Artist Statement
Hey there! My name is Piper. I have been taking pictures for forever, but this year I finally got to use a DSLR camera. Ever since I was little I remember asking for a camera so that I could document all of the special, beautiful, silly, and crazy things around me. This semester that dream was finally realized. I have learned so much and I think my photos are even more clear and creative than before. I have experimented with lighting, with focus, and even with editing pictures to give different feelings and perceptions of time.
I like photography because it takes a moment in time and freezes it; keeping it safe for future walks down memory lane. I strive to share my experiences with future generations AND people now. I can't think of any better way to do that than with old photos. Photography tells a story. I know that someday I will forget certain details of the wondrous stories in my life, but photography can preserve those details. It can even preserve my mood in the moment based on my editing or the way I took the shot. Something so cool about photography is that even if we were all at the same event, we all experienced it differently. It is important to see what other people experience in their lives. You can learn about what is going on in different cities and countries throughout the world. You can see what it's like to live in other cultures and places, or what it's like to work a job simply by looking at a single picture.
I make my art to share the beauty of all that I see around me. I think it's a really special opportunity.

The beauty of stippling and pointillism has become a deep passion for me. Every line drawn, every point made is an exploration into the depths of my creative soul. The inspiration that I draw from wildlife and animals across Scotland is truly humbling.
The intricate detail in the feathers of birds, the way the sunlight dances off the fur of the red deer, the boldness of the Highland cow against the sweeping landscape of greenery--all these components work together to evoke emotion and spark creativity within me.
My artworks are an ode to nature and its wild inhabitants. Each stroke of the pen is an attempt to recreate the beauty of the natural world around me. In turn, this approach allows me to explore and connect with my own creative spirit.
The soft grayscale of stippling art gives me a gentle yet powerful way to express myself. I love playing with light and shadow on the page, manipulating them to create the illusion of movement or stillness. Pointillism is like painting with pixels; each dot carries its own unique weight, allowing me to build up an image with just a few deliberate strokes.
Though my art may look delicate and fragile, my process is strong and deliberate. Through my work, I strive to capture the motion and emotion of wildlife and nature and share it with others. Stippling and pointillism offer me a window into exploring my creative identity and the wonders of the Scottish land.

Kochi Bienalle, 2023
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I always look forward to visiting Kochi Bienalle because my art consumption is usually not much, and it just feels good to take time off to walk around and look at art for a few days at a stretch. However, the Bienalle this time felt a little timid when it came to seeing installation art and video work. Video work is anyway a difficult space to be in as a spectator because a chunk of the work requires you to have plenty of time and dedication to engage with. But on the other hand, the artist too at times falls short of checking their boundaries of self-indulgence and aims away from what makes art effective. What makes an art piece effective? The answer definitely doesn't lie in the verbose artist statements for me. I find them difficult to read, and by the end of the very first paragraph, you start skipping words and jump onto the floating mammoth issues of gender, caste, consciousness, etc. I am not against art being an inquiry into the larger issues, but the art itself needs to have some gateways of open spaces where the audience can find some rope for grasping at interpretations. If the art is obscure (I understand that art is subjective), then it becomes a tough glass to see through. I have been mulling over this thought of creating a checklist on what makes art effective?
01. Scale is a big agent in playing with altering perspective. It tries to question how you are looking at a subject, and it feels like a good starting point to let the reader/spectator/ audience walk into what the art is about.
02. Let the art borrow something from the shared understanding and knowledge of the commoners. If all your metaphors are too close to your own, then there is no doorway for others to enter it.
03. This is a rule I try to follow personally for illustration or any idea for that matter, but I don't see why it can't be applied to Art too. Try not to layer too many thoughts/metaphors/ideas in one single piece. The art then becomes a raw, watered-down attempt where you are grasping for too many meanings and not holding onto a single one.
04. It's okay for art to be an enquiry of the medium and not have a larger problem to address. Sometimes you are just intrigued by the play of the medium itself and any other imposition of a question feels like a burden.
05. Write simply and effectively what your piece is about as an artist. Stick to a single or at most two paragraphs. The larger bodies of text can be looked at later in a booklet if somebody is eager to know more. To see three or four paragraphs of text for every single piece becomes tiring for the reader.
06. It could have been a book. Not every piece is meant to be an exhibit. A research project output has to go through translations where it's not occupying exhibition space as just raw material. It needs to be synthesised and then put together in a way that lets the spectator grasp the larger picture first before jumping into the micro details.
07. Lastly, engaging with so much art in a short span is not a doable feat. Maybe it's a futile attempt to alter anything when the audience in general is quick to move on from one piece to the other. But the question still arises and is worth pondering over as to what is then an effective display of an art piece when put together with so many other pieces.
I am a nobody in the art world and I am pretty sure art connoisseur will roll their eyes if they ever read this. But I genuinely feel that maybe it's worth understanding whether an art exhibition is purely for the artist or it's for the spectator too.
I chanced upon a few exhibitions happening outside the umbrella of the Bienalle, and some of the work actually felt honest and a genuine attempt because it spoke to you directly without being verbose.
I took plenty of photos on my phone too as a goofy attempt to spot peculiarities found in the bylanes of Fort Kochi. Dumping it here as reference material for the future.

