Come Over
Summary: Dan and Phil's relationship is blossoming, but Dan is terrified to let Phil into his home, so he keeps pushing him away. He however, slowly learns that Phil is someone who could make his house into a home. Based loosely on "Come Over" By Noah Kahan.
Warnings: None, slight angst but nothing bad, pure fluff
Read on AO3
Dan zipped up his backpack with a quiet sigh, setting it beside the door of Phil’s bedroom. It was his last night of staying with Phil and his family for the third time in three months; and he didn’t want it to end. He loved being able to go outside at night, laying in the grass and watching the stars. He loved that the Lesters had just accepted him as their own, like he had always been around. He loved even more, that being with Phil truly felt like home.
Phil walked into the bedroom, brushing his teeth with foam dripping down his chin. He tried to say something to Dan, causing more foam to spill from his mouth and onto the green carpet beneath him. The brunette couldn’t help but laugh at his best friend, handing him a tissue quickly.
“Maybe go finish brushing your teeth before you speak Philly.” Dan teased, shaking his head as Phil darted back into the bathroom.
A couple of minutes later, Phil walked back into the room with a shy smile, “I was trying to say that I don’t want you to leave.” he explained, sitting next to Dan on the bed.
The younger of the two smiled sadly and leaned his head against Phil’s shoulder, “and I don't want to leave, but I have to. Hopefully it won't be long before I come back. I’ll have enough money for tickets saved up again soon.” he hummed, thinking about his savings.
“Perhaps I can come to yours this time!” Phil suggested with a smile, “I wanna meet your family and see your town.”
Dan felt a nervous tremor run down his spine, making him feel hollow and cold, “um… yeah but I really like coming to yours. Besides I don't want you spending money on tickets, I know you’re saving to get a flat.”
Phil raised his eyebrows at Dan, moving to wrap his arm around the younger’s shoulders, “I have plenty of money saved, and Youtube is taking off. I’m actually making money from it now. I don’t mind paying to come see you Dan.”
Despite his anxiety, Dan felt himself melt against Phil in relaxation. It was their last night together for awhile, he couldn’t bring himself to ruin it with his fruitless arguments. Instead of arguing, Dan closed his eyes and nodded against Phil’s shoulder; feeling the other's arm wrap gently around his midsection.
“Let’s get some rest, yeah? It’s already midnight and I know you hate sleeping on the train home.” Phil hummed, guiding Dan into the bed and under the warm duvet.
Dan quickly forgot his previous worries, instead staring into Phil’s ocean blue eyes with a smile, “I can’t believe I’m in bed with the AmazingPhil! Younger me would never believe that you even replied to my comments.” he teased, kissing Phil’s cheek.
Phil rolled his eyes fondly, “well you were very insistent… and cute. Of course I had to talk to you. It helps that you actually like a lot of the same things as me. And that you’re cute… wait I already said that.” He laughed, sticking his tongue out slightly from the right side of his mouth.
Dan  groaned and hid his face, feeling his cheeks heat beneath his own hands. He would never get used to Phil calling him cute, or beautiful, or anything really. He couldn’t believe that someone as perfect as Phil could see him in ways that he could never see himself.
“I am not cute Phil,” Dan argued weakly, making a pouty face before burying his face into Phil’s pale chest, taking a deep breath. He smelled like strawberries.
Phil laughed, making Dan’s head vibrate slightly with the movement, “you can’t argue that you’re not cute and then cuddle me!” He argued, pulling Dan closer and running meaningless patterns over the tanned man’s back, “try and sleep baby. Sweet dreams.”
Dan’s breathing quickly evened out with Phil holding him close. Sleeping beside Phil was always easy; sleep would always claim him before he knew it. He would always feel safe, comfortable and overall; warm. Phil was like his own personal ball of sunshine.
~
The next morning seemed to fly by in a complete blur. It was filled with goodbyes, “see you soons” and lots of hugs. Dan felt very loved by the entirety of the Lester family, but the hugs still surprised him a bit. What surprised him the most however, was when he was just about to leave them to board the train.
“Danny! Wait a second.” Phil had called, causing Dan to pause and turn around.
Phil ran and stopped in front of Dan, slowly tilting the younger’s chin up with shaky finger tips and staring into his eyes. Soon, their lips were touching and Dan fought back tears. They were kissing. Actually kissing. Dan felt a slow warmth fill his body, starting from his lips and trailing down to his tummy. It was as if Phil’s shining light filled him.
All too soon, Phil pulled back and rested his forehead against Dan’s, his cheeks covered with a blotchy redness, “Text me when you get home, okay?” he whispered to Dan before moving back so Dan could at last board.
Dan clambered into the train, the tears from earlier finally filling his eyes, but a shy smile still on his face. He could still feel the gentle caress of Phil’s lips on his and the warmth still filled him. The tears ran down his face freely as he hid in his own bubble; the world feeling brand new around him.
~
Dan walked up to his house slowly, sighing as he stared up at it. The front two windows always looked like they were sad, always drooping a bit. The paneling was worn and falling apart in some places. It had always seemed like the house was giving up on him, as Dan had given up on it. He shook his head as a wave of cold wind wrapped around him; a welcome from the sad house in front of him.
He walked in the door, still feeling the cold. The heating was probably broken again; he could easily see his breath inside the kitchen where he stood. He knew both of his parents were at work right now, and wouldn’t be home until later. He was grateful for that fact as he climbed the stairs, carefully avoiding the broken stair that he had shoved his foot through more than once. He glared at the cobwebs that covered the corners of the hallway where he stood and opened his bedroom door to set his bag down.
The brunette turned from his room and walked to the bathroom to wash his face before taking a nap; but when he tried to turn the water on, nothing happened. The pipes had frozen again. He groaned and turned to leave, accidentally stepping on a soft spot in the flooring and hearing a crack. Dan gasped and quickly moved his foot, glaring at the new hole in the floor.
He quickly retreated to the safety of his room, already feeling drained from the house around him. It always reminded him just how broken he was, how he was constantly right at the verge of falling apart. He could never protect anyone; never even keep himself together. His mind was constantly filled with cobwebs, reminders of who he could have been; who he should be. He felt empty and broken.
