#And Yang didn't know his semblance

Okay, I know some people might be mad at me, but I stand by this. Volumes seven and eight were the most horrible volumes to me. Many you would say because of Ironwood and how the heroes betrayed him. And I would say, “Yes. That is absolutely the reason.” However, that is not the only reason I hate those volumes, especially with nine.
Ren and Oscar:
Ren and Oscar were the MVP s of volumes seven and eight. In volume seven, Ren was concerned with lying to James and was more worried about the people's safety. He became the most emotional in the group and started acting somewhat critical to the point he lashed out at Nora, Yang, and Jaune. This causes Nora to become somewhat distant from him and Jaune to be a little disappointed, especially after mentioning he cheated Beacon. However, after a little talk with Jaune and yelling at Harriet, Ren semblance evolves to where he can read emotions.
Oscar, who was willing to trust James when Ruby, for reasons, didn’t. Who openly told James the truth about Salem, then gets shot for it. Then gets found by his friends and immediately gets taken by Salem’s forces. He then persuades Hazel to betray Salem and gets Emerald on the side of good.
Here’s the problem, Ren didn’t do anything. Like, he didn’t try to fill James in on anything. He stood by his friends and still carried out the lie. And then his evolution really was unnecessary and wasn’t well-earned. And many of you might say, “But he earned it by standing up to Harriet. And it helped them in some way.” Okay, but hears the thing. First off, Harriet was going to hurt Ren if Winter didn’t stop her. And second, his semblance wasn’t even that useful in finding Oscar.
Now Oscar, he just overstayed his welcome. He somehow persuaded Hazel to betray Salem… Even though he is the reincarnation of the man he hates. He gave away the information to Hazel, who was ordered to collect that intel by Salem, which Hazel got mad at Oscar about afterward. But what did he offer Hazel to make him switch sides, considering Ozpin still can’t kill her? Why offer the last question to him? He already knows everything.
And then Emerald, whom he met once and tried to kill Ruby in Heaven, Oscar managed to get her to join the hero side. Why? Why would the characters who not only met Emerald but were betrayed by her and Cinder be willing to trust her? Because Oscar says so? And what makes it worse is Ren agrees to it first because of his evolution. The reason it doesn’t make sense to me is because it’s coming from the wrong characters. Which brings me to my next problem.
Jaune and Nora:
Mainly, Jaune was my issue. However, we will talk about Nora first. Mainly on how the writers gave her the Jaune treatment. Nora was more concerned for the people of Mantle, while Ren was concerned for the entire world. This is due to Nora’s backstory where she was poor, parentless, and alone on the streets. Nora knew exactly how the people were feeling. So you would think out all the characters, she would most likely side with Robyn. Maybe even so far as to tell her what’s going on. But then it was Yang and Blake. Even though Yang was completely against lying to Ironwood and was calling Ruby out on it. (But hey, bumblebee matters.) Then what made Nora's coming out party even more hollow is she leaves Mantle to her teammates, while she goes back to Atlas with the majority of team RWBY, only to be knocked unconscious for half of volume eight. All while thinking about only Ren.
Jaune got it the worst though. Not just with the fact that he had to kill Penny even though he trained with his semblance and probably the most innocent and cool headed person on the group. But as I said before, a lot of Ren and Oscar's actions were pointless - no, didn't make sense because they fit Jaune’s character more.
Look, I said this before, but Jaune has no reasons to trust James. Not only because of Leon’s betrayal but Ozpin whose secrets came to light. Jaune had his trust broken two times. By Headmasters, no less. And you may say, “Ironwood gave Jaune and his friends their licensees early. And a place to stay.” True enough, however, Jaune knows Salem exists. James is trying to keep her a secret until Amity Arena is ready for launch. Who's to say he’s not giving them their licenses and a place to stay to keep an eye on them? (However, that’s not true. Considering Ironwood as we have seen has done nothing wrong to them.) That’s something for Jaune to consider. And even though he could feel sorry for the citizens of Mantle, that doesn’t mean he would fully trust Robyn either, due to her methods causing more harm than good. (The only reason anyone would side with Robyn is that she is a better choice than Jacque. Plus, why do we just see Yang argue about this? Why would Jaune agree to something that he almost hurt Oscar for?)
Basically, Jaune should have been the middle man from the start of volume seven, and in volume eight he brings everyone together. In volume seven, we could’ve had Jaune struggling due to having to help Atlas and Mantle as a huntsman while training to extend his aura, keeping his team together, and watching out for Tyrian, who said he had an interest in him (still don't know why.), and Salem. Jaune would’ve had a hard time, especially because his friends would have been making things worse, and he had to follow up on their actions. (More importantly, Jaune might as well learn to stand on his own two feet as huntsman and a leader. Otherwise, how is he important to the story?)
Then in volume eight, when Ren lashed out at him, Jaune would have had more to prove. Imagen Jaune negotiating with Winter on letting them go in to save Oscar. Offering the relic as leverage so they can find Penny, who mind you they were looking for. Rushing in, extending his aura, and going on his own to find Oscar while relying on his friends to do their part. Then having to fight and reason with Hazel to help him. Even to promise Hazel a future where no more people need to die due to Salem’s and Ozpin’s war, considering Jaune lost Pyrrha. Even maybe seeing Hazel ask Jaune to bring Emerald with him. Jaune learning to trust Emerald, despite everything she’s done because he may need her or sees her redeeming qualities. All this, though unintentionally, is to prove Ren wrong. That he’s capable of doing great things and making him a supposedly better leader than Ironwood. He’s based on Jeanne D'Arc, right? Who was the biggest turnaround in the war for France in 1429. A leader and influencer who managed to convince her allies to join her side. Despite being a woman and a peasant with no proof that angels told her to help in the war.
(Okay, look, many of you might say, “Jaune is not a good fighter” which I agree… but isn't a fight more like a debate using strength and knowledge. And we have seen Jaune fight just not with human opponents.Him fighting Hazel may determine how far he has come from when we met him. Also Jaune’s and Hazel's character a true opposite
Plus the whole point of Hazel’s character is him being a broken man with nothing left to lose. A man who lost all faith in humanity and the hunting world ever since his sister and possibly his whole family were slain by it. His faith slipped the moment he met Salem and found out she was immortal and cannot be killed, making his sister's untimely death even more worth less. However, Jaune is the opposite.
Jaune lost Pyrrha. He lost the very first friend and could've been lover to the hunting world. He was betrayed by others who he thought were  his allies. To make matters worse he too learns of Salem’s immortality. Yes, he was angered by this information. Furious. Almost enough that he would have done the same things Hazel was doing out of spite. But he didn't. He still fights the good fights.
Hazel is man who feels no pain. Sees an indifference between Ozpin and Oscar. Mainly because unlike Jaune he never hanged out with Oscar. So Jaune who was already worried for Oscar, especially after he got kidnapped would be the one to oppose and object Hazel for his actions. Believing that his actions will not only not bring his sister back… but mainly dishonor her. I'm just saying these two should have fought.)
But that’s it for volumes seven and eight. Look, I don't hate Ren and Oscar. However, as some of you complain about Jaune getting too much screen time or being a self insert but when Oscar does the same thing, no one talks about it and are ready to defend other characters and not call out their levels of screen time. Or how they don't fit into the situation. There were plenty of better things Jaune and Nora could have done beside kill or nap for the volumes. Instead, they’re pushed to the side until the writers need an escape goat to advance the plot.
(Also if you are wondering why I am just talking about team JNRO then I am going to be straight forward with you. TEAM JNRO CARRIED THE WHOLE ATLAS VOLUME. And mean main character wise..They save team RWBY. They were the main one probably keeping the people of Mantle and Atlas alive. Jaune killed Penny to save Winter. Basically unlike team RWBY, team JNRO were doing their FUCKING jobs. Hate me if you want to.)

