On Shook, Franklin James Fisher, Lee Tesche, Ryan Mahan and Matt Tong sound refreshed, energized by collaboration and completely confident in their identity. Switching organically between punk, gospel, soul, hip hop, jazz and afro-futurism, Algiers speaks directly to a world under siege, a cacophonous ball of confusion from which they meld a cohesive interrogation of the violence at the heart of American power and a celebration of resistance and survival.
Fisher’s voice is a commanding presence throughout, and the call-and-response construction of many of the songs provides a unifying motif. In the adrenaline-fueled rushes of “Something Wrong” and “Good Man,” the band rediscovers the power that made their first two albums so compelling. But it’s the engagement with collaborators that provides the most interesting moments. Rapper Big Rube calls for resistance over a minimal orchestra swell and massed distant voices on “As it Resounds”; billy woods and Backxwash speak directly to police violence and the manipulation of white grievance over a skittering drum machine and piano motif on “Bite Back.” Mark Cisneros ties the “Out Of Style Tragedy” of domestic weaponization to victory of political and financial self-interest as the band chants Sun Ra’s “Nuclear War” in the background. Jae Matthews provides the female counterpoint to Fisher and Samuel T. Herring on the lacerating “I Can’t Stand It.” LaToya Kent speaks from the perspective of a black mother: “Burying her feelings with the men she bore to life/Her heart heavier than the body.” On “An Echophonic Soul,” DeForrest Brown, Jr’s electronics and Patrick Shirioshi’s sax provide a keening background to an invocation of the other dead in the electric mist.
The record closes with Lee Bains III intoning, “When we die/The neighbors will bring casseroles/Drag shows will be held in our honor/… /The marchers in the boulevard will take their knee/Raise their fist/Drop their face/Silent in the midday traffic/Like a stone in a quick river/When we die, our beloved, our kinfolk/Fear not, we rise.” The song delivers a modicum of hope amid the bloodshed and culture war bullshit that drives it. At a time when black, female and queer lives and agency are being erased and their histories whitewashed, the diversity of voices and styles gives Shook astonishing power as an expression of possibility. Algiers may not have the answers but they’re damn sure asking the right questions. The material is here, heed the call.
As a sidenote, in January Queens producer King Vision Ultra released Shook World, a mix tape built on stems from Shook (supplied by Algiers) and his own sound archive featuring guests such as DJ Haram, ELUCID, Dreamcrusher and Dis Fig. It is envisioned as a companion piece rather than a remix, a conversation which broadens the scope of both records. It is well worth hearing and can be found here: https://algierstheband.bandcamp.com/album/shook-world-hosted-by-algiers
Avatar: the way of water premiere felt more like a family reunion. A wild creative process that was so crazy and fun with the people you love. Can’t wait for everyone to see this incredible experience 😭❤️

You met Forsythe Pendleton Jones Jr when you were in elementary school. You had moved to Riverdale when you were really little. As a kid you didn’t much care for the change, it’s a new experience. The first memory you have Forsythe is when you were introduced to the class since you moved in the middle of the year. You were sat next to a boy with black hair and dark eyes. On the other side of him was another boy with light brown hair and brown eyes. The boy with dark hair was staring at you as you sat down which made you duck your head down as you were shy.
A soft voice broke the silence that surrounded the table. “I’m Forsythe Pendleton Jones Jr. You can just call me Fp though.” You looked at the boy with dark eyes.
“I’m Y/N.” You almost whispered to him. You then looked at the other boy as he was watching you too.
“I’m Fred Andrews.” He spoke.
“You can call him Freddy, I do.” Fp said with a smile. You smiled back.

When you were middle school was when you realized that you liked Fp Jones as more than a friend. You didn’t know how or when you started to like him like that but it grew as you went into high school. In ninth grade was when you both started to grow into your teenage bodies. Starting to adjust life as you grew. It was also the year you both realized that you both liked each other.
You can remember sitting with Fp at his house. You were both in his room on bean bag chairs. Though he pushed his up against yours so close that he was able to lean over and comfortably lean on a little. You were reading, so you didn’t notice that he wasn’t looking at his bike magazine anymore until he said something.
“Y/N...” You looked over at him and saw him staring at you with a look in his eyes that you never seen before.
“Yeah?” You said. You placed the still open book on your chest so your whole attention was on Fp. He put his head down and started to slightly rip the pages of the magazine.
“I think...” He took in a deep breath and let it out as he spoke. “I like you a lot. As more than friends....” He sat there, almost regretting telling you.
But he didn’t look up to see a smile grow on your face. “I like you too.” You told him. His head jerked up and turned to you making you giggle at his face that he made. His eyes were wide with shock and jaw had fallen slightly.
A grin tugged at his lips as he wet his lips and asked breathlessly. “Really?” You nodded at him as you leaned your head back comfortably against the bean bag but kept your eyes on him. “Th-That’s great! Uhhh,” He paused as he thought for quick second. “Do you want to go on a date soon?” He asked in a hurry and excited tone. You smiled at him.