Not everything can be written off about the Bienalle though. I found the photography work quite strong this time around, maybe because I am being more observant of the craft and what makes a photo good. The work of photographers I really appreciated this Bienalle were - Shahidul Alam, Madiha Aijaz, Palani Kumar, Paribartana Mohanty, Nishad Ummer, and Ishan Tankha.
Tumblr media
I was relatively new to photography and experimentation, in those days, meant special effects, filters, darkroom tricks. There was something more substantial though. In trying to use black and white infra red film, I learnt an important skill. The ability to pre-visualise. Quite apart from the fact that I used an opaque filter to take this photograph and couldn't see through the shutter as I pressed it. The image that I wanted to create was very different from the scene that was in front of my lens. I was learning to see as my camera and film see. I called the picture, which I'd taken in Kew Garden in London, the 'Floating Forest' and it has stayed one of my favourite images. Shortly afterwards many of the trees in Kew Garden were felled by a massive storm.
The work of Amol K Patil resonated strongly with how close it went to show the spirit of angst and rebellion through clever tweaks of the medium.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here's just an assorted dump (alas, the tumblr image limit) of photos of exhibits I really found appealing.

Day 327 art meditation, May 14 …
HAPPY announcement!!!
My new online Print Store is up and running on my website. I am so excited to share my art with you!! Paper prints, Metal prints and Canvas prints. I learned 1,000 new things in the last two weeks, and fed my inner 12-year old at the same time.
Link to my website in bio! Follow the STORE link. I will add to the store weekly. I can’t wait - in a Being-Present kind of way  - until I am able to start creating new art. Slow is faster. 😉
Speaking of mothering and giving birth on this Mother’s Day, All-lines-are-beautiful is my baby. It’s the children I never had. It’s not the journey I wanted … you know how our ego-spaces always want the easier route, which is the difference between the illusive security of a full time job and this entrepreneurship role I am in. Heart-journeys are never easy.
All I want to do is be Creative, because that’s who I am - thanks to my incredibly creative mother. But 10 years ago I DID set out ‘for the next big challenge’, and of course the Universe delivered!
Today a family friend of ours who was only about 30 years old and a husband and father died while paragliding, and in my shock and heartbreak I am reminded to be grateful for every moment of my life
I am wearing a paper dress of one of my logo variations !!! This weekend I finally executed an idea that I had a long time ago and I am SO happy I didn’t abandon my idea. This is my “first pancake” test of making my own wall background and paper dress. Lots of work in progress shots from beginning to end. Thanks to my Beloved for being my in-house photographer and cheerleader. (❤️)
Eons ago, when I was living in NYC, one of my little sisters told me, that my ‘dress-to-event-ratio’ was way out of proportion. 😂 And it still is, so this is me not abandoning my love of dresses.
If I am asking YOU to lean into the discomfort and express yourself from your heart through my Heart-Art Bundles, then I have to do that too. This art is me being both uncomfortable - being imperfect in front of the camera, not behind a desk where I LOVE to hide - and having huge unexplainable Joy at the same time.
Every minute of every day we have a choice of what we want to create and how to BE and I choose beauty and joy.
Much love,
Anne

