Paper Flowers: Everyone falls
But it’s getting up that matters.
People try their best. And sometimes that isn’t enough. But that doesn’t mean one should give up. This week Thomas had a bad night and tensions rose high. Join me in the morning after.
And with the fanders a little pick me up was just what the doctor ordered.
Tumblr media
As usual Virgil woke up to Princey singing at the top of his lungs.
This morning's opening number was 'how far I'll go,' from Moana.
Virgil sighed. Today was going to be a long day. He'd expected as much. After yesterday...
Thomas had gone out with Joan to a party. There'd been a really cute guy. It had been fun and he was charming, a fellow actor even. Things were going so well... until, somehow, they had started talking about social media... YouTube and vine among them. This guy did not like the creator community. And he was very vocal about it. Something about attention seeking talentless idiots giving theater a bad name.
Luckily they made a clean getaway. Roman had played it off last night until he knocked at Virgil's backdoor.
Virgil hadn't needed an explanation. He'd gathered his first aid kit and came into the meadow to tend to Roman's injuries. Roman hadn't wanted to talk last night, so Virgil hadn't pushed him. Hadn't even made him promise to go to Patton if he wasn't feeling better in the morning. Roman usually didn't mind letting Patton look after him, but something told Virgil that he'd come to him for a reason.
He looked at himself in the mirror. "Let's get this over with."
He made his way downstairs for breakfast. He was the first to arrive. Aside from Patton that is.
"Virgil! You're up!" Clearly seeing Virgil was not what Patton expected first thing in the morning.
"Didn't have any other choice with Princey belting Moana in the next room," he grumbled.
Patton visibly relaxed at that. "Roman's singing... good. That's good."
Virgil was pretty sure he was the only one who ever heard Roman sing in his room. He didn't know if it was his heightened senses or something else, but no one ever seemed to complain about it. He'd never confronted Princey with it. First because he was sure Roman would sing even louder the next morning out of spite, and now because he kind of liked hearing a friendly voice first thing in the morning.
Virgil huffed and mumbled something about a bad night as he made himself a cup of chamomile, he needed to calm himself down. He did not like being here this early. Patton was too chipper in general and there was no one to distract him now.
"How did you sleep anxiety?" There it was.
The question, which normally came so easily when directed at anyone else was loaded with tension.
Virgil decided to stick with a shrug. Hoping that would be enough to let Patton feel like he'd met his quota of showing interest in him today. The answer was complicated. He'd been exhausted by the time he was done panicking last night. Especially since he'd tried not to show Princey too much of his worries while patching him up. He was having a rough enough time.
So once he did fall asleep he slept like the dead so to speak. It just took ages to get there.
Once his cup was in his hand he stalked to his seat he got some cereal and started eating. He could feel Patton struggle with something.
"I can practically hear you thinking. If you have something to say, just say it," he huffed, not looking up.
He heard a deep intake of breath.
"You were a bit too hard on Thomas last night."
Of course. Well at least he wasn't tiptoeing around him anymore. Before Patton dragged him to dinner that first time he would be so extremely careful when telling him to soften up. Like he was going to attack him if he said the wrong thing.
"We've established that I do what I do and don't care if you like it or not. Thomas needed to consider these things. You might've wanted him to forget that conversation ever happened but that isn't how real life works," he stated. Thomas had to be aware people thought those things to not get as hurt by meeting someone like that again. Pretending that if was a fluke and didn't matter was not right.
"Good morning Patton... Anxiety. Unusual to see you at the breakfast table,” Logan greeted calmly as he, made his way to the tea kettle. Virgil jumped at the chance to change the topic.
"Am I seriously the only one who heard Princey perform for his teddy bears this morning or what?" Virgil groaned. Logan cocked his head curiously. "Interesting... do you often hear things we do in private?" What? Where did that come from?
"I'm not eavesdropping! I literally woke up from the noise!" he seethed. He knew they didn't like him but did they have to assume everything he said or did had malicious intent?
Logan simply finished making his tea and toast before sitting down.
"Apologies that was perhaps not properly phrased. I just meant to ask if this was a first time or if your hearing simply automatically bypasses the barriers between the rooms all the time."
Oh, Virgil relaxed at that. Log
Oh. Virgil relaxed a little embarrassed he made such a big deal over it. Great job anxiety. Just another reason they would never truly accept you as s friend. Not that he was hoping for that. He was fine. He shrugged. "Princey sings every morning. Sometimes I hear typing from your room." Understatement. It sounded like the keys were about to be chattered under Logan's speed and force whenever he heard it.
"And..." Suddenly he changed his mind, this was all probably really private. He was anxiety. He figured he picked up Princey's singing in the morning no matter what mood he was in because part of him was listening for any noises whether in the real world or Thomas' mind. But the rest… that might be them under stress and he shouldn't expose any of them like that without permission. But asking Pat's permission now would prove he cared and it would out the fact that Patton was hiding stuff.  "Just stuff," he shrugged dismissively getting back to his cereal.
Logan did not get the hint. "I see... would you..."
"Can we keep the third degree for some other time? I'm really not in the mood!" he groaned.
And just then the whole reason he was subjecting himself to this came in. With a smile plastered on his face and a grand gesture. "Good...!"
"No!”Vigrgil exclaimed turning to Roman, hiding his face from the others allowing him a chance to check him over. He seemed alright. But just to be safe. “Especially you! Just shut up! I don't want to hear another word this morning! I came down so I wouldn't have to deal with anyone trying to drag me down for family breakfast or whatever. So let's just eat in freaking silence alright!?" He shouted. He wasn't really that upset. But Princey might still not be up for Patton fussing over him. So Virgil hoped that for once Patton being scared of upsetting him came through in a good way.
“If you insist on making noise, hum or something. Just so long as you shut up for once!” And with that Virgil sat back down and started eating.
He could hear Patton ready himself for a reprimand but it didn't come. He assumed either Logan or Roman had stopped him. Roman sat down and hummed ‘Poor unfortunate souls'. A silent acknowledgment of what Virgil had done.
Breakfast was silent, and Virgil made sure to eat slow enough for Roman to be done before him so he could make a clean getaway. Logan finished first and left without a word.
Roman was next and went straight to the field. Virgil was a little happy to feel his key vibrate in an almost melodious rhythm. Roman's way of inviting him to hang out if and when he felt like it.
He finished his tea and got up. Planning to go straight to the meadow and check prince over. But Patton had other plans.
“Anxiety we need to talk.” Quite possibly one of the worst thing to say to literal anxiety, but okay.
“I feel like I made it clear that we were done. I don’t tell you how to do your thing. So you should do me the same favor,” he huffed before starting to walk away.
“Why didn't you answer Logan's question earlier?” The moral side blurted out.
Virgil, paused, he hadn't expected that. He didn't let that ruin his devil may care act though.  “Didn't feel like it,” he shrugged.
“If that was all, I have to go and contemplate the futility of our existence,” he drawled with a salute.
He hadn't even fully turned around yet before Patton spoke again. Rushed as if trying to get it out before he could think about it. “Did you hear?”
Virgil froze. He knew what Patton probably wanted to remain secret above all else. What he might've worried Virgil overheard with his heightened senses.
He'd almost checked in on him last night, but then realized Patton wouldn't want assurance from him of all sides . What could he even say?
Logan was out too, and Roman was in no shape to take on another side’s troubles.
“Depends…” he turned back to face Patton his face still carefully controlled though he allowed himself to be sincere. “Do you like…” Ugh. He was going to kill Roman for hammering on about giving the others a chance. “Want to talk about it, or something?”
Patton looked surprised. He was silent for a moment, like he was actually considering it.
But Virgil could see how uncomfortable Patton was. Of course. Of course he didn't want to talk about it. Not to Anxiety at least. He hated how much that hurt. What did he expect?
“Then I guess I have no clue what you mean,” Virgil continued casually as he disappeared up the stairs. Not even waiting to get through his room before opening a door with his key. It was risky he knew, but he needed to be somewhere no one could bother him.
“Virgil, you came.” No one except Princey. But he was a special case. Virgil smirked at Roman as he walked over to sit beside him. The relief in Roman's voice and face was unmistakable.
“Of course I did idiot. You didn’t think I was actually mad at you right? We've had enough fights for you to know the difference I’d say,” he teased as he leaned back a little to study the clouds.
“Yeah, I just… I would have understood if you really needed a break. I know eating with us can be stressful, and I left you by yourself…” Virgil sighed, knowing what princey was getting at.
“How are you?” he asked instead glancing at the royal by his side. Trying to spot any sign of his injuries bothering him.
Roman sighed and rolled his eyes. “I’m fine. I took of the bandages this morning and they didn’t need replacing. But thank. Not having to pretend everything was perfectly fine this morning… I needed that. How did you know?” Roman wondered, allowing himself to be distracted for a moment.
