As Sweet As Honey - Chapter 7
Sy's truck crunched over the gravel of his driveway as he pulled into the covered parking spot at the side of his cabin. As he shut the engine off you could hear Akia barking when she recognised the sound of the engine, Sy gently patting your leg;
"She's going to be so excited to see you"
He smiled, but you could see the concern in his eyes. Back at your cottage Tamara had arrived in a tornado of hugs and reassurances, but it'd done little to calm your nerves over the fact your abuser had not only finished his parole and was allowed to leave the state, was hundreds of miles off route for what he said his destination was, and you knew how he'd always insisted on taking the most direct route anywhere he went, even if it meant dangerous roads in bad weather.
The first few spots of rain started to hit the ground and you felt Sy squeeze your thigh;
"As much as i'd like to see that pretty little dress of yours go see through in the rain lets not hang around, once Akia gets wet she stinks the cabin out with wet mutt scent"
Smiling you hopped out, Sy grabbing the bag you'd hastily packed with some clothes and your laptop, the pair of you running quickly to the front door, Sy darting out to the yard to release Akia from her leash before the pair of them ran back under the cover of the porch. The big dog was all wriggles when she saw you, a now familiar face in her life. You petted her and gave her fuss as Sy moved around his cabin, switching lamps on and getting you settled in. He lifted your bag and pointed hooked his thumb to his bedroom;
“I’m gonna put this in here, i’ve cleared a drawer for you to keep your stuff in”
You could feel a lump form in your throat at his gesture, the casual thoughtfulness something you weren't used to in a relationship.
Once he'd dropped your bag he pulled you into his arms, enveloping you in his strength and warmth. You felt like the worries of the world slipped away whilst you were in that cocoon of his arms, that the big wide world was just a bad dream. He pressed a kiss to the top of your head and pulled back, waiting for you to meet his gaze;
"Dinner and a movie? Or dinner and talk?"
"Dinner and talk"
-
Your meal had been quick and easy, but no less delicious. Sy had made garlic bread from a loaf he'd baked that morning, combined with what Antonio had gifted him from the restaurant; fresh burrata cheese which had been drizzled with delicate honey and sprinkled with chopped pistachio nuts.
With the dishes cleaned away the two of you had curled up together on the couch, your time to explain your past had finally arrived;
"We met in college, James was a Senior when I was a Freshman. I didn't have that much experience with boys so I was flattered that he was interested… turns out he wanted someone he could control. We got married over the Summer between my Junior and Senior years, and when it came to returning for the Fall semester James started to change. He would have my timetable synced with his phone, and if I was more than 2 minutes late getting out of class he would start the mind games and accuse me of cheating. So many times Tamara walked me to his car and wouldn't leave until James accepted that class ran over. That worked fine until she had to have her workplace assignments in the Summer semester and wasn't around campus… that's when the hitting started."
You heard Sy exhale through his nose but didn't look to his face, you weren't ready and still had more to tell;
"James would never hit me when we were in public, he would just act like the perfect husband, but the second the front door to our apartment shut…" you paused, the memory of it causing you to tense; "He would hit me, just the once each time, but he'd use his fist and hit me in my back. The pain was excruciating. He knew exactly where to hit to cause the most prolonged pain, but to make it look like an accidental injury, that i'd fallen on something. There was one time…" your voice started to waiver but you paused and took a deep breath; "I'd gotten a ride home with Tamara as he'd had to work late, but because i'd invited her in for a coffee he was furious as hadn't 'checked' with him in advance. Tam was in the bathroom whilst i was rinsing some dishes in the kitchen, i heard footsteps but thought it was her, only for him to just come up behind me and land a punch in the center of my back. That was the beginning of the end if i'm being honest as Tam walked in whilst my legs were buckling. I'd learnt not to cry, i just compartmentalised and disassociated when it happened by that point"
You finally looked up at Sy and it almost broke your heart. He was blinking away the tears, you hadn't even considered that what you were saying would be difficult for someone who cared about you to hear;
"Sy, it's ok. It's over now"
He let out a very shaky sigh, nodding;
"I know Honey, but I just… I mean, we all have our emotional scars, but you're just so strong now. I'm sorry you went through that"
You reached out for him and he pulled you onto his lap, pressing his forehead to yours and laying a light kiss to the end of your nose to which you looked up at him;
"Do you need a break?"
"A break?"
"Before i tell you the rest"
He paused, before shaking his head;
"No, it's good that we get this all done in one go"
"Tam at that point pulled me aside at school one day, and with the help of our student support made me realise that what was happening wasn't my fault. Her husband was a cop and on his day off, he explained plainly what kind of evidence would be needed for an arrest and conviction, and at that point they helped me set up Nanny cameras"
"So you took that to the cops?"
"Not quite. It was around Thanksgiving and we'd travelled upstate to see his parents. The roads were icy and even after his Dad had said he shouldn't drive after drinking, he still insisted we head home. On a narrow road we spun out going over a bridge and the car ended up in the river below. The car was half submerged and when the cops arrived they found James first and pulled him out, but as they did the car got caught in the current and was washed over a waterfall. James had said there was no-one else in the car…"
"Fuck" Sy's voice was quiet; "How did you…"
"How did they realise I was still in the car? James was still drunk so when he was in the back of the ambulance he let slip that he hadn't been alone. The EMT's radioed back to the cops that were still on scene and they went into the water and pulled me out. They rushed me to the ER in their cruiser as by that point hypothermia had set in"
"You're not angry that they missed you the first time?"
Thinking about Sy's question you considered your thoughts before shaking your head;
"No, it wasn't their fault. It was dark and they'd had verbal confirmation from the driver that no one else was in the vehicle. If anything it increases my anger and hatred for my abuser" you paused; "but that doesn't diminish the feelings of fear i get of him being anywhere near me"
"How did you get away from him in the end?"
"The cops arrested him for driving under the influence whilst he was in hospital. When the statements of the First Responders came in about how he'd lied about me not being in the vehicle they added attempted manslaughter. My emergency contact was Tam so when the hospital called her she brought the evidence from the Nanny cams too. It was enough to get him locked up until trial as no-one posted bail"
Sy was silent for a long time, thinking over what you’d told him and he was absolutely positive that you had held back on a lot of the details, but that didn’t matter to him. All that mattered was that you were safe with him and he’d do everything in his power to keep you safe;
“So you haven’t seen him since that night?”
You shook your head;
“I testified via videolink. The city had a great public defender that made sure domestic violence survivors didn’t have to face their abusers in person. Tam testified in person and said that James tried to stare her down the entire time, but she just ignored him. He was sentenced to 4 years but got out after 3 for ‘good behaviour’, however throughout the whole time he sent threatening letters to my old address. The second he was released he was served with the restraining order. He’s not allowed to come within 200ft of me or my property”
“Does he know where you live?”
