Listed: Son of Dribble

Son of Dribble, from Columbus, Ohio, recently had their second album receive the vinyl treatment by the Minimum Table Stacks label, following its digital release last year. “The band’s fuzzy yet morose Velvets-meets-Joy Division garage rock clamor practically screams out for a wider audience and a more robust pressing,” Dusted’s Bryon Hayes wrote in his review of Son of Drib Against the Wind, “so it’s great that the label took the bait.” Since the album’s initial release, the trio of vocalist Andy Clager, guitarist Darren Latanick and drummer Vicky Mahnke, welcomed second guitarist Mike Nosan into the fold and have been busy playing shows and plotting its follow-up. But not so busy that they couldn’t take a moment of their time to share with Dusted readers a list of things that inspire them musically, lyrically and otherwise. Enjoy!

Before recording the album, Andy took a pilgrimage to Walker’s hometown of Hamilton, Ohio (just north of Cincinnati). Checked out the local sculpture park and then found the house that he grew up in. Dug some dirt out of the yard, mixed it into a strawberry milkshake and drank it in an attempt to consume some sort of spirit. A true poet.

Our Life

How We Became

You and Jack met through Neelam one day you were invited out by Neelam to a club based in Atlanta and you happily said yes truly needing a night out.

You were a 21 year old singer your based was similar to Summer Walker and Mariah The Scientist you had a following of 10.5 million followers on Instagram and everyone truly loved your music and your voice and so did a certain rapper from Louisville, Kentucky.

“How long are you gonna be gone for ?” Your little sister Lilly said while looking up from her iPad to look at you. You had custody over your sister after your parents based away she was only 2 years old when they passed so they knowledge of her but you tried your best to show her pictures and videos of them but it was still hard on you Lilly was now 6 years old.

“I’ll be back soon cutie and besides Auntie Victoria will be here.” You told her as you kissed her forehead she pouted at you but nodded.

Once Victoria arrived you go into your car and made your way towards the club Neelam sent you once you arrived you parked in Valet. Once inside the club your mouth opened wide it was so beautiful it really was a luxurious club and you really enjoyed it.

“Y/N I missed you girl !!” Neelam squealed and you giggled you truly loved Neelam’s vibe and energy she was always so sweet towards you and was that second mother figure to you and Lilly as well.

“I missed you too Neelam now let’s get some drinks in because I definitely need it.” You stated as you linked arms with Neelam and you both walked towards the bar halfway through the night you eventually had to much to drink and were sitting down at the vip section you felt as if someone was looking at you and that’s when you looked up as noticed no other than Jack Harlow himself watching you from across the room you blushed but waved at Jack and his face turned red feeling embarrassed he got caught but waved back as well.

“Why don’t you just tell Y/N you got a crush on her Jack instead of being a creep.” Urban stated as he took a drag of his joint and quickly bogged Jack’s slap to the head.

“What if she doesn’t feel the same way Urb I don’t want Y/N thinking I’m a player and a flirt even though that’s what the media displays me as. I really wanna get to know her I wanna make her my girl.” Jack mumbled watching as you giggled at something Neelam said he smiled softly you had the cutest smile he thought and he loved the way your tight black little dress hugged your figure perfectly.

“You never know unless you try Jack and I know you so go over there and make conversation Jack.” Urban encouraged his friend and Jack nodded he got up and made his way over towards you Neelam noticed and poked your leg you looked up and blushed watching as Jack’s talk figure walked over to you his curls bouncing slightly as he walked.

“Hey Neelam hey Y/N” Jack said as he went in a hugged Neelam and hugged you as well.

“Well ima go with Urban I’ll let the both of you be.” Neelam stated she looked back and winked at you knowing you had the biggest crush on Jack.

“I really love your music Y/N your voice is incredible I’d say I’m your biggest fan” jack stated as he laughed and you rolled your eyes playfully.

“Damn really cause you aren’t my favorite rapper I prefer lil baby” you said and laughed loudly as Jack’s jaw dropped you rolled your eyes and pushed him playfully.

