So I Finally Finished Attack of the Clones

...for the very first time. When did this movie come out again? I am late, is there still room on this bandwagon? Anyway more thought vomiting on this movie...

Sith Pattern: I do appreciate that Palpatine is old, rich, white male fascist. Dooku is old, rich, white male fascist. Anakin shakes things up a bit by starting out young and poor but he’ll get there and has the rest down. Meanwhile our heroes are Padme Amidala, Mace Windu, Yoda, Bail, etc. Would have loved for George Lucas’ original casting of Obi Wan to have gone through! This does make Mirror!verses and morality flip AU's very weird because the Galaxy is being saved from aliens by three white guys? Unfortunate implications aside I can suspend a lot of disbelief about laser-swords and magic IN SPACE but I gotta draw the line somewhere.

Anakin’s attachment: Is well-shown here with convenient comparison to Cleigg – her husband and her son, the two who should love Shmi the most. At her funeral Cleigg is all ‘you’re in a better place. Thank you for the time we had,’ vs Anakin’s ‘I wasn’t strong enough to save you, I won’t fail again’ and ‘I miss you’. Exact opposites. Cleigg was entirely focused on Shmi while Anakin was focused on himself.

Also Anakin’s focus kinda screwed up Obi Wan’s mission when he wasted precious moments FINDING Anakin to get his galactically-important message through.

Mace Windu Not Killing Dooku: Shatterpoint, along with some fanfics, has Mace beating himself up for not ending the war by killing Dooku but my man you’re too hard on yourself! You only killed Jango when he decided to fuck around and find out with you in the death arena. Dooku did not fuck around and find out so your only chance would’ve been to throw away all your Jedi morals and stab him in the back! Thus risking becoming Darth Tyrannus 2.0 and screwing the galaxy.

Jango why did you fuck around and find out? I get Mace held a laser sword to your throat and you had a working jetpack going into the arena…but that arena is No Man’s Land. Even if Galidraan was canon you could’ve stayed back and taken pot shots.

The scene with Boba giving one last keldabe kiss to his father’s helmet is heartbreaking! Ouch!!!

Padme: So I kinda get being willing to confess her terrible taste in men on Space Fantasy Death Row. She doesn’t want to live a lie and is straight up expecting to die so what does it matter if she confesses? And then she does live so consequence time! Still feels like she’s ignoring the genocide – or George Lucas is ignoring the obvious implications. Genocide does work for foreshadowing Jedi genocide and Nazi comparisons (boy howdy does it!!!). But murdering every single member of an entire tribe down to the babes in arms doesn’t work for ‘Anakin doesn’t Fall here, he just dips his toe in the Dark’.

Padme otherwise doesn’t seem too terribly out of character throughout. She stands her ground against Anakin and where she does give in – rescuing Shmi – or chooses to go after Obi Wan? Well both did do her immensely big favors it’d be weirder if she brushed them off. Plus, rescuing both comes with additional benefits – no assassin will look for her on Tattooine (it worked before) and Obi Wan’s rescue could offer the opportunity to discuss peace with the Separatists before war happened.

And it did – in the cut scene :P

Dual with Dooku: So Anakin did put his duty first when Padme fell in the (barren, sans enemies) sand with an ally but damn if his attachment to her wasn’t still affecting him. The hot-headed idiotic attack was the worst possible timing! Why does everyone beat Mace up (including the man himself) for not killing Dooku but give Anakin a pass when he had every chance of ending the war Right There if he’d been able to keep his head on straight for two minutes.

The End: As with the first movie, we end with Mace and Yoda clearly knowing what the Sith are doing, though they're split with Mace believing Dooku while Yoda thinks its a trick. And I think they’re both right because I read somewhere Dooku and Palpatine were hoping to sow doubt between the Jedi and the Senate but also was telling the truth – from a certain point of view. Anyway, they aren't oblivious. Yoda straight up says the Shroud of the Dark Side has Fallen.

The last scene really drives that home! How the beginning of the war is the beginning of the Empire. The war kills the Republic and this is repeatedly smacked into our brains with the imagery of Palpatine standing at the head of everyone else, the most powerful Supreme Chancellor ever as the army of white-clad troopers marches out into the galaxy below him. The Destroyers lift off. The Empire’s freaking theme music plays.

