Match Review: Bayern München 4-3 Manchester United
Lets be honest, reds. Defeat was almost certainly on the cards and a 1-goal deficit is perhaps a best case scenario.
Tumblr media
In classic Ten Hag Era fashion, United started off looking competitive. We were more patient than against Brighton and spent good spells in Bayern's half, but that... didn't last [see below]
Tumblr media
Beleaguered goalkeeper Andre Onana conceded what can only be described as a howler - on the back of a stream of constant criticism since the start of the season. An easy shot going in? Why does that seem familiar? Oh yeah, De Gea.
Kudos to Onana though. He actively requested to speak to the press post-match to apologise for his mistake, citing a good team performance and his failure as the reason for a missed result. I think he's wrong on that count - it was a team failing - but the humility to apologise and be accountable is an admirable trait.
Just four minutes later came Bayern's second goal; a well worked play around our box that was SO similar to goals scored by Brighton and Arsenal that either Lindelof/Casemiro aren't doing their jobs OR the coaching staff need to fix something in training because that was predictable and basic.
Tumblr media
Despite limited service, Rasmus Hojlund was one of two (maybe three) bright sparks in United's performance. The Champions League debutant (we don't count an Atalanta qualifier) scored from a rare Marcus Rashford pass to bring the score back to 2-1.
Optimism suddenly. Energy. Vitality. Desire. United woke up! And then the Christian Eriksen/Casemiro pivot was bypassed yet again, Munich put it on United, and Eriksen conceded a silly but unfortunate handball - which led to a Harry Kane penalty and a 3-1 lead.
United never looked like the better team after the first 10 minutes, nor competitive after the first 20, but credit to the likes of Reguilon (who put in a big shift) and Pellistri (perhaps his first United start? away at Bayern?) for their determination and work rate through the match. Basic things, but if others aren't doing it it's remiss not to credit them.
Manchester United hung on in but freshly deflated didn't look like a renewed threat. Despite this, we some how scored the most scuffed goal from Casemiro. 3-2, game back on, right?
Wrong. Bayern push again and bang in a tidy 4th. Depression. But wait, then United run up the other end, final minute, and Bruno puts in a peach of a free kick for Casemiro to head home. 4-3, with 10 seconds of play left.
Tumblr media
To the neutral, this was an interesting game, but it wasn't a good match. Had Bayern been in any semblance of form they could have snotted United 6 or 7 nil. That said, had United not had so many injuries and also been in form... I reckon we could have won. Were both teams in form then it would really have been a classic ECL clash. This is the nature of football. Shit happens, teams adapt.
There were few positives for United to draw from that match, but there were things confirmed: Eriksen cannot do it in the big games anymore. Casemiro needs a rest. Martinez/Lindelof needs work. Dalot is lucky AWB is out injured. Rashford needs to stop sulking and pass more. McTominay needs a special 1 on 1 coach to teach him movement and positioning because the man is allergic to receiving a pass.
The good news is that Mount, Varane, Amrabat and Mainoo are all close to a return. Will any be back for Burnley? We'll see, but that's the new focus and a must-win - potentially even a relegation six-pointer based on current form... jesus christ.

Gli Azzurri | Part 7 | Possible European Push
#FM24 #GliAzzurri Part 7: Possible European Push. #EmpoliFC's good form, after some common GK issues, sees us enter a fight for European places with Atalanta. Can we lead @EmpoliFC into European football? Read here:
Empoli FC had reached heady heights, enjoying a 7th-place position heading into 2026. That was despite having already lost three times more home matches than last season and struggling slightly at the start of the campaign. Big news off the pitch saw a protracted takeover finally completed on 20 January and, obviously, the new chairperson Mattia Ascani saw no need to provide any much-needed…

Last song: good question… one of the new ones by Scorpions I think (when you know where you come from).
Last show: The order (on Netflix).
Currently watching: nothing. I need recommendations.
Currently reading: Ultra: The underworld of Italian football (got that one after finishing ‘The working hands of a Goddess: the tactics, culture and community behind Gasperini’s Atalanta’).
And for a lighter read, Ellana’s trilogy by Pierre Bottero.
Current obsession: ignoring the fact that my holidays are over in 2 days and I’m back to work on Monday? Football and cycling are happening so that’s enough obsession for me (hopefully if the weather is good I’ll be able to play/ride back home).

