However, Arsenal may have to win the top four Premier League if they want to pay that amount without a problem. It will also make it easier to convince players because they can play in the Champions League.

However, if they fail to finish in the top four, Arsenal believe they can earn around £70m by releasing players like Matteo Guendouzi, Lucas Torreira, Ect. Ber Bellerin, Ainsley Maitland-Niles, Reese Nelson, Alex Runarson and Konstantinos Mavropanos are out of the squad.

As for William Saliba, Pablo Mari, Flo Balokan are likely to return to the club next season after their loan contracts expire.

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer had no doubt who his first choice target was during the recent summer transfer window.

Forbes reckon the Norwegian was insistent he wanted Harry Maguire to be the man to come in and shore up his defence.

Solskjaer’s stance came after United chiefs had drawn up a short list of potential acquisitions to bolster their backline.

Solskjaer ultimately got his man as United paid Leicester a world-record fee of £80m to get Maguire on board.

Christian Eriksen to Inter Milan plot

Inter Milan are understood to have set their sights on Christian Eriksen as the Tottenham playmaker’s contract stand-off rumbles on.

Eriksen was angling for a a move this summer but it failed to materialise and he now has just 10 months to run on his Spurs deal.

Inter are keeping tabs on his situation ahead of the January transfer window and could launch a raid to prise him away if his future is not resolved.

Inter manager Antonio Conte is a big fan of Eriksen and would love to snatch the Dane from the grasp of Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino.

Chelsea star in demand

Chelsea winger Willian has made his way on to Juventus’ wish list as the Serie A giants look to repeat their record of making savvy signings.

The wideman has less than a year left to run on his Chelsea contract and will be free to speak to foreign clubs about a move in January.

Juventus have cast their eye towards Willian having previously snapped up Aaron Ramsey and Emre Can when their deals at Arsenal and Liverpool expired.

Frank Lampard is keen to keep Willian at Chelsea but talks over a prospective new two-year contract are yet to be opened.

Manchester United will reportedly not be moving for Sporting Lisbon star Bruno Fernandes when the transfer window reopens in January.

The Portugal international was heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford during the summer window but, ultimately, chose to stay in his home country.

And The Sun say United have no interest in moving for the 24-year-old this winter.

It is claimed that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side have ‘backed off’ because they feel Real may try to sign him instead.

Lucas Moura offered

Barcelona were offered the the chance to sign Tottenham forward Lucas Moura.

Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo claim the Brazilian could have made the switch on Monday’s European transfer deadline day.

But the two parties were unable to agree on a fee for the 27-year-old international, with Spurs asking for £45million.

Moura featured in the first three Premier League fixtures of the season – but was benched for Sunday’s 2-2 draw with Arsenal.

Christian Eriksen battle

Atletico Madrid are still interested in signing Tottenham star Christian Eriksen.

The Dane has entered the final year of his contract in north London and appears destined to leave Spurs either in January or at the end of the 2019/2020 campaign.

Manchester United, Inter Milan, Barcelona and Real Madrid have all been tipped to launch offers for the 27-year-old.

But Spanish publication AS claim Diego Simeone’s side want to join Kieran Trippier at the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium.

Double sale

Juventus duo Mario Mandzukic and Emre Can will be available in January.

Both Can and Mandzukic were sensationally left out of Maurizio Sarri’s 2019/2020 Champions League squad – with the former Liverpool man absolutely livid.

“It was very shocking for me because last week I was told and promised something else,” Can said. “Yesterday I got a call from the coach, in which he told me in less than a minute and without explanation that I was not in the squad. I can not explain it, nobody has given me a reason until now.

“Me and my agent had talks with other clubs, Paris [Saint-Germain] as well. After discussions with Juventus, we decided to stay with the club. Players feel cheated

Barcelona players feel “cheated” after the club’s transfer dealings.

According to Spanish newspaper Sport, Barcelona’s talented dressing room were desperate to see Neymar back at the Nou Camp.

And it’s even claimed some of them made direct requests to president Josep Maria Bartomeu to get the deal sorted.