“I’m just kidding Jack I love your music especially your old shit and I love Nail Tech” you said and Jack smirked back at you.

“So uh I was wondering do you kinda wanna go out with me sometime I mean it’s honestly up to you Y/N I don’t wanna pressure you.” You smiled at Jack finding it adorable how you were able to make this man blush and flustered without even saying anything you decided to cut him some slack.

“I’d love to go out with you Jack.” You said and Jack shut up instantly and smiled and the both of you talked the rest of the night.

You smiled thinking of that sweet and pure moment with Jack. You and Jack have been together for 6 years you truly loved him and loved every moment with him.

You and Jack were currently getting ready for rehearsals as the two of you were going on tour together when you both announced it your guys fans went crazy as well did the internet the concert showed out in minutes you were going to a total for 20 cities and couldn’t wait.

“Baby girl stop day dreaming and get your cute ass over here so we can rehearse” Jack yelled and you rolled your eyes but got up making your way towards him.

“Yes boss I apologize sir Jackman Harlow” you said playfully and he smiled throwing his arms around your waist and leaning down to kiss your lips you leaned up kissing him back and smiling into the kiss.

“I love you baby girl now common we got a tour to rehearse for” Jack said as he dragged you into the room everyone else were at.

Your tour with Jack was gonna be a crazy one you thought filled with many many adventures and ups and downs of living the life of a celebrity. But you were both ready for whatever came your way.

Headcanons For Being Sarah's BFF and Dating Sam Wilson

Supporting Sarah and the boys while Sam was blipped.

Y/n offered to move in but Sarah refused.

Trying to hide the relationship from Sarah at first

She found out really quickly because she knows you.

Sam worries about you while he’s away with Bucky.

Sam calls you when he can.

Joaquin calling you once and the three of you now have wine and whine nights/ Sarah is invited as well.

The boys really like you, and call you Auntie Y/n.

You help out with homework and projects if it’s something in your wheelhouse.

Zemo tries to taunt Sam with your existence and the danger you would be in if he becomes Captain America.

Z-“All it takes is one time...one time you’re not fast enough. You don’t save her.”

S- “Man, do you ever shut up!”

B-” I could shut him up.”

John Walker tries to set up his wife and Y/n to be friends because it must be hard having hero boyfriends/husbands.

J-” It’d be nice for them.”

S-” Y/n doesn’t like people, and she has a best friend already. My sister.”

J- “Dude, that’s like the one bro code, don’t date your sister’s friends.”

S- “Bro code, are we twelve?”

Being with Sarah when Karli calls.

S- “What?”

K- “Hand the phone to Y/n, now.”

Y/n: “ Sarah, you look like you’re gonna faint.” *takes the phone* Who is this?

K- “Karli, I just need to talk to you.”

Y/n: Well you have my attention.”

Sarah packs up the kids and takes them to your place and spends a few nights after Karli’s threat.

S- “Y/n are you guys okay?”

Y/n: A little shaken, but fine. I’m more pissed than anything.

S-” Take a breath.”

Y/n: Sam if she hurts you I’m wringing her neck. These hands are rated E for Everyone.

S-” Easy, baby girl. I’ll be home soon.”

When Sam returns Y/n tackles him with kisses.

B-” Me next.”

Y/n:*looks up from Sam*

S: In your dreams. *helps Y/n up*

Y/n watches from the porch as Sam’s training.

She puts out the first aid kit when she sees Sam nearly bust it to avoid getting hit by the shield.

After a few hours she comes back out with some lemonade, she pats a spot on the steps beside her. Sam sits with her.

Y/n: I know you don’t need anyone else telling you what to do. But I need you to know that I’ve always thought you’d make a good Captain America.

S: Why is that?*wraps an arm around her.*

Y/n: Your heart. Too damn big for your own good. It’s what they need.

S: They?

Y/n: Yeah, the big three are out there. Someone needs to kick ass.

