sure she's going to botch it. While a lot like to think "nothing ever happens" in this job, she's certain everything happens in it. She's certain that something is going to be stolen, and all the blame will be put onto her. While tempted to look at the vast array of items that might be contained in these vaults, she's terrified of accidentally causing something catastrophic. After all, that Cosmic Storm years ago was such a bad one, what if something else worse happens if she just touches the wrong thing? She has found herself somewhat dragged into the cause of The Lost Trollan, but is unwilling to try any of the artifacts to try and help, despite a strong knowledge of them. Session 1: Sat 24 June 2023
The town of Otari is known for its lumber, and its slide-like innovations which are used to get the lumber on board ships.
Tumblr media
We meet in Wrin’s Wonders. Wrin is a half elf tiefling, like Nadia. She is from a village that was attacked by demons. She set up shop here because she collected so much shit it got too heavy to carry it with her all the time. She says she doesn’t like being inside buildings. She also doesn’t like corners, hence her outdoor shop:
Tumblr media
She draws our attention to an object that we can’t quite see. Nadia thinks she can see a faint blue glow above the trees to the north west. She points it out to the others.
Are we aware of the history of this town? There’s a nursery rhyme…
500 years ago in Absalom there was a powerful magical family. They were prominent in society but had made pacts with great evil. Youngest scion was called Valkora. Family’s secrets discovered and family thrown out of city. Moved here. V. built a lighthouse and swore revenge on Absalom. A party of adventurers followed and killed her. Party rogue was lost in process.
In time Valkora will return, according to legend…
Wrin has been out there, there are definitely ruins. The lighthouse is supposed to be ruined, it hasn’t been active in hundreds of years. So what is the blue glow…? Would we be happy to go and investigate it? Joto doesn’t want to go near water. Skabb whispers in Grabby-Cat’s ear and they both nod. Sprocket asks what a lighthouse is. Skabb offers Joto a treat; he agrees to go. Luna makes up her mind to be difficult about it next time we are asked to go somewhere, in order to be offered a treat.
We follow the path she points us toward for about 20 minutes and find ourselves in marshland. Skeeters, yuck. Ruins in the marsh. Foggy and dim, even though it’s early morning. Above is a monument - a lighthouse. Skabb expects corpses floating in the water.
Skabb sneaks forward and hides in the bushes. She finds a tasty slug. Hartvig goes and looks at the doors; they look rotten. The frame collapses in as soon as he touches the handle. Mould and mildew, green and black smears on the walls. Collapsed chairs, foul-smelling grey lumps. Cobwebs festoon the ceiling.
Joto opens the other door to similar effect. Sprocket asks Hartvig for a biscuit; sadly he doesn’t have any. We do have a few days’ worth of provisions from Wrin. Sprocket announces that he has to eat food because he’s magical, and not clockwork; and he gives Hartvig a shin-hug.
We all stealth forward.
We hear high-pitched squeaking; it seems to be talking to us. There is a lot of giggling. Joto looks around.
Hartvig recognises the grey stuff as mitflit dung. These are distant cousins of goblins:
Tumblr media
Skabb hides behind Hartvig’s legs, and sneaks a treat into his pocket. She is spotted by the mitflits! She can understand the squeaking. The mitflits invite her to partake of the delicious grey 'pixie mud' on the floor! Skabb laughs and tells them she’s a fairy, and she has some fairy mud for them to try. Do pixies like these slugs? She holds one up. More ‘pixie mud’ is slung at her from above.
“The fucking cheek.”
Among the spiderwebs above, she can make out shapes; she thinks these might be the mitflits. They are about fifteen feet up. She casts Tanglefoot to try and capture one. She doesn’t want to hurt it, only grab it. Her attack misses, though. There is a yelp, and now that the voices have stopped pretending to be pixies, they are deeper, guttural.
Skabb hears, “Nasty fat fairy tried to catch me!”
Skabb has found her people; she might just stay here.
Initiative!
Skabb tries to intimidate one of the mitflits into telling her who they are working for. It works; Boss Squong?
Skwarng?
Skrawng.
Skabb kills the last one. Yay! She takes its eyeballs in case Grabby-Cat gets hungry.
She nips out the front door and grabs some dirt, making it into a plaster. It helps wounds to heal. It doesn’t work, but Hartvig casts Heal on everyone. He looks in his pocket and finds an unexpected treat; he gives it to Sprocket.

