An incredible message that Athletic Club player Asier "The buffalo" Villalibre gave yesterday at the celebration:

"Well I don't wanna be too boring so, firstly, thanks everybody for coming. And secondly, well, there are so many people here, so many young people, and it's always said that we [the players] have a big influence so the least I can say is never forget one of the most important pillars of Athletic: that is, Basque. You don't know, you don't really know how beautiful it is to hear you all speaking Euskara in San Mamés [Athletic Club stadium], in Bilbo, on the streets, anywhere so, sincerely: to the youngsters, keep speaking Euskara; to the adults, keep teaching in Euskara; and let's keep that pillar as a living one. Long live EH!"

Xavi leaving barca?

In honor of Xavi's birthday, let's chat about his future with the team.

It could be better for Barca's head coach, Xavi, after the shocking loss against Athletic Club in the Copa Del Rey quarter-finals. Barca should be competing at a more intense and dominating level than how we currently see the team. While mainstream players such as Gavi and Raphinha are out on injury, the team's dynamic should be fine. Of course, their presence is important, but with all the other skilled players on the team, it is weird to find that we can not beat a team like Athletic Club.

Separate from this, though, we have to wonder if Xavi is being pushed out of the club. As a club, Barca is always expected to be at the top of the table and more competitive against Real Madrid, whom we last beat in the season. This is not to say the team is not winning, but is it enough? I think owners want Barca to be like last season's Man City team (continuous wins and lots of trophies), but they are not, and if they suffer in the Champions League, I can not imagine a promising future for Xavi with the team. What do you think about this possible departure?

hello from the uk! i'm curious, is football very popular in basque country? i ask because of the twenty football clubs in the english premier league, three have basque managers (unai emery at aston villa, mikel arteta at arsenal and andoni iraola at bournemouth)

Some fun facts:

the top scorer in La Liga recieves trophy Pichichi. Rafael Moreno Aranzadi "Pichichi" was a Basque player for Athletic Club in the 1910s-20s.

the first ever football match of La Liga back in 1929 was a Basque derby: Athletic Club VS Real Sociedad

Euskadi is the only autonomous community to have a team from every region playing in the top level league: Bizkaia has Athletic Club, Gipuzkoa has Real Sociedad, Araba has Deportivo Alavés. Nafarroa also has Osasuna. We used to have up to 5 teams playing, but sadly Eibar was relegated to La Liga Hypermotion (2nd category).

Basque team Athletic Club is among the only 3 teams - with Real Madrid and Barça - that are still unrelegated. The achievement is bigger because Athletic Club plays with locals only.

out of the 24 players of the NT chosen for the qualifications for the 2024 Eurocup, 8 are Basque. That's 33% of the team, when Euskadi and Nafarroa mean just 6% of the population in the Spanish state. Not bad!
