Water to the world -  cg photography
It always amazed me to sit on this dock behind the house and realize that if set sail from here in Northeast Oklahoma I could sail to Norway, Japan, Australia, the Caribbean. This is back water to the McClellan-Kerr Navigation system, which is the Arkansas River going into the Mississippi river going into the Gulf of Mexico going into the Atlantic Ocean which is connected also to the Pacific, Indian, Artic, and Southern Ocean. The key to world travel lay at the end of the dock!

10 Breathtaking Canoe Trails for an Unforgettable Adventure
Finding isolation may be as simple as packing up a canoe, setting out and casting a line into the bush without having to wear a heavy pack or travel for ten kilometers. Everything you need for a canoe journey is in a boat with you, so you do not have to worry about trying to squeeze past others on a crowded route or carrying heavy water containers. You can end yourself falling in true love with canoeing after taking a few journeys.
Tumblr media
10 Best Canoe Trails
This list is not comprehensive. These best canoe camping trips USA are a fantastic place to start, but there are just too many beautiful spots to paddle & not enough time.
Boundary Waters, USA
On the boundary of the Canadian province both of Ontario and the US state of Minnesota, you will find the first canoeing location in this list. It is a safeguarded wilderness region with excellent animal viewing opportunities, making it the perfect place to go canoeing! After one day of paddling, you may rest and unwind at one of the roughly 2,000 distinct camp sites in the wilderness region!
Buffalo National River
Tumblr media
Over 130 miles of canoeing are available on the Buffalo National River in the Ozark Mountains of Arkansas, which is suited for both novice and experienced paddlers. Both tranquil and rougher waters may be found in the river. Given the correct weather and season, it is possible to paddle the whole river in around ten days. Plan your trip according to the season since during dry weather the water levels drop too low to properly paddle the whole river.
Northern Forest Canoe Trail
Tumblr media
This kayaking adventure is not for timid. It takes about a month to travel the 740 miles of Northern Forest Canoe Trail that crosses both Canada and the United States. Huge lakes, rough rapids, tranquil streams, and the odd portage—a road for moving your canoe from a stream to the next—can all be seen along the trail.
Current River
A panorama of lush, southern woodlands and numerous caverns may be seen from Current River, which is situated in Missouri's Ozark Mountains. If you want to go kayaking while taking in the autumn foliage, Current River is truly a fantastic option. All abilities of paddlers may safely use the river, however it is important to note that the upper river has choppier water that is preferred by experienced paddlers. Even the most difficult rapids are not so dangerous, although occasionally dangerous situations might arise due to the river's powerful current.
Bois Brule River
The Bois Brule River is located in Brule River State Forest, which is 45 minutes by car from Duluth, Minnesota. The 44-mile river section is a well-liked spot for canoeing and passes through a range of environments, from bogs to the boreal woods. The river may be paddled lazily for the most part, although there are certain spots where the water gets choppy. For novices, the upper river always is suggested.
Everglades National Park
Paddlers have essentially limitless options in Florida's Everglades. 10,000 distinct islands, innumerable mangroves, and a maze of waterways may all be found in the Everglades. Setting a camp on one of these islands & exploring the nearby rivers is all it takes to paddle through the Everglades. Animals including herons, dolphins, alligators, & bears have all been spotted in the wild. This will be one amid the best adventure vacations in USA.
Green River
While the paddling here is not difficult, maintaining your focus on the water could be. Labyrinth Canyon & Stillwater Canyon are two of the 120 miles of the Green River that pass through deep, red gorges and provide views of amazing rock formations. If Labyrinth Canyon is your preferred route, start at the Green River State Park & finish around 50 miles later in Mineral Bottom. The canyon walls increase steeper as you float through them over the following several days, and during the evening you will see bighorn sheep. To go into the canyon, you must get a permission from the Bureau of Land Management.
Bowron Lakes
In the Canadian Rockies' Cariboo Mountains region, there are 72 miles of the connected rivers, lakes and portages. The canoe circuit of Bowron Provincial Park truly is well-known across the world (in fact, all three of the testimonials on the website of a local outfitter are from Europeans). The Bowron canoeing adventure includes backcountry campsites, an abundance of animals, mountains, woods, and deep, clear lakes. For the entire circuit, allow 7–10 days. Gold Lake- The tranquilly you seek can be found at Gold Lake if you prefer a laid-back canoe or kayak journey. Gold Lake is one of California's top family campgrounds, and it is 9 miles southwest of the Graegale, California, amid the picturesque foothills of the Sierra. Gold Lake is a great place for the entire family to have fun because there are 20 smaller lakes close by and a variety of recreational opportunities.
Wekiva Island
Wekiva Island though is not an island in the true sense,it does provides a relaxed haven both for friends & families alike in search for a place to gather along Wekiva River. The Wekiva Island located in Central Florida gives water lovers assorted family-friendly activities all along the beautiful Wekiva River. Should you desire in exploring this 16-mile river through your own paddles, then carry your own, else you may hire a kayak or canoe from the oasis too.
Canoeing is an excellent means of fitness and outdoor recreation for people of every age & skill level. Where will you be paddling next among the tens of thousands of best canoe trips USA that exist across the country?

