Hello! RIP to this friend. So it goes. They are a tiger moth in the genus Apantesis, probably a Mexican tiger moth, Apantesis proxima.

Colorado Potato Beetle (Leptinotarsa decemlineata) Parthenice Tiger Moth (Apantesis parthenice), and Spider Wasp (Priocnemis spp.)! My first wasp so far, I couldn't resist the blue. Slowly working myself up to spiders so I can draw them as they deserve! Bugs referenced from INaturalist with photos by brickman and ericgiles respectively, and the Spider Wasp from InsectIdentification.org.

I have decided that I think Valentino is probably an apantesis virgo, aka "virgin tiger moth" (lol the irony)

I’ll start this blog of with one of my favorite finds, a Parthenice Tiger Moth (Apantesis parthenice). I love the pattern on this moth, it looks almost like a skeleton.

hi!! i found this moth a few summers ago and i havent been able to find out what kind it is exactly,,, perhaps you'd know?(also don't worry it was released right after I took the pic)
certainly! it's a tiger moth in the genus Apantesis. i wouldn't hazard a guess of which exact species since there's something like 40 species in north america, most of which look extremely similar. it is possible to narrow it down based on where geographically the moth was found and the specifics of the patterns but that's a bit above my pay grade since moths are one of my weaker groups. i'd wager if you submit it to bugguide or inaturalist with locality info then some lep wizard could help you determine the species
