The Ranki-Baas are an alien species from the Andromeda Galaxy. Seen as a barbarian race by most of the universe, the Ranki-Baas didn't develop space travel on their own but had it introduced to them by visitors. However, their resource-limited homeworld made them an unattractive prospect for invaders and traders alike. Ranki-Baas culture is simple in its aesthetic tastes - making things for mostly utilitarian purposes and avoiding ornamentation or art-for-art's sake. The main exception is in their songs, which are renowned abroad, even by those who dismiss other aspects of their culture. Singing is extremely important to them - in fact, several wars have been fought solely because a tribal chief or two wanted a venue to showcase a new acapella war chant or the like. They each have two throats, which aid in their ability to harmonize. 

Ranki-Baas only have one sex, with each member having both male and female features. In a mating scenario, both participants tend to give birth. The have live births, but the young are soon after suspended in nutrient-rich mud until they reach adolescence, when they emerge healthy and strong. Ranki-Baas have expandable throats, like the bullfrog of Earth, with are used in threat displays. Their "horns" are actually the upper canine tusks, which grow upward and pierce through their skin. 

Inspired by the Goblins/Orcs from the Rankin/Bass Tolkien movies. I always liked their designs (even though they're not remotely book-accurate) and they always had the best songs. Their gestation period is based on the infamous "Orc Pods" from Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings movies.

Sometimes I wonder what fragrances and perfume marketing would be like in the Mass Effect universe.

Like any sensible company would try and make bank off of customers who wanna increase their chances of getting lucky with other species, no? There would absolutely be fragrances marketed to make yourself "unforgettable to any turian you cross paths with," or "get a krogan's blood raging," even "hanar won't be able to keep their tentacles off you."

I also wonder which scents humans could smell, or if they were only discernable to other species with stronger olfactory, so humans just have to assume they didn't just buy expensive, odourless water, or that they aren't victim of a scam that actually has you spritzing Vorcha BO behind your ears.

I also spend too much time wondering what kind of human scents would be appealing to other races, like would turians lose their absolute shit if you smelled like cinnamon? Would spilling coffee on yourself somehow make you irresistible to asari? What if Krogan really liked the smell of bubblegum?

Inktober 52 2023 - Week 28 - ‘Climb’

Been playing Mass Effect Andromeda after going through the Legendary edition. It's still a buggy game with questionable animations, but the writing is still good enough to keep me engaged. Game play wise, it tried to mix things up a bit. Some bits work and some bits really don't. It's a real pity as I think it had a lot of potential.

I do however appreciate Vetra Nyx. Tall, nicely carapaced space girlfriend.

the queen of a fictional latin american country named Borgonia. She became queen because her parents died, and a Count named Norvello, kept her hidden from the public, in the hopes that she wouldn't steal the hearts of her citizens and allow him to quietly rule the country with an iron fist.

3. Linda Lee Danvers/Kara Zor-El (Earth-One)

The original that sacrificed herself to save the multiverse/remaining people of the surviving universes. She was brought back in "Many Happy Returns" but then goes back to original Earth-One. I think she's now alive somewhere because of convergence??? She also showed up as Linda Danvers's guardian angel and visited Deadman on Christmas. She's met the original legion

4. Ellie Leeds

She was the first to discover Supergirl's arrival, but was exposed to X-Kryptonite and fell into a coma. When she awoke years later - after a chance meeting with Supergirl - she started exhibiting Supergirl's powers, and also believed she was the Girl of Steel.

5. Louise-L

the Supergirl of the 5020th Century; She traveled back in time, to prevent the goals of some villains named Toxus and Tal Belok

6. Matrix/Mae Kent

Matrix, a protoplasmic creation of an alternate universe Lex Luthor. She's met the reboot legion

The helmet supposedly gives superpowers to those who wield it - but it does not. Superboy tricks Lana into thinking it does due to Clark wearing the helmet while bullets bounced off of him

Mass Effect is this really interesting case study of male-as-default vs female-as-default in non human species, because they give us such prominent examples of both.