Dan used to fantasize about his family suddenly becoming wealthy. One day, they wouldn’t have to live without heating ever again. One day, we wouldn’t have to see his parents panicking when they didn’t know how to feed him for the week. One day, they would be the big house on the block. However, with age came clarity and reality replaced his useless dreams. He was never getting out, his parents were never getting out. Like the house that he had always called home; he would never be somebody that people wanted.
A few hours later, Dan was standing in the kitchen, making a big pot of soup for his mum and dad when they got home. He was still angry, still felt let down by the state of his life, but he could never hold that against his family. They were his everything; the reason that he knew strength, bravery and of course; love. The cold and broken house held a lot of love.
“Oh Daniel you’re home! I’ve missed you,” his mum smiled, pulling him into a hug, “the heating is broken, but your dad can make a fire.” she trailed off, looking into the lounge to see Dan had already made a fire, “oh dear, thank you so much. You didn’t have to do that, you definitely didn’t need to make dinner. But it smells delicious.”
Dan smiled in spite of himself and shrugged, “I knew you would be tired, and I felt bad for leaving for a week.” he hummed, stirring the soup.
His mum walked to the lounge, warming herself by the fire, “you don’t need to feel bad dear. I’m glad that you’re able to go see your friend. I would love to meet him one day.” she smiled, rubbing her hands together.
Dan bit his lip and nodded, “I would like that too. You and dad will love him, he’s really smart and creative. He has the stupidest sense of humor though. But it’s a little endearing. His family is really nice too, you and Kath would be best friends.” he ranted, feeling his cheeks heat up at his words.
“He does sound like a good lad, maybe one day he could come over here.” she suggested, making Dan tense.
“Yeah, he's just busy with work and such. I’ll ask him about it soon, okay mum?” he offered, draping a thick blanket around his mum’s shoulders while she nodded.
Not too much later, he was sitting on the lounge floor with his parents, watching an old movie on the TV that he wasn’t really paying attention to; instead he was in his mind. He really didn’t want Phil to see his state of living. He didn’t want to be judged by someone he truly cared about. The kids at school would always mock him for where he lived, as if he could help it. They didn’t even know how bad it really was at times; how could he possibly let Phil in?
 ~
Almost two months had passed since Dan had visited Phil, and he missed him terribly. They still talked everyday, but it just wasn’t the same. Dan really wanted to buy a train ticket and go visit the Lesters; but he couldn’t afford it. He was working extra hours at a local grocery store, making more money than ever before, but he was choosing to give it to his parents, so that they could get things around the house taken care of. They had already had the heating fixed, so no more frozen pipes. Things were slowly getting better around the house, and Dan was thankful; but he missed Phil.
Phil was still suggesting that he could come over, but Dan just couldn’t bring himself to agree. He was still too embarrassed to let someone as important as Phil see the decrepit state of his home.  He was crying himself to sleep, missing his best friend. But the wait would be only temporary, and he knew that. He just couldn’t stand the idea of Phil realizing that Dan wasn’t good enough. Daniel Howell wasn’t someone that people would want.
~
It was a cold day when Dan’s father got hurt on the job. He had fallen from a ladder and hit his head; he was in a medically induced coma so that he could heal. Dan was terrified as he sat in the hospital room, talking to his dad quietly while his mum was at work.
“Please be okay Dad. I don’t know what I would do without you. Or what mum would do without you. We love you, please don’t leave us.” Dan whispered, squeezing his dad’s hand.
Dan’s heart felt heavy and he felt sick. He couldn’t tell if it was worry, or the fact that he hadn’t eaten in well over twenty four hours. He couldn’t bring himself to eat when there was so much going on. His brown eyes filled with tears as he looked down at his dad. Someone he had looked up to his entire life, the strongest man he knew; was now broken like their home.
Without thinking about it too hard, Dan took out his cellphone and pressed the call button, thankful when Phil picked up on the second ring, “hey Dan, are you alright? How is your dad?” the older asked him, making Dan shake his head.
“Come over,” Dan whispered while more tears filled his eyes and trailed down his cheeks. That was all he had needed to say.
~
Hours later, Phil stood in Dan’s room, watching the brunette pace the room anxiously as he tried to think of what he wanted to say. Dan’s family had gotten good news, his father would make a full recovery, but it would take time and a lot of rest. Time was something that the Howell’s never seemed to have enough of. Not when work brought in money, and lack of money meant lack of food or utilities or anything they would need.
“I’m sorry Phil. I don’t know why I made you come here. I’m sorry about the cobwebs and the broken stair and everything. I hate that you have to see my house, it’s nothing special. It's falling apart and hell I don't remember when it didn’t look like this. We just don’t have much but-” Dan was interrupted by Phil’s lips on his, and he felt his body slowly relax.
When Phil pulled away, he whispered “Dan, don’t apologize. I have wanted to come over for such a long time. I feel like I can finally know the entirety of who you are. And I love you all the same; cobwebs and broken bits don’t matter. What matters is who you live with.” Phil smiled shyly, cupping Dan’s cheek.
Dan sniffed as tears trailed down his cheeks, “you… you love me?” he asked, staring at Phil in awe.
Phil hummed and nodded, pulling Dan into a tight hug, “Yes I do. And I want to help you and your family. My parents want to help too; they love you like their own Dan.” he whispered into Dan’s hair.
“I… I love you too Phil. I’m sorry for pushing you away for so long. I was just afraid you would see everything and realize that you didn’t want to waste your time with a fixer upper like me.” Dan explained, hiccuping against Phil’s neck while he cried.
Phil felt his own eyes fill with tears, and he quickly wiped them away, “You’re not a fixer upper, and I want you to be safe and happy. I want to give that to you more than anything. My parents want to come up here to help, we can help Dan. We want you and your family to be happy and safe. Please let us.” he whispered.
Dan paused, his mind struggling to take everything in. Phil loved him. The Lesters wanted to help the Howells. Phil was asking Dan’s permission to help. He was letting Dan make the decision. Without thinking too much harder, Dan nodded, “yes. You guys can help us.”