Sport say Ernesto Valverde’s side are upset that Neymar wasn’t signed from Paris Saint-Germain and think the club were never serious about his signature.

Tiemoue Bakayoko: It’s not a step back

Chelsea midfielder Tiemoue Bakayoko has defended his decision to return to Monaco.

The 25-year-old midfielder left the Ligue 1 side for Stamford Bridge for £40million in 2017 – but having struggled to adapt to Premier League life – he’s returned on loan for the remainder of the season.

“There was a good opportunity to come back here in a very good project,” Bakayoko said. “Lots of people will perhaps say that I am taking a step back by coming to Monaco but I see it differently.

“My two experiences abroad allowed me to play a lot, contrary to what a lot of people have said. My season in Milan brought me a lot in terms of new avenues of football and professionalism. I have taken a lot of positive things away from it.”

Late Leeds bid

Rangers winger Ryan Kent was close to joining Leeds, but their £4.5million bid for the player was rebuffed by the Reds close to the closure of the window last month.

As reported by the Liverpool Echo, Liverpool instead agreed to a £7.5million fee that has seen Kent swap Merseyside for Glasgow.

Leeds will have hoped that a possible transfer would have boosted their chances of promotion from the Championship.

But this was not to be, with Leeds settling on boosting their attacking ranks with Eddie Nketiah, Helder Costa, Jack Clarke – returning on loan from Tottenham – and Jack Harrison all on loan.

Pedri agreement

Barcelona could pay upwards of £22million for Las Palmas teenager Pedri.

The Catalan giants had a fairly quiet end to the transfer window but did manage to secure the arrival of highly-rated 16-year-old Pedri.

Pedri, who has started three fixtures this season, will remain with the Spanish second-tier side until July 2020.

Barcelona will pay an initial £5.8million at the end of the campaign but that figure could grow to £22.5m with future performance-related add-ons, claim Marca.

“The figure could go up to 25 million euros in the coming years,” Las Palmas president Miguel Angel Rodriguez explained. “The three big teams in Spain and a foreign club, who offered nine million euros.”

Las Palmas have retained a 15 per cent sell-on fee and Sport claim Pedri already has a £361m release clause in his contract.

Chris Smalling future

Chris Smalling could join Roma on a permanent basis.

The Manchester United centre-back joined the Serie A side on a season-long loan having fallen down the pecking order at Old Trafford.

And the agent who helped arrange the loan, Giulio Meozzi, suggested Roma could be his home for the foreseeable future.

Meozzi told Tuttomercato: “An important transfer There is a possibility of making a dry loan, with the option to keep for next year and that depends on his performances.”

No go Zinchenko

Juventus made a deadline day approach for Manchester City left-back Oleksandr Zinchenko.

The European transfer window closed on Monday and the Italian giants attempted to get a last-moment deal over the line, according to Italian website Calciomercato.

Zinchenko has been a mainstay under Pep Guardiola this campaign – starting all four of City’s Premier League fixtures.

And Pep reportedly blocked the approach for City’s 22-year-old talent.

Gunners should have signed…

Arsenal should have signed Manchester City midfielder Fabian Delph during the summer transfer window.

That’s according to Gunners legend Paul Merson, who believes the England international is better than Granit Xhaka, Mattéo Guendouzi and Lucas Torreira.

“I look at him and wonder why Arsenal didn’t sign him,” he told Sky Sports. “He is better than the midfield three that played against Tottenham.

“He could have played at left back instead of Kolasinac on Sunday. I am a big fan of Delph. He can play in certain positions and is an excellent signing for Everton.”

Neymar to Real Madrid

Real Madrid will sign Neymar in the next four months.

That’s according to Santos president Jose Carlos Peres, whose side could make an estimated £6million from their sell-on clause if PSG approve a £153m deal.

Barcelona were strong favourites to bring the Brazilian superstar back to the Nou Camp – two years after joining PSG for £200million.

However, Peres believes it’s Zinedine Zidane’s Galacticos who’ll snap up the 27-year-old.

“(The money) will still come! He will go to Real Madrid, if not now, it will be at the end of the year,” Peres told Brazilian outlet Globoesporte.

