I am definitely also implicating myself when I say that heathens, especially American heathens, need to be more active in opposing racism within the heathen community. Our symbols and gods are being used as signs of hate and if we want to avoid losing the entire practice to hate groups, we need to not just say we’re anti-racist but also demonstrate it.

When I see a historical drama with an all white main cast, I know that's not an accident. That's not nature. That's manmade, that's a choice.
People of all races were always here, their stories could always be told. If your characters don't have any friends of color "because that's how it was back then" that's a choice. Some white people did have friends of other races. You've decided to write your character as a racist and not challenge that at all.
Because under white supremacy, whiteness is seen as the default, the norm, and everyone else is seen as extra. White stories are just stories, black stories are about racism and overcoming struggle and blackness. Blackness is treated as a genre in film and whiteness is treated as a medium.
And if you do have characters of color and they act like the stereotypes of the past, that's the directors being racist. That was the view that racists saw people of color through back in that time, and you've decided to make it the view the audience sees, objective reality.
Even if it makes sense for the character to be quiet or subservient, there were always people who rebelled who fought back. You could show the camera following them to their home where the act drops and the human is shown.
But no. They made the choice to give history to whiteness.
Just because those times where racist doesn't mean we have to be when portraying them.

Extending heartfelt apologies to anyone who happened to see my reposts of Clementine Morrigan's writings over the past few days.
As a messy, traumatized Harpy committed to honoring all peoples' baseline humanity regardless of what they've done --as well as someone whose lifelong CPTSD is sssllloooowwwllllyyy healing as I embrace personal accountability, avoid B&W thinking, and extend grace and compassion to myself and others-- I was taken in by a lot of what Morrigan says about encouraging non-punitive modalities. I reposted her words without learning how she herself is actively complicit in perpetuating ongoing harm to others in leftist and liberal spheres, especially as the popularity of her podcast FUCKING CANCELLED grows.
In retrospect, I see that I was moved by Morrigan's writings primarily because they're a clever, zinger-filled repackaging of more genuine and nuanced essays penned by others. Namely, by queer Black folks and other more sophisticated and culturally rooted voices.
When I posted Morrigan's stuff, I had no idea about her partner Jay Manicom's forceful silencing of several BIPOC peers and partners they'd allegedly abused and made no amends to. I didn't realize that Morrigan was publicly weaponizing abolitionist and twelve-step language in order to defend Manicom's alleged ongoing violence and harm. Said harm includes sending legal threats to several survivors, femme PoC, after they'd repeatedly asked him to join them in a circle to hash things out. When these folks spoke out about their experiences, both Manicom and Morrigan were quick to frighten, shame, and silence them. (Even while simultaneously decrying similar acts perpetrated against credibly alleged serial perpetrators! Try to make it make sense!)
Comparing "cancel culture" to the carceral state by using appropriated language and concepts that Black and Indigenous activists have been cultivating and nurturing for centuries is not an approach I want to lend any credibility to. It's DARVO. White femme DARVO. That's messed up.
When a popular, charismatic young white woman, a self-described "powerhouse" and "controversial public figure", goes so far as to compare survivors' requests for basic accountability and community-wide responsibility to "acting like a cop", there's some straight-up pastel Q-Anon dog whistle "Guru Jagat" horseshit goin' down.
Recently, I observed Morrigan on a panel with several other speakers, all healers from various lineages whom I admire and trust. I enjoyed their talks a lot. But in spite of my initial enthusiasm for Morrigan's breezy social media writings, as soon as she launched into her very polished, practiced lip service to radical compassion and acceptance, red flags started popping up for me. BIG Russell Brand energy. (And most of you already know how I feel about THAT righteous broheim. I've been roasting him years.)
Observing Morrigan's onscreen presentation, my curiosity died almost instantly. I won't say I was shocked by her performativity. I did experience rolling waves of nausea. Whether it's a fair assessment or not, I parsed her almost instantly as yet another cult-of-personality cultivator who is using hierarchical tactics to center the comfort and safety of active, unapologetic abusers ahead of everyone else. Not okay. She may have the best intentions in the world, but NO THANK YOU.
Morrigan's particular approach to justice is not what I'm about. If it were, I'd still be hanging out with a whole lot of sketchy af people I met in various green rooms over the years and making a whole lot more money while we all dance together around similar cognitive dissonance in our professional lives as celebrities, pundits, and "righteous" preachers. Again, no thank you.
I wanted to fast-forward through Morrigan's portion of the presentation, but gritted my teeth through it out of respect for the panel's curator. The wild thing is, on paper, I agree with *so much of what she says*! Still, something felt very, very off. So I went and read up further, and finally understood why my heart was sinking, my stomach, churning.
I wholeheartedly respect that the healers who invited Morrigan onto this panel have a different, more generous perception of her. I'm not making this post to demonize or dehumanize Morrigan, her partner, her friends, her listenership, or anyone else who leans into ye olde "hurt people hurt people" tenets in order to make sense of various horrors committed by them or to them.
However, the FUCKING CANCELLED fan club is most assuredly not something I want to give my time, energy, or trust to any more than I would Amanda Palmer's, or Rosie O'Donnell's, or Rose McGowan's, or Lena Dunham's, or Asia Argento's, etc.
My casual shares of Morrigan's work were a mistake. Consider this post a personal retraction. If there are further reparations I should consider, please let me know. Especially if you're a transformative justice buddy who has been quietly observing my promotions of her and feelin' barfy because of it!
Please, please know that I wouldn't have boosted her bandwidth so blithely, had I dug a bit deeper. I hope no one was too hurt or freaked out by my ignorant shares.
My apologies and my love. In solidarity. May all beings be free from suffering. Ashe.