“You only sing ‘I want’ songs and power ballads first thing in the morning when you are really down. I was honestly relieved it wasn’t ‘Go the distance’ or ‘Defying gravity’. I honestly don’t know what I would’ve done then.” Not letting Princey force himself to put on a show during breakfast for the others was one thing. But making him stay in bed would be tricky to pull off without letting the others in on what he was doing.
“You… Hear me sing… And you know my mood by what songs I pick?”
Roman sounded moved for some reason.
“Yeah, I think it has to do with being on alert in the morning or something. And I can hear you the others in your rooms when you guys are… Anxious I guess. Logan was a nightmare during finals,” he jests.
“And I learned your mood playlist because it was useful to know when to avoid you and when I could push your buttons a little. I just use my knowledge for good now I guess.”
Roman gave him a playful push. “Aw, don’t lie. You were secretly worried about me when I sang my sad Roman Playlists,” he teased.
Virgil just rolled his eyes. “Whatever.”
“Patton didn’t give you a hard time over this did he? Because I can talk to him later and get him to lay off, I can make an excuse…”
Virgil waved him off. “I’d never let you straight up lie to Patton for me Ro. You know that. And. He just… I let it slip that I heard you singing in your room. You know, to make them think all is fine and dandy. And Logan pointed out that we’re not supposed to hear what happens in each other’s rooms and wondered if I overheard stuff more often. I dodged the question and Patton wanted to know why. Wanted to know what I heard from his room.” It wasn’t exactly what was said but Patton was allowed choose who else knew how badly last night had upset him. Plus Roman would feel guilty if he knew. Virgil curled in on himself and stared ahead as he remembered how the conversation had ended.
“I… Tried to offer to listen if there was something he needed to vent about or something.” He averted his gaze, he didn’t want to even catch a glimpse of Roman’s pity. “Didn’t go well. Not that I expected him to open up to me of all sides. But… I don’t know…”
“It hurts none the less,” Roman said empathically. Virgil chanced a glance and was relieved his friend seemed understanding instead of sorry.
He relaxed a little. “Yeah…” he admitted.
He expected Roman to come to Patton’s defense. To explain why the moral side acted that way, and how good his intentions were.
But instead. “I’m proud of you for trying though. I know that wasn’t easy for you.”
Virgil chuckled. “Thanks,” he allowed.
They sat in comfortable silence for a while.
“Wanna do each other’s nails while we brainstorm something fun for Thomas to do to give him a boost?” Virgil suggested casually after a while.
Roman shot up and ran to his room to get his stuff. Virgil couldn’t help but laugh. That was a yes.
Today was awful. Everything just insisted on going wrong!
You let yourself fall on your bed and pick up your phone hoping to find some kind of escape.
You see a new video from Thomas Sanders. Oh, those are usually funny. Maybe it’ll be a prank or a storytime…
You tap the video and see Thomas pointing at the camera.
“Hey you!” The camera goes up and down and shows the prince smiling at you.
“You gorgeous human being!” he declares grandly. Up and down it goes and the teacher character is looking at you with arms crossed and his head cocked a proud smile on his face.
“You are so smart,” he states with certainty.
This time the camera returns to the dad character his arms close to his chest hands balled in fists near his face, huge goofy grin on his face.
“You are unique!”
And then sleep! Looking like he’s taping in the middle of a party. “Take a nap gurl! You deserve it!”
And lastly the nemesis. He too has his arms folded in front of him but he looks at you with a strange sort of stern yet gentle look.
“You deserve love and respect. No matter what others say,” he tells you seriously.
And damn it. Why did that mean so much!? Maybe just because you kind of needed to hear that right now. Maybe you will have a quick nap.
But not before liking and sharing. Even sending it to a few friends to make them smile.

The Gray (Sanders' Sides)
Six: Drift Away
Tw: breakdown, cursing
"No," Remus whispered. "No, no, not again."
"Remus?" Remus turned to see Orcus staring at him and the boxes. "Janus is gone, isn't he?" Remus shook his head quickly.
"N-no, he said he'd be back. He promised--" Orcus turned and left. "No," Remus screamed. "You promised you'd be back!" He took a few deep breaths to center himself, wiping away his tears. He summoned his phone and called Logan, hands shaking. As it rang and rang, Remus covered his mouth to keep himself from crying. Then--
"Hello. You have reached Logan Sanders. I am unable to answer your call at the moment, but leave a message and I will return it as soon as I'm able." Remus laughed humorlessly as the tone sounded.
"H-hey, Lo. Janus's room moved. You probably already knew that, but.... Orcus isn't taking it that well, and I'm worried he's going to duck out again. I just wanted to let you know in case you and Virgil.... Just in case. Call me when you get this, or if you need me, or.... Whenever, j-just call me, okay?" Remus hung up and hugged his knees to his chest, rocking himself back and forth. He closed his eyes and breathed, trying to hold himself together. After a bit, he fell asleep.
He woke up to someone shaking him gently. "..emus? Remus?" He opened his eyes to see Logan standing over him, worried. "I got your call. I'm sorry I didn't answer. Patton doesn't allow phones during meals."
"'Salright," Remus mumbled. Logan gently rested his hand on his back.
"Are you doing alright? You sounded quite distraught in your message. Do you--"
Remus burst into tears. "I can't do this anymore, Logan," he sobbed. "I can't keep losing people!" He began to tremble, his breath coming out in short gasps.
"Shh, Remus, breathe," Logan said. "I'm right here, love. I'm right here." His voice was soft and loving, the way Janus, Virgil, Roman, and even Patton, once-upon-a-time, had spoken to him. It only made Remus cry harder. He curled in on himself, resting his forehead in Logan's lap with his thighs under his chest. Logan began to rub circles on Remus' back, whispering soothing words to the vounerable side.
"Why does everyone keep leaving," Remus asked when his tears finally slowed down. "Why do you all hate me so much?"
"We don't hate you," Logan murmured.
"Really? Cause years of evidence say otherwise."
"What evidence do you have to support your claim, Remus?" Remus laughed and wiped away a couple stray tears.
"Where do I start? Roman.... Roman left first. He ran off to join you guys because he thought you'd hate him if he hung out with me. And that says he'd throw me away in a heartbeat if he had to choose again. He came back last time to comfort me, but Mr. Perfect Prince can't have anyone upset with him, can he? And then, Virgil. Do or die, my best friend, besides Janus, of course. Then you all accepted him, and he just up and left, without a warning or another word. And now that he's with you guys, I'm suddenly a common cold. It's like years of laughing and daring adventures in the imagination and bugging Janus just..... Don't exist anymore. Like he wishes he never met us. And now Janus is gone, too. I did everything he wanted for months after Virgil left. I was quiet and calm and I never said or did anything normal, or, at least normal for me. It took months of him promising not to leave, months of him letting me sleep in a sleeping bag in front of his door so he couldn't sneak out, months of walking through the imagination with me while he subtlely convinced me to create new monsters and fight old ones for me to be myself again. Even my debut episode took a bit of acting on my part. The entire time, I was scared Janus was going be disgusted with me and leave, even though he's the one who suggested I go and stir things up. And now, it looks like I was right to worry. I was so, fucking right.... Why the hell couldn't I be right about anything else? Patton was grossed out by me the moment I opened my mouth. Shit, even Orcus ducked out again." Remus rolled over so he could breathe, closing his eyes so he wouldn't have to see Logan's face. He opened them out of shock when Logan's fingers relocated themselves to his hair. After a moment, he melted into the soft touch, one of the many things he missed about Janus's friendship.
"What about me," Logan asked. Soft worry, nervousness, and affection glimmered behind the cracks of his carefully neutral expression. "What makes you think I hate you?"
"A month ago, I'd say you told the others to ignore me so I'd go away. That you calmly treated me like an insignificant inconvinience to keep Thomas from taking me seriously." Guilt permeated the softness in Logan's expression, making Remus feel its itchy presence as well.
"Ah. I apologize, Remus. I was trying to do what was best for Thomas. I should have taken your feelings into consideration." Remus sighed.
"You didn't let me finish." Logan's hand left Remus's hair.
"Sorry...." Remus laced his fingers through Logan's.
"Ask me again," he whispered.
"Remus, what makes you think I hate you?" Remus smiled up at him, tears threatening to return.
"You're the only one who cares." Then Logan did something Remus never expected him to. He laughed, then began to cry and laugh at the same time. Remus sat up and tried to wipe Logan's tears away, crying again himself. Logan tried in vain to do the same for Remus and, after a couple of minutes, they stopped and just held each other tightly. They didn't move or speak until Logan's phone buzzed. He picked it up and checked it, keeping an arm around Remus.
"Patton's wondering where I am," he said.
"You should probably head back," Remus answered, leaning his face into the crook of Logan's neck. He didn't want him to leave, but he didn't want anyone to get upset with either of them.
