#Andi Mack Meta

Hi! Why do you think 'kids' tv shows add so many meta stuff? The motif/theories/meta things I saw with GMW, HSMTMTS, JATP etc is something I don't see with adults/teen shows. Whats your input on that?
Hi anon! I love this question and I also apologize, I might have loved it too much because I wrote a much longer answer than I was anticipating lol.Any chance I can get about talking about how underrated these shows are, I will absolutely take.
I can firmly agree with you on the stance that some of these “kids” shows seem a lot deeper and have more layers than even adult tv. It’s so funny because I was literally thinking about this the other day. I needed a new show to hyperfixate on while I waited for hsmtmts to come back and I saw the new Emily Osment show on netflix (Pretty Smart). I thought it looked cute and it wasn’t bad, but it definitely did not hold any depth. It was interesting though, because it was a comedy AND they tried to aim for deep moments, symbolism, and potentially future callbacks. However, it lacked something really crucial: heart.
I know that sounds bad, but hear me out. These shows that are getting aired, especially things like girl meets world, andi mack, and hsmtmts are coming from producers who have previous works out to base their shows off of. They have really big shoes to fill, like Andi Mack’s producer was the creator of Lizzie McGuire or creating a show that’s a one off of the hsm franchise. It almost makes these pieces passion projects, where the producers want to make something really great and worthwhile, because they have large names to live up to. Their writing needs to solid and the show needs to feel worthwhile for all audience members involved. I also believe that these showrunners just have a gift for making tv that feels exciting and new to watch. It’s so easy to see how excited their audience gets every week digging through all of the symbolism and meta- an excited audience means more showtime and more praises toward the program (and who wouldn’t want to know their show is enjoyable??) It’s interesting to me because the care towards these shows is almost tangible with how much depth, parallels, and meta is involved.
The issue, I think, lies in the programming the show runners have been allotted to use. They probably got “reasonably” good contracts with Disney, as well as the means to have a highly viewed and produced show (Disney has a lot of popularity and money, so they can accommodate this need). However, this also means that ultimately Disney has the final say. So some of the shows, at times, can feel a little “dumbed down” and cheesy because the showrunners probably feel a need to reach a wider audience. They’re creating shows meant for people in their 20’s-30’s and are having to draw in a core audience of 5-13 at the same time. That is a LARGE shoe to fill, which is why these shows sometimes feel like they give you whiplash. GMW did that to me for sure with Riley. She would be really serious and have these amazing on screen moments that showed her acting chops and then they would make her do something “kiddish” and it would feel like a complete reversal of her character. The most unfortunate part of all of this, is it doesn’t matter how much love and passion the showrunner, audience, or anyone else shows, disney will always be the final decision maker. And if they don’t feel like enough of their “demographic is watching” and the numbers aren’t as high up as they want, the show gets cancelled.
I think the show runners are on a really limited platform that holds their potential back in order to give that platform money. It’s like you can tell the writers are trying to push the absolute limits of what they can do to make these shows meaningful and impactful for their intended audience (people in their 20’s-30’s), but then they hit a glass ceiling and have to come back down for Disney’s core audience (5-13). As scary as it might be for them to sign on with a platform that isn’t as big or might not have as much access to the budget and viewership disney does (it is currently the largest tv company), I think it could really benefit their shows for everyone involved. The writers could make their shows complete pieces without them getting cut too soon, they could be created for their intended audience, and they wouldn’t be confined creatively towards how deep their show can go. Disney+ was a really positive direction for the writing of hsmtmts. It’s like that glass ceiling was pushed just a little higher and you can tell because the story feels more complete and mature (not to mention it survived and got a 4th season… something timothy was worried about).
Ultimately, I think the meta comes from that “heart” piece I mentioned at the beginning of this post. Again, these shows have big shoes to fill if they don’t want to completely dissapoint the older audience that will absolutely come back for them. It’s fun getting to interact and theorize with the shows as well. It makes them feel like they’re a part of you and not just something you casually engage with from time to time. I watch the show with full focus because I don’t want to miss anything and then I watch again and again and again to theorize and contemplate what’s coming up next. I don’t know one tv runner who would hate the idea of a really engaged audience that basically promotes the show for you because of how actively they are in trying to discover all of the nuances of each episode from week to week. That, my friend, is good tv.

Time to over-analyze Tyrus because I didn’t get to do enough of this since I joined the fandom late!
There’s a running theme that I noticed in the first couple of their episodes. As we learn more about TJ, we find that, despite his confident attitude, he’s actually very insecure about a lot of things. He wants people to view him as the cool, confident guy, and he isn’t good about opening up about things that he struggles with or that he’s insecure about.
In the beginning, it’s primarily his dyscalculia, but as we learn more about him, it includes his sexuality (and while not a major plot point, he’s also very embarrassed about his name). To combat this, he’s rude and brash towards people, putting up a front that everything’s fine.
In contrast, Cyrus is an open book in a lot of ways. It does get to the point where he’s self-deprecating on a level that’s really not great, but during his interactions with TJ, he shows the other boy how being open and honest about things isn’t bad, even if they might be embarrassing.
This starts in their very first scene together. TJ comes in, bad attitude and rudeness already in place when he approaches Buffy. He’s clearly upset because of the math situation, and doesn’t want to ask for help, but has literally no other choice. She introduces TJ to Cyrus by telling him to get Cyrus a muffin. Still in jerk mode, TJ says:
Tumblr media
“You can't get your own muffin?”
Tumblr media
Cyrus replies,
“I didn't need this extra level of embarrassment. But no.”
He’s honest and states that it’s embarrassing to him, but admits to TJ that he can’t get a muffin on his own. TJ glances at the muffins, back to Cyrus, and his whole attitude shifts. He goes from jerk mode to giving a genuine smile for the first time since he joined the show, and helps Cyrus get the muffin.
Tumblr media
TJ was embarrassed about his math problems, and was being a jerk because of that insecurity. And he promptly shifts back into jerk mode when talking to Buffy after helping Cyrus.
The next scene is Swingset 1.0. Prior to that, TJ had been through a rough tutoring session with Buffy where he had been forced to confront the fact that he was really having trouble with math. Meanwhile, Cyrus had just had an embarrassing panic attack in front of the guy he had a crush on. Both of them headed outside to take a break from the separate pressures they were facing. TJ sees Cyrus swinging and approaches him. Cyrus is singing the swing song.
Tumblr media
“Nice song. What do you sing when you're on the slide?”
While this is definitely a jerk!TJ line, there’s no real heat behind it when he says it, and he sounds more like he’s just commenting on it rather than making fun.
Cyrus is clearly startled and nervous but sings the slide song anyways.
Tumblr media
Even though TJ caught him doing something embarrassing (singing a little kid song), he doesn’t lie or pretend like he wasn’t. He sings the song, even though he knows he’s potentially giving TJ prime bullying material.
Tumblr media
“Huh. Did not expect you to have a song for that.”
We get another rare TJ smile and he drops the singing thing. He easily could have made fun of Cyrus, but he chooses not to and instead engages him in conversation.
Throughout their swinging scene, they talk about dealing with ‘stuff,’ and we get several more comments from Cyrus.
TJ: Do you hang out here a lot? Cyrus: Only when I'm feeling bad about myself. So, fairly often.
Cyrus: I'm afraid to swing high. That's part of my stuff.
Cyrus was perceptive enough to tell that TJ was struggling with something, and shares his way of dealing with his own problems. He makes a number of comments alluding to the fact that he often has to deal with his own personal problems. Even though all he really knows about TJ is that he’s a bully, he still opens up and is vulnerable with the other boy.
And TJ knows that Cyrus has no reason to do this. He’s best friends with Buffy, who he’s been giving a hard time to, and Cyrus isn’t the type to fight back. He’s taking a chance and being open and honest with TJ with no real reason other than he’s a good person.
Finally, there’s the scene where they talk about TJ’s dyscalculia. While the scene starts with TJ trying to push Cyrus away by being rude to him (the first and only time, I might add), Cyrus continues to push the issue. We get this little scene:
Tumblr media
“Eating your feelings? I do that.”
Once again, Cyrus is being open and honest (and a little self-deprecating). However, his efforts are rewarded because they sit down and TJ finally opens up to him. He’s seen this awkward, dorky, and sweet kid constantly be his own unapologetic self, even though it meant that he could have been made fun of or picked on.
TJ admits something about himself that he’s ashamed of and embarrassed by to Cyrus. He’s still very skittish about others knowing; he’s clearly uncomfortable talking about it when other people walk past. But he trusts Cyrus, and he’s rewarded for that trust when Cyrus has nothing but encouraging and kind words for him.
There are definitely a lot more examples of this later down the line: TJ apologizing to a trash can time capsule!Buffy in the middle of the Spoon, admitting to Jonah that he has dyscalculia and that he made a mistake when they were kids, and ultimately standing up to Kira and playing the piano at the party. But I think that Cyrus being his open and honest self and feeling comfortable to admit when he was embarrassed and such really helped to inspire TJ and make him more willing to be open and honest as well.