~
The next month was filled with a lot of changes. The first big change was a kitchen filled with food; the entire pantry was full for the first time ever. That was the first time Dan had seen his mum cry. The second big change seemed to happen overnight; it was in Dan’s parents. They seemed to be more at ease, smiling bigger and laughing louder. Dan had never seen them hug as much as they had been lately. The third biggest change was of course; the house. The cobwebs were now gone, and a small part of Dan missed them. They were familiar to him, but he knew holding onto that stress wasn’t good for him.
The stairs had been replaced, but Dan still caught himself avoiding the broken step that was no longer there. Most of the floor had been successfully replaced and the walls were in the process of being reinsulated. Phil’s youtube career was really taking off, with Dan right beside him. They were even getting offers from big companies, money seemed to be flowing in like Dan had never seen before.
“Phil, when are you going to get your flat?” Dan asked suddenly over the phone as he walked home from his grocery store shift. Spring was beginning to make the world around him more colorful again, the fresh scent of flowers lingered in the air.
“Actually Dan… I used most of my savings to help with your house. So it’s going to be a little longer than I had planned. But don’t get upset! I’m perfectly okay with waiting a bit longer.” Phil had explained a bit nervously, not sure how Dan would react.
Dan felt his heart sink a bit at that, but a part of him had expected that, “I’m not upset. I just feel a little bad, you were so excited to be on your own, with your own rules. And I was excited to visit you constantly.” He teased Phil happily, looking up at the blue sky above him.
Phil laughed at Dan quietly before stopping and becoming serious, “well, it’s going to be about six months before I actually move out now. But when I do, I don’t want you to visit. I want you… well I want you to live with me.” he whispered sheepishly.
Dan knew that his mouth was hanging open, and he closed it a couple of times before opening it again, “that sounds amazing Phil. I would love to create a home with you.”
“Did you just make an Amazingphil pun?” Phil laughed, shoulders relaxing at Dan’s reaction. “We can start looking at flats soon! When do you wanna start?” he asked excitedly.
The brunette hummed as he walked closer to his family home, smiling at the house. It was still a bit broken and worn, but it was lovely and safe; filled with memories of change and love. It was truly a beautiful home. Dan pushed the door open and stepped inside, kicking his shoes off before whispering, “why not now love? Come over.”

You perused the aisles, tracing your fingers across a few of the display chairs that were set up. The two men followed close behind you, occasionally stopping to examine something or other. You had a vague idea of what you wanted for your clinic or at least the feel of it. The real trick was finding the furniture that matched.
As you continued examining the chairs, a set caught your eye. The wood was a dark oak and the cushions were (f/c). They were a good size and weren’t too expensive. You took a seat, smiling as you did so. They were incredibly comfortable. You looked it over one more time before smiling and turning toward Dan and Phil.
“What do you guys think?” You asked. Phil tilted his head and shrugged.
“I mean… Wouldn’t rolly chairs be better for the desks?” He asked. Dan laughed and shook his head.
“For the waiting chairs in the lobby, you idiot.” He said. You too couldn’t help but laugh, and soon enough Phil joined in as well.
“Well, there’s no need to be mean.” He said. You took a quick photo of the product tag.
“I’ll probably get… 10 I think. That many will fit nicely against the wall. Which leaves end tables, desks, and desk chairs.”
“What about operation tables? That seems like something important.” Phil asked. You put your phone in your pocket and laughed.
“Yes, those are quite important but IKEA doesn't sell medical supplies like that.” You replied, starting to walk through another aisle. Dan snickered and you’re heart began to thump loudly in your ears. You were so easy, or was he just that charming?
“Is today a be mean to Phil day? Did I miss the memo?” He asked, fake pouting. You smiled and shook your head.
“Come on you oaf, we still have lots of things to buy.” You said. He sighed and trudged behind you, Dan following suit.
>>timeskip<<
You let out a loud exhale as you managed to finish loading all the furniture pieces into your car. You leaned against the side, the line of sweat on your brow quick to trickle down the rest of your face. Both Dan and Phil looked as equally exhausted as you felt.
“God, please tell me there’s no more heavy lifting,” Dan said, his hands on his knees. You chucked and checked your watch.
“Just moving them out of the car and into the clinic. First, though we’ve gotta stop by Home Depot to get some paint. Everything else I have to get from a specific shop that carries medical supplies. Thanks for your help so far but if you guys are done for the day then I won't mind.” You said, finally lowering your heart rate enough to deliver your sentence without any issues.
“We can stay and help more, we don’t mind,” Phil replied. Dan was still too winded to object. You shrugged and grabbed your keys from your bag.
“Alrighty then. It’s paint time boys.”
>><<
You sighed as you lugged the last of the paint tins into the clinic, leaving them on the floor of the main room.
“Guys… I don’t even wanna paint anymore. I think I’m just gonna nap on the floor.” You said as you sank down the wall. Dan sighed and did the same.
“I think you overestimated my abilities.” He said, leaning his head back.
“All of us.” Phil chimed in as he sat on the floor as well. You gave a small laugh.
“Thanks for keeping me company, you guys. I appreciate it.” You said, glancing between Dan and Phil.
“Oh stop it! Don’t get all mushy on us.” Phil replied jokingly.
“No, I’m serious! Today would’ve been such a drag without you two.” You said with a small smile.
“Well don’t count on the day not being a drag just yet. We’ve still gotta paint.” Dan chimed in. You sighed loudly.
“Yeah, I guess you’re right.” You groaned out as you stood up. You bent over the paint can and popped it open. You poured a decent amount into the paint tray before standing back up and stretching.
“I’ve got two rollers and a brush. Whoever takes the brush will have to tape and paint the edges and the rollers are pretty simple to use. Who wants what?”
“Well, you wasted no time,” Dan said with a laugh. You smiled and shrugged before offering your hand to Dan to help him up. He raised his eyebrows.
“I could still use the help.” You said in a sing-song voice. He rolled his eyes and grabbed your hand. You hoisted him up with surprising ease, which he was taken aback by as well. He stumbled on his feet slightly bumping into you before regaining his balance. You looked up at him and gave a sheepish smile.