Weiss: Wait, where's Team JNPR?
Ruby: Jaune said that he was gonna do his own superhero thing.
Blake: Really?
Yang: Mhm. But he didn't say who with.
Nora: Aw! I've never seen him so happy! (Sniffles) Nora need tissues... (Takes tissues) Thank you, Hulk.
---------------------------------------------------
Jaune: (Web-swing) THIS IS THE GREATEST DAY OF MY LIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIFE!
Hulk: Hammer girl welcome.
Ren: How long will that thread last?
Spider-Man: It was a spare cartridge, so it should last a few hours. You know, I do have another one if you'd like.
Oscar: Uh, n-no thanks. I'm, uh, not a big fan of heights.
Captain America: It's okay if you don't. There's no shame in being afraid.
Pyrrha: I never thought of it like that. I'm not sure my semblance works like that, though.
Magneto: Polarity and magnetism are not so different, as I'm sure you know. When you dedicate yourself to a cause you believe in, there is little that can stop you.
Pyrrha: Hm...

Roman: We'll kiddo, it's time to go.
Neo: 😞
Roman: I know-hey hero boy!
Jaune raises an eyebrow.
Roman: Thanks for letting me say goodbye to Neo.
Jaune nods to him, his semblance still active, keeping Roman soul still alive for the moment.
Roman just feels Neo hugs him tightly, and he hugs her back, and it is a quiet tender moment between the pair as Team RWBY look on.
Roman appearance starts to flicker, the sign that Jaune's semblance was reaching its end.
Roman looks at his partner once more.
Roman: You go fix yourself, and then when you do? I have one more thing to ask of you...
Neo looks at him, rubbing away a tear from her eye as Roman smirks and reaches at his hat...
Roman to Neo:
Tumblr media
Roman: Live. It would mean a lot to me.
Neo just looked at Roman and gave a nod.
Roman: Thank you
Suddenly, Roman's body began to shimmer and disperse.
Roman: Goodbye...Trivia.
Neo: 'Goodbye Roman'
With that, Roman was gone...
Jaune let out shaky breath and fell to one knee as Roman's soul finally moved on from this world.
RWBY: Jaune!
As they rushed toward him but was stopped when Neo stepped in front of him and offered her hand to him.
Jaune looked at it before grabbing it and lifted himself up.
Jaune: Well...I hope you got the closure you ne-oof!
He didn't get another word in as he felt Neo hig him tightly.
Jaune: Eh.
Neo quickly released the hug before stepping away from him .
Jaune: I won't ask what that was all for...I hope you get things sorted out with yourself.
Neo just nods before finally taking a bow and jumps off to ascend.
Weiss: Jaune, are you alright?
Jaune: I'm fine, Weiss, how about everyone else?
Yang: We're good here, VB.
Blake: Yes, everyone is okay.
Ruby: Jaune... how did you do that with Torchwick?
Jaune (sighs): It's a new addition to my semblance...
Yang: Woah, you can raise the dead?
Jaune: No, Yang, It's just me being able to project the spirit as long as their is enough Aura in this case me, a cherished item in this instance Torchwick's hat and a connection the bond Neo and Roman had, then I can briefly project that spirit to this world.
Ruby looked at Jaune, hopefully. If that were the case, then she could see Penny and her mom once more?
Yang: What do we do about Neo?
They looked up to see a newly formed branch that looked like Neo.
Ruby: She'll find herself, one way or another.

Oh god I can only imagine the chaos this would cause. I can see the girls having a group meeting as they discus that someone is trying to make jaune there partner.
Only to watch in horror as he accepts to go on a date with cinder.
Pyrrha: This needs to stop! This... Skank is trying to take my Jaune away!
Yang: Well, it's not like you are making any-
Pyrrha: *If looks could kill*
Yang: ... Nevermind.
Weiss: *massaging her temples* Pyrrha, even though i don't understand why you like Jaune so much, i do agree with what Yang tried to say: You are not showing him your emotions.
Pyrrha: *sighing* i know... But it's so hard! I never tried dating someone and Cinder as already given him chocolate. What will be next!?
Nora: Don't worry Pyrrha, knowing Jaune, he thought it was friendship chocolate or something.
Ren: *entering the room* ... Pyrrha, before you try murdering someone, let me use my semblance on you. *Place a hand on her shoulder* Cinder just asked Jaune for the dance.
Pyrrha: ........... AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!!!
Nora: *wincing* She is NOT taking this well.
___
Cinder: *Unnaturally shy* J-jaune? W-w-would you'd like to c-come to the d-d-dance with me?
Jaune: *smiling* Sure! I would love to! *Scratching the back of his head* I wanted to ask you out. You know, since you've been helping me a lot lately.
Cinder: *completely red* W-well, be sure to be presentable! I... I will have something for you, after the dance.
Jaune: *smiling even more* Alrighty then! I'll ask Coco if she can help me with a suit. I was planning something else if i didn't have a date but i guess that won't do, right?
Cinder: D-d-date... *Cough* Yeah, of course! I'm sure she will be of good help! A-anyway, i need to go! *Run to her room, her heart beating like crazy*
Jaune: *looking on the ground, seeing a letter with a little heart on it* uh... She forgot something. I'll give it to her next time we train.

MK Intros!: Arc-Noire Edition
(Credit to @rwby-encrusted-blog for the format)
Blake: So, you went to Signal, but Ruby and Yang don't know you?
Jaune: *Unsheathes Crocea Mors and deploys shield* Well, I kind of didn't go to Signal, or any combat school.
Blake: *Unsheathes Gambol Shroud* And they say I'm the impulsive one.
------
Yang: *Walks onstage, cracks knuckles* Ready for a little sparring, Rubes?
Ruby: *Twirls around Crescent Rose* If you pull my tail again, I'll show Blake some pictures of you with braces.
Yang: *Slams fists together, activates semblance* You said you deleted those!
------
Qrow: *Pulls Harbinger from behind his back* You sure about this, Willow?
Willow: *Takes a shaky stance* I'd like to feel like a huntress again, if only for a moment.
Qrow: Guess I'm not the only one stuck in the good ol' days.
------
Nicholas Arc: *Unsheathes Crocea Mors* You took my daughter from me.
Adam: *Puts on his mask and turns around* She was needed for the cause.
Nicholas: *Runs a finger across the blade* I'm going to mount your horns in my study.
------
Taiyang: *Walks onstage with Zwei* I'm not letting Ruby go to Signal Qrow. Don't try to talk me out of it.
Qrow: *Flies in, transforms* She's too much like her mother to sit around and not help, Tai.
Taiyang: I'm trying to save her from ending up like her mother.
------
Rusted Knight: *Petting Juniper* Summer Rose.
Summer: *Pulls down hood* I didn't expect The Rusted Knight to know my name.
Rusted Knight: Go home Summer, your family needs you.

