The Ammit is a species of reptile that is found upon the arid continent, their range spanning deserts and savannas, with a preference for areas that have water sources nearby. Their main love is rivers, either dwelling in or around them. Though some may find their bodies awkward in appearance, they are actually good both on land and in water. While they do spend a chunk of time hiding in water, they aren't really swimmers. Instead, they actually walk along the bottom of the lake or river, using their legs to push them along or shoot themselves up to the surface for air or prey. On land, their strong legs allow them to move in explosive bursts, suddenly rushing prey and taking them down before they can properly react. Even when not hunting, they can trot along at a decent pace, conserving their energy for when they need to lunge at an opportunity. Their lives both in and out of the water is said to be fitting for a species of their appearance, looking to be a fusion of three different creatures.
They are said to have the pride and speed of a lion, the cunning and patience of a crocodile, and the strength and anger of a hippopotamus. While this description makes them two parts mammal and one part reptile, they are just pure reptile. Their body is covered in a variety of scales and colors, which can give the impression of fur sometimes at a distance. The mane they have is not hair, but long tendril-like scales that are more soft and floppy compared to the reptile scales most people are used to. Even the "spots" on them are nothing more than scutes. Their odd appearance have made people ask why they have such distinct sections to their body, looking like three animals stitched together. Currently, no solid answer has been given. Some believe that these different colors break up their silhouette when hiding and hunting. Others think it is meant to confuse prey, making them think they are a species they are not, and thus making them unprepared for the attack. Not the most flawless arguments, but that is what we got so far.
When it comes to diet, meat is what's on their menu. Ammit are carnivores, typically targeting large prey, like ungulates. Their hunting strategy varies when on land or water, but the basics are the same. They prefer to lie in wait and then burst forth with jaws wide open to seize prey in a crushing bite. On land, they hide within tall grass or brush, then charge in at high speed. Theses hunts last only a few seconds, as the Ammit are not meant for long distance sprinting. The point is to get prey down before they can pick up enough speed and distance to leave the hunter in the dust. They strike with tooth and claw, looking to wound the animal enough that they can't run. In some cases, Ammit have been seen simply ramming right into the fleeing prey, using their stocky bodies like battering rams. Anything to keep them from running away! When hunting in water, they take a page from the crocodile's book. They hide in the water, keeping perfectly still as prey approaches for a drink. When food gets close enough, they kick off with their muscular back legs and launch themselves forth. Jaws latch on and bite down hard, usually enough to end the hunt right there. In cases where prey rears back in time, they still aren't safe, as the Ammit may simply run out of the water to catch its meal. When prey is downed, they use their jaws and claws to tear chunks of flesh off to swallow whole. Their potent stomach acid lets them eat pretty much everything off of prey, thus little is left after they finish dining.
While they are powerful carnivores, they do appear to be quite social from time to time. An individual Ammit may spend a good chunk of time alone, focused on hunting for prey, but eventually they will meet up with more of their kind. Typically these hangouts will be around or in water, sticking close as a group. They will vocalize, groom and occasionally do some sparring, using this time to relax and develop relationships. It seems that it is during these meet ups where males and females will begin eyeing one another, getting an idea of who they want to hook up with when mating season comes. When the seasons get rough and food gets scarce, these gatherings may result in team ups where the Ammit will work together to bring down hardier prey. They will use a variety of tactics to go after species they don't normally hunt, all in the hopes of scoring a meal in these trying times. Teamwork also occurs when pairs raise their young, as both the father and mother work to keep their offspring fed and safe. For a species with wicked speed and jaws, they can be surprisingly friendly and sociable. For some folk though, I am stating quite the obvious fact!
What I described certainly sounds like a dangerous beast, and I imagine there be quite a few people scared of a sprinting pair of reptilian jaws! However, if you were to talk to the locals, they would have a completely different view! For the people here, the Ammit is a beloved and sacred species, to the point where they have domesticated a breed of them. These Ammit can be pets, guards and hunting aids, working alongside the humans. Within the vast empire of this region, the Ammit is seen as a both a guardian and a judge, as they are believed to be able to sniff out wicked hearts. Those with foul intentions or tainted souls are said to enrage the Ammit who protect sacred temples and holy sites. Some Ammit are used to judge offenders, with criminals standing before one of these beasts and seeing if it chooses to kill them or spare them. What decides their fate is known only to this reptilian judge, with some claiming that it is body language and the stench of fear that can determine if it attacks, while others say it is pure luck. I wouldn't know, as I don't exactly plan on being put before that kind of court! Under the care of loving owners, Ammit can live much longer then their wild counterparts, and thus reach incredibly sizes. Ancient Ammit can live up to a century, and typically these larger specimens are the ones who are used in these judging ceremonies or are given offerings. In their religion, one of these beasts is used to judge the souls of the dead, devouring the hearts of those who are rife with sin.
