This week for Houseplant Spotlight, I wanted to feature my lovely and easygoing aluminum plant (Pilea cadierei). I actually got this plant a few years before the Great Houseplant Hyperfixation of 2023...I'm not sure when, but I'm pretty sure it was before the pandemic. It started out as a little 4" cup that I got from the grocery store, and it survived a lot of very spotty care before growing into this beauty. (I realize there's nothing here for scale, but that's an 8" pot). The leaves really do have a silvery sheen to them that is quite attractive.
I'm pretty sure I picked it because the tag said "low light". That's not exactly true-- it likes at least 4 hours of indirect light per day. Indirect light is pretty much all I've got in my house (not counting my grow lights). This guy currently lives on the bottom rack of my bathroom plant stand, where it has really been enjoying the extra humidity. I've also had luck growing them in pots with water reservoirs.
Another nice thing about the aluminum plant is that it grows from cuttings super-easily. It can get a little leggy, and pruning it helps it to grow nice and dense. I like put my cuttings in water (I use mason jars because I have a lot of them) until they grow significant roots, and then I plant them up. I took a few cuttings of this recently and they've all been growing beautifully. One of my current favorite things to do is to grow plants from cuttings, transplant them into throwaway cups, and put them out on a "free plants" table.
Anyway, it's just a nice plant that's very pretty and hard to kill. It's also non-toxic to pets. If someone offers you one, I highly recommend it!

"UNION ORGANIZERS ARRESTED SAID 'IMPEDING WAR EFFORT'." Toronto Star. October 30, 1943. Page 2. --- Aluminum Plant at Shawinigan Falls Partly Closed ----- BELONG TO A.F. OF L. ---- Shawinigan Falls, Que, Oct. 29 - (CP) - Philip Cutler and Jean Jodoin, organizers for the American Federation of Labor, today were arrested on charges of impeding the war effort in connection with a partial strike of Aluminum Company of Canada employees in two plants here.
Both men were remanded until Nov. 3 without bail, after pleading not guilty to the charges. They appeared in court in Three Rivers a short time after their arrest here.
The two labor leaders were arrested by Royal Canadian Mounted Police. The arrests came six days after the outbreak of a strike at the two plants over the number of aluminum pots each workman should attend.
The strike started at midnight Saturday, resulting in the "freezing" of three or four pot-lines in Plant 2 here. Workmen who remained at their jobs kept the potlines of Plant 1 in operation.
Since that time, soldiers have broken up picket lines in front of the plants and a number of the 2,500 employees of the two plants have returned to work.
Those returning- their number in doubt because of conflicting statements by company and union officials - did so after the National Syndicate of Aluminum Workers who have a working agreement with the company, had said that men could be found to keep the plants in operation if picket lines were opened.

this has been the best winter for my plants ever. knock on wood, but i haven't lost a single one ;-; and i've been seeing new growth like crazy!! it feels like every day i wake up and see a new leaf emerging somewhere. that's WILD for a midwest winter lmao but i think i'm at the point where i know my plants well enough that even when i'm not being hyper-vigilant they can still thrive, which is soooo nice because i've been focusing more on other hobbies lately. i love that my plants have become more of an ambient feeling of joy rather than a chore (a chore that i enjoy of course, but it can sometimes be overwhelming). i feel like a sim with a +3 beautiful environment moodlet 🥺

Plant Update! (another mini)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Spent a bit of time with my plants today, I don’t have the patience right now to type out a full update but among other things I repotted one of my sunflower babies, fully cleaned, replaced the soil, and repotted my aluminum plant, AND here’s a bonus teaser of one of my new lovely plants I was given from my birthday. (I’ll do a proper photo shoot with her when she’s settled.)

"Arvida Faces Famine Threat," Montreal Star. May 12, 1943. Page 3.
---
Slide Blocks Rail Line; Food Plane Delayed
----
CITIZENS of Arvida, including the 11,000 workmen employed at the plant of the Aluminum Company of Canada there, may know the true meaning of famine shortly unless an airplane is able to reach the town carrying supplies of meat, butter, yeast and eggs. Arvida has been cut off from supply points since Saturday by a landslide on the Canadian National Railways line running from Quebec to Chicoutimi.
The slide occurred at Talbot, Que., 64 miles north of Quebec. C.N.R. officials said no freight trains have been running since the slide wrecked 159 feet of track, and added that a new temporary track would not be completed until next Saturday or Sunday at the earliest.
Company officials have asked Canadian Pacific Airways to send a plane with 1,169 pounds of meat and 1,000 pounds of butter, eggs and yeast. Last reports were that the aircraft was still at the Quebec airport.
Comments on the possible food shortage were varied but it was reliably reported that it was very serious. One C.P. Airways official said: "People are actually going hungry."
Accumulated food reserves in the Chicoutimi-Arvida district are nearly sufficient to meet all present needs, but there will be a shortage of fish and perhaps meat within a few days unless new stocks are brought in, a survey revealed today. No immediate danger of famine in the district was foreseen, however.

Until I saw this at the farmer's market I thought mine were begonias! They were sold to me as begonias. Oh well. Still neat!