RWBY Ship Parallels #1: Fear & Bravery
There are too many ship parallels to put them all in one meta, so I'll make individual posts as I remember them. The first one I want to tackle is how all the canon or hinted-at-being-canon ships all have pivotal moments where the themes of being afraid and/or having courage come up.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Some elaborations under the cut!
For starters, just for context to refer back to throughout the post, the definition of courage/bravery is as follows:
noun 1. the ability to do something that frightens one. 2. strength in the face of pain or grief.
I was initially going to list these chronologically, but we're going to do it on a ship by ship basis instead. First up:
Renora
The first incident for them happens all the way back in V4 during their backstory flashback. Ren underwent a small arc learning from his father that sometimes the worst action to take is not taking any action at all, even if it's scary. He then tries to support Nora by teaching her this same lesson: that they both need to be brave. She expresses vulnerability about how scared she is, Ren confesses to feeling the same, and together they decide to look after each other from that point on. Which makes everything just a bit less frightening.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We also revisit these same themes in their V8 confession. First we see Nora criticizing Ren for running away just because things got difficult:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And after Ren owns up to this cowardice, the things he did out of fear of failure, the conversation shifts. Nora admonishes herself, and Ren lists things off about her that he admires, the last of which - while not using the word itself - calls to how brave of a person she is and cites it as one of the main reasons why he loves her. Because as the definition above states, being strong and helping people without worrying about how much it might hurt you in turn is what it means to have courage.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
WhiteKnight
Their heart-to-heart in V9E9 says it all. Weiss has been carrying the weight of failing to save Atlas since it fell, and after Ruby's actions in the episodes prior, she became aware (a bit too late) of how those same failures were weighing on their leader. So when Jaune acknowledges the harm he caused from trying so desperately not to repeat their past mistakes, Weiss is the perfect person to step up for reassurance.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
She knows that their failures do not equate to their worth or all the good they're capable of doing. And reminding Jaune of this, calling him a brave and good person in spite of his failures, is what he needed to hear to be able to reach an acceptance he hadn't been able to achieve in all those years trapped alone in the Ever After.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Also the framing parallel of BB and WK both holding each other is a very nice touch.)
Bumbleby
With BB it's not just one or two moments. Blake and Yang's characters both centre around the themes of cowardice and bravery since their beginnings and we see it come up throughout the show a lot. Back in V2, Yang sees the bravery in Blake when she herself can only focus on the opposite:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Blake: When you figured out I was a faunus I didn't know what to do, so I ran. when I realized my oldest partner had become a monster, I ran! Even my semblance... I was born with ability to leave behind a shadow of myself. An empty copy that takes the hit while I run away.
In V4 and 5 we see Yang struggling to get back on her feet after losing her arm and the trauma she endured at Beacon. Blake tells Sun that she sees Yang as the "embodiment of strength" and we, the audience, get to see the proof of this every time she keeps fighting despite shaking, and especially when she faces off with Raven in the finale.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
These parallel arcs culminate with both of them facing off against Adam together, but most especially gets called back to in their mutual confession scene in V9:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Yang acknowledges what she saw in Blake all those years ago, that she doesn't give up on what matters to her, even when people hurt her, she still fights for what's important. While Blake acknowledges Yang's reliability, her strength, and her courage. And both of them, like Renora, cite these reasons as things they admire, and reasons why they love each other.
Now last, but certainly not least:
Rosegarden
One of the very first things Oscar says to Ozpin when he leaves the farm is that he's scared. This comes back time and time again, especially in the Atlas arc where Oscar spends so much of his time counselling Ironwood against letting his fear control him (a conflict Ruby is also a part of). Our little prince even has a theme song titled Fear to really drive it home.
Whereas Ruby has always been the poster child of "keep moving forward", no matter how much the trauma, stress, pressure, and grief weighs you down. You just have to be strong and keep pressing on, fighting the monster that took her mother away. No matter what.
So, much like BB, there are themes around bravery, fear, and perseverance that apply to both Ruby and Oscar's personal arcs. Both of them especially have focus on being brave despite fears of loss. With Oscar, it is fear of losing himself to the merge; whereas Ruby has a fear of losing those she loves.
All the way back in the infamous Dojo Scene is where we first see these themes addressed in their dynamic. It starts with Oscar expressing vulnerability to Ruby about how afraid he really is.
Tumblr media
Ruby initially tries her usual strategy; surface level reassurances about just pushing through it... but it doesn't work on him. So after some upset from Oscar, she ends up being vulnerable with him too. Something she hadn't done with anyone else in show by that point.
Tumblr media
Ruby admits that she's afraid too, not just for herself, but for the threat Salem poses to the world as they know it and the people within it. Ruby tells him about those she's lost and says that if it had been her instead, those friends would have kept fighting too. That vulnerability, which requires courage in and of itself, is what motivates and inspires Oscar to keep moving forward where Ruby's earlier attempt could not. The scene closes off with one more nod to these themes where Ruby pauses at the door and turns back with one final thought:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In both the above scene and the V4 finale, Ruby cites "fighting for those they've lost and those they haven't lost yet" as her main motive to keep fighting. Up until V8/9 she used this as her greatest source of strength, but that strength is a double edged sword which eventually became her greatest weakness when Neo used it against her. First trapping her in a room with all the people she "failed":
Tumblr media
And then landing a finishing blow with making her kill lose one of the people she loves most: Oscar.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ruby can be brave if it means she can protect the people she loves. But just as Penny's death dealt a very big hit to Ruby's hope, what little she had left was crushed at the thought of losing Oscar (and Little) too.
Aside from that, there has also always been an underlying mystery around what having silver eyes means for Ruby. In V4, she is hunted by Tyrian and in V8 she finds out what her fate would have been had he succeeded. A fate which very justifiably terrifies her and seems to be a theme that will carry on into the Vacuo arc. It is also something that was brought up in the second RWBY x JL movie, I talked about this a little bit in this meta, but I'll share it here as well. In the movie, Ruby opens up a bit about this fear saying the following:
Tumblr media
“Did you know I lost my mom when I was a kid? I don’t know exactly what happened to her, I don’t really remember her, I just have stories. And I keep trying to live up to those stories, but… I realize they don’t matter anymore. Heroes fall. And I just want to get as much done as I possibly can before I do.”
This scene directly parallels one of Oscar's back in V6:
Tumblr media
“I don’t know how much longer I’m going to be… me. But I did some thinking, and I do know that I want to do everything I can to help with whatever time I have left.”
Both of these scenes show their respective courage around fears related to their issues with identity. Oscar saying he will do whatever he can before he loses himself, and Ruby doing whatever she can before she loses her life as all heroes eventually will.
So to summarize: Renora, Whiteknight, Bumbleby, and Rosegarden all have a scene where one or both partners cite the other's bravery as something they admire or love about the other person. All of these ships also include at least one scene - but often more that just weren't listed here - where they open up and are vulnerable with each other about their fears and motivations. And lastly, with BB and RG especially, bravery and fear are central themes to both their relationship dynamics as well as their individual character arcs within those pairings, all of which narratively parallel each other extensively.
CRWBY is very consistent with how it writes its ships and this is only the tip of the iceberg of all the parallels we've seen between these partners so far. But that's all for now; thanks for reading!