Liverpool scout Ugurcan Cakir

Liverpool are tracking Trabzonspor goalkeeper Ugurcan Cakir.

The Daily Mail claim Liverpool scouts were in attendance to watch the stopper during a 1-1 Super Lig draw against Fenerbahce on Sunday.

Cakir, 23, earned his debut for Turkey’s senior side back in May, in a friendly against Greece.

And it’s believed that Jurgen Klopp’s side will have to pay upwards of £14million to bring him to Anfield.

Man Utd double raid

Manchester United are reportedly eyeing deals for Christian Eriksen and Jan Oblak.

The Red Devils signed Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Harry Maguire and Daniel James for a combined £145million during the summer transfer window.

But various reports claim Ed Woodward and co are already planning future deals.

Spanish publication Diaro AS claim Atletico Madrid goalkeeper Oblak, who has an £108m release clause, is United’s primary candidate to replace David de Gea.

The Daily Mail also claim that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side have decided to bid for £70m-rated Tottenham playmaker Eriksen in January.

FEATURE: Bellerin out, Partey in? Arsenal facing £35m transfer conundrum

The summer transfer window is usually a turbulent time at Arsenal.

For years now fans have grown used to seeing some of their favourites move on in the hope of earning success elsewhere, while on the other hand top targets have slipped through their fingers due to the financial clout of rival bidders.

But so far the summer of 2020 has been relatively smooth sailing at Arsenal. The Gunners wanted to bring Willian in from Chelsea and they got him, landing the experienced attacker on a free transfer.

They also wanted to sign Gabriel Magalhaes from Lille and - once again - they got him, seeing off strong rival interest from the likes of Napoli and Everton to land the centre-back who the club’s scouting team had advised the hierarchy to sign.

The arrivals of the Brazilian duo have strengthened two key areas at Arsenal and have added to the belief that things are heading in the right direction in north London under Mikel Arteta.

That belief will only strengthen when Dani Ceballos returns for a second successive season-long loan from Real Madrid. Again, there were several other clubs interested in the Spain international, but there was only one place he wanted to go.

So far, Arsenal have navigated what is an incredibly challenging transfer market smoothly, but with five weeks left before the window closes on October 6, things are about to get a lot more difficult.

Arteta has long warned that some tough decisions may need to be made this summer if Arsenal are to put together the type of squad he believes can start reducing the gap between themselves and the top four - and that warning may be about to come to pass.

Having found the money needed to win the race for Gabriel, cash is now extremely limited at the Emirates. And when you are still looking to sign players of the stature of Thomas Partey and Houssem Aouar, that is far from ideal.

Arteta still views bringing in at least one other midfielder as key to his plans, with Partey the priority target. Atletico Madrid are steadfastly refusing to do business, and as such activating the Ghana international’s £44.5 million ($60m) release clause looks like being the only way Arsenal can get their man.

The Gunners, though, just do not have that type of money available right now.

Even before the coronavirus pandemic decimated the finances of football clubs around the world, Arsenal’s reserves were beginning to run dry after three seasons outside of the Champions League. Following Covid-19, things are really challenging for the north London club.

“My job is to assess and understand how much we can stretch that,” said Arteta when discussing Arsenal’s limited transfer kitty ahead of last Saturday’s Community Shield clash with Liverpool. “I have to try to make the right decision with everybody on board.

“We all know what we are trying to achieve. Hopefully we can do it.”

For Arsenal now, however, hitting their remaining targets in this transfer window can only be done by getting players out of the club first - and that is where the difficult decisions need to be made.

The north London club have spent the summer so far trying to get rid of players who are not seen as integral to Arteta’s plans.

Matteo Guendouzu has been offered around Europe, but so far there have been no firm takers. Shkodran Mustafi, Sokratis, Sead Kolasinac, Rob Holding, Mesut Ozil and Lucas Torreira are all still in north London despite being available for transfer, although both Sokratis and Torreira are now attracting strong interest from Napoli and Fiorentina respectively.

“The market is slow,” said Arteta when discussing the possibility of some of his squad leaving. “It’s very early stages so we have to wait and see.”