When do you think TJ and Cyrus started liking each other?
For TJ it was a crush at first sight story or at least very close to it. He was definitely softer with Cyrus in the muffin scene than he had been with anyone else on the show but I think it’s undeniable that he for sure had a crush on Cyrus by the end of the first swing set scene especially since TJ was being so flirty right from the start. Similar to how Marty was clearly interested if not outright crushing on Buffy right from the party in 1x04. With the writing and the acting and the cinematography of the swing set scene all designed to launch Tyrus it’s no surprise that Tyrus went from crackship to a big ship after 2x11 aired.
As for Cyrus, it was more of a friends to lovers story line and he didn’t realize he had a crush on TJ until 2x25 after the apology rap, when Buffy tells him she’s confused and he replies that she should take a walk through his head. There was certainly a strong connection between them from the start but I think for Cyrus that the spoon and somersault scenes in 2x21 were the turning point coming as they did right before he realized that his crush on Jonah was gone.

A Friendly Shove- Tyrus
So I’m really not a huge part of the Andi Mack fandom, I have just finished watching it during it’s hiatus and then because I picked up on Tyrus I wanted to see what other people have said about their scenes and I noticed some stuff and I wanted to share it because I’m really bad about containing myself with this sort of stuff and I haven’t seen this exact stuff being said 😂😅
Okay so we all know that there are limited scenes with Tyrus as a whole, but the ones we do see I find are always meaningful and hint to their endgame/relationship. I’ve seen posts that comment on how they are there for each other, how they build each other up etc. I’m kind of going to add to that in a way.
Anyway, so I noticed how TJ shoves Cyrus (not in a bad way); in a metaphorical and physical way. Cyrus also does it, but in a different way, but I’ll talk about that last.
So first let’s go to the Muffin scene.
It’s their first interaction and TJ immediately decides to teach Cyrus. Already that’s giving him more of an attachment to him, rather than keeping his distance and just getting what he wants; Buffy’s tuition. That would have meant him just getting the muffin and be done with it..
This already sets up TJ to be a nicer person than what he comes across as. It’s not that he was lazy, because that is emphasised by what he does; that he is kind.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I’m sorry, but Cyrus’ face is priceless. Even before TJ offers to teach him, he is open about his embarrassment, he owns that he doesn’t stand up for himself which I think is lovely also.
I’ll come back to this later, but I’ll put it in anyway. Buffy’s reaction after the game plan.
Tumblr media
“He can’t do that”- Her face says it all as well, so does Cyrus’ side profile towards Buffy as it’s like “Is that what you think?”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“Hey, don’t tell him what he can’t do”- Okay, Buffy was talking to TJ like Cyrus wasn’t even there in the first place, also TJ totally wasn’t there to just counteract Buffy with everything she said either; TJ was sticking up for Cyrus, despite him not knowing him. That is honestly so lovely. I have a theory about TJ anyway in relation to that statement that I might mention later (honestly the muffin scene links to everything with Tyrus).
Tumblr media
Buffy’s reaction, she knew she said the wrong thing probably.
Tumblr media
Ignore the hilarious facial expressions it was the best I could do, but TJ gives Cyrus a push/shove. I would like to say that this is after Cyrus is already moving, meaning it’s not that harsh, though it could easily come across as impatience on TJ’s behalf. I think this is because TJ is just broody in this situation. This is the start of his redemption. But I think at the end of the day, it can be encouraging, it can also be metaphorical because he is putting Cyrus out of his comfort zone, but Cyrus wanted that in the first place.
I think this scene is made better by the fact that TJ actually looks to Buffy briefly when Cyrus disturbs the crowd like “You’re not going to help him?”  or it’s just to the crowd in general.
Tumblr media
He jumps in himself, getting Cyrus his muffin. He still lets Cyrus be the one to take it, he wasn’t that impatient to the extent that he could have just picked it up and shoved it into Cyrus’ hands. It was still a win for Cyrus, TJ just happened to back him up, he was with Cyrus (team/equals visual).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Also I find it hilarious how many times TJ tries not to smile, like his facade of the confident, laid-back school bully falters as he smiles, he’s grinning when he goes to Buffy and I want to say that it’s both because he succeeded in his task and was able to prove himself for Buffy’s tuition. It was just Cyrus in general as well.
Anyway, so moving on I guess.
We then also have the Swing scene (❤❤)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(sorry for poor quality, but you get the idea)
I mean, TJ is literally pushing Cyrus... on a swing.
Again, TJ’s facade falters here as well, when Cyrus calls him “scary basketball guy” TJ introduces himself and it was like he was uncomfortable; he doesn’t like that title. Honestly, he’s just so soft in this scene. He even giggles!
The whole “Swing” is a metaphor anyway. Cyrus goes there because it makes him feel better about himself, he reassures himself and that’s what it stands for, self-love I guess, it’s also just a break from anxiety. So the fact that TJ says about Cyrus reminding him to swing again means that he has gained some happiness again. It also fits in with the theme of not letting people get to them (I will reference this again later).
But also my first thought when I watched this scene was I thought the swing was a reference to childhood; also how TJ was speaking and Cyrus’ little songs made things seem childish. So maybe it was a reference to nostalgia (like most symbolism's of swings), goes into a theory I have about TJ anyway as well.
The thing with swings is that they come back. That’s another thing. One of them (TJ) pushes, but the other (Cyrus is always there). The muffin scene, TJ pushes him forward, TJ ends up having to put himself next to Cyrus as well to really help. Then with the swings TJ is pushing Cyrus, but Cyrus is coming back to him. There is something about TJ also doing the underdog thing as well, he starts off behind Cyrus (having his back), then the underdog thing, he is then facing Cyrus, still pushing him, encouraging him. Honestly it’s so sweet
“That was exhilarating!”
“Want another one?”
“No thank you”
*pouts* “Too bad” *does it again with a cute side giggle*
The fact that TJ calls Cyrus underdog is so freaking sweet as well because it combines the swing scene and also the muffin scene (in my opinion), because in the muffin scene he stood up and kind of routed for Cyrus (”routing for the underdog”) and then it’s just a reference to the swings where TJ performs an “underdog”.
The way the swing scene ends with Cyrus leaving is really nice too. To be honest, those two interactions with Cyrus and TJ so far are with Cyrus making his own decisions. He wanted that muffin and was okay with him doing it himself, then here Cyrus was offering TJ someone to talk to, to confide in without prompt, he had already made the decision to befriend TJ. The swing scene is where Cyrus sees right through TJ because he recognises that he also needs some uplifting. That’s another thing with them both, they aren’t so different, and that fact is what gets TJ to confide in Cyrus every time. Cyrus is a little more free in the respect that he makes it clear when he’s nervous/anxious.
He owns it and that’s part in parcel to what Cyrus’ arc is about; owning himself, which just so happens to be what TJ helps with on first interaction...
Then the final “shoving” scene.
Tumblr media
This is wwaaaaayyyyyy more friendly, playful and encouraging compared to the one in the muffin scene. I honestly think it was meant to parallel it. Cyrus wasn’t walking in, but TJ’s expression and the situation is just way to light to not be friendly and encouraging. It is just a direct parallel situation anyway with TJ helping Cyrus how to somersault is the exact same as TJ helping Cyrus to get the muffin. The context is different now; they know each other, they’re friends and they are getting closer.
So yeah.
So what about Cyrus? This next situation is where both of them metaphorically push.
It’s when TJ tells Cyrus about his Dyscalculia.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
TJ is being broody, to Cyrus of all people, and the amazing thing is that Cyrus already knows TJ well enough to know that he doesn’t mean it. When I first saw Cyrus put his hand on the rail, I thought it was TJ’s arm (a girl can dream, I’m sorry) but yeah, Cryus was reaching out because he knew TJ wasn’t okay, but because TJ hates the idea of having dyscalculia, feeling like he’s dumb and thinks he is looked down upon, he takes it out on people; pushing them away. We see this as TJ walks away from Cyrus. He was the same with Buffy, and Buffy pushed too, but there is something more against why he was the way he was with Buffy, and also Buffy’s response as well could’ve been better. Plus Buffy here in this scene was rubbing it in TJ’s face. Not good.
Tumblr media
Cyrus is practically un-phased, maybe a little disheartened, but he stays where he is; by the rails almost to let TJ know that he is still there.
Tumblr media
Cyrus doesn’t give up though, he goes after TJ, he pushes himself in as TJ pushes him away. The imagery of a door indicates to us already that he is crossing over the border.
Tumblr media
Something tells me that Cyrus following TJ, Cyrus stating that he does the same as TJ (eats his feelings) and then Cyrus sticking around makes TJ feel okay enough to confide in Cyrus. I think it’s also that matched with Cyrus being so open to him anyway and Cyrus in general. It lets TJ know that Cyrus is there, wants to be and isn’t going away. Cyrus enforces that by his words and actions when they actually talk.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Cyrus sits like that for a reason; despite arms folded in front of him- Cyrus is casual and open.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This scene, honestly is beautiful. If there is anything that confirms Tyrus (other than the cast saying that TJ looking back was deffo to Cyrus) I would argue that this scene tells us.
It tells us that Cyrus and TJ are on par “Eating your feelings? I do that”- Cyrus bottles things up/feels bad and eating is a comfort. It is metaphorical in the sense that you swallow and try to ignore your feelings, but also just feel like you need comfort so you turn to food (anxiety and depression does this!!)
It tells us that TJ isn’t all that confident. He doesn’t want people to know he is dumb, or that he has a “problem”- this topic I thought would arise with Jonah because of Andi and Cyrus both saying “You’re Jonah Beck!” claiming that by being that he has no flaws (we all know that’s wrong). It must have hurt a little when Cyrus said to TJ about “How can you be sad? You’re the captain of the basketball team”. Mere seconds before that scene TJ was telling Buffy that he didn’t want Basketball euphemisms used with Math to suggest he only knows basketball- TJ wants to be smart; he is smart. He just needs to get around this obstacle, to own it and not let it get in his way.
Jonah is still portrayed as being good at everything (aside from relationships but I’ll just let that slide), even with his panic attacks, he is still a natural at everything he picks up. TJ is so much more with the fact that we learn he has this one obstacle that to me tells me that he fears what people think of him, that he doesn’t actually like being that person, that maybe he has been put down in the past and maybe has a facade to protect him from stuff. I say this because the thing that really sets TJ at ease is when Cyrus tells him that his teacher can’t fail him or judge him for his dyscalculia, that he is common. It suggests to me that TJ have been privy to people putting him down and he was scared of people (hence the kids that walk through) and his teacher doing that. He is known for his confidence, so I imagine that maybe he doesn’t have such a good home-life or something and they reprimand him if he doesn’t do well. He has to work, unlike all the others who run riot. The only other teen character that we see that has a job is Amber and it’s to help pay and keep up her family. I wouldn’t put it past that TJ is in a similar situation and that maybe his parents aren’t the best, or maybe he has the one parent, who knows. It would be really cool to get more background on him!!!! But yeah, I think maybe here and in the swing scene TJ may have felt like a lost cause, that’s why he had heightened hostility. Also, you see what I say about having a childhood? Having a job already indicates to us that he doesn’t have the same freedom; he has responsibilities, and he doesn’t act like a kid. His childhood may have been taken from him in some way.
This scene also tells us (I feel) with the difference between Buffy and Cyrus in relation to TJ. Buffy was saying and trying to do the exact same thing as Cyrus was saying: “So Buffy was right all along”. Buffy’s actions were just the wrong ones. She didn’t get to know TJ, she didn’t seem to care overly much either (and understandably so). There was a goal. I think she really had to know TJ to really help him in teaching methods. She did try, and she did try understanding with searching into dyscalculia etc, but Cyrus was so much more open and calm... He also knows TJ on a different level because of their similarities and interactions etc. Cyrus has also put in the effort and seen TJ for who he is without any one telling him otherwise. Cyrus’ reaction to TJ saying he has dyscalculia is the best reaction, it’s like he was just learning another casual thing about him, there was no surprise, no pity, just plain “yeah, and?...” attitude.
This approach is just so different, and I think that’s why TJ really appreciates it. It’s chilled out, it’s like it’s the most casual thing in the world, as it should be. It’s so funny though because TJ is all about helping Cyrus own himself, building him up and here Cyrus is, doing that for TJ. Buffy was trying to tell TJ all this but it was lost. Their hostility clouded it. Cyrus was the middle ground. TJ didn’t want to impress Buffy or anything, he had a goal, just like Buffy did with tutoring. TJ and Buffy really aren’t the endgame. That is made clear when TJ tells Cyrus that he is the one that helped him, not Buffy. That is what the fortune teller meant, but Cyrus is so much more than just a friend. That I think starts to change here, and then as time goes on and finally with the look back bit and rap. That is where things properly change between those two mostly. Cyrus is constantly surprised by TJ, but it means more when it’s for a friend also... That is the moment I believe that Cyrus fell for TJ, but for TJ, I don’t know, maybe it’s just been a slow build, but this scene here when he reveals he had Dyscalculia says a lot.
Finally, I wanted to say about what I stated earlier about Buffy saying that Cyrus can’t do something. Honestly, both Buffy and Andi have no faith sometimes with Cyrus, and that’s very sad. I don’t know whether that will be addressed, or Buffy and Andi just cotton on to “Oh, Cyrus is becoming more comfortable and confident with himself, that’s nice. Maybe he can do that” (most likely the latter but we’ll see). They can be a little selfish and yeah, they can just have very little faith in Cyrus which isn’t fair because as (best) friends you are meant to support each other.
So yeah. To finish off that last scene with TJ and Cyrus, I forgot to say about how it ends. Cyrus also was getting worried and Cyrus was also open about that...
Tumblr media
and TJ reassured him, tells him he was the one that helped the most.
Tumblr media
I think what sets this scene apart from his therapy session with Amber and Buffy is how unforced this was, like everything with TJ and Cyrus. It isn’t forced, it is so uncomplicated compared to literally all the other het ships on the show. It’s probably why I like it so much 😂😂
Tumblr media
^ also that is a look of hope, that is hella gay.
But yeah, so Cyrus builds up TJ, just as much as TJ builds up Cyrus. They also push each other in the right direction and they are in it together. They are a team, the set apart from the crowd as well and I can’t wait to see TJ be integrated in the GHC.
Can’t wait to see what comes of them :)