It is an incredible thing to see, I must say, witnessing these great beasts working alongside the humans here. Those that have been domesticated are quite friendly, and can definitely show you some affection! I loved meeting them and getting a chance to see this relationship up close! However, I came off quite crazy to people back home when I talked about how incredible it would be to have one as a pet! I guess outsiders don't get it! Though, I must put in a warning, as these domesticated breeds of Ammit can give the wrong impression at times. Their friendly ways and ease around people is wonderful, but it can make one start attributing these characteristics to wild Ammit. People get it into their heads that all these reptiles are happy little buddies, and then get too close to one in the wild and get chomped. Don't make this mistake. No matter how cute or wonderful some creatures look in the wild, do remember that you are in the wild.

Yeah she's still around, I am sure my slew of FOI stuff made some folk worry. Chlora entries do exist, and in the future I will probably do some back and forth more frequently between her stuff and FOI. Here is a personal favorite mythical monster!

Hepet-Hor (far right) on the coffin of Iufenamun. She stands protectively before the double staircase which represents the primeval mount; Osiris sits atop it with a retinue of gods. Ammut sits on the left side of the staircase. At the National Museum of Scotland.
(I can't believe how many images of Hepet-Hor I've found. I've got a spreadsheet with over forty coffins and papyri. Some people just collect stamps...)

How do you feel about the idea of decay existing as another form of life instead of being direct opposite of it?
Oh, I definitely suscribe to this line of thinking! Our bodies begin to die at the age of 25, so we are literally decaying as we live. And I am a death witch and a follower of Anubis, so I follow the ancient Egytian's beliefs that death is simply the next stage of life. Unless your heart is heavier than the feather and Ammut eats it. Then you're done.

Because I'm so totally normal, I - of course - have an Allagan traitor and a Meracydian general as ocs.
And of course, they're Surkukteni's and Ysayle's immediate past lives.
Ammut is the brother to Amon. He's a trans man who greatly opposed the empire but tried to keep his criticism mild so he could continue to work with insurgents like Urth (Iolaine) without drawing too much attention to himself. He ends up getting in touch with the Meracydian resistance and works with them after....years of bickering to get them to trust him, and he winds up in a pact with Bahamut (aka: romantic interest), and starts dating Macchi. His pact lets him conjure weapons associated with Bahamut!
Macchi is a Meracydian Mithra, so he really should be a 6'3" tiger man, burly af etc etc. He's in a pact (again, deeply romantic stuff) with Tiamat, who so deeply trusts him that she let him partake of her own energy. So, dragon-catboy. His life is what Ysayle mistakes for Shiva and Hraesvelgr's, so she was right, but just a tiny bit off mark. He's resistant to the idea of ever working with Ammut - as a general pushing back against Allagan colonization - but he does end up working with Ammut and gets with him.
...the two end up caught by Amon and executed horrifically. They have powerful Voidsent summoned into their living bodies (considered inhumane by even Allag) to execute them publicly and use the bound Voidsent to kill Bahamut and topple Meracydia: in Macchi was Macha, the Voidsent of the Morrignae and would be the namesake of Mhach; in Ammut, was Diarmuid Ua Duibhne, who would be resummoned by Ammut's reincarnation 3,000 years later.
Their rage was so strong that Hydaelyn - taking the souls of her dead lovers, Charon and Khione - kept them by her to spare them further pain, not realizing she released them to reincarnate as Surkukteni and Ysayle (and Katsuro, but that's complicated).

Moon Knight Primer Part Ten
Tumblr media
Moon Knight (2016) #2- 3
Prologue, Part I, Part II, Part III, Part IV, Part V, Part VI, Part VII, Part VIII, Part IX
As I said, we’re doing this almost issue by issue. We’re still in the mindscape and we’re not going to leave it for a while.
But I take a chance here to make some extra comments. See, this  issue is interesting because it introduces Ammut, Goddess of Judgment, as the villain. Which, well, duh! We all know Ammut from the series! And the series took inspiration from here, so of course she’d be the bad guy.
Except… Before this? Moon Knight had NEVER fought against ANY Egyptian god. One of the things that mark everything in this mindscape as strange is that there’s a huge emphasis on the Egyptian gods, specifically on Seth and Ammut, as the enemies of Khonshu, so anyone coming in here as their first approach to Moon Knight could believe that yeah, Moon Knight constantly fought the gods of the Egyptian pantheon. But the truth is, if you check the previous parts of the primer, that he has never done it. He fought the incarnation of a previous Khonshu priest that had been heretical -and shown to be the reincarnation of a Khonshu priest himself, even if that plot device was forgotten almost immediately-, a man CLAIMING to be the avatar of Anubis, and the cult of Khonshu three times, but in none of those apparitions did Marc fought an actual Egyptian god.