After the cookout, Y/n stays behind helping the boys make a leftover plate.

S:Can I steal you for a minute?”

Y/n: Sure *Walks with Sam to the boat, he helps her and then joins her. He’s behind her.

S- I’ve been thinking about us.

Y/n: Captain America is going to be a commitment.

S- I’ve never been afraid of commitment. Find it kind of exciting.

Y/n: I understand, Sam, don’t feel bad. I won’t tell Sarah.

S: No, Y/n turn around. I don’t think you understand.

Y/n: Sam I..*she turns around to find Sam on a knee holding a ring.*

S: Will you marry me?

Y/n: Yes.

GoT 8x03 aka The Battle of WinterHELL

I can’t help but feel like this is the episode of missed opportunities and (unintentional) wtf moments. Just a little warning: this will not be the most positive review and I hate that I feel this way about the episode because I know how much work (55 consecutive night shots!) went into creating it but I can’t help but not love it. There was some good stuff in there too, and I’ll mention it but don’t expect hails of praise from this. Also, keep in mind, that I LOVE this show to death and that it’s not my intention to bash it – it’s still the best and most thought-through show I’ve ever seen – but I also need to get all my feeling about this mess out.

They foreshadowed the crypts being unsafe in 8x02 with the subtlety of a sledgehammer and then it turned out that they actually were breached… but it has like no consequences? No one that we know died and there wasn’t even a good close combat scene. Super odd. The whole crypts stuff in general was really … underwhelming.

I was really out there expecting some Sansa x Varys’ (ya know, Varys meeting his Dream Queen) bonding in the crypts but instead I got … another conversation with Tyrion … ok lol, thanks. Next.

On a positive side note, however, if they’d wanted to make Sansa x Tyrion romantic, they would have made a Wight attack her and Tyrion save her, you know this whole thing with her wanting a hero … or to make it a twist Sansa would have saved Tyrion. But D&D noped out of that big times.

Missandei, I love you, but you need to chill.

Alys Karstark, what are you up to? Stayin’ alive and all that … So far, at least.

Why bring Ghost out for 0.2 seconds for no purpose at all? Fighting with the Dothraki? Am I to believe that Ghost wouldn’t be with, um, I don’t know … Arya, Sansa or Bran? I’m sorry I don’t buy that. If you can’t afford or don’t want to spend money on his CGI to give him meaningful scenes THEN DON’T FUCKING SHOW HIM AT ALL! The only theory I have about Ghost being in both episodes since the parentage reveal but not in 8x01 when Jon returns to Winterfell and a Jon x Ghost reunion would have made sense, is that Ghost is a symbol for Jon’s Stark-ness and therefore I suspect that we’ll see him further until it is once and for all revealed that … tamtatatam … Jon wants to stay a Stark. Surprising, right? -.-

My main problem with this episode is that I felt disconnected to it all. Even in the bits where Jaime saved Brienne I felt like they were shot in a way that didn’t evoke emotions in me. Don’t know how to express myself correctly but it was just off. Felt like we were just swiping through the scenery, and over characters but didn’t actually focus on anyone.

That Arya x Walking Dead scene was alright HOWEVER how ‘bout some dialogue instead??

Ok, so the Night King raises the dead but no one has to fight a killed loved one??? (Or, you know maybe they did and I just couldn’t see it …) This is a missed opportunity so big I can’t quite believe it. Maybe it is time for a proper re-watch, idk.

Most of the episode I was wondering what the dragons were up to ... only to realize over and over again that they were up to LITERALLY nothing O.o

I’m forever going to be pissed that when Bran said “You’re a good man. Bye.” He let Theon f*cking die when I was fully expecting him to be like: “You’re a good man, thank you. But now it’s time to go.” I would have felt that. But of course f*cking not. I suppose I did feel that, too.