Cotapaxi, Colorado
Tumblr media
We have wanted to return to the Salida, Colorado area ever since last there. We thought we had the perfect opportunity. Well, we were in Salida three times this past week, but while our trip was really nice (and an escape from the heat and storms of home), it turned out to be Cotopaxi based. Had it been actually in Salida, we could have ventured to places of our dreams and memories. Instead, we were an hour drive from Salida, which included 25 minutes of climbing 3000 feet of twisty dirt road.
Tumblr media
Our stay was at 9000 feet in a very nice house with great views, as you could imagine. It was our first “off grid” house sit which was initially a bit concerning, but that fact turned out to need only small adjustment. No worries, especially for only one week.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Welsh Terrier we house sat for was great, the first dog we considered bringing home with us. Fergus barked only when he had chipmunks cornered out in the boulder-strewn yard. But he prob’ly would have really barked at the 500-600 lb bear that lumbered across the road 50’ in front of us down the road (in the car).
Regarding the storms we left behind, we had to leave home with the electric power having been off for two days and not restored until a day after we were gone. And power went out again for another day during our absence. We lost all our cold and frozen stuff, but the fridge is fine. (We emptied it before leaving, pre-empting the nasty mess of 1.5 weeks of food sitting in a hot box.) What we’d given neighbors, they lost as well. Oh well. We tried.
The mountains in Colorado were spectacular. The trails were great. The food was good, except for Wayne’s turkey sandwich that was seasoned with ammonia (okay, maybe it was horse-radish). He ate most of it while bawling his eyes out. (Note from Debbie: his eyes instantly went red as fire and he said his whole scalp “tingled.”) Debbie’s sandwich that day was chicken salad on stiff bread that was difficult to manage but at least I didn’t have smoke coming from my ears.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
We still dream of returning to Salida. The Arkansas River is at its rowdy toddler stage there and whitewater rafting is big business this season. The river rushes through incredible scenery … mountains of many colors and textures. Calendar pictures around every bend in the road which was constructed for maximum views of the waterway that is unrecognizable from itself as a utilitarian, barge-carrying river back at home. But this trip, though it didn’t satisfy our desire for a favorite city’s charms, gave us whole new areas to covet for future returns. Colorado is one of our top Happy Places.