Analysis of Tyrus Scenes in “Buffy in a Bottle”
Everyone tends to focus on TJ’s apology to trash can Buffy and TJ inviting Cyrus to the gym, which are both super important moments, but there’s something else going on in The Spoon scene of Buffy in a Bottle. Something big. Let’s take a closer look.
It all comes down to Cyrus’s list of easy things he can’t do. The fact that Cyrus not only tells TJ about this list, but is eager to share it with him, says a lot.
1. First of all, let’s compare this scene to Cyrus’s first interaction with TJ to see how their friendship has grown.
In the muffin scene, Cyrus immediately tenses up when TJ laughs at him for not being able to get his own muffin. Cyrus’s exact words are, “I didn’t need this extra level of embarrassment.” He thinks that TJ is going to tease him. Just look how mortified he looks when he admits he can’t get the muffin.
Tumblr media
The relief on his face when he sees TJ smile and offer to teach him shows that he didn’t expect that to happen. He was fearing the worst, a very Cyrus thing to do. His anxiety coupled with TJ’s reputation, but he is really pleased to learn that his assumption was wrong.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now back to the Buffy in the Bottle scene, TJ laughs when he first hears about the list of easy things Cyrus can’t do. But this time Cyrus doesn’t think for one second that TJ is laughing at him. They’ve come far enough in their friendship that they can comfortably joke about Cyrus’s issues. A lot of things contributed to this, probably off screen as well, but the most significant moment was when TJ opened up to Cyrus about his learning disability and told him that he was the one who really helped him.
He first shows Cyrus that he trusts him, and his assurance that he won’t tell Buffy that Cyrus taught him “You’re right” is his way of telling Cyrus he can trust him too. (Never mind that Buffy figured it out. Anyways, TJ looked absolutely devastated, like he really meant to keep Cyrus’s secret.) Cyrus sees TJ’s flaws—his learning disability and the way he bullied and manipulated Buffy—and accepts them. They’ve established that trust, and that’s when Cyrus becomes more comfortable about sharing his own issues.
2. Cyrus has always been eager to be friends with TJ, even when Buffy and Andi didn’t agree.
Instead of taking Buffy’s word for it that he’s an awful bully, he gets to know TJ so he can form his own opinions. This is big. Middle schoolers especially are influenced by their friends’ opinions. The fact that Cyrus wants to be friends with TJ even though Buffy hates him means a lot. He’s taking a risk, but he thinks it’s worth taking. It’s actually very mature of him to be choosing his own friends. He even gleefully invites TJ to his bar mitzvah, knowing he might not mix well with the people there. None of that matters because he wants all the important people in his life at his bar mitzvah. That includes TJ.
((Now, most of TJ’s interactions at the bar mitzvah party were with Buffy, but he still showed up in a nice outfit. He could’ve been lazy and shown up in jeans or something, but no, he shows up looking fancy. Because TJ does see this event as significant. Who else would he be trying to impress there? No one. He wants to look good for Cyrus.))
In A Walker to Remember, the risk is front and center as Buffy and Cyrus clash over Cyrus wanting to be friends with TJ. Even in The Spoon scene, Andi is hesitant to let TJ sit with them. Cyrus legit looks like he wants to argue when Andi says she’s not okay with it.
Tumblr media
3. Much of Cyrus and TJ’s friendship has been about helping each other.
In the swing set scene, they establish common ground. They both have “stuff.” It’s interesting that Cyrus is the one who helps TJ in this scene. It’s like he is returning the favor for the muffin by teaching TJ about swinging again. Coincidentally, helping TJ makes Cyrus feel better too, and he’s able to gain a clear enough head to decide that Jonah should be the star of his video. Not only that, but he gives TJ a clear invitation to talk to him again. In Buffy in a Bottle, Cyrus’s list of things he can’t do is another such invitation.
3. Cyrus is eager to share the list with him.
While TJ and Andi are still talking, Cyrus texts the list to TJ. First of all, they’re close enough to have exchanged numbers. They are more than just casual school friends (remember that they share no classes or clubs, only a lunch period), and you can bet they’ve hung out between this episode and the last one. But back to the main point, Cyrus trusts TJ with the list. TJ could show anyone that list, or he could print it and post it around the school, really embarrass him. Since Cyrus knows how TJ treated Buffy, he knows he’s capable of such behavior, but he doesn’t for one second think that TJ would do that to him.
4. The fact that Cyrus is sharing this list at all shows that he wants to work on the list.
He doesn’t want it to be a list of things he can never do. If you had a list of things you couldn’t do and didn’t ever want to do, you wouldn’t want anyone to see it. You wouldn’t want to risk someone forcing you to do something on the list. But TJ has helped Cyrus before (with the muffin), and he seems to feel intuitively that if he shares the list with TJ, TJ can help him cross a few things off it.
The somersault training montage that follows also serves as a good parallel to Cyrus’s attempt to learn skateboarding (2x04 Mama)  Interesting how the result of Jonah’s training was failure—kind of like how Cyrus’s romantic relationship with Jonah never took off. But when TJ teaches him to do a somersault, Cyrus succeeds. It would be a good use of symbolism if this means that his romantic relationship with TJ will succeed.
So, in summary, Cyrus and TJ accept each other’s flaws, and they’re even able to laugh about them. Cyrus wants TJ to help him better himself as a person by expanding what he can do. Cyrus completely trusts TJ now, and this friendship will likely lead to a romantic relationship.