"No," Logan said, thankfully. "They can wait. You need me more." He then silenced his phone and pushed it away from him, wrapping both arms around Remus. They stayed there for an undetermined amount of time before Remus's stomach growled. Logan frowned at him. "Haven't you eaten yet?" Remus shook his head, too tired for words. Logan stood up, still clutching Remus close to his chest. "Let's get you food, then." Logan carried Remus to the table in the kitchen and sat him down. He went through the cabinets and the fridge before grabbing a pan, some eggs and bacon, and a few slices of bread. He cooked everything methodically, like he was following a recipe in his head. Soon, Remus had a plate of eggs, toast, and bacon in front of him. And, because he was too tired for words, he pressed a light kiss to Logan's lips, a gentle, helpless thank you.
And Logan kissed back.
He smiled gently, one of the most beautiful things Remus had ever seen. "You should eat." Remus nodded and took a bite. He then inhaled the rest of the food. He felt better than he had in a long time.
"Thanks for everything, Lo." Logan caressed Remus's cheek.
"You matter, Remus." They leaned in at the same time and shared a sweet, short kiss, then another, and a third.
After that, they heard a smooth voice clear his throat behind them.
"I hope I 'am' interrupting something."

Roman: okay i'm kinda with them on that... i think you're kind of jumping the gun here.........
Remus: Jumping the gun?! Of course Patton loves Deceit, I just don't have any evidence from Patton's perspective!

Remus: YES IT IT!!! I'M TELLING YOU! Just READ what Deceit wrote! Tell me that doesn't SCREAM magenta! Do it, do it, do it, do it-
Roman: Ugh, fine just hand it over! You're so annoying!
Tumblr media
'Patton visited me today. He said something about wanting to discuss things between us as civil sides. Despite being my rival, I found this to be a reasonable arrangement. I had been wishing to speak one on one with him for quite some time. We met up in the middle ground and I provided tea for the two of us. He was polite the throughout our discussion but I could tell there wasn't any real warmth to it. We discussed my future hopes for myself and the other dark sides role in Thomas's decision making and despite his obvious disagreements he never once interrupted me. It was nice to be listened to for once. He promised that we would meet again in a three days time. I look forward to it.'
Tumblr media
'Patton told me something interesting at our meeting today. Apparently, through Remus's little escapade Patton has learned that he had been being too strict on Thomas's moral code. It was a lot of the reason why he had even considered talking to me. To 'try and understand me better'. It really is commendable that despite it all he IS trying to see things from my perspective. It's all i've truly wanted of him really. I went on trying to explain some moral particularism through the use of some philosophers i've been reading up on lately but he didn't seem to really connect. I'll have to try a different approach next time we meet.'
Tumblr media
'I've been learning so many things during Patton and I's talks that it truly boggles my mind. We can go off for what feels like hours in friendly debates and for once I don't care about winning them. I spend my days reading all about moral philosophy and yet this side has taught me so much more than any stupid book ever has. I've realized during today's meeting that I don't even WANT to lie to Patton. He's the first side to show me that there are people worth being honest with, even if it hurts me. He told me that telling the truth is like mental 'growing pains' since we're growing as people every time we tell the truth, even if it hurts a little. It's a bit silly but i've come to find out that nowadays, I rather like silly.'
Tumblr media
'Patton and I's meetings have been quite exhilarating as of late. He's even started reading up on moral philosophy just so we can find more things to dissect. Sometimes he mixes silly things up or mispronounces names but after having spent enough time with him, I believe he's doing this on purpose. I wonder how naive Patton truly is? The question has been plaguing my mind. In fact, everything about him has been intriguing me. Recently we've started to go off topic during our meetings and just... talk about our days. As strange as it may seem I cannot recall the last time anyone has asked about my day. When the subject comes up I usually don't have very much to say. Perhaps I should fix that.'
Tumblr media
'I'm beginning to wonder if our meetings are for business or pleasure. It always starts off with any updates about my efforts sure but without fail we always manage to get off topic. We've begun to discuss personal things, like vulnerabilities or even secrets. He's given me updates about Virgil and i'm very happy to hear he's doing well. I wouldn't trust anyone more than Patton to keep him happy in a way I never could. He even gave me some advice about how to better connect with Remus (which I was grateful for since I often have a difficult time relating to him). Patton called me 'a good dad' and despite my obvious embarrassment at such a term it made me strangely happy.'
Tumblr media
'I don't know if i've mentioned but Patton is extremely funny. I have no clue how i've spent so many years with this side and never realized just how funny he was. There isn't a time where i'm frowning around him and the same goes for Patton. He gives such genuine smiles now. Never the stiff and uncomfortable ones from before but ones that truly reach his eyes. I didn't know it was possible to enjoy another person this much but once again he has opened my eyes. He's even called me a friend multiple times and it makes me giddy like a fool without fail. Patton is actually, truly my friend. (It still feels weird to write it down). The days between out meetings feel longer than ever.
Tumblr media
I don't know what's wrong with me. I'm starting to think I have somehow malfunctioned. I think about Patton all the time and every time I see him I can't help but feel sick to my stomach but in a good way (how is this even possible?). I looked up my symptoms and from what i've seen it cannot possibly be correlated. I mean, I could not possibly have 'a crush' on Patton! That's stupid! We're parts of Thomas, it'd be like dating yourself! Despite all logical sense, my symptoms remain the same. I've began to be extremely awkward around him in a way I never was before. I just hope these feelings go away soon.
Tumblr media
Update: These feelings have not gone away and by the look of things, I don't think they will anytime soon. I'm starting to think the internet was right after something Patton told me today. We were discussing the nature of our existences as sides and how strange it is for us to feel things that go outside of our purpose. I was feeling so frustrated but Patton just smiled and told me that sides don't have to make sense to anyone else. I should enjoy the fact that our existences are so complex. I think i'm going to do just that. So what if I have feelings for Patton? It won't change the quality of our friendship. I've never felt guilty about keeping a secret before but there's a first time for everything I suppose.

--------------------
A lone van drove along the twisted road into the town of Letchworth. The people of the town watched the van through their curtains as it passed by while on it's way to the town's only hotel, Brooks Inn. The town was on fear induced lockdown during the night. But the people in the van couldn't possibly know that.
The people in the van were actually kind of professional sleuths. They had handled countless different mysteries before. Each one ranging from predictable to bizarre with various different monsters as the cause of each one. Of course, the townspeople couldn't possibly know that. So they watched with fear-filled eyes as the van pulled into the Inn's parking lot.
Out of the van came a small odd little group consisting of two glasses-wearing figures, a princely looking fellow, a fellow with dark eyeshadows under his eyes, and a dog. Together, they walked inside the Inn and the townspeople lost sight of them.
-------
An older woman sat at the front desk to the Brooks Inn. The inn was empty, not a guest laid in her rooms. It was to be expected, the recent events have scared away any previous guest and most others left after one night. The old woman, whose name was Agatha, sighed. She wasn't sure why she didn't just close the inn. After all, it was late and recent circumstances provided a bit of a risk in staying open at night. Just as she decided to close the inn, a small group walked in. She quickly put on a small, reserved smile and greeted them. "Hello, welcome to Brooks Inn."
The one in darker blues and glasses stepped forward. "Yes, hello. We would like two rooms for the night please."
The woman nodded. "That will be $75," she said as she moved to grab two keys for each room. She placed the keys on the counter and took the money the man in front of her had placed down. "Can I have a name for the records?"
One of the others spoke up, "Virgil Rogers."
The woman frowned a little before filling out the information on the computer. "Alright," she said. Let me take you to your rooms. She led the group up the stairs and then to their rooms. "Here we are." She handed the keys over. "Rooms 2B and 3B."
"Thank you!" One of the group called. He had glasses and lighter colored clothes.
The one from earlier, Virgil, spoke up as he glanced around suspiciously. "This town seems awfully empty."
The woman bit her lip. "Oh, that." The group became alert and they all turned their attention to her. "Um, recently, we've been having some trouble in town."
"What kind of trouble?" The last human of the group asked. His look seemed to consist of colors one would associate with a prince.
"Well.." The woman hesitated. She didn't want to sound crazy but she decided to just tell the group, it wouldn't be right to keep it from them, they were at risk too, even if they didn't know it. "A phantom has been terrorizing the town recently. They scared off my last paying guest."
The bubbly one's eyes lit up as Virgil groaned. "Well gang, it looks like we've got a mystery to solve!" The woman's eyes widened in surprise. The first one of the group, the one wearing the ascot, spoke up. "We are sleuths. We've solved a few mysteries before. This one will be a breeze. And I assure you, there is most definitely a logical explanation for this."
The woman nodded slowly, not quite believing them. "Well, enjoy your stay," she responded before turning and leaving to go shut down the Inn.
The group watched her go before turning to each other. "Alright, we'll see you tomorrow. Sleep well!" The bubbly one exclaimed and took one of the rooms with the other glasses-wearing figure following him after giving his own good night.
The other two and the dog turned to their own room and closed the door.