“I don’t think so, but the fact that he has entered the state has enough to make sure i don’t turn my back to a room at the moment, at least not until i know he’s heading in the opposite direction.”
There was a moment of silence before he pulled you to his chest and you instinctively hooked your nose beneath his chin. Warm hands smoothed over your back, comforting you. You felt like you were in a cocoon, safe and secure where nothing could threaten you or all you’d worked so hard for. With the brush of Sy’s beard on your face you relaxed to the point of slumber, drifting off into a calm and peaceful sleep.
-
When you woke it was dark, the warm embrace of Sy’s arms still around you, but this time you could tell you were in his bed. Twisting onto your side you smiled wearily and fell back into a deep safe sleep.
-
The sound of a shower woke you a second time, soft pale daylight of the early morning hinted at the windows of the cabin. Turning you realised you were alone in the bed, slipping silently out from beneath the covers you had a thought and a smile spread over your face. Quickly locating your bag you pulled a shower cap from your wash bag and pulled it on, before shedding your clothing and stepping into the steamy bathroom.
You could see the outline of Sy’s tall body where the window on the other side of the bath cast a silhouette through the shower curtain. He turned towards the shower and you could tell he had raised his face into the water, so now was your time to strike. Crossing the small room you carefully pulled the far end of the shower curtain and carefully stepped into the old enamel tub. As you pulled the curtain back in place one of the metal rings clinked against the rail, making you freeze, your eyes darting to Sy who still stood with his back to you, his face in the jets of water, and he let out a little chuckle;
“Honey, if you think you can sneak up on me you’ve got another thing comin’”
He turned and grinned at you, watching you watch him as the soapy bubbles trailed down his body. You couldn’t help but to gratuitously look at Sy in all his naked glory. You missed the smirk tug at the corner of his mouth as he watched you watching him, instead your gaze was transfixed upon the slow creep of his hands as he started to softly tug at his dick, watching it start to swell and grow from its already impressive state. Taking a single step forwards closed the space between you, tilting your head as your mouths met for a brutal kiss, whilst your hand moved to join his, wrapping around his hot girth.
When you pulled away from his lips, Sy let out a small whimper of loss, before watching as you got to your knees, never breaking eye contact. He was hot and heavy in your hand, filling your grasp as you moved your fist up and down. Tentatively you leaned forwards, taking just the tip into your mouth and letting your tongue lave against the smooth red tip.
Sy let out a strangled groan and his knees trembled a little, his hand shooting out to rest against the windowsill whilst the other settled atop your head;
“Baby… please…” he begged quietly.
Staring into those ice blue eyes you opened your mouth and took him as deep as you could, relishing the feel of marble beneath silk, his hardness growing until your cheeks were filled and your throat was cut off from precious air. With what little room you had left in your mouth you worked your tongue softly against the underside, the thick ridge of muscle that ran the length pulsing under your ministrations.
You wrapped your hand around the base of his shaft, grasping him tightly as you moved your head back and forth, letting saliva pool in your mouth and escape from the corners of your lips.
“Oh fuck…” Sy cursed; “That’s so good, get me nice and sloppy, such a good girl”
Sy cupped your cheek, his hand moving back to the top of your head, unsure where to put his hands. Reaching up you grabbed both and pulled them down until they were resting on the back of your head, nodding slightly so he got the message that it was ok.
“Oh god… you’re fucking perfect” he muttered as he started to rock his hips back and forth just a little, fucking your mouth as you relaxed your jaw a little more; “So fucking perfect… look at you with my dick in your mouth, feels so good, that’s it girl, take it deeper”
On a couple of thrusts he got just a fraction too deep and you could feel your eyes start to water, but thankfully your gag reflex behaved itself. You rested your hands on the tops of Sy’s thighs, the muscles tense beneath your touch, and you could tell he was getting close. Slipping one hand between his legs you softly cupped his balls and was rewarded with a guttural groan from above;
“Fuck… do that again and i’m gonna cum down your pretty throat”
Maintaining eye contact you did exactly that, softly cupping and cradling his balls in your palm. You heard him groan as they pulled tight to his body, then the tell tale tremble of cum travelling through his shaft before that salty splash as it hit your tongue. Quickly swallowing he finished on your tongue, pulling free of your mouth as his hand flew to the windowsill and his knees wobbled. His other hand hooked under your arm, helping you to your feet until he could pull you flush to his chest, kissing you fiercely before you pushed him away;
“Sy! I haven’t even brushed my teeth, you’ll be tasting yourself!”
“Nothin’ wrong with that Honey, just a reminder that you were kind enough to do that for me” he let out a contented sigh, before his demeanor immediately changed and he let out a string of ‘OH’s. Quickly spinning around he shut the water off before turning back to you;
“Hot water just ran out… it’s gonna be a while before the tank refills i’m afraid. I know you don’t like cold water…”
With a smile you were thankful for his actions, even in the post orgasmic haze he was probably in;
“No problem”
At that moment a series out loud woof’s and barking came from the other side of the door;
“Uh-oh, need to let Akia out, she only gets like that when she’s gotta ‘go’ go”
-
It didn’t take long until you had dried off what parts of you had gotten wet and dressed in yoga pants and loose t-shirt loaned from Sy, assuring him that you were fine by yourself for the half hour it would take him to walk Akia across the meadow as he did the morning check on the beehives. Setting your laptop up on the small desk in the back of Sy’s bedroom, you plugged your headphones in so you could listen to the morning zoom meeting.
It was 45 minutes later when you glanced at the time in the corner of your screen and you realised that Sy wasn’t back, your stomach grumbled so you decided to seek out some coffee. Switching your wireless headphones to connect to your playlist, you were in your own little world as you wandered into the kitchen, turning the corner only to be greeted by a stranger leaning into the fridge. Shocked blue eyes stared at you from behind floppy dark hair, a youthful attempt at stubble dusted over the stranger’s face. You let out a scream, stumbling back until your hip touched the table as you scrambled for something to protect yourself with, your fingers curling around the handle of the iron skillet Sy had seasoned on the stove the previous night. Holding it up like a baseball bat you yelled;
“WHO THE HELL ARE YOU?!”
The young man dropped the slice of cooked bacon he had been about to eat, holding his hands up in surrender;
“Okay crazy lady, i could say the same about you”
“I asked first!” you demanded, shaking the pan a little, before suddenly the back door of the cabin opened, Akia running in and making a beeline for the dropped bacon, Sy standing in the doorway as both you and the startled young man faced off in his kitchen.
Crossing the room to you in just a few strides, Sy pulled the skillet from your grasp, trying but failing to contain his amusement;
“Darlin’, i want you to meet Mike, Walter’s kid”
Your eyes went wide;
“This is Walter’s son?”
You looked to the man by the fridge who had now shut the door and was giving Akia ear scratches as she leant against his leg;
“Sure am Sweetcheeks”

Ahh, my true passion. Glad there’s this survey around.
