What an incredible explosion of colors! 💥 This Hubble image shows the Ant Nebula (aka Mz 3) in all its stunning glory! Scientists aren't exactly sure how this fascinating shape came to be, but it could mean that Mz3 is hiding a second, dimmer star, orbiting very close in to the bright star in the middle of the system.   At around 8000 light years away though it might take us a while to travel there to find out.   📷: R. Sahai (JPL) et al., Hubble Heritage Team, ESA, NASA

(ESA/Hubble)  Ants in space?
From ground-based telescopes, the so-called "ant nebula" (Menzel 3, or Mz 3) resembles the head and thorax of a garden-variety ant. This dramatic NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope image, showing 10 times more detail, reveals the "ant's" body as a pair of fiery lobes protruding from a dying, Sun-like star.
The Hubble images directly challenge old ideas about the last stages in the lives of stars. By observing Sun-like stars as they approach their deaths, the Hubble Heritage image of Mz 3 - along with pictures of other planetary nebulae - shows that our Sun's fate probably will be more interesting, complex, and striking than astronomers imagined just a few years ago.

An article published in the journal "Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society" describes the discovery of laser emissions in the Ant Nebula. A team of astronomers used observations conducted with ESA's Herschel space observatory to detect a very rare phenomenon connected to a star's death. It suggests the presence of a binary star system in the heart of the nebula.

A space ant fires its lasers
Heres the Ant Nebula aka Menzel 3, or Mz 3 as captured by the Hubble Space Telescope. See the resemblance to the head and body of a garden ant Image via NASA/ ESA/ and the Hubble Heritage Team (STScI/AURA). The European Space Agency said on May 16, 2018 that its Herschel space observatory has observed a rare phenomenon an unusual natural laser emission beaming from the core of the Ant Nebula. This nebula is a striking double-lobed cloud in space located in the direction to the southern conste...