--------
The next morning, the gang gathered in the inns dining room to discuss their next move to begin their investigation. "Alright, let's start by looking around for any clues and if we find anyone willing to be interviewed, we'll interview them," Logan explained.
"Sounds like a plan," Patton agreed.
"We're not going to split up, right?" Virgil asked as he scratched behind Thomas's ear.
"Not, yet," Logan answered and pulled a journal out of his bag. "I've written down a few questions and things we should look out for while we're investigating."
Roman rolled his eyes. "Come on, Logan we've been through this a million times. We know what to look out for and what kind of questions to ask. Let's just get going already."
"Be nice," Patton chided.
The group got up and left the Inn and began walking around town. They found it a little weird that the town now seemed so lively. When they had arrived last night, it was still fairly early, far too early for everyone in town to be all locked up in their homes. After walking for a fair amount of time, the gang noticed a few people walking around as if they were on eggshells. Virgil bit his lip before jerking his head at one of them. "Maybe we should ask one of them."
"Alright." Logan walked over to ask if they could interview them while the rest of the gang waited. Soon Logan waved them over. The gang approached as the person before they inspected them carefully. "You said you saw the Phantom," Logan started. "Would you mind telling us about that?"
The person bit their lip and glanced around. "Well," they started. "I was just taking my evening walk. When I started to hear this loud wailing." The person before them shivered. "It was really unsettling, so I turned to go home only to run into the Phantom. It looked like they had stepped straight out of a scary movie. They had pale bluish-grey, ghastly skin and it terrified me." The person sighed. "Ever since then, the Phantom has walked around every night. And two nights ago, they nearly pushed someone off the roof of the library."
The gang shared a glance, they had never dealt with a mystery like this. Sure there were some terrifying monsters they had to deal with but none of them ever put people’s lives at risk. "Did the Phantom say anything to you?" Patton asked.
They nodded. "Yeah, they told me to leave and never return before I regretted it."
Roman's nose wrinkled. "That's interesting. Is there anything else you can tell us about the Phantom?"
The person shook their head. "Nope, I'm sorry."
"That's okay, thank you for your help," Patton said and the gang walked away.
"Do you guys think whatever this phantom wants is something that involves getting all of the people in town to leave?" Roman asked.
Virgil shrugged. "I mean, it seems like it, but why?"
"Let's head back to the Inn for lunch and then I'll do some research on the town and see what I can dig up."
"Sounds like a plan," Virgil said as he ruffled Thomas's head. The gang head back to the Inn. Patton ordered a pizza while Logan went to get his tablet. Roman, Virgil, and Thomas wandered into the dining room to wait for their friends. Soon they were joined by Logan who immediately began working on pulling up the town records, recent articles, the most recent town map, and an older town map. By the time Patton came in with the pizza, Logan had about three different theories about why the town was being haunted and a few different suspects.
"So, what have you discovered, Logan?" Patton asked as the group ate.
"Well," Logan began. "I have found that recently, a wealthy business owner had offered to buy the whole town. But they refused. So he offered to buy single bits of land at a time."
"I thought it might be something like that," Roman piped up.
Logan nodded. "Yeah, I think our most likely suspect is Carl Livingking. He's the business owner. Although why he would want to buy up the town, I haven't a clue."
Virgil bit his lip, "I have to agree, that seems like the most likely situation. But why would he go to the lengths of risking people's lives to get the town? I mean, it seems like he's trying to scare people off, and you can do that without putting people's lives at risk so why is he doing it?"
Logan shrugged. "That's what I can't seem to find anything on. The land isn't even that good. But something tells me that we're missing out on an important clue."
"Hey, L," Virgil started. "Can I borrow your tablet for a minute?"
"Sure."
Virgil quickly opened a new tab and did a quick google search. Soon he found something that looked promising. "Maybe you can't find anything, because this town is fairly new." He spun the tablet around to face the rest of the table. Thomas hopped up on a chair to get a closer look. "It says here that apparently, the land that this town sits on is part of a larger area that is said to be the hiding grounds of the legendary Sanderson Gang."
"Oh, I've read about them!" Logan exclaimed. "They were train robbers. They stole over two million dollars worth of coins and precious stones. But they were never caught. No one knows where the loot went. Rumors spread that it was somewhere in this area but most people thought the gang had fled the country with their treasures and settled down on a remote island somewhere in the Pacific. Eventually, the rumors died down and some people settled down here and started a town. Since then, the Sanderson Gang faded into legend and most people forgot they were real people."
"So Mr. Livingking must be trying to find the treasure," Patton exclaimed.
"And what better way than to buy up all the land, evict the town and start a massive expedition."
"He could keep people out and avoid anyone trying to steal the loot."
Logan nodded. "Yes. It seems so, he isn't doing a good job of covering his tracks. He was actually able to buy a nearby abandoned factory."
The gang went silent as they looked between each other. "Should we set up a trap?"
Roman asked.
Logan bit his lip. "It would be wise. During my research, I found that the Phantom has put two people in the hospital with near-death experiences. Even if it's not him, the Phantom is clearing trying to scare people out of the town so they should still turn up if we are out at night."
"Yeah, I'd rather have a trap for the most likely culprit already then not have one and risk someone else getting hurt," Patton agreed.
"Alright, so what's the plan?" Virgil asked as Thomas hopped up on the chair beside him.
Logan quickly opened the drawing app on his tablet and began to sketch out a plan.
"Okay, Patton, Roman and I will set up a trap in the town square-"
"Oh don't tell me," Virgil started. "Thomas and I are gonna be the bait."
"Well, you two are the faster runners out of all of us," Logan explained. "It's only logical." Virgil and Thomas pouted. Logan rolled his eyes.
"Would you do it for a Thomas Treat?" Patton asked Thomas. The dog's ears perked up a bit but he stayed still.
Roman poked Virgil with his foot. "Do it or you're straight."
Virgil sputtered. "Don't threaten me!"
Roman snorted. "Then do it."
Logan rolled his eyes at the two childhood friends. As Patton finally convinced Thomas. And it only took ten Thomas Treats. "Okay, I need you two to go on a walk around town. Virgil, I need you to talk out loud about buying the whole town with Thomas. It'll be like you surveying what you're going to buy while taking your dog for a walk." Virgil cringed, not likely the idea of acting like one of those rich people. "I want you to eventually end up at the abandoned factory and if you happen across the Phantom, lure him back to the square. Okay?"
Virgil groaned. "Yeah, I guess."
"Great," Logan said and the gang continued to flush out their plan. In the end, they came up with an elaborate trap, one of the few things Logan allowed himself to be elaborate in, that included the entire town square. They were to block off all other entrances into the square except for the one leading to the factory. Virgil and Thomas would lead the Phantom into the square where they jump on a trampoline in front of the town hall and jump up onto the balcony and when the Phantom tried to jump on it, Logan would click a button to release the mechanism which would cause the trampoline to be pulled along a track and drive him right into a giant ball out in front of an apartment building where Patton and Roman would drop a large net over from the top of the building. The plan was flawless.
-------
Virgil and Thomas walked through the old factory apprehensively. "I don't know about you, Thomas, but this place is really too scary." Thomas nodded his head in agreement as they walked. "Like, I think there's no one here, so let's go." Just as Virgil and Thomas turned to go, a loud wailing sounded throughout the factory, bouncing off old machinery and creating a terrifying echo.
"Get out!!!!!" Virgil and Thomas froze. The wailing got louder until the Phantom stood right in front of them. "GET OUT!!!" It screeched.
"Don't worry, we are!" Virgil shouted and he turned tail and ran with Thomas running along beside him. The Phantom chased after them with a terrible that grated at their ears. They raced through town but ended up getting turned around. Eventually they scaled up a fire escape and ended up on the roof of Town Hall. They skidded to a stop as they got to the edge. They gulped as they looked down at the trampoline below them, a jump from this height would still be risky. But soon the Phantom was behind them. And before anyone could blink, Thomas and Virgil jumped.
--------
Roman groaned as he waited. "Where are they?" He asked Patton. The other shrugged. Just then, as he glanced around the square, he noticed Thomas and Virgil on the opposite roof with the Phantom close behind. Roman's eyes widened in fear. Before he could say anything, the two jumped off. "Virgil!!" Roman screamed.
It all happened in a blur. The Phantom jumped off too and bounced right back into the air after landing on the trampoline. They flew in an arch and landed into the ball pit. Roman and Patton dropped the blanket in shock and raced off the building quickly as they could. Meanwhile, Logan raced over to the ball pit with the police. The Phantom was indeed trapped. "Just hold on," Logan told them before meeting up with Roman and Patton. "What exactly happened?"
Tears streamed down Roman's face as he answered. "They jumped off the roof!"
"What?!?!!?" Logan exclaimed. "Where are they????" Roman went to answer only for a shout to draw their attention.