The closest he came to do so was in West Coast Avengers, when Seth armies came down to capture Khonshu. But even then? Marc himself only fought the minions, and not the god directly.
So it’s very interesting that in his personal mindspace? Marc only fights Egyptian gods (Later we’ll see Steven and Jake’s personal corners, but for now, we’re with Marc.
Sort of.
See, we open issue 2 seeing Marc’s scribbles. Or well, what Dr. Emmet says are Marc’s scribbles and fantasies about Moon Knight. She’s in a session with him again, only that this time, due to his escape attempt? Billy and Bobby are also there, ready to pounce if necessary. Only that Marc tells her that he is not Marc Spector. At her scoff, asking if she’s now dealing with Jake or Steven (even as she still calls him Marc) he replies that the is THE Moon Knight, the Fist of Khonshu, that he knows the hospital he is in is fake as Mental Health institutions are not like that anymore (Which is a bit of a relief, I mean, that it’s mentioned, given how badly mental health institutions are usually portrayed in comics) and that her face is not her real face.
To that, she replies that HE came to the asylum from an Orphanage -another big clue to us, the readers, that the doctor is lying since Rabbi Spector is one of those things that have never changed from one origin to the next- and sends him, once again, to electroshocks since he is back to where they started when he arrived. At this, he calls her Ammut, god of Judgment. She is definitely not amused, and replies she’s Irish, Emmet, not Egyptian.
As they go out, on their way to the electroshocks they bump into a janitor, who apologizes in French. We and Marc take a doubletake as that is, of course Jean Paul “Frenchie” Dunchamp.
Tumblr media
And once again I have to make a pause: So far, all of Marc’s allies here? Have been patients in the asylum. But Jean Paul? He is WORKING for the asylum. Now, remember, we’re in the mindspace, so this is how Marc sees Jean Paul. Why would his oldest friend be in a place where he is working with the villains keeping Marc down? Simple: Jean Paul was the only friend Marc had left from his mercenary days. A constant reminder of Marc’s OWN days as a villain. But also, and before anyone gasps in indignation?  Also a trusted ally who can go undercover in the darkest edges of the crime underworld and come out untouched by that evil (Let’s not forget that Jean Paul was the one who went undercover in the Council that “hired” Moon Knight to kill Werewolf by Night). Later in the issue, Jean Paul will be Crawley’s ace in the hole for an escape attempt, and will bring Marc his Mr. Knight suit, proving once again that yes, Marc trusts Jean Paul completely.
The Electroshocks send Marc back into Khonshu’s chamber, and now we see something a bit different. THIS time, Khonshu’s reality HAS panels. Sketchy and unsure, but Panel borders that ony disappear if a white element of the scene, such as Marc or Khonshu’s suit touch them. So, we’re, as Eminem would say, Back to Reality.  Or, at least, a place where Marc’s mind doesn’t control everything right then and there. I have theories about what this space really is, but we will wait for it for later.
There, Khonshu admits he’s restless and losing his patience, but, in a strange and almost protective moment, also says that it’s his fault because he never completely trusted Marc. He explains that, at the time, Khonshu and Marc’s consciousness are traveling on a vessel that is crossing the Othervoid, Khonshu’s native dimension.
This is, of course, part of the idea that Khonshu and Marc’s brains are connected that Ellis introduced, and the whole thing where Egyptian gods are not gods like the Aasgardians or the Greeks, but mere extraterrestial creatures that are not allowed on earth anymore, so they have to use Avatars in order to walk the planet.  Again, the idea that gods in general are extradimensional is not bad on itself, but that every other pantheon gets the opportunity to be extradimensional AND Gods, but the Egyptians are merely aliens? Very iffy. It will get a LOT worse later on once we finish the Lemire run and have to go into the second time Marc was in the Avenger’s book, but right now? It’s just very annoying.
Marc is, of course, Khonshu’s chosen avatar, because his mind called to Khonshu because Marc has a weak mind, a very weak mind that helps Khonshu make a connection, but also allows their enemies to “fill” it with delusions. When Marc, who has been silently crying now, ask how does he know all of this is real? Khonshu replies that he doesn’t know, but that he has to have faith.  And as he does? The Shaggy panels disappear. We’re back in Marc’s mindspace.
Tumblr media
And to the asylum where, thankfully, Crawley is there to tell Marc that yeah, he also sees the orderlies as Jackals, to Marc is not alone in his beliefs.
Well, he is, because we know that Crawley is not real, but the vision of Crawley created by Marc, but he is still the part of his mind that reminds Marc to watch things closer, that he is not alone. And to give him the way out, as there’s a new plan and instead of going UP, they need to go Down. And they need to do it that night as it’s a full moon.