Overall the movie had its high points and stinkers but that was a damn fine end!

After reading metas, how can you marry someone after they massacre people? And this isn't about having compassion or believing their capable of goodness, I think that's great, but to marry them and technically, cover it up? Maybe I'm talking to the wrong person about this, since you ship anidala, but still it just confuses me so much.

Hello! :) (Sorry, I don't know if you're the same anon, lol)

I would describe myself as someone who greatly appreciates the love story of Lucas second trilogy, as a tale of a doomed relationship of star-crossed lovers, so maybe "ships anidala" is accurate. But to be honest, I differentiate between loving the narrative that George Lucas was telling, and being emotionally invested in their fictional relationship per se. So maybe it's not that accurate.

Regarding your question, I believe this is a very sensitive topic. I think there are two things to consider:

Scale-of-justice view vs. Continuum view

I think it ultimately has to do with one's view on humans. In George Lucas' Star Wars, whether we're good or bad is nothing more and nothing less than whether we're able to control our fear, anger, hate and aggression or we're being controlled by it. If you have this view, you can't really take out one thing from a person's life and say, this and that is what should define them as good person or bad person. When your dark side is in control, you're under the sway of your fear, anger, hate and aggression, greed, so you act in an evil way, you do evil things, under the influence of negative emotions and motivations and so on. That evil behavior arises as a result of certain causes and conditions. A Jedi Knight is someone who controls their dark side through patience and training and going as far to their light side - compassion, love, kindness, charity and hope - as possible, they're dedicating their whole life to achieve this and to radiate onto others. But this is a very hard task and you have to be very diligent about it, you have to work hard and you have to be very disciplined, because your dark side is always there and if you let your guard down, it will erupt. You must be mindful, compassionate, committed and serious.

Being on the light side and in control of the dark side - that's Anakin Skywalker. Being under the sway of the dark side and being on the dark side - that's Darth Vader. What I am trying to say here is that you should try to view him and all others as a continuum and judge them by their current state and not like weighing their actions on a scale and trying to get a verdict based on that. That's one of the core lessons of Lucas' Star Wars. For example, Anakin saved Naboo in Episode I, and in Episode IV, he destroyed Alderaan. I doubt that anyone who watch this, says, well, one planet saved, one planet destroyed, therefore, he is back to square one, whereas scale-of-justice logic requires exactly that conclusion. The scale-of-justice logic cannot make sense of the redemption of Darth Vader, thus, there are many who left bewildered by the fact that he ended up being a manifestation of the Force like Yoda and Obi-Wan, whereas it's actually the conclusion of the view that sees him as a continuum. In Episode III, he was no longer the good man named Anakin and in Episode VI, he was that person once again, and no longer Vader. In the same way, in Episode II, Anakin fell under the sway of his dark side, and he massacred the Tuskens. You can say that he become Darth Vader for that time. Then, he was once again Anakin, and he was tormented by guilt and shame, saying, "I'm a Jedi! I know I am better than this." According to scale-of-justice logic, butchering the Sand People goes into Anakin's permanent record and he must do something very good to balance it, so he can be considered a good person once again, but this is, once again, the flaw of that logic.

Padmé views Anakin this way. She is not marrying the Anakin who is under the sway of his dark side, but the Anakin who is in control of it and who is on his light side. In Episode III, she begs him to turn back into that person. As it's explicitly stated in Episode VI, Anakin is this person's "true self", obscured by his unchecked dark side. He carries Vader as a potential in himself, and Vader carries him as a potential as well. This is why he can to turn into Vader, and back into Anakin.

Sand People: demonized natives or beasts?

As for Sand People, sometimes I wonder how they were meant to be viewed in George Lucas' canon. It's very clear that Anakin butchering the younglings in Episode III and wiping out the entire Tusken village in Episode II are meant to be seen as two very, very different things: Padmé immediately tells Anakin that she cannot stay with him, and she can't do that "Because of what you've done. What you plan to do." Lucas himself said that Padmé would certainly won't be able to live with him after this, although she would still love him. And even though she is well aware of the fact that Anakin massacred Tusken women and children, when Obi-Wan reveals that Anakin killed the younglings in the Jedi Temple, she reacts with saying, "Not Anakin. He couldn't." I saw many who found this ridiculous but it's quite clear that Lucas wants us to separate the two incidents, even though he says that Anakin killing the Tuskens is "completely inappropriate."

