Throne of Glass bad things I guess. This is a list of bad things that happened to Aelin starting when she was 8 to 18. This contains extreme spoilers so yeah.
Aelin 1. When she was 8 her parents, family, and everyone she carried about died. Then Marion made a sacrifice for her, which might have been what she carried with her most because she felt like it was a pointless sacrifice, she almost didn’t get away. Aelin’s biggest weakness is arguably her loyalty to her friends, she would do anything for them do anything to keep them safe. One reason I believe this is because of is Marion’s sacrifice. She doesn’t want anyone else to make these sacrifices for her. She only barely got away because of the wyrdkey around her neck and Elena. Then of course Arobynn found her and took her in. Because someone wants to kill her, (she doesn’t know who at that point) and because she is the princess to be queen of Terrasen, Arobynn gives her the name Celaena Sardothein, and raises her as an assassin. This it’s self is another thing on the list, because she wished to become a healer.
2. Her training with Arobynn was nothing outside of torture, with Arobynn’s brutal methods one was to get her able to use a weapon easily with either hand, he had her break her own wrist. All of this led her to become the best assassin ever, (Adarlan’s Assassin) though she still vowed never to kill anyone from Terrasen. This went on for ten years.
3. just before she turned 17 She went on a mission to skulls bay, where she found out about Arobynn’s business in slave trades. Of course, Aelin being Aelin, she released the slaves and when she came back to the Assassin’s keep, Arobynn beat her and sent her packing to the Silent Assassins. And then of course when she got back (she turned 18 over the time) Arobynn pulled another lie on her and got her an avocation to kill this ‘slave dealer’ who turned out to actually be someone trying to save slaves. Aelin was crushed with this news, it was easily enough to convince her to use the money she’d gotten from the mute master to free herself from Arobynn. This brings up another thing he did, paying for her to have the best training, the best clothes, food, whatever she wanted, then turned around and said that she had to pay him back for all of this, and until then, she was bound to him. He also did this to Sam, his second favorite young assassin. (Aelin had to sell her horse to get the money to free him of his dept)
4. Sam died. Aelin and Sam now away from the Assassin’s keep couldn’t find and contracts, until they agreed to go after one of the most dangerous people in Adarlan, Rourke Farran. Sam walked right into a trap and was tortured and killed by Farran. This broke Aelin. The first person she had found since the downfall of Terrasen that she actually loved died, was killed, she failed him. She could barely move when she found out, then deciding to inflict her revenge on Rourke she jumped into Arobynn’s trap, and was sent to Endovier, where she worked as a slave.
5. Endovier, is a torture camp set up by the king of adarlan. Aelin was tortured there for a year, only trying to break free once, on the anniversary of her parents death. All of these events in Aelin’s life take place before the events of Throne of Glass, another thing to notice is I basically did a run through of Aelin’s life up to Endovier starting at Terrasens diminish. Yeah, Aelin doesn’t have the best life. But these events are what shape her as a character, they outline her loyalty and felt responsibility to her friends, and show what she had to go through. Another thing she carried is the ten years she was with the assassins, she wasn’t doing anything for Terrasen. She was the rightful queen of Terrasen, and felt like for those years she abandoned it, while others fought for it.
if you read to the end I’m surprised but thanks!!! This is my show of how I can’t seriously discuss things, I’m considering doing more of these with the other characters and finish going through the rest of the bad things in Aelin’s life. If you think I should please tell me that in the comments!!

Rating Maasverse Names Part 2
Arobynn - 1/10
The letter Y is a red flag in fantasy names. A powerful tool so often overused. Any other spelling of this name would be better. Aroben, araben, eroben, eraben, ariben. Nothing is gained from spelling it the quirky way.
Azriel - 9/10
Closest Sarah has ever gotten to a reasonable fantasy name. It's simple, pronounceable, but still has flavor. Good job thumbs up whatever. Point off because it sounds like an angel from the hit CW show Supernatural.
Cain - 5/10
Ok after the first two this is just unoriginal. Yeah let's name our bad guy after the first murder in the bible because nobody will ever guess he's the villain if I do that. Also what was I JUST saying about Supernatural??? Yeah overall blah.
Cassian - 7/10
Don't hate it. Reminds me of Star Wars. Good thing Rogue 1 came out after ACOMAF i guess. Not very fantasy if you ask me. And again, is miss sarah a supernatural fan perchance? Cas? Really?
Cerridwen - 10/10
Ok this was originally at 8/10. At first I didn't like it so much but it's growing on me. It's giving Tolkien in a good way. Like Celeborn and Arwen mixed together. She could be a part of the fam. I don't even mind that it's so long or the double Rs. Too bad she's completely irrelevant to the plot and appears like twice in each book.