Would it have killed them to give Jon a decent fighting sequence with the Night King though? Jon has been so obsessed with him and sacrificed so much to defeat the NK, he would have deserved to get to kick his ass a bit in one on one combat. (And no, the dragon fighting doesn’t count because I couldn’t tell shit apart. I still don’t know which dragon got bitten and which did the biting, like … this is what you chose to spend so much CGI on, are you for real???)

I’m slightly disappointed that the NK only tried to shot a dragon with his badass spears one f*cking time!! It’s not because I dislike the dragons and want them gone (which I do), I just think it could have made good visuals and raised the stakes even further (I know the stake were pretty darn high to begin with but I just didn’t feel anything.)

Can the Night King speak or does he just choose not to cause “reasons”? Well, at least he can smirk like a boss … Seriously, he’s the most generic and boring villain ever. Glad he’s a goner though.

Also, what was the point of the White Walkers? Like, did they do anything but stand around at the tree line? I was really waiting for them to … I don’t know … try to shoot a dragon out of the sky or fuck things up in the castle.

I like that it was Arya who saved the day, I wasn’t expecting that and I feel there was a bit of foreshadowing for this but it was done so anti-climactic I couldn't properly enjoy it. I still wish they would have done some more foreshadowing for this but they probably wanted it to be a complete “twist” that absolutely no one saw coming. I think I actually would have preferred Bran to be the NK but alright …

Am I wrong or were there less than 10 sentences spoken in 82 minutes?

I am not going to lie; I really wanted Jon to slay Wightserion. I love this man with all my heart but they have been butchering his character and POV to protect their Pol!Jon plot twist and I get it and I believe in Jon but having him slay a Zombie!Dragon would have been a great metaphor for him getting his old self back and literally slaying his dragons, you know? The more I think about this, the more I’m pissed that they didn’t …

I’m so confused that they killed of both of the Mormonts. The only good thing I saw in having Lyanna killed was that at least that would mean that Jorah would live … which is probably exactly why they did it. BIG DISLIKE.

I was relieved to see D*ny cry about Jorah’s death, he loved her so much it’s killing me inside. (How do people see the way Jorah loved her so fiercely and then see Jon with her as a contrast and are like … Yeah Jon and D, man, that’s love … TF?) Anyways, Jorah did her wrong, he did her good but he certainly deserved to be cried over by D*ny. I hate losing Jorah, I loved that devoted fool but I’m also low-key relived that at least this way, Jorah doesn’t have to pick between the North and D*ny. Also good, I loved Jorah and D fighting side by side – one last ride, I guess, going down together ... that's my kind of tea but whatever.

Also interesting, Jorah stayed at her side till the very end, while Jon ditched her first chance he got.

On that note, I also want to say that one of the most interesting things that happened in this episode was that Sam x Jon scene. You know the one where he walks past Sam, although Sam could’ve obviously used some help. Of course, you could say, yeah he just wanted to go kill the NK (which he obviously did want to) but I do believe that Jon’s decision to keep moving has a lot more to do with Bran than the NK. When he ditched D*ny, he said he needs to get to Bran, not “I need to find the NK and kill him”. He was under a lot of stress but his mind immediately went to Bran his brother and not to the Night King his enemy. I do believe that means something. Obviously, the argument can be made that it means the same but I doubt it. The walking past Sam thing could have been easily omitted but they didn’t. Sam, Jon’s best friend and BROTHER of the Night’s Watch. To me, it means that the Starks still are the priority of his heart, siblings or not. Jon knows now that Bran isn’t really his brother, that he’s the 3ER and let’s be real, he hasn’t had a meaningful interaction with Bran in years. He doesn’t know him anymore. But he still chose Bran. He couldn’t spare those ten seconds to help his best friend because Bran needed him. He ditched his NW brother/best friend AND his aunt/lover for his cousin Bran. I don’t know about you guys but I really loved that. Because it means so much regarding him being part of the pack and shit.

I very happily noted that D&D really went out of their way to make sure that absolutely nothing of significance was accomplished by D*ny or her armies or her dragons. Drogon and Rhaegal didn’t even take down Viserion, Arya Stark did. Kinda.