Food
I crossed out what I’ve never tried before <- Might as well do this. Thanks for the idea, @justsurveys! :D Will probs bold and italicize the food I love, bold the ones I’ve simply tried at least once and liked, italicize the ones I’ve tried at least once but don’t like all that much, and strikethrough the food I’ve downright never tried before. Lotsa rules, but food surveys don’t come around often and I’m excited for this one lmao. Let’s go.
Food: Your protein

The night I laid you down
I’m pretty sure I’m doing this the wrong way around but this is an older story of mine that I posted on AO3 a year ago. I like this one a lot, so here it is..
Danny and Steve are hosting a dinner party. They argue about the night they got together.
-----
Danny checks the lasagna, the cheese is softly bubbling and it smells divine. He turns back to the salad he’s making, it’s almost done. The garlic bread is resting under a tea towel, and the table is set. He can hear Charlie playing with Steve and the low rumble of something playing on the tv. He looks at the clock, it’ll be ready in an hour or so. Their friends and family are coming for dinner. Chin, Abby and Sarah are home for a few weeks, Max and Sabrina flew in yesterday and Cath got in this morning. So this will be a reunion of sorts. Tani and Junior will be meeting the whole family for the first time.
 As he chops up the last bell pepper two arms slide around his waist. Steve gives him a wet kiss just below his ear, and then proceeds to softly blow on it. Danny shivers in response. A hand forces his head to the side so Steve can kiss him. He hums into it. Steve’s turns him around, pressing him into the counter. Danny opens his mouth and Steve immediately deepens the kiss. After a few minutes of heavy necking Danny pulls back.
 “Don’t start something we can’t finish”
 But he leans back in anyway, pecking Steve on the lips. And again. And then they are kissing again. Danny’s hands slide down over Steve’s back and come to rest on his hips. Pulling him in. Steve quietly groans and starts to lift Danny up, their half hard cocks pressing together. Danny pulls back again and swats at Steve. He looks at the door but it’s still closed and the kids are nowhere near the kitchen.
 “Go. you are a distraction McGarrett.”
 Steve smiles, shrugs and holds up his hands in fake innocence.
 “It’s only because you look so sexy in an apron”
 “Go.”
 He finishes up the salad when he hears the bell ring. The lasagna is done and resting, so he can have a drink with everyone before dinner is served. He walks into a frenzy of hello’s and hugs, and is pulled right into it. Lou pushes a box of cigars into his hands with a wink. Max gives him a bottle of Amaretto, because he figured it would be a pasta meal. Danny gives him a grin, because he isn’t wrong.
 Introductions done they all settle with a drink. Tani is asking a million questions and Chin and Kono happily answer them. Reminiscing about old cases and laughing about first impressions. Especially Danny’s ties, hatred for anything pineapple and love for Jersey are being ridiculed. He gives as good as he gets. The ribbing feels natural and Danny enjoys how they still click so well after so long.
 They move to the big table and Danny busies himself with serving the food. Dinner is delicious, and after the meal they sit at the table drinking Italian coffee. The mixture of coffee, Amaretto and whip cream compliments the lasagna perfectly. Max beams at him, very proud of himself for his foresight. Danny looks around the table, this is the good life. He smiles when he sees Charlie nodding off, leaning heavily against Steve. Sarah is already asleep in Chin’s lap, Danny gestures towards the stairs and soon the kids are in bed.
 When they get back, the bottle of Amaretto is sitting on the table and Jerry is telling the story how he outmanoeuvred a Chinese spy. Not to be outdone Max launches into the zombie story and Sabrina pitches in that Max honestly thought the zombie apocalypse had started that night.
 Tani looks at Danny and Steve before turning to Kono.
 “So did anyone notice when these two actually got together”
 Kono starts to laugh.
 “Oh man I think the whole island thought they were married before these two got a clue.”
 “Oi, we weren’t that bad”
 At Danny’s outburst the whole table breaks out in laughter. Everyone pitches in their story about Danny and Steve being oblivious about their love for each other. It prompts Junior to ask how and when they realised what everyone else already knew. Steve thinks for a minute, glancing at Danny.
 “We were way younger. Ten years ago I think? You wore a dress shirt with a tie. I made you dinner and we danced out back on the lanai to an old Beatles song.”
 “Yeah, it was about eight years ago. I remember you kissing me for the first time that night. God, it seems like yesterday. So I know it really wasn’t a Beatles song. It was a Stones song.”
 “No, I’m pretty sure it was a Beatles song.”
 “Seriously? You are going to argue with me? We are talking about the night we first had .. “
 Danny glances at their family sitting around the table, Grace is grimacing, Samantha is giggling, Will is turning red and the adults are all trying to hide their smiles.
 “I’m positive it was a Stones song, okay? I would never forget anything about that night. Anyway, it doesn’t matter. We got together that night. We confessed our love. We decided to move forward and here we are. Still happy with each other”
 “Yeah that night was magical, it had good food”
 “Oh man”
 “Good company, weather was awesome”
 Danny rolls his eyes.
 “Here we go”
 “Cold beer and the radio playing an old Beatles song”
 “There was no fucking Beatles song! It was a Stones song!”
 Steve makes a show of pretending to think really hard.
 “It might have been a Bon Jovi song.”
 “Who the hell mixes up Mick Jagger and Bon Jovi?”
 “Well excuse me Daniel, I guess I’m no expert ..”
 “No, you really aren’t”
 Steve continues as if he hasn’t heard Danny.
 “On fucking nineties music”
 “Eighties, you putz!”
 “Whatever”
 Danny slaps Steve on the back of his head. Everybody laughs, the topic shifts back to case stories and soon they are enthralled by Kono’s story about the ring of human traffickers and how she helped to put them away.
   *****
 Danny closes the door after seeing the last of their guests off. Grace already left for bed, and Steve is out back on the lanai. He grabs a couple of beers and heads out. Steve takes both beers out of his hands and places them on the table. He turns to Danny and pulls him in close as Mick Jagger’s dulcet voice fills the air. Danny smiles as they sway to the music.

opinion on candy corn? mint chocolate? pineapple pizza??
candy corn
it’s alright, I don’t actively seek it out but I sometimes have some at around halloween
mint chocolate
Pretty good but it varies! I have a mild sensitivity to menthol so sometimes minty candy is Hell (I can’t eat most spearmint-flavored gums or mint tic tacs, for example), but mint chocolate chip ice cream is safe, as are Andes mints. I don’t think I could have junior mints or york peppermint patties, but it’s been a long time since I’ve tried those so maybe I’m misremembering.
pineapple pizza
I’ve literally never eaten pizza that wasnt just, cheese + bread (and sometimes garlic). But I don’t particularly like pineapple either so I don’t think I’d like it

My Mother, My Starter | Kerri Conan
How saving a sourdough starter took on the shape of grief
Before popping the top to take a whiff, I stood lit by the open refrigerator and turned the cold jar in my hands. I’d just returned home from two months at Mom’s bedside, helpless to keep her alive. And now my starter and I are weepy globs, a shadow of our bubbly selves, oozing the strong smell of alcohol.