“Sorry…” You practically whispered. Dan’s heart thumped so loudly he could've sworn you’d be able to hear it.
“No worries…” He replied, still staring down at you.
“So turns out I’m not so good at taping the edges of the walls,” You head Phil say. You backed away from Dan to see blue tape way too far from the wall to make a difference. You laughed and grabbed the tape from him.
“Grab a roller and I’ll work on the edges.” You said with a laugh. You slowly pulled the strip up and rolled up the used parts. You began to tape everything down properly before glancing over your shoulder. Dan had removed his jacket to prevent paint from getting on it and grabbed the roller. You turned back to the wall, and a funny feeling in your stomach started festering once again.
The painting was somewhat calming and you all worked together well. Dan and Phil painted separate walls while you painted the edges around the room. You whistled to yourself quietly as you did so.
“I think I’m finished.” You said, standing up to check that there weren’t any spots that you’d forgotten. Dan sighed and went to lean on the wall to take a break but you quickly grabbed his arm before he could.
“Wet paint!” You exclaimed. He looked between you and the wall before laughing.
“God that would’ve been terrible.” He replied. You laughed and stepped away from him, turning to Phil to see how he was doing. He finished up the last paint stroke and turned around, holding a thumbs up.
“I think we did it.” You said with a smile.
“Finally. My back is killing me.” Phil said, stretching and attempting to pop it.
“Thanks for the help. It would’ve taken ages for me to do it myself. Now all that's left is letting it dry and putting the furniture together. I’ll do that another day though.” You said. Dan curtly nodded his head.
“Good. I don’t think I could handle any more physical activity.”
“Here here.”

Spark - Dan & Phil
content: none! just fluff.
an: only keeping these up to look back at to see if I've ever improved. so weird to think about the space i was in when first writing these vs where i am now. depressing!
♤♤♤♤
Dan's POV:
"Dan! Hurry up!" I heard my boyfriend call to me. We were going to some place for our anniversary. Five years we've been together, and boy has it been the best five years of my life. I love him so much. He's saved me from doing anything stupid, and he knows that.
"Baaaabe!" I heard his voice get closer. I snapped from my thoughts and fixed my tie. "Come onnnnnnnn!" Chuckling, I opened the door and placed a quick kiss to his cheek.
"I'm ready babe." His eyes scanned me from head to toe, a small smile forming.
"You look handsome." He said, beaming.
"Same for you Philly." He giggled and grabbed my hand, pulling me towards and out the door of our flat, locking it behind him.
"I'm sure you'll love where we're going." With that, he grabbed my hand, interlocking our fingers and tugged me towards the sidewalk. There was a light dusting of snow falling down, and a blanket covering the London streets. It was Christmas Eve, and everyone was out doing couple things.
Phil, instead of taking me to his car, waited on the sidewalk until a carriage pulled up. "Philly, what is this?" His smiled widened, his grip tightened, and he pulled me up into the carriage before whispering something to driver.
"Why, it's all part of the surprise love." My heart fluttered and what he said. Love. We love each other. I love him so much. Even when I'm feeling down, he's there. He's always there. Whenever I'm having an episode, he's there to comfort me, and I love him for it.
After a thirty mintue ride, we stopped at a restaurant. Only it wasn't. There were fairy lights strung about everywhere, a Christmas tree sat in the middle, and there were people, waiters and waitresses I assume, walking around a smile plastered across their faces. It was perfect. The smell of cookies swarmed my senses, and I looked over at Phil who had a look of worry and hope in his features. "Well...do you like it?" He spoke quietly. I beamed, and nodded.
"Of course I do. It's amazing." Kissing him quickly, he led us over to a table near the back of the place.
"I love you Daniel."
"I love you more Phillip." He made a face and pouted at that name sticking out his bottom lip.
"You know I don't like Phillip." I couldn't help but smile at how cute he was being and booped his nose.
"And you know I don't like Daniel."
"Good point." This night was nothing but perfect. "But really...I love you."
"I know you do."
"No...like a lot..." Phil muttered and looked down at our intertwined fingers. "And I just...you've been there for me for as long as I can remember. Whenever I would feel useless, which I am don't even try to argue Daniel, you would always be there looking at me with concern filling your chocolate brown eyes. The way your voice would be raspy whenever you were holding back tears when I told you how much the world wouldn't miss me.
"You've been there for me. You helped me through my depression, through highschool, through life, everything. I can't imagine or bear the thought of being away from you. I know that some of our fans have forced our relationship down our throats and we keep denying it, but I can't help but feel that it's not fair to them if we keep this a secret. We've been dating for what seems like a million years.
"So, maybe when we get home we can record a video and then do a stream? I want everyone to see the raw footage of how much I love you." His words hit me like a ton of bricks. Everything he just said made my heart pound and stomach fill with butterflies.
"Philly, you are not useless. You mean more to me than everything." It hurt my heart seeing him that way. He was perfect. I placed a soft kiss to his lips before pulling away looking into his icy blue eyes, sparkling. "And of course we can baby." His face lighted up with a smile and he threw his arms around my neck engulfing me in a hug that nearly knocked me out the chair.
"Oh thank you thank you thank you!" His British accented voice sounded like the most beautiful sound. "Oh, and one more thing..." He pulled away and smirked at me before getting on one of his knees.
"Philly, what are you...?" I asked, raising an eyebrow at the odd action. He can't be doing what I think he's doing, is he? Oh my god, he can't be...
He puckered his lips and whistled. Oh my god, he is! "Come here boy!" He called out in a babyish voice. I saw a blur of what looked like a small ball of fur out of the corner of my before Phil was knocked back on his butt, laughing.
"Oh my god! You got a Shiba Inu!" I exclaimed, jumping from my seat and running over to where he was laying down, the small meme licking away at his face. "What should we name him?" I asked, reaching out and petting the animal's fur. He turned his attention to me, tail wagging faster than, well, the Flash, and ran around me barking and jumping on my lap.
"Hmm...how about J-" He started but I silence him with another kiss, holding the shiba inu to my chest.
