I call this gifset “proof I’ll happily watch Penelope Keith do anything at all + one shot of Peter Bowles stepping out of Grantleigh’s front door because it parallels so well.”

You Pray, I’ll Row
(My mom and I were watching one of our favorite Britcoms, To the Manor Born.)
Audrey fforbes-Hamilton: “The Indians have a saying: ‘Pray to God, but row away from the rocks.’ You pray, I’ll row.”
My mother: “I love that saying. The Jews have something similar.”
Me: “What’s the Jewish version?”
My mother: “I can’t remember, but it’s the same idea. You know, God helps those who help themselves, that kind of thing.”
Me: “Yeah. I’m just wondering how it would translate to Jewish culture, as opposed to Indians and canoes. . . .”
My mother: “Oh, I see. You mean, something like, ‘Eat the matzah, but watch out for crumbs’ ?”
(Well, crumbs can get stuck in one’s bra. . . .)

Thanks to @omnishambolichologram 's post I've returned to my To the Manor Born obsession again asjfdkj
So um, here are some Sapphic Audrey And Marjory™️ headcanons because I can and because Audrey is bi and Marjory is now officially a lesbian
About the Cynthia Fitzsimmons line: I think Audrey knows (and always has known) herself a lot better than Marjory. Which includes her sexuality; so when Audrey mentioned a crush on a girl, it made Marjory think -- and realise a couple of things about herself.
Internalised homophobia and compulsory heterosexuality are sadly a thing, though, and with Audrey being bi, Marjory just kind of pushed away her attraction to women. She didn’t exactly need a partner for company either. She always had Audrey after all!
Meanwhile, Audrey never really encountered any men she found attractive and just kind of assumed she was a lesbian -- and didn’t care to explore that side of herself, because she knew she had to marry to keep her family estate. Enter Marton.
So when Audrey falls for Richard she’s extra confused because?? she wasn’t even aware she could like men that way? Let alone someone like Richard.
And Marjory subconsciously decides she must like Richard, too, because Audrey likes him. While in reality she’s just the tiniest bit jealous that Audrey’s attention is going to someone else, too, and that Richard gets to have her. She just mistakes all those feelings for a crush, and everyone buys into it.
In time though, when Audrey and Richard are married and Marjory has to finally start looking for some company herself, she begins to remember who she is. And she obviously ends up living in the lodge with her new girlfriend :)

I would love to hear your thoughts about Audrey fforbes-Hamilton and/or ‘To the Manor Born’ generally because I definitely don’t have a massive crush on Penelope Keith as a result of that show and didn’t get waaaayyy too excited about the fact you posted about having a crush on her too. Sorry, if this seems weird or something but I really had to ask because there are so few people that post anything about all this at all.
I'm so sorry for the late (and very long) response to your ask!! Don't worry, it's not weird at all, I'm always delighted to have any reason to talk about Penelope Keith. Ok, I mean, first and foremost, I think To The Manor Born in itself is criminally underrated and absolutely deserves so much more recognition than it gets. You're right, so few people post stuff about it and it makes me sad bc people are missing out on such a good thing and they don't even know it. Like, if anyone out there is looking for a reason to watch it, I think Penelope Keith is enough to start with. Audrey and Richard playing pooh sticks is one of the best, most adorable things I've ever seen tbh and I can't get it out of my head (not that I can honestly say I would want to get it out of my head bc I definitely won't be angry if it stays there forever). But Audrey. Don't even get me started on Audrey bc I promise you that if I really get started, I will never stop. She is sincerely one of my favourite characters and I love her tenacity and just her Audreyness. Idk how else to describe it, she's just so unlike other characters I've come across and I absolutely cannot get enough of her. Also, and ik it's slightly off topic, but the theme tune. I love that it's a Ronnie Hazelhurst one and that you can hear the similarities between it and Yes Minister bc I'm absolutely a sucker for any link between Paul Eddington and Penelope Keith. I love The Good Life soooo much, and I will jump at any chance to be reminded of one of my favourite couples on TV (although that in itself is a slightly complicated matter, but I won't get into that now bc I've already rambled enough). I hope that mess all made sense bc I saw your ask and just started typing furiously and with absolutely zero idea of where I was going!!