Amber probably had to get free lunches from her school because of her family’s financial trouble, even before she was forced to sell her clothes and get a job, which would feed into her insecurities and make her even more standoffish and hungry to prove how better-than she is.
And, if the Kippin Siblings headcannon is true, that means that TJ also has to get free food from his school, which totally recontextualizes TJ’s behavior in the Muffin Scene. Looking at the scene through that lens, of course he’s so agressive with taking the muffins, crushing the one rendered inedible, being able to literally instruct Cyrus on how to get what he wants. He turned a necessity-an embarrassment, a willing degradation of his worth- into a show of dominance. It’s not strange he gets breakfasts and lunches and snacks at school every day, it can’t be because he needs to-no, he simply wants to, as a power play, and it’s clearly effective. No one even notices he doesn’t have to pay.

Chocolates versus Granola Bar (Gina's 'Sweet Gesture'- Past, Present, and Future)
So I noticed my Chocolategate analysis caused a bit of contention in recent days among the tagged ships, particularly Portwells and Rinas. I should make it clear that when I tag your ships appropriately (by which I mean it’s not anti or hate, an analysis is fair game), please feel free to respond to the post or send me an ask (whatever makes you feel more comfortable) if you agree or disagree! I’m more than open to constructive criticism on anything I post, especially if I tag your ship. Don’t be afraid to engage! I promise I will always try to understand your perspective as well.  😄
That being said, I’ve been thinking about how the Ricky chocogate situation (2.03-2.04) is directly related to the granola bar scene between Portwell in 2.09. I finally learned how to add pics, so I can use visual evidence to back up my claims. Probably gonna be lengthy, so adding a read more. 😅
Additions to Chocolategate analysis:
To start, the theory on who may have gotten Gina the chocolates, whether it was EJ or Ricky, gained traction at different times over the summer. For Rinas, it was repopularized more recently, but started making the rounds back in July (iirc). The theories of EJ possibly being the one to deliver the choco for Gina’s mom showed up back in May.
Tumblr media
Like I said in my original analysis, it really doesn't matter whether or not either boy got her the chocolates because they are ultimately and canonically from her mother. The sweet Valentine's Day gesture Gina was waiting for all day came from Terri because she didn't forget. Work hours for FEMA are long, sometimes 7am to 7pm, so it’s possible Terri remembered their tradition after work, later that night. Maybe Ricky or EJ helped to make that happen. If it was the latter, we can add that on to a long list of sweet gestures EJ has already done for Gina. If it was the former, that doesn't help Rina's interactions in 2.04 because it would mean Ricky contributed to Gina's insecurities (misreading the signs) by not admitting to helping her mom out. He sarcastically states "I go big Gina. You know that" in 2.04, which would only make his behavior towards her throughout S2 worse if he really did get her the chocolates but never admitted to it. Regardless, chocogate isn't about some boy. It's been used to strengthen Gina's bond with female characters (her mom in 2.03, Ashlyn in 2.10, and Nini in 2.10/2.12). Terri didn't forget their tradition, Ash has become Gina's number one confidant, and Nini wants to continue to build their trust/friendship. Now, on to Gina's past, present, and future with sweet gestures (in relation to food).
Ricky, Chocolates, and the Past:
In her convo with Ricky at his apartment in 2.03, Gina admits "Every girl likes a sweet gesture. I speak from experience" which I have no doubt is in reference to Ricky playing WTWMAY to Gina in 1.06 (which was initiated by Gina). Ricky playing her a song on his guitar was a sweet gesture to Gina which she thought was only their moment to share, until Ricky serenaded Nini in front of all the Wildcats in 2.01 (unprompted, might I add). He responds to her statement with "I think you'll get yours too" which Gina misinterprets to mean that Ricky will give her a sweet gesture soon. Unfortunately, after sending her crush an "embarrassing text" (2.04), it turns out that her mom sent her a Valentine after all.
Unbeknownst to Gina at the time, Ricky's statement does end up coming true, just not in the way she thought it would. He foreshadows Gina "getting her [sweet gestures] too" from EJ throughout S2! 😄 She just had to be a little more patient and raise/set her standards over time (starting in 2.05). However, considering her past experience with 'sweet gestures' in regards to Ricky (and how wrong/embarrassed she felt) Gina doesn't want to risk getting hurt again and misread the signs, so it takes her a long time to realize EJ is romantically interested in her. I mean, just look at the way Gina talks about Valentine's Day in 2.04's recap. She resents the holiday by proclaiming "Valentine's Day is a made-up holiday that I choose not to recognize." The audience obviously knows this to be false, especially considering how hopeful and happy she was in 2.03, thinking she received a Valentine from her crush. Thankfully, a surprise present day run-in with Jack at the airport in 2.09 helps Gina realize her own feelings for EJ (by letting go of the past) and that what she's looking for is already presenting itself.
Jack, the VIP Lounge, and the Present:
I didn't know I needed a mini Andi Mack reunion until I saw Sofia and Asher together onscreen again (Buffy and Jonah are all grown up! 😭) I absolutely loved what Jack's character brought to Gina's character arc by 2.09. In their first sit-down convo in the episode, Gina asks Jack a few personal questions in an attempt to get to know him ("So is Miami home?") while she searches her bag for a granola bar. Jack decides to come up with a solution to her problem ("...[I] got a backup plan") by throwing her into a (hilarious!) improv scenario. 😂 Using the skills she learned from Miss Jenn's improv weekend (2.06) and the ones she picked up from Jack (about crying in front of the gate agent), Jack and Gina are able to gain access to the VIP Lounge. Here, the audience gets real insight into Gina's life through her honest conversation with Jack:
Gina: I actually have a much older brother. Though I might as well be an only child.
Jack: He's not around?
Gina: He basically ghosted us when I was a kid. I guess you could say he's a free spirit. (sarcastically) Maybe you two know each other.
Jack: (hurt) Below the belt.
Gina: I'm sorry. I usually don't open up to people. I'm a little rusty.
Jack: You can practice on me.
Gina: Haven't had a lot of luck with that. The no-strings confession. (This is in reference to the Rina 2.06 flashback confession on HSM opening night)
Jack: Ah. You're a fellow member of the Heartbreak Club.
Gina: Oh, I think I'm the president.
Jack: Do you know the trick? Care less.
Gina: Smart. I should try that.
Not only do we learn about Gina's estranged relationship with her absentee older brother, Jamie, we can see she's still hurt and is continuing to process the pain from her heartbreak over Ricky (in healthier ways than before) by acknowledging it and talking about it. Jack being a complete stranger, one she is likely to never see again, gives Gina the confidence to have a real "no-strings confession" later on in the episode when she admits to him "It's cute. You're cute." Jack makes it no secret that he's romantically interested in Gina, which she is aware of. But they both know their time together at the airport is coming to an end. In an effort to make him feel better, Gina says "We'll always have the VIP Lounge" where, through the skills Jack taught her, she was able to enjoy plenty of snacks to satiate her hunger. Unlike with Ricky and the chocolates mishap, Gina doesn't have to question Jack's intention on helping her find something to eat because she's aware of the fact that he likes her. However, instead of meeting her needs himself, Jack shows Gina how to get what she wants. Before leaving, Jack hands Gina a paper airplane by imitating a plane crash (which is symbolic of Gina letting go of her past with Ricky). What else does Gina compare to a plane crash (twice)? Her HSM opening night confession to Ricky in 2.06 ("You know how when the plane is going down, people confess things because they know they'll never have to see you again?" AND "Yeah, the plane was going down.") Though she had a nice time spending the day with Jack, there's only one boy in Salt Lake City who meets Gina's wants and needs in a potential romantic partner. Enter Gina's future boyfriend, EJ Caswell, granola bar in hand.
EJ, the Granola Bar, and the Future:
I remember when 2.09 had first aired and EJ showed up with the aforementioned granola bar, the fandom lost it (some good, some bad) and tried to discredit his sweet gesture. Instead of focusing on the thought behind it, the fandom tried to minimize EJ's sweet gesture for Gina by comparing the monetary value of the granola bar to Jack's gesture in the VIP Lounge and Ricky's sarcastic/joking statement in 2.04. Some screenshots to prove my point:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ricky's "I go big Gina, you know that” is in direct response to Gina (half-jokingly) saying she found “part of a Twix bar near my locker. I can only assume it’s your latest Valentine to me.” Ricky and Gina are trying to joke with each other about the chocolates in 2.04 in an effort to preserve their friendship but it only ends up hurting Gina more (b/c it’s too soon to joke about at this point in S2). The saddest part about Ricky’s statement to Gina in 2.04 is the fact that she does know he goes big/sweet with his gestures when he’s interested in a girl (esp Nini). Some examples include 1.01 (audition for HSM), 1.10 (quitting the show for Ninis chance at YAC/Breaking Free duet), 2.01 (serenading her in Ashlyn’s living room), 2.03 (wrote a song for her for Val. Day), 2.04 (drives thru snowstorm to see her at train/bus station), most of which Ricky initiates himself, and all of which Gina is aware of/eye-witness to. EJs small, sweet gesture of the granola bar is wrapped up in the big, grand gesture of driving to the airport in the middle of the night (during his Spring Break) to pick Gina up after a long day. Ricky’s hope Gina “will get [her sweet gesture] too” in 2.03 comes true multiple times throughout S2b thanks to EJ (paraphrasing) (2.05- “That was amazing...You’re glowing”, 2.07- “I felt bad you’re stuck on lookout alone”, 2.10- They talk over the break). In all these instances, Gina herself calls either EJ or something he did for her “sweet.” In an attempt to lighten Gina’s mood on Valentine’s Day during their convo in his living room (2.03), Ricky tries (unsuccessfully) to cheer her up by giving her hope someday, someone will give her her sweet gesture too (it just won’t be him). I’m not saying it won’t ever be Ricky, but given his track record and the canon facts, he simply doesn’t “go big” for Gina. But he does want her to be happy too, so he gives her hope that someone else will give her the sweet gestures “every girl loves” (2.03).
When making a Movie/TV Show, every little detail is handpicked by the crew to contribute to the story. Nothing is a coincidence or left up to chance, including the background music used in a scene. The show uses the exact same score (music) in the Rina 2.03 convo as the Portwell airport scene in 2.09. Ricky foreshadowing Gina getting her sweet gesture comes true in the form of another food item, this time a granola bar instead of chocolates.