"Whatever it is, it'll be perfect."
"Just like you, Danny."

Let’s Talk.
Heres some ideas I think fic writers need to explore more (WARNING: THIS DOES MENTION SEX/SMUT):
- Fem characters being more experienced sexually than their partners.
- Soft vanilla and loving sex without the hard core kinks (DDLG, Breeding kink, exibitionism, ect.)
- Experiment with real life please? I know its our fantasy world but using real world issues adds so much to the story (I.E character having self image issues, having faults in their character, character getting pregnant and it not being all fun and happy)
- More inclusion of not small ppl (usually women)!! I am 5’6 in customary unit but I’m not plus sized nor am I skinny. But I hate reading all of those fics where the guy adores his tiny gfs because it makes me and every other size feel like poo poo :/
I feel so left out and it sucks. Maybe it’s because every fic makes me feel like a misfit for being experienced, which ruins the whole fantasy of someone taking my v card. But I never thought I would see the day where we use breeding kink as a warning; so if we can do that we can reach out our plots yeah?

It felt as if no time had passed, yet here you were, standing behind Phil as he unlocked his front door. You were trying to keep your composure but found it increasingly difficult. You had dreamed of this moment but never thought it would happen. Just a lovesick fool’s deepest desires. But still, the fact that you were truly standing behind Phil Lester, seconds from walking into his house was undeniable.
And then your world came cascading down before you. The door was open and he and (D/n) were already inside. All that was left was for you to follow. Your sneakers hit the wooden floor and you felt surreal. You would never tell Phil but this moment was one of the biggest in your life. You just walked into Dan and Phil’s apartment, something you never thought you’d get to do. But now, you were walking in as more than a fan. Even more than a friend. You were walking in as literal family.
It only took three more steps for you to be completely inside. Submerged in what you always thought was simply a fantasy. You turned breathlessly and closed the door, exhaling as you turned back. Phil gave you a small smile.
“Well… The kitchen’s right over there. If you need help finding anything just ask.” He said. You returned the smile and nodded, walking to the place he had ushered.
>> third person p.o.v. <<
Dan laid on his bed, no particularly vexing thoughts crossing his mind. Just simple, unprovoked nothings as he scrolled through Instagram. He felt slightly abashed, the date he had gone on putting him in a poor mood. She didn’t seem like a bad person, she just… wasn’t his type. He couldn’t exactly put his finger on why, she just wasn’t.
He heard the front door open, then the muffled voice of his best friend and flatmate. He must’ve been home with his sibling. Dan was still slightly ticked off that Phil made them come over and cook them dinner. Although he was silently thankful, he would never tell him that. He stood from his bed, setting his phone down and walking out of his room. His feet were slow down the hall, but he reached Phil soon enough.
“Hey, Dan. You sure look peachy.” Phil said with a laugh. Dan rolled his eyes but smiled all the same.
“Oh shut up. Is that your sibling in there?” He asked. Phil nodded.
“Why don’t you come introduce yourself, sib?” Phil called. Dan raised his eyebrows. He heard what sounded like a pan being set down in the kitchen. He watched as you emerged from the doorway, a shy smile on your face. His eyes widened and his breath seemed to leave his chest.
“Hello.” You said, your voice even more beautiful in person than through the screen. He opened his mouth to say something but found that his words would not come out.
“I… Hi…” He responded simply. You put your hands in your pockets, staring at your feet awkwardly and trying to hide the red hue of your cheeks.
“Phil… Can I… speak to you for a minute… In private?” Dan whispered through teeth grit. Phil pursed his lips, trying to hold back his laughter.
“Be right back (Y/n),” Phil said before walking with Dan to his bedroom. Dan shut the door before turning to Phil.
“What the fuck are they doing here?” Dan asked. Phil laughed.
“They’re my sibling.” He replied.
“What do you mean they’re your sibling? They can’t be!” Dan yelled. Phil shrugged.
“They can and they are. Remember how I told you about my father cheating on my mom all those years back?” Phil asked. Dan nodded.
“Well, the woman was (Y/n)’s mom,” Phil said. Dan sat on his bed, dropping his head in his hands.
“So… (Y/n)’s dad is… your dad?” Dan asked. Phil nodded. Dan fell back onto his bed.
“Oh my God… Oh my God.” He whispered.
>> second person p.o.v. <<
You squeezed your knuckles on the counter until they turned white. Your breathing was heavy and your face was hot. Holy shit, you thought. Holy fucking shit. You just met Daniel Howell. Daniel James Howell. The man you had been in love with for as long as you could remember. And now that he was live and in person, standing in front of you, you could no longer brush away the feelings as just an internet crush.
You heard the door open and fixed your posture, trying to get your breathing back to normal. You could hear Dan and Phil whispering to each other before seeing them emerge from the hallway. You gave an awkward smile before folding your arms over your chest.
“Hi… Sorry about that I just… wasn’t expecting to see you.” Dan said. You laughed.
“You think you’re surprised? I just found out I had a brother and that that brother is Phil Lester in less than a week.” You replied. Dan laughed with you.
“Yeah, can’t even imagine what this has been like for you.” He said. You shrugged.
“Been managing. I should get back to the food before it burns.” You said. Dan nodded before you walked back into the kitchen, a small smile on your face.
>> timeskip <<
Phil wiped his mouth on a napkin before leaning back in his chair.
“Jesus (Y/n), that was delicious,” Phil said. You smiled.
“Thanks. What did you think Dan?” You asked. Dan sighed.
“I couldn’t agree more. Where did you learn to cook like this?” He asked. Your cheeks turned red as you placed a strand of hair behind your ear.
“Oh, I just… Picked up a few things from my mom.” You replied with a shrug. You stood and began to gather all the dishes.
“I should head home now though. I’ve still got loads of unpacking to do.” You said while placing the dirty plates in the sink.
“Oh right. I was going to ask, how do you plan on getting home if you haven’t gone to the bank?” Phil asked. You groaned.
“Oh shit. I didn’t even think of that.” You replied. Phil laughed.