i really like how all the characters in the assassin's blade returned later in the series. i feel like most prequels were published after the series, but the prequel for throne of glass wasn't. the assassin's blade wasn't just a prequel providing some context about celaena/aelin's backstory or simply some of her adventures, but an introduction to some characters from celeaena/aelin's past who return and have importance to the plot. ansel, who i originally dismissed as just a character who was meant to affect celaena/aelin's character development, came back as the queen of the wastes and an ally to aelin. i thought aelin's trip to the red desert was supposed to be for a mentor type of experience and for her to discover a little bit of honor and morals she has left. in reality, it was also meant to introduce the reader to the silent assassins, provide a bit of backstory, and give a reason why they had a life debt owed to aelin. i think sarah j. maas plans out the plot very well and has so much foreshadowing i (stupidly) dismiss.

I’m prepared and yet not. Ready to get ripped to shreds. Much like in real life, SJM reminds me that you should never trust a man. They either hurt you or die and there is no inbetween.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The fire wouldn't come.
Aelin knew it could, and she knew that it had, and it wasn't. It wasn't coming. No matter how hard she tried, no matter how many breathing or grounding exercises or how many mental doors she unlocked, her fire would not come.
Perhaps it sensed the danger lurking in the red-haired man across the training yard and refused to bend to the cold cunning in his eyes.
Aelin had been sixteen years old when Arobynn Hamel became the weapons master, and he'd been trying to train her in magic ever since, even though he had no magic and knew nothing about the finicky, delicate art of magical training. He'd seemed content to put the Crown Princess of Terrasen through grueling physical training instead for the last four years.
Until he got too greedy.
Until the whispers started.
Until the Crown Princess unexpectedly became Queen and the whispers broke into shouts.
"It's simply...not budging," Aelin called across the training yard, weariness weighing down her voice.
Arobynn's lip curled in badly veiled disgust. "Disappointing, Aelin. Simply disappointing." Ordinarily, the insult would be enough to push her into a tidal wave of wildfire, but all it did was drop heavily upon her weighted shoulders. "Disappointing." He left, boots clicking against the stone steps.
Aelin let her sword tumble to the ground with a dull clang and made it a few jerky strides before she crumpled to the ground, her back flush against the sun-warmed stone of the far wall. Dark, shadowy clouds obscured the sunlight, and the summer air thickened to bursting, becoming heavy with the coppery scent of a storm.
She didn't have the strength to move.
Fat, lazy raindrops dripped slowly from the sky, plopping against the worn gray stones and sand of the training yard and the sweat-soaked material of Aelin's tunic and pants. She cupped her hands, catching the drops, overpowering grief crashing into her as she remembered her mother teaching her to catch the rain.
You may not have all of the water gift, my Fireheart, but anyone can hold the rain.
The queen tipped her head up to the sky as the rain thickened, its rapid patter splashing onto her face, mingled with the tears that slid down her face like the summer shower. I miss you, Mum. So much.
Eyes closed, the storm soaking through her clothes, Aelin felt the darkness close in on her, battering the wavering shreds of her faith. First the crown, now the wildfire--everything was being ripped from her fragile grasp. Even though it was late summer, even though the rain could barely touch the sand and stones before it soaked into nothing, she felt like the water was creeping up her chest, inexorably pulling her into its dark depths.
She was so...alone.
Unbidden, unprompted, heat rose up through Aelin's cupped hands, tiny sparks dancing around her fingertips. She cracked open her heavy eyes, released half a shuddering breath, and watched as the sparks kindled into tongues of flame, tiny dancing flickers of light and color amid the pouring rain. We are always with you, Fireheart, whispered a pair of voices in the depths of her heart.
The wildfire brightened, dancing higher, stronger, mirroring the hope that the queen grasped ahold of as she tugged herself to her feet, flames wreathing her hands and her brow, and picked up her sword.
She was Aelin Ashryver Galathynius.
And she would not be afraid.
“You can call me Rowan. That’s all you need to know.” He cocked his head to the side, a predator assessing his prey. “Thank you for the oil,” he added. “My skin was a little dry.”