Okay. OKAY. I know I have been posting a lot about Orko recently, but there’s one thing that has been bugging me that I need to type out now because the rant that has been slowly heating up in my brain’s crock pot is finally finished.
What’s with the ring?
Tumblr media
In the 109th episode of the Filmation series, Man-at-arms identifies that Squonge, who has a lying problem, is telling the truth about Orko’s kidnapping because of this ring on the forest floor that he apparently gave Orko for his birthday.
I have so many questions.
Why did Duncan give him a ring? This is Man-at-arms we’re talking about, it seems so weird for him to be handing out jewelry as gifts. And if Duncan gave him a ring, you’d think it’d be a gadget that has some practical, technical use, but it’s not.
Weirder still, it’s specified to be a magic ring. Where did Duncan get it? What does it do? How is it magical? It’s so weird to have Duncan of all characters be interacting with magical objects in that capacity, implying he went out and sought one with the intent to give to Orko?
Furthermore, it’s instantly identifiable as Orko’s ring, everyone sees it and they’re like, ‘Wow. That’s definitely Orko’s ring, and he would never drop it, something bad must have happened!’ And there’s also the implication that Orko takes this with him everywhere. Why?
It bugs me so much.
I know the writers just needed a generic object for Orko to drop to keep the plot moving forward. I know that. But the problem is it’s canon now, and it’s such an oddly specific thing that I feel compelled to fanangle it into my version of MOTU and invent an explanation for it.
The best I can guess is it has some kind of cultural significance? Is this a thing people do on Eternia? Do you give rings to mages? Why would Duncan specifically feel compelled to do this, being a person so distanced from magic? Help?

Someday, there will be a verse about you in a children's song. Just be as awesome as the people we just sang about, haha.
On another note, I initially went a direction of Bahru, Squonge, and the kids speculating on what Orko's great deeds would be, but it wasn't really feeling right, and it's best for Orko himself to speculate about it at a later time.
Later that night...

FYI, Squonge is talking about the Flight Academy he goes to. Also, I'm toning that "lying" character trait way down, so he might merely be exaggerating a bit here about an actual event he was involved in.

And here's a look at a very bad string of days that Trolla had back in the day. I call it the Five Days of Wrath here, but I dunno, maybe someone else could come up with a better name.
Basically it's when Trolla was blindsided by the return of the Destroying Angel (after it was believed that Masde had ended that whole deal), and everyone was scrambling to get rid of him. There was a pretty high death toll, to say the least.
Montork's fight with the Destroying Angel is famous around Trolla, considering he's a non-Ringbearer who put up a decent fight, but Montork himself does not like talking about it. Someday I'd like to go deeper into it, but not today.
And to finish things off...

Little callback to this.

This was just a little project I wanted to work on, a few "headcanon redesigns" of the Trollans in He-Man, mainly their Filmation designs, purely to have a "balanced" design for me to work with. ^_^
In the case of the Crimson Council,  Blayzam is the only one with a confirmed name (that might not even be spelled like that), so I gave some "placeholder" ones for the other two.
Some of my thoughts and changes under the “read more”.
Orko -Masked: Orko I haven't changed really at all, really just "streamlined" himself and made his colors a bit less garish. -Unmasked: Even though I gave him hair in the Cosmic Storm AU design, I decided to keep him bald like that picture in the episode guide...just "cuter" than that. Dree Elle -Masked: Aside from brightening her colors, I decided to make her robe a bit more dress-like and cranked up the raspberry coloring, to look closer to her comic book design...just not as overdone. I also gave her light yellow sclera, since I think the girl Trollans deserve yellow eyes, too! -Unmasked: I liked the eyeshadow idea that I gave her in the Cosmic Storm AU, so I kept that idea. Montork -Masked: Montork I decided to give a pretty big change. I know he's the Academy of Magic head, but I also have this sort of "purposely looks disheveled" headcanon, since he feels like one of those "feigning weakness" kind of characters, to surprise his opponents. He would have a much nicer outfit as well, but I just wanted to focus on that one. -Unmasked: Nothing much to say, I kept him close to Orko in facial features, though I decided he should get eye bags as part of his age.
Yukkers -Masked: I haven't changed much on him, though I made sure his hears were visible. -Unmasked: I went with freckles and a missing tooth to fit his young age. Squonge -Masked: The big case was trying to make him not look as Orko-close. I ended up drooping his eyes, moving his scarf ends to his front instead, and browning his robe, which I gave a jacket zipper to. I swapped his goggles to a rounder shape to make him feel rounder too. -Unmasked: I also wanted to make his unmasked design look less like Orko's, so that's why I made his jaw squarer and gave him hair. Snoob -Masked: Snoob I really didn't change much, just streamlined his outfit a bit more, and gave him some different color tones. -Unmasked: This comes straight from the Cosmic Storm AU. I kept the messy hair and freckles to keep him looking younger.
Doctor Zoog -Masked: I wanted to push towards the "scientist" part of him, so I turned his robes into a lab coat and adding more mechanical elements to him. He's the only one I didn't give eye-shines to, due to his design and personality. -Unmasked: The metal plate I gave his head was due to me thinking he'd be a self-experimenter, and this was one of the results...at least, after he made sure okay for him to use... Big Uggo -Masked: I didn't change really anything with his standard design, just adjusted it a bit. -Unmasked: This was where I had fun. I felt like Doctor Zoog would be using Big Uggo as his first test subject, which is a part of the skull plate, but also the transfusion tubes I gave. Wokrapanwooki/"Prankster" -Masked: I really didn't change much for him, just made his face closer to the style I'm giving the other Trollans, though I did turn the purple strip into an actual scarf, just to make it obvious how much his culture's case spits in the face of other Trollans'. -Unmasked: This is redundant, but I just wanted both a space-filler and to also use a chance for his hatless case.
Blim, The High Muck Muck -Masked: I didn't change much, but I modified his cape  and robe trim to have the spots. I also deepened his colors to get some purple tones, purely for royalty tones. -Unmasked: Nothing much to say, I gave him a bit of hair to keep him a bit unique from Montork. -Foosabella, The Muckess -Masked: Like her husband, I deepened her color scheme to keep her in purple tones. I also changed her crown puff so it didn't look like a butt. XD -Unmasked: This was fun, I wanted to make her look a bit "over-dolled" up with her makeup. Warden Umpty -Masked: Really nothing to say here, just modifying his colors a bit. I moved his keys to the other side, and also expanded his helmet ear pads lower, since his ears wouldn't be showing anyways with the helmet. -Unmasked: Originally he was also getting a combover, but it wasn't looking nice here.
Blayzam -Masked: Him, along with the remainder of the Council, I gave the green scarves from "Trouble in Trolla", purely for uniqueness. His hat's from "The Greatest Magic", though. -Unmasked: The hair was a last minute addition, but I think it helps him a bit more in uniqueness. ???/"Cordovan" -Masked: Nothing much changed, though I reinterpreted the bottom line on his robe as a fully different stripe color. -Unmasked: Originally, his mouth was hidden, but it wasn't working as well with the mustache addition. ???/"Amaranth" -Masked: Him I have the least to say about, since I didn't change really much for, just modifying the colors a bit. -Unmasked: This one's another case where I have really nothing to say for him.