Jasper arkansas
Tumblr media
Newton County as a whole mostly supported the Union however, in 1863, while searching for Cecil, Union troops burned Jasper to the ground and moved their sympathizers to Springfield, Missouri.Īfter the Civil War, Jasper became a boomtown. John Cecil, former sheriff of Newton County, was known for showing off his twin pearl-handled pistols he had worn as a guerrilla leader for the Confederacy. James Vanderpool was a Union hero who returned home in August 1865. The county produced two famous leaders, fighting for different causes. The Civil War brought strife to this isolated community. Between 18, Ross served in several posts for the town, including postmaster, storekeeper, county clerk, and county judge. On December 14, 1842, Governor Archibald Yell signed legislation creating Newton County from land in Carroll County. By 1843, Ross had relocated his family to Jasper, where he became the first postmaster and established another trading post. In 1839, Ross moved his wife and baby from Ohio to Clarksville (Johnson County), where he established a trading post on the Arkansas River. Settlers began moving to the area as early as 1825, according to census records made in 1850. Yet another account states that postmaster John Ross coined the name by comparing the mellow color of the local stone to jasper, one of the twelve precious stones mentioned in Revelation. A second version of this same story tells of a precious ring, containing a jasper stone, given to the postmaster in gratitude for care given to the Cherokee travelers. One oft-repeated legend says that Cherokee Indians traveling west on the torturous Trail of Tears gave the town its name after being surprised by the village’s warm hospitality. Louisiana Purchase through Early StatehoodĪt least three different stories are told about the origin of the name Jasper. Today, it is the hub for outdoor enthusiasts enjoying the Buffalo National River, one of the last free-flowing waterways in the United States, and the Ozark Highland Trail. Jasper was established as a village along the Little Buffalo River by 1840.

The Atchafalaya National Heritage Area in southern Louisiana is rich with wildlife, cultural history, and Cajun food. It’s one of many parks in the southern U.S. offering adventure and fascinating glimpses into Native and colonial history. Photograph By TyroneTurner, National Geographic Image Collection
— By Stephanie Pearson | May 16, 2022
Parks are places of refuge, reflection, conservation, and community. The new National Geographic book 100 Great American Parks highlights some of the nation’s greatest natural and cultural treasures.
Established in 1916, the U.S. National Park Service manages more than 420 units (including 63 national parks) across 85 million acres. Some parks protect precious and vulnerable habitats, some serve as reminders of important events from our history, and others provide a serene space for visitors. Some are, admittedly, loose definitions of the word “park.” Those include historical sites, wildlife refuges, and congressionally designated wilderness areas. But each place has the potential to inspire.
Tumblr media
These six parks in the American South reveal surprising natural and social histories of spectacular places in Louisiana, Arkansas, North Carolina, Georgia, Florida, and beyond. Visitors to parks here are rewarded with vivid stories of Indigenous heritage, civil rights heroes, and ecological marvels.

Atchafalaya National Heritage Area
Visit a biodiverse region rich in cultural history. Louisiana’s Atchafalaya National Heritage Area highlights the Atchafalaya Basin, stretching across 14 of the state’s 64 parishes. It contains ancient oaks and towering cypresses along bayous, swamps, and backwater lakes, all centered around the Atchafalaya River, from the Choctaw words hacha falaia, or “long river.”
The cultural history of Atchafalaya is as complex as its waterways, starting 6,000 to 2,500 years ago, when the first Native Americans lived along natural levees and bayous of what was once the traditional Mississippi River floodplain. During the 1700s, the French arrived in the Atchafalaya Basin to trade furs with its Indigenous inhabitants and launch raids into their tribal areas to capture and enslave them.
Starting in 1703, roughly 3,000 Acadians from present-day Nova Scotia arrived after being exiled by the British. By 1718, most of the region’s Native American population had diminished, decimated by diseases brought by the outsiders and continuous warfare.
The Cajuns, descendants of the Acadians, are still the dominant culture in the Atchafalaya. But the region’s food, music, and traditions have been heavily influenced by the Native American, Spanish, French, Caribbean, African, and Acadian people who have lived here over the centuries.
Gumbo is synonymous with Cajun country and serves as a metaphor for the zone’s melding of cultures. It is derived from the word nkombo, Bantu for “okra,” a vegetable the Portuguese originally brought to America. Another key ingredient is filé, which is Native American in origin and made from ground sassafras leaves. The dish’s soup-like consistency is derived from a French bouillabaisse.