I’ll save you, I whispered, letting the wet rye suck me under like quicksand.
In the Anna Rae Conan slideshow that orbits my head, she made sourdough bread when I was little, but it’s hard to be sure. She cooked, sewed, fixed, crafted, and grew everything. Papier-mâché. Ceramics. Candles. Decoupage ashtrays. Nude drawings and etchings. Macramé sculptures. Wire figures. Paintings in oil, acrylic, pastel, and watercolor. Barbie clothes that matched our outfits, down to pearl buttons and velvet trim. Ski pants for the whole family. Two fancy dresses for my Junior Miss farce. She hung wallpaper, laid flooring, tiled bathrooms, antiqued old furniture, and grew plumeria, cantaloupes, string beans, and broccoli. Her cornflake-crusted baked chicken was so crisp that as you chewed you could hear crackling behind your eardrums.
Only gardening and cooking — OK, and an underutilized knack for papier-mâché — rubbed off on me. I can do anything, though; A.R. taught me that. She was a teacher all right. Thousands of kids passed through her junior high classrooms during their peach fuzz years. Thinking of the influence she had on all these lives — people who don’t know she’s gone yet carry a piece of her with them — sparks another round of tears. Where would I carry my nugget of her?
Less water is what the starter needs to rebound, or so is the consensus among the online and collegial sources rallied for consultation. Beyond that, the only other agreement is frequent feedings during triage. But I can’t muster visitation that often; my raw grief is penance enough.
Catholic Friday in our 1960s kitchen: Milk-poached sole. Cracked Dungeness with homemade mayo and cocktail sauces. Frocia, usually made with spinach or leftover noodles. Breaded eggplant baked in sour cream and mozzarella. When Sissy and I ate cheesy tuna loaf or begged for fish sticks, she’d make herself a sardine sandwich. (I make the same choice now.) Spaghetti with garlic, Parmesan, dried herbs, and olive oil she called “alla ghierga.” A little help with the reference, please, someone? It’s spelled phonetically here, her voice dictating to me clear and bright.
Midnight Mass. Kid’s jingles. Christmas carols. Acapella anything. Blues and jazz standards spun as lullabies. Karaoke. Piano bars. Evening practice at her grand. She and Dad picked up a real bargain at a repossession warehouse in San Francisco; reach out if you know someone — we’re desperate to find her beloved instrument a new home.
My heart says to simply feed the starter; I wait for a reply from Mom, that voice. How could I ignore one drop? I manage, though, holding back 125 grams, a little more than usual. I lather and scrub the remaining death from the jar to give what I reserved, the mother I’ve nurtured for more than a year, a chance at survival. Then I stir in equal parts water and rye. Damn what anyone says about too much water.
The one who hatched me loved eggs. Deviled. Coconut macaroons. Crème brûlée. Rice custard. In the nest. Hard boiled until the pot accidentally went dry and they exploded all over the kitchen. Pickled. Sliced with a special tool that may have been her mother’s. After she couldn’t use the stove anymore, she scrambled eggs perfectly with cheese using a ceramic mug in the microwave, watching and stirring like a hawk.
Decades ago, Dad wooed clients with Mom’s renditions of restaurant dishes, like tableside Caesar, palm-size spinach-ricotta tortelloni, and braciola tied meticulously with thread. Or maybe a grill-load of shish kebabs was on the menu, or New Joe’s Special — a skillet of chopped beef, eggs, and spinach. (We ate a lot of eggs and spinach when I was little.) Whatever the main, dessert was either coffee-pecan pie or a sugar-crusted domed cinnamon cake with warm lemon curd sauce. Lord, I’ve got to find that recipe.
Cocktail parties. Pigs in the blanket, fondue, bacon-wrapped mushrooms and olives, fried-and-sauced meatballs, briny crab dip, giardiniera with slightly overcooked vegetables. Artichoke spread. Biscotti, rum balls, Russian tea cakes, and pralines. A.R. set an elegant table — including napkin rings she fashioned from gold-leafed plaster of Paris — or a functional buffet with warming trays and chafing dishes. Dad ran the HiFi and bar while Mom replenished hors d’oeuvres. She entertained calmly, wearing full makeup and an updo, in maxi dresses sewn in the wee hours of the previous evening.
My job was to polish the silver. You’re just supposed to let it oxidize now.
Maybe I should expose the starter to absorb whatever’s left of the yeast swirling around my kitchen. I decide to let the jar sit open for 19 hours to jumpstart salvation fermentation. I frequently stick my face up close for signs of breathing. I got you, mama. I got you.
Next morning, no visible action, but the starter smells yeasty, not so boozy. Hope prompts more consulting. I cherry-pick advice — as Mom would have — and decide to keep 100 grams of life-support starter and add 100 grams of rye flour and 50 grams of water, then wait and see another day before giving up. Has anyone seen my corkscrew?
I woke up early, this round now clocking in at 21 hours at room temperature. It smells good enough to taste. I dip in a finger and notice some bounce but no bubbles. Plenty dry, though. Bastard advice online. I pull out 110 grams, match it with water, and stir the slurry until smooth; then add the same in rye flour. Now I’m checking my mother frequently.
In a couple of hours, bubbles. I make a gorgeous loaf and return to the usual weekly feeding-and-baking protocol. Thank you for not dying, I say, this time out loud, relieved to hear my mother answer.

Prompt requests about #TodoBakuMomo please... 😆😆
ATTENTION: requests are closed for a while! I need to hit a deadline at work and focus a bit on college shit, so I will stop taking requests for a week or two. I still have a couple of fics to fill, so that’s not the last you’ll see of me (yet), but please don’t forget me, I will be back!
Tumblr media
that being said, I like how I asked you in private “right, but todobakumomo what?” and you answered me “🙃” because it was tricky, and gave me a lot of liberties, but was also kinda mean. shed me a light here, dudes! give me some direction next time - even if next time is like, next month - because I happened to figure out what to do this time, but I gotta tell you, I’m not that bright, gonna need me a hand.
also, this is only half what I initially thought of writing, the story just went its own way, so  ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
hope you all enjoy your todobakumomo! also on ao3.

For once, Momo had a hold on the control – meaning she had control over the TV channels – and she’d finally have the chance to watch this TV show she’d been planning on watching on her phone because getting the TV was super hard. It was a reality show, and not everyone in her class liked them, but they all had established a rule early on that whoever got the TV first could decide what to watch.