Tumblr media
While it’s a mystery to Gina on who delivered the chocolates in 2.03, EJ hands her something that she was specifically craving all day while stuck at the airport. The granola bar not only shows initiative, it shows the fact EJ pays attention to Gina, cares for her, and was able to anticipate her wants/needs without her having to ask. The way that Ricky shows his care for Nini (through grand/sweet gestures) is the way that EJ shows his care for Gina (also grand/sweet gestures). What Gina has observed between Ricky and Nini (as a former/current couple) is exactly how EJ treats her (even prior to dating). Four episodes after EJ has his moment of realization, Gina finally realizes her own feelings for EJ by the end of 2.09. It’s not until both EJ and Gina are on the same page (with a little help from their friends, including Ricky and Nini) that the narrative rewards them for their patience and courage by 2.10 with their risotto date (I swear these food parallels are killing me 😩). While her past heartbreak (Ricky) almost held Gina back in 2.10, the possibility of a future relationship with EJ, via an official risotto date, gives her the confidence to “put [herself] out there [again] and get [everything!] back” this time (2.05).
Last Note: I used to be a hardcore Rina stan so don’t think I’ll just shut you down if you disagree. I’m open to different interpretations (with evidence to support your claims) if you wanna discuss! 😛 If you got this far, thanks for reading! ❤ lol 😂

TJ and Thelonious Monk
So I know that Thelonious is a deep cut reference to Shrek, and that is wonderful. But that’s not all it is! As a jazz fan and a student who has studied music, I just have to point out that TJ’s parents did name him after Thelonious Monk (1917-1982). Thelonious Monk is an amazing jazz pianist and composer known for unique, individualistic music. His music, while certainly connected to popular movements of the day like BeBop, set him apart as an iconoclast (someone who “attacks cherished beliefs or intuitions”). He and his music were very different from most musicians around him and this made him a very influential force for the future of jazz. TJ being named after an iconic pianist who pushed past expectations and changed jazz forever is so beautiful. It makes so much symbolic sense, and a lot of practical sense too because TJ’s mom is a pianist who passed that along to TJ. So, yes, Luke worked hard to make TJ’s name a Shrek reference, but he also worked hard to choose a musician that represents what TJ’s character stands for.