Theodore: She can't stay in this academy
Jaune: Who?
Theodore: She
Theodore pointed to Neo
Jaune: Ask you
Everything in the room fell silent. Yang was the only one who started laughing.
Theodore: I must remind you that you are talking to the Headmaster of this academy
Jaune: So what do you have to say about her, dear Headmaster?
Jaune pointed to Raven.
( The epilogue of v9 was "released" but the episode wasn't even finished, it was still in the storyboarding process, I don't consider it an epilogue, it's just something to draw attention to itself )
Jaune: And her
Jaune pointed to Esmeralda.
Jaune: Let's not forget them
Jaune pointed out to the RWBY team that, in the eyes of the people of Atlas, they were responsible for the destruction of the kingdom.
Jaune: You know, you're a bit of a hypocrite, 7 criminals in your school and you still complain about my wife. And who came up with the idea of calling her
Jaune pointed at Raven without looking directly at her.
Oscar/Ozpin: I
Jaune: Why am I not surprised, your incompetence has no Ozma
Weiss: Jaune!
Jaune: Me lying? His incompetence knows no bounds, he was in charge of Beacon and Beacon fell, he had important information when we were in Atlas but he didn't open his damn mouth!
Jaune: We've lost the relic of creation, the relic of knowledge is useless, Vacuo has become the favorite destination for Grimms and we have 1 maiden who wants to kill us and 2 missing maidens
Jaune: So I ask if anyone, ANYONE! had a plan, so said
Jaune looked at everyone, he looked at team RWBY, Qrow, Winter, Marrow Amin leader of Ace Operatives, Coco leader of CFYV and other leaders of elite hunting teams.
Tumblr media
Vanitas Lunarblue.
Vanitas: So, boy, what are your plans?
Jaune: Wow, let's use the relic of destruction
This surprised everyone, and those who had just learned about the relics were shocked.
Vanitas: Let's see who will use the sword that can destroy the world
Jaune: Ren
Ren himself was shocked.
Ren: Why me
Jaune: You told me yourself that you've improved your Semblance, you told me yourself that you can suppress your emotions for hours now
Jaune: If you don't depend on your emotions then only reason will remain, and besides, I trust you. I know you well enough to know that you wouldn't let innocent people suffer
Ren was happy with his former leader's words.
Neo with his Semblance made a pile of papers appear on the table.
Jaune: I had some extra time and did a little study and now the Army of Atlas will serve as a line of defense and transport, they will enter combat unless it is strangely necessary, the focus will now be on protecting and better Vacuo
Jaune: About Nightmares Grimms. With only the VATC (Vatican) team, they are the only ones who can face these monsters and leaving only one is too risky, the CYFV team will help them in the battles
Jaune: Other teams like SSSN and others, I first need to know which areas they are good at.
Jaune turned his gaze to the RWBY team.
Jaune: Ruby, you'll be away from the battlefields and will work in weapons maintenance, your weapons creation and repair will be put to good use. Yang and Weiss both go to work as aides to the Atlas military. Blake, you and your Faunus features are going as vigilantes.
Blake: This is racism
Jaune: Blame God for creating the black night sky. Salem is going after the relics. We need to get in touch with Headmistress Glynda as soon as possible

The amount of times RWBY wants us to feel scared for the safety of characters while conveniently forgetting Aura exists is staggering. Neo attacks Ruby with the intent to kill but her Aura is still active. James almost shoots Marrow with the intent to kill but his Aura is still active. Watts hacks an Atlesian Knight to run towards Qrow, Robyn and the Ace Ops with the intent to explode but their Auras are still all active. Sure the attacks would hurt like hell but they're not gonna kill, why should I fear for their safety?
If we're being generous (I'm having a good night lol) I suppose we could read moments like James vs. Marrow as shocking not because it would be a one-shot death sentence, but because he's threatening - in general - to take Marrow down. Sort of the equivalent of an IRL person raising their fists. Is that an immediate threat to the person's life? No. Are you making it clear that you're willing to fight over this while also ambiguously leaving it open how far you're willing to take things? Yeah.
You're right though, too often RWBY relies on average action threats (a pistol, an explosion, etc.) to raise the stakes without taking into account that none of that should be very scary to our protagonists. Not until their aura breaks (and we have no sense of when that will happen, despite them all supposedly carrying Scrolls to tell them. Which I get because if RWBY introduced clear thresholds of when aura breaks they'd have to actually abide by that rule). I feel the same way about characters about to fall: Ruby hanging off the airship with Neo, Ruby hanging off the cliff while fighting Cordovin, Ruby and Oscar both going down in an airship. The very first technique we're shown is a landing strategy, so how is falling from a massive height - even while taking into account other factors like, say, snagging the farm boy who never went to Huntsmen school and might need to use you as a personal parachute - meant to be taken as a serious threat?
In this regard the void of Volume 8 is actually a GREAT idea. Suddenly your landing strategy doesn't mean a thing if you have nowhere to land. Suddenly a single hit can be a threat. Not because the hit itself would seriously hurt you, but because it might knock you off the edge. I actually love the concept of Yang falling at the start of that fight, RWBY just did such a horrific job of executing it that there's nothing left for me to enjoy. Why does Yang panic like that when, as established, a single hit from Neo is not going to kill Ruby, or even seriously hurt her? Why is she jumping in front of her sister at all when the entire POINT (supposedly) of her Volume 3+ arc was to learn fight smarter, rather than relying on emotional impulsivity? (I will seriously never be over how that moment is an exact repeat of Yang trying to save Blake and yet the show doesn't seem to realize that.) Why does only Blake have a reaction to Yang "dying"? Why didn't the whole team of talented fighters with various ranged weaponry/magic/speed make a serious attempt to catch her?
All of this isn't even taking into account how Yang, as someone who powers up via taking hits, should consistently be standing her ground like she did against the mech, knowing her aura will not only save her, but give her an advantage. She's the tank. If Yang had gotten in front of Ruby with a confident, calm expression that conveyed her understanding that Neo can't one-shot her aura like Adam once did, taking the hit both to spare Ruby's aura and power her semblance as a strategic decision (give her a smirk and a taunting line like, "Thanks for the boost" before knocking Neo back), then later falls some other way after her team tries and fails to save her... that would have been so much better imo.
Yang's lack of engagement with her semblance has been especially frustrating for me after her line about how Adam "cheats." If Yang thinks it sucks that she has to take a beating to gain an edge... show her actually taking a beating to gain an edge. You know, like the show once did. It would be so badass to watch Yang getting in the way of all the attacks against her team, toeing the line between safety and breaking her own aura, before finally EXPLODING with a massive attack she's been saving up for, making that sacrifice worth it.
(Also potentially devastating if she's taking those hits with turning the tide in mind... but then she falls before she can see her plan through.)

Yang: "Ugh, it's been so boring ever since team JNPR was sent on that mission several months ago."
Ruby: "Hey, on the bright side, since it was Ms. Goodwitch that went with them. Combat class has become a free time"
???: "It feels so good to be back. Those Grimm seemed endless"
???: "Yeah, if it hadn't been for fearless leader unlocking his semblance, then who knows how long it would have taken." A loud, boisterous voice called out. "And even better that he saved his and Ms. Goodwitch's baby."
???: "Thank you, Nora, for remidning me of that" RWBY figured that that was Pyrrha. Based on how tense the voice sounded. The three voices stopped right outside the door allowing for Yang and Ruby to listen in on the conversation.
Nora: "You know... You have no one but yourself to blame"
Ren: "Yeah, the two of us told you that if you didn't tell him soon"
Nora: "Then he'd find someone else."
Pyrrha: Let out a loud sigh. "You're right. I took too long to confess my feelings. And I lost him to our teacher of all people."
Pyrrha: Punches the wall hard enough for everything around her to rattle.
Blake: Bursts out of the bathroom and slams open the door. Pen and paper in hand, startling _NPR.
Blake: "What's this I hear about Jaune knocking up Ms. Goodwitch?"
Nora: "Oh, so apparently Jaune Jaune and Ms. Goodwitch had sex on Valentine's day." Nora had a huge grin on her face as Pyrrha crunched JNPR's door handle.
Nora: "From what they told me, they'd been secretly dating a few months before that." Nora starts to go into all that she knows
_____________________________________________________________
Glynda: Sits down with a groan, rubbing her extended belly as she does so.
Jaune: Comes in with some tea and quickly rushes over to help her.
Glynda: "Don't worry Jaune I had it" Gives Jaune a peck on the lips. "Though thank you anyway"
Jaune: "You shouldn't be moving yourself so much. We already had that close call with those Beringel Grimm." Pours Glynda some tea before giving it to her.
Jaune: "Ozpin himself even said that you are to take it easy." Sits down beside Glynda and wraps an arm beside her, pulling her in close. Kisses her cheek.
Glynda: "But I'm sure that I have so much paperwork backed up" Her voice had a slight whine to it as she sipped her tea. "And I'm 100% sure it's because Ozpin didn't do it."
Jaune: Moves his hand down and to her extended belly, intertwining his fingers with hers.
The two of them sat in silence, just enjoying each other's company. They didn't get much alone time during the mission. They wanted to make up for lost time. Glynda turned her head and gently pressed her lips against Jaune when there was a loud knock on the door.
Glynda: Lets out a groan as she struggles a little to get up from her position.
Jaune: Gently yet firmly keeps her seated as he gets up to open the door. To reveal Ozpin with a stack of papers.
Ozpin: "Ah hello Mr. Arc, if you would be so kind as to hand Glynda these papers, I'd be so grateful"