It wasn’t much of a fair rule, but it’d been working so far; in part, it was because the common hall could get so noisy that whoever was trying to watch TV would eventually give up, but mostly because class A actually managed to get along pretty well.
“Season 3 starts today?” Mina asked joining Momo on the sofa, eyes on the channel. There was a bakery program halfway to the end on, but the channel was right. Momo nodded, hiding the control between her leg and the arm of the sofa just for precaution.
“Yep,” she said smiling.
“There’s something about watching little kids cooking better than us, isn’t there?” Shoto said sitting between Momo and Mina, his shoulder brushing on hers.
“What, did it start already?” Bakugo screamed from the kitchen, and they all looked back at him.
“You like Junior Masterchef, Bakugo?” Momo asked surprised.
“Did it start?” he asked instead of answering her, and she shook her head.
“Not yet.”
He groaned and went back to his cooking, so Momo and Todoroki only exchanged a confused look, shrugging it off.
“He fucking loves cooking shows,” Mina told them as if it was a secret. “I know, I found his TV Show Time. But don’t tell anyone or he will kill us.”
“I don’t doubt it,” Momo said honestly and Shoto nodded. On TV, the judges were deciding the winner of the bakery contest.
Only ten minutes and they’d be watching the show they wanted to watch. Momo loved the first rounds when they still were getting to know the participants and see what they could do. She loved – like Shoto said – to see those little ones mastering techniques they couldn’t even fathom.
“Take a slider,” Bakugo said suddenly by Momo’s side, putting a plate in front of her and she eyed the assemble of finger sandwiches in front of her.
“Oh, what are those?” Todoroki asked reaching for a sandwich, but Bakugo slapped his hand away.
“Not you,” he said, and then started naming his snacks. “Ribs mini hamburgers, all of them, this one with arugula, purple onions, gouda cheese. Cheddar, caramelized onions, American lettuce and tomatoes; mozzarella, crispy onions, bacon and crispy lettuce.”
Momo chose one with sesame bread, it was the hamburger with arugula, and then Bakugo let Mina choose one too before he found a seat on the floor, his back against Momo’s legs.
“Hm…” Momo melted as she bit on her sandwich. “Bakugo, your cooking is sublime as always. Do I taste garlic mayo?”
“Homemade, babe,” he said smugly, a cheddar sandwich in his hand, the plate on the coffee table. By her side, Shoto frowned mumbling ‘babe?’ in disbelief, and Mina chuckled.
“It’s so good, isn’t it, Mina?”
“You know I don’t like to compliment Bakugo because he’s already too smug, but yes, it is!” Mina said practically moaning at the end.
“Can I have one now?” Shoto asked and Bakugo eyed the plate again, making a big show of counting them.
“Oh, shit. There are only three options, two of each left, and three of us. ‘m afraid there is none for you, but hey! The ingredients are in the kitchen.”
“Bakugo, that’s no use!” Momo exclaimed. “You never let us have your recipes.”
Bakugo rested his head on her lap to look up at her and frowned.
“No way I’m letting you extras know my secret blends, they’re too valuable.”
“You know, that’s wise,” she said, left hand on his hair. “Can you get me that mozzarella sandwich?”
“Most definitely,” he said, fishing the sandwich for her and giving it to her. The commercial between TV shows ended and Masterchef’s recap started. “Fucking finally.”
Shoto sighed watching Mina reach for another sandwich and was ready to get up to find him some snacks when Momo elbowed him gently. He wanted to ask her if that was now a thing – Bakugo treating her like a person, calling her babe, giving her food; hell, he even wanted to talk about how he decided to sit on the floor against her legs when there still was plenty of room in the loveseat Bakugo would usually lay on just to annoy everyone – but instead, Todoroki was surprised by her offer of a half-eaten sandwich.
“Thanks,” he said, but she just winked and put a finger against her lips in a silence sign, making him smile.
Momo’s eyes went quickly back to the TV, but he did notice the way she was leaning against him with a bit more pressure than necessary, even though she still caressed Bakugo’s hair (stunning Shoto out of his mind to see that the other boy wasn’t complaining at all), and how when she extended her hand over his shoulder he’d promptly give her another sandwich.
He had no idea what was going on between the three of them. Todoroki knew where he and Bakugo stood, and where he and Momo stood, but this thing was not scripted, he honestly had no clue.
Whatever it was they were having, though, Shoto could work with for now.

When Friends make a Mess - Patrick Stump x Reader
Request: Patrick x reader where they’ve been best friends for years but he can’t work up the courage to ask her out and the guys (Pete,joe,Andy) try to help him but it’s a mess and it’s cute(? Does that make sense? Thanks
Warnings: none
Word count: 1 655
Reader: female
Patrick nervously ran his fingers through his hair and put his trucker hat back on. He should not be that nervous to meet his best friend, but he was. He was only meeting her for studying in the library, nothing more. There was no chance he could scare her off while studying. She had been his best friends since junior year of high school and she had put up with him. No reason to start panicking over a simple afternoon in the library. She was his best friend, nothing more. If things only were so easy, then Patrick could push his feelings for her aside. But things were complicated and so Patrick suffered through heartbreak every time he saw her because he knew she would never be his, he kept quiet even when jealousy was eating him alive because she smiled at some other guy for a little too long, he constantly wondered what he could do, to catch her attention while she became more and more beautiful with each day, and in the mornings he woke up, sad because the wonderful moments of his feelings being returned were just dreams. He had never been as much in love with someone as he was in love with (y/n). When Patrick had told his bandmates Pete, Joe and Andy about the mess he was in, they had tried to convince Patrick to ask (y/n) out. But did they not understand that she was his best friend? Never in a thousand years would she go out on a date with him, at best she would feel betrayed and tell him their long lasting friendship was over. No way he was gonna risk that.
“Deep in thoughts?”
The soft voice of the girl Patrick loved so much brought him back to reality. She wrapped her arms around his neck and hugged him. Patrick quickly hugged back, his hand resting on her waist while he felt her burry her nose in his shirt for a moment. She smelled wonderful, as always, but today a hint of honeysuckle was in her hair as well. Damn, why was she this perfect?
“Are you ready to face the abys of Nietzsche’s work,” Patrick wondered, pulling back from the hug he wanted to last forever.
“It’s starring right back at me,” she answered with a wink.
“Whoa, calm down, we haven’t even started yet!” Patrick giggled, understanding the reference to one of the philosopher’s most famous quotes.
Studying was a lot easier for Patrick, when he was not constantly distracted by (y/n). The way she was running her fingers through her hair, the little sounds she made when she was frustrated by the exercise, the soft reflections of the sun on her hair and her eyes, everything was absolutely perfect about her. He tried to remember the last time he had not been in love with her. That had probably been in the beginning of senior year. At the end of that school year Patrick had panicked terribly because he had thought that (y/n) would move away for college, but she did not. This way they both attended the local college together where they had met Patrick’s three band mates.