(1/?)The fact that I thought them saying long distance was a metaphor for how the relationship is slowburn is probably far fetched right? I think Rachel will show up in 3x14, that would be some conflict possibly because Marty is shown running with Buffy :o If I'm gonna be honest I think Muffy will get together romantically but once I meet Rachel I'll either be like "love this new character!" or "i want to cry why are you this way" JUST LET THEM BE HAPPY DISNEY I BEG YOU
(2/?) Tyrus tangents always welcome! My heart broke for both of them. Cyrus is already insecure as we’ve seen and this can’t be good for his self esteem :( TJ is obviously going through something and I’m worried for what it is. Did Kira make him insecure? Or was it something different? Either way this emotional conflict (as you pointed out) feels almost bigger than the gun. Because Cyrus trusts Tj at this point, the gun situation was the thing to cement that
(3/3) Totally agree with being outsold like this episode, while hurtful in aspects was so GOOD. We’re seeing Jonah growth, Muffy and Tyrus growth and I am here for it!! Bexie not having a wedding I was actually okay with? Hopefully Andi’ll be okay too. My cats a Burmese! He just reached his 1st year yesterday :) you have a dog??? What breed? How old? Sorry I love dogs they are great animals -ghostie anon
So like this turned out pretty long bc I addressed pretty much everything you mentioned (most elaborately the buildup and teardown of Cyrus) plus more here and there. Like, I’ve typed a lot before, and I’ve put things under a cut before, but this is LONG. Like when I first got into the fandom and typed a weeks worth of responsed for the Andi Mack Month prompts long. SO UNDER A CUT IT GOES LOL (I’m sorry again for it being practically a 5 page essay ;w;)
To summarize: Rachel will definitely be an interesting aspect of the ep, the things showed of Cyrus’s insecurities plus the fact that somersaults are ‘their thing’ makes it all the more painful, I’m really excited to see what specifically they chose to do with TJ and his insecurities, Jonah’s doing better and I don’t want Jandi to ruin that, this episode has some cool parallels to 1x11, and this episode set up so much with each of the relationships I’m ready to see unfurl. Oh and rip Andi bigtime this episode.
Oh and so you don’t need to scroll all the way down, THAT’S SO CUTE MY FRIEND HAS A BURMESE TOO!!! He always looks like he’s constantly terrified lol I don’t think he likes me. And HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO HIM!!! Doggos are amazing I have a yellow lab and I wub her sm
OKAY ONTO MY HELLA LONG RESPONSE TO YOUR ASKS I LOVE YOU AND IM REALLY SORRY IN ADVANCED
Ooo that’s a cool thought! Maybe maybe! All I thought about the long distance thing is it was to show that Marty has changed a little during their time apart and that it was a plot device to show that Buffy’s competitiveness can cause her to get in over her head still, as well as you know the Marty worrying stuff. But that’s actually really interesting I hadn’t thought of it that way! I wonder how slow burn they can make it though considering how little is left for them to work with.
Pretty much anything Muffy related will cause conflict when it comes to Rachel tbh. Like just them standing next to one another with her knowledge will be something because of the sheer amount of sparks flying between them when they so much as look at each other LOL (You can see my Muffy stan jumping out). And I’m all for it! No offense Rachel, I know you probably make Marty happy and stuff but like… Muffy. I’m honestly kind of curious how Marty and Rachel’s relationship is going to be portrayed considering it’s going to be sunk FAST and I’m pretty sure Muffy will happen extremely soon after so. We’ll see how that goes. Because Muffy is definitely endgame at this point in my opinion, whether it be ambiguous because Rachel and Marty just broke up and they want to find security in the newly rebuilt relationship they have before starting anything or something they show with full confirmation and commitment on screen.
I’m trying my best to have NO expectations of Rachel so we’ll see what happens when I meet her lol. There’s no character in this show at this point I have ZERO opinion on I think (watch me remember some as soon as I finish posting this lol), so I’m pretty sure that I’ll definitely form some feeling about her in the single episode she’s in. But I’m kind of hoping they’re not that strong of feelings. So we’ll see how that goes I don’t want to feel bad for her but I also don’t want to just despise her for being a buffer between Muffy so. WE SHALL SEE WE SHALL SEE.
As for Tyrus, oh my GODS right? Looking at it from Cyrus’s perspective might pain me even more than looking at it in TJ’s.
TJ’s the one person who’s constantly believed in him and never seems to be ashamed of Cyrus, and then this happens. He was the first one to tell Cyrus not to let anyone, even himself, tell him what he can’t do. Then take into account that somersault is one of those big moments in Cyrus’s life where TJ was there and believed in him and didn’t seem to be ashamed or put off by it, even though Cyrus and Andi had insisted it was something Cyrus was incapable of. Both him and his best friend tried to warn TJ against it, yet TJ didn’t give up on Cyrus and was so proud when he was able to do it. But now that same thing that TJ had once been proud of and shown no judgment towards and is something Cyrus considered to be their thing is what TJ winds up opting out of.
It brings me back to s2 when Cyrus said “He wants to be friends with me. Who knows why.” And it makes me really want to cri everytiem. Like you said, the gun situation built up their friendship even more and established its solidarity, and you can tell they got even closer after it. He thought they were comfortable and that he was as important to TJ as TJ was to him (which he IS), especially after the whole “only person I can talk to like this” thing. So TJ not telling Cyrus something, along with that ‘something’ negatively having to do with something he thought was special to both of them, must be a real punch in the gut.  Maybe Cyrus is more secure in himself than I’m giving him credit for and is just feeling betrayed, but I think it’s more of both betrayal, humiliation, and questioning of their whole relationship (which I think I’ve posted about already lol).
AND THEN if you take when he and Jonah were supposed to wear matching jackets together and compare that to him and TJ in this scenario, I’d think that this feels even worse. TJ was the one brought up doing a matching costume in comparison to him bringing up the jackets with Jonah, and instead of just being a jacket from a random sports game he didn’t care for, this was an inside joke that he emphasized was their thing. So it was bigger and more important. This may be me reading into it too much, but considering being ditched in a situation like this is now something that has happened to him before due to the Jonah thing, he might feel even worse about himself for letting it happen to him twice.
I’m putting a lot of emphasis on the fact that it’s their thing, because even though Cyrus and TJ both saying that in the episode was cute for the simple fact that they say they have a ‘thing’, I feel like by saying that it also draws attention to the importance of what the costume was in their relationship. It was them both being proud of having a ‘thing’ and ‘inside joke’ together. And I kinda keep in mind that Cyrus and TJ had been talking about the costume and its importance to two different people trying to stand their ground against two different costumes. They know both of them found the costume funny and was a cool joke between the two of them, but they didn’t necessarily know how much importance it held for the other. But one party backed out of something that actually holds importance and emotional value for someone they claimed they didn’t really hang out with much and with no warning at all. If it were me my anxiety would make me wonder whether it had actually been important to them at all or if it were all in my own head. ;=;
This scene just feels so built up from so many different times we’ve seen Cyrus feel insecure, and now that TJ’s become someone he doesn’t find himself feeling insecure around and someone he instead finds comfort in, having it all compound into TJ no longer being someone who he can feel he trusts makes it so much worse. Especially since it related to something he felt was important enough to them that he’d opted out of the GHC+Jonah costume.
And on TJ’s side I feel so bad that he feels like turning down Kira for Cyrus is something that wouldn’t normally be accepted, and I’m really curious what route they’re going to go in terms of which aspect of what she said had caused him to change his mind, because really there are a few different things they can go about using. They can draw it on the lines of peer pressure and social hierarchy, fear of being too obvious with how he treats Cyrus, make him question himself/his sexuality, etc. and whatever route they do take will essentially come back to TJ’s insecurity.
But like I said, TJ’s never seemed to be ashamed of being close to Cyrus before and has never seemed to care about how being friends with Cyrus (or ‘a person like Cyrus’) might affect his image before, so I’m really interested to see what part of his insecurities caused him to ditch Cyrus. He’s in so much pain when he sees Cyrus (Luke OUTSOLD) that it makes me wonder what pushed him to even consider hurting both himself and Cyrus in the process. Especially when you consider the line from 3x7 where he talks about how if he knew Reed had a gun, he definitely wouldn’t have brought Cyrus. So yeah, I’m really curious and hope to see them actually specify what part of her threat caused him to decide to change his mind. They pretty much need to have him give some explanation to Cyrus in order for things to mend themselves.
I also wonder if TJ will feel bad enough about this to avoid Cyrus himself or if TJ’s insecurities will cause him to feel like he doesn’t have the right or can’t talk to Cyrus without it being risky, or if Cyrus will be avoiding him after this or anything. This seems like a big argument type of thing. No TJ next episode means no confrontation for at least a period of time in-universe, and I don’t think it’ll be Buffy and Andi policing Cyrus again this time. Cyrus is his own person, they know that and acknowledge that more than ever after the gun incident, and I think they know whatever he does in regards to TJ will be his own decision and will support his decision like the good friends they are. People are upset at them for jumping to conclusions about TJ ditching Cyrus but fact of the matter is their friend is extremely upset over something TJ caused, and they’re being protective. Sort of like when Amber had done some bad things to Andi, it took Cyrus and Buffy some time on their own to lower their defenses. Plus, looking at Cyrus’s face when he was about to cry after TJ leaves with Kira tells me that while the gun thing wasn’t that personal, this definitely was.
Please say that it’s not a plotline they shove offscreen for an episode like they did with Jonah and Libby before coming back to it. At least show Cyrus having some distress about it and talking about it with maybe Buffy or something. And please please please Andi Mack I beg of you stop hurting TJ like this he’s already gone through so much and he’s NOT EVEN A MAIN CHARACTER SALKDJASKLDJ Anytime he does something like this it will give me flashbacks to “classic TJ” and I DON’T WANT IT TO (okay yes I do because it shows it’s a powerful line and they’re using it to provoke me properly but you know what I mean)
Jonah, Jonah, Jonah. This poor boy. He’s growing into his own person and becoming more understanding that while he should take others feelings into account he also needs to pay attention to himself instead of just always putting on a brave face which I love. But jfc he has the worst timing to make these decisions. Andi already had so many other things just crashing down around her, adding his anvil to the pile was definitely an oof.
I really hope that now that they’re emphasizing both how Andi does not want to be the next ex in the lineup as well as how Jonah finds being in a relationship too demanding that it’s actually building up to a single Jonah endgame, or at the very least an ambiguous endgame. They have it pretty set in stone at this point that Andi and Jonah are fine with their friendship and that Jonah’s been getting himself into relationships he is most definitely not ready for, so with so few episodes left I can’t see how they can turn that on its heel and result in Jandi endgame without some major logic gaps.
For the love of EVERYTHING Jonah take some time to be single. Amber always needing a boyfriend pales in comparison to you always getting a girlfriend even though you don’t even seem to want one???
Also random but I really like how his decision to not partake in the group costume paralleled 1x11 where Andi decided to not just make decisions to make Jonah happy. I feel like this episode in general paralleled bits of 1x11 here and there tbh. Maybe I’m just reading into it too much but not just Jonah and Andi making their own decisions instead of making everyone happy, but the whole costume aspect vs the prison uniforms, Cyrus wanting to back out of Mt Rushmore vs wanting to change into his own outfit for picture day, Buffy helping Cyrus find an replacement vs Buffy helping Cyrus find a way to use the prison uniform well for his picture, and Jonah not participating in Mt Rushmore just for Andi vs Andi not giving up on her movement and taking off the uniform just for Jonah are just the ones I can think of off the top of my head! I haven’t seen anyone mention it and it’s not like its a big obvious parallel, but it’s just some things I started thinking about after comparing Jonah and Andi’s ‘were we ever’-esque speeches.
AND FINALLY MUFFY, TYRUS, AND BEXIE PLOTS OPENING.
Like you said, I love the develpoment they’re giving Muffy and Tyrus! Muffy’s being given time to show that they fit like puzzle pieces even after not talking for awhile and that even after they haven’t talked for awhile and left on not the best of terms, they still clearly care for eachother whatever way that is at the moment, and I can’t wait to see how they add to that care and their dynamic as we get to see the rest of Marty’s episodes in the season. Tyrus getting angst specifically related to their relationship like Muffy’s ‘I want it to be real/I don’t want it to change’, Bexie’s proposal(s) and last name decision, and Jandi’s… well Jandi’s everything since pretty much it’s always something personal blown out of proportion for Jandi is something I didn’t expect and am actually excited for the more I think about it! Like yes it’s going to pain me until the show is back, but I’m not opposed to the angst itself lol. So I’m ready to see how they grow and to what extent they grow by the finale!
Bexie not having a wedding I’m actually okay with too. Like there’s really no rush to get married, if they decide later down the line they do want to have a wedding or just want to officiate it that’s fine. They’re engaged, and they’re committed to eachother, and that’s enough for them if they can be a family. Of course, eventually they’ll probably want to go through with at least something small in the future (if you think hypothetically not with the confirmation they’re gonna have a wedding in show) that’s fine too. Honestly, considering they didn’t even go through the process of beginning to date again before proposing, I sort of think it’d be good for them if they prolong the wedding. There’s no time frame a wedding needs to occur post engagement, right?
I do feel bad for Andi though, since she was so excited and working so hard with Cece to plan for the wedding, only for it to not happen since of course it’s not her wedding and she can’t make them get married if they don’t want to. This episode was just so mean to her oh my gosh, from her parents’ marriage to her group costume, they were things she was so excited for but had to rely on others which ultimately fell through and she just can’t do anything about it really. PLUS trying to work out a friends’ relationship and make it work for them even though it’s really not something she should need to get involved with must’ve exhausted her. Trust me, I know. I know the feeling for both the being excited for something but commitments fall through and the feeling of how tiring it is trying to help friends in a relationship understand their own relationship. Lmao.
I think that was about it in response to what you said. Sorry again that it’s so frEAKING long and if you read this far (whether you’re ghostie or you’re just a random passerby on this LONG ASS POST) you a real one and I love you
I should have applied to TyrusChat with this much commentary i stg SLKAJDLKSAJ except I was too socially anxious to apply and have such disorganized thoughts to dump. Whoops.
I hope this made sense. It took me like 2-3 hrs to type this all out while discording my friends (not related to Andi Mack), so yeah. Hope this was a fun read and is somewhat coherent since it’s 2am. No proofreading we die like… dead people.

