Anne Boleyn (c. 1501 or 1507 – 19 May 1536), King Henry VIII's second queen, is often portrayed as a seductress and ultimately the woman responsible for changing the face of religion in England.
In reality, she was a fiercely intelligent and pious woman dedicated to education and religious reform.
But after her arrest and execution on false charges of adultery and incest in May 1536, Henry VIII was determined to forget her memory.
Her royal emblems were removed from palace walls, her sparkling jewels tucked away in dark coffers, and her precious books disappeared from the pages of time.
One of Boleyn’s books that has reappeared is the Book of Hours, a stunning prayer book, printed around 1527 with devotional texts designed to be read throughout the day, features hand-painted woodcuts — as well as a rare example of the queen’s own writing.
In the margins of one of the beautifully decorated pages, she penned a rhyming couplet followed by her signature:
“Remember me when you do pray, that hope doth lead from day to day, Anne Boleyn.”
Tumblr media
The book vanished with Boleyn’s execution in 1536, then resurfaced around 1903 when it was acquired by the American millionaire William Waldorf Astor (31 March 1848 – 18 October 1919) after he purchased Hever Castle, Anne Boleyn’s childhood home in the English countryside.
The hiding place of the disgraced queen’s devotional tome had been a mystery for centuries, until recent research by a university student uncovered hidden signatures that helped trace its path through history.
The discovery
The book’s whereabouts in the 367 years between Boleyn’s death and its reemergence remained puzzling until 2020 when Kate McCaffrey, then a graduate student at the University of Kent working on her master’s thesis about Anne Boleyn’s Book of Hours, found something unexpected in the margins of the book.
“I noticed what appeared to be smudges to the naked eye,” recalls McCaffrey, assistant curator at Hever Castle since 2021.
Intrigued, she borrowed an industrial-strength ultraviolet light and set it up in the darkest room of Hever Castle.
Ultraviolet light is often used to examine historical documents because ink absorbs the ultraviolet wavelength, causing it to appear darker against the page when exposed.
“The words just came through. It was incredible to see them underneath the light, they were completely illuminated,” the curator recalls.
McCaffrey’s theory is that the words were erased during the late Victorian era when it was popular to cleanse marginalia from books or manuscripts.
But thanks to her extraordinary detective work, these erased words turned out to be the key that unlocked the tale of the book’s secret journey from certain destruction at the royal court to safety in the hands of a dedicated group of Boleyn’s supporters.
The guardians
Indeed, various pages throughout the text reveal the names and notations of a string of Kentish women — Elizabeth Hill, Elizabeth Shirley, Mary Cheke, Philippa Gage, and Mary West — who banded together to safeguard Anne's precious book and keep her memory alive.
While it’s unclear how the book was initially passed to these women, Anne Boleyn expert Natalie Grueninger suggests it was gifted by Anne to a woman named Elizabeth Hill.
Elizabeth grew up near Hever Castle, and her husband, Richard Hill, was sergeant of the King’s Cellar at Henry VIII’s court.
There are records of the Hill’s playing cards with the king, and there may have been a friendship between Elizabeth and the queen that prompted Boleyn to pass her prayer book on before her execution.
“This extended Kentish family kept the book safe following Anne’s demise, which was an incredibly brave and bold act considering it could have been considered treasonous,” says Grueninger, podcaster and author of the book The Final Year of Anne Boleyn.
Anne’s Book of Hours was passed between mothers, daughters, sisters, and nieces until the late sixteenth century, when the last name makes its appearance in its margins.
“This story is an example of the women in the family prioritizing loyalty, friendship, fidelity, and a personal connection to Anne,” says McCaffrey.
“The fact that the women have kept it safe is a really beautiful story of solidarity, community, and bravery.”
The book, currently on display at Hever Castle, is a touchstone of the enigma that was Anne Boleyn.
Castle historian and assistant curator Owen Emmerson points out that the book contains Anne’s DNA on the pages from where she touched and kissed it during her daily devotions.
“This was a really beloved possession of hers,” says Emmerson.
