You're getting a two-for-one b/c I have a hard time talking about Eliza Solberg without also mentioning her husband, Aodhan (formerly province of Seoid, clan of O'Cuilinn.)

It is impossible to discuss Eliza's situation without mentioning politics, because Eliza is essentially a politician and through unfortunate birthright, it has become her life's work. Her country, Pais, was a colonial state under a wider Empire for hundreds of years. Eliza's family was one of those selected to be rulers in the Empire's stead, though she was not the ultimate governor of the territory, and instead managed her own territory under a governor selected by the Empire. However, rebellious sentiment had developed in Pais due to religious suppression, excessive tax practices, and -- the straw that broke the camal's back -- a mandatory draft set in place by the Empire to recruit soldiers for a war against another power.

Now, Eliza took control of her father's position at a very young age after his sudden and untimely passing. Due to some of the atrocities she bore witness to as a consequence of her position, along with a genuine belief that the Empire's draft would ruin her country, Eliza was one of the landed nobles who sided with one of the govenor's sons, who deposed him and lead Pais into a war for independence. By the time Eliza was 25, she had endured a trial by fire and committed years of her young-adult life to war.

In the pursuit of this war, Eliza entered into a political engagement with Aodhan Seoid O'Cuilinn, of the Dragon people, whose province's aid she'd been responsible for cultivating and who she'd developed a deep friendship with over a series of letters. When the war was won, they were wed.

Eliza is a calculating woman. Her friendship and ultimate marriage to Aodhan was entirely for political gain. Any affection she had for him -- which did exist, she genuinely likes him -- was unfortunately offset by needing his clan's assistance against a much larger military power.

Aodhan, meanwhile, was stupidly in love.

But also, he knows this about Eliza, and he's completely okay with the idea that she doesn't actually love him. When he made his vows to her, to stay by her side and be a candle in any darkness, he meant it more than he'd meant anything in his life. He loves her in every way, and that love has engendered a loyalty that he intends to carry through the rest of his life with her, even if she never likes him romantically. To him, marriage is choosing someone to stand against the world with, and he'll stand with her until the day he dies.

Eliza, meanwhile, is drowning in guilt that she's so caught up in political intrigue and protecting her country that there isn't really room to develop a romantic relationship with Aodhan. Furthermore, having spent the entirety of her adult life embroiled in conflict, she doesn't even think she knows how to love. In her eyes, she's taking advantage of this man's pure love of her for her own benefit, and she's drowning in the guilt of it all. ...Not that she'll say anything! Lady Solberg is emotionally closed off, and has trouble letting her husband in about... anything.

He sleeps on a hoard of the letters she's written to him. Though she has trouble believing it, he's content with this.