The gang turned to find Thomas and Virgil stumbling out of the doors of town hall. The world around Roman stopped. The noises and flashing lights of the police cars fading into the background. Images flashed through Roman's mind. They have been best friends since birth. This was the boy who dyed his hair neon green on a date, the boy who ran to his house to show him his new dog, the boy who continuously jumped into terrifying situations willingly for his friends despite his fear. And suddenly the realization that he was so irreversibly and incredibly in love with.
Roman marched as fast as he could to Virgil without running. His hands cupped Virgil's face as soon as he reached him. He slowly leaned in and kissed the other softly. Virgil returned the kiss without hesitation. It was so much better than either could have imagined.
Tumblr media
Thomas howled approvingly as Patton and Logan clapped. Eventually the two pulled away. "How did you-"
"I found some rope and tied it around my waist and a hook on the roof before I jumped and we swung down into the open window."
"I was so worried."
"I'm okay. I'm okay."
"I think we should just hurry up and wrap this mystery up and get out of here," Patton said.
"Agreed," Roman and Virgil said in sync. The gang moved over to where the police handcuffed the Phantom. Roman clung to Virgil, which made it a little difficult for them to move, but they managed.
Logan walked over and grabbed the mask. "This is none other than Carl Livingking!" He exclaimed.
"What?" The sheriff asked.
"Carl had learned about the legend of the Sanderson Gang's loot and decided to look for it. So he offered to buy up the town. But when he was refused he decided to try and scare everyone out so he could begin looking for the treasure."
Carl huffed. "Yeah, and I would have gotten away with it too if it weren't for you meddling kids and your dog."
----------
Roman sighed as he laid in the back with Virgil, clinging to him like a kola. "I'm sorry again, Thomas." Thomas turned his head back to face them from his spot in the front seat as if to say it was okay. Roman smiled and nudged his face into Virgil's chest. Virgil pulled him closer and they slowly fell asleep. Content being in each other's arms.

Not In Kansas Anymore
Heyooo! So a bit ago, I had a little convo with @spiderversetweets and then I decided to make a fic based off of it, because I'm hella cringey. This might be bad, but whatev. This is the refined version, it's also posted on Wattpad and some of the writting is different.
Wattpad link:
Characters: Helena/MindFang (oc), Virgil/SpiderGale, Roman/Royal Slinger, Patton/LoveBite, Logan/Arachne, Thomas/Rainbow Weaver, MJ (oc)
Summary: MindFang gets stick in a certain spidey boy's room, and is ultimately stuck in his dimension as well. How will she get home?
--------------------------------------------------
MindFang opened her eyes and groaned. What the hell had just happened? One minute she was swinging through Laurence and the next she was zipping down a tube of big time acid trips only to wake up in pain and...in a dark purple room? She sat up and looked around. There were band posters, black clothing items scattered about, and black out curtains. "What kinda emo lives here?" She mused to herself. "Where are we?" Asked the tiny voice of Rosie as she scuttled up MindFang's arm. "I have no clue." MindFang responded. She pulled down the hood of her cloak and took off her mask. A confused look came over her round, freckled face. She pulled out her phone and opened Twitter.
'MFangOfficial: Ok y'all, don't panic (I'm already doing enough of that), but I'm suddenly in someone's room. It's dark and really purple, but I have no idea how I got here.'
With that, she posted it. She signed and scrolled around until she started getting blown up with notifications. 'OMG, you ok?' 'Sis, you need us Topekans to rescue you this time?' '@MFangOfficial idk why, but mood.' She smiled and replied to any and all of them. One in particular grabbed her attention. 'SpiderGaleOfficial: Don't touch anything, I'm on my way.' She stared for a moment at the response. SpiderGale? Was that..a YouTuber? Or was she not alone?
'MFangOfficial:@SpiderGaleOfficial I give you my word. I like your spider though. Also, thanks.'
MindFang thought a moment. Could there really be someone else with abilities like hers? Well, outside her family that is. She watched as Rosie climbed up the leg of the table with a spider tank resting on it. The rose-knee curiously peered through the glass. The spider on the other side scuttled up to her.
'SpiderGaleOfficial: He's a chill little dude.'
MindFang glanced back up at the spiders with a smile as they began to chatter at each other.
'MFangOfficial: Indeed he is. I kinda wanna hold him, but I promised. He's a tarantula right?'
She sat down on the floor. Holding up her mask she rubbed a thumb over it in thought. MindFang pulled the mask back on. She didn't know if this person was actually a superhero. They could be some Average Joe. The last thing she needed was some civilian finding out her identity. That would only add on to the stress today had brought her.
'SpiderGaleOfficial: Yes, he is. If he lets you hold him go ahead.'
MindFang smiled brightly under her mask. She gently lowered her hand into the tank and offered it. The tarantula inside came closer. He hesitated before gingerly walking onto her hand. He happily chirped at her a greeting as she held him up. Rosie jumped onto her and made her way to her new buddy.
'MFangOfficial: You're a real pal. Oh he's so sweet.'
"Who are you texting, Helena?" The tiny voice of Rosie asked. Helena looked up from her phone. "The owner of your new friend." She told her. "Ask them for his name." Rosie said glancing back to the other tarantula. Helena cocked a brow. "Can't you ask him?" Rosie giggled at her. "Yes, and I already did, but you may as well make conversation." She said with a playful smirk in her voice. Helena sighed.
'What's his name btw?'
'SpiderGaleOfficial: I'll tell you when I get there.'
'MFangOfficial: 👌'
Helena eyed her spider companion. "You're a little shit, ya know." She said. "Don't forget it." Rosie laughed. Helena chuckled a bit herself. She felt a tingling sensation in the back of her head. "His name is JD." Came a new voice.
The masked girl turned around to see a boy in a purple and white onesie climbing in through the window. Helena's eyes widened as his did as well. The rest of the world seemed to tune out as an aura of purple and dark grey with bolts of bright lightning seemed to surround him. "..you're just like me." They spoke in unison. Helena went over and began to circle him. "That can't be right. I thought it was just me and my siblings. Is that hoodie built in?" She stopped in front of him, "God I love your suit." SpiderGale chuckled. He extended his hand and she shook it. Helena took off her mask once more. "By the way, I'm Helena." She told him, a smile settling onto to her freckled cheeks. The boy removed his own mask and shook out his purple hair. "Virgil." Helena couldn't help but chuckle. "Nice to see we have similar taste in hairstyles." She said, pointing out their heads being shaved on the same side, hers being wavy and auburn while his was straight and naturally dark with the longer part dyed.
Virgil took his turn to pace around her. Studying her. The two tarantulas on her shoulders, one of them being JD,  the silver lining on her suit and cloak, the cool color scheme, the thigh-high Nightvale purple boots. "How did you get in here?" He asked. Helena ran a hand through her half a head of hair. "Well, that's the thing. I'm not entirely sure. I was sucked into some colorful tunnel and then woke up in here. That probably makes me sound like a crackhead though." Virgil stopped in front of her. "It sounds like you need to go home."
"So you said you can clearly communicate with spiders?" Talyn asked Helena as they examined her. "Uh, yeah." Helena watched them. Joan stood back and took notes. "Interesting." Talyn mused. Virgil cleared his throat, gaining everyone's attention. "I think you're getting a little off topic." He said, raising a brow. "Oh, right. Sorry, it's just so fascinating is all." Talyn apologized, stepping away from Helena. They went over to join Joan and began quickly muttering to them.
Virgil stepped over to Helena. "Sorry about that, they tend to get sidetracked when something tickles their curiosity." He explained. "It's fine, I guess. I just didn't think my powers were all that interesting or whatever." She shrugged.
"Well, they are when my friends and I can only partially make out what they say."
"There's more than one of you??"
"Yeah. What, are you the only one where you come from?"
"Well, no. My sister got bit as well and my brother made something called a symbiote."
Virgil raised his eyebrows. "Huh, we have someone with a symbiote here too." Helena looked down at the floor. "What the fuck." She whispered.
Joan and Talyn came back over to them. "Ok, after talking it over we think we can get you home. Although, it may take a while to make the machinery needed." Joan told Helena. "How long would 'a while' be?" She asked. "About five weeks if we can get Logan to help. Interdimensional transport isn't exactly common or anything." Talyn explained. Helena felt her stomach drop. Five weeks? Oh God, what was she supposed to tell her parents? Could she even contact them? Tears began to sting her eyes. She turned around and walked a few paces away. No. God no. Not here. Not now.