We can argue about whether or not it is a good thing, but if we watch the movies and the tv show, we have no real reason to believe that when they were described as creatures who are walking like men but they're actually mindless and vicious and animal-like monsters, it wasn't accurate. In fact, Lucas explicitly stated that he wanted the Tuskens to be introduced as such: deadly, treacherous, disliked, not completely human, as he said. This is not to say that they are not composed of light and dark, like all living things, but they're meant to be seen as a race of bloodthirsty and animal-like, primitive marauder creatures. They're the baboons in Disney's Tarzan.

So, in George Lucas' narrative, what Anakin did was certainly bad, but the emphasis is always on Anakin took lives out of hate, anger and aggression branching from his rage over not being able to have his mother in his life, descending into blind vengeance. A Jedi Knight must not take revenge, no matter what, and must be able to be in control of his dark side. That's the point.

The portrayal of the Tusken Raider as more human, even noble, with complex spirituality and traditions is (and again, we can argue about whether or not it's a good thing, but that's another conversation) coming from Book of Boba Fett and the Mandalorian, and it can be traced back to some Legends works. Viewing Attack of the Clones with this in mind, Anakin massacring the Sand People village is basically the genocide of a tribe of natives and Padmé's reaction to it is deeply concerning and it seems she either ignores it or simply just doesn't care. But in Lucas' narrative, the Tusken raiders, like I wrote it above, are closer to stereotypical baboons. Their death is not acknowledged as something that has the same wight as the death of the younglings. Or the Ewoks, who were prepared to cook Luke and Han. Even more importantly, if you watch the Clone Wars episode Trespass, on the surface, the Talz are very similar to the Tuskens, yet, they're worlds apart, and the story makes sure that their equality is clearly emphasized. If the Tuskens would meant to be seen similarly, there would've been an episode introducing them in a similar way.

The Tuskens are nightmarish nomadic maunderer creatures roaming a desert planet, intelligent and able to create culture, but driven by basic instincts, inspired by horror stories about desert dwelling, nightmarish nomadic maunderer tribes that were based on stereotypical depiction of the Bedouin, who historically raided trade caravans, villages at the margins of settled areas and threatened cities. So, Padmé's reaction to Anakin's confession and she marrying him anyway should be interpreted with this in mind.

Like I said, we can argue about whether or not it's a good thing, but that's another discussion - to be able to have that discussion, I think, it's crucial to clarify, what is the story that was told, how the characters, the creatures, the philosophies etc. were meant to be viewed, because then we can have a clear picture.

Also, I see a lot people on her say Anakin eats bugs and where did that come from? Is that thing?

Yes!! I have a headcanon that Obi-wan and Anakin are HUGE foodies! That they love, love, love flaunting their "superior taste" for Coruscant's best eats. Anakin LOVES trying out the uncommon, unusual, and high-quality cuisine all over the city because of his lack of exposure to options on Tatooine - and it's something they bond over.

They're always going out to dinner places together (and it feels oddly, normal, secretly unJedi-like, and maybe that's why they like it so much, deep down, even if they're supposed to be talking war games or strategy, the scenery, the charade of being part of the People and not ever-in front of them with a laser sword brandished, feels so... quietly balming; like they're regular people with a regular life for an hour or two). Or they're making reservations and surprising the other when they see something the other would like or a new place opens up.

Obi-wan, however, loathes the sketchy (plainly unhygienic) food-safety violating street food carts in the lower levels which Anakin and Ahsoka are obsessed with, and always trying to get him to try out, or bringing back to the Temple piping hot in protective bags, as they duck in from the storming city rain.

I also hc that Obi wan is a great cook, Anakin is okay and can scrabble together something brilliant when pressed, and Ahsoka is a disaster in the kitchen. Obi-wan is always scribbling down recipes and ingredients from their various travels across the galaxy, which Anakin always fondly discovers in the corner of datapads or hastily recorded in R2's memory banks. He surprises Obi-wan by consolidating them one day so he has a reference file.