Buffalo National River
Explore a beloved river at the center of a conservation struggle. Buffalo River in Arkansas is the United States’ first national river, a designation that protects it from industrial uses and other obstructions that would alter the natural character of the waterway. The 135-mile-long national river portion features dramatic limestone and sandstone bluffs, more than 500 caves, 100-plus miles of hiking and horseback riding trails, and 12 species of game fish.
Buffalo National River’s designation did not come easily. In 1938, when Congress passed the Flood Control Act authorizing civil engineering projects like dams, dikes, and levees, the Army Corps of Engineers immediately began eyeballing the Buffalo’s hydroelectric potential and planned for two massive dams along its length. Conservationists forcefully rallied against the plan and, in an effort to bring attention to the issue, they took Supreme Court Justice William O. Douglas canoeing down the Buffalo.
The debate finally came to a head in 1965, when Arkansas Governor Orval Faubus refused to back the plan. Seven years later, Congress voted to establish Buffalo as the country’s first national river. Today there are 100 miles of wild, scenic, and recreational rivers across the country, inclusive of 209 protected rivers in 40 states and Puerto Rico.
Despite its protected status, the Buffalo is still vulnerable. In 2019, the nonprofit American Rivers ranked it as the eighth-most endangered river in the country due to the presence of a 6,500-head hog farm known as a concentrated animal feeding operation (CAFO) sitting on a hill above Big Creek, one of the river’s main tributaries. In June 2019, the state reached an agreement with the hog farm to close the facility and Governor Asa Hutchinson announced a permanent moratorium on industrial-scale farms operating in the watershed.

Cape Hatteras National Seashore
From pirates to the Civil War, this seashore has seen it all. Crashing surf, a secluded beach, and a cool dip in the Atlantic are what many visitors to North Carolina’s Outer Banks seek. The three sandy islands—Bodie, Hatteras, and Ocracoke—parts of which make up Cape Hatteras National Seashore, offer this peaceful repose. They also provide refuge for five species of sea turtles, nesting colonies of shorebirds, and a herd of Banker ponies. Legend has it that the ponies descend from animals shipwrecked sailors abandoned in the 16th or 17th century.
The history of the Outer Banks is a centuries-long string of harrowing tales of shipwreck and war. The water off the coast, known as the “Graveyard of the Atlantic,” has been the site of more than 600 shipwrecks, due to a “perfect storm” of deadly factors including the infamous Diamond Shoals, a bank of constantly shifting sandbars underwater. In order to take advantage of the currents, ships must sail close to the Outer Banks and risk the consequences.
Edward Teach, the pirate known as Blackbeard, terrorized the waters off the Outer Banks in the early 1700s. Ocracoke Inlet was Teach’s favorite anchorage. After a ferocious battle there in 1718, Teach and several of his crew were killed by Royal Navy Lieutenant Robert Maynard and his men.
During the Civil War, the islands were used as battlefields. Whoever controlled them, and the surrounding sounds, would ultimately control North Carolina. By the summer of 1862, a Union victory on Roanoke Island secured eastern North Carolina for the Union Army. Almost a century later, during World War II, German U-boats lurked offshore to wait for passing ships, illuminated by lights onshore.
The area is facing significant erosion affecting the stability of homes along the shore. Large-scale storm events, a result of climate change, have wreaked havoc on the coastline in recent years.
To counter the perilous sea, many light stations were constructed along the Outer Banks, including the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse. At 198 feet, the iconic black-and-white-striped structure, designed and built between 1868 and 1870, is still the tallest brick light tower in the U.S.

Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historical Park
Learn about civil rights history and the heroes who advanced equality. Centered around a few city blocks on Atlanta, Georgia’s Auburn Avenue—the once thriving heart of the city’s Black community known as Sweet Auburn—the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historical Park highlights the most formative spaces in the young King’s life.
From the day he was born until the age of 12, King lived at 501 Auburn Avenue in an 1895 Queen Anne-style house that his maternal grandfather, Reverend Adam Daniel Williams, bought for $3,500 from its white owners in 1909. The two-story house, with intricate scroll-cut wood trim and a front porch, was a bustling place: King shared the home with his grandparents, parents, two siblings, and an occasional border.
Ebenezer Baptist Church, just down the block from King’s childhood home, was perhaps the most influential space in his life. His grandfather became the church’s pioneering second pastor in 1894, preaching a social gospel of Black business development and civil rights. When he died in 1931, King’s father, Michael, a powerful patriarch and fierce preacher, became the head pastor. King, Jr., joined his father as co-pastor in 1959 and served at the church until his death. Of Ebenezer, King, Jr., once said, “My best friends were in Sunday School, and it was the Sunday School that helped me to build the capacity for getting along with people.”
The International Civil Rights Walk of Fame, located on a promenade leading to the park’s visitors center, features granite markers with the embedded footprints of human rights icons including Rosa Parks, Desmond Tutu, Congressman John Lewis, and Sidney Poitier.
The park is also the final resting place of King and his wife, Coretta Scott King. A four-hour drive southwest to Alabama is the Selma to Montgomery National Historic Trail, where King led nonviolent supporters of all races to fight for the Black right to vote.

