Day 3 Mon. May 29 Baker City, Oregon to Twin Falls and Idaho Falls, Idaho 700 km

What's become clear is that in order to hit my destinations, I am not going to be able to entirely avoid the Interstates. Case in point, in order to make my 700 km today, I had to take Interstate 84 to Twin Falls. At 80 kph, you don't get much local flavour, and you're certainly not stopping to take pictures. However, you can gather impressions. When I think of Idaho, now I will think of wind turbines, solar farms, transmission lines, irrigation and cattle, cattle, and cattle. I'll also think of the Oregon Trail, which stretches from Missouri to Oregon and 500 miles through Idaho. And always in the distance, scenic mountain ranges, some snow capped, and all sporting fluffy white cloud banks overhead. Without irrigation, it can get pretty brown, but with it, Idaho grows impressive amounts of potatoes, wheat, barley, hay, sugar beets, peas and lentils.

Of the two cities I visited, Twin Falls has a pop of 53,000, Elev. 3,734 ft and is known as the gateway to the Snake River. At its east end, there's Shoshone Falls and at its north Penine Coulee Falls.

Idaho Falls is a city of 66,000, Elev 4,705 ft, and is the commercial, cultural, and healthcare center for eastern Idaho, western Wyoming, and Southern Montana.

I took the scenic route between the two along US 26 and US 20, which took me past the Craters of the Moon, a 600 sq mile lava field that is still regarded as active and likely to erupt again.

I also passed through Arco, apparently the first town in the world to be lighted by atomic power (1955) by the nearby atomic reactors of the 900 square mile Idaho National Laboratory nuclear testing and storage facility. It also sits beneath a mountain covered in the numbers of its graduating classes.

The 18th of July is an anniversary less significant than the Glorious 20th, but we ought not let it pass without being marked.

On that date in 1955, electricity generated from a nuclear reactor was sold to the public for the first time in the USA. This power came from the Submarine Intermediate Reactor prototype (installed in the USS Seawolf, this type of reactor proved unsatisfactory and was abandoned), built by General Electric at West Milton, New York. This was almost simultaneous with the experiment at Arco, Idaho, where the whole town was powered from the Atomic Energy Commission’s experimental boiling-water reactor, BORAX-V.

In this video clip, I read the speech made on that occasion by Admiral Lewis Strauss, Chairman of the Atomic Energy Committee. Intriguingly, he foreshadows the “Megatons to Megawatts” program, which provided about 10% of US electricity for 20 years from decommissioned Soviet nuclear weapons.

Before me stands a large two-way switch. If I throw its blade in one direction, it will turn the propellor shaft of a military weapon. But when I throw it in the other direction ― as I am about to do ― it will send atomic electric power surging through transmissions lines to towns and villages, farms and factories… to make life easier, healthier, and more abundant. This switch is a symbol of the great dilemma of our times. I throw it now to the side of the peaceful atom!

Fumes from wildfires in Canada engulfed the skies over much of the East Coast in June, turning the air a hazy orange and prompting serious air quality alerts in over a dozen states.

A submersible carrying five people vanished while on a tour of the Titanic wreckage off the coast of Newfoundland, Canada, sparking a desperate, dayslong search that captivated the nation.

The 21-foot deep-sea vessel Titan, operated by OceanGate Expeditions, lost contact about an hour and 45 minutes after submerging on June 18 with a 96-hour oxygen supply. Among the five people onboard was OceanGate CEO Stockton Rush.

On June 22, officials said they determined that the deep-sea vessel had imploded underwater, killing all five people on board.

The Coast Guard determined the Titan suffered a "catastrophic implosion." The Titan was found in pieces by a remotely operated vehicle on a smooth section of ocean floor more than 2 miles beneath the surface.

Gilgo Beach arrest

On July 13, a 59-year-old New York City architect who lived with his wife and children on Long Island was arrested in the mysterious Gilgo Beach murders that had haunted New York for over a decade.

Rex Heuermann was charged with the murders of three sex workers, Melissa Barthelemy, Megan Waterman and Amber Costello, whose bodies were found on Long Island in 2010. He has pleaded not guilty.

Heuermann’s DNA allegedly linked him to the crimes, prosecutors said.

Heuermann allegedly used a burner phone "to conduct thousands of searches related to sex workers, sadistic, torture-related pornography and child pornography," court records said.

Other searches were "related to active and known serial killers," and the disappearances of the Gilgo Beach victims. One search, according to court records, was, "Why hasn't the Long Island serial killer been caught."

Heuermann is also the prime suspect in the death of a fourth woman, Maureen Brainard-Barnes, who vanished in 2007, though he has not been charged in that case.

A large portion of West Maui, Hawaii, was obliterated when wildfires ignited on Aug. 8, killing nearly 100 people.

Factors such as high winds, a landscape parched by drought and fire hydrants that ran dry exacerbated the quick spread of the wildfires and the inability of firefighters to put them out.