I wanted to analyze Cece’s character and her overall arc in the show, because she has quite a bit of character development, but I haven’t really seen it discussed much in the fandom.
The other two characters that have similar redemption arcs are Amber and TJ, but their arcs are a bit different from Cece’s since
They’re a lot younger than her
They are very clearly labelled as ‘mean’ characters from the beginning, which makes it easier to give them a clear path to redemption.
Cece is a very interesting character to analyze, for a number of reasons. She’s a fully grown adult, with a family and a steady, stable life (in opposition to Bex and Bowie, the other adults). When we first see her, she’s very strict, she doesn’t allow Andi to do much, and it’s clear from her first appearance that her relationship with Bex is basically nonexistent, and what is there is pretty bad.
However, we have hints that she wasn’t always the super strict parental figure, and it seems like she went from being relaxed and fun, to super strict, and then back again. I think the best example is the parallel from the parties. At the first party, she shows up, screams at everyone to leave, and is clearly pissed. By the last party, she sneaks in dressed in a dinosaur costume, busts out a few moves, and joins in on the party. It was quite the character evolution, and it was done pretty well.
There are a few things to take into account with Cece’s character when it comes to looking at how she’s changed. The main thing that really drives her development is her relationship with Bex. It informs a lot of her decisions and the way that they interact with one another over the course of the show changes quite drastically, and it’s a crucial part of her character. It’s literally impossible to talk about her character development without talking about Bex with it.
The other thing is her relationship with her sister. While she’s only in two episodes, Mei’s character provides a lot of context for why Cece is the way that she is. I believe it also had an impact on her relationship with Bex to a degree.
Pre-Show: Most of what we know about Cece before the show starts is a little vague. Early on, we get the bikini scene, which implies that she was pretty free-spirited and fun-loving when she was younger. Throughout the course of the show, we see that she loves dancing, and isn’t completely opposed to partying. She is willing to have fun, but due to various events in her life, she became more reluctant to engage in those types of things.
We also see her relationship with Mei through the two episodes. It’s clear that they’re incredibly competitive with one another, and are constantly trying to prove that they are excelling more than the other in life. If their relationship has always been this way, it would explain quite a bit about why Cece tends to strive for perfection. There isn’t really an indication of whether their parents fueled any of this rivalry, so it’s hard to say if it came from them or just from a natural sibling rivalry.
The other main things about Cece are that she doesn’t like surprises and she’s very strict with Andi. We learn both of these things in the first episode, but it becomes clear why after the reveal of Bex being Andi’s mom. I’m sure Cece was worried about Andi being reckless like her mother (and accidentally getting pregnant as a teenager), which lent itself to her strict rules. As far as surprises go:
Tumblr media
I saw someone once suggest that Cece found a pregnancy test in the box, and that would make a lot of sense.
Pre-show relationship with Bex: It’s clear from their first scene together, which is also Cece’s first scene on the show, that the relationship between the two has degraded extremely and barely exists. Through flashbacks and other anecdotes, we get an idea of what Bex was like as a teenager, and what her relationship with Cece was like during that time.
It’s normal for teens to clash with their parents, and for them to rebel against the rules. From what we’ve learned about teenage Bex, she definitely did this more than average. She snuck out, had boys over while babysitting, was heavily into the punk style of fashion, (which Cece clearly didn’t like), and while the show danced around it, she was sexually active as a teen.
Having a teenager that pushed the limits like Bex did definitely would have caused some tension, and I’m sure her parents were worried about her getting into trouble or getting hurt, which likely resulted in arguments and punishments. When she did end up getting pregnant as a teenager, I’m sure that was the tipping point that proved she was out of control (at least in Cece’s eyes).
Now, having your teenage daughter get accidentally pregnant at 17~ish is stressful and complicated enough for any family, but going back to Cece’s relationship with her sister, I have a feeling that it played into everything as well.
From what we can tell, Lin is a little older than Bex. It’s highly likely that Mei was comparing the two girls and making comments about how successful her daughter was. We have little hints of Bex’s childhood that make me think Cece was pushing her do follow a similar path, (for example, it’s mentioned that Bex played piccolo at some point, which doesn’t seem like something she would normally be interested in). While Lin was probably in some top-notch college, Bex ended up pregnant. It seems that Mei did know the secret, and I’m sure she held it over Cece’s head for quite some time.
The combination of Cece feeling like she has to excel as a parent coupled with Bex’s seeming determination to make that as difficult as possible, it’s not surprising that their relationship became a hostile and argumentative one.
Relationship in the show: As we get into the show, we see more of their dynamic, and how they are different from one another. One interesting thing that the show does is give them both the opportunity to be right and wrong. This is also related to Bex’s own arc, where she does mature and learn how to be a responsible adult. And while Cece is generally presented as the more mature character, there are a few moments in the show where she does act rather immaturely.
Cloud 10 and Makeup: A running theme with Bex and Cece and something that actually tied their relationship together was Bex’s makeup abilities. At the beginning of the show, when Bex is trying to get along with her mom, she has them both say something nice to one another.
Tumblr media
Bex gives a heartfelt compliment to her mom, while Cece gives a superficial one. However, it later leads to Cece extending an olive branch of sorts when she asks Bex to do her makeup for a night out. It’s Cece acknowledging one of Bex’s talents, which is honestly the first nice thing we’ve seen her say to Bex. In season 2, Bex starts taking classes so she can be certified to do makeovers, and we finally get the culminating moment when Cece tells her that she’s proud of her. It’s set up nicely, with Bex’s comment in season 1 about how she just wanted her mom to be proud of her, and they have their first ever hug on-screen. It really highlights how badly in shape their relationship was - it took 24 episodes before they touched each other in a positive way.
Then we shift into the Cloud 10 plot, which essentially lasts until the end of the show. For the first time, we see the two working together towards a common goal. There’s a fair share of bickering along the way, but it’s over small things that they are able to work through much more easily.
Moving Out: The moving out plot line also helped to mend their relationship. After rehashing an argument, Bex gets an apartment and moves in with Andi. This is the first time we see Cece actually upset and in tears about something, and really the first time she shows any kind of emotion other than anger or annoyance. While we didn’t get to see what the Mack household was like before Bex showed up, Cece clearly cares very much about Andi and had thought of her like a daughter. Suddenly, she’s gone and it’s a transition that Cece clearly wasn’t prepared for.
However, on the flip side, Bex is once again clearly not prepared for this big move. In what was a stunning moment of maturity, she takes Andi back and admits to her mom that she wasn’t able to manage it after all. She had to put Andi’s needs above her own, and sucks up her pride and admits that she was wrong. In response, Cece brings Andi back to the apartment, because she can tell that Andi misses being with her mom. And despite her earlier insistence that Bex didn’t know what she was doing and that she couldn’t handle things, Cece tells her, “It's harder than it looks, but apparently you're getting the hang of it.”
There’s also the flashback episode where we see what happened when Bex moved out when Andi was a baby. It’s the first time that Cece and Bex really have a conversation and work through things together. Bex thanks her for taking care of Andi, and Cece admits that she couldn’t have left, even if it was the best thing for Andi. They finally are looking at the situation from each other’s points of view, and it’s one of the biggest moments that helps to fix their relationship.
In 2x08, we really start to see a different side to Cece. They’re pretty settled in their routine of Andi living with Bex (and sometimes Bowie), with occasional visits to the Mack house. However, when Cece decides to sell the house, it causes a lot of problems. Andi gets upset, folds her protest cranes, and Cece takes it as an opportunity to try and get Andi to spend more time with her. It leads to a number of scenes where she’s trying to be ‘fun’ and ‘cool,’ even though it’s not what she usually does.
It’s a nice reversal of roles, because we see Bex shift into the more responsible parental role as a result, when she freaks out because Andi never showed up to school and she was worried about what happened. She ends up scolding Cece and Andi for being irresponsible, which is the complete opposite of what we’ve seen so far on the show.
This is where things really start to change, and Bex and Cece both have a chance to act in a way similar to what the other usually does. It’s great because we get to see Cece be more fun and relaxed, while Bex is being more responsible and aware of consequences.
Wedding: The wedding was really the final part of Cece’s arc. Season 3 opens with Bex and Bowie finally getting engaged (which was something Cece was pushing for all the way back in Season 2). We get the second episode with Mei, and it really goes to show how much of a negative influence her sister has on Cece. (As the oldest of four, I can concur that no one can make you revert to being immature like your siblings can). She’s once again determined to prove to her sister that her family is more successful, and hypes up the wedding without consulting Bex.
Rewatching Season 3 makes it very obvious how often Bex protests the idea of the big wedding and how against it she is. She refuses to take part in the planning, constantly makes comments about how she doesn’t want it to be a big deal, and the fact that she ends up panicking and cancelling it was not surprising in the least. While Andi and Cece were so excited about it, they pretty much ignored what Bex was saying, and that’s why it ended up blowing up in their faces. While it’s understandable that they were upset (especially since they did put a lot of work into it), they really didn’t listen to Bex’s wishes.
Cece acts pretty rudely in response to Bex after this, and it’s almost as though she’s reverted back to her season 1 self. Ultimately, what brings them back to good terms is Bex panicking when she has to go pick Andi up from jail. I feel like there was probably quite a bit more to this story line and how they fixed their relationship, but that it got lost due to the reshoots and edits of the later episodes (especially the missing episode).
However, Cece does seem to accept the inevitable, as does Andi, which makes the surprise wedding reveal even better. In the end, everyone got what they wanted, and Bex and Cece have this exchange:
Tumblr media
The culmination of it all in the final episode is Cece leaving for a trip, telling Bex not to have a party. She knows that it’s what’s going to ultimately happen of course, but this time she trusts Bex, and knows that she’s responsible enough to handle throwing this party, and that it won’t be something that ends up going out of control. And in the middle of it all, Cece sneaks back in and has a dance break in a dinosaur costume, before surprising everyone with her reveal. She admits that she actually wanted to come to one of the parties, and now she’s able to. Her last line of the show is a snarky comment about how they’ll need to wash the costume, which is really the perfect way to sum up her character.
To sum it all up, she went from the strict, no fun, rule-abiding authoritarian, to the fun yet responsible “not a grandma.” Through the development of her relationship with her daughter, and the shifting of her responsibilities from mother to grandmother, she was able to open up, have fun, and express her true self. While she’s still practical and responsible, she’s willing to bend the rules and enjoy things in a way she wasn’t at the beginning.