By Bob McCubbin
In Minnie Bruce Pratt, Leslie Feinberg found the profound sensitivity, understanding, and love that had always been elusive in her previous relationships. And Minnie Bruce was herself a courageous fighter, had always been a fighter, had fought the homophobic, transphobic, racist state that took her children from her to punish her for her audacity in coming out publicly at a time and place when and where it was simply outrageous and unacceptable to do so. From the point of view of the racist Southern establishment, she must be punished for being a proud lesbian, a fiercely anti-racist activist, and an outspoken opponent of imperialist war.

So, according to Lily Orchard...
“.All Anime is crap because it’s perv-pandering garbage made by creepy old-men, for disgusting, smelly, body pillow-carrying weeaboos. No exceptions. .All anime inspired video-games are the same because see reasons above. No exceptions (except for Kingdom Hearts and Pokemon because...Sora and Gardevoir babus!). .If you use anime-inspired art or anime references in your works, you are automatically a horrible person AND a Channer-board Neo-Nazi. No exceptions. .Because they uses tons of anime references in their work, creators like Rebecca Sugar are Channer-board Neo-Nazis who get off to drawings of underage kids. So says the leader!”
Seriously, what the hell is it with Lily and her massive hatred for anime as well as Japanese culture? My guess is that-like most misinformed idiots-her only exposure to anime was through “research”; and by “research”, I mean she just looked at a bunch of cherry-picked, out-of-context online screenshots/video clips of fanservicey moments in random anime (including acclaimed classics like Cowboy Bebop, Full Metal Alchemist and others) and decided not only did they represent their entire respective series, but that those same fanservicy moments represented an ENTIRE MEDIUM!
Tumblr media
And of course, the only so-called “anime fans” Lily ever met were 4Chan Neo-Nazis-the ones who defaced her cartoon avatar-and since Lily adores the “Hitler Ate Sugar” fallacy, she has convinced herself that 4Chan Neo-Nazis represent the quality of ALL anime. Once again, Gromit, speak my feelings:
Tumblr media
It’s hilarious  how Western media is filled to the brim with raunchy sexual content (see Belgian, French and Italian comics, "Metal Hurlant" etc.), yet holier-than-thou Helen Lovejoys like Lily barely bat an eye at them. But whenever characters like Feye Valentine, Winry Rockbell and Olivia Mira show the tiniest  bit of skin or sexual liberation, they cry “Weeaboo spankbait! Women and Girls are in danger!! Won’t somebody think of the children!!!” When you step back, you realize this is all just regurgitated “Yellow Peril” rubbish.
In other words...
Lily Orchard is a racist.

While looking for an artist, I came across a show Kathy had been in. She played Lady Capulet in a production set in Central Asia, where the Capulets were Chinese and the Montagues were Russian. Wow! Varsha and Kathy were brilliant together. They showed how Romeo and Juliet, a play many people admire for being a ‘universal’ love story, can explore something like Asian cultures in our present moment – varieties of lived experience, ongoing stereotypes, non-traditional casting, the value of representation in the theatre, diverse styles of storytelling, you name it. By approaching Shakespeare’s play from the perspective of Indian audiences or relocating Romeo and Juliet to a different cultural setting, Varsha and Kathy showed how the play is relevant to diverse audiences.

Midterm Elections 2022
Today, November 8, 2022, is Midterm Election Day! In these elections, many local and state officials are on the ballot. This booklet, Vote and Fight for the Platform of the Socialist Workers Party, was handed out by the Socialist Workers Party (SWP) ahead of the 1946 elections—the first election held after WWII. This is both a voter’s guide to tell readers who they should vote for and a persuasive text about why they should join the SWP. The party has had its struggles over the years but is still active today. The main views espoused in this booklet are anti-racist, anti-fascist, anti-capitalist, and pro-labor. It also lays out the issues of the SWP with the Republican, Democrat, and other active political parties.
There is a lot at stake in this election, so more now than ever, get out there and exercise your right to vote!
This booklet is also a really good example of something printed on terrible wood pulp paper. In the mid-19th century, paper started to be made from wood pulp rather than cotton rags. The problem with this is that wood pulp is more acidic and has shorter fibers than cotton, resulting in paper that is more likely to yellow and become brittle. This booklet is very yellowed and brittle, so much so that I had to use an iPhone to scan the pages rather than our flatbed scanner. Check out the Library of Congress page about paper deterioration and preservation for more info.

I'm begging all BIPOC sapphic people or BIPOC queer people who date women to read Juliet Takes a Breath by Gabby Rivera. There's also a graphic novel and Audiobook. And for my fellow trans and gender diverse people, the opening sounds suspicious but it's later used to show why overly focusing on "pussy power" doesn't make someone a good ally.
The best part of the story is that it teaches you how to not take that as a sign that you are a bad and evil person. But there is an entire community of other women and people who have been through this and understand. With a competent partner you don't just have to be chill about racism and avoid mentioning it because it "ruins the vibe." People who understand that constructive criticism is a part of life and it doesn't mean you hate something or are arguing.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
That allyship isn't just white people flipping out and making situations worse. And plenty of other people have a problem with this behavior; it's not just you. You aren't a bad person for talking about it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
There are so many of us who have gone through this kind of nonsense. Wanting to talk about the racism that affects our daily lives is not something "unfair." White people can and will claim to "set a boundary" when they are stonewalling you; learn the difference. Because the only defense we have against being tokenized is community. This book is a way to understand that, And if you're new to being queer it talks about a lot of that stuff too.
Tw: opening has some catcalling that escalates, but she leaves the situation unharmed.
This is the book I wish I had read before I dated a white person; to know that needing support around racism and holding a white person accountable is not abusive. Now I know how to screen people I consider dating. How to set standards in friendships and relationships. Better friends are out there, better people are out there. Don't settle for people just because you've been told your whole life that you're too much.