What will Arya be called now by the smallfolk? Kingslayer? Dragonslayer? Nightslayer? Armyslayer? Sooo many possibilies ...

I'm in the serious need of a Jonsa scene. I've been patient but now I need Jon to gaze at Sansa from the side and being awkward around her and then I'll need him to reveal his parentage to her and Ayra.

Also, big F*ck You to all the “leakers” out there who made me worry all week about B*atbang!Baby and lines like D: “Ily but you need to keep the Targline alive. Do you understand?” J: “No, I get it, Auntie, but Ily and I only want you”. I mean that Exodus dude wrote a fucking essay based on nothing but lies – why do people even do that? Get a hobby, man!

Resume: I still have faith in Pol!Jon, Dark!D and Jonsa but I’m really confused about the route they’re currently taking. I’m assuming Dany will leave for Dragonstone in 8x04 and Jon will join her and we’ll have another Jonsa separation with only three episodes left, so that’d really suck. However, if I could wish for only a single thing next episode, then I want Jon back, I miss my man so much.

I realize this all must sound kinda anti but I’m just a bit upset and tired. I do love this show and I will keep watching till the bitter end, obviously. Also I respect all the work that went into creating this episode. It just wasn’t my kind of tea. Cheers xx

Peak District Rambling

We finally had our first two nights away from The Old Farmhouse last weekend and it was really lovely to get completely away. That’s probably the nicest thing about camping; you properly leave normal life behind! It wasn’t what we’d hoped for weather-wise on the August bank holiday weekend however, so when we arrived in our little hilly camp site near Buxton in the wind and rain, we just quickly put up our tents and ran to the safety of a nearby pub (they squeezed us in – their last customers for the evening) for a really really delicious pub dinner. My enormous steak pie was the envy of the group.

We ALMOST got stuck in the mud on the drive back to our tent, so its safe to say we didn’t stay up long, just a bit of nattering and drinking and then hid away in our sleeping bags (and on my deflating airbed). It was a very cold and windy night. At one point in the night I thought we might either take off or a cow was going to blow straight into the tent and the noises of the big trucks from the road seemed amplified by the wind – it could have been rockets flying past!

Saturday stayed dry most of the day with some sunshine (shock, horror!), so at least it meant we could get out for a long walk and enjoy the beautiful scenery. We walked about 3 hours to get to the absolutely gorgeous little village of Hartington, following, to begin with, a path which used to be a railway line. The way the first bit of it was cut into the hillside was really amazing. Some very cute donkeys and a friendly cat welcomed us to Hartington, we had a walk around the church and I got a postcard for Aunty M.

When Em Jay booked the pub lunch for that day she had spoken to an extremely enthusiastic man on the phone and we knew as soon as we arrived who he was. It was a tiny little bar, and, with distancing, the queues were often out the door, but he was alone behind the bar, over 6 ft tall, and with a personality to match. He was chatting to every person who came in, often including the whole room in the conversation and just so incredibly upbeat. I actually thought he would probably drive you mad if you worked with him. I didn’t want to leave Hartington, it was super cute, the sun was out, and I guess the thought of 3 hours walk back may have also had something to do with it…

The highlights on the walk back included taking a “short cut” behind a farm which Em Jay said felt like she was in an apocalypse game, finding a little tunnel in the hillside which you could just go into and was pitch dark – no idea where that lead! – and seeing the foundations of a 12th century castle. I was really getting tired by the time we reached the castle, and as I was expecting to see a big building on the horizon, I kept thinking we were never going to get there. Grumpy Naomi was certainly kicking in. But then suddenly we reached the top of a small hill and there was an incredible rock jutting out of it and we climbed up to look down from what used to be the wall of the castle and into the now grassy foundations. An impressive sight and a well needed sit down and banana break for a grumpy walker! It was still a fair way to go from there across vast fields to get back to camp, but I knew a camp fire and BBQ were at the other end, which helped!