“Everything alright?”
Again her lovely voice tore him out of his thoughts.
“Everything alright,” he hastily confirmed and pretended to check his phone. There was a message. “(Y/n)? Pete asks if we want to come over for dinner.”
A smile spread across (y/n)’s face at the mention of Pete’s name and immediately a sting of jealousy raced through Patrick’s body. Why did she smile when he talked of Pete? Why did she not smile when Pete talked of him?
“Sounds amazing,” the young woman nodded. “We should send him a study selfie!”
“You think so?”
“Definitely! Let’s do a funny one!”
Patrick shrugged. He was not the biggest fan of selfies and he knew that (y/n) was not that obsessed with pictures of her either so he wondered what all this was about.
Probably so Pete can pay her compliments later, Patrick thought bitterly, but lifting up the phone none the less. He also picked up a book to cover the lower half of his face. (Y/n) leant her head on Patrick’s shoulder, pretending to be asleep. For a moment Patrick concentrated on the feeling of her soft skin against the fabric of his shirt. Why was she so cute?
Patrick pulled a stupid face, pressing the button of the camera a few times to take a couple of pictures. When (y/n) noticed that he was done with taking pictures, she sat back up and spied onto the screen.
“Which one should we send him,” Patrick asked, scrolling through the photos.
“This one, no one back. There. I like your face in this,” she decided.
Patrick nodded and sent it to Pete, adding “Studying killed us, but pizza might revive us.”
~*~
A few hours later Patrick sat on one of Pete’s sofas, pressed between Joe and (y/n). Andy sat in an armchair and Pete sat on the floor, ordering pizza through the phone.
“No, garlic bread! I said garlic bread. No mozzarella please, it needs to be vegan. Yes, no cheese, right. Just garlic bread! Yes!”
(Y/n) giggled at Pete’s helpless gestures. Patrick just stared at her. Wow, she was really pretty when she was laughing. Her nose did that little crinkling thing and her whole face beamed. Now if she was smiling at Patrick that would be perfect.
Pete had told his address as well and hung up when (y/n) suddenly stood up.
“Where are you going,” Patrick asked instinctively. The part of his leg that had brushed against hers felt cold without the girl at his side.
“Just to the bathroom. Don’t worry, I’ll be back. Unless I drown in the toilet that is,” she winked at him and disappeared into the hallway.
As soon as she was gone, all of Patrick’s remaining friends started talking at once.
“Dude, you need to ask her out!”
“She’s so got a crush on you man!”
“When will you finally tell her?”
Defensively Patrick raised his hands.
“Wow, stay calm guys!”
“We’re not staying calm while you are messing up your chance with the girl of your dreams!” Pete had jumped to his feet and almost shouted. Patrick quickly covered Pete’s mouth with his hand.
“He’s right, if you don’t do something soon, she’ll fall in love with someone else!”
“But she already is!” Patrick exclaimed helplessly.
The boys fell silent.
“She is?” Andy asked. He sounded disappointed.
“How do you know? How is it?” Joe wondered.
Patrick slopped down on the sofa, all the guys sitting around him, waiting for his answers.
“She’s in love with Pete.”
Silence again.
“Did she say that?” Andy wanted to know.
“No, of course she didn’t. But its obvious, isn’t it? Every time she sees him she smiles like he is the best thing on earth!”
Pete groaned and hit his flat hand against his forehead. “She’s not in love with me, idiot,” he told Patrick. “She probably just remembers what I told her.”
“What did you tell her?” Joe looked at Pete questioningly. Also Patrick was really interested in that.
“Well, I told her, that Patrick likes her-“
“You did what?” Now it was Patrick who was shouting.
“Shh, quiet,” Pete demanded. “I’m breaking a promise here, but she told me that she likes you too, so finally grow some… you know… and ask her out!”
“Stop lying!” Patrick was furious. What kind of game was Pete playing at?
“Who’s lying?” (Y/n) wandered into the living room, sitting down next to Patrick again.
“Patrick!” Joe giggled.
“What’d he lie about?” Curiously her eyes wandered over to Patrick. He knew what they were planning and he hated them for it.
“He lied about the feel-“
“Stop it Andy!” Patrick shouted. He was embarrassed to lose control like that in front of (y/n), but he really did not want his friends to reveal his well-hidden secret.
“Actually he’s been trying to ask-“
“Joe!”
“He’s terribly in-“
“Pete, I swear to god!”
“What he’s trying to say is-“
“Andy, one more word-“
“What the hell is wrong with you guys?”
(Y/n) was back on her feet. She looked scared and confused. Confused by the mess in front of her, scared of Patrick’s sudden emotional outburst.
“If you don’t tell her, I sure will,” Pete threatened.
Patrick was no aggressive guy, but right now he wanted to punch Pete in the face.
“Tell me what?”
“Okay,” Patrick finally gave in. There was no way to explain everything other than by telling her the truth. “You’ll hate me afterwards, but the guys wanted it this way.” He shot an angry glance at Pete, Joe and Andy, who listened intently. Patrick took a deep breath and continued speaking. “Truth is, I’ve been in love with you for ages and I wanted to ask you out on a date. There now, I said it.”
Patrick felt dizzy. Maybe from his nervousness. He was waiting for the few fatal words that would break his heart forever, but they never came.
Instead he got a soft hit on the back of his head. It did not hurt, his head was hardly even touched, but he flinched anyway.
“You couldn’t have said that any earlier?”
(Y/n)’s voice was shaking slightly as she knelt down in front of Patrick. He looked up into her beautiful eyes, wondering, hoping, praying that she would not reject him. Suddenly she wrapped her arms around him tightly, pulling him close to her.
“I’d love to go out with you sometime,” she whispered only for him to hear.
Patrick’s breath stopped and his heart beat so fast, it was hurting. But it was perfect.
“I’m just really surprised that Pete didn’t lie when he told me you liked me,” she added just as quietly.
Patrick shook his head slightly. “That bastard.”

Not Your Love Song: Chapter 15
Marked Book 2: Not Your Love Song
Chapter 15
[ Previous | First | Next ]
After Darrik parks near Minnisale’s, he comes around to open the car door for Rory, and takes his hand on the way out. Darrik has shorter fingers than Rory, but his palms are larger, and his hands are overall just as big, wrapping comfortably around Rory’s. It’s warm and easy as he tugs him toward the restaurant.
It’s nice.
As they wait to be seated, Darrik idly runs his thumb along the side of Rory’s hand. Rory pulls lightly, and Darrik’s ears go pink. He raises their joined hands. “Sorry, I should have asked. Is this okay?”
“I am the touchiest do-not-touch person you will ever meet,” Rory says. He follows the hostess when she motions, tugging Darrik along with him. Darrik releases his hand, lightly touches the small of Rory’s back instead. He manages to pull Darrik’s chair out before Darrik gets there, but Darrik counters by pulling Rory’s out as well.