“Because of what happened to Anne Boleyn, we don’t have a vast amount of information in Anne’s own words. But the physical remnants of her use of the book, and the construction of that beautiful little couplet, have her identity in them.”
While Anne’s Book of Hours has finally found its way home, the research into this intriguing historical mystery is not yet over.
McCaffrey continues to chart the book’s provenance through the centuries to find out where it was hiding all this time.
The discovery of the inscriptions illuminates the book’s furtive journey, providing us with a glimpse into the controversy, loyalty, and fascination that Anne Boleyn has engendered for the past 500 years.

What is beautiful is good and who is good will soon be beautiful. - Sappho of Lesbos
fuck it. higher class english woman from a jewish-italian family and her cornish childhood friend-turned-housemaid that slowly fell in love over the 1910s.
on a more personal note, i don't think i can describe the big old smile on my face when i saw the antique wheelchair from @lilis-palace and the accompanying poses. disability related cc is few and far between, and finding historical disability related cc is like finding a dolphin in the desert. disabled people have always been here, and will always be here.
we've existed throughout history! shanidar one was a neanderthal who had brain damage and possible paralysis, and is estimated to have lived to be between thirty-five and forty-five – pretty old for a neanderthal! disabled people show up often in medieval and biblical texts. the greek god hephaestus is famously described as "lame," "deformed," and/or "impaired". various disabled bodies are portrayed in ancient egyptian art. some people with developmental/learning disabilities were honored by western european courts in the renaissance and believed to be closer to god. closer to the time period portrayed in this post, rosa may billinghurst was known as the "cripple suffragette" and was involved in near constant rallying for women's rights. disabled people are overlooked in studies and perceptions of history for so many reasons; mistreatment, abuse, erasure, eugenics, different ways of categorizing and labelling disabilities, and simply being lost to time and translation. but we've always existed. for every iconic figure of disability history, there's hundreds more who simply existed and had their lives forgotten.
there's names you know like helen keller, frida kahlo, franklin d. roosevelt, and names you don't. if anything i've said at all has interested you, here are a few more notable disabled people from history and modernity to research if you'd like: brad lomex, wilma mankiller, niccolò paganini, ivar the boneless, and barbara jordan.

How did Link's dad become a commander?
OOOOH yes!! That is a story and a half to tell!
I dubbed this story as "The Yiga Conspiracy". And it is partially inspired by HW: Age of Calamity!
Particularly with the Yiga Incident quest in the town at the base of the Great Plateau and involves Astor who is a Hylian priest in the BotW timeline but was slowly corruped by the leaking Malice/Gloom. Especially after receiving a divine prophecy of the Calamity's return that earned him the title of "Prophet" and later "Fortune teller".
And this is what Astor looks like:
Tumblr media
-
So how Link's dad - Jun Satoru - became the Commander of the Royal Guard started with his first meeting with Astor when Link was 6-7 years old.
At the time, Link's mother - Selene Somerset - had passed away from a deadly sickness. And around the same time, the Queen of Hyrule (aka Zelda's own mother) had also suddenly passed away. Jun was already a Royal Guard knight around this time but due to the Queen's sudden death, Jun was having a hard time finding a Hylian priest to perform the funeral rites for his wife's burial. And that's where he met Astor who offered his services.
Jun did recognise Astor as the "Prophet" and one of the advisers tin the Royal Court. He was surprised that Astor wanted to help him when many of the Bishops and Priests were busy with preparing for the Queen's funeral. Astor simply said that the Queen's passing wasn't his sole priority and that there were others like Jun and his family who are also going through their own losses. And he simply wanted to help.
After the funeral and cremation, Jun thanked Astor for his services and gained the impression that Astor, despite his prestige role and title, the Hylian Priest was a quiet and reserved man who was diligent with his faith.
Fast forward to 4-5 years later...
Jun has raisen up the ranks of the Royal Guards and has been promoted to becoming the Commander's assistant / right-hand man. The Commander around this time was an older man named Garrett Louton ( @garryktevar's OC) and he looks like this:
Tumblr media
At the time, there was a raise of monster activity as well as sightings of Yiga activity near and around Central Hyrule with rumours that they plan to target members of the Royal Family. So Commander Garrett had put Jun in charge of investigating the Yiga Clan and their movements.