Gulf Islands National Seashore
History echoes in this coastal region, but environmental threats loom. Stretching 160 miles from Florida’s Santa Rosa Island in the east to Mississippi’s Cat Island in the west, Gulf Islands National Seashore spans two states, including seven islands and portions of the mainland. Its 13 unique areas range from historic forts predating the Civil War to wilderness beaches of white quartz sand accessible only by boat.
Florida’s Pensacola Bay, with its deep water and protected harbor, has long been considered the most important ship anchorage on the northern Gulf Coast. As such, Fort Pickens, designed to protect the bay and the Pensacola Naval Yard, was purposely built to look massive and intimidating. On the west end of Santa Rosa Island, the fort could hold more than 200 cannons and unleash fire from a maximum of 1,000 soldiers when under a siege.
This area also played a critical role in making beaches accessible to all, regardless of race. Jim Crow laws in the South made many beaches off-limits to Black families. As a result, many Black children drowned because they swam in unsupervised or unsafe waters. To change these laws, Dr. Gilbert Mason, Sr., led peaceful “wade-ins,” similar to restaurant “sit-ins,” into Gulf of Mexico waters off beaches near Biloxi. Many of the protests were met with violence, but in 1968, the Justice Department finally prevailed in opening these public beaches to all.
In many ways, Gulf Islands is a dreamy, idyllic destination, thriving with shorebirds and sea turtles and echoes of American history. A variety of animals make their nests and homes there, including 12 threatened or endangered species, such as the Gulf sturgeon and West Indian manatee.
But the seashore has also been under increasing human- and climate-induced pressure: In 2010, the Deepwater Horizon spill resulted in gobs of oil and tar washing on the sand, resulting in a fishing and swimming ban. Intense hurricanes, most recently Zeta and Sally, have wreaked havoc on roads and infrastructure. The delicate dance between man and nature is fully on display across these islands.

Cumberland Island National Seashore
Visit a storied Black settlement on a fragile barrier island. The shifting sand dunes, salt marshes, maritime forests, and miles of unspoiled beaches of Cumberland Island National Seashore on Georgia’s largest and southernmost barrier island echo with ghosts from the past.
For centuries, people have inhabited this 18-mile-long island, from its original Indigenous residents to the Timucua people and Spanish missionaries and to formerly enslaved Blacks to wealthy industrialists.
At the northern tip of the island, from where the ferry disembarks at Sea Camp, are the last remaining relics from the Settlement. It was a community established in the late 1800s by Black residents, some of whom were born into enslavement and freed after the Civil War. One of the last buildings standing is the one-room First African Baptist Church, built in 1893. It served an essential role in the community not only as a place of worship and fellowship, but also as a schoolhouse.
The wildly varied human history is juxtaposed with what is now a wilderness where wild turkeys, armadillos, and feral horses run free. With 17 miles of undeveloped beach, Cumberland Island is an ideal nesting area for loggerhead sea turtles, a federally threatened species. Each year the island accounts for 25 to 30 percent of the statewide nesting total. In 2019, 1,018 turtle nests were recorded, most of which belonged to loggerheads.

Something I’ve really gotten into during my hiatus from tumblr is kayak fishing. I’ve absolutely fallen in love with getting out on my boat and just enjoying the peace and quiet that comes with being on the water. I only marginally care if I catch anything. Obviously it’s a better day when I do, but for me it’s the time spent away from the crowds and the noise that I’m really after. A big plus for me is that my wife and son also enjoy going out with me. Now if I can just get my girls into it....