No, but RWBY vs Ace Ops will always be one of my favorite fights in the entire show, just because it shows how good RWBY are. Not because of skill, but because of how smart they were.
RWBY were sure of what they were doing, and what they wanted. The Ace Ops, on the other hand, were all over the place—leader's not even here, one doesn't even wanna fight, another one is trying to descalate the situation, and two are mad and too busy dealing with their own feelings to even think about working with their teammates instead of arguing—and that helped. Because RWBY used that for their advantage.
First things first, Ruby pisses Harriet off and leaves quickly, thus, taking Harriet away from the fight and preventing her from assisting the other Ace Ops. Since her semblance makes her super fast as well, she knows that she's probably going to be able to deal with Harriet better than the others.
However Ruby knows she is outmatched—Harriet is older and is a much more experienced fighter, so of course, she was kicking Ruby's ass—so her strategy isn't being outrunning or fighting Harriet head on: it's trying to tire her out.
During that fight, Harriet uses her semblance a lot more than Ruby does. Ruby merely runs a few times to dodge and takes a bunch of blows from her. She's not trying to actually fight, she's trying to resist until Harriet is exhausted. And it works: Harriet—whose Aura had recently broken while fighting a Megoliath, and it probably hadn't even fully regenerated before the fight started—overuses her semblance so much that at the end what takes her out is a just Weiss' ice wall, her Aura breaks and she's so tired she just passes out.
Blake and Yang take on Vine and Elm, and given their fighting styles and strengths, makes a lot of sense, just like the speedster vs speedster thing. There's also the contrast of both of those duos being supposedly partners.
At first, they are getting their asses kicked, too, when they're trying to do 1v1 or 2v2. However, the thing is that Vine and Elm weren't even working together. They were arguing and too busy to bother teaming up against them.
So, instead, Yang and Blake, seeing that and that they can't beat them individually, decide to go down the 2v1 route: take Vine out first and then take Elm out later, working together. And boy, does it work. Those two fell hard.
So, Ruby and Harriet, Yang and Blake against Elm and Vine. So, then Marrow and Weiss. My favorite.
Okay, so, Weiss uses her glyphs to make her fast enough so Marrow can't use his semblance on her. Then, she uses her own individual Freezerburn move (nice) to create mist and give her enough time to use her semblance properly—showing how much she'd learnt since her fight with Vernal—and summons her Arma Gigas. Turning this into a 2v1.
Weiss makes sure the Arma Gigas is away from her, because she knows Marrow's semblance only works on one direction. Thus, when he uses it on her, the Arma Gigas attacks him, and when he uses it on the Arma Gigas, Weiss is free and attacks him instead. So, his semblance is useless in this fight, and the poor guy—who, again, didn't even wanna fight; he even defects and joins the kids side like two days later—ends up losing badly.
Leaving Marrow with Weiss is, in my opinion, the most stupid thing the Ace Ops do in this fight, because why would you leave the guy with the most OP semblance that could have worked against any of the other three—and would have taken them out quickly—with the only RWBY member that can contrarrest said semblance with hers. Like, dude.
What you can see during the entire time is that the Ace Ops were working separately, and that's what RWBY wanted: they saw they were disagreeing with each other, they made sure they were away from each other, separated. while RWBY were working together the whole time—even Weiss and Ruby, who assisted each other in their fights. Meanwhile, the Ace Ops were just divided.
RWBY are younger and less experienced. They're not better fighters than the Ace Ops. But they're a better team. That's what makes the biggest difference.

hi, I was the anon who asked this: [Which led me thinking, Yang has a lot of parallels with the villains, notably, Adam, Cinder, and Salem. What do you think is the ideal route of Yang during volume 4?] I probably didn't phrase that right. Uh, I was a bit dissatisfied with Yang's arc at volume 4. I know it wasn't supposed to be comfortable since it shows Tai's and Yang's traumas but it wasn't the good kind of bad. I guess I wanted more things to be added to Yang's arc in volume 4 or for some things to be slightly adjusted. Like in the DC comics, there was a character named Madame Mallari who helped Yang, she's an old lady who's a doctor and has prosthetic legs. It got me thinking that if she really was supposed to be part of canon then why show it late? If there are other people who can give Yang support then why didn't they show it at Vol 4? What if something bad happened to Yang while Tai was at Signal (it is to my belief that Signal was still operational since it was located in Patch)?
I am just uncomfortable with it especially when the show frames that it's somehow Yang's fault for rushing at Adam when there is no either choice left. I admit that it may be quite unreasonable for me to think like that. Anyways, sorry for the rant.
Uh, did you know that magical artifacts in RWBY existed? It was established in one of the games. Apparently, one of the artifacts was capable of controlling some Grimm and it was wielded by one of Salem's agent in Mistral. It got me thinking that since magic is hereditary, does that mean one of the Schnee's ancestor got an artifact and somehow made their semblances hereditary and the same throughout the generations?
this is an older post, but i still stand by it.
i don’t disagree with (most) of your take on her v4 arc: i don’t think the narrative framing is at all that it’s yang’s fault she got hurt, and i also (as outlined in the linked post) don’t think we’re intended to agree with tai’s assessment of what he saw in yang during the vytal tournament fights, which is what he bases his advice on because that’s the only thing he saw, but yang’s isolation and the dearth of support she receives during this very vulnerable time in her life are indeed uncomfortable. my feeling though is that discomfort is a feature, not a bug.
like, in V2, yang recounts one of her childhood memories to blake that involved her waiting for tai to leave the house before she put her three- or four-year-old baby sister in a wagon and left to wander through the woods for hours before anyone found them. yang would have been five or six years old. so we know that tai often left the girls at home alone when they were very young. probably he was leaving to go to work, a predictable circumstance with a regular schedule, so why didn’t he arrange childcare during the day? why didn’t they go to a neighbor’s house or a daycare or preschool? why didn’t he hire a babysitter? why leave two very small children at home alone in a cabin in the middle of grimm-infested woods?
there’s a through line between tai’s neglect of the girls back then and the way he treats yang in V4. and in V4, it is abundantly clear that yang does not feel comfortable enough with her dad to show him emotional vulnerability or rely on him for… anything except combat training, really; the only time yang really opens up in V4 is with oobleck and port, who (unlike tai) ask her how she’s feeling and validate her feelings and are also visibly horrified by the really harsh way tai talks to his daughter.
i haven’t read the DC comics and my understanding is they’re not canon? but based on yang’s anecdote in V2 and what tai does in V4, i think the answer to “if yang was supposed to have more support, why didn’t it happen in V4?” is probably that she wasn’t; and the answer to “why didn’t she get more support” is that tai is neglectful and also displaces how he feels about raven onto yang to a harmful degree. yang feels like he expects her to just pop on the prosthetic arm he surprised her with and magically be okay overnight because that is… how tai acts.
in a lot of ways it’s akin to what weiss goes through in V4—tai is not nearly as bad as jacques, but he is neglectful and his ‘tough love’ does hurt yang’s feelings and his singular focus on only her physical recovery does lasting emotional harm that she’s only now, in V9, beginning to confront. and in V5, weiss gets yang to open up with her by telling yang about her dad abusing her family and watching her mom disappear into an alcoholic shell of herself, which makes yang feel understood.
because weiss’ home life isn’t exactly the same but it resonates with yang; she and ruby grew up taking care of qrow when he was blackout drunk and their dad wasn’t around and didn’t make arrangements for them to be taken care of while he was working. and weiss—who is very empathetic and emotionally insightful, see also her clear and accurate understanding of why blake left—has picked up on enough hints, read enough between the lines of what little yang and ruby said about their dad at beacon, to have known this story would resonate.
like a big part the reason i like yang’s V4 arc is it explores the many ways tai fails her in a way that feels cogent with what we learned about him in V2. it shows both the acute trauma of having lost her arm but also the much subtler and more complicated scars of having been neglected and parentified by her dad throughout her life.
anyways!
i have watched the grimm campaign, yeah. the magical artifacts are interesting on the grounds that they rely on aura to activate them, same as dust, which imo supports my theory that aura is magic, just rising from the human soul rather than reliant on the gods, and that ancient humans did not have aura because it was suppressed or bound by the divine blessings.
i’m also inclined to think that there’s always or at least often a hereditary element to semblances, because they’re informed by a person’s nature and identity and those things are influenced by your family; the directly hereditary and also exceptionally versatile schnee semblance is i think probably the result of a really strong identification with the family and a belief in the hereditary semblance, with the versatility coming from individual variations getting passed down generation to generation. one schnee had a speed semblance, another could summon constructs of fallen foes, but it looked superficially similar so the schnees have always believed these diverse abilities to be the same semblance and taught each other how to do everything. belief makes it so. i think semblances are a lot more malleable than anyone gives them credit for, in or out of universe.