The hostess leaves their menus on the table and leaves them to it, as they both settle into their respective seats.
“That’s a strange description,” Darrik says, opening the menu. He pulls out a pair of reading glasses, settles them on his nose. “I forgot these the other night, and while I can read without them, it isn’t comfortable. Apparently I have the eyes of an old person; they’re starting to go bad before I get close to thirty.”
“I’m going to start calling you old man,” Rory deadpans. He knows exactly what he wants already and doesn’t bother opening the menu.
“You wouldn’t be the first.” Darrik smirks. “Seriously, though, if I do anything that bothers you, you’ll let me know, right?”
Rory huffs, rubs at the back of his neck. “Maybe we should clarify a few things.”
Darrik lowers the menu, brows drawing together. “What do you mean?”
“Someone’s going to come take our order. Figure out what you want first,” Rory says. “How do you feel about sharing garlic toast with cheese, or fried ravioli, for appetizers?”
“Both,” Darrik decides. He motions for the waiter to come over, and Rory leans back out of the way while water is poured for both of them. As soon as they’ve ordered and the menus are collected, Darrik leans forward, elbows on the table. “What’s wrong?”
Aesthetically, Rory knows that Darrik is hot. Thorne may have even mentioned it a few times, and Stormy keeps asking how things are with the hot new boyfriend. He’s definitely pretty, with a jawline defined by artful stubble, and high cheekbones. He also continues to look like an absent-minded professor, in a soft grey button down and a blazer over that, faded jeans helping him seem less formal.
But that’s all aesthetic. No matter how good Darrik looks, Rory doesn’t want.
“I guess I wanted to find out exactly what this is, so I have context for the hand-holding and what would bother me or not,” Rory says slowly, gesturing between them. “Not to mention that there are some things you should probably know up front.”
“That really makes me want to ask what things, but I figure you want an answer to the first part before that.” Darrik leans back, his legs bumping Rory’s under the table. “This is a date.” His ears warm from pink to red, a shaded warmth along his cheekbones as well. “If that’s what you want. It’s no secret that I’m not over Noah. I’m probably not even ready to date seriously, so this is non-serious dating.”
Rory bites back a smile. “Non-serious dating, okay.”
“I don’t want you thinking that I’m looking for the one,” Darrik says.
“I’m eighteen. I’m not even thinking about looking for the one,” Rory replies. He tries not to think about the ink on his wrist, silently proclaiming that the one might be nearby. “I’m looking for someone to go out with. Maybe cuddle. Holding hands is definitely fine. When I know someone, I like to be close to them, but I can be standoffish other than that.” He hesitates, because he doesn’t really know Darrik all that well, and the last part is harder to say. “I’m not looking for sex.”
The flush spreads over Darrik’s face, suffusing his skin right down to his collar. “Um. Neither am I, actually. I mean, I’m not opposed to it, as a general thing, but that’s really not what I’m looking for right now. I’d think it’d probably be unhealthy, considering I’m still mourning, and then there’s the age difference.” He echoes Rory’s gesture between them.
“Okay, good. Because I am. Opposed to it as a general thing.” Rory swallows, glances upward as Darrik’s eyebrows go up. “I’m ace. So if that’s a thing that’s an issue—”
“No,” Darrik says quickly. “It’s not an issue. I take it you’re not sex positive?”
“Sex repulsed, I guess.” Rory shrugs. “I just… I’m ace. I have no desire to get in bed with someone for that purpose, and I’m really not interested in hearing about it. Although that part might just be because my brother talks about it a lot. Thorne has no filters.”
When he looks down at his hands on the table, he knows he should probably mention the swirl of grey on his wrist, too. But they’ve both just agreed that they’re not looking for permanency, and Rory doesn’t feel like dumping all his baggage on the table at once.
“So,” Darrik says.
“So,” Rory echoes. “This is non-serious dating with some hand holding and snuggling and companionship and no real plans for the future and nothing involving getting naked.”
He might not want sex, but he has to admit in some weird way, it’s kind of adorable the way Darrik blushes every time it gets mentioned.
Darrik smiles through the flush, taps a finger on the table. “How do you feel about kissing?”
“Haven’t really had a great experience with it yet, but I’m not averse to trying again,” Rory admits. “I’ll tell you if I can’t stand it, as long as you realize it’s nothing to do with you and everything to do with me not liking other people’s tongues in my mouth.”
“Got it.” Darrik ducks his head, picks up his water to take a long gulp. When he sets it down, his smile is soft and gentle. “Now that we’ve got all that hammered out, maybe we should talk about whatever you’ve got planned for Lora?”
His hands lie on the table, and Rory reaches across, tangles his fingers with the tips of Darrik’s fingers. Darrik squeezes gently in return, meeting Rory’s eyes when he smiles.
“Okay, so there are two other guys from Coven that I’m working with,” Rory tells him. When Darrik starts idly stroking Rory’s hand, it feels good. Warm, comfortable. He likes the connection, almost as good as a puppy pile with his friends and family. “Kit’s a junior. He’s from a predictive family, and since you were working on a questioning rit—” Rory cuts off as Darrik’s grip tightens abruptly.
“I don’t want you to work the same ritual,” Darrik says carefully. “I don’t want to risk that.”
“I don’t know if it was the ritual you worked, or who was working it that called the shadows to you,” Rory replies, just as seriously. “The point I was trying to make is that Kit’s innate Talent is looking at possibilities. Shane doesn’t have an innate Talent, and mine has no bearing on this. Unless—what’s Lora’s innate ability?”
“She has an affinity for water,” Darrik says. “We weren’t using it, I don’t think. Why, what’s yours?”
“I can stop other people’s Talents from manifesting,” Rory says. “If you were able to shift, I could keep the beast from coming over you. I basically quiet Talent of all kinds.” He hesitates, decides it can’t hurt anything to say. “When we captured a shadow, I was able to keep it from escaping. But it was exhausting, and not an experience I’d like to repeat. Honestly, I’d rather never meet another one of them.”
“Same,” Darrik says, voice falling hard on the one word. He twists around, sits back as the waiter approaches and leaves the garlic bread and ravioli.
Rory reaches for the garlic bread immediately, ripping one soft, toasted piece apart, letting the cheese stretch between the two pieces. He shoves a huge chunk in his mouth, eyes watering because it’s still too hot to eat, and there’s too much cheese. He chews quickly, grabs for his water, and manages to swallow it down. He sets the rest down and blinks away the tears.
“Hot?” Darrik asks mildly, a hint of a laughter in his voice.
“A bit.” Rory stabs a ravioli with his fork and drags it through the marinara, while Darrik does the same. They both eye each other before Darrik leans in to take a cautious bite.
“Hot,” Darrik declares, and Rory snorts.