During the 5th Death Anniversary of the Queen, although a small private affair for King Rhoam and his then 11 year old daughter, Princess Zelda. Jun was present during the small ceremony as one of the Royal Guard knights in charge of their security. It was around this time that he met Astor again. This time, Astor was a Bishop and looked more sickly than the last time Jun saw him.
After the event, Jun noticed that Bishop Astor started to pay more attention to him for whatever reason. And then the stranger and deadlier encounters started happening. And in one incident, Jun was ambushed by a group of Yiga Assassins, disguised as regular civilians within the walls of the Castletown. Something about him being "the prophesied Hero". Jun however was able to deal with the Assassins with his own Flurry Rush ability.
Though an interrogation, Jun finds out that these Yigas were taking orders from a figure named the "Fortune Teller" and after some detective work, he was able to shadow one disguised Yiga member into the abandoned underground sections beneath Castletown and found the Yiga's hidden Castletown base.
Along with Astor, who appears just like his AoC versions and was holding the same Ancient Gear Orb that was glowing with Malice.
With this new and shocking information, Jun reports to Commander Garrett about Astor's true nature and allegience with the Yiga Clan. The Commander then reports to the King who was just as shocked by the betrayal and orders for Bishop Astor's arrest for treason. Jun was put in charge of Bishop Astor's arrest and confronts him in the Catherdral in Castletown.
But when the Bishop was confronted, it was then Astor decided to reveal his true character and unleash his Malice powers. And this display of corruptive power was the signal to the Yiga Incident in Castletown where multiple members of the Yiga, disguised as civilians, began to attack the town.
When this happened, a 10 year old Link and his sister, Aria were also in Castletown with their Uncle Rakurai. They were there to visit their Dad in Castletown from their hometown of Hateno Village when they all got caught up in the sudden Yiga attack. Their Uncle Rakurai - who was a fast moving Army courier - was quick to protect his niece and nephew.
At some point, as Jun rushes through the now besieged town to got back to the Castle, he meets up with Rakurai and Aria but Link was missing...
Tumblr media
...Link had been cornered to an dead end alley by a pair of Yiga Assassins and was only holding a wooden sword. When his Dad, Jun comes to his rescue and was able to take down the Yiga Assassins in a blink of an eye. To Link's awestruck amazement, to see how fast and powerful his Dad was.
Once he was sure that his two kids are safe, Jun and his fellow Royal Guard immediately rushed back into the Castle which was also inflicted by Yiga assassins who disguised themselves as servants and low-ranked soldiers. But thanks to Jun's earlier investigations, the Royal Guard knights under the directive of Commader Garrett were able to quell much of their efforts but there have been a few close calls including one incident where Princess Zelda had to be whisked away by Sheikah warriors.
In the end, under King Rhoam's lead, they confronted the now Malice-powered Astor in the Great Hall area with both Commander Garrett and Jun along with a bunch of Royal Guard and Army knights to confront the corrupted Astor who was using his Malice Gear-Orb to summon monsters and Malice clones of soldiers.
It was a hard fought battle where Commander Garrett was severely injured after taking a hard blow from a Malice attack.
And it was during this fight that Jun finds out why Astor was so fixated on him - and it was from a brief vision that Astor foresaw of a future Jun holding the fabled "Sword that Sealed the Darkness".
But in the end, King Rhoam ends the fight when he destroyed Malice Gear-Orb. The corrupted artefact's destruction caused Astor's body to be consumed by the Malice from within and implodes into ashes. (Ganondorf's laugh echoing in air).
And that ends the Yiga Conspiracy Incident.
In its aftermath, the remaining Castletown-based Yiga members were either arrested or fled to their main base in the Gerudo Desert. Commander Garrett, due to his injuries, was forced to retire and chose Jun to be his successor as the new Commander of the Royal Guard.
And that's the story of how Link's Dad became the Commander.
Link was 11 years old when he was present in the small ceremony for his Dad becoming the new Royal Guard Commander. And was determined to become a powerful knight just like him!