🔴 SOLD From inspiring much later werewolf stories, to a symbolic narrative about the end of human sacrifices, the myth of Lycaon is so multidimensional and a perfect example of the depth of Greek mythology. I find it so intriguing that when I received a commission for a new version of it I was more than happy to dive in again. Scroll down in my profile to spot my previous views on the subject. Continued with this canvas, after thinking 20 years it was finished. The paintings backside work in progress, just with oil, since circa 2013 ish. I remember I bought the canvas and the wood, building it in 2000, after painting in Hongkong aberdeen. Might have shown this painting at the exhibition at the Kunstverein Bonn Duisdorf. The exhibition Vernissage ( art opening ) just a few days before I flew at the 11.September 2001, from Münster via train, to Frankfurt. Flew from Frankfurt airport, via Bangkok, to Auckland Newzeeland. Painting walls, exhibiting, painting canvases for a month, with in NewZeeland, Sydney, and Perth. Im will painting my paintings with a approach learning, variating ( which is learning). Got to grow as much as possible, while creating a oeuvre people like seeing. Making the fact that I have all these ‘ small ‘ formats, my advantage. Growing learning , for the larger format paintings. Having fun, being entertained, is the natural priority. That keeps me going. Painting is like creating a childhood, youth playboy, playroom toy collection with is a magical collection from super cool toys, astonishing scale models. Like seeing a well curated comic collection for the first time. Or standing in shop, which was a overwhelming Sortiment of products you love. ( candyshop, museum, weapon collection, collectible car collection, comic book store, limited edition sneaker store, luxury watches collection, etc.) it’s like Iam painting myself these paintings, to expierence that feeling. #SEAK #ClausWinkler #SEAKClausWinkler #artmotivation #Cooltoys #scalemodelcollections #scalemodelcollector #Spielzeugsammlung #Spielzeugsammlung #Kunstverein #Artistmanifesto #artiststatement #Collection #collections #spielzeugkiste #schaufenster #Windowshopping #Naseplattdrücken #Sammlung #coolscalemodel #firsttimeinthesnow #playflow #graphicnovelcollection #Collecting #collectingcars #collectingcomics #collectingscalemodels #collectingluxury #timepieces (at Germany) https://www.instagram.com/p/CihE-3Oo9Zm/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