"Helena, you ok?" She heard Virgil's voice ask. "YeAH." She replied. Damn it, that voice crack would give her away. Hesitantly, Virgil placed a hand on her shoulder. "Hey, look at me." Despite every red flag her brain was sending her about letting him see her like this, she faced him. "Breath with me. In for three, hold for four, out for seven." He instructed as he demonstrated for her. After a few rounds of this, Helena had seemed to calm down. "Better?" He asked. She nodded. "Better"
Helena had been taken and introduced to Virgil's friends; Logan, Roman, Patton, and Thomas, who seemed more like a tired dad than a friend. Patton flopped down next to her on Thomas' couch. "So, if you're stuck here for five weeks, where are you going to stay?" He asked her. Helena's face fell. "Oh, uh, I hadn't really thought of that." Helena admitted. "And what are you going to wear? Don't get me wrong, I love your suit, but that can't be all you have, is it?" Roman added. "...My civilian clothes are back home." She mumbled. The boys all looked at each other before leaning in and quietly discussing the situation. Helena tuned them out and began to fret all over again. Where was she going to stay? Perhaps she could just bum around town and live like the homeless for the next few weeks? Did they have a homeless shelter perhaps?
The boys stopped talking and turned back to Helena. "Well, I guess you could stay with me for now." Thomas offered. The girl was taken aback. "Oh no, I don't wanna be a bother!" She argued. Thomas shook his head. "You wouldn't. It's not like these guys don't frequently come and go from here." He insisted. Helena was about to debate the offer all over again when the door opened.
A red-haired man walked in and over to Thomas. He slipped his arms around the other's shoulders. "Hey, guys." He greeted with a smile. "Hey, MJ." The boys replied in unison. The man, known as MJ, spotted Helena. The girl was caught off guard and ended up making eye contact. She nervously waved. "Who's this?" MJ asked, standing up straight. "This is Helena. She's a long ways from home." Thomas explained.
"How far?"
"A whole other world far."
"Yikes."
"Yeah. I was just telling her that she could stay here with us until Joan and Talyn finish their transporter."
MJ's eyes shined as he looked back up at Helena. "I think that's a great idea." Helena mentally sighed. It seemed there was no way of getting out of this.
Living with Thomas and MJ turned out to be pretty nice. Thankfully she was able to give her parents an excuse for her absence. Since she had been at the library, last they knew, she had gotten some of her friends to agree to be her scapegoat. As far as her parents were concerned, she was spending the next few weeks at with the Loockes. Through her experience there, she had come to know the rest of the boys pretty well. Roman had insisted on taking her out shopping so she could look her best. Thanks to him, she had practically an entirely new wardrobe. Patton had shown her how to bake practically every kind of cookie. When Logan wasn't helping Joan and Talyn, she'd let him ramble about whatever topic he wished. She thought the number of things he knew was fascinating. Virgil was a lot like her in some ways. They often sat around sending memes to each other and discussing horror movies. By the end of it, they had all become good friends. The time did come, however, for Helena to go home.
She had been sitting on the couch drawing with Roman and talking about cartoons they watched as kids when Logan came into the room. "Helena, it's finished." He informed her. She stared back at him in wonder and blinked a few times. "It is?" Logan nodded. She looked down at her sketchpad. "I honestly thought I'd be a little more excited to go home." She said with a half-hearted chuckle. Roman reached over and patted her back.. "We'll miss you too." A sad smile rested on his face. He understood what she meant.
Helena went to pack what belongings she had. While folding and putting away all the clothes Roman had picked out for her, the door to the room burst open. Before she could fully process the outburst a pair of arms were hrown thrownaround her. "I can't believe it's over already!" Wailed the voice of Patton. Helena smiled when she realized who it was that attack-hugged her. She returned the hug, getting a bit misty-eyed. "I know. I'm gonna miss you,, Pat." She said softly. "Ok Patton, give her some space." Virgil laughed from his leaning position in the doorway. Patton pulled back with a slight whine and glossy eyes. "How did you guys know I was leaving right now?" Helena asked them. Roman stepped in. "I may have texted them." He admitted.
Logan came into the room as well. "Helena, could I see your phone?" The girl complied and handed it over to him. He took off the back and slid what looked like some kind of SD card into it. He popped the back on again and handed it back to her. "When you activate that, it should allow you to keep your contact with us." He explained. Helena smiled so warmly. "Thank you, Logan." Virgil punched him in the arm. "You softie." He teased.
Eventually, Helena had been all packed up, even between all the chatter. She had said her final goodbyes and received an especially long hug from Patton and MJ at the same time. With one more round of goodbyes, she was transported back home in a flash of bright white.
After she had come back inside and spun a tale of what she had 'been up to with the Loockes, she went down to her room and flopped onto her bed. Her phone buzzed as Rosie crawled out of her pocket. Helena pulled out the device. 5 messages from SpiderGang. A smile crept over her face as she tapped on the chat bubble.
PattonCake: Hi Helena!
Sir-Sings-A-Lot: With one more round of goodbyes, she was transported back home in a flash of blindingly bright white.
When she opened her eyes, she was standing on the corner of her block. Looks like those two had a pretty precise aim. She walked up to the front door of her home and knocked. Once her parents had finished interrogating her about what she and the Loockes had been up to, she escaped downstairs to her room. Flopping onto her bed, she felt her phone buzz. Rosie crawled out of her jacket pocket as she pulled the device out. 5 messages from Spider Gang. A smile crept onto her face as she tapped the chat bubble.
PattonCake: Hi Helena!
Sir-Sing-A-Lot: @Bi-Stander Greetings!
Pocket-Protector: If the chip is functioning, salutations.
Dark-And-Stormy-Night: Yo
Could-Be-Gayer: Hey, kiddo
Tears of joy began to sting her eyes as she read over the messages.
Bi-Stander: Hey guys

Soft-Shoe Shuffle - Ch 9
Tumblr media
Chapter: 9/12 Additional Notes: See Ch 1 for more information. Read on AO3 under "WizardGlick." Any formatting/italics errors are holdovers from AO3 that I was too lazy to fix. Chapter Content Warnings: N/A; ask to tag Excerpt: "You don't think he's in love with you, do you?" Roman asked in a strained tone. Silence. "Do you?" Roman demanded. "Oh my god," Virgil said through gritted teeth. Janus could practically hear his jaw creaking. "Virgil!" Roman whisper-shouted.
That's my story and I'm stickin' to it
That's my life and all that I've got
Call me a liar, call me a writer
Believe me or not, believe me or not
The sound of a door open and closing startled Janus out of his dreams so violently that he jerked and gasped before falling still again.
Silence followed, but he kept his eyes closed and tried to orient himself. He felt like Remus had used him as a training dummy and remembered very little of the reason why .
Roman's voice broke the silence. "It's not your shift yet, Smoke on the Water."
"I thought you could use the company," Virgil said. "And maybe I missed you."
"Oh, don't lie." Roman sighed and his breath ghosted over Janus' cheek. He was close, then. "That's his job."
Virgil scoffed. "Not anymore, apparently."
Janus focused on keeping his breathing even. It wouldn't do to get caught now of all times.
"You don't buy it?" Roman asked.
"I don't know!" Virgil exclaimed, loud enough to make Janus flinch. In a softer voice, he continued, "I guess people can change. I mean, I did. But it was gradual, and this seems… It seems awfully sudden for a change of heart, especially for someone as stubborn as him."
"You don't think he's in love with you, do you?" Roman asked in a strained tone.
Silence.
"Do you?" Roman demanded.
"Oh my god," Virgil said through gritted teeth. Janus could practically hear his jaw creaking.
"Virgil!" Roman whisper-shouted.
"Have you noticed Patton calling him 'honey'?" Virgil whispered back.
"Wait… You don't think--"
"I don't know!"
"But Patton wouldn't--" Roman tripped over the end of his sentence. "Not him-- "
"You don't just fall in love overnight. What if this some… some campaign for Patton's love?"
"Like a quest?" Roman asked.
Janus nearly laughed. Leave it to Virgil to land three steps to the left of the correct conclusion. And leave it to Roman to spur him on.
Despite the ache in his joints and desperate dryness of his mouth, Janus could feel his mind sliding back toward sleep. There would be no fighting it unless he moved, and he couldn't move without giving up the game.
Oh, well.
"It makes sense, doesn't it?" Virgil asked. "Janus doesn't apologize. Janus doesn't do anything unless it serves some sort of end."
"And where does collapsing in my room factor into this master plan?"
"I don't know," Virgil said. "Maybe this part was just bad luck." He sighed and pulled the covers higher up Janus' chest. "It's weird seeing him like this?"
"...Asleep?"
"No, genius. Vulnerable. He doesn't show weakness either."
"Ah, Virgil," Roman said delicately, after a moment's silence. "Not that I'm the best at math, mind you, but something isn't adding up."
"What do you mean?"
"According to Logan, Janus knew he was sick when he came to visit me. Nearly fainted in the kitchen, from what he said. If he's so averse to showing weakness, as you say, why wouldn't he just, you know, wait?"
"...Huh."
"And why would he apologize to me in private? If he wanted to look good in front of Patton, surely he would have found some way to confront me in front of Patton. Janus is still a part of Thomas; he likes an audience. "
Virgil let out a short puff of air through his nose and said nothing for a few moments. "Well… Maybe I shouldn't jump to conclusions like that."
"It's good that you want to be careful," Roman said with undisguised fondness in his voice. Janus almost frowned. Roman and Virgil, really?