Lahaina, the island’s historic district and the location of the former Kingdom of Hawaii, was at the center of the destruction. The town's historic banyan tree was singed in the blaze.

Displaced West Maui residents are still living in hotels elsewhere on the island -- in many instances adjacent to paying guests.

The environmental cleanup and rebuilding process on Maui will take years, experts told ABC News.

A battle over water rights is also brewing as Native Hawaiians fight to protect their ancestral lands.

Convicted murderer escapes from Pennsylvania prison

On Aug. 31, convicted murderer Danelo Cavalcante escaped from a Pennsylvania prison, leading authorities on a massive two-week manhunt until he was captured.

Cavalcante broke out of the Chester County Prison just days after being sentenced to life without parole in the fatal stabbing of his ex-girlfriend.

Cavalcante escaped by first scaling a wall in an exercise yard to gain access to the roof, according to a criminal complaint obtained by ABC News. He then pushed his way through razor wire, ran across the prison roof, scaled more razor wire and jumped down to a less secure area to make his getaway, officials said.

Hundreds of officers joined the manhunt, during which Cavalcante was spotted multiple times.

Cavalcante allegedly stole a gun from a home while he was on the run.

On Sept. 13, Cavalcante was captured in South Coventry Township, about 30 miles from Chester County Prison.

Cavalcante is facing new charges in connection with the escape.

Maine mass shooting

Eighteen people were killed and 13 others were injured in a mass shooting in Lewiston, Maine, on Oct. 25. The shootings unfolded in two locations: a bowling alley where a children's league was taking place and a local bar.

In the wake of the massacre, grieving and shocked residents of Lewiston and neighboring towns were forced to shelter inside as authorities launched a massive manhunt for the suspect, Robert Card.

Card evaded capture for two days before he was found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound on Oct. 27.

Card, a 40-year-old Army Reservist who had no combat deployments, had a well-documented series of warning signs that his psychological state was on a sharp decline in the months leading up to the shootings.

His immediate family members raised concerns to police in May that Card had begun to exhibit paranoid delusions and claimed people were saying "derogatory" things about him while out in public and that he was growing increasingly "angry and paranoid" through the spring.

Card was institutionalized for two weeks in July for psychological treatment and evaluation during a stay at West Point in New York, after it became clear to his fellow soldiers that his mental state was deteriorating. He was released after 14 days. The Army said it then directed Card’s commander that he "should not have a weapon, handle ammunition, and not participate in live fire activity."

In mid-September, Card's training supervisor wrote a worried letter to local law enforcement requesting a welfare check on Card, who he refers to as one of his senior firearms instructors, noting that Card had been "hearing voices" and it had "only gotten worse."

This is our last stop in [untitled] e.p. and it's a short one. It's also the last track on this album, so it has that calm, closer energy.

Brand new bright lights of Arco, Idaho go dim One delusion runs its course, its companion thereupon begins

Obviously, the first line doesn't have much to offer in a TLT context, except for a general idea of lights going dim–literally near the end of Nona the Ninth when shit starts to hit the fan. The second line, though, is very book 2 Harrow.

Old ghost white face of impatience wearing thin Casting quiet curses as of course they came back round again In spite of wonders, disbelief

The first two lines are very much the Body haunting Harrow. The last line is a paraphrase of a Psalm and I'm not quite sure how I want to read it in a TLT context. There are plenty of wonders in this universe from necromany to Lyctorhood, yet there's also plenty of disbelief, especially as the truth of the universe starts to unfold. There's the wonder of Jod resurrecting everyone and the disbelief that he is the gentle King Undying.

We spent our nights climbing towers built on songs From the obsolete inscriptions of the sons of Babylon Were you not carved among the hunters and their king W/ their chests adorned in necklace & their arms like falcon wings?

These lines invoke the story of the Tower of Babel from the Old Testament, where the people built a huge tower to reach heaven and then God confused all their languages. In a TLT context, this could refer to the slow revelation that this series is a post-Earth story. All of the oldest things in this universe are from before the Resurrection and their meaning is confused/obscured because Jod and his Lyctors don't want anyone knowing about it. "Obsolete inscriptions" can refer to any number of things in this universe that come from or reference the old universe.

Then we have this figure being "carved among the hunters and their king" and my first thought is Alecto, but it could also apply to others in this series who are created by some means other than birth in the way we typically understand it. Harrow, arguably, could be someone who is carved into being.

Were you not forged in grief Avenging lions in the alabaster bas-relief? Kristy with the Sparkling Teeth!

This first line hits many so many aspects of TLT. All Lyctors ultimately are forged in grief. Paul is forged in grief. Nona is forged in grief (and has sparkling teeth). This entire universe is forged in grief of Earth's destruction.

Apparently, "Kristy" is a character/persona that one of Aaron Weiss' young nieces invented, so this song ends with this idea of a childlike persona forged in grief, and again, if that isn't Nona, then I don't know what is.
