Varied polychrome reconstructions of Statue of Thalia, Greek Muse of Comedy. 2nd BCE, Delos. Reconstructions by the Liebieghaus Polychromy Research Project.
In the early 1500s, the church ordered several portraits by Jan van Eyck altered to make the subjects’ skin appear more flawless. One large mole was removed from the Arnolfini Portrait entirely. Only now that restoration has achieved its current technological status are efforts under way to replenish the Flemish blemish.
The vault of the church of San Benedetto in Catania, Sicily, was frescoed by Giovanni Tuccari between 1726 and 1729. The paintings depict the Life of Saint Benedict and six Allegories surrounding the Triumph of Saint Benedict. During the 19th century, most of the frescoes of the vault were covered with white plaster to make the interiors of the church more sober and in line with the taste of the time. During World War II, in 1943, a bomb hit the church creating a gash in the ceiling that broke the plaster that covered the vault for over a century.
Today we are again able to see the church as it was conceived in the eighteenth century thanks to the restoration work carried out by the architect Armando Dillon who began the restoration of the frescoes in 1948.