Turians, salarians, and krogan all have women, yet none are seen on screen until the third game, and even then we get like, one of each in minor roles. Less prominent species like hanar, volus and elcor all have male voices, despite hanar being canonically genderless and volus' gender being considered a 'mystery'. It would've been easy to include female voice actors to any of these, or have an alien with a typically "male" sounding voice be referred to by she/her pronouns (frankly that would make sense for elcor and krogan, but by the time we finally get a krogan woman she sounds just like an ordinary human woman). And this isn't even getting into referring to genderless aliens with neutral pronouns, which seems to never have occurred to anyone as an option (fair enough, they/them pronouns weren’t exactly mainstream in 2007).

But no. The idea of gender as removed from human defaults to male, either visually, vocally, or in terms of pronouns. Voices meant to sound genderless, such as Legion and the hanar, still have male voice actors. None if of this is ever in-game commented upon. It’s just How It Is. The only species other than human in which we see a fairly equal balance of men to women is the quarians, interestingly one of the most human looking aliens outside of asari.

With the all female asari however, not only are they designed to look explicitly human (which they then in-game try to weasel themselves out of by going 'but ALL species find the asari hot, not just humans!' as if we don’t all have eyes), we are also beaten over the head with it constanly. Every single bar you walk into, there are half naked asari dancers. You are constantly hearing background chatter about how hot they are. A genderless character coded as female HAS to be explicitly and traditionally hot, while anything removed from that defaults to male.

The closest we get to non-human looking women is the rachni queen (which I'm guessing is only because of the age old trope of the queen of an insect hive mind) and EDI before she is given a body (at which point we are again beaten over the head with 'non-human coded as female (EDI) has to be hot' vs 'non-human coded as male (geth) get to be actually removed from human').

#mass effect #as I'm writing this I'm currently in the middle of my first play through of andromeda #and you best believe i have Thoughts on how they treat female alien characters in that one #but more on that another day #i do feel i should point out that it would've been very easy for the games to feel lazy and uninteresting in terms of alien species #because of problems like these where they strictly adhere to a human gender binary #but as with many of ther issues ME manages to salvage things by writing genuinely good characters and lore #it's like they told their writers 'hey our audience is straight white men they want hot women and cool aliens' #'adhere to that but otherwise do whatever' and the writers truly did do as much as was humanly possible #and ended up with something genuinely intriguing despite its flaws #nella talks

Happy Art Monday!

Hands have always intrigued me.

Capturing hands in art is both challenging and rewarding. A simple gesture, a tender touch, can convey a myriad of emotions – that's precisely what I aim to portray when I draw them.

This piece is part of a series delving into hand studies. Rather than mere exercises, I chose to illustrate various characters from the game 'Andromeda Six', revealing their connections to the main characters across my multiple playthroughs.

'Us' captures a moment suspended in time, where the interlocking of two hands tells a story of love, connection, and a delicate balance between humanity and technology. In this evocative artwork, Rina's hand, with her ethereal blue skin, delicately clasps Bash's hand, bearing the marks of hard work and devotion, against the backdrop of a sealed steel door.

Bash, a skilled space mechanic/engineer, possesses a bionic arm—a testament to his technical expertise, strength, and resilience—while his remaining human hand bears witness to his vulnerability and connection to his humanity. Standing beside him is Rina, the tilaari, whose touch and presence anchor him in the warmth and essence of what it means to be human.

The subtle details of the clean skin on their connecting index fingers signify their profound bond, transcending technological barriers and embracing the fragility and depth of their emotional connection. 'Us' captures a moment of contemplation, where Bash questions the cost of fully adopting bionic prosthetics, while Rina, through her presence, reminds him of the intangible treasures found in the embrace of humanity.

This artwork is a visual poem, inviting viewers to meditate on the complexities of love, the intertwining of human emotions with technological advancements, and the eternal essence of connection in a vast and ever-expanding cosmos.

But above all, touch, fundamental to our humanity, is the theme of this drawing.