As I mentioned before, the plan is Jean Paul putting everyone to sleep with enough tranquilizer to put elephants to sleep. Crawley and Jean Paul want to leave as soon as possible, but Marc refuses. He has seen Gena and Marlene there and he refuses to go without them, so he tells them to go and get them -despite the risk of being seen- and come back to the cell as he needs to change because Jean Paul, great friend he is, brought him his Mr. Knight suit.
Tumblr media
By the way, it’s quite telling how Marc’s attitude changes completely once he’s in the suit an mask. His posture becomes more confident, he starts speaking with a more formal tint. He asks Jean Paul not to call him Marc, as he is “Only Mr. Knight” but that is not to mean that Mr. Knight is a new alter, it’s just Marc keeping his confidence up -and we know that because he doesn’t mind it when Jean Paul just… keeps calling him Marc. (In the real world, in almost every run, he never answered to people mis-naming them except for the still catatonic Marlene)
As they move down the stairs of the Asylum, the walls change and completely turn into a pyramid, filled with hieroglyphics, but it’s quite clear that the only ones who see this are Crawley and Marc, as Gena zigzags between seeing the same as everyone, and seeing the hospital, and the subway station that they end up in after opening a secret door. Crawley and Marc also see the subway, but it’s covered in sand, as if the Egyptian desert had just eaten New York. Oh, and the subway cars are filled with living mummies that get ready to attack them as we go on to issue three.
While Crawley protects Marlene, Gena and Jean Paul help Marc fight the mummies. However, that is when the orderlies, led by Dr. Emmet, catch up with them. Only that now it’s not just  Billy and Bobby who have jackal faces. Dr. Emmet has a nice crocodile head because of course she is Ammut, the Soul Eater.
Tumblr media
As they fight, Khonshu appears to Marc and points to the only possible escape route and here again we have a lovely hint and play with the art. Remember I mentioned how everything was inked sharper in Marc’s head? Well, Khonshu is colored and inked in the sketchy way of the Othervoid, with ink splotches looking like stars around him.
This, of course, means that Khonshu is an outsider to this particular corner of the System’s mind. He is there, guiding Marc, but he is NOT part of Marc’s inner world.
Once he sees the others follow the route planned by Khonshu, Marc stays to fight Ammut and the Jackal orderlies, and a lucky jab with a syringe makes everything go back to “normal”, but Marc doesn’t stop to question his reality anymore. Even as he sees Ammut as human, he punches her, jabs her with another syringe and runs.
Importantly, this time he calls Ammut “Eater of Souls”. Which well, is how Marc sees psychiatrists: Every single one he has seen has tried to take away part of his soul, his alters, and sometimes, they have managed it if only for a short time.
In the tunnel, he finds himself alone and in the dark, without any guide. So he takes his mask off and once again repeats that he can’t do what he needs to do “By himself”
Which is a big theme in the Lemire run: The System, by the mere nature of being a system, means that none of them are ever alone. But right now, stuck in his own mind, his own corner of his mindscape, Marc FEELS alone when he is not surrounded by his allies.
Khonshu, outside sketchy Khonshu reappears and tells him that is Madness? Is his gift. That it’s what keeps him alive, and he just needs to give into it. To let his insanity guide him and accept himself.
Tumblr media
This very, very helpful Khonshu is a far cry from the exact same Khonshu just pages before that was berating Marc for his weakness… but I do have a theory about what that is. It will pan out in issue 5, I promise.
With Marc accepting it, the darkness leaves to show two paths. One marked by the Eye of Horus, the other by a Snake. Obviously, Marc takes the Horus path, as the Eye of Horus means protection.
I love it when people remember that Marc can read hieroglyphs perfectly, since the Marc Spector: Moon Knight days.
He reunites with his friends, who are at the end of the tunnel… that opens into a gorgeous star filled galaxy. Marlene starts waking up -a very important hint that we’re at the edge of Marc’s “Space” in the headspace, and mumbles that “There will be a price”.
Which is when Anubis arrives, in a small raft, made of bones, offering passage to the travelers in the night. Gena sees him as a driver, who is asking for his fare, but both Crawley and Marc see him as the god, who says that the cost for passage will be one of their souls, and it can’t be Marc’s as that one belongs to Khonshu.
Tumblr media
Since the jackal orderlies are catching up to them again, and before Marc can stop him, Crawley volunteers and everyone jumps on the raft, to be taken to a different floating temple. While everyone leaves again, Crawley remains but Marc promises he will find a way to free Crawley from his promise and recover his soul.
Tumblr media
But for now, he’s down one ally, his guide and mentor in the dark pathways of his own mind.
They manage to get back to the surface of New York, a couple of locks away from the pyramid we saw in issue one, and once again, It is time to leave you guys with the promise that things will get rocky in the next part.