Andi Mack 3x20 Review
We Were Here was a historic episode that finally let Cyrus and TJ canon and was the best ending the series could hope for. Let’s dig in!
It’s been a long road but Cyrus Goodman and Thelonious Jagger Kippen are now boyfriends and we witnessed two gay boys holding hands on Disney Channel. It took two thirds of the series but we’ve gone from the muffin scene to the bench scene.
There’s a lot of obvious censorship and flaws to write about but I’ll do that later and for tonight I’d look to focus on all the good in this episode and this series.
Tyrus are the first canon gay couple on Disney Channel but they won’t be the last and one day, hopefully soon, it won’t be seen as a historic or unusual event to have LGBTQ rep on children’s tv.
Josh and Luke did such a great job with this whole story line and they killed it in the bench scene, so much depended on their body language and facial expressions and it was a beautiful scene. When they both exhaled after holding hands, that was powerful.
I liked that we saw Cyrus go out to initiate the conversation but it was TJ who reached out with his hand and took that risk to bring them together. A callback of sorts to his first conversation with Cyrus where he told him to ‘’walk to the muffin like you already own it’’.
TJ has always been an active character and we saw that in full force tonight as he stood up for Cyrus and ended his friendship with Kira and then went up on stage and started playing Born This Way and of course he was the one to take Cyrus’ hand.
The one good thing I’ll say about the Kira plot is that she was disposed of early and only got a minute of screen time and she thankfully didn’t get redeemed. Her line about TJ choosing Cyrus over her probably registers as her demanding TJ only be friends with her to kids but to those in the know it’s a clear ultimatum to either be straight with her or gay with Cyrus. Loved TJ’s line that she melted after he threw water on her.
Really good character development for TJ as the former bully stands up to a bully. TJ has had such an amazing arc from the mean basketball captain introduced in 2x03; there really was a nice person inside of him trying to get out and Cyrus helped him with that. And even in the finale we still learn new things about him: his name, that his mom is a piano teacher, that he plays the piano, and for the casual audience that he’s gay and likes Cyrus.
I’d guess we’re meant to see TJ starting Born that Way as a statement of sorts on his part, especially since Cyrus is the one to start singing and he later moves to join TJ on stage and it’s their performance that leads to the bench scene.
I’m happy that the bench itself was 3 minutes and that Tyrus got ample screen time in the finale as did Muffy. I’m glad that Luke got to choose TJ’s name and it’s very on brand that he snuck a Shrek reference into it. And kudos to Terri for getting the bench scene approved and for getting the last 40 seconds of the scene where Tyrus canons to actually air.
It was definitely random and I did not expect them to land the rights to a Lady Gaga song but it was a fun scene and it was nice to see most of the cast involved; this must have been what Lilan meant when she said at Fan Fest that we’d see characters interacting who had never interacted before.
Muffy was great. I’m really glad they brought Garren back, whatever other ending they would have had to write for Buffy just wouldn’t have had the same impact. Loved that they call backed to their first conversation. Liked that Marty chased after Buffy and that after she told him how she felt that he was the one to grab her hands and kiss her and then put his arm around her before they walked back in to the party. Probably the sweetest kiss we’ve seen on the series and a very fitting end for the Muffy story line.
Liked the Jandi scene, I’m sure they’ll get back together when they’re older and I’m glad they brought the bracelet back. Jonah saying ‘’Love you Andiman’’ was so sweet and a great last line for the series.
Bexie dancing was sweet, though I wish they had just done it at the wedding.
Did not expect Celia to be in the dino costume! Glad she got to experience the party for a bit.
Andi got into SAVA and is going to use Andi Shack as a studio. Really sweet to take a new photo of the GHC. What an interesting convo they’ll have at the spoon the next day when Cyrus tells them what was so life changing about the party.
Sweet lookback at the important scenes at Andi Shack.
Now we know why they needed semi-pro basketball players for the re-shoots, wonder if the flash forwards were a late addition then.
Glad they didn’t bring up the timeline like the texts did so we don’t have to pretend the finale took place in June.
Nice to see the Mackchat kids finally be able to talk about Tyrus openly as a romantic relationship. It will go a long way to normalizing same sex relationships among kids. As they said, it’s been them all along from the muffin to the swings to the bench.
Looking Back:
Andi Mack really was a special show. Yes it fell short at times but when it was at its best there was nothing like it on tv. It leaves a big void and I hope other shows fill it sooner rather than later. Right from the pilot to the finale it tackled so many important issues: teen pregnancy, unconventional families, therapy, financial issues, coming out, panic attacks, learning disabilities, bullying, manipulation, guns, Chinese and Jewish culture, racism, sign language, sexism, and stereotypes.
Andi Mack made history again and again, right from Andi discovering Bex was her mother to Cyrus coming out to Buffy and Andi and Jonah and saying the words, I’m Gay, to Cyrus getting together with TJ. There are no other characters like Cyrus Goodman or TJ Kippen anywhere on kids tv and I hope we see more characters like them soon, on Disney Channel and elsewhere.
All the cast and crew and writers deserve so much praise for making such a wonderful show and I don’t know when we’ll ever see such a talented, passionate group again. I hope they all go on to big things and find happiness and success with whatever they choose to do.
And a big thank you to all of my followers. It’s been such an honour to be part of this fandom and to have so many people read my posts and send me asks, I never imagined when I started this blog last March that I’d get so involved but I’m glad I did. I’ve made a lot of great friends and have had so much fun. This show has had one wild journey for a Disney Channel show and I’m glad we were here together to experience it.
I’ll still be around, answering asks, liking and re-blogging posts, keeping up with any last interviews or information we get related to the show. And one last reminder to tag your posts and re-blogs with Tyrus and Andi Mack so we can get #1 on Fandometrics. Thank you for reading this long ass post and all my other long ass posts and I wish each and every one of you all the best and I hope that the memories we’ve made here and our memories of the show provide comfort as we go on with our lives.
Love, Dave.

I really think that Jonah is demiromantic, and he’s never really experienced romantic feelings for someone before. He’s having trouble distinguishing between romantic and platonic feelings.
It just makes so much sense. When Jonah is with Amber, he clearly cares about her a lot, and enjoys spending time with her, to an extent. But it’s also clearly strained, and he seems to enjoy spending time with Andi just as much, if not more. And during that time, he really and truly saw Andi as a friend.
At the end of the season, he dumps Amber because of Andi’s ultimatum, and we’re all supposed to assume that he realized he had feelings for Andi. But in the season two premiere, he only says that he wants to “hang out” with Andi again. He never actually says that he wants to date her. I think that Jonah just liked spending time with Andi, and he realized that he enjoyed her company, and the company of the GHC, more than he enjoyed Amber’s company.
(The rest is under a cut bc this got long)
I also think that the reason he didn’t want the “boyfriend” label, is because the only difference between what he has with Andi and what he had with Amber, is the labels. He can’t distinguish between romantic and platonic feelings, and he doesn’t want another Amber situation.
And the panic attacks? Because he equates Andi not liking him romantically anymore to Andi just plain not wanting to see him at all, in any capacity, and he doesn’t want to lose her as a friend. Jonah is insecure as hell, and Andi immediately starts hanging out with a new person. How is he not gonna react badly? Beyond that, during the power outage episode, he thinks Andi is ignoring him. It doesn’t matter if you’re friends with someone or you’re in a relationship with them, being ignored is incredibly anxiety inducing.
I think that Jonah thinks that he must like Andi. But I think he really just wants to be her friend, and she’s not really giving him that option. Andi either cuts him out of her life completely, or wants to date him. And that’s fair. It’s hard to be friends with someone that you like/liked. So for Jonah, when faced with “no Andi” or “date Andi” the obvious choice is to date her, because the thought of not having her in his life makes him unhappy.
I think that if the next episode ends with Andi choosing Jonah, because of the song, and they date again, Jonah will eventually realize that he doesn’t actually want to be in a relationship with her. Hopefully, that will also come with the realization that he has feelings for Cyrus, but that’s just me.

Wow I just realized that I’m Buffy from Andi Mack and I had a TJ. I had a guy that used to bully me in 7th grade named Anthony and everyone called him Tony. He said I got him in trouble and so started bullying me. Fast forward to high school and he starts dating one of my friends and it’s so awkward to me since he was my freaking bully but we ended up hashing things out since he and my friend were dating. I’m pretty sure I even got an ”I’m sorry” out of him three years later. Heck he and some of our other friends attempted to ditch to the beach one day! I say attempted because that didn’t end up happening because almost all of us got caught except Tony who ended up calling me of all people when he was heading back to school scott free that little asshole 😂
But anyway funnily though since I’m a Tyrus (and Jyrus) shipper that I think back on that experience now as Tyrus is gonna become canon soon. I do hope TJ and Buffy’s development going forward continues to get better and it isn’t a one off. I would love to see more instances of TJ being a good person just because it’s the right thing, especially to Buffy for how he treated her. They’re gonna be in each others lives because they both care about Cyrus and he’s important to them. I’m here for the journey ahead.

Realistically, I know Cyrus’ “what show are you watching?” line wasn’t a call out to this fandom but it felt like it and I love the writers for that.
