Just because Kyojuro Rengoku is a positive, inspiring, older-brother type figure to younger slayers doesn’t mean he’s emotionally stunted and doesn’t experience the full range of human emotion. Flame breathing stems from passion and passion means all emotions — not just the good ones. Reducing him down to a happy, go-lucky dumb puppy dog is a disservice to his character.

💡 A game that inspired my own design or creative practice.

Dwindle by Caro Asercion has been a source of inspiration for me recently! Their game design always stands out to me as gorgeously streamlined: it’s efficient, not in the sense of minimalism or stripping out flavor to leave only mechanics, but in a way that feels respectful of the reader's time.

I could go off about it for ages but the one thing I'll highlight is the way character stats work. I think it's really special when gameplay feels meaningfully in step with the genre and emotional tenor of the game and Dwindle really succeeds there:

For Elucien, I have so so many. But I am pretty convinced that when Elain accepts the bond she is going to go ALL out on that meal acceptance meal. 29. ...as a promise

The first year they’re married isn’t always easy. It’s a struggle when they’re both still in college and both working. When they don’t get much time to spend together. When they’re both stressed and short-tempered. When they’re trying their hardest to make everything work. 

It’s easy to get frustrated with each other. It’s easy to get into arguments. And they do. But they talk. They’ve gotten better about that. They talk and they make up and they keep in mind that their lives won’t always be like this. 

Blaine needs his time and attention more than Kurt realizes sometimes. He knows how easily they can get caught up in their individual lives. He knows how easily he can fall into routines and forget to make time for just the two of them, for their life together. But he’s trying to get better about that. He’s trying to get better about recognizing when Blaine needs him, when Blaine has been giving too much of his time and energy and support to him, when he needs to be the one to give. Sometimes the little red box on the dresser serves as a glaring reminder that he needs to be sure to give too, that he needs to show his husband how loved he is too sometimes.

Kurt plans on spoiling his husband on their anniversary. Sometimes it’s still a little weird to think that they’ve been married for a whole year already. That they’re husbands. That they get to spend the rest of their lives together. There’s no one else he’d rather spend his life with. 

He hates to pull himself away from his husband on a morning like this, where they have no plans for the day and could wake up together and share lazy, sleepy kisses until they feel like getting out of bed, but he has to so he can wake Blaine up with breakfast in bed. So he quietly slips out of bed, pressing a light kiss to his sleeping husband’s temple before going to their kitchen to make them breakfast. 

Blaine is just barely awake when Kurt returns with a mug of coffee and a happy “Good morning.”

“Good morning,” Blaine says through a half-yawn. “Happy anniversary.”

“Happy anniversary. I’ll be right back with breakfast,” he finishes with a kiss to Blaine’s cheek.

“I’m not going to complain about breakfast in bed,” Blaine starts when he comes back with their breakfast tray, “but you didn’t have to do all this.”

“But I wanted to. It’s our anniversary, and I don’t get to make you breakfast in bed very often,” Kurt responds as he settles himself back down on their bed. 

“Can’t argue with that,” Blaine says around a bite of French toast. “Thank you for making breakfast.”

“Of course. You know that I like to do things like this for you, right?”

“I know. We just haven’t been able to do them very often recently.”

“That’s the thing though, is you’ve still been going out of your way to do stuff like this for me, and I… haven’t been the greatest about doing the same for you.”

“Kurt, I don’t need you to—” 

“I know, you don’t need me to do things like this for you everyday or anything but… I also know that I do need to work on making more time for us sometimes. So…”

“So…breakfast in bed today?”

“Breakfast in bed, and I am all yours today. No distractions of any kind, just us today.”

“I love you,” Blaine says, leaning forward to press a quick, syrup-flavored kiss to his lips. 

“Love you too. Oh! One more thing.” He stretches over to his nightstand to pull a little blue box, much like the red one sitting on the dresser, from the drawer. 

“What are you…” Blaine wonders aloud in a mix of confusion and amusement.

“Blaine, you gave me a promise ring before we had even been dating for a year. And you’ve still held every promise you made me then, no matter what we’ve been through since. This is long overdue from me.” 

A smile creeps across Blaine’s face as he gently takes the box from Kurt’s hands and opens it to look at the ring made of old sheet music inside. “What are you promising?”

“To keep sharing our lives together like this. To support you through whatever opportunities come our way. To really communicate, even when it gets hard for us. To…make you breakfast in bed at least twice a year. To be a team in life. Mostly to always remind you how loved you are.” 

Blaine pulls him into a kiss that feels like a promise itself, one they both know but can’t quite put into words. And the rest of breakfast gets pushed aside so they can keep sharing unspoken promises like that.

🌺 A game with stunning layout or visual design.

CBR+PNK by Emanoel Melo is stunning. The original digital layout was already amazing, and I backed the Kickstarter for the augmented edition—it was actually the first time I ever shelled out for a physical edition of a RPG during crowdfunding.

I will unhesitatingly say that CBR+PNK's design runs circles around the Cyberpunk 2077 video game, Cyberpunk: RED, and pretty much every other piece of cyberpunk media design I've seen, from color choice and font choice to product packaging.

I also think segmenting the information into several different pamphlets was brilliant: it means no individual component is trying to do too much, so each can be customized in a way that elevates the whole game.

Clayton Notestine did a great Twitter thread on the original edition that is more articulate and specific than I can ever hope to be and I agree with his review.

📖 My favorite class or playbook from a game.

Going with Our Haunt by @temporalhiccup! My favorite Our Haunt playbook is The Betrayed: it's so sharp and tragic. The lure is one of the highlights for me:

I love that the or of the lure gives the other players these two bifurcated options to set The Betrayed either a) lean into their more violent impulses (either by hurting someone or responding badly to another's shared emotion) or b) have a growth moment where they act as a foil to another's anger by levying a different emotion. It's a whole lot of depth for one sentence.

After the Races by clueing_for_looks has me gnawing on bone every single time it updates, I literally have to condition myself to forget about this fic when it hasn't updated otherwise I will actually go clinically insane.