Oh and just before we got home there we encountered some rather vocal cows... We think they must have been hungry, but I have never heard cows make such loud and unified noises in my life – it was so bizarre. Will post a video below!

The evening was really lovely, and started with a gorgeous sunset over the pretty little hillside we we’re situated on. We got ourselves a camp fire from the guys who run the site (we think it used to be the inside of a washing machine!) but it seemed like the logs had gotten wet, as for a large part of the evening the barrel just produced smoke and not much heat – we were getting proper camp fire envy from all those around us who seemed to have perfectly blazing fires! I set to drinking however and put on all the layers I had, and I was perfectly toasty all evening (unlike J&E!!) and very much enjoyed our little BBQ, chocolate and, later on, camp fire melted Camembert! A lot of silliness ensued, mainly around how Jordan’s car smelt like it had taken a sh*t (from the Camembert) and Em Jay commenting on how amazing the moon looked while we were all toasting our bottoms on the fire. The moon and stars looked glorious and we even saw the International Space Station fly across the sky. My only regret was not bringing marshmallows.

While waiting 45 minutes for scrambled eggs to cook on Jordan’s little tiny gas canister cooker in the morning, we packed everything up and basked in some much anticipated sunshine before heading to Bakewell for a little wander. Bakewell was busy but lovely, with it’s colourful gardens and very quaint craft markets – one lady told us about how knitting had got her through cancer treatment!! We grabbed a coffee and pastry and Alex and I perused a few art gallery shops, but nothing jumped out at us. We quickly realised that we were all really knackered, so decided to call it a day and head out for the lovely drive home.

It certainly wasn’t the holiday I was dreaming of this year, but in these crazy times we’ve got to take what we can get, and I’m very grateful that we had this little get away, and some time to appreciate the beauty on our doorstep with some wonderful company.

“Well, I live on the train,” I said in class.

“You live on the train?” Some dumb chick asked me.

“No. I mean--like, on the train line. Like, my house is by a train station.” I clarified.

“OHH-HH! I thought you meant you, like, lived on the train, and I was, like, whaaaat??” Like I said, some dumb chick.

Since coming to college my friends, who had mostly stayed local going to Northeastern, UMass Boston, and Boston University, and I would jest at the naivete other college freshmen coming into the “big” city for the first time. We would laugh at their ineptitude on the train: lamenting my one Emerson friend who had signed up to be a Wag walker, but would have to use all the money she made from a walk to pay the Ubers back and forth to Harvard Square and Southie, rather than paying the $2.30 to ride the Red Line four stops. Or the kids who had mace on their keychains as we rode home from Roxbury on the last train at 12:30. This is Boston in 2018, not the Bronx in 1972, you’re fine, kids. We would also laugh at the kids who would try to pass as Bostonians, the kids from Andover or Newburyport, deep in the North Shore, but didn’t know how to navigate from Chinatown to North Station (again, it’s four stops.).

I felt some ownership over this “turf.” These new people were in our city, though. I felt a need to prove that I was from here and had a sort of superiority because of it. I know how to use the train, been doing it forever. My mother works at this college. These people had come onto my turf. So, it was weird when they lamented to me that things I did were weird to them. Like, when in a class discussion I would say “wicked,” or the slight accent I had when giving a speech, saying things like, “terrahbul” instead of “terrible,” or even “Emmasun” instead of “Emerson.” Some things they did were weird: everyone here is so giddy and idealistic; they are overly politically correct and pseudo intellectual. Maybe it’s because I’m from a major city in the northeast known for being rude, or maybe I’m just an asshole, but all that was weird to me. Most people “learn about themselves” while in college, so far I’ve realized my personality is increasingly akin to some character that Casey Affleck would play: this was my city.

We live on the train. Oak Grove, in Melrose is the last stop on the Orange Line to the north. So granted, we are suburban scum, but arguably the most urban of the suburban scum. We live close. So, close in fact, that my mother had made the decision for me that I could commute rather than live in a dorm. She figured if she could get here to teach, I could get here to go to class. EVEN THOUGH Rachel goes to Harvard which is closer and lives there, and Maya goes to Tufts which is even closer to Melrose and she lives there! And $16,000 later it’s still a sore subject.