“Here, I can lend you some money to get back home.” He replied, standing up and pulling out his wallet. You held up your hands.
“Phil no, I’ve already asked you for so much. I can’t possibly-”
“Oh come on (Y/n). You’ve just made us a delicious dinner. It’s the least I can do. Plus, you don’t exactly have any other choice.” He interrupted. You sighed, knowing very well that he was right.
“Alright fine, but this is the last time.” You replied. Phil smiled before handing you a few bills that you didn’t completely recognize.
It took you a few minutes to gather your things and (D/n) but once you did, you stood at the door with Dan and Phil behind you, waiting to say goodbye. You gave Phil a hug which he graciously returned, telling you he’d see you soon. And then it came to Dan. You were unsure of how to say bye to him, so you simply ended up nodding your head at him with an awkward smile and a simple “See ya”. Maybe this wasn’t the ideal way for you to have met him, but at least you got to say that you did.

REQUEST 125 ~ Forever and always (Phil)
Phil’ POV:
Y/n. My favourite word. Every time I hear that name the image of the most beautiful, innocent and caring person appears. Their style and attitudes towards life is a contrast to mine. While they like to wear soft pastel shades, I stuck to dark more edgy tones. They were the Ying to my yang, the perfection to my imperfections. In general my love.
Anytime we were in proximity to one another my heart fluttered. Friends would often comment on how adorable we were, and that anytime we had lessons without each other, we would look glum and bored. Y/n hadn’t ever been a real fan of public displays of affections but over the course of our relationship, they had become more comfortable.
During lunches we would always be cuddled up enjoying the company of our friends. But all I could ever focus on was the look on their face as y/n conversed. I would try to hold myself back from doing it but I would always end up leaving little kisses up their neck and cheeks. My reward being the adorable blush that flooded their features.
Our times away from everyone were my personal favourite. The small dates we took, the odd night we spent together. All in their own way special. One particular time I will always treasure was the time they decided to swap styles with me. I was hesitant at first but after seeing y/n in a pair of jet black jeans and DM’s, with one of my shirts and leather jackets on, I couldn’t resist. “You look adorable phil!” Y/n squealed while looking me up and down. My body was adorning a big pastel blue jumper with a pair of white jeans. Definitely not my cup of tea for outfit choices on myself but it was worth it for y/n.
Sometimes I would find myself questioning a lot in life. ‘Would I still be with y/n after high school?’ 'Do they think the same?’ I could never find the answers until one night when my worries disappeared.
As we laid together curled up under y/n duvet. The both of us attempting to fight away sleep, I brought up my questions. “Do you think after high school we will still be together?” I mumbled into the darkness of their room.
They nodded their head against my shoulder. “Yes because no matter what happens, my heart belongs to you phil. It always will.”
I whispered an I love you to them before pulling their body closer to mine. Y/n was right. They were my ying and I, their yang. The perfection to my imperfection. My love, forever and always.

Read on ao3
It was a lazy spring night, Dan and Phil sat on their sofa drinking Rosé and endlessly scrolling through house listings. It was their way of window shopping lately. They had gotten to a point in their lives where they felt almost ready to finally go through with it . Tonight it was Dan’s idea though, it felt like an itch he couldn’t scratch, he needed a change, they needed a change - they needed to move forward. So Dan scrolled and Phil sat patiently beside him, as he always did, watching him with a small smile upon his lips.
Dan huffed when he clicked on the picture of a gorgeous house and found that it had no garden. It was promising, but it wasn’t it . Maybe they were asking for too much from London; all the newly constructed or entirely upcycled houses were quite disappointing. This was supposed to be their forever home, so they didn’t want to settle for anything less than perfect.
Phil shuffled closer and wrapped one arm around him, pressing a small kiss to his temple. Dan took a deep breath and let his head fall onto Phil’s shoulder. Phil’s presence always served as a light in the darkness, grounding him, keeping him calm.
“What about that one?” Phil pointed to an older and not so polished house.
“No, it’s -” Dan clicked on it anyway, looking at the pictures and reading the description. “It’s old.”
“Most houses in London are,” Phil pointed out.
“You know what I mean. Do we really want to take on a renovation project right now? We have too much on our plates already.” Dan’s coming out video was not ready yet and at this point, he wasn’t sure when it would be.
Phil hummed but ran his fingers on the trackpad, continuing to examine the surprising amount of pictures for that particular property. The garden was a bit run down as was part of the house. They would need to redo both bathrooms entirely, probably the electrical too to be on the safe side, but it was a two-storey house with a beautiful stone exterior. It was a good start.
“I like this one. It has a garden and the stones remind me of the houses in Rossendale,” Phil said. There was a swing in it too, but he didn’t mention it.
“I guess, but that kind of roof is a bit of a waste of space and it needs quite a bit of fixing up. It would take a lot of time and money to get it to our liking.”
“We still have a year in the lease here, we could buy it and start the renovation slowly so that we can move out when the contract is over. We could turn that roof into an owl slide.”
Dan snorted but remained silent for a moment. He couldn’t deny that the pictures were good. The house had character and, with the right work, it could become their dream house. “Do you really like it?” He asked, his voice barely above a whisper.
“Yeah, I think it’s a good price and a nice shell for us to perfect. It’s a start.” Phil clicked on a particular picture that caught his eye. “There could be a small Koi pond there,” he pointed to the right side of the garden.
  Dan smiled.
“We could put a deck here, so we can sit outside on summer nights and watch the stars and plant some roses to give the garden some life.” Phil clicked to another picture. “This could be the master bathroom, we could put a big tub in, where we could both fit comfortably.”
This time, Dan laughed. Phil was very convincing. He could picture all of his suggestions and more. A beautiful garden with many plants, maybe even some trees, beautiful glass doors leading to the yard, high ceilings on the second floor and a nice island in the kitchen. “Ok, I see it. It could work.”
“Yes!” Phil pecked him on the lips softly. “Do you really like it?” This time Phil looked at him in the eyes, trying to determine if Dan was really in love with the house as he was or if he was just humouring him.
Dan's smile widened. “I do. I think we should get it and make it our own. As long as I don’t have to do any construction work, I’m in.”