As the Spaniard rightly points out, there is still time for Arsenal to get some of those players out of the door, but even then the money received might not be enough to allow the club to get in the players they really want before October 6.

The Gunners really need at least one significant sale in the coming weeks, but the players who would generate a large enough transfer fee are ones Arteta would rather not lose.

Ainsley Maitland-Niles, for example, has been the subject of interest from Wolves. So far Arsenal have resisted that interest, rejecting at least one offer from the Molineuz outfit for the player who was named Man of the Match against Liverpool at Wembley last weekend.

Whether Wolves return with an increased offer remains to be seen. Arteta has publicly stated he does not want to lose the 23-year-old, who has just earned his first England call-up, but a large offer in the next couple of weeks will give Arsenal a big decision to make.

It is a similar story with Emiliano Martinez. The Argentine stunning form since he replaced the injured Bernd Leno in June has seen him catch the eye of clubs across Europe.

Martinez wants to be a No.1 goalkeeper, and his preference is to do that at Arsenal. But if Leno gets the nod from Arteta when the Premier League returns, then the 27-year-old will look to move on and any offers will certainly test the club's resolve to keep him.

Despite that, the big decisions that Arteta and Arsenal could face over the coming weeks will likely revolve around Hector Bellerin and Alexandre Lacazette.

Both are players that Arteta would ideally like to keep, as - when fully fit - they would make his starting XI.

Bellerin is attracting interest from several clubs, however, including Paris Saint-Germain.

The Spaniard is now 25 and has three years left on his contract. Arteta does not want to lose the right-back, but he has cover in that area with Maitland-Niles and Cedric Soares and knows that Bellerin could attract a large transfer fee in comparison to other players in his squad.

Arsenal value Bellerin at around £35m ($46m), and if PSG come in with an offer close to that, it could be that the club reluctantly agrees to let him go so they can push ahead with their pursuit of Partey, Aouar or both.

That is the type of decision Arsenal now face as they head into the final stages of the transfer window.

Players such as Bellerin and Lacazette, who has under two years left on his deal, have been key figures under Arteta. They would, however, generate the type of transfer fee that would go a long way to helping Arsenal bring in their top remaining targets.

“It's going to be a challenging transfer window,” said managing director Vinai Venkatesham last month. “But we'll continue to work hard to deliver on our objectives to strengthen the squad and Edu and Mikel have a really clear plan around how they'd like to do that.”

That plan was always going to involve some difficult decisions at some point. So far it has been relatively smooth sailing in the market for Arsenal this summer, but the next few weeks might see things get a bit more bumpy.

Poor recruitment: Arsenal's transfer focus has been looking in the wrong direction

For a team whose manager publicly confessed their inability to sign players permanently, the arrival of Denis Suarez at Arsenal was greatly welcomed. A player of his calibre, having won every major domestic trophy available in Spain while representing Barcelona, will augment the experience and quality of Arsenal’s midfield. Suarez previously played under Unai Emery’s tutelage at Sevilla, which is a notable bonus, but was the 25-year-old truly the most appropriate recruit for the Gunners?

This isn’t to suggest that he is a bad signing, nor is he of insufficient quality to play for the Gunners, but perhaps the club’s focus was misplaced when opting to sign the Spaniard. As is quintessential for most Spanish players, particularly those who have represented Barcelona, Suarez is endowed with tremendous technical quality, and he has a perceptible knack of choosing the right pass. He is also capable of playing as an attacking midfielder and has even been deployed at left-wing in the past, which provides invaluable tactical and positional flexibility.

However, the Gunners weren’t particularly in need of added creativity to bolster their attacking output. While one must always seize upon the chance to improve their team, Arsenal – with limited funds – should have demonstrated guile to identify their priorities better. A total of 50 goals in 24 league games is more than acceptable, particularly when your centre-forward is the second highest goal scorer in the division. That said, a total of 33 goals conceded – an average of more than a goal conceded every game – is frankly inexcusable for a team that is expected to compete on all fronts.