Anakin always constantly teases Obi-wan about being spoiled by his access to nearly everything in Coruscant when he lived off sand cakes, Hutt slime pods, and water rations on Tatooine until 9. And despite the disgusting nature of Hutt cuisine ("If it can be called that," Obi-wan remarks) Anakin still sometimes misses the repulsive dishes from Hutt space and sparse Tatooine - having grown up with them, having eaten them with his mother. Obi-wan does his best to occasionally, and admittedly with some duress, remake or mimic dishes from Mos Eisley or Hutt "cuisine" (which he always says with disdain, despite) and it lights Anakin up every time.

Worth it.

Even if he can barely look at his own recreation without mental preparation.

We’re gonna ignore all the Nazi shit because we have established long fucking ago that Ben isn’t a fucking Nazi here. It’s Hux if there was one. I know this because of this scene:

Ben didn't even blow up the fucking temple. He crawls out of the rubble of his own hut after the whole Luke and his horribly timed moment of self reflection thing and it is only after he attempt to wake up the other students THEN the temple blows up. The boy didn't have jack shit to do with it. I'm telling you this because I know you wont read this comic and it sounds like you could use some fucking cliff notes.

It's very rich being told by someone who seems to deeply sympathize with Anakin, a character we do actually witness kill women and children, no even in wartime.

and then children in his own cult because a old fuck told him if he did that he could help Anakin cheat death.

And maybe his wife? A little bit? I mean he did have a hand in it.

But thinks Ben is just nonredeemable evil because he killed some enemies of war during wartime. I don’t think even outside of the movie material like in the comic and novelizations do we see Ben kill anyone who wasn’t apart of the war and enemies to the faction he was a part of.

I’ve never thought to sit down and do an actual fucking body count on these 2 characters but we fucking can if you want. Off the top of my head I’m pretty fucking sure Anakin has a way fucking higher ‘noncombat of war’ kill count vs Ben with just the sand people alone. That was an entire town he kill. Not even mentioning the jedi younglings he fucking slaughtered. At lest this town in The Force Awakens didn’t have any fucking kids in it because it's a Resistance town.

I’m sympathetic to the character of Ben Solo because that’s kinda the point of these fucking movies. Even The Rise of Skywalker, fucking incoherent shit show that it was, couldn’t ignore the fact that the character of Ben Solo was always meant to be redeemed. As if it wasn’t telegraphed loudly enough by making him the emotionally damaged son of two characters who want their son back since they fucking say it enough, Leia Organa and Han Solo.

Not even halfway through the movie we have a whole interaction with this character that is him questioning his own faith.

Fuck, he stabs Han and Immediately has some pretty fucking intense feelings of regret.

so intense his own mother reacts to his grief.

This isn't Leia getting punched in the empathy so fucking hard she has to sit down from Han dying. Han died with peace, knowing his death would be the thing that finally brings their son home. This is Leia reacting to the pain that Ben is feeling in this moment.

Adam Driver and Carrie Fisher didn’t put their entire fucking badoosy into these genuine expressions of grief for you to sit there and misunderstand the basic structure of these character’s motivations.

And while I hate fucking saying this because I would absolutely love to spend hours explaining to you in graphic fucking detail how much further Ben's character progresses to the Light Side is throughout this movie, we’re just gonna fucking ignore The Last Jedi for this chat because I still have your mom and dad to fuck and plants to water. One: This man is so fucked up. I think the galaxy at large would have been a much better place if he spent his early 20s getting fucked up at the club instead of committing atrocities against sand people and being tempted by the dark side of the force.

Two: He was TWENTY THREE when he became Darth Vader.

Propaganda for Miorine Rembran:

By the time we even meet her, she's in an arranged marriage, but specifically in the sense that anybody with a certain title obtained by defeating other people with said title can marry her once she turns 17, and the current person with that title was an absolute asshole (though that was quickly switched out for Suletta, who thankfully is not that). Her father sucks, does not allow her to have any agency in her life or feel like much more than an object and is the one who arranged that situation while her mother is very very dead. She ended up becoming the head of a company at 16. The exact day she turned 17, she ended up letting that old groom, now less of a horrible person but still not who she wanted in that role at all, become her groom again in a rigged duel just to protect the person who was her groom before and let her live as her own person at the expense of her own happiness. She tried to make some negotiations with people on Earth and her ex-groom's mother ended up causing a massacre which Miorine immediately felt at fault for and was understandably very messed up by. Her ex-groom ended up becoming her groom again and the two got to reunite but very soon after plot happened and said groom was put in a situation where she very nearly dead/where Miorine thought she was dead for a good moment before realizing she was alive. Miorine got to have her ending with Suletta where she got to be happy with her but she should have been at the club instead. In a figure of speech way because she's technically only old enough for that post-timeskip but still. She does spend time post-timeskip managing relations with Earth and dissolves a whole company within that time so it doesn't even need to be a figure of speech. She should just be at the club