“Sure. Just tell me where and when.” You told him. Next thing you knew he basically threw himself and wrapped his arms around your waist and was on his knees with his head buried in your stomach. You grinned and ran your hands through his hair.
Time Skip
The next important memory you have of you two was when you both joined the Serpents when you were 16. Fp’s dad had put him out, which made your mom take him in. You both lived on the Southside. You both were tired of the shit that people were giving you both so you joined the Serpents. Which turned out to be the best decision you had ever made. They became your family.
When you were 17, you both were in love. You felt you could do anything while he was by your side.
Fp and you had slowly risen in the ranks of the Serpents. It was put on hold once Fp joined the Army right after high school along with your engagement. He served for a couple of years before coming home and picked up where he left off with the Serpents. When coming back it was slightly different. You had also risen in ranks in the Serpents. Kind of like a Mom or caretaker of the gang. If someone was hurt and didn’t want to got to the clinic, they went to you. They had a problem, they came to you.
He couldn’t be prouder.
It was when you were both 25 that you got married, finally. That same year, Fp and Fred started the construction company. Two years later you were pregnant with Jughead. When Jughead was 5, you got pregnant with Jellybean.
The problems started when Jellybean was around 2, mostly because Jelly was a sickly kid. She was constantly in and out of the hospital. Bad immune system which wasn’t ideal with Riverdale weather. This caused hospital bills to start piling high. Making Fp turn to less than legal ways to provide more money for the needs of his family.
But you both were King and Queen of the Serpents by the time Jughead was 10.
The drinking and jail were last straw for you. You couldn’t handle the down hill direction the love of your life was going.

✩⡱ request rules !
types of content i will write: headcanons, drabbles, blurbs based on concepts and thoughts.
what i will write: fluff, angst, hurt/comfort, readers of any gender (male, female, gender-neutral), readers of color and various religions, poly reader inserts with ships, suggestive content (no actual smut, but suggestive and fade-to-black is fine), various types of aus (if you're not sure, feel free to ask).
what i will not write: anything fully nsfw (suggestive content is fine), full-length one-shots (at least not by request), non-canon sexualities for characters, age play/regression, rape or sexual assault, eating disorders, self-harm.
✩⡱ other rules !
i will not write one-shots or full-length fics by request. however, i may write one-shots or series based on my own ideas if i am feeling inspired. otherwise, i will only take requests for headcanons, drabbles, and concepts or thoughts from you that i can turn into blurbs.
i will write for readers of any gender, but if you do not specify the reader's gender in your request, i will automatically make them gender-neutral, so as to keep my writing as inclusive as possible.
my inspiration tends to come and go a lot, so if it takes me a while to get your request out, i genuinely apologize in advance, but i do ask you to not be rude and try to pressure me into writing faster.
please be polite when sending in requests - i do not ask for a lot, just a simple "please" and "thank you" so i know you don't think of me as just a writing machine.
on that note, please try to put some kind of general plot into your requests ! not too much, since headcanons and drabbles are meant to be shorter, but i generally need more than just "x character with fluff". also, please put the type of request, or if it's just a thought or concept, in your ask !
you can request for any character in the list above, as long as their name isn't struck through, but if you want to know if i write for another character in any of these fandoms that isn't listed, feel free to ask ! i might still not write them, but i promise i'll try my best !

I remember reading the first reprint here in the early 90s and indeed being bugged by that green bikini. "Betty just said blue, damned it!" As for the hair -- as someone whose hair color fluctuated a bit in the seasons (sun brings out some red) and tended to be called red head whether there was any strong red tinge there or not, I can let the first one pass. Curious that in the final "no doubts about it, we're getting this right", the girl out-reds Archie's " red head" orange color.
Beauty & the Bieber (Unexpected Musical) — PattyCake Productions music video
youtube
Continuing their signature style of combining childhood classics with modern music, the PattyCake guys decided to tackle a tale as old as time for their next project. In addition to Justin Bieber's melodies and the musical motifs from the 1991 animated film, they also included elements from the forthcoming 2017 live action remake.