As has been the case with several Arsenal sides in recent years, the Gunners are defensively vulnerable, and despite the presence of Granit Xhaka, Matteo Guendouzi and Lucas Torreira in midfield, there’s an argument to be had that the North London team are still in need of engine room steel to protect a fragile defensive unit. The Gunners concede an average of 12.6 shots per game; only Manchester United concede more shots per game out of the top six sides. Collectively, Bernd Leno and Petr Cech have only kept three clean sheets in the league this season, which is a disgraceful return for a club vying to qualify for the Champions League.

In fairness, Arsenal have endured injuries of late which has troubled their pursuit for continuity, but the extent of their defensive fragility is almost inexcusable. While the need for more defenders is strikingly apparent, a combative and a defensive specialist in midfield would arguably have been a better solution than Suarez.

As is widely acknowledged, the January transfer window is often a problematic period to conduct transfer business. Between vastly inflated fees and limited targets due to general reluctance to sell, it can often be challenging to complete shrewd deals. However, considering that Suarez joined on loan with an option to buy, Arsenal could have conceivably conducted a similar deal for a defensive midfielder.

Naturally, given the immense number of factors, crafting hypothetical situations is always a flawed method of comparison, but one cannot help but feel that a defensive midfielder would have been far more effectual to negate the pressing issues that Arsenal currently face. The arrival of Suarez, for all his talent and experience of success in the upper echelons of European football, is unlikely to alleviate the most significant problems that Emery has encountered this season. To put it bluntly, that’s poor recruitment.

Arsenal ‘close’ to granting reunion with first of four deals in motion

The 2018 World Cup was such an enthralling experience that the transfer window has been largely forgotten about over the last month or so – let alone the fact it will end three weeks earlier than usual for Premier League clubs this time around.

So, which sides have wisely got their business done early, and who’s facing a race against time to get a squad together by the time deadline day arrives? Here’s a quick look at what every big six club still has left to do…

The Least – Man City

Signings: Riyad Mahrez Exits: Angus Gunn, Yaya Toure, Pablo Maffeo, Angelino, Ashley Smith-Brown, Rodney Kongolo, Javairo Dilrosun, Olarenwaju Kayode, Divine Nash, Jacob Davenport, Isaac Buckley-Ricketts (12 players loaned/released) Contracts expiring in 2019: Eliaquim Mangala, Vincent Kompany, Brahim Diaz, Joe Hart

After masterminding a record-breaking Premier League title win last season and already securing the services of Riyad Mahrez for the coming campaign, Pep Guardiola will be more than happy entering the new season with the squad already at his disposal. After all, he’s got at least two options for pretty much every position and Benjamin Mendy, after missing the vast majority of last term, will be like a new signing anyway.

The only real issue for City is finding an alternative to Jorginho, who’s ended up following Maurizio Sarri to Chelsea instead. It’s not an immediate concern – the Italian was being targeted as the long-term successor to Fernandinho at the base of midfield – but if it can be addressed this summer, City will be keen to bring a player of that profile into the club.

Overall though, the onus is never really on the champions to strengthen and a whole host of deadwood from the reserve ranks has already been ousted this summer. If City can sign a deep-lying midfielder and find new homes for Joe Hart and Eliaquim Mangala, it will be pretty much a perfect summer for the reigning champions.

Liverpool

Signings: Naby Keita, Fabinho, Xherdan Shaqiri, Isaac Christie-Davies Exits: Emre Can, Jon Flanagan (Nine players loaned/released) Contracts Expiring in 2019: James Milner, Daniel Sturridge, Divock Origi, Alberto Moreno, Lazar Markovic, Ragnar Klavan, Connor Randall

Although there are some signings still in the pipeline, Liverpool have probably been the big six’s most clinical executors this summer. The Fabinho deal came out of nowhere, the swoop for Xherdan Shaqiri was wrapped up within a few weeks of the rumours first emerging and Naby Keita’s services were secured well over twelve months ago.

On the outward front, there’s still some work to be done though. Daniel Sturridge, Divock Origi, Alberto Moreno and Lazar Markovic are now into the final year of their contracts and would all benefit from moves away, but it’s more a question of whether they can find clubs who want to take them on, rather than the Reds being obliged to sell. Extra depth certainly won’t be a problem for Jurgen Klopp.