In the works, on Turkey, where western and eastern cultures meet, Turkish Baths which are a part of Turkish identity, and the civilizations, cultures and religions which have shaped Turkish culture, this study finds that Turkish culture is not composed only of eastern and Islamic culture, but a culture that synthesizes countless western and eastern civilizations. Before the implementation of the works, civilizations such as tengrism/shamanism in Central Asia, Ancient Greece, Rome, Byzantium, Seljuk, and Ottoman civilizations were examined using the documentary. The study moved on to images portraying Turkish Baths after the reflections of imagery from different civilizations and cultures on Turkish culture was examined.
When resources regarding the tengri/shaman beliefs of Central Asian Turks were reviewed, a remarkable connection between water culture and the concept of “cyclical time” was found and examined further. Influenced by the concept of cyclical time, placing the softer, not sharp, transitive, simple and limpid effect of body figures in the forefront was intended in the implementation of the works. Overlapping translucent figures were used to try and reinforce the fluidity of time.
In the cultural history of the Anatolian peninsula, where the majority of the population is made up of Turks, it was observed that Anatolian civilizations had consecutive relationships which impacted one another. It was observed that Turkish culture was influenced by Ancient Greek culture upon the migration of Turks from Central Asia to Anatolia. In order to reflect concepts such as transparence and transitiveness in the works, inspiration was taken from the Ancient Greek conception of “catharsis”. It was observed that Ancient Greek, Roman and Byzantine bath cultures influenced the bathing culture and Turkish bath architecture of the following Turkish nations. It was found that the consecutive relationships between the Anatolian civilizations which influenced each other were also formed between different religions. It was observed that, thanks to states like the Seljuks and Ottomans which accepted Islam, Turkish bath culture was more dematerialized in the context of catharsis than in Ancient Greece, Rome of Byzantium. Influenced by the conceptualization of absolution in Sufism, known as mysticism in Islam, it was intended to reflect bodily and spiritual absolution in the work using translucent and white figures.
In the works, there was an attempt to use overlapping interpretations of figures, similar to the interlocking civilizations in the process of researching Turkish Bath culture. A literature review on Homi Bhabha’s idea of “cultural hybridity” was conducted in this context. In the backgrounds of the figures, motifs and images belonging to the Turkish culture- which has become hybrid in a cultural context with the adoption and adaptation of the elements of history, religion and culture of other civilizations over time- were used and interpreted with interdisciplinary eclectic understanding.
The concept of orientalism was examined in the study since the Turkish Baths have been one of the main subjects of orientalism in Western Art History, It was attempted to criticize the effort of the western world to portray the east as it desires, and to readress the east through an eastern perspective via the implemented works. Since the aim of the works was to interpret the hybridized Turkish culture and identity, works on the Turkish Baths were interpreted using the eclectic interdisciplinary relationships between traditional arts and plastic arts.

Art by @seencapone A better look at the ‘Palimpsest’ animations that were part of the collection of #generativeart pieces released on Depict (see previous post) and some of the press stuff from the time (2015). I like the #artiststatement language used here although I avoided terms like ‘generative art’ or ‘algorithmic art’ because at the time I felt that wasn’t so accessible to the audience. And anyway I saw myself as trying to have a different conversation with art history and moving image art that wasn’t so tech-focused. 🧐 . #videoart #digitalart #animationart #publicart #graffitiart https://www.instagram.com/p/CdEHdkcrwCC/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Day 326 Art Meditation
This is what I’m talking about!! when EVERYTHING aligns - art as your life, art IN your life, art as an expression of your life.
I was doing an Anne-date - a date with All-lines-are-beautiful - and took a hike around San Francisco - here’s the story:
I’m VERY intentional about inserting inspiration for my creative journey. In fact it was the main reason I moved back to the Bay area 10 years ago, to know that I would be immersing myself in an environment of inspiration, innovation and creative support. I didn’t know then that would be in the category of innovation with my Heart-Art bundles, but now that part makes sense.
On my hike, I walked by a house that has Bubbles painted on it, and turned around to see a van that matches the house next to it. I looked down on the sidewalk and the entire two sidewalks of the house had Mandela artwork - not matching art but permanent and intentional. AND a bench for sitting, I presume to take in all the art.
It’s the kind of Intangible event that my Heart-Art Bundles are about. You walk into the art and something incredible happens. Something incredible happens because you are drawn to it and because you know that growth is only in the place of discomfort.
When I take my walks, my head is still usually in the place of practical solutions. But then I walk into art like this - the same art on a house and a car - and something inside me shifts OPEN. My Heart became wide open with light and air at that moment, and I am so grateful to the homeowner who decided they needed to have a matching car and house. This is how our Hearts connect - through art.
The fact that nationally art is so undervalued speaks volumes to me about how separated humans are from one another.
NEW beautiful things happen through art.
I will keep making my art bundles, and I look forward to meeting that next person who knows this heart-art-bundle journey is right for them.
Posting more Ocean Abalone art, which shows the beautiful, mysterious transformation journey. Life is always emerging and so, my artwork does too. The BELIEF in the process is motion, so I always want my art to show motion.
I also love that my artwork reminds me of stained glass windows, because I want to connect to the sense of what is Sacred - which is all of our Heart-Spaces.
Love,
Anne