Spider-Knight 11: Identity theft
Team R_BY and team JNPR were sitting in the break room having breakfast until they noticed Weiss entering the room with an angry expression on her face. She was holding a newspaper and placed it against the table with force.
Weiss: This news is completely false! These photos are definitely montages or something!!
Yang: Wow calm down ice queen, You seem angrier than usual why don't you tell us what made you so angry.
Weiss sighed and sat down with her friends and picked up the newspaper and read to them ''Spider Knight is seen robbing banks and ATMs in the city of Vale, Could the knight be showing his true intentions?''
Nora: Impossible, why would Spider Knight do something like that? He's not that kind of person!
Blake :Yeah, Nora got a point but maybe he is a hero and then he steals in secret and these photos were taken while he was stealing on the sly.
Weiss sighed and slapped her hands against the table and spoke slightly blushing but with a determined expression on her face. Which would draw the attention of both teams to her.
Weiss: You may have made some points but I've seen up close how the spider knight acts and he's not a dirty thief and I won't believe what the newspaper is doing!
Weiss would leave the room with a few quick steps and throw the newspaper in the trash, Yang would let out a few low laughs at seeing Weiss stressed, The scene would cut to a warehouse where Roman Emerald and ''Spider Knight'' would be sitting counting the money he had stolen from the banks and ATMs.
Roman: Look, I never thought that pretending to be a hero would make us money so easily!
Spider Knight: ''Well, when you have good planning you can achieve everything.''
''Spider knight'' took off his mask showing that he was neopolitan which deactivated hers semblance showing that hers was wearing hers normal clothes but on her neck has a voice modulator and on her hands have fake web shooters and gloves that stick to the walls.
Emerald: Well, you can continue celebrating, but our work isn't finished yet.
Emerald said that while sitting on top of a crate and took a notebook and typed on it, Roman noticed and approached looking at what were plans and escape routes for a party that would take place on a boat to introduce new defense products to vale.
Roman: Look, I know that you and your little friend Cindy came to the city to make Ozpin's life hell, but where do neo and I get into this? Where does our payment come into your plan?
Emerald sighed and rolled her eyes, showing neo and roman the list of guests who will be at the event.
Emerald: At this event there will only be important members so while I can steal the technology you two can steal jewelry or money that the guests have.
Roman and Neo look at each other and then look at Emerald with a malicious smile. Time would pass and Spider Knight would be swinging around the city to think about things and what was written in the newspaper.
Spider Knight(Mind): I never thought I would be looking for myself, I even thought about calling nora to help me in this case, but I didn't want to risk this situation getting any worse…
Spider knight was swinging until he heard someone whistling and he would look to his right seeing Blaze cat sitting on top of a gargoyle with a smile on her face and then he would swing towards her and sit next to Blaze.
Blaze cat: Hi crime spider, I was hoping we would see each other on this beautiful night~
Spider Knight: Look, I'm innocent, I have no connection with that impostor.
Blaze cat: I know silly, You're too innocent to want to rob a bank, But you know if you follow me maybe I can show you something not so innocent~
Blaze cat would jump from the gargoyle that was on top and use its ropes to jump from building to building and spider knight would follow her until they both stopped in a building that had a view of the port where the party was having on the boat.
Spider Knight: Ok, you took me to see a boat that has a lot of fancy people… Ok, I understand what you're saying..
Blaze cat: Well, I brought you here to help you regain your image as a city hero.
The two jumped out of the building and walked towards the port casually and leaned against the wall of the boat as it left. The two managed to get on the boat and look at the boat's visitors to see any suspicious action. Inside the party room that was inside the boat, there would be a speech and presenting a model of super strength gauntlet until the lights went out and ''spider knight'' appeared on the ceiling making the lights come on.
Spider Knight: ''Look what a surprise guys, your friend from the neighborhood spider knight came to visit you but now you can give me whatever jewelry and money you have if you don't want to suffer a lot of pain.''
Roman, who was in a hallway disguised as a waiter, told Neo on the radio that 3 guards were coming after her. She would listen and throw a strong web-shaped rope, trapping them against the wall.
Spider Knight: ''My insect senses can make me perceive everything so don't even try anything. Now put everything precious in the bag!''
The scared guests would take off their jewelry and money and place them in web-shaped bags that would be on the floor. When the bags were full they would be hit by white webs. The guests and ''spider knight'' looked in the direction they came from and saw the real spider knight.
Spider Knight: ''Look, the impostor is here, did you come here to play the hero just in case?''
Spider Knight: I came here to show people who the real Spider Knight is.
The two spiders are fighting and while that time Roman would take the gauntlets but Blaze cat noticed and started fighting against him and made him faint but he would make a malicious smile and take the gauntlets going to where Emerald was and handing them over, The guards would find Roman passed out and arrested him. The fight would continue until Jaune would use the tentacles of his costume to hold back ''Spider Knight'' and take off his mask showing that he was Neo.
Spider Knight: Do you have any other comments to tell me about imposter?
Neo would listen to what Spider Knight was saying and blow him a kiss and then dismiss herself as if sheNeo listened to what Spider Knight was saying and blew him a kiss and then disappeared as if she were breaking glass. It would be confusing, but after a while he was at the port with the other guests and until Yuri approached him.
Yuri Watanabe: It's good to know that you're not a real criminal, and we're going to investigate what Roman has to do with this whole operation.
Spider Knight: I'm glad I could help and find the culprit.
Yuri Watanabe: I wanted to know if you have any suspicions as to who may have stolen the grimm that was being studied.
Jaune was about to speak but then he stopped and thought as if he were someone telling him ''You can't say that you're with the grimm he's helping you, he's making you stronger''
Spider Knight: I have no idea but I hope I can help in the future with this case.
Some police officers caught the attention of Yuri and Spider Knight who would go to the police truck and see that Roman wasn't there, just a police officer in his underwear.