In addition to the impending arrival of Alisson from Roma for a world-record goalkeeper fee, Liverpool’s pursuit of Nabil Fekir could go right down to the wire and if Lyon don’t agree a deal with the Anfield outfit, they’ll still have the final three weeks of August to find another suitor from abroad willing to meet their valuation of the France international. That puts the Reds under some pressure, but if Klopp has proved anything from his last two transfer windows, it’s that he’s fully prepared to be patient and wait for the right player to become available.

Arsenal

With five players already signed in an attempt to almost completely rebuild a backline that was painfully porous away from home last season, the remainder of Arsenal’s summer business seems to hinge on who could leave the club before Unai Emery can consider bringing more players in. Perhaps Steven N’Zonzi will end up at the Emirates Stadium before the close of play, but the question of exits seems far more pertinent.

Aaron Ramsey’s yet to agree a contract extension beyond next summer, it remains to be seen just how valuable Mesut Ozil is in the eyes of Emery and Petr Cech could well be on his way out following the arrival of Bernd Leno.

In fact, Arsenal could end up with too many players to actually register in their 23-man squad, although the north Londoners will feel there’s no great rush with three weeks of the transfer window left to go. Emery will be pretty content with the incomings and outgoings that have already taken place this summer – many of which were even concluded before the World Cup – although if there are some big-name departures, the new Gunners gaffer and Sven Mislintat may well be tempted into getting a late signing or two over the line.

Man United

Signings: Fred, Diego Dalot, Lee Grant Exits: Michael Carrick, Daley Blind, Joe Riley (1 player loaned/released) Contracts expiring in 2019: Anthony Martial, Juan Mata, Ander Herrera, Phil Jones, Chris Smalling, Luke Shaw, Matteo Darmian, Antonio Valencia, Ashley Young, Andreas Pereira, James Wilson

The situation on the red side of Manchester isn’t so rosy. In theory, United’s squad is already bursting at the seams with established talent, but the Red Devils were so far off their noisy neighbours last season it’s quite staggering that the only first team addition so far has been midfielder Fred, the  other signings being youngster Diogo Dalot and veteran (presumably third-choice) goalkeeper Lee Grant on a free transfer.

The Brazilian should provide a key point of balance between Paul Pogba and Nemanja Matic in midfield, but the two other departments – the front and backlines – still desperately need addressing. It’s not wholly obvious what United’s best centre-back partnership truly is, Antonio Valencia and Ashley Young are no spring chickens and for all the options United have on the left of attack – Anthony Martial, Marcus Rashford and Alexis Sanchez – they don’t have any convincing ones on the right.

It could well be a case of United needing to generate more funds before they spend big, and there are plenty of players who could be thrown on the scrapheap – Matteo Darmian, Luke Shaw, Juan Mata and Martial all fall into that category as part of a large collection of players whose contracts expire next summer. If that is what’s holding up United’s business though, there’s a great deal to be done before the transfer window slams shut.

Tottenham

Signings: None Exits: Keanan Bennetts, Anton Walkes Contracts Expiring in 2019: Toby Alderweireld, Jan Vertonghen, Mousa Dembele, Fernando Llorente, Michel Vorm

Classic Tottenham leaving all their business to the last minute, but the real concern is whether Daniel Levy’s old trick of delaying deals as late as possible to get best value will actually work in a transfer window that ends three weeks earlier for the Premier League than the rest of world football.

Tottenham still lack an obvious understudy to Harry Kane and are yet to resolve the futures of Toby Alderweireld, Danny Rose and Mousa Dembele. But the pool of clubs interested in those players seems to be getting smaller and smaller, and Tottenham are just one of three Premier League sides yet to make any signings.

It must be a real bugbear for Mauricio Pochettino, who was insistent upon key changes at the north London club when he signed a new contract at the end of last season. It seems Spurs are once again falling into the same age-old trap and there are no guarantees Levy can pull it off during what is the most unique summer transfer window in Premier League history.