As a result of this I have had to spend an inordinate amount riding the train. Witnessing the morning commute on the Orange Line is literally watching a Hellscape play before your eyes. I flip someone off at least twice a week. I quickly learned the rules and invented my own: always sit on the end that way on at least one side of you there isn’t another person; put your bag on the floor between your legs, but always hold the handle; if there is an open three-some of seats sit in the middle seat, not next to someone; stand and don’t complain. I learned the demographic of the commute: the trashy-lookin’ white people get off at Bunker Hill in Charlestown; the Asian people get off at Malden, typically; young moms in the process of gentrifying Medford get off at Wellington; and the uppity white people get off at Oak Grove.

In commuting, I had a ridiculous amount of time in the day to fill between classes. So, in the beginning of the year I had also started working for Jumpstart, the Emerson-run organization that provides support to underprivileged preschools. I was sent to South Boston. And while I am a native of this city, I’m from Melrose, the boushy end of the train. I had never been to Southie. Southie is literally a straight line down from my stop. But, I was excited to see it for the first time. I knew it wouldn’t be Gone Baby Gone, Southie is being gentrified.

When you get off the train at Andrew Square station the view is a bit quintessential: bums, a rundown Dunkin Donuts, a travel agency that is, or at least was, a front for some gang thing, and a bar called The Connection whose logo was an Irish and Italian flags criss-crossing. The latter of which I found an odd connection to: my father’s side of the family are old Irish Bostonians hailing from Southie and a place in Cambridge that used to be called “Kerry Corner,” and my mother’s family right off the boat from Italy coming from Brooklyn then settling in Albany. My Auntie Shannon had described their wedding as, “the mob and mafia coming together.” So, I felt as though I belonged, if not geographically, than historically or culturally.

But as you walk down the street from the station to the preschool the efforts of gentrification became evident. There was the posh coffee house, a freshly built apartment complex, triple deckers with a fresh coat of paint. But of course this was alongside the projects and a beat up Catholic church.

“Where you going for Thanksgiving, Erin? You going to Auntie Colleen and Uncle Brian’s?” One of the teachers, Miss Caitlin, had asked one of the students, Erin, dripping in her thick accent. Miss Caitlin and Erin were related through some cousin, and after two months this had only solidified that these people were my brand of people. In Melrose, though a couple income brackets above Southie, everyone was some type of Irish, everyone was related somehow (my third grade teacher and I were in the same situation as Miss Caitlin and Erin), and, as the cliche goes, everyone was always inquiring about each other’s relatives and their whereabouts.

All of this together had a funny effect. I have always claimed to be from Boston when people asked, even though I am from Melrose. But it wasn’t until I was thrust into this environment that I felt I truly could admit to being from Boston.

In supplement to that, I felt as though my time at Emerson, as ridiculous as this is about to sound, had hardened me a bit as a city-slickin’ Bostonian. When my other friends had come home for Thanksgiving they noted that my accent had become a bit more apparent, especially when yelling.

This was oddly symbolic of how I had felt increasingly throughout the semester. I’ve always been from here, but the juxtaposition of being with a new set of outsiders with an espeically keen naivete had only heightened that feeling. When some girl in a political science class had tried to give a thorough explanation that she was from Boston when everyone in the class knew full well that she was from Newburyport, I, like, actually got kinda pissed off. She was not from here. That’s the North Shore, that’s not even Greater Boston. Along with all this I had started wearing my Red Sox hat more. To fill the gaping hole of not having high school cheer in my life, I had started watching the Patriots and becoming completely overzealous. I was becoming more and more city scum, with every blind homeless person I quickly scampered past leaving the train station, or time I petulantly and confidently J-walked. This is my city.

Some may try to argue this, Melrose is after all a whopping five miles away, but, screw it. Screw them.