Okay, how about another funny/sad one-shot? (Blame VOL. 9 for my muse swings)
One where Jaune’s semblance isn’t about healing/amping people with aura, but that he can only numb and take away their pain?
Of course it starts off all silly with Nora “pimping” Jaune out as a walking Icy-Hot Patch and raking in cash, but then things slowly get serious.
Students haggling/bribing Jaune for a quick & easy fix to deal with their depression, despite how uncomfortable it makes him. Professional hunters looking for Jaune after their missions go wrong because he can keep their friends stabilized.
And worst of all...the children’s hospitals.
Because Jaune KNOWS why the staff – why so many parents – NEED him there…
And so he does.
Because children, especially DYING children, shouldn’t have to suffer if Jaune can help it…
And when things get too hard, too REAL, for Jaune to continue?
Teams JNPR & RWBY are waiting right there willing to pick up the pieces that Jaune’s too weak to carry.
FEELS SO NUMB
"Jaune's home~!"
Jaune trudged into his room after a long day at his part-time job. Nora excitedly skipped next to him as he put his backpack down. She smiled at him. He couldn't muster the strength to smile back. He made his way into the bathroom, not even saying hello to his team.
"So... how much money do you think he made?"
"Nora." Ren chided.
"What? I'm just curious how my plan turned out."
"You mean how you were selling Jaune off as a local anesthetic to the highest bidder?" Pyrrha said, glaring from her desk.
"Hey, it's not my fault his semblance is literally a painkiller!" She put a finger to her chin. "Kinda surprised we didn't notice sooner, since he was always getting back up from Cardin's beating after he unlocked it."
"Well, I'm more surprised how you found him work outside the school." Ren said. "And with the approval of Professor Ozpin too."
"Well, I'm a bit of a businesswoman, Renny," she winked, "you knew that~!"
A knock came at the door. Ren opened it to find Ruby standing with a scowl on her face. "Is Jaune here?"
"He's in the bathroom." Ren answered. "Is there something we can help you with?"
"Yang and Weiss are fighting, and we were hoping he could-"
"It doesn't work that way, and you know it." Pyrrha said in a near snarl.
"S-Sorry, but Blake and I don't know what to do!" She rubbed her arm. "It's like ever since Jaune's been... uh, helping out, everyone at school has been acting really, really angry. It's like unless Jaune uses his semblance, people can't act normally around here anymore."
"Well, he's busy cleaning off from his super important job today!" Nora said with a beaming smile. "And they paid a mint, too!"
"Really?" Ruby asked. "Was it Uncle Qrow again?"
"Nah, he already came by yesterday. Today he was working at Vale General!"
"The hospital?" Ren asked. "What would they need him for?"
"Something about feet or another." Nora shrugged. "Like, something about pedal tricks."
The room was dead silent, save for the sounds of the shower in the bathroom. There was a soft thumping inside, too, but that subsided to silence once more after a few seconds. Suddenly, the room seemed to bend and wave and creak. Pyrrha stood from her desk.
"Pediatrics?" She asked.
"Yeah, that's it!" Nora shouted. "It was kinda weird sounding, but after they said it was for kids and cars in jeans, I kinda just went with it. Must have been mental hospital, righ-"
"JAUNE! JAUNE, OPEN THIS DOOR!" Pyrrha screamed as she smashed her fist against the door, Ruby running up to join her. The smaller of the two tried jiggle the door handle to open.
"Nora..." Ren gulped. "Do you know what carcinogenesis means?"
"...No, but that sounds like what the hospital people wanted Jaune for."
Ren took a deep breath, then told her. Pyrrha and Ruby were shoved out of the way, and the bathroom door came crashing down. Jaune was curled under the running water, softly sobbing. On the shower wall, a red smear stained the tiles. They pulled him out of the water, wrapping him in a towel, but he didn't respond to any of it. He just continued to sob and rub himself in a sort of self-hug.
"They'll be okay. They'll be okay. They'll be okay."

Some Christmas Ironqrow headcanons for you!
1. I always headcanon that Ironwood's relationship with his parents was rocky at best and he was an only child, so I feel like he didn't really celebrate Christmas before he and Qrow started getting closer, he'd always just work through it because why not. Meanwhile ever since Qrow went to Beacon, Summer and Tai had introduced Qrow (and Raven) to Christmas, and he loved it and always tried to make sure to be home for Christmas while Yang and Ruby grew up. So I think it'd be important for Qrow to bring Ironwood into his Christmas traditions. 2. I think that the Rose-Xiao Long-Branwen household always wear Christmas sweaters and do stockings and unwrapping presents under the tree, and Qrow wouldn't want Ironwood to be excluded from it and would buy James a sweater and presents and a stocking and try to fill it with sweets. And James would be so touched and love the sweater so much he'd wear it around the house all the time whether or not it's Christmas. 3. I headcanon that James is just a really good cook, and he'd be so grateful to Qrow and his family for involving him in their family Christmas that he'd want to do something for them too and decides to make Christmas cocoa without realizing that Qrow and Ruby both love chocolate. So then they'd be really happy about the cocoa and James would be all proud of himself. 4. Because of Qrow's semblance, I feel like every single Christmas there's usually some kind of disaster, like the tree catching on fire or a Christmas present getting broken or something. But when James is there, he just kind of notices things that might go wrong and casually fixes them. And he realizes Qrow is anxious about 'ruining Christmas,' and assures him that if anything does happen, it can be fixed. And so Qrow actually relaxes for once and stops worrying. 5. Yang and Ruby definitely try to get the two of them under the mistletoe together. XD Qrow tries to avoid it because he doesn't want to make James uncomfortable, but near the end of the day, they do wind up under it all alone and James kisses him on the cheek and Qrow thinks it's the sweetest thing. 6. The two of them would definitely curl up by the fireplace listening to Christmas carols while James read some book Qrow had gotten him for Christmas, and Qrow would fall asleep on his shoulder. 7. James would want to involve Penny in the traditions the next year and Ruby would be super down for that, and I feel like Ruby would try to get them all to snowball fight with her with Penny on her team. Tai and Yang would team up, and Ironwood and Qrow would team up, and they'd have like an all out (good natured) war with it. XD But James would let Ruby and Penny win. XD
So yeah, those are just some thoughts about Ironqrow Christmas I have. XD
Oh my gosh I love these all so much and they line up with a lot of my headcannons!!!!
I also headcannon James and his parents did not get along and so the holidays for him are really rough until he meets Qrow and he finds joy in the holidays again.
I just love the idea of Qrows semblance acting up more when he’s super nervous but when he’s calm he can control it better and love the idea of James helps him stay calm and relax so his semblance doesn’t act out as much.
Ohh I love the mistletoe thing especially if they haven’t gotten together yet and they’re trying to help them get together! Even better if James sneaks a kiss on the cheek when no one is looking.
I know this isn’t necessarily that kind of Au but give me papa James to Penny any day and I’ll eat it up lolZ XD. Penny would excitedly drag James into the fight and he’d surprisingly get really into it. He and Qrow would get into a heated fight and have a blast with it.
And then after a long and cold day in the snow they’d curl up by the fire and get just a little too cozy and both fall asleep on the sofa and comfy and cozy.
I love them all so much for these thank you for that. I know you know but this Christmas season has been really rough and weighing me down so these headcannons where so nice to see I’ve really needed a pick me up.

The other thing with the bird transformation is that Ozpin didn't mention it. Despite Raven's crew being believed to have the Spring Maiden - the fact that Raven is able to turn into a literal raven is rather important in combination to her being able to portal around and spy on people. You know like she used to do for Oz. And given that Raven is shown visiting Yang as a bird on screen in Volume 3 I believe incredibly relevant when she's already on alert to Oz and Co coming for Spring.
what makes it especially interesting is that raven knew qrow and ozpin wouldn't talk about it, meaning yang and weiss would catch them still keeping secrets even when they're divulging other information re: the secret war.
so what exactly makes turning into a bird so secretive? sure, they're spies, but tai and likely summer too knew about it, salem—their number one enemy—knows, so really, they're just keeping it a secret from their allies.
they even make a point of qrow avoid talking about it: in 4.8 ruby asks him if there's anything else he wants to tell them, to which he replies "not tonight" after taking a look at raven who arrives as a bird at the perfect time. and this is after he has already told them about the gods, salem, the maidens, and the relics + his own semblance. all of that is up for sharing, but turning into a bird isn't?
it's a perfect set-up for something to be off about this whole thing—namely how those powers came to be in the first place, since the first humanity was never shown the ability to shapeshift, only the gods did. so were the powers really from ozpin, or did he use something else to give them?
"still, who knows what he may have hidden from us over the years."
what really is the source of shapeshifting, and why is it important to hide?