The Most – Chelsea

Signings: Jorginho Exits: (22 players loaned/released) Contracts Expiring in 2019: Thibaut Courtois, Olivier Giroud, David Luiz, Pedro, Cesc Fabregas, Gary Cahill, Lucas Piazon, Willy Caballero

Having waited so long to appoint Sarri, Chelsea’s transfer window essentially only started a few days ago when they announced the signing of Jorginho. It’s certainly a step in the right direction but considering how poor Chelsea were last season, finishing a title defence in fifth place, there’s still huge work to be done at Stamford Bridge in practically every department.

Most worryingly, however, is the list of players who could easily leave west London this summer. The futures of Willian, goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, captain Gary Cahill and talisman Eden Hazard are shrouded in serious doubt and should the whole quartet be sold this summer – which isn’t a scenario entirely in the club’s control due to various contract situations – Chelsea will be facing a real race to put together a competitive and experienced squad in time for the close of the window.

On top of that, Sarri needs to find a way of actually moulding this squad around his philosophy, which is incredibly far removed from Antonio Conte’s in terms of both playing style and formation. It already seems like it will end up being a case of the Italian having to work with what he’s been given, rather than bringing in his own recruits. But in any case, Chelsea really don’t have long to make up lost ground this summer.

Euro Paper Talk: Nuno makes demand to Tottenham over new budget buy; familiar twist to Man Utd transfer plan

TOTTENHAM URGED BY NUNO TO SIGN NEW DEFENSIVE TARGET

Nuno Espirito Santo has urged Tottenham to sign Granada centre-back Domingos Duarte, according to Fichajes. Tottenham began their season in fine fashion with a Premier League win over champions Manchester City. However, they have come crashing back down to earth after a rotated lineup lost the first leg of their Europa Conference League play-off to Pacos De Ferreira. It is clear that more depth is required in the Spurs squad before the transfer window closes. They are particularly looking to strengthen in defence, an area they wanted two signings in. They are half-way there after adding Cristian Romero to their squad from Atalanta earlier this month. But the search is still ongoing for their next centre-back addition. The emergence of Japhet Tanganga may have affected their plans, but they still seem to be pursuing another centre-back. For example, they remain interested in a move for Bologna defender Takehiro Tomiyasu, as per Calciomercato. But over in Spain, Fichajes claim Nuno has found a potentially more cost-effective option. The source suggests he has “demanded” the signing of his Portuguese compatriot Domingos Duarte from La Liga outfit Granada. Duarte has been with Granada since 2019, when he joined them from Sporting CP after a loan spell with Deportivo La Coruna. He played in the first leg of their Europa League quarter-final loss to Manchester United last season, a few months after becoming a full Portugal international. Now, he could be ready to take the next step in his career.

Duarte to fit within Tottenham budget

Fichajes note that Duarte would be a “low cost” option, which Nuno is aware of. He reportedly feels the 26-year-old would be a shrewd addition to a Tottenham squad that he wants to challenge for the top four again. Even though a move to Tottenham would be a “high quality jump” for Duarte, Nuno reportedly feels he is capable of adapting. What’s more, the fact that his contract only runs until 2023 means he won’t be as expensive as some other targets. Atalanta are interested in taking their former winger Amad Diallo back on loan from Manchester United. Sheffield United have also been looking into such a deal. Liverpool fans will be sick at the sight of Thomas Partey, but they may be about to see a whole lot more of him.

The Atletico Madrid midfielder, who recently produced a dominant display against the Reds in the Champions League, could be heading to the Premier League this summer.

Arsenal have been long-term admirers of the 26-year-old, who has established himself as one of Atletico’s most important players in recent years.

Now, reports claim Arsenal are close to sealing a deal to bring one of Europe’s best defensive midfielders to the Emirates.

So, what’s the latest news and why are Arsenal so keen on the Ghana star? talkSPORT.com takes a look.

What’s the gossip?

The Gunners are reportedly ready to pay £43million to trigger Partey’s release clause.

Although Atletico are desperate to keep him, Corriere dello Sport claims he is now ‘one step away’ from a move to the Emirates.

There are also rumours Arsenal could offer the Spanish club Alexandre Lacazette in a bid to seal the deal.