This was an AU idea that came to me. What if the cosmic storm in Trolla played out a little differently? Pulled from their customs a little earlier, the storm a lot stronger...?
Dropped into the Eternian Palace, years before the birth of the twins, was Orko. Adopted by the king and queen as a son officially thanks to such a young age, he in turn became a prince by adoption. Too young to know of his past, and having no clue he could tap into magic, he was raised in a palace where tech was the focus over magic. Since he never knew he was meant to be floating instead of walking, his legs were declared "weak" and given braces. His short size meant he was given a blaster cuff and shield for protection, more reliable than his canon self's magic. Unfortunately, due to his weak state, he's still an "unsure heir", so Adam and Adora were still born, and they were still considered the chosen ones. Thankfully for him, he was still allowed to be privy of their secret. During the same cosmic storm, another Trollan child was brought to Eternia...just into the wrong palace. Dree Elle was dropped at Snake Mountain. Here, she was looked after by various Evil Warriors in their twisted ways, though primarily Evil Lyn, letting her magic skills flourish. Her smaller size means she has yet to face against the Heroic Warriors, or know about the existence of another Trollan in a very close vicinity. Having abilities steeped from other Evil Warriors has helped her knowledge banks, however. She has basic animal speaking skills, but the only one that is successful is towards Scarg, a gift from Whiplash. Rather than the pun-driven hamminess of the majority of the Evil Warriors, she is icily polite, in a way that feels more like you've just been offended by a compliment. In a universe alternate to both Trolla and Eternia is Etheria. In the Fright Zone, domain of the Evil Horde, was where Squonge was transported. While one would think Shadow Weaver being such a force of magic would mean that his natural abilities could be unlocked, unfortunately, Hordak got to him first. Too powerful already to use science to evolve him further, he instead became a mechanical test subject. Despite his size, his powers have been increased tenfold. Despite this, he keeps feeling this weird "draw" of wanting to learn Shadow Weaver's techniques in his mind. Due to being found earlier than her birth, along as having Hordak as a "father", he came to view Adora, during her stint in the Horde, as a little sister. While not having attacked the Rebels at all, his biggest dislike of them is the fact they "took his little sister away from him". Unexpectedly, years after the first cosmic storm, a second, slightly weaker storm, erupted in Trolla. This one only took one child, at the age that the other three were taken, and dropped him off in Etheria. This child was Snoob. He was quickly found by Madame Razz, back when the Rebellion was a small flicker. Having a much more humble personality thanks to the way he was raised, Snoob's been steeped in magic fully, letting his abilities grow strong at a young age, also making him much more powerful than his original self could have thought of being. Adora has recently joined the Rebellion, and he's a bit unsure about what he should think about her. All he does know is that She-Ra is a good person, but why does his mother seem to know something he doesn't about her?