"I guess I'll have to wait and see. I really want to know why he keeps calling my name. Rem-- Uh. Okay. Remus said he did it a bunch yesterday."
"He's not Voldemort; you can say his name around me."
"I don't want to make you upset, that's all."
Virgil's words spun lazy circles in Janus' mind, and whatever Roman replied was lost in the rolling fog.
He had expected Virgil to be mistrustful of him; he had every right to be. Janus had expected him to make conspiracies out of nothing and it didn't hurt his feelings.
It also didn't make him happy, not at all, that Roman had defended him with nothing to gain from it.
Sleep came languid and slow, and for once not accompanied by tongues of fire.
--
Maybe it was luck or maybe it was Virgil's sense of duty, but the next time Janus opened his eyes, it was Virgil that he saw.
Virgil's eyes widened almost comically and he froze.
For a moment, they just stared at each other. Then Janus regained his wits and said, in a tone like they were coworkers who had just passed each other in the hall, "Good morning, Virgil."
Virgil opened his mouth, closed it, opened it again. "It's afternoon."
"Well. Forgive me for not counting the hours when I was unconscious," Janus said with venom. Because he was scared.
Virgil scowled at him. "Whatever. Glad you're not dead. I'll go get Patton now."
"No, wait." Janus tried to sit up, hating how his arms shook. He brought out another set to assist, as Virgil seemed disinclined to help, or do anything other than just stare at him. "Force of habit."
"Yeah," Virgil said. "I heard you were on an honesty campaign." The disdain in his voice was almost painful. "Let me guess: You're so sorry for how you treated me in the past. You were jealous because I got what you always wanted and you didn't know how to handle it so you lashed out like the snake you are. And then you couldn't apologize because you were trapped in the image you'd created for yourself, only now, now it's falling down around you and you don't even have your precious pride to stand on, and now there's only one thing left to do." Virgil broke off, a little out of breath. "So you come crawling on your belly to me. The last item on your little 'good person' checklist."
Janus shook , and no amount of blankets could melt the ice that crawled down his veins. Virgil's image blurred, cold tears threatening to spill over. And really, what did Janus have left to lose? Hadn't he earned this? At the end of the day, he was the architect of his own demise.
"For what's it's worth, Virgil," he said, his voice so cracked and rasping he barely even recognized it, "I am sorry. I was jealous. And… I tied my own hands. I see that now."
"So you're saying…" Virgil straightened a little. "You were wrong?"
"Yes, Virgil. I was wrong."
Virgil laughed.
He doubled over, shoulders spasming, and laughed until his face turned red and tears ran down his cheeks. "I can't-- I can't believe this…"
"Um, Virgil?" Janus' humiliation gave way to concern as Virgil's breaths became more and more erratic.
"You have no idea how long I've been waiting to hear you say," Virgil said. "I had so many ideas for how I was going to throw it back in your stupid, smug snake face." He wiped his eyes even as more tears fell.
Janus just stared at him.
"Here's what's funny," Virgil continued. "Now… Now that it finally happened and I have you right where I want you, I don't want to do it ."
"You--" Janus' heart leapt. "You believe me?"
"I believe you." Virgil looked at him, eyes still shining. "But only because you look so sweet holding that teddy bear."
"What?" Janus looked down and realized with a jolt that he did indeed have a stuffed bear tucked under his arm. It was pale brown with white felt on the paws and ears, and was wearing a little T-shirt with 'get well beary soon!' printed on it. "Patton."
"Patton," Virgil said with a nod.
Janus looked around properly for the first time and he realized that Patton was not the only one who had left a gift.
A magnificent bouquet of white roses dominated his nightstand, nearly overshadowing a smaller bouquet of baby's breath and hydrangeas in a Mason jar. Behind the vases stood a 6-pack of blue Gatorade, and balanced on the lids was a small, handmade book.
Virgil noticed him staring and passed over one of the Gatorades, breaking the seal on the lid so Janus wouldn't have to struggle with it.
"Um, Virgil," Janus said, taking a shaky sip and realizing he wasn't wearing his gloves. He grit his teeth and tried not to mind. "I do understand if you don't want to be around me right away."
Virgil shook his head. "I'm done being mad."
"...Just like that?"
"I…" Virgil bit down hard on his lip. "I'm making the choice to forgive you. And maybe I'm being naïve and maybe you'll sink your fangs into my neck the second my guard is down, but… Well, you know, maybe for once the best-case scenario will happen and we'll all be best friends and Thomas will never have problems again."
Janus smiled. "You've changed, Virgil. A lot."
"Yeah, well." Virgil shrugged. "So have you, I think."
Janus raised an eyebrow. "Oh?"
Virgil leaned in, his grin wolfish and wide. "You're still holding the teddy bear."
Janus' face burned, but he for once made no effort to hide it. "It was a gift, Virgil, it would be rude to--"
"Stop snuggling it and put it with your other gifts?"
Janus closed his eyes and let his head rest against his headboard. "Yes."
"Airtight argument," Virgil said, but the laughter was gone from his voice. "I should get Logan. And you should finish your Gatorade. You probably feel pretty shitty, huh?"
"No, Virgil, I feel fantastic."
"I'm gonna let that slide because you're half-dead."
"Mm." Janus slid further down, gently aware of the Gatorade bottle tipping in his hand.
"Okay." Virgil grabbed the bottle. "No spilling. I'm gonna leave this here with a straw in it. You'd better drink some."
"Okay," Janus said, though he had no intention of doing so. Exhaustion washed over him, a rising tide promising to drag him under.
"You know, once word gets out that you're… not, like, delirious anymore, everybody's going to come running."
"Then don't tell," Janus mumbled, rolling over and pulling the covers up over his head.
"Are you really going back to sleep? You just woke up!"
"Just readjusting."
"Sure."
Janus sighed and wriggled so just his face was poking out from underneath the covers. "Happy?"
"I just don't think you should go back to sleep without drinking something. And no, one tiny sip of Gatorade doesn't count."
"You want to talk to me." Janus was too tired to properly revel in his information, so he settled for a smirk. It was difficult to do with half his face smushed into the mattress, but he was well-practiced.
"Keep pushing and I'm gonna start reading to you from Remus' book of dirty limericks. He hand-wrote that for you, by the way."
"What?" Janus fought to keep the nervous edge out of his voice.
"He said it was an inside joke."
With a concentrated effort, Janus sent the booklet to the top shelf of his closet. He doubted even Remus was reckless enough to expose Janus'... total lack of romantic feelings for Patton in such a careless manner, but still. Better safe than sorry. "Virgil?"
"Hm?"
"What did you get me? I assume the roses are from Roman and the Gatorade is from Logan."
"And the blue flowers are from Patton also."
"Surely they guilt-tripped you into livening up my deathbed as well?"
"My gift was more... abstract."
"Not smothering me to death with Patton's teddy bear does not count as a gift."
"Oh, no." Virgil smirked. "I told Patton how you really take your coffee."
The uncomfortable feeling of being not only seen, but known made Janus hide his face under the comforter again. "You didn't."
"Oh, I did. He knows all about your whipped cream addiction."
" Virgil."
"You're welcome, honey."
Janus went completely still. Half-formed memories of Roman and Virgil conversing in his room swam around his head and oh. Virgil had guessed it. Part of it, anyway. Janus had thought he'd let it go with the rest of his little conspiracy theory, but… And now he'd just completely missed his chance to bluff. He tried anyway. "If this is your way of calling me sweet--"
"Busted," Virgil interrupted.
"Go back to being scared of me," Janus muttered into the blankets.
"Look," Virgil said, voice deadly serious. "I can't tell you what to do, but I swear to all things dark and stormy, if you break Patton's heart, I'll break you ."
"I don't--" Janus tried. "I-- We're not…" He made an exaggerated, high-pitched coughing sound. "I'm going to tell Logan that you antagonized me while I was trying to sleep."
"Oh, please."
"And Patton and I aren't-- He doesn't-- He doesn't feel that way about me."
"That fever must have evaporated some of your brain cells," Virgil said.
Janus was inclined to agree, although for different reasons-- He couldn't think of a single way to change the subject. He settled for a long, drawn-out hiss.
"Just talk to him, okay?" Virgil said. "Or don't. Actually, don't."
"I don't need your permission to start dating Patton," Janus spat, forgetting himself.
"So you do want to date him."
"...No."
"I believe you."
"I'm going back to sleep now."
"Gatorade first." Virgil drew the covers back and held the bottle up to Janus. There was a straw in it now, a purple bendy straw that poked Janus in the lip. He fixed Virgil with a death glare and was privately relieved to see Virgil shrink back under its intensity. Like a river changing course, the parts of Janus that made him who he was were still there, even if his direction had altered.
That was good enough for him.
But he still wasn't going to let Virgil nurse him like he was some kind of helpless baby animal.
Careful not to drop the teddy bear, Janus sat up and took the bottle from Virgil. He drank half of it before his shaking hands gave up on him.