Phil laughed. “Are you crazy, bub? We would set it on fire before we even got the chance to move in.”
“Why is everything always on fire, I curse the day I chose that username.”
“The amazing house is not on fire!” Phil squealed, doing that stupid smile Dan loved so much, the one with his tongue sticking out.
With a gentle push, Phil found himself sitting on the floor but he didn’t stop laughing so he also got a cushion to the face from an extremely fond Dan.
The dream that started that night would soon turn into reality. They put an offer on the stone house and hired a contractor to get the construction going.
Even though it had been his idea, Phil often pouted about how long it was taking to make everything perfect. He had gotten obsessed with the idea of planting roses in their garden, so Dan bought him a little rose in a pot for him to tend to and help him satisfy that craving in some way. Phil looked tired of dealing with anything related to the setbacks, dark circles under his eyes spoke of the countless sleepless nights he spent worrying, but Dan’s small gesture brought a smile to his lips and a bit of light to his face. Phil sighed and kissed him softly, buried his fingers in Dan’s hair and pressed their foreheads together. Planting this particular rose in their garden became his new mission in life, if he managed to keep it alive until then that is.
  --
By March of the following year, the house is almost done. The finish line feels so close yet so far. Even though the moving date is in May, they now know better than to expect things to go smoothly, so they mentally give themselves another two months to avoid any disappointments and affecting their work schedule in advance for nothing.
One could say that they had accounted for many setbacks, even more than most people would even consider for this stage in the project, but a global pandemic was the last thing on anyone’s mind. When it finally hits the UK at full force, it takes them by surprise. Only the bathrooms, the deck, the garden and a few minor details are still unfinished so they can’t move just yet, but that becomes the last thing on their minds. So many lives are changing and some are taken and they are confined to this apartment that is much bigger than what most people have but still feels so small in this context.
They grudgingly renew their lease for another six months in hopes that it will be enough time to make things work. Nearly every single one of their projects is on hold and the sudden open calendar feels more constricting than freeing, so they both transit the lockdown in their own way.
Phil starts paying more attention to the pigeons that feed at their balcony. He takes better care of his plants and eventually starts experimenting with making new plants out of the existing ones.
Dan tries to maintain an exercise routine but gives up within the first few weeks. He writes and writes and after a few months of complaining about people learning to make sourdough bread out of some sort of existential crisis, he gives up.
Phil knew that would be the case the moment Dan got obsessed with complaining about everyone baking. It was Connor’s video that finally broke him. One morning Phil wakes up to an empty bed and follows the delicious smell to the kitchen, he recognizes Connor’s voice before he even sees what Dan is doing. He walks in and catches Dan looking at the tray through the oven door and checking the timer with a sigh.
“It’s 8.30,” Phil says tiredly but a smile is pulling at the corners of his mouth.
“I couldn’t sleep anymore so I decided to make bread,” Dan says distractedly, leaving the kitchen towel on the counter and leaning back against it.
“Doesn’t it take like 12 hours?” Phil frowned and put on the kettle.
“I started last night, mum . Leave me alone.” It’s a joke, but the tone reveals much more about Dan’s mental state than his words, he’s in a good mood but tired.
Phil chuckles and goes about making his coffee. He cocks his head when he finds a jar with white goop inside. “What’s this?”
“That’s the starter, don’t throw it out, it took me a week to make it.” Dan takes the jar from his hands gently and puts it back in the cabinet.
“You have been working on this for a while.” Phil raises his eyebrows at him. “I’m sorry, I should have noticed.” He shakes his head in disappointment.
“Noticed what?” Dan asks, looking anywhere but Phil.
“All the effort you were making. That you were stressed. I don’t know.” Phil’s shoulders drop.
“I’m fine, and you were tending to the plants - we need those.” Dan puts his hand on Phil’s shoulder and gives it a little squeeze. “That’s something to look forward to. The moment we get to plant them at the house.”
  Phil smiles. “Our house.”
  “Yeah, our house.”
They spend the rest of the day in each other’s arms, reading, chatting, eating bread, drinking wine … plotting on how to catch an injured pigeon.
Not everything goes according to plan in life but that’s ok; it’s nothing that chilled wine under the stars and lazy kisses can’t fix.
  --
After weeks of trying, they finally manage to trap their old buddy Steve and get him the care he needs. Scraggy waits patiently for him which makes them incredibly happy. Sometimes a family can be two gay lovers, a betta fish and two married pigeons sharing the same space and caring for each other.
Eventually, the light at the end of the tunnel shines brighter. Restrictions start to ease, people return to work, the renovation continues, although at a slower pace to ensure the safety of the workers. Dan and Phil don’t see a reason to go out, not yet. The world is a scary place even under normal circumstances but the last few months were a different kind of twilight zone. At least they still have each other.
Everything starts to feel a bit more real. Moving Day is so close that they can taste it. The inevitability of the passage of time finally hits them as they put their belongings into boxes. Finally getting around to packing hits differently. It’s not renovations in a house they can’t go visit and can’t see themselves, even if they get updates in videos -  finally putting their life back into boxes is what turns the imaginary into their reality.
Soon, their life becomes a different kind of twilight zone, one where the flat feels no longer like home, but where the new house isn’t either. Finding the cutlery, a hairbrush and even a bowl becomes an adventure. Dan wishes they were the kind of people who organize everything neatly but they don’t have it in them.
Dan continues baking every few days and actually gets good at it. They make it a habit to go to bed at ten just to cuddle and watch TV. It occurs to Dan that this feels like the marriage life he had always perceived as somewhat of an unattainable dream for him; he smiles for his younger self and holds onto Phil a little tighter. He feels completely at peace. It doesn’t matter that they have to wait and that everything changed so drastically, as long as he is with Phil, he knows he will be fine.
  --
The day finally arrives. It feels like any other autumn day, remarkably ordinary, yet it’s the day they finally get to move into the house they have been working so hard for.
They hire someone to clean up the construction site to keep Phil’s allergies under control and choose to handle the cleaning in the old apartment themselves. After all, it’s a good way to say goodbye to the place that holds so many memories for them.