One year later... Link found the Master Sword.

The fun thing about reading books about old Hollywood and then watching old movies is knowing that Sheridan Whiteside from The Man Who Came to Dinner and Waldo Lydecker from Laura are based on the same guy: Alexander Woollcott, who was just that queer (ace, gay, homoromantic? who knows), and how Hollywood was scared that having Monty Woolly play him would possibly make him SO GAY that Middle America might twig to it and that was a legit concern.
Also it's knowing that one of the two writers of the play this is based on was mentioned in the diary of I think Mary Astor and that diary entry was *read aloud in court* in her husband's divorce proceedings against her because she describes sex with him and anyway, he made her come five times.
Is this knowledge useful in any way? NOPE. But it's in my brain. and useless because I can't remember if mr five times was kaufman or hart.
Anyway.

Gilded Age, 02x06, Warning Shots. My thoughts...
Turner can go fuck herself! Seriously her revenge doesn't go the way she wants it to, so her next is to steal Bertha box at Met. By getting some getting some old money people to go to new opera house she has some cojones. Hoe I don't think so! I love that George set everything right again, don't mess with his wife! Good man! Can someone, but Bertha please expose Turner for who she really is, a two bit hoe lady's maid that tryed pathetically to get her bosses husband to sleep with her. She'll be dropped out of high society on her ear!
The word frenemies should of been invented to describe Bertha and Mrs. Astor's "friendship". I swear the moment Gladys said 'I thought you were friends' to Bertha, frenemies started flashing in my head in neon red lol.
Omg Marian, I felt so horrible for her put on spot like that in front of everyone. He didn't even court her or anything! Oscar at least kissed the girl he's trying to convince. He's gay for crying out loud, can't imagine kissing a woman high on list of things to do but he did damn it! Marian and Dashiell haven't even done that, let alone gone a true date or anything. I do like him, it just feels like he's jump the gun alot. It seems like he's looking more for a mother for his daughter than an actual wife. Which isn't cool dude! I do like how Marian got around saying yes, that was creative.
How cruel to do that to Aunt Ada and Luke. It's just evil! I just bust into tears. She finally finds her person only to have this happen. Aunt Ada has the purest of hearts she and Luke don't deserve this!! All I know is there better be a goddamn miracle happen and he lives!!! When Aunt Ada comes down stairs and Aunt Agnes is waiting for her just being her big sister. I couldn't take it, I started sobbing right along with Aunt Ada. Because not matter what Aunt Agnes said or does she loves her little sister.
I really don't like what their doing with Peggy and her boss! This week I'm liking she's all get away you're married. Just hope it stays that way. Because other wise it's just going to come off as badly for both characters. I really don't like her boss! Beyond he's already married! All I know is if I heard the line my wife doesn't understand me like you do. I might scream!
Ok I'm so confused what Oscar is up with the investment. I am glad he moved in direction that might lead to something more then friendship. I do like them together.
Can George please be a good man to his workers. He's such a good man in so many other respects. When he was in the head of labor union house it was easy to see he cared. Especially the fact that son worked at the plant or that the children didn't go school or have one to go to. He's not like the guy that works for him. George isn't a heartless, unfeeling, subhuman who would of gladly killed all those men and not even blinked an eye. So I'm hoping we'll see George do the right by working with the labor union to come with deal that works with for both sides. Also see build a school, George Russell is a fictional character after all why not make him like say Milton Hershey who really champion for his workers, build them homes, schools, a hospital and everything else in Hershey, Pennsylvania so they could work more easily at his plant. Because it's like we can him wanting do that. He stop those soldiers from shooting on the striking workers, where the other dude would of been happy with countless die and wouldn't of cared, he'd all been price of doing business he's just subhuman!
I think it so amazing what Jack did with clock! I definitely don't think he shouldn't give up. Love how everyone in the house expects one believe in him and gave him the money to go to patton office.