I'm thinking about ruby and yang so much, the parallels,, the way they grew up affected them in SO MANY WAYS 🫠🫠🫠
Like I just think about v5 Yang "and i had to pick up the pieces" and Ruby "expect to pick people up" AND I JUST DIE
Like we know for a fact that Yang just started bottling everything up when Summer died and had to take care of ruby herself while their dad was completely depressed (and let's be real, Qrow was probably to scared to stay with them too long bc of his semblance, GOD THIS FAMILY CAN STORE SO MUCH TRAUMA, IT'S JUST OOZING EVERYWHERE)
So OF FUCKIN COURSE ruby, who grew up with yang as a role model/parental figure, absorbed ALL OF HER BAD COPING MECHANISMS, how many times do we think both of them had to put a smiling mask for their father or each over, just so they wouldn't worry anyone more than they already do ????
I think what started to tip the balance for ruby, was when yang stopped wearing the mask at the end of v3. Like blake leaving, the fall of beacon, losing an arm, ruby being out, yang just collapsed AND SHE WAS A PILLER FOR RUBY. I definitely believe that they thought they could mutually support the shaky foundation of their mental state if they kept making each other believe that they were alright
SO in that moment when yang says she doesn't know if she's gonna be alright and "bad things just happens", ruby felt like SHE had to do double the work for herself and for yang
And like it's so telling that when yang goes to find ruby at the end of v4, she isn't ok either but still decides to put the mask back on, LIKE THE WAY THEY KEEP HIDING THEIR FEELINGS AND PUSH ON, THE XIAO LONG-ROSE SIBLINGS ARE SO BAD AT TAKING CARE OF THEMSELVES, YOU TWO ARE THE SAME !!! YOU KEEP ECHOING EACH OTHER BC YOU DON'T KNOW HOW ELSE IT WOULD WORK, they can't allow themselves to falter or else everything will just collapse 🫠🫠🫠
But the damage was already done,, yang clearly wasn't hiding it as well as before and ruby just kept the same level of responsibility, bc she can't lose yang again (both of them have so many issues and trauma about losing people,,,, it hurts so bad)
I feel like the only time she started to relax was in v7, yang was CLEARLY better with blake AND penny was back, the world might be shit but every one that matter is here and okay
(And I believe that penny was probably one of the most important person in her life, whatever it was that was going between those two (they certainly felt like aro/ace spec soulmates))
Now if we think about it, between the end v7 and the last episode, it's been 3 days of v8, and maximum 3 days of v9.
6. FUCKING. DAYS.
And she lost penny again. Yang didn't lose blake again. That doesn't seem fair. Why bad things keep happening to her. Everything is falling apart, weiss also seems very down, every time she tries to talk she gets cut off, and every attempt of wby to reach out also gets cut off or rejected by ruby bc she just can't brake. (Every one broke around her at least once, so if she does it, who will put them back on track ??? HAHA,,, TT-TT)
And to be fair, i don't think that blake and yang would have been together that soon if it wasn't for the storm. Like obviously it was about time, but they also kinda had to do it to get out, but ruby doesn't know that. In her mind it's must have felt like out of place, they get to be happy and carefree, while she's struggling so hard, can't they see that everything, every hope is burning down
It's really telling of how yang started to have better coping mechanisms and having things for herself (like talking about about her feelings etc) and ruby hasnt, bc everytime she tries there's just a new thing hitting her in the face, penny's death for example, (CRYING IN THE CLUB RN)
Ruby needs to talk and voice her feelings, with people (I believe in you little dude ✊️😔, look at how yang keeps getting better even if it's not linear !! You can start to break the generational trauma too !! Wby will always be there for you as long as they're alive, bc they love you and you are enough, you don't need to be strong all the time 🥺🥺, just be you !!!!
Anyways sorry for the long ask,, I just have so many thoughts about them
ahdjkshfjksdhfjkHJKJFDSHFJDKH I've been sitting on this ask for a while bc 1/ I loved going back to it every day to see someone lose their entire mind in my askbox in real time, 2/ I wanted to gear up to give you a proper response although honestly my first reflex would have been this:
Tumblr media
do have a few pointers here though:
ruby's coping mechanism isn't one she got from yang per se, more like both of theirs developed alongside each other (yang had to step up and be the caregiver who hides her vulnerability behind humor; ruby chose to be the kid that's easy to cheer up! that's positive! that can kick back from anything! bc then it's also easier on yang)
what started tipping the balance for ruby is less yang's reaction to the fall of beacon and more the fall of beacon itself. Of course, having Yang put up a wall and freeze afterwards hurt her a LOT, but we need to remember that the fall of beacon itself was a deeply traumatic moment for everyone involved but especially ruby who witnessed BOTH penny and pyrrha's deaths. ruby's coping mechanism has always been to bottle things up and move, stay moving stay fighting jump to the next thing, it's not a coincidence her semblance is about scattering at high speed from place to place bc she's always tried to outrun her trauma. when her team falls apart and isn't available for moving she goes with rnjr bc for her it's still a better alternative than actually dealing with that trauma (plus she's fueled by both grief and survivor's guilt that prompt her to action)
yang's trauma is different than ruby which is why we saw her moving forward in v4-v5-v6 her trauma is rooted in abandonment issues and feeling that she's never gonna be enough so while their coping mechanisms mirror each other bc of how they had to work around each other they're not quite on the same trajectory
I think ruby suspects that the ever after trapped blake and yang specifically bc they had things to work out (and jaune makes a pointed remark about that that they all must have gotten) but you're a 100% right that seeing the bees together while she's still reeling from the fall of atlas and losing penny a second time, especially in these latest episodes where she's also confronted with what her purpose should be and Herb had nitpicked at her identity leaving her even more lost and sad and depressed, must feel so jarring bc how can they do it. why are they able to bounce back and it feels like she's been drowning the whole time. and going after blake especially is so vicious but also rooted in that feeling of inadequacy - why is blake stepping up as a second leader so naturally and so easily when she feels irreversibly broken, all these qualities blake has shown in v9 being those they had in common/blake admired in her/ruby cannot find it in herself to showcase them rn.
you're right that the bees have grown!! and have better communication skills and mechanisms to bounce back from a traumatic event!! but i'm gonna say the parallel here isn't between ruby and yang, it's between ruby and blake. See the reason why we see blake hit the ground running in the ever after and be able to carry everyone through is bc she's done it all before. She was an idealist much like ruby, she got her whole framework for approaching reality shattered and was utterly disillusioned, and when it shattered at beacon again she decided to shoulder the burden and consequences on her own. her whole v4-v5 arc is about realizing she cannot do things on her own!! and it's with this new mindset that she can lead in the ever after, and it's this realization ruby needs to come to. and you're right!! ruby needs to let her teammates in (the same way blake let sun and ilia and her parents back and asked for their support and all of menagerie's help!!)
you are so right about passed down trauma for ruby bc the whole time she's been emulating herself after an idealized version of summer who herself has been whittling herself down having to stay on that pedestal. ruby needs to break the cycle!!! no more solitary heroes no more living people that get entombed alive in a savior role!! she has to accept her limitations and let her team see the humanity and fallibility of her
anyway I'm glad you're on a downward spiral with us here buddy don't hesitate on having more breakdowns in my inbox we are All Not Good rn let's take rwbyprofen together 🤝