After everything is said and done, they make sure that everything is loaded into the moving truck and leave for the new house.
They make their way to the front door and pause for a moment, smiling at each other with the keys in their hands. It’s nerve-wracking to finally be able to see how everything looks, but in the end, Dan hurries to open the door when Phil offers to carry him through the threshold. When they finally walk in, they love it. It’s still empty, but it’s home. Their forever home.
Dan shuts the door behind them with a huge smile; this is what he has always wanted, a house for them to share the rest of their lives in. He turns around and pins Phil to the door, kissing him hungrily and running his hands down Phil’s sides.
A muffled surprised yelp is all that can be heard from Phil’s side, but soon enough he smiles and loses himself in the kiss. The sound of the moving truck parking outside interrupts them, but Phil is having none of that, he grabs Dan’s hand and heads upstairs.
After a much-needed kissing break in the bathroom, they decide to start settling some things down. Phil suggests the garden first, Dan knows it’s not the most efficient task to tackle at the moment but the number of people coming and going and all the noise is getting a bit much for both of them, so he nods.
Phil is dismayed to notice that the grass was nearly entirely ruined by the construction materials that laid on it for months at a time. ‘I should have known that would happen,’ Phil shakes his head with a sigh and puts buying grass seeds on his to-do list on his phone.
They direct the moving guys, telling them where to put everything and once Norman’s tank is safely set in the lounge, they go to the garden and stay there for the most part, answering questions and thanking the employees when they are done. Before the day is over, Phil brings the rose Dan bought him almost a year ago and plants it close to the fence. Dan offers to help, but Phil shushes him away. This is his project and he is incredibly proud of himself for keeping the plant alive when they are not meant to last that long.
Dan starts unpacking some of the boxes, taking some of them to the rooms where their contents will stay to make things easier. He stands in their empty bedroom for a moment and sighs, everything worked out in the end. He feels incredibly excited to make this place really theirs.
Dan walks to the window and smiles when he sees Phil carrying more plant pots outside to settle his plant-children into the ground and decides to go down to help his man before he can hurt himself.
The rest of the afternoon is spent planting Phil’s quarantine-bred plants in an enjoyable silence, heading inside when it gets a bit too chilly.
Dinner becomes an exhausting task when they realize that they don’t know where anything is so they decide to sit in their empty kitchen and order Chinese. There’s no internet or TV service because they decided to take their first few days home unplugging from social media. The appointment for the installation is set for next week.
After they are done eating, they head to their bedroom and make the bed together, unboxing some of the things for their nightstands and settle down for the night. Phil takes a book for each out of his backpack but Dan falls asleep before he can finish the first page; Phil sets his book down, turns off the lights and cuddles up to his sleeping boyfriend.
Three days later, the deafening sound of a thunderstorm wakes Dan up in the middle of the night. He turns toward the window, blinking repeatedly to adjust his eyes and sees lightning, followed closely by roaring thunder. He shivers and shuffles back into Phil’s embrace. His mind wanders to the furniture on the deck and whether or not they put the covers on them until there’s a weird noise coming from downstairs. Dan’s heart rises to his throat but he stays quiet. He doesn’t want to wake Phil up and terrorize him with the more-than-likely inaccurate story of a possible home invasion.
Dan waits a few minutes, trying to listen for any abnormal noises but if there are any, the heavy rain is drowning them out. He allows himself to relax  and tries to go back to sleep but then the noise returns, so he slides out of bed as quietly as possible and heads downstairs.
His heart is hammering in his chest but he reminds himself they have an alarm system and he has his phone in his hand. If anything is actually happening, he can run, lock the bedroom door and call the police. He takes a deep breath and almost jumps when there’s a scratching sound coming from the other side of the door. Dan flushes to the wall, moves the curtain back a bit and looks out the window, only to see a dog taking cover on their porch. He looks like it’s a stray dog, but he looks well-fed and healthy, aside from being soaking wet. The dog starts to cry and Dan’s debate on whether or not to let him in is decided. Even if he was someone else’s dog, they can figure it out tomorrow.
He opens the door, letting the dog in, almost has a coronary when Phil speaks right behind him. “Dan?”
“Jesus! You scared me to death.” Dan puts a hand to his chest.
“Sorry, I woke up and you weren’t there. What happened? Who’s dog is that?”
“I think it’s a stray, he was scratching at the door and crying. I want to let him sleep inside and tomorrow we can check if he belongs to any of the neighbours.”
Phil scratches his head sleepily and blinks a few times. “Ok, but where do we put him?” He pats the dog’s head absentmindedly, causing him to wag his wet tail against his leg.
“The downstairs bathroom, I guess. We should dry him a bit though and put some towels down so he can sleep warm.”
“Ok. You do that while I grab some leftover chicken and water for him, he could be hungry.”
Dan hums in agreement and starts walking to the bathroom. “Come in you , we’ll get you dry.” He snaps his fingers and the dog follows him wagging his tail all the way. “Sorry about the boxes, we just moved in,” Dan comments, as if the dog would care.
Phil smiles and goes about getting some food and water for the pupper. ‘If he really is a stray… we already have a yard, it wouldn’t be so hard to take care of him, honestly.’
The mostly-dry-dog spends the night in the bathroom, licking their fingers every time they go to check on him and overall being a good boy. The toilet paper had some sort of accident on its own, surely ; it had nothing to do with the dog.
Some inquiry reveals that Adam is indeed a stray. The vet confirms that he seems to be in good health and he is not chipped so they share a look. Phil merely nods, grabbing a few bowls and toys and they leave with their dog and a big bag of food for him. Adam needs a forever home too after all.
Adam was the missing piece in the puzzle, apparently. Life has its ups and downs but their little family is happy overall. Once Adam has passed the doggy training tests, Dan sets about starting that DIY Koi Pond; luckily he has a loyal friend who likes to dig.
They settle into a nice routine, wet kisses in the morning, courtesy of Adam, and sometimes of Dan, lots of cuddles and setting time to unplug together and enjoy life.
Life has a new normal and it’s pretty sweet.