Can we take a minute to talk about Armstrong. They show us how horrible her mother is ok I can get that, but there are people with horrible parents that don't become that. I'm living proof of that! So what else is her deal!?! Because she's one dimensional at this point, even after them showing us her mother it's still impossible to have any empathy or simple care for her. She's just the most bitter, jaded, miserable character of the whole series. If anyone would be entitled to feel that way it would be Peggy's, her baby son died but she's nothing like that. So I hope they give us more on Armstrong character. Because I'm so tried of her being a buzz kill, shit Aunt Agnes isn't that bad!! When she said that stuff when Jack's patton get approved, truthfully I just really wanted to slap her. Because being cruel and horrible is a choice, it's abusive. It's not because of how she was raised with her mother if that was case she's be like to everyone. She's not, if she was like that with say Aunt Agnes her ass would of been fired by now. She's selective on who she's abusive too.
I'm over Mr. McAllister playing both side! I feel he needs to be loyal to one side now. I of course I want it to Bertha's. personally find Mrs. Astor too arrogant, overblown, way too many people been kissing her ass for so long that thinks she just be a bitch to everyone. Or that her personality because outside her daughter we haven't seen her be truly nice to anyway not ever Mr. McAllister. It's she walks in a room she just expects them all just to kiss her ass. Where Bertha generally nice to people, especially her staff. Which is one of things I do really love about her. I do wish be less shape with Gladys. She keep Gladys in a golden box than snap at her when she doesn't understand something. It's like Bertha you only have yourself to blame if Gladys doesn't understand these things. Chill woman! Gladys looked so hurt by Bertha words and tone. I understand that feeling very well. I would really love to see a scene where Gladys stands up to Bertha when she snaps at her and Bertha realize what she's doing. And they have a moment where Bertha said she's going to stop doing that. Because we have seen it in her Bertha way she does truly love both her children deeply.
I do have to say I want more Bertha in last two episodes she's been seriously lacking. Or at least it felt lacking to me. I know there are bunch of other story lines going on and need they need equal attention but I still want more Bertha!!

Wyndclyffe Mansion
Located at 25 Wynclyffe Court, a private road off Mill Road, in Rhinebeck, New York, Wyndclyffe is in a National Historic Landmark District. Built in 1853 and abandoned since 1950. This place is thought to have inspired the term "Keeping up with the Joneses".
This mansion was purchased by the wealthy socialite Elizabeth Jones in 1853 as a summer house. A cousin to the Astors and aunt to Edith Wharton, Jones occupied a space in the upper echelons of New York high society. In 1853 she had built for herself this gothic mansion in the sleepy hamlet of Rhinecliff, a hundred miles up the Hudson River. The mansion was eluded to in both of Wharton's novels, “A Backward Glance” and “Hudson River Bracketed.”
The 24 bedroom gothic mansion had towers and gables and arched windows. It was so grand that it prompted a ‘building boom’ as all neighbors started upgrading their houses, and the saying “Keeping up with the Joneses” was born.
Elizabeth Jones never married, and after her death, the mansion’s later owners fell foul of the Great Depression, until in 1950, the house was abandoned for good.
Update ~ May, 2023: Town Board members have approved the stabilization plan for the Wyndclyffe mansion in an effort to move forward with the restoration of the 170-year-old deteriorating relic of pre-Civil War extravagance.

The prayerbook of Catherine of Aragon and Anne Boleyn
Catherine and Anne both owned a copy of the same printed Book of Hours produced in Paris by renowned French printer Germain Hardouyn in about 1527, a year in which Henry VIII had already proposed to Anne and was pushing to annul his marriage to Catherine. Now, for the first time, these valuable items are both on display at Hever Castle, Anne’s former childhood home in southeast England. For centuries Catherine and Anne have been pitted against each other as love rivals with their differences celebrated. The exhibition aims to show the similarities between the two women. Kate McCaffrey, Hever Castle’s assistant curator, says:
“The ownership by both of Henry’s first two wives of a copy of the same edition holds hugely intriguing implications for their relationship with one another and their book ownership. Both Catherine and Anne are well known for being highly educated women who owned and used many books and certainly had access to multiple copies of Books of Hours.Yet their connection to one specific edition is different. It is a connection that comes from a pivotal moment in the English court when Catherine’s star was waning and Anne’s rising. Anne owning a copy of the same edition as Catherine is surely, if nothing else, an emulation of, and aspiration to, the royal status of queen which Anne herself would hold in only seven years’ time”.
