70: Material Girls // Leather

You know how weed is now supposedly 26 times as strong as it was in the ‘70s and two dab hits would’ve caused, like, prime Ozzy Osbourne to disintegrate on the spot? Many of today’s no wave/post-punk bands make me think of that: they’re not breaking much new ground, but what they are doing is so refined, so well-studied, that the average ones would blow the doors off Max’s Kansas City if someone would only lend them a time machine.

Even by the standards of today’s drugs though, Atlanta’s Material Girls are a carfentanil-grade live act. The instrumentally-poly five-to-six-piece makes fuck music for contortionists and looks great doing it, cycling bass/guitar/brass/keys/vox duties between each song as if to prove some arcane point. If this sponsored Trip Advisor-type review isn’t getting the point across, you should make every effort to see the band (if they even still exist, they haven’t put out anything in five years and hate social media so there’d be no way of knowing).

Leather doesn’t quite live up to the live experience, but it’s leopard-printed and sweat-stinking enough to at least hint at it. Favourites are the comparatively straight-ahead dance punker “Ya Ya” and scuzzy creep “Wade into the Creek.” Remember to always wipe down your PVC after use!