He sets down his ravioli and cuts it neatly so he can blow on it, and not embarrass himself further. On the other hand, Darrik seems more amused than embarrassed, nudging his foot under the table, and smiling when Rory glances up.
“Noah had a weakness for fries,” Darrik says with a soft smile. “He never could remember to wait for them to cool.”
“I really wish I could’ve met him.” It’s not just words. The more Rory hears about Noah, the more he sounds like he was probably fun. Big-hearted. Loving life and leaping in, but not offensively loud. He couldn’t be, not with someone like Darrik on his side.
Of course, Rory could also be completely wrong. It’s not like Noah’s around for Dax to introduce them, either. If Noah were still around, things might be easier. Or Dax just might be pissed off to have two ghosts bugging him about the shadow situation, since Orson hasn’t let go of it yet, either.
“Where’d you go?” Darrik gestures with his fork, and Rory shifts his focus back to him.
“Nowhere, really. I do that a lot. Drift off.” The bread’s cooler, and Rory finishes his slice quickly. “I think what we’ll be doing is centering our ritual around Kit’s cards, or whatever method he chooses. So Kit might need to touch Lora, or we’ll have Shane touch Lora and focus Kit, so Kit can have his hands free. I’ll be providing power, or additional ritual, or whatever Kit needs. We haven’t worked out the details.”
“I’m willing to talk to Lora’s parents, but I’d like to….” Darrik’s voice fades; he looks uncertain.
Rory has a feeling he knows where this is going. “If you want to be involved in the ritual and there when we do it, that’s fine, as long as you’re comfortable. They can be there, too. And if you want to meet Kit and Shane, well, Kit wanted me to ask if you’d like to come see the movie on campus on Saturday.” It’s Rory’s turn to feel warm, heat suffusing his cheeks. “You’re probably done with campus life, but the Saturday movies are sponsored by different clubs and groups at PHU. This Saturday it’s SigPsiEp, which is Kit’s sister’s sorority, so he’s taking his girlfriend to it, and he thought that I could bring you. And I’ll tell Shane to just come along, or he can bring someone if he wants.”
“A double date?” Darrik raises one eyebrow.
It sounds so… high school… when he says it like that.
“If you want?” Rory’s voice lilts up, questioning.
“I don’t mind going on campus,” Darrik points out. “I was dating an undergrad. I still have friends at VIT—they were Noah’s friends and they became my friends. I still spend time there. So yes, Saturday sounds good. Where should I park and where should we meet?”
Rory grabs a napkin and Darrik produces a pen for him to write directions and draw a quick sketch of the campus. “We’ll see the 7 o’clock showing, then we usually go to Teas Please after, since it’s too cold for ice cream.”
“That sounds good. I’m looking forward to meeting your friends.” Darrik lifts the ravioli plate, moves the small cup of marinara to the garlic bread plate, then spills the remaining ravioli onto that plate as well, stacking the empty one underneath. He clears space just in time for their dinners to arrive.
The eggplant parmesan is one of Rory’s favorites, and his stomach rumbles when he smells it.
Darrik nudges him under the table. “Don’t look so nervous. Saturday will be fun. You’ll have to text me and tell me what movie’s showing.”
Rory would tell him, except he’s forgotten. And it doesn’t matter right now anyway, as Darrik asks about touring, and Rory asks for more stories from Darrik’s school, and dinner passes in a haze of conversation.
Rory offers to walk back after, but Darrik drives him the short distance to Davison. Before Rory gets out, Darrik says, “Hug?” So Rory leans across the seat, lets Darrik pull him in to a strong hug. Fingers dig into Rory’s shoulders, as Darrik presses his face into the curve of Rory’s neck, and Rory instinctively rubs his cheek against Darrik’s as if he were Alaric. He can feel Darrik’s smile as he returns the same motion.
“Clan really does give the best hugs,” Rory murmurs. “I have to go. I have an early class tomorrow.”
“And homeroom starts at seven for me. But it’s worth it.” Darrik lets him go, and Rory eases out of the car, closing the door quietly behind him. Darrik waits until Rory’s got the door to Davison open, then pulls away.
Rory pulls his phone from his pocket, texts Stormy: Skype? I’m on my way up to my room.
His laptop is chiming when he walks in, and he quickly logs in and answers the call after closing the door to his room. “Hey.”
Stormy’s reclined on her bed, music playing somewhere in the distance. Something driving and techno, probably her roommate. “What’s up?” she asks. “I didn’t miss a song date, did I?”
“I have some lyrics to send to you that I want to work up a rhythm line for, but that’s not what this is, no.” Rory rubs at his cheeks, wondering if he’s still flushed. “I sort of have a boyfriend.”
“You found your soulmate?” Stormy squeals, clapping.
Rory winces, holds up his hand to show the cloud on his wrist. “No, no, it’s not that. I have no idea who that is. I said sort of, didn’t I? It’s Darrik.”
The smile falls away. “Darrik from the show, Darrik?” Stormy tilts her head, brow furrowed. When Rory nods, she continues, “Darrik who’s still mourning his boyfriend? Darrik who’s like way older than you?”
“Yes, and it’s something like six years, and I said sort of,” Rory emphasizes. “We’re dating but not seriously. We’re hanging out. It’s a no sex thing, so you don’t have to worry about that. I’m working on some ritual magic to help him with Lora. We just have fun. And hold hands. And he gives really good Clan hugs.”
“And you like him,” Stormy says.
Rory bites his lip, smiles. “Yeah. I don’t know if I like him exactly like that. He’s got a lot of baggage and so do I, but I’m pretty sure this is the way to figure it out, right? We date. We go to dinner, movies, hang out. And apparently do ridiculous rituals together and potentially fight dangerous shadows.”
Stormy opens her mouth, one finger up, then points it at Rory. “How about you don’t fight dangerous shadows. Stick with the dinners and hugging.” She hesitates, then adds, “And be careful. You barely know him. And he really does have a lot of baggage that you probably can’t fully understand.”
“I know.” Rory wants to say that he gets it, but he’s pretty sure that he doesn’t, not completely. But he’s willing to listen, and maybe that’s all Darrik wants. Which is okay. He’s still feeling his way along this, too. “I just… I feel good about this right now. I like hanging out with him.”
“Then good, I’m really happy for you.” Stormy blows him a loud kiss. “Give him my love, and tell him that if you ever go from not-seriously-dating to seriously-seriously-dating I’m going to probably give him the shovel talk, because that’s what friends do. And while having your heartbroken would give you some serious song writing material, I don’t want it to happen to you.”
“You’re so sweet.” Rory holds up a finger, reaches to grab a fragment of lyrics he shoved in a bag. “Okay, this isn’t much. But follow me with this. I need to figure out what the cadence is before I can do more.”
Because in the end, dating is good, but music is Rory’s life. And there’s nothing wrong with an impromptu song writing date.