Although Anne’s book went missing for many years, in 1910 American tycoon William Waldorf Astor snapped it up after buying Hever Castle. Catherine’s manuscript was acquired at the beginning of the 20th century by another millionaire, John Pierpont Morgan, who kept it in his library in New York. Historians know that Hever’s printed Hours was Anne’s due to the survival of her signed inscription, ‘remember me when you do pray that hope doth led from day to day’. In the Morgan’s printed Hours, Catherine’s ownership is signified by an inscription in a sixteenth-century hand that reads ‘thys boke was good quen Katrin boke’. Thus, it appears as though Catherine herself did not write within her copy of the book, but she certainly owned it.

In the years after the disgrace of both queens, their books were kept safe in the hands of those loyal to them. The Hever’s printed Hours, which Anne may have taken to her execution, was protected by a group of women local to the Boleyns at Hever, whilst the Morgan’s printed Hours was passed to Catherine’s lady-in-waiting, Margaret Coke, and so seems to have been similarly protected by those devoted to her.
A comparative analysis of Hever’s and the Morgan’s Hours showed clear differences in the decoration of the book, signifying a level of customization within the illuminating workshop overseen by Hardouin himself. The Anne’s copy features a greater level of decoration than Catherine’s. Why Catherine and Anne both owning a copy of the same printing? A possibility would be that Henry gifted these books to the two women, the king decided to give his wife the less decorated copy and her lady-in-waiting the better one. Yet it is equally possible that Queen Catherine herself ordered these books for her own use and for the use of members of her household. Group reading, particularly amongst educated women, was a common pastime and it is likely that these books were for the purpose of reading and praying together. Another possibility is that both Catherine and Anne heard of the production of these books, and both requested a copy.

Hostess ads have always occupied a world that is utterly alien to our world of logic and sense. This is especially true in many of the Marvel ads, especially the Iron Man and Thor ones
But I think this might well be the peak
The absolute pinnacle of the inspired nonsense that this universe embodies
This man comes to Wonder Woman saying he’s looking for a “Mysterious failed legendary idol” which sounds like something the writer came up with by just smashing the letter keys on their typewriter and never revising what came out as a result of it
He concludes by saying “I must have it because I MUST HAVE IT” which only furthers my belief that this “Script” was written in a single cocaine fueled hour by a writer putting words together and hoping they’d make up a sentence
Even Wonder Woman seems to barely be able to believe this sequence of events is happening to her and this is a woman whose fought Giant Communist Eggs, magically enchanted cat women and people who can alter the physics of the universe using a metal triangle so when she thinks that what your saying is ridiculous that peaks its some top tier nonsense
Petula, who seems to be incredibly thirsty for Wonder Woman takes her to meet this random woman with a terrible supervillain name who starts laughing a laugh that no one actually has while babbling about how cupcakes came from a magic idol and continuing this stories Word Salad storytelling style by saying “Great historical value for Astor...but I’M interested in what it’s worth!” (what?)
Then Astor, the guy who hired Wonder Woman is randomly there in this warehouse which is located in “The Uh-Oh District” (what?????) and he’s got armfuls of Hostess cupcakes for no clear or lucid reason
Then it turns out the idol that just got smashed wasn’t even the one that this story was about so what the hell was it? What the hell was ANY of this?
Then as these three characters start randomly monologuing about their love for that moist devils food cake completely unprompted Wonder Woman wraps them in her lasso and announces her plan to take them all to jail (w h a t????????)
WHAT
WHAT CRIME WAS COMMITED HERE
Diana I know you sometimes find things about the world outside Themyscira puzzling but you can’t acctually jail people under charges of Aggravated Cupcake Appreciation and Ownership of a Weird Statue With Intent to Babble Nonsense About It
Not even Texas is going to hear that case in court
If anyone can explain to me what the hell I just read you will have my undying gratitude