Details:
title: Unexpected Musicals — Beauty and the Bieber
performers: Jamie Fritz (Belle); Earl Elkins, Jr. (Beast); E. Michael Evans (Gaston); Joey D'Angelo-LaJoie (LaFou); Alexander Browne (Lumiere); Brad Pettitt (Prince Adam); Leah Lowman (village girls); Anita Wakim (Enchantress)
original songs / performers: [0:15] "I'll Show You" by Justin Bieber; [0:53] "Baby" by Justin Bieber, feat. Ludacris; [1:09] "Love Yourself" by Justin Bieber; [1:21] "Never Say Never" by Justin Bieber, feat. Jaden; [2:12] "Boyfriend" by Justin Bieber; [2:36] "Company" by Justin Bieber; [3:30] "Beauty and a Beat" by Justin Bieber, feat. Nicki Minaj; [4:10] "Sorry" by Justin Bieber; [4:22] "Let Me Love You" by DJ Snake, feat. Justin Bieber; [4:44] "Cold Water" by Major Lazer, feat. Justin Bieber & MØ
written by: "I'll Show You" by Justin Bieber, Michael "BloodPop" Tucker, Sonny "Skrillex" Moore, Theron "Neff-U" Feemster, & Joshua Gudwin; "Baby" by Justin Bieber, Christopher "Tricky" Stewart, Terius "The-Dream" Nash, Christopher "Ludacris" Bridges, & Christina Milian; "Love Yourself" by Justin Bieber, Benjamin "Benny Blanco" Levin, & Ed Sheeran; "Never Say Never" by Adam "Messy" Messinger, Nasri Atweh, Thaddis "Kuk" Harrell, Jaden Smith, Omarr Rambert, & Justin Bieber; "Boyfriend" by Mike Posner, Mason Levy, Matthew "Blackbear" Musto, & Justin Bieber; "Company" by Justin Bieber, Andreas Schuller, James Wong, Leroy Clampitt, Jason "Poo Bear" Boyd, James "JHart" Abrahart, & Thomas Troelsen; "Beauty and a Beat" by Max Martin, Anton "Zedd" Zaslavski, Savan Kotecha, & Nicki Minaj; "Sorry" by Justin Bieber, Michael "BloodPop" Tucker, Sonny "Skrillex" Moore, Justin Tranter, & Julia Michaels; "Let Me Love You" by William "DJ Snake" Grigahcine, Justin Bieber, Andrew "Watt" Wotman, Ali Tamposi, Brian Lee, & Louis Bell; "Cold Water" by Thomas "Diplo" Pentz, Justin Bieber, Karen Marie "MØ" Ørsted, Benjamin "Benny Blanco" Levin, "King Henry" Allen, Philip "Jr Blender" Meckseper, Ed Sheeran, & Jamie Scott
arranged by: Layne Stein & Tony Wakim
release date: 17 March 2017
My favorite bits:
combining the rhythmic strings and the villagers' greetings from "Belle" with the melody for "I'll Show You"
Belle explicitly giving Gaston the brush-off
the tinkling minor motif from the animated movie as Belle enters the castle
Earl's fantastic growl at the end of "Never Say Never"
LaFou's gleeful fawning over Gaston and dancing on the tables
the sneaky ♫ "May-be" ♫ from "Company" overlapping with the tavern scene and leading into the "Be Our Guest" instrumentation
the Beast's lovely vulnerability during the dinner and dancing
using the crunchy horn motif from "Battle on the Tower" to create menace in this version of "Let Me Love You"
Earl's voice being layered over the final lyrics after the transformation
Trivia:
○ The obvious starting point for this project was Jusin Beiber's "Beauty and a Beat", which Tony and Layne had performed as part of VoicePlay's "Wow! Vol. 1" medley during the 2015 Sing-Off tour, but one song does not a full plot make. The guys delved into his extended catalogue to find songs that fit certain story beats and would blend well with the animated movie's score.
○ This was an incredibly ambtious undertaking. According to the PattyCake guys, preparations took five months, and filming spanned "six long days" (and nights, clearly).
○ All that hard work paid off, though, since they were able to time their YouTube release for the same day that the Emma Watson movie hit theaters.
○ VoicePlay recorded a Beauty and the Beast medley for "Once Upon an Ever After" (2012), their first album with Tony as a member of the group. Excerpts from that arrangement later appeared in their music videos "Be Our Guest", "Aca Top 10 – Disney Sidekicks", and "Aca Top 10 – Disney Villains". They also included "Belle" in their "Aca Top 10 – Broadway" countdown.
○ "Love Yourself" was the first song in VoicePlay's PartWork series, which they started as preparation for Tony leaving the group.
○ Layne occasionally used "Baby" as his interruption at the end of VoicePlay's "Road Trip" medley / comedy sketch.
○ On top of their usual studio work, this production required multiple location shoots:
The outdoor village scenes were filmed at the Casa Feliz museum.
Beast's castle interior was the Ballroom at Church Street, which closed in 2019, and was demolished 2023.
The tavern was an actual bar, the Tap Room at Dubsdread.
○ Between the main cast and dozens of background folks, they needed so many costumes that Tony enlisted his sister Anita to help wrangle them all.
○ There are several of Tony's fellow "Beetlejuice Revue" alumni among the main cast:
Michael (Gaston) played Dracula and Frankenstein's monster.
Joey (LaFou) played Wolfman and Dracula.
Brad (Prince Adam) was a dancer in the final "Mashup" iteration of the show.
○ There are also many friends and family among background cast and crew, including several cast members from previous Unexpected Musicals. Olivia Adkins and Leah Lowman are among the village crowd as Snow White and Cinderella. Rachel Copeland and Matthew Buckner are in the tavern crowd, but not as their previous characters. Many of the other villagers were clubgoers in "Hocus Heathens".
○ This video got a nice write-up on Huffington Post.
