I made a huge list with animal fiction books lol
Alt link ( https://docs.google.com/document/d/1zkzuxcRz-yNsuYroAwYzQaZPn3lZyVLGV6CBzWBL0DE/edit?usp=drivesdk )
I wanted to know how many there are but I figured people could use it for reading lists (actually it took me hours to check if every book was actually animal fiction and I kinda don't want that to go to waste for a list of books that I don't have the time to read entirely sooo)

Creature Fantasy Writing Tips #1 Sentient and Sapient are Different Words (and You Probably Mean Sapient).
There aren't a lot of resources devoted to writing creature fantasy, animal fiction, xenofiction, or similar human-free works, and I thought I'd help out a little by offering a few tips. My goal here isn't to judge or tell you that you're doing it wrong, but instead, I'd like to help you avoid a few pitfalls or give you more options as a writer. I'm also writing these after my brain is fried from getting my novel work done for the day, so hopefully this'll be coherent and fairly typo-free. With that in mind, here's your first tip. Sentience implies an awareness of self as an organism, while sapience implies wisdom, creativity, and near-ish human levels of intelligence. I think what throws people here is all those scifi documentaries about the "search for sentient life" in the cosmos. That phrase doesn't mean they're searching for little grey men with UFOs, it means they're searching for life larger than single-celled organisms.
If you sit outside reading this, turn around, and see that a squirrel has stolen your lunch, it is accurate for you to say "my sandwich was stolen by sentient squirrels." But if the squirrel shouts insults at you, came up with an elaborate plan to steal your sandwich, and this is part of the squirrel's four-year-plan to control sandwiches in your city, the squirrel is sapient. (It's also sentient, but since all squirrels as we know them are sentient, it'd be redundant to mention that.)
"So how far down do you have to go before life stops being sentient?" I've seen studies on sentience in beetles, so I'd assume below insects.
"Wait, but then.... where is the line between sentience and sapience?" This is a little tougher. Are crows, dolphins, gorillas, or whales sapient? It's a topic for debate, and rather than give you an answer, you can use those as an example of what the line looks like in your own writing.
This distinction can feel a bit pedantic, especially when your favorite scifi and fantasy writers are probably getting it wrong all the time. The thing about creature fantasy fans, though, is that they're here for sapient non-human protagonists, and they know the distinction. You will get angry letters if you mix these up.
That said... if you are writing sentient xenofiction, that's okay! Your audience may be smaller, but a book like Raptor Red by Dr. Robert T. Bakker was immensely popular and influential despite having just a normal Utahraptor as the protagonist. Depending on how you write them, you may get some claims that you're anthropomorphizing your characters. Maybe you want that, maybe you don't. That's entirely up to you. We'll talk about anthropomorphism and disanthropomorphism later on.
That's it for tip #1 =] Just a simple pitfall that writers find themselves in. I apologize ahead of time as you're going to see a lot of non-creature scifi/fantasy fans and authors say sentient when they mean sapient, and it's going to start to irk you as you fix it in your own writing. Just remember to be kind =] Unless you're in a situation where the difference matters, it's probably best to let it slide if someone uses sentience where they mean sapience. If anyone has any questions about how creature fantasy, xenofiction, furry fiction, or animal fantasy differs from other genres, feel free to ask any questions, and I'll try to answer them.

Send it my way! I'm doing a project in a couple of months on animal-pov fiction (animal xenofiction) and I'm looking for examples to study
If you're passionate about a piece and want to yell at me about it please do!
(if you don't know any personally/don't want to share, reblog so I can get my little paws on other people's suggestions >:) )

Seeking Bulgarian Help!
Hello! My name is Rylie, I am a biology major, and I am working on my very own Tabletop Role-playing Game (TTRPG)! If you’re unfamiliar with the term, think of Dungeons and Dragons.
When I began researching for the ecology in which to base my setting, I found that the landscape of Bulgaria worked perfectly, and as I dove deeper into my research I fell in love with the language and culture, and knew that I wanted to incorporate both into my setting.
I am looking for someone fluent in Bulgarian who can help me navigate and utilize the nuances of the language. I am specifically aiming to name characters and locations and have them sound authentically Bulgarian. I also intend to learn Bulgarian, separately from this, so that I can eventually do my own translations! If you are interested, please send me an ask or message me through tumblr DMs. Thank you for your interest and time!