COVID-19 Reading Log pt. 10
Tumblr media
51. The Field Guide to the Cryptids of North America by Dr. Courtney A. Shepherd. This book is trash. I enjoy cryptid writings because I like monsters, even if I don’t believe in their literal existence. This book spends about 1/3 its length whining about how scientists don’t take cryptozoology seriously, then the back 2/3rds misquoting scientific literature and making shit up. In addition to including known hoaxes like the Ozark Howler and Lone Pine Mountain Devil without context, the book invents its own cryptids! The Arkansas Creeper is something of a freshwater octopus type, and the Texarkana Mud Dragon is a lobster-sized flightless cicada. Neither of them appears in any source other than this. The only nice thing I can say for it is its original illustrations are good, but there’s only a handful of them compared to the public domain clip art.
Tumblr media
52. History’s Worst Decisions by Stephen Weir. The Field Guide to the Cryptids of North America was bad, but this book is worse. It purports to be a historical account of bad decisions in history, but the first two being wholly legendary events (the Garden of Eden and the Trojan War) immediately made me dubious. The remaining content combines armchair hindsight, Eurocentric distortions and outright lies. When I reached the chapter claiming that Napoleon would have turned around during his failed invasion of Russia if not for him being infuriated upon reading a rough draft of Frankenstein (?!?), I made the only good decision I could with this book. I stopped reading it. This is the only book I’ve given up on for this project so far.
Tumblr media
53. Heaven and Hell: A History of the Afterlife by Brad D. Ehrman. This book of religious history looks at the Western tradition of the afterlife and how it develops over the course of the Bible. The text is arranged roughly chronologically, beginning with the view of the afterlife in the Old Testament, where it primarily appears in apocalyptic literature, through its development in the Gospels of the New Testament and the writings of Paul, up to the development of Purgatory and other post-Biblical Christian thinking. The book’s author inserts his own history into the mix, having been an Evangelical Christian in his youth before losing his zeal and, eventually faith. The book is a good historical look at the development of various books in the Biblical canon, although I’m not sure I agree 100% with his interpretation of Revelation. But what else is new for Revelation? It’s the most debated Scripture for a reason.
Tumblr media
54. Beyond Boggy Creek by Lyle Blackburn. I was in the mood for a good cryptid book after the disappointment of The Field Guide to the Cryptids of North America. Lyle Blackburn knows how to weave a good yarn, and this book is full of reports of the Southern Bigfoot, which is typically smaller, more associated with waterways and decidedly more violent than the Bigfoot of the Pacific Northwest. Of course, Blackburn is a true believer, and sees these differences as possible species distinctions as opposed to differences in folkloric traditions. At least he has the good sense to point out when some stories are rather far-fetched, or come from dubious internet sources. Of note, the book could have used another editing pass—homonym mistakes (vein/vane/vain) and word choice errors (decedent instead of descendant) are prevalent enough that I noticed them. At one point, a Bigfoot is reported to have an estimated height of 7.5 inches tall instead of feet; remarkable, but not in the way I suspect the author intended.
Tumblr media
55. The Dawn of the Deed by John Long. In the same vein as The Ape in the Tree, this book is a blow-by-blow account of a research project by a paleontologist. In this case, that project was the discovery of intromittent organs and internal fertilization in placoderm fish. Hence the title—the “deed” is, of course, the first penetrative sex recorded in vertebrates. Like The Ape in the Tree, it stresses how much hard work it is to do science, although this book focuses less on field work and more on laboratory work and fossil preparation. That’s about the first half of the book. The second half is a whirlwind tour of sexual behavior and anatomy in various animals, and this is weaker than the material that preceded it, being more superficial and less detailed. The tone is light and readable, with lots of weird analogies and jokey asides. It’s the first biology book I’ve read with a reference to Andy Warhol’s Flesh for Frankenstein, and I’d bet money that it’s going to be the last.
