Animal of the Day!
Monterey Sea Lemon (Doris montereyensis)
Tumblr media
(Photo from iNaturalist)
Conservation Status- Unlisted
Habitat- Western North America coast
Size (Weight/Length)- 10 cm
Diet- Sponges; Carrion
Cool Facts- Looking like a mixture of a lemon, a rabbit, and a slug, the Monterey sea lemon is not as cuddly as its appearance. Sea lemons, hence the name, have an extremely acidic and fruity taste that wards off possible predators. These sea slugs have sandpaper-like tongues that can saw through sea sponges as they travel across the ocean floor. Their bright yellow coloration comes from the chromatophores within the sponges they eat. The two ‘ears’ at the front of their head are actually used to taste and smell for carrion to snack on. Monterey sea lemons are hermaphrodites and can mate with any other sea lemon they encounter, both getting pregnant. Releasing two million eggs each, these abundant fellows aren’t disappearing any time soon.
Rating- 13/10 (Nudibranch supremacy.)

This dress in coarse black tulle, placed on light lilac taffeta, is adorned with appliqués embroidered in black taffeta; but one can replace this trimming, which is very difficult to execute, by ready-made applications in lace, either separate or embroidered on illusion tulle: in the latter case, the applications are cut out and attached to the fabric of the dress. On our model, the applications surround the lower edge of the skirt and go up while narrowing on the seams of the fronts; the half-long sleeves, adorned with lace flounces, as well as the left side of the front of the skirt, are completely trimmed with taffeta applications. The tulle bodice, with a pointed neckline in front and behind, is trimmed with rounded lapels in taffeta covered with tulle embroidered with appliqués. The opening is filled with a chemisette in pleated mauve silk muslin, adorned with a similar long tie held in place by ties.

Luna Park razed by fire, Coney Island, August 13, 1944. The next day, the afternoon paper PM had this to say:
"Our photographer climbed up on one of the big slides to get this general view of Luna Park, Coney Island, half of which was razed by fire Saturday afternoon. Arrow points to 'Dragon's gorge' where the blaze started. Loss was estimated at $500,000. When this picture was taken yesterday afternoon, firemen still were spraying the stray sparks in the ruins."
The entrance towers to Luna Park are on the upper left, the Wonder Wheel beyond. The 150-foot Wheel began operation in 1920. The fire destroyed more than half of Luna Park. Although some of the rides were repaired, wartime rationing of building supplies prevented a complete reconstruction. Instead, visitors could view the ruins for ten cents. Luna Park closed completely in 1946.