The closest to "playfully mean" I ever do is in character thoughts like this. they are mean to each other. the readers and I are just watching from a corner with a bucket of popcorn.

ok so you did see the post I assume. But basically: I was listening to some music. and this song made me think about obimaul running away from order 66 together. and the words to this one are coming more easily than any of the other wips I've started, so I of course started to write it <3

Maul's plan in the cartoon is WAY too complicated (which I admit is rather in character for him) and WAY too dependent on luck (which he obviously doesn't have enough), so like. imagine. what if instead he decides to stalk Obi-Wan, to tell him in person about his vision. he tells him about Sidious, about how the war will end, how Anakin will fall, but Obi-Wan obviously doesn't believe him (or doesn't admit he believes him). so Maul keeps following him, from the sieges on the Outer Rim to Coruscant to Utapau, and saves him when Order 66 happens. so now they're on the run together. aaaand that's all I have planned so far. maybe it'll end there.

maybe it'll continue.

I like the idea of Maul being there too on Mustafar, I think he could save Padmé. Fake her death Romeo and Juliet style. I don't want him to fight Anakin though, if he did one of them would definitely die (he would NOT let Obi-Wan make the same mistake twice. he would "mercy" kill Anakin).

I also mentioned this in the original tags of the post but I would LOVE for Padmé to raise Luke on Tatooine, both of them hiding from Vader and the Empire. Yes she would be a great rebel leader she'd be like Leia before Leia, but who knows what would happen if Vader found out she's alive and a rebel. He would probably strangle Palpatine for lying to him. and start his own rebellion if Palpatine survives. three way civil war (empire vs rebels vs vader). too complicated for me. so I'm putting Padmé in the sand. she can leave to join the rebellion with Luke when he's old enough.

there’s so mamy variants of this crossover in my head and i can barely get any of them DOWN i am. displeased :|

for example i have this variant where jango fett comes across sanya, who is very much Baby (baby-sized, duckling instincts activate as soon as you pass the vibe test, so on and so forth) sometime between tpm and aotc, and boba and all the clones get a sister, and sanya trots after boba through the kamino facilities all the time and all her millions of brothers love her and she gets jango to realize the discrepancy in his treatment of boba vs. all the other clones and something something fix-it through the power of Weaponized Adorable

and then i have like. a thing where all seven of the collective is whacked into the gffa as animals, only they’re creatures from a galaxy not so far far away and so a bunch of the people they come across are like “??? hey uh what the kriff” with various subsequent reactions from “holy kark you’re adorable” (sanya, sweeney, artemy) to “uhhhhh . . . okay then?” (pierce, heidi, kisca) to “WHAT THE SITHSPIT ARE YOU” (gecko)

and also i have one where obi-wan gets snitcheded by the sith as a padawan and the collective find him trying to get out and go “this is our person now”/a specific member finds him and goes “holy crap you pitiful creature. mine now” and fuckin books it away with him

and THEN i have the main one where the whole collective is scattered across not only the timeline but DIFFERENT VERSIONS of the timeline, and sweeney adopts/gets adopted by the skywalkers before the events of tpm, kisca not-thems palpatine and ends the clone wars early because it’s not a sith and as a consequence it doesn’t care about the sith plottings and ALSO it just fuckin’ stopped one apocalypse man c’mon, pierce haunts baby-wan during melida/daan and carries a grudge against qui-gon for leaving him there for YEARS, artemy hops after the zabrak brothers as a crow and pesters maul into being less Like That through liberal application of beholding (although to be clear. maul is still an enormous bitch. i think he deserves to be a little bitchy, as a treat), heidi starts threading her web through the senate and edits/rewrites the orders so that o66 doesn’t work right, sanya emotionally adopts kenobi-era obi-wan, and gecko shows up to witness the tail end of the sand people massacre and goes “ooh buddy you gots some issues huh” and immediately starts haunting anakin about it

and none of these. NONE of these are anywhere but in my head yet