The Madrid giants face an uphill battle to keep their star player, due in part to his well-known love for Arsenal and the Premier League.

Atletico are trying to tie him down to a new deal, which would see his wages doubled and his release clause raised to £93m.

But Partey’s father has confirmed the talks with Arsenal, who look set to swoop in before the midfielder agrees fresh terms.

“I called my son after hearing the rumours and he told me that the rumours are true,” Jacob Partey, who was speaking in Ghana, told Tru FM’s ‘Sports World Show’.

He told me they are holding talks between him and Arsenal. It all depends on the offer Atletico are demanding. If he goes to Arsenal fine, they have a lot supporters in Ghana.

“I will be happy if he decides to move to Arsenal. What they are discussing now is how Atletico will release him.”

Partey is a boyhood Gunners fan and has spoken publicly about his desire to play in England one day.

According to The Athletic, Partey was desperate to join what was then Unai Emery’s side last summer, but the club were unwilling to fork out the £43m fee.

In an interview with ESPN last summer, the Ghana international said: “The Premier League is a good league, it’s very competitive and has some of the best players in the world,” he admitted.

“Hopefully, one day. I would like to play there. My agents are on it so I will leave everything for them.”

What kind of player is he?

The holding role has evolved over the years, so much that the classic box-to-box midfielder is an increasing rarity.

Most teams split the responsibilities in midfield among two, or maybe three, players these days – but Partey does it all.

The Ghanaian’s stats reveal a complete midfielder who is equally capable in both defence and attack.

In this season’s Champions League, Partey has averaged 3.6 tackles per game and 1.5 interceptions, providing excellent protection for his back four.

Then in attack, he makes 1.6 key passes and completes almost two dribbles per 90, which is rather impressive for someone in his position.

Partey can keep things ticking over, too. He was making more than 60 passes per game in this season’s Champions League.

All of those qualities were on show as he dominated Liverpool’s midfield during the 1-0 victory at the Wanda Metropolitano in February.

The 26-year-old is one of the main reasons Diego Simeone’s side have been so solid in defence since his emergence in 2015.

And the more you watch him, the more you realise that £43m is an absolute bargain in today’s market.

What have the experts said?

Simeone is a huge fan of his Atletico mainstay and will no-doubt be desperately disappointed should Partey leave this summer.

Back in January 2019, the Argentine boss claimed the midfielder could’ve easily played for either of the two big Manchester clubs.

The Argentine said: “Thomas is an amazing player. He could have played for Manchester City [or] Manchester United.

“We’re talking about a great player here. I rate him very highly.”

Simeone also believes Partey has gone under the radar because he arrived from Ghana and came through Atleti’s academy.

“I could say so many things [about Thomas], but with some of them I have to shut up,” Simeone said in October last year.

“I’m very happy with Thomas.

“If he had come from an English or German team, he would be [lauded] but he’s from the academy and he’s just Thomas.

“He has been working for many years, non-stop.”

How would he fit in at Arsenal?

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta doesn’t appear to fancy Matteo Guendouzi or Lucas Torreira, while Granit Xhaka’s problems at the Emirates have been well-documented.

Meanwhile, Dani Ceballos looks set to return to Real Madrid once his one-year loan with the Gunners expires.

Long story short, Arsenal desperately need a player like Partey.

The club have been criticised for their defensive frailties this season, but Gunners legend Sol Campbell believes their true problem lies in midfield.

He told talkSPORT earlier this season: “For me, it’s the controlling of the game. The middle of the park is where they’re lacking.

“The steeliness and the balance just isn’t there. It’s the middle of the park, you win or lose a lot of games there.

“You can have a strong back or a strong front, but if you haven’t got a middle that’s really solid, then you have forwards dropping too deep because they’re not getting fed and defenders doing too much.

“You get less attacks against you [with a stronger midfield] because you control the game more and you have the ball more.

“You win second balls and you don’t give silly fouls away. Yes, you’ve got to sort out the back. But in the middle of the park, they’ve got to get someone solid.”

Partey is that man, he’s been doing that very job at Atletico Madrid for years and he’s now in his prime at 26.