"Go to sleep," Virgil said, setting the bottle on the nightstand. "I'll tell the others not to crowd you." He turned to leave.
Janus almost let him. "Thank you, Virgil. And…" He'd had quite enough of showing his belly, and yet…. "I really am sorry. For everything."
"I know, Janus. Get some rest."

The Story (Sanders' Sides Human AU)
Ft. Platonic Moxiety, trans Roman, Imaginality (Remus x Patton), and Emciet (Janus x Emile)
Tw: suicide, homophobia, implied abuse, transphobia, f*g said, tra**y said, bullying, anorexia
--------------------------------------------------
Patton stared at his phone. He had a shift at the office in a few minutes, but he couldn't..... He didn't quite know what he couldn't do today, but he couldn't do it. He called in sick. Emile was very understanding. "Take as long as you need, Pat," he said. "Your mental health comes first."
"Thanks, Dr. Picani." He hung up and continued to stare at the message on his phone.
Unknown Number
Got ur number from Jan. How u doing?
It was him. After all these years, it was really him. And, paired with the fact that it was only a week till his brother's birthday.... The last two years of high school came rushing back.
Patton's phone chimed.
Ro's birthday is coming up.
Like Patton didn't compulsively write down the date in his calender every year. June 4. They would have been twenty-six.
I'm moving to ur area 4 work. I finally caught up 2 u.
Patton stared at his phone without really seeing the messages. Tears started to bluer his vision. He wiped them away, only for them to return with a vengeance. Finally, Patton just let himself sob, hoping to get everything out by the time Virgil got home.
***
Virgil waved to his friends as he walked to his front door. His dad's car was in the driveway, which was a surprise. Normally, he wouldn't be back until dinner. He slowly opened the door. "Dad," he asked. Patton gave Virgil a smile that didn't quite reach his eyes.
"Hey, kiddo! How was school?"
"Okay. How are you doing? Are you sick?"
"No, no, I'm fine. Just taking a mental health day. Sit down! I made popcorn. We can watch Black Cauldron."
Virgil sighed and sat down, leaning on Patton. Patton put part of his blanket around the teen and pulled him closer. He loved his son more than anything. He would not let Virgil go through the same things he did.
***
Just as Virgil was about to go to sleep, someone knocked on his door. "Come in," he called. Patton opened the door and gave him another fake smile. He sat down on the chair beside Virgil's desk.
"Can I tell you a story," Patton asked.
"I'm a little old for bedtime stories."
"Please? It's kinda boring, but.... I'll be quick. Please?" Virgil stared at his dad. He hated the desperate look in hs eyes. It was getting closer to June, which meant he'd grow quiet and a bit withdrawn. Maybe this was to preemptively make up for it?
"Sure." Virgil laid down and looked up at Patton.
"Thanks, Virge," he said with a slightly more real, relieved smile. "Let me tell you a story about six boys growing up in Florida."
***
Logan Crofters, Roman and Remus Ryan, Janus Pine, Emile Picani, and Patton Hart. They had been best friends since kindergarten. They were all inseparable. Things got worse in middle school when Roman came out as trans. His parents refused to let him transition or cut his hair, and the other kids were less than supportive. Remus let him wear his clothes, though, and his friends all defended him when they could. And they all survived until high school.
Fast foreward to sophmore year. Logan was on the fast track to becoming valedictorian. The other kids, in addition to whispering, "Fag," and, "Tranny," at them all in the halls, taunted Logan for his intelligence. Remus and Janus got into fights often to protect the others. Patton and Emile tried to keep the group's moral up. Logan and Roman always took it all harder than the others, but they had one teacher, Mr. Sanders, who let them eat lunch in his classroom and used Roman's proper pronouns. He even congratulated Patton and Remus when they started dating. He'd always pair up Janus and Emile for group projects, just to watch them flirt.
Patton, Roman, and Remus's parents passed around a petition to get him fired the next year. It was successful. That was the year everything fell apart.
Roman and Logan couldn't handle the pressure that came with the grades and the bullying. They always said they were fine, but....
One day, Logan quit his job at the library. Said it just wasn't worth it anymore. Roman stopped eating and always brushed his friends off when they begged him to try.
They died the same night. June 4, Roman's birthday. Roman overdosed on antidepressants. Janus, Remus, Emile, and Patton read his note over and over again.
Dear Friends,
I want to start by saying this isn't your fault. Remus, you were the most amazing, supportive brother anyone could ask for. Patton, Janus, Emile, Logan, you are all wonderful and perfect, and you all deserve the world. But.... I can't do this anymore. I can't live in this body one more day or hear someone call me Rachel one more time. I just can't do it. I love you all so much. Please don't dwell on this for too long. I want you all to be happy, okay?
Mom, Dad, I'm sorry I couldn't be everything you wanted me to be. I wish I could have been as good a son as Remus was. I wish you could have loved me as much as he did.
And, Mr. Sanders, if you ever see this.... Thank you. For everything.
Adeiu, best of friends and best of men,
Roman
Logan hung himself. He didn't leave a note. His parents at least gave him a funeral. Roman's parents didn't care enough to even do that.
Luckily, Remus, Janus, Emile, and Patton had saved enough from their various jobs to have him cremated. Emile's parents insisted on helping out, which helped a lot.
The group burried Roman's urn just outside the cemetery where Logan rested. Luckily, his grave was at the edge of the gate so Roman's could be near his. Remus painted a large rock to use as a marker. They all stood by the small grave, Janus holding Emile and Patton and Remus squeezing each other's hands, until the sun rose.
Patton stayed with Remus after Janus and Emile left.
"I can't stay here anymore," Remus had whispered. "I can't stay with the people who killed my brother."
"I know," Patton whispered. "I hate our parents." He brushed back his bangs to show Remus a black eye and a bruised cheek. "If we save enough, we'll run away together," he promised. "We'll get Janus and Emile, and we'll all go to Massachusetts, and we'll get married." Remus nodded.
"I like that." He gently pulled Patton close, and they shared a long, sweet kiss.
Things didn't work out. Senior year was worse. Janus, Emile, Patton, and Remus were the gays who were friends with the two who killed themselves, and that's all anyone ever treated them as. Janus's parents took him and moved to Delaware. He and Emile stayed in touch for a few months before the lost contact. Janus and Patton still talked occasionally, though, even after high school. Emile, Patton, and Remus stuck together, but things would never be the same.
When senior year ended, Patton and Emile prepared to move to Massachusetts, but Remus wouldn't go.
"Please," Patton begged. "We found a cute apartment in Salem. We can start over. We can get jobs while Emile is at school. We can build our own lives. Please come with us." Remus shook his head.
"I can't," he said. "It's only been a year since they died. I just can't leave them yet." Patton hugged him tightly.
"Keep in touch," he asked. Remus nodded and pressed a kiss to his lips.
Over the next few years, Patton kept in touch with Remus. Every year, he said he would finally move in with him, and every year, he had an excuse not to. Eventually, they stopped talking as much, and when Patton changed his number, he forgot to tell Remus.
***
"He and Emile stayed together, though," Patton finished. "Patton became Emile's receptionist when he started practicing independently."
"What about Janus and Remus," Virgil asked.
"Janus is still in Delaware, and I guess Remus is with him." Virgil nodded. He wasn't an idiot. He knew Patton had just told him his life story. He just wasn't going to press any further than that. Maybe someday, Patton would tell him more, but it was almost the day his friends killed themselves. Patton needed time.
***
The next day, Patton went back to work. Larry and Dot were happy to see him. When their appointment was almost over, another patient entered the waiting room and walked up to Patton's desk. "Hey," he said, head tilted down. His voice was low and familiar.
"Hi! Do you have an appointment?"
"N-no. I just moved here and was hoping I could set one up."
"Okay.... Dr. Picani is with a patient right now, but-- Remus?" Remus was staring at Patton, a sad frown accepting his dull eyes. "L-like I was saying, Emile--"
"Why didn't you answer my texts?" Patton began to fiddle with a pen. "You could have just said you didn't want to see me. I get it. I probably remind you of Ro and Logan, and that's fine. I failed you and I put off moving even though I said I would, and I understand that you're mad, and it's okay. But--"
"I wanted to see you." Remus stared at Patton, who stared right back.
"What?"
"I wanted to see you, but I couldn't say it. It's just so close to Roman's birthday, and I didn't know what to do or what to tell my son--"
"You have a son?" Patton nodded, tears in his eyes.
"I adopted him five years ago. His name is Virgil. He's funny, he's dark, and strange and sarcastic, and I love him more than anything."
"Boyfriend or husband?"
"Single dad and rockin' it." Remus laughed despite the tears that were escaping his eyes. Patton laughed with him, also crying. "I'm sorry. For everything," he sobbed. Remus took his hand.
"Me too." And that's how Larry and Dot found them five minutes later.
Holding hands and crying, together again.