Looking for Alpha Readers!!
[taps mic]
Some time ago I finished my pigeon novel, Highflight's Journey. It's sat ever since, since I've been busy with school and other stuff.
Since it's now been six months since it was done, I'm now looking for alpha readers.
It is 44,089 words and A Bit Rough at points. However, it is a middle-grade animal fiction novel focusing on pigeons, so if you were a Warriors or Guardians of Ga'hoole kid, hopefully you'll enjoy it!
(general content warnings for animal harm and death, similar to things you'd see in Guardians of Ga'hoole or Warriors)
I'm looking primarily for people to gauge plot coherence/understandablity. I'm aware that it's draft one and so there is going to be grammar errors, etc. but this is foundation stuff.
If you are interested in helping out at all, please let me know, even if you can't get to it til post-Nano (understandable) or can't read the whole thing (also understandable). Unfortunately I am a college student and have no money, but I am willing to alpha or beta read in return for you (although again, I'm currently finishing up literature reviews and my thesis so Please Be Understanding about time)

Researching reviews of Watership Down and The Private Life of Rabbits per the above reply post and I stumble upon:
"No author today would think of writing a four-hundred-page book about rabbits," my husband observed.-
Never say never, not only I'll be sure to do it. I'm going to repeat it with as many rabbits and animals as I can think of.

The legend of foxeaters
The glowing disk broke away from its place,  and stayed in the forest, not allowing the night to seep under the crowns. A pair of young Mlorvi stepped decisively into the circle of light. They heard a voice. Thick as honey, flowing like a snake.
“Here you are before me, two fox-eater mlorvies. I can see you. I smell you well.”
“We see you, O messenger of sun!” - answered the male. - “We smell bees' honeycombs.”
“I smell the fox skins that adorn your necks.”
“And they were fairly hunted," - said the female. - “Why do you need us?”
A small solar disk floated low over their heads, barely touching the branches. Highlights slid slowly along their imposing fangs. The Mlorvies stood in awe.
“As the Sun gives you the light of day, so it has decided to endow you with advice. Hear me, Mlorvy fox-eaters! You are young. Your Bepawment has just happened.”
“That is true," nodded the male, raising his paw with a red bracelet.
“And who is the head of your union? Whose is the last roar, who makes the decisions?”
“No one is in charge!” - The female fluffed up, and her huge fangs gleamed. - “My word and my spouse’s have equal weight.”
“So you have created a family, you must be one with each other. Do you always  agree in an argument?”
The fox-eaters shook their heads.
“We often disagree," the male admitted. -” Where to hunt, how to set up a den. But we learn to talk, to find a solution that suits both of us.”
“And that's nonsense, my dear friends," said the light. - “You're getting bogged down in strife, time after time. Wouldn't it be better to decide once and for all, whose word and whose fang you weigh more?”
“How can one know that?” - The female asked. - “And why ever should we? I’m better at hunting, my husband knows how we should build a den. Let each of us leave the last word where we know better.”
“And there will be quarrels with no end, believe me. And there will be fights and squabbles and feuds. I've known plenty of families with Mlorvies who just wouldn't yield to the other. They growled, and spat. Their discord has led to divorce. Or death in a scandalous fight. Believe me, it's a ruinous, ruinous path.”
The couple exchanged anxious glances.
“We learn to negotiate and respect each other's opinion,” - the male objected.
“The others were too, but in vain. Only those who find out once will preserve their union for years to come.”
“And what should we do?” - the female asked thoughtfully.
“Fight with your spouse in a fair fight. Once, only once, but once and for all. Who will defeat, who will show their strength - will be the head in the family for the rest of your lives. And the other will obey without the slightest meow.”
Tumblr media
“So, he will no longer argue about which how to sneak up on the fox?” - The female grinned.
The light flickered vaguely.
“And she won't demand to drag stinking wormwood into our den?” - The male perked up.
“Not if you win. Not a leaf. If you become the head of the family, your word will be inviolable.”
The male fidgeted with excitement, and the female shook her soft mane and turned to her husband.
“I'll win, and our whole den I will win, and our whole den will be soaked in fragrant wormwood!”
“No, I’ll win, and you will not dare to bring a single leaf!”
The saber-toothed cats clashed and tumbled into the grass, smacking each other and threatening with their fangs, until they finally rolled out of the circle of light. Fiercely they squared off under the laughing, invisible gaze of Kvolke-ho.

"I'm going to do an animal story in Africa. With you know lions, spotted hyenas, some leopard, cheetah, jackal around. With zebras, impalas, buffalo.
And a meerkat or a baboon over there, maybe an elephant as well."