Man Utd new signing Rasmus Hojlund set to be denied his five favourite shirt numbers
Tumblr media
Man Utd new signing Rasmus Hojlund set to be denied his five favourite shirt numbers Rasmus Hojlund, who is on his way to join Manchester United, will probably face disappointment as he won't be able to choose from his top five preferred shirt numbers at Old Trafford. Instead, the Danish footballer will have to opt for a jersey number he has never worn during his time as a professional player. It seems that Manchester United has potentially found a solution to their striker issues. Erik ten Hag entered the summer transfer window with a strong desire to bolster their attacking options. However, due to financial constraints, high-profile strikers like Harry Kane and Victor Osimhen were considered too expensive for the Red Devils. Consequently, their focus shifted to Rasmus Hojlund, who has just completed a single season in Serie A with Atalanta. Despite Rasmus Hojlund's limited experience, Manchester United has agreed to pay Atalanta a substantial fee of up to £72 million for the 20-year-old. This significant investment indicates that the club sees great potential in him, and he will likely have an excellent opportunity to become Erik ten Hag's first-choice striker. While Hojlund has previously worn the No 9 shirt during his time at Sturm Graz, it appears doubtful that he will be able to secure the same number at Manchester United. The availability of the No 9 shirt at United might be uncertain, and he may have to consider other options for his jersey number at Old Trafford. Anthony Martial is presently wearing the shirt, and while Manchester United is open to considering offers for him, the limited choices for a replacement striker indicate that Ten Hag will probably retain him beyond the summer transfer window. Hojlund transferred from Austria to Italy last year and now sports the No. 17 jersey at Atalanta. Nevertheless, this number might not be available for him at Manchester United. Fred has been wearing the No. 17 since his move from Shakhtar Donetsk in 2018. The Brazilian was a key player for Ten Hag last season, featuring in 56 matches across all competitions. During this summer, Manchester United is willing to let him go if the right offer comes in. They are aiming to secure £20 million for the 30-year-old player but have not yet received an offer that meets their valuation. Hojlund previously wore the No. 28 shirt during his final season at Copenhagen, but it seems that number might not be available for him at Manchester United. Facundo Pellistri made a positive impact in several appearances towards the end of the last season while wearing the No. 28 jersey. He continued to don the same number in recent friendlies against Arsenal and Real Madrid. On the international stage, Hojlund wears the No. 11, which is currently occupied by Mason Greenwood at Manchester United. If Greenwood returns to action after his suspension, he is likely to retain the No. 11 shirt. Hojlund has also worn the No. 21 for Denmark, but Antony is the current holder of that number at Manchester United and is not expected to give it up anytime soon. As a result, Hojlund might have to wait for other players to leave the club in order to secure a suitable jersey. The only available numbers below 30 are the No. 4, No. 13, and No. 15. The Striker Problem
United need a new centre forward to lead the line and bang in some goals, but there seems to be a shortage of ideal strikers available with Daniel Levy more likely to go to Jupiter than sell us Harry Kane, Osimhen too expensive, Håland at City, and an array of hot prospect young talent not quite ready.
Surely there's someone out there suitable for United though, right? Right?!
Tumblr media
Rasmus Højlund - The 20 year old, pictured above, is THE number 1 striker target for Manchester United at present. A deal is reportedly in the works, with a loan back of Mason Greenwood to fill the void left.
Dubbed the next Håland (despite only being 2 years younger), Højlund is tall, fast, agile, and technically gifted. He also likes to stay central ala Van Nistelrooy, rather than drift wide. This discipline is very important to Erik Ten Hag with an array of floating forwards in Rashford, Sancho et al.
16 goals and 7 assists in 42 games is a fair return at Atalanta, and with the likes of Bruno Fernandes and Mason Mount behind him next season... perhaps he could do even more in the Premiership.
Mehdi Taremi - He might be 30 years old, but Taremi could be a great senior striker to lead the line and act as mentor to a young striker like Højlund. He has 31 goals and 14 assists in 51 appearances this season gone, with 5 in the Champions League for Porto. A short 3-year deal could do the job for United as an interim while Erik Ten Hag continues his squad overhaul, buying time for academy prospects like McNeill and Hugill to step up.
Tumblr media
Gonçalo Ramos - The 22 year old had a banger World Cup, a good season with Benfica, and a whoopsie moment with a... private video leaked onto the internet. PR gaff aside, 27 goals and 12 assists in 47 games is very promising. A good choice, though it's unclear if he could step up to the physicality of the Prem.
Randal Kolo Muani - 23 goals and 17 assists in 46 games. Nice work from the 24 year old in the Bundesliga and German Cup. RKM is rumoured the other main striker preference for Ten Hag - potentially even WITH Rasmus Højlund if funds work out. At 4 years his senior they would both be young prospects for the future, but with Muani having just that little extra maturity to show results quicker - and perhaps warrant a starting CF position.
Loïs Openda - Linked with Leipzig to replace Chelsea signing Nkunku, Openda is a promising young striker in Ligue 1 and a potential gamble for United if they were tight on budget.
Aleksandar Mitrović - Premier League proven striker with Newcastle (hmm) and Fulham (okay he turned good) but perhaps might now hate us after his red card in the 3-1 defeat to United. He's big, strong, and fearless though. He'd be an asset.
Amine Gouiri - Gouiri is also a young striker in Ligue 1, like Openda, but his game is much more rounded. He is the Complete Forward, to borrow Football Manager parlance. This could suit Ten Hag's forward pressing game, but he might lack the dedicated striking discipline needed for United at present.
Ivan Toney - Another Premier League proven forward ala Mitro. He's big, strong, and confident. He doesn't lack pace and has that striker's instinct knack to just bag goals consistently. Dependability is huge, and I think bids might come in regardless of his betting ban come January. I doubt it'll be from United, but you never know. He'd do bits for us, Arsenal, and Chelsea - all who need a true CF.
Dusan Vlahovic - Strong at Fiorentina, Vlahovic only managed 14 goals and 4 assists in 42 appearances this season. Rumour has it that The Old Lady are willing to part ways, especially considering money troubles rumoured, but all my spidey senses are tingling and saying do not buy when it comes to the Serbian. Fellow Serb and United great Nemanja Vidic, interviewed on Rio Ferdinand's FIVE channel, said he wouldn't be suited to United, and it's fair to see why given the struggles as a lone forward for Juventus. He needs a dedicated no10 or strike partner to play off. He'd be fantastic alongside someone like Joao Felix, and that wouldn't be an impossible loan acquisition, but United style would be more likely to use Felix as a deep striker or false 9 with Rashford and RW overlapping ala Salah and Mane to Firmino.
